Ask Mike – 2015 NFL Draft Edition

Q – Do you think Dion Jordan is being held out of the workouts because he is part of a trade and we can’t risk him getting hurt? If so, who else out there is being held out of workouts? Kendricks of Philly? If so, will there be some 3-way swing trade with the Eagles, Browns, and us where Bradford goes to the Browns and Mariotta goes to Philly? If so, will it be us sending Dion Jordan to the Eagles and either Moore or Josh Freeman to the Browns and us getting the Browns’ other first pick and their 5th and Philly’s first and thirds?

I think it’s possible Dion Jordan is going to be traded, but I wouldn’t leave the focus solely on Philly and Chip Kelly. Sure, Kelly is always Duck hunting, but there are a lot of other teams that could be interested in Jordan, especially teams that play a 3-4 base defense, where Jordan’s talent might flourish the most. It seems to me that at 3-4 OLB, where he’s not going up against the OT with his hand in the ground right at the LOS would better suit him, and give him time to use his speed and length better coming around the edge. It seems like his functional strength doesn’t suit him fighting in the trenches.

Now, if Kelly really is the guy who wants Jordan, it’s possible Mychal Kendricks is a part of the equation. A 3 team deal seems so unlikely though in the NFL, but if it were to somehow materialize, Kendricks seems like a good fit on both sides. A young talented player, who may not be a perfect fit for their respective teams. Kendricks in his rookie season played all 3 LB spots, SLB, WLB and MLB. In ’13 and ’14, Kendricks settled in at MLB. He’s got the speed to cover, and in 3 seasons has 17 passes defensed and 3 INT’s, along with 5 FF’s and 4 FR’s. He’s made some plays. Jordan has made a few impact plays as well, but most of them have come on ST’s. Jordan has only 3 sacks in 2 seasons, and is a year older than Mychal Kendricks. It would definitely be a trade for potential for the Eagles, and then love of Ducks, than what Jordan has produced.

I don’t think Freeman or Moore will be a part of any deal, if the Browns wanted either of those guys, they would have had them. I think the Brown are either going to give Manziel another shot this season, or they’re going to draft another QB, maybe Hundley or Petty.

I think another possibility is if Chip Kelly really wants Jordan, and Miami is really ready to cut the cord on Jordan is maybe we trade him for the Eagles 3rd RD pick (#84), or even their 4th RD pick (#114). At this point, either pick seems high for what Jordan has produced, but if we’re talking Chip Kelly and a former Duck (especially a coveted one), it may not matter.

OK – Obviously this question became immaterial with yesterdays unfortunate news that Dion Jordan will be suspended for the entire ’15 season, and apparently, we had a deal in hand with Philadelphia which would have included G Evan Mathis and/or a late pick, and possibly LB Mychal Kendricks.  That’s history now, thanks Mr. Jordan!

Q – Mike,

Do you view CB as a need?  Do you think there is a CB worth picking at 14? Do you think there is a day 3 pick  with a shot to compete with Jamar Taylor?

Oinks,

Pigsgerald

I do view CB as a need, but not a dire need. I think we can wait until the 4th or 5th RD. I think there are some CB’s that are potential starters that might make it to the 4th. We’ve recently loaded up on CB’s signing Nickel CB Brice McCain (PIT), and CB Zack Bowman (NYG), and of course we already have Brent Grimes, Jamar Taylor and Will Davis, although the latter 2 definitely have durability issues, as well as question marks as to whether either truly is a starter.

The draft is a crap shoot, so the guys that appear right now through mocks and ratings and what not that they are projected to be available in the 3rd or 4th RD might be long gone once the actual draft is underway. CB’s like Josh Shaw, Charles Gaines, Doran Grant, Senquez Golson, Lorenzo Doss, Steven Nelson. I think all of these guys are at about the talent level of the 2 young CB’s we drafted 2 years ago, but maybe don’t have the injury issues.

As to whether there is a CB worth picking at #14, Trae Waynes is probably the one guy that can be considered worth it, but I can’t lie, I would be disappointed, very disappointed if that were our pick. Oh, back to guys that may be available in the 4th, I think it’s possible Ifoooooo (Ifo Ekpre-Olomu) might make it there. Only because of his injury and the likelihood that he may not be ready to start the season due to his injury, and also the possibility that some teams may only see him as a nickel corner due to his size.

Q – Hey Mike, we’ve discussed the draft possibilities up and down and side to side, I think we even looked at it from 45 degree angles.

So there’s not much else to touch on leading up to the draft this Thursday night. So I’ll ask this question and I know which prospect you like best, but tell us why you think one over the other is the way to go.

I feel that both Parker and La’el Collins will be there at #14 when we’re up. Obviously barring any trades, who do you take and why or is there someone else you’d prefer who you also think will be there?

