Entrare! Welcome back to Mustachio Cuts a place to talk Miami Dolphins football and facial hair!

jordanPhillips5You won’t believe the appuntamento I have today…Jordan Phillips, the Dolphins segundo pick!  Applausi!  (Mustachio claps)

I can’t wait for the big elefante to get here.  I made some nice desserts for him.  Oh, you no know? Mustachio a capocuoco too!

Here he is!   Come in Mr. Jordan Phillips.

MustachioBarberChair

Come in!  Si Accomodi at Mustachios!  I’m so glad to have you here.  (he dusts off his chair)  What a good pick you were.  Magnifico Pick!

Some people say they no come the pick.  They volere a linebacker or a defensive back.  Or even Offensive line.  But not Mustachio…Mustachio knows that with Suh up front our defense can be il migliore if we get Suh some amici to play with.  And the Dolphins took you!  Affanculo!

Buona Fortuna for the Dolphins you were there for us in the 2nd round.

JordanPhillips1

I made some treats for you.  I hope you like cannoli.  What do I parlare?  Everyone likes cannoli.  Look at this whole plate of cannolis!

I made 20 to represent all your solo tackles at Oklahoma.  What a run stuffer you were at Oklahoma! At 6’5, 329 pounds, what else should we have expected.

MusatchiowCannolis

Have a cannoli.  But just uno.  Mustachio has lots of other customers.  And they all come with empty stomaco!

If you take more than one, I will slap you hands away like you did to all the offensive lineman who tried to hold you!

Okay okay…you can have two…but only because you came back from a back injury in 2013 to start every game in 2014.  Impressionante!

But just two okay…I don’t want you to have trouble with your backflips on Musatchio’s account!

PlatewithCrumbs

Hey Jordan Phillips?  What happened to all the cannolis???  Affanculo!  When I wasn’t looking?

Hopefully you can still backflip?  You are a freak athlete, no?  Very rapido and agile!  Rob Rang compared you to pro bowler Dontari Poe before the draft and called your athleticism and size eye popping!

MusatchiowZeppoli

Eye popping like this plate of Zeppoles!  Mmmmmm!

Deliziosio no?

Okay this time Mustachio means it.  Just one!

Mustachio heard that you were tearing it up in rookie camp.  Impressing everyone early.

That is good…maybe you can make a push to start and take the starting job from Earl Mitchell.  Mitchell played well last year, but the   cielo is the limit for Jordan Phillips.  Next to Suh, you can be a force!

JordanPhillips2

You will have to keep up your impressive performances in OTAs, training camp and preseason.

The libro on Jordan Phillips is that he is pigro…(whispering) and pigro is bad…

But what do you expect people to say when the guy is big, athletic and strong and did not dominate at the college level?

PlatewithCrumbs2

Hey Jordan Phillips…not the zeppoles too!

What an appetite for pasticceria you have?

Too bad you don’t play against italian desserts…

hmmm…that give’s Mustachio an idea…

BradyCannoli

Now you can have all the cannoli you want!!!

Still worried about Branden Albert though . . . If he’s not healthy, that makes a huge difference.

By the way, anyone ever see the comedian Jim Norton? I saw him on TV over the weekend, had me roaring, just don’t watch it with your wife, daughter or any other females. Geez! LOL

Caleb Sturgis will miss remainder of OTAs with a leg injury, per Joe Philbin.

Philbin says OTAs includes mini-camp. So earliest Sturgis will return is late July for training camp

  6. stangerx says:

getterdone — thanks for all the updates, and especially for putting in the time to offer different takes on plays in one post.

  7. stangerx says:

Heard Crowder flat out say on my way to the store — “only position you can tell anything about on defense during OTAs is DB.”

    • D says:

I think thats pretty much true. May get a good look at the DT’s and De’s first step, maybe get to see how the LB’s react in pass coverage.

    • Tim Knight says:

So wouldn’t that be the case with WRs too, and to a degree, LBs in coverage and TEs?

      • stangerx says:

My guess is WRs would be the equivalent on offense. Could add in QB too, but a bit of a difference when you have the red jersey on. My guess is you do stuff you wouldn’t otherwise.

