I think thats pretty much true. May get a good look at the DT’s and De’s first step, maybe get to see how the LB’s react in pass coverage.

Nah QB’s would be considerably easier in OTA’s. WR’s too since they dont have to worry about getting creamed over the middle when they are catching passes/
You can still get a feel for route running and hands. Doing it after being hit is a different beast, but all these guys have played football before and have been hit so it’s not the first time even if not in the NFL.
True — and the rules for DBs are the same in OTAs as they are in pads. Only thing you wouldn’t be able to see is if they can deliver the whacks.

As for the many new faces in the receiving corps — Michael Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson are out with Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker, and Greg Jennings replacing them — Perkins isn’t so sure about the position being upgraded.
“I’ve seen those dudes do it multiple years in the NFL,” Perkins said of last year’s group. “These guys I’ve seen them have one good year. I don’t know if they’re good players or if they had a good year. So right now I still favor last year’s receivers.”

6. Speaking of Ryan Tannehill’s health, there was no grand moment of embarrassment for the offensive line — particularly the guards — today. Dallas Thomas was fine. Billy Turner was fine. For Thomas, that was an improvement over last Monday’s open OTA. Rookie Jamil Douglas did take some first-team snaps over Thomas. Veteran Sam Brenner did get a handful of first-team snaps over Turner. Coaches are just mixing and matching at this point.
Jason Fox was the starting left tackle as Branden Albert continues to rehab his knee. The starting line RT to LT: Jason Fox, Dallas Thomas, Mike Pouncey, Billy Turner, Ja’Wuan James.
Can’t put any stock into OL performance reports in OTAs. Good or bad.
Agreed, it’s just fundamental stuff. You see what these guys are doing against guys with pads, the sleds etc. It’s when they start to somewhat scrimmage you get a better idea.

Well, he’s already been getting return work on ST’s, he caught 84 passes as a slot receiver last season.
I’m sure he’ll line up outside at times, but what is he really wanting?
Be the ball carrier on reverses, throw some passes on trick plays, or….I get it, he wants to play some CB after seeing Lippett getting all the attention of 3 INT’s today…lol 😉
Seems he and Jennings are both best suited to the slot……so he might get his wish. They are going to rotate and they don’t always go three WR.

Our coverage scheme is not the issue, #6 in pass defense even with all the injuries at LB and the secondary last year. We also don’t play exclusively zone just because we play off man. That’s a total fallacy that keeps getting repeated. We also rushed just 2 probably 3-4 times last year, it’s just when it was done that fans have blown that way out of proportion.
I know all this, but when it was used, it was usually not in the right situations nor at the right time…cost us a win or two.
I do like some of the 5-2 D tho, when you have the right matchups.
Must be nice for a DC to think he can stop the btwn the tackle run just with his DTs…….guessing his mind is racing with what else he can do.
GD, it’s just a pet peeve of mine with the zone and 2 man rush thing. Every game we lost you could go back and find other plays not made left on the field. It’s when it happens late fans use that as a colossal mistake.

Right, he’s talked about creating more turnovers…he’s got to be thrilled with Lippett today…but lets get most of those turnovers from base defenses by winning matchups and being assignment sound.
I’ve never even mentioned soft zone, but playing coverage with game on the line against the likes of Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers simply does NOT work. The playcall is compounded when your corners are playing off and soft technique. It’s not a man vs zone thing, it’s a corner technique and the record is there for all to see, it’s the technique he coaches and calls most often.
Wasn’t calling you out, I see soft zone mentioned here a lot and it’s not accurate. The coverage scheme is not the issue, it’s execution. Were were #2 in pass defense for 10 games and finished #6 using the same scheme. You look at the what happened in games and guys were there to make plays and didn’t a lot of the time.
Play calling is the most common and easiest scape goat. But I have to admit play calling at the end of the game in the Super Bowl was very questionable. Then again, the WR on Seattle didn’t execute his route properly and Michael Irvin pointed it out in a feature on NFLN. If he does they score anyway and nobody questions anything.
Good point…is why I too mentioned playing off the ball/man. I watch the alignments just prior to the snap. Was usually screaming at the tv. Seemed to be content with trying to keep everything underneath…a certain Olivadotti use to do that and it drove me insane….lol
Ok, before you blast me Tim, I do think Coyle is way ahead of Olivadotti. 😉

Part of the problem with Olivadotti’s defense was he played the DL off the ball and his LBs 10 yards back. LOL
That and the defense was lacking talent big time. It wasn’t all his fault but he sucked.
We now have a likely Top 3 DL. I want to see it used very very aggressively.
This will help the LB’s & secondary.
BTW, I think our secondary will be a plus, the FO loaded up lots of nice competition & youth for Coyle’s forte.
One thing I’d like to mention on Coyle is that Philbin & he agreed his scheme was too complicated based on what players were saying last season.
So there’s your players not executing in crunch time.
I believe Joe & he wants to scale it back some, simplify it more, so the players can read & react quicker, be more decisive.
We’ll get to see how this plays out in TC & exhibition games.
Too many personnel packages and formations where guys had communication issues. That is what = cutesy.