Thank you,
The Dark Knight 😉

I would take La’el Collins in a second. Here’s why. I really don’t believe that Branden Albert is going to be ready and completely healthy to start the season. Of course we all want him to be, but I’m not sure that he will be. That would leave a giant hole on our O-line, even if it were just 2-4 games. We all saw what happened the last games of the season when Branden Albert was out. Besides lighting up the Vikings, we were inept, and we couldn’t run block, or properly protect Ryan Tannehill. Yeah, we brought in a few bodies recently, but does anyone here really think that any of those guys, or anyone else we have on the roster is ready to play LT? I think Ja’Wuan James would be the best candidate to do that, but then we have a hole at RT, and please don’t say Jason Fox. If you tell me Jason Fox is fine at RT, or LT, I’ll tell you Matt Hazel is the stud WR we need to play opposite Kenny Stills.

When I look at what WR’s should be available in the 2nd RD, I’d be very happy with any of those guys, meaning Sammie Coates, Nelson Agholor, Phillip Dorsett, maybe Jaelen Strong (although I think he goes late 1st) Devin Smith etc. If we got La’el Collins and any one of those WR’s I mentioned, I’d be ecstatic. Not that we’re the GB Packers, but if you think of the WR corps that they assembled over the years, they never really had the big stud WR until they drafted Jordy Nelson. Greg Jennings (5’10” 195), Donald Driver (6’0” 188), James Jones (6’1” 208).

Look at what we currently have on our roster at WR now.
Kenny Stills 6’0” 194, Jarvis Landry 5’10” 195, Jarvis Landry 5’11” 202, Rishard Matthews 6’0” 215, Matt Hazel 6’1” 202. Seems pretty similar, right? There are some bigger WR’s that will be available to us in the mid to late RD’s like Chis Conley 6’2” 213.

I realize I’ve left out DGB (Sorry GDP!), but I just don’t see us going that way. It would shock me if we selected him, because we’ll either have to take to him in RD1 or 2, and I don’t think he’ll be there in RD2 pick 15, so basically, we’ll either have to take him at #14 or trade back and take him, and I really don’t see our 1st pick going on a big gamble like that, even with Tannenbaum involved.

Back to La’el Collins. He’s a nasty, blocking machine. he has the talent to play OT, but can move inside and be a dominant OG. Could we use a dominant OG? Hell yeah we can! Does anyone here want to roll the dice with Albert out and Jason Fox at RT and Dallas Thomas and Billy Turner at G? I hope that’s not the plan, it scares me to death! Collins brings the “nasty” let’s kick some ass attitude our O-line desperately needs. How many failed short yardage situations have we had? It’s attitude! If you line up knowing you’re getting that yard or two, anticipating putting the guy you’re up against on his ass, it happens!

Draft La’el Collins, and the machine works!

Addendum to the news yesterday about La’el Collins.  The Dolphins organization will do their due diligence on this.  They will find out the facts, as will every other NFL team interested in drafting La’el Collins, and he will still be our #14 pick if everything checks out.  Watch and see!

Well it’s good to see you finally get off your Arse!

The big question on everyone’s mind #14!!!!!!!!

So if La’el Collins, Strong, Gurley, Landon Collins are there @ 14 who does Mike E take?

And seeing as you picked La’el if he is gone then does Kendrick’s come into play?

As a backup in case you get to many Draft questions!

Do you think Dallas Thomas can man an OG spot?

Am I that transparent??? Yup, I most certainly am. There are quite a few people who want us to draft La’el, I don’t stand alone. I don’t see us drafting Kendricks if Collins and Parker are gone. I think we’d work the phones and try to move back some, and in that case, Kendricks becomes a possibility, as does Jaelen Strong, Breshad Perriman, or one of the other OT’s like DJ Humphreys, Cameron Erving or Jake Fisher.

I admit that I’m kind of narrow-minded on this topic, but I think we have to get the O-line right. I think WR’s are easier to replace than OL. If Albert or James go down, we’re in trouble. If Kenny Stills goes down, the season is not lost. Right now we don’t have the depth, and I’m not sure at all that we have 2 starting quality OG’s at the moment.

Strong and Gurley will likely get consideration, and maybe more from a couple of guys in the war room, and the selection of Gurley would have to go along with a completely different philosophy on offense. We’ve been a pass oriented team the last few years. If we take Gurley, that has to change. You don’t take Todd Gurley at #15 and run him 15-20 a game. We’ve done that successfully with Lamar Miller, a 5.1 YPC average, so why draft Gurley? If the plan is to run the ball 30-35 times a game, with Gurley getting the majority, and Miller as a change of pace, then it makes sense, and maybe that’s how we roll. I just think of the GB Packers offense when Phibin was there, and they never had anything like that, which leads me to believe it won’t happen here either. I know some of you love Gurley, and I understand why, I just don’t see him as a Miami Dolphin.

Drafting Kendricks really depends on what they think of the guys we currently have. You have to think Jenkins and Misi are locks, with Misi staying at MLB or moving to SLB, and Jenkins at WLB. Kendricks is a guy who could play either inside or outside, as can Paul Dawson or Bernardrick McKinney. What about the guys we have though? Is Jordan Tripp ready to compete for a starting job at either MLB or OLB? Kelvin Sheppard? Or is it Chris McCain that will win the OLB spot across from Jenkins? That’s what we DON’T know, how much they think of what we already have. That’s the Wild Card that may have us completely ignoring LB in this draft, or at least with with our first 2 picks.