      • D says:

Yeah but he was focusing on defensive players, i included LB’s in coverage as an addition to his list.

  8. Rockphin says:

I know it’s only one OTA practice, but do we have a ball hawk? LIppit with 3 ints today.

    ———————————-
Nah QB’s would be considerably easier in OTA’s. WR’s too since they dont have to worry about getting creamed over the middle when they are catching passes/

    • Tim Knight says:

You can still get a feel for route running and hands. Doing it after being hit is a different beast, but all these guys have played football before and have been hit so it’s not the first time even if not in the NFL.

    • stangerx says:

True — and the rules for DBs are the same in OTAs as they are in pads. Only thing you wouldn’t be able to see is if they can deliver the whacks.

  10. Rockphin says:

yeah, not clicking either of you guys links….

  11. Rockphin says:

    Just because…..

  12. stangerx says:

Think the grasshopper Perkins has been waxing sensai Omar’s cars too long……the only one he can possibly talking about is Stills. And how many years did Gibson do it?
    —————————-
As for the many new faces in the receiving corps — Michael Wallace, Brian Hartline and Brandon Gibson are out with Kenny Stills, DeVante Parker, and Greg Jennings replacing them — Perkins isn’t so sure about the position being upgraded.

“I’ve seen those dudes do it multiple years in the NFL,” Perkins said of last year’s group. “These guys I’ve seen them have one good year. I don’t know if they’re good players or if they had a good year. So right now I still favor last year’s receivers.”

    • Tim Knight says:

Right now I don’t care what he thinks and it’s pointless anyway. He’s annoying that way, he likes to question everything this team does ad nauseam.

  13. Rockphin says:

It HAS to be the most repeated Gif ever now…

  14. stangerx says:

LOL Rock — but think about all the dudes who have people walk into there office…….and somewhere Jahn is really pissed. 🙂

You got me all wrong Stanger. It’s Tims friends the dancing fairies that I get tired of seeing.

I don’t see the point in defending myself, but that ONE time I said that, there was about 50 moving gifs on the page, the site was UBER slow loading and NONE of them were bouncing boobs. But alas, carryon samesongers!

      • stangerx says:

LOL — glad you have your priorities straight. And those are dancing fairies (even if each word might be true)…..they are finely tuned athletes. 🙂

  15. Rockphin says:

I hate clicking on a link to a NEWSPAPER’s WEBSITE and finding only video. SMH. Don’t they WRITE anymore!? (Especially video that won’t play on my phone! )

  16. Rockphin says:

    6. Speaking of Ryan Tannehill’s health, there was no grand moment of embarrassment for the offensive line — particularly the guards — today. Dallas Thomas was fine. Billy Turner was fine. For Thomas, that was an improvement over last Monday’s open OTA. Rookie Jamil Douglas did take some first-team snaps over Thomas. Veteran Sam Brenner did get a handful of first-team snaps over Turner. Coaches are just mixing and matching at this point.

Jason Fox was the starting left tackle as Branden Albert continues to rehab his knee. The starting line RT to LT: Jason Fox, Dallas Thomas, Mike Pouncey, Billy Turner, Ja’Wuan James.

    • Jahndoh30 says:

Can’t put any stock into OL performance reports in OTAs. Good or bad.

      • Tim Knight says:

Agreed, it’s just fundamental stuff. You see what these guys are doing against guys with pads, the sleds etc. It’s when they start to somewhat scrimmage you get a better idea.

  17. Rockphin says:

is something wrong?? noone other than X and I seem to be posting…..

    • stangerx says:

LOL — everyone is just sitting there staring at bouncing boobs. You ever see the Andromeda Strain….just like the flashing light for the chick with epilepsy.

  18. getterdone says:

Stanger, thanks for the props on the OTA posts. You’re most welcome.

    • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think he should be either.