Everyone faces adversity in the NFL but what you do with what you got defines you.
Coyle’s solution late in the season to a depleted secondary was to call for more secondary guys to be out there (to cloud the routes apparently). It goes without say that you take away LB/DL when you are adding more DB. Miami’s strength on D was in the front 7 not in the back 4 and that’s why I was frustrated with Coyle. When he lost a few LB vs NE earlier in the season, he adjusted by adding more DL. When he lost DB he reduced the amount of guys available to attack the LOS (albeit LB/DL). That’s a reflection of him and his DB coaching background. He simply calculated his risk wrong (that minimizing damage to the secondary comes as a function of time the QB has to throw).
I’m not saying it didn’t work and he didn’t make mistakes, but it doesn’t mean that’s his philosophy.
I also think because of Dion Fuckface being a #3 pick the coaches had to find ways to get him in the game when back in the day he would have sat until he was ready. Carl Banks was also a #3 pick back in 1984 and played sparingly as a rookie until he was ready. We had to force DF in the lineup because of his draft status and that changed some of schemes we ran. Now we don’t have that issue so we can probably stream line that and go with our best players/formations more often.

The Dolphins are continuing to show faith in their 2013 third-round pick. Thomas enters the summer with the first team and is the early favorite to start for Miami in Week 1 at left guard.
Thomas, by the way, also isn’t concerned with the outside criticism from Dolphins fans and media.
“I can really care less what outside people have to say, because they don’t know what goes on in house,” Thomas told ESPN.com on Monday. “They’re just listening to what [other] people say from the outside and Twitter and all that. So you don’t pay attention to that.
“Your coaches tell you what you need to do, what you need to work on and how to be a professional.”
Thomas said one point of emphasis this offseason was to get stronger. Too often Thomas struggled holding the point of attack last season both as a guard and offensive tackle. That led to quarterback sacks and negative plays in the running game.
Thomas also changed his diet last year to get in better shape and it led to playing a career-high 14 games, including nine starts. Thomas believes Year 2 of dieting and getting stronger this offseason will make him a more complete offensive lineman.
“Everything I did was predicated on getting bigger and stronger,” Thomas explained. “Right now I’m showing everything I did in the offseason. The development of becoming an offensive lineman, you have to get bigger and stronger every year.”
Thomas has to hold off competition at left guard in training camp, most notably rookie fourth-rounder Jamil Douglas. Despite outside pessimism, Thomas believes he will be an improved player in 2015. This is a big third year for Thomas.
“When I go out there now it’s easier for me,” Thomas said. “It’s no thinking. It’s just playing ball, which is what you want to get to.”

I wanna see his back pedal, how fluid his hip movement is, and how well he changes direction, etc.
Yeah there’s a ways to go. We already know Taylor can play, he just has to stay on the field and become durable/reliable. Bowman is a guy you can lean on, has experience, has made big plays, has good size and skills. He’s a solid pro DB/CB who also plays STs and excels there.
I’m excited about the competition in the secondary and seeing it play out.

That was an Ireland money transition that has been completely revamped. He got cocky with extra picks and cap, went bonkers and really didn’t land any significant players with the top picks or his UFAs, and most of them have all been replaced.
Let’s see if that was the problem. Let’s hope so. LOL

GD, it’s just a pet peeve of mine with the zone and 2 man rush thing. Every game we lost you could go back and find other plays not made left on the field. It’s when it happens late fans use that as a colossal mistake.

Tim you ever watch basketball? Most of the games either team has a chance to win at some point in the 4th qtr, so 75% of the time what happens for 3 qtrs. isn’t as important as what happens when the game is on the line.
In the NFL at least the first 3 qtrs. are watchable, but it’s the same thing, 75% of the time either team can win it in the 4th. It’s when it happens late that fans use that as a colossal mistake, because when it happens late it is a colossal mistake, if your team loses.
Johnny isn’t an NFL QB, and never will be. I said the same thing before the draft.