As far as Dallas Thomas, unless some switch goes off with that kid, I don’t see him as anything but a versatile guy who can back up at G or T, but I really don’t see him as a starter, or at least a successful starter.

Q – We’ve seen Philbin for a while now……do you see any possibility that we come out of this draft with a player with a serious character or motivation concern if we pick at #14 or above?

stanger

I personally just don’t see it happening. I think if Joe has any input on who we draft (And he SHOULD), then I don’t see a guy like CB Marcus Peters or WR Dorial Green-Beckham in a Dolphins uniform. We’ve seen him weed the roster of those type of players since he got here (Brandon Marshall, Vontae Davis, Mike Wallace), so I can’t imagine, unless they brought that player in for an interview, and Joe felt comfortable with him.

Joe obviously has an image of the type of player that he wants here, he wants TEAM players, guys that put the needs of the team first and foremost, and their own needs are secondary. That being said, we haven’t gotten past .500 with Joe at the helm yet, so despite weeding out the bad character guys, we’re still an average team. One could argue that a very talented player with character issues might be worth a shot, and maybe their 100% right, but I don’t think Joe Philbin is one of the guys who thinks that way.

This is an addendum to this response.  After what transpired on Tuesday with Dion Jordan, there’s not a shot in hell we take a player with character issues.  We just can’t afford to have another high pick that can be suspended and unavailable to the team.

Q – Alright, I gotta question for ya:
We know who the favorites are for us @ 14, and who we are likely to go after, but do you have a dark horse candidate for the pick, assuming we stay? Is there someone under the radar the FO might be looking at or who perhaps we have overlooked who could come in and be an immediate asset?

At this point, I don’t think any player is under the radar. We’ve discussed and posted thousands of mock drafts the least few months, so I can’t say there’s a player we haven’t touched on. Now, there could be a player that we’ve discussed maybe as a 2nd RD pick or a guy we would take if we were able to trade back, so if that’s what you mean, than yes, there is always the possibility of a surprise pick.

The first player that is a “dark horse” could be Breshad Perriman. It would be a surprise, but I wouldn’t be shocked or dumbfounded. Another player would be Cameron Erving. Very agile offensive lineman who can play T, C or G. With that talent, and versatility on the line, it’s not out of the realm of possibility. You can probably put Eric Kendricks in that category as well. He’s a very productive, talented LB who can play either inside or outside, so he’s a potential dark horse as well.

I think WR Jaelen Strong is another dark horse. Most of us see him as a late 1st RD, early 2nd RD pick, but he’s a fats, big bodied receiver who uses his size well. As I discussed before, I’m not totally convinced that we’re even looking for a big WR, but if we are, he’s one of them. A true dark horse would be DGB Dorial Green-Beckham. Most of think that due to character concerns, he’s not even or board in the 1st RD, but it’s possible that the Dolphins brass (read Tannenbaum) feel differently, and want the big (6’5” 237) talented, but red flagged WR. I would be floored by that one, but hey, anything is possible.

I’d also include 3 more OL in this, DJ Humphries and Jake Fisher. Both grade more towards late 1st or early 2nd RD picks, but both are talented in different ways. Humphries is considered by some the best true LT prospect in this draft, so at #14, with Albert injured, it’s not insane. Jake Fisher is a very athletic OL who is a former TE, and really moves well, and can play at T or G.  The other one is T/C Cameron Erving.  Another athletic OL, he’s played C and T.  He can likely play any position on the line.  I think that versatility is important, because if any of these OT’s need to move inside if they cover a T position temporarily until Albert is healthy, you want a guy who will be comfortable moving inside.

The other dark horse possibility is that we move up and take either WR Amari Cooper, WR Kevin White, or even OL Brandon Scherff. The first 2 wouldn’t really surprise me, but if we traded up for Scherff, that would knock my socks off. I’m not even sure I would agree with that one so much, but like I did with Ireland and Dion Jordan, I’d hope we made the right move.

If you’re a Dolphins fan, you’ve already heard the disturbing news that Dion Jordan was suspended for the entire 2015 NFL season for failing yet another drug test, and this time, there were diluting agents found, which means he was trying to beat the system. Well, the only ones who are beat are fans of this team, because as the story goes, we had a deal in hand with the Philadelphia Eagles for G Evan Mathis, and a pick in this draft, likely a late pick/and or possibly LB Mychal Kendricks. Kiss it goodbye thanks to Jordan.

Additional disturbing news came down the freeway, OT La’el Collins will be questioned by police in an investigation of the death of Collins ex-girlfriend. Some people are overreacting to this, or maybe I’m so blindly enamored with drafting him that nothing is going to cloud that for me.

In any case, mark it down, with the 14th pick in the 2015 NFL Draft, the Miami Dolphins select . . .

This draft seems pretty good through 3 rounds and then like most drafts it kind of thins out but there are still always prospects available who will pan out. Finding a small school guy like Fede in the 7th is a good example. He was as about as impactful as Dion Jordan as a rookie so you never know.

  2. drg says:

    Tim,

Agreed on the draft. I don’t really follow it much for time reasons and because only a couple of guys will end up on the Dolphins. I get it though. It’s fun to project and run through all the possibilities and it does make it more fun to follow the guys you’ve researched when watching on Sunday.

I pretty much will root for the guys being talked about on this board. If Gurley is a special talent, he would probably be my preference. I never realized what an elite RB can do for a team until we got Ricky Williams. If Gurley is anything close to that level of player then he would push our offense to new heights. Collins makes sense, although it is painful to think of how much we have invested in the OL over the years with lackluster returns. I’m not a huge fan of taking WRs early. Would prefer we pick up a guy of value in the 2nd or later. Having watched Strong, I would love us to get him somehow.

  4. naplesfan2010 says:

I’m not up for a draft with all small school guys but the top 2 again. I mean it worked OK last year, but we need those 5th rounders this year and especially the round 4 guy to play quality minutes right out the box this year. Some guy like Waller for example who might not be a starter for 3-4 years but WILL be a situational (Red Zone) guy right away.
Or Blake Bell who has potential to learn the position and be great in 3-4 yrs but can be in on a 3TE “tackle eligible” cheatriot type gadget play right away.

  5. Al in MIA says:

The only thing countering a Gurley pick in RD 1 is the perception that this is the deepest RB class in not just years but perhaps a decade or so.

  6. naplesfan2010 says:

My response to Dion Jordan’s aplogy?
    FUCK YOU!

  7. drg says:

FWIW, my opinion on the Utah players since Miami’s scout really loves the program:

Orchard – I would be cool with us taking him in the 2nd. Athletic, excellent work ethic and character. Should be a 10 sack/season guy as a 4-3 DE. Size against run might be an issue. If he falls to third would be a real bargain.

Rowe – Great kid. Very athletic and versatile. Doesn’t have great instincts as FS, but will rack up 100+ tackles and does a nice job in coverage. Wouldn’t complain if we took him 2nd round, but honestly I felt like he might be going too high based on what I saw in college.

Poutasi – Take him in 4th or 5th and he will start at G for us for the next 8 years. Nothing special, but he would be solid.

Kaelin Clay – If I could get one Utah guy on the Dolphins this year, this is the guy. Best returner I’ve seen here since Steve Smith and that’s saying something since we’ve had some good returners (Shaky, Dunn, etc.). I also think he could develop into a very good slot WR. I really, really fear NE picking him up late or as an UFA.

Dres Anderson – I’d only take him as UFA or 7th round. Talented at getting open deep and high pointing ball, but drops too many and not a great possession guy.

  8. Tim Knight says:

It’s interesting looking at our draft board in the video with John Congemi with Dennis Hickey you see what I think is our horizontal board with every team in the league at the top. My guess is this electronic board allows us to track who’s been drafted and where and still see our value board simultaneously. Really cool what technology brings to the draft. No more magnets, pencils and erasers. LOL

  9. Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
Quite a contrast to Ireland’s draft board :/.

  10. naplesfan2010 says:

I would love to get CB Rowe out of Utah in the second, but he’ll be gone before we pick.
I think we can get Charles Gaines in the midrounds, and he would be a nice guy to spot play now and develop to take over for Grimes down the road.

  11. Tim Knight says:

drg, we didn’t make the playoffs with Ricky until 2008 when he shared the workload with Ronnie. We traded for him in 2002. The current NFL is not RB driven. Yeah Marshawn Lynch is an impact RB but their team feeds off defense. I’m still not sold a top RB is the way to go.

  12. naplesfan2010 says:

I would look at UDFA Quayshawn Neeley, ILB, GaTech 6’ 236 who had 8 INT and scored 4 def TDs.

  13. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Sorry, ran out to do some errands and wash my car. Yes, we’ve been there done that, so no need to get angry if the pick isn’t a guy we expected. Last year, I was all over the Ja’Wuan James pick. I predicted it, and stood by it, and for once, i was actually right. That was the only time I ever got one right. I hoped we drafted Tanny, but I didn’t think it was going to happen.

    • Tim Knight says:

I know you were on the Ja’Wuan James pick. I was touting Morgan Moses and James was the right guy. I’ve gotten a few right over the years but more wrong and then the trade up or down surprises.

      • Mike E. says:

That was actually the only one that I can remember that I got right, at least 1st RD. I think I’ve gotten the right guy in other rounds, but that was the only 1st RD pick I got right.

  14. Mike E. says:

If we do draft Gurley, as I’ve said before, we’re not rushing 15-20 times a game, but more like 25-30, with him getting 70-80% of them, or there was no reason to draft him.

  15. drg says:

    Tim,

There were plenty of reasons we didn’t make the playoffs those years, but when Ricky was motivated he wasn’t one of them. The year he ran for over 2000 and we crapped the bed in the last two games to miss the playoffs I still believe we were a top 3 SB contender.

Remember the noticeable difference in our running game when Moreno played? And I don’t even think he was anything that special. If Gurley is the best RB prospect to come out of college since AP like some guys are saying he would be worth the investment. A special talent at RB would make this offense really dangerous. Backs get really good looks if they know how to find the gaps in the ZBS and a guy that can make the second level tacklers miss could get our offense over that 25 ppg plateau that seems to be a marker for playoff level offenses.

I have no clue if Gurley is that good. If not, then let’s get a back in the 4th or 5th round since there are a ton of good ones out there this year.

    • Mike E. says:

drg – True that Moreno gave us some pop, but that was just one game. I think if opposing defenses started game planning for the heavy dose of running, it wouldn’t be as successful. I could be wrong, but that’s how I see it.

  16. drg says:

    Mike,

How many rushing attempts did we average last season? I would think it was around 20-25. Our offense is much better when we rush a lot on first and second down. Tannehill is a nice threat in the read option. He also did a good job avoiding big hits last year and is really durable.

    • Mike E. says:

I’d say we averaged that most games, but sometimes inexplicably, we shelved the run game too fast. It was eerily similar to Sherman’s offense in that regard. I don’t think Miller ever had 20 carries or more.

      • Mike E. says:

Just checked. Miller once, in ’13 had 22 carries, but never again. There were games he averaged over 6 YPC, and still didn’t even get 16 carries. Why?

      • dbolt48 says:

        Mike,
The answer is simple, his success was based off the read option. You can’t keep using your QB as a decoy and allow him to take cheap hits. This is why a lot of pundits think Gurley is a viable option for Miami.

  17. Al in MIA says:

Article at ESPN today on DGB background to the NFL.

    http://espn.go.com/nfl/story/_/id/12782255/can-dorial-green-beckham-trusted

I guess the one good thing about his character is his commitment to football (he practiced all year on the scout team despite being told he wouldn’t play at all that season).

  18. Tim Knight says:

drg, Ricky did have like 1,850 and was great but not over 2,000 and we still lacked top level QB play. So maybe a special RB with Tannehill will be the difference, I’m just not sold on it. I’m also not sold that a rookie WR will get many reps with Landry, Stills. Jennings and even Matthews. I know that doesn’t scream dominant but when you add the TEs and RBs and everything we do, it might be a good offense as is. We’ll see.

  19. The Flying Pig says:

It would be really cool if we drafted DGB, Marcus Peters, La’el Collins, Randy Gregory, Shane Ray and then gave Dion Jordan one more chance

We should also hire Robert Downey Jr as coach

  20. Al in MIA says:

    Mike E,
Regarding Gurley, I still believe that in the modern era you can’t push a back over 300 carries in a season (300/16 = 18.75). They break down and many have worse seasons following 300+ carry season. 18 a game is a good number to go by (288 carries a season).
I expect more touches with Gurley out there but instead of pure running plays, more on the receiving side.

  21. The Flying Pig says:

The D in Dolphins stands for ‘second chances”

Let’s trade up for Winston too

  22. The Flying Pig says:

Honestly I look at the players I listed above with baggage
and I look at the the elite players

and I think as a whole this draft sucks

I have 3 impact players with no baggae
    Kevin White
    Amari Cooper
    Trae Waynes

I would include Gurley if he wasn’t coming of an injury but even you Gurleyfanatics no coming off an injury is risky

This draft is so bad, if Cadillac Williams was available I would probably take him

  23. drg says:

    Tim,

Yeah, my bad on the record season. I really like Lazor’s offense. I think the schemes are really solid and allow an offense to move the chains without elite skill guys. Where we struggled was in red zone and big plays. That’s where one or two elite guys should make a difference. Not sure Parker is that guy. Seems like a great fit for our offense, but not a true RZ threat. Hoping Cameron fills that void for us this year?

From what I’ve read on Gurley he has big play ability, is a great passing threat out of the backfield, and can get first downs in short yardage situations. I definitely want to see us use the read option, pistol, and other spread run concepts in heavy use this year. It plays to Tannehill’s strengths and we are much more dangerous and unpredictable. Would like to see more play action out of it and test the middle of the field with seam routes. Screens are finally an effective weapon for us. Miller is a nice player, but if we could complement him with an elite RB that would make us dangerous.

It really shouldn’t be that difficult to find a good guard later in the draft. I know we’ve been trying forever, but come on…. Mike has a good point about Collins holding down the LT spot until Brandon is healthy. Makes sense and I’ll sign on if that’s the route we choose to go. Would love a trade down this year.

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s funny, we struggled in the red zone because we got there a lot. But that’s also how we scored 90% of our TDs. We didn’t score from outside the red zone very much. Miller with his 97 yard TD run in the last game was the longest score. I’d say maybe we had 3-4 outside the red zone but not sure.

      • drg says:

I think the RB position gives us the best chance to bust some long TDs in this offense and considering the WR personnel. A good power RB and creative run schemes in the red zone should be able to improve our %.

  24. drg says:

    Mike,

I meant total team carries. Seems like the days of one guy carrying the ball 20-25/game are all but done. If you have an elite talent then you probably go that direction.

I know you were on the Ja’Wuan James pick. I was touting Morgan Moses and James was the right guy. I’ve gotten a few right over the years but more wrong and then the trade up or down surprises.

Mike and i told you but nooooooo you wouldnt listen…… We were right about Gabe Jackson too….in case you were wondering….

This draft is so bad, if Cadillac Williams was available I would probably take him
    ———————————–
What baggage does Dante Fowler have….

    • D says:

Also if your including Waynes in that, you should include Scherff, Peat, Dupree, Beasley, and probably Kevin Johnson as well. Id personally take Waynes out and just put Fowler in there and then yes thats pretty much the fact of the matter. Hell id go as far as to say Cooper and Fowler are really rare players with little to no baggage or concerns. Easy selections.

  27. Mike E. says:

    LOL @ D

  28. naplesfan2010 says:

Ameer Abdullah seems like a 110% class act. I would love him as the next Darren Sproles.

  29. drg says:

    Piggy,

That’s why I like trading down. Get as many 2,3,4 round selections as we can and fill some needs. Some of those guys will be special, some busts, but at least we increase our odds of finding them. If the FO is sold on a guy being an elite talent then let’s get him in the first. Maybe it’s even worth trading up for White or Cooper?

  30. Mike E. says:

    Al

I’m not saying that every single game he has to get 25-30 carries, but there are games when you’re up and want to grind out the last few minutes, or you need a spark, or whatever it is, I see no need for an artificial cutoff. It’s unnecessary.

    D-Bolt

I don’t believe for a second that the only reason Miller had success was because of the read option. That’s not fair at all.

    • Tim Knight says:

I agree. When the ZBS is working Miller really excels and explodes through the hole for chunk yardage. He plays quick and fast and doesn’t dance around. He’s a quick one cut runner and go and then he can make a move or two more at a high gear. However, he does not possess all out take it to the house speed. He even almost got caught on his 97 yard TD run. He’s like 4.5 gear. LOL

  31. D says:

Ok im about to say it, cant believe it but its about to happen…
Melvin Gordon over Gurley if at 14 Parker is gone………..

    • dbolt48 says:

I personally like Gordon a lot. Called him better than Gurley at the beginning of last year. With that said I think Gurley offers more inside capability while Gordon is much better coming out of his cuts for big plays.

  32. Mike E. says:

    drg

I agree with that, and that’s exactly what Gurley is advertised to be. If he wasn’t, why take a RB at #14?

  33. Mike E. says:

    Naples

I like Abdullah as well, but he might just be a change of pace guy, not sure he’s an every down back, although he’s very talented. Not that much different than Miller actually.

  34. stangerx says:

”I apologize to my teammates and the Dolphins organization…..I will stay in excellent physical shape and look forward to returning to the NFL as soon as possible. I’m deeply grateful to my family and friends for their continued support.”

From Dion Jordan’s press release. No……he didn’t offer to buy back Mike E’s jersey.

    • D says:

      Canned response…..filth be gone.

      • stangerx says:

He didn’t even write it. For that matter he talked about how his “diluted test” was to blame and was trying to sorta blame the heightened scrutiny cause of being a two-time offender. It was like, “a guy with a record just can’t a break in this world.”

  35. naplesfan2010 says:

I don’t exactly understand the “diluted test” thing, I mean I understand what the words mean, but what was diluted? What was it diluted with? and who diluted it and when? Is there not some little old lady watching these guys pee? Do they just mail in a coke bottle full of piss? did Jordan think he could pour some Perrier in his pee and that would make the heroin less of a percent?
    *+*+
Somebody please explain this to me.

    • Tim Knight says:

He tried to mask what he was taking.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

        so he’s stupid.

      • steveccnv says:

Stupid yes, but he just got caught, maybe he’s naïve or maybe he has a serious problem (I believe the latter). The guy that owned the house I lived in, in Tahoe had 2 DUIs, so he stopped drinking in the US 100%, but as soon as he got out of the country he’d get shit faced. One time they said as soon as he flew over the Mexican boarder he popped open a beer. That’s what Jordan needs to do, go cold Turkey.

  36. Tim Knight says:

Without bias or personal preference, who do you think we take at #14 or do we trade or up or down and for whom?

  37. herdfan says:

F*ck Dion Jordan. I hope he screws up again and gets banned for life because I don’t want him coming back to play well for another team and I sure as hell don’t want him in Miami. I hope another team never touches him when he is allowed back. I hope he never plays another down of football. I hope he spends the remainder of his life in a menial, low paying job that gives him ample time to reflect on how stupid he is. That pretty much wraps it up for me.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

      well said

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think he’ll play another down for us. Yes he is stupid. Or he’s just not into being a pro football player. Thanks, Dion.

Focus on Chris McCain who may become what we envisioned for Jordan and he was a UDFA at low cap.

    • steveccnv says:

He’ll be fine when he comes back in the future 2018,2019, 2020 or when ever it is, you gotta have faith. Why wouldn’t you want him to come back and be what we thought he could be when he was drafted? so he smoked a couple of doobies big deal, the NFL wants to take guys from the hood and turn them into choir boys, get serious.

  38. The Flying Pig says:

    D

I don’t think fowler has any baggage

But none of the edge rushers are elite IMO
But they may be good football players

    I forgot to include Williams

    I should have said him
    I like Danny Shelton too

I like Waynes more than most

But I don’t think his draft is as strong as most drafts

  39. getterdone says:

    Here here…lol

ESPN NFL Insider Jon Gruden says of Iowa OL Brandon Scherff: “He is probably going to be your best left tackle … your best guard … your best right tackle.”
“What is Scherff going to be? Who cares!” Gruden said. Here, here. The analyst’s take on Scherff mirrors Rotoworld’s. “Scherff has great awareness, he will compete, and if you are a nickel blitzer coming off the corner, if he sees you, it might be over,” Gruden said. “We saw that in the Pitt game. He inflicts pain when he delivers a block. He uses his hands well, keeps his head out of it. Do I wish that he had longer arms? Yes. Do I wish he had the prototype measurables? Yes. But I still want Scherff on my team.”

  40. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, this draft is not loaded with special prospects. It’s more deep with solid and upside than great.

    • getterdone says:

I disagree…I’ve really come around on Gurley. He’s special. I think he’s worth a chance to make this team great. It still helps Tanny a lot too.

      • Tim Knight says:

I can’t call a RB off of season ending knee surgery special. We’ll see.

      • steveccnv says:

Broaden your horizons Tim, look past opening day.

      • stangerx says:

steve — we might take Gurley, but the reason to do so is talent. Miller looked darn good last year and Philbin needs at least 9-7.

      • steveccnv says:

We need Gurley for the 2nd half anyways, when the rest of the team is starting to wilt as usual he’ll take over.

  41. stangerx says:

Just like that unheard tree falling in the forest, if a baseball game isn’t watched……did it actually happen?
    http://www.trbimg.com/img-554122a5/turbine/ct-gameday-white-sox-orioles–spt-0430-20150429

  42. Tim Knight says:

Steve, what if Gurley is never the same – lost his quick twitch power? I’m just not high on drafting a prospect off of surgery at the top.

    • steveccnv says:

If you want a top talent like that at #14 the only way to get him is, if he has some issue. You have to take a calculated risk, they had him in, they have a pretty good idea, if he’s going to come back strong or not. This isn’t the 70’s medical staff performing the surgery.

  43. getterdone says:

Tim, that’s why I said I finally just came around on him. I was letting everyone else tout him for awhile.
I read up on and waited for medical rechecks.
He had a clean tear, not meniscus damage, very crucial to healing and future performance.
He has a bout a 2% chance of retear, and his rehab is on pace way ahead of its time like AP did, who then ran almost 2000 yards,.

Swing for the fences on Gurley, Perriman, or DGB baby!

Gurely seems the safest of those three big talents!

    • Tim Knight says:

We’ll see. DGB and Perriman are not high on my list but I’ve been wrong before.

Landry, Stills, Jennings, Cameron are probably the focus of the offense right now with Miller and Williams also in the mix.

Our FO seems to be more focused on trench play – Mitchell, Suh, Albert, James and Turner. That said it doesn’t mean we don’t go skill at #14 but the way the season ended last year was on the trenches.

  44. Mike E. says:

Stanger – That’s a damn shame that game in Baltimore.

  45. Mike E. says:

    LMAO!!! Who knew?
Poleen Ca ‏@PoleenCA 2m2 minutes ago

    A pig’s orgasm lasts for 30 minutes.

  46. The Flying Pig says:

Only 23 hours until the draft

Which is more than enough time for another top prospect to get arrested

  47. getterdone says:

Tim, we have already been addressing the trenches. We’ll still see an OLman drafted, but maybe not the 1st this time.
I still think Miami knows that Mathis will be released, and have told him he’s got a spot here that he agreed upon. We’ll see.

    • getterdone says:

Tim, besides, I thought you was wanting special? You’ve mentioned it a bunch.
Do you think the only special players are ones we’ll have to trade up for?

BTW, Gurley could easily now go Top 10….IMO. That would suck.

      • Ken says:

If Gurley goes top 10 that means some other really good talent slides 1 position closer to us.

  48. Tim Knight says:

Rioting is an act of evil and defiance, it should not be viewed as a grass roots movement against injustice. It’s an excuse in bad behavior for injustice. It will not improve anything. How does looting and setting fires improve social justice? Ugh!!! SMH

  49. Ken says:

Nice job Mike E. Question is a little dated though. LOL.

  50. Ken says:

At Camden Yard tonight the sound of hand clapping.

  51. Ken says:

Guys I took a shower today. Where did everyone go?

  52. Ken says:

We are exercising our option for Tannehill’s 5th year. Will cost $16.1 million next year.

  53. Ken says:

Only Wyoming wanted to talk to me. Oh well. I need to get some sleep going to be a late couple of nights coming up. I was kind of bummed today when I found out tomorrow I have to go to a client meeting on a big case up state tomorrow at 4 p.m. But worst case scenario I am home before 8 so I shouldn’t miss a thing. I am out. Peace to you all.

  54. son of a son of a shula says:

Maycock has us taking Kevin Johnson at 14. Shoot me now, I won’t even watch the rest of the draft if he’s our pick. Total buzz kill.

We go and get a guy who stomps on people’s faces then pick a tiny finesse corner to start our draft – Yuck.

Stej and Buff don’t have QB’s and the QB in the division who is good doesn’t usually have top end receivers but wh’re gonna go and get the “safest” corner in the draft. I call BS. Don’t let this happen Hickey.

  55. The Flying Pig says:

Dolphins exercise 5th option on Tanny!

    woohoo!

    • Mike E. says:

I wanted them to sign him to a long term contract. This is what I was afraid of, that $16M salary. Between him and Suh next season, $44M.

      • son of a son of a shula says:

It’s just insurance and place holder for the big deal. That 16 mill is less than the franchise tag is so at least they have time to get the deal done.

  56. son of a son of a shula says:

With a playoff run Tannehill can parlay that fifth year option into a $120 mill deal. Lauren would surely be excited. I wonder how many more AK’s she’d buy.

  57. Mike E. says:

Heading off to sleep! Tomorrow is Draft Day, I need to save my energy! Goodnight!

    • The Flying Pig says:

You think you need to save your energy before the draft

Whichever prospect or two gets arrested tonight needs to save their energy to to spend the entire day tomorrow pleading for a 2nd chance

    • olddolphan says:

GOOD NIGHT, Mike E.!! – – Figures to be a VERY interesting night tomorrow in Chicago! —At least there WON’T be hundreds of obnoxious Jet fans making absolute jackasses of themselves on TV!! – – I want to thank you and Piggy for keeping us so well informed on the upcoming draft. You’re BOTH so much better than that admitted bacon eater Mel (as in “HELL”) Kiper!!

  58. olddolphan says:

WHAT A GREAT NIGHT to watch sports on TV!! – -First, the Lightning eliminated the Detroit Red Wings with a 2-0 win in game 7 here in Tampa!! –Earlier, the Rays beat the Yanks 4-3 in 13 innings. –THEN the Marlins won the 3-game series vs. the Mets as Ichiro Suzuki hit a 3-run bomb to supplement Stanton’s 2-run blast off of Sumo wrestler Bartolo Colon!!
    ———-
ICHIRO – – – all I have to say is WOW!! – – 1278 hits in the Japanese Major League and 2859 hits in the American Major Leagues!! – – He’s the ONLY PERSON EVER to get over 200 hits in 10 consecutive seasons of U.S. Major League baseball!! – – In 2004, he eclipsed George Sisler’s record of 257 hits in a season with 262 hits – – a record I doubt will EVER BE BROKEN!! – – Amazingly there are still a few who DON’T BELIEVE Ichiro belongs in the Hall of Fame!! – -But I predict THIS SEASON he will win over nearly all his doubters!! – – With starter Christian Yelich of Miami down with a back injury, it’s possible Ichiro could start over half of the Marlins 162 games this season in left field. If he does, he figures to be in the neighborhood of 2950 hits in the U.S. majors by year’s end. Next season, with a little luck, ICHIRO will surpass the 3,000 hit plateau, insuring his enshrinement in Cooperstown. –He is truly one of the greatest players in the history of baseball (besides being modest to a fault).
    ———–
    BRAVO TO YOU, ICHIRO SUZUKI!!!!

  59. jahndoh says:

I don’t know if the hand mashing over Gurley’s injury is because people aren’t reading what’s out there on him, or because they don’t realize his injury and it’s repair was simpler and cleaner than APs and he’s several years younger than AP was at the time with far less mileage on his legs.

There’s always a risk taking a guy coming off of surgery, but if you could go back and get AP (without the off-field baggage) the season after his ACL, you’d draft him 1st overall. Ladanian Tomlinson and other football people call him the best prospect SINCE AP, and I think that’s the kind of player that puts us over the top to become a contender. Our offense will be geared for the long haul and tooled to hurt teams in several ways. Our defense will be geared toward owning the LOS and destroying QBs.

Sounds pretty good. In the spirit of “swing for the fences” that GDP has espoused all offseason, I say if Gurley’s still on the board ( I think there’s a 50% chance or more he’s gone tbh) take him and get ready to see a Fins team that doesn’t fold in December (and beyond) but rather, one that comes into it’s own.

This article is chock full of factual information on a guy who could become the next Miami Dolphin, so I suggest those who haven’t been following Gurley much since he’s hurt and they took him off their boards…use it to learn about him. I had some revelations myself. Leg extensions and Single legged squats? Same weight (heavy!) on both legs!
    http://mmqb.si.com/2015/04/29/nfl-draft-todd-gurley-recovery-acl/

Instagram video of him sprinting on a treadmill…can you tell which leg is injured (if you didn’t already know..)? I sure can’t!