      • getterdone says:

Well, he’s already been getting return work on ST’s, he caught 84 passes as a slot receiver last season.
I’m sure he’ll line up outside at times, but what is he really wanting?
Be the ball carrier on reverses, throw some passes on trick plays, or….I get it, he wants to play some CB after seeing Lippett getting all the attention of 3 INT’s today…lol 😉

    • stangerx says:

Seems he and Jennings are both best suited to the slot……so he might get his wish. They are going to rotate and they don’t always go three WR.

    ______________________
Awesome, now stop playing soft zone and so far off the ball. Stop rushing just 2 as well….smh

    • Tim Knight says:

Our coverage scheme is not the issue, #6 in pass defense even with all the injuries at LB and the secondary last year. We also don’t play exclusively zone just because we play off man. That’s a total fallacy that keeps getting repeated. We also rushed just 2 probably 3-4 times last year, it’s just when it was done that fans have blown that way out of proportion.

      • getterdone says:

I know all this, but when it was used, it was usually not in the right situations nor at the right time…cost us a win or two.
I do like some of the 5-2 D tho, when you have the right matchups.

    • stangerx says:

Must be nice for a DC to think he can stop the btwn the tackle run just with his DTs…….guessing his mind is racing with what else he can do.

  24. Tim Knight says:

GD, it’s just a pet peeve of mine with the zone and 2 man rush thing. Every game we lost you could go back and find other plays not made left on the field. It’s when it happens late fans use that as a colossal mistake.

    • getterdone says:

True, but those wtf moments are what sticks in our mind and eats at us all offseason…lol

      • Tim Knight says:

I get that. But I always go back to Coyle wasn’t trying to lose the game. No coach does something because he thinks to himself, this outta fuck this game up for us, let’s do it. LOL

      • getterdone says:

Right, but there are times not to get all cutsie either just because it worked in practice or looked good on paper.
I think all the injuries had him overreaching for ideas to compensate for the personnel losses.

      • getterdone says:

        all ^cutesy^

  25. getterdone says:

    Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero
Kevin Coyle’s timeline for finding/naming starters at LB, CB? Late in preseason.

    Armando Salguero @ArmandoSalguero
DC Kevin Coyle said it is not fair to say starting CB job is Jamar Taylor’s to lose. Won’t be determined until preseason. Has to perform.
    ____________________
Makes obvious sense. Ya don’t name starters in their underwear. 😉

  26. CavalierKong says:

Flipping Sturgis has glass legs. Has he been healthy at all since we drafted him?

  27. Tim Knight says:

GD, agreed on your 3:50 post. He’s been aggressive most of the time he’s been here.

    • getterdone says:

Right, he’s talked about creating more turnovers…he’s got to be thrilled with Lippett today…but lets get most of those turnovers from base defenses by winning matchups and being assignment sound.

  28. Jahndoh30 says:

I’ve never even mentioned soft zone, but playing coverage with game on the line against the likes of Peyton Manning and Aaron Rodgers simply does NOT work. The playcall is compounded when your corners are playing off and soft technique. It’s not a man vs zone thing, it’s a corner technique and the record is there for all to see, it’s the technique he coaches and calls most often.

    • Tim Knight says:

Wasn’t calling you out, I see soft zone mentioned here a lot and it’s not accurate. The coverage scheme is not the issue, it’s execution. Were were #2 in pass defense for 10 games and finished #6 using the same scheme. You look at the what happened in games and guys were there to make plays and didn’t a lot of the time.

Play calling is the most common and easiest scape goat. But I have to admit play calling at the end of the game in the Super Bowl was very questionable. Then again, the WR on Seattle didn’t execute his route properly and Michael Irvin pointed it out in a feature on NFLN. If he does they score anyway and nobody questions anything.

    • getterdone says:

Good point…is why I too mentioned playing off the ball/man. I watch the alignments just prior to the snap. Was usually screaming at the tv. Seemed to be content with trying to keep everything underneath…a certain Olivadotti use to do that and it drove me insane….lol

Ok, before you blast me Tim, I do think Coyle is way ahead of Olivadotti. 😉

  29. Tim Knight says:

Part of the problem with Olivadotti’s defense was he played the DL off the ball and his LBs 10 yards back. LOL

That and the defense was lacking talent big time. It wasn’t all his fault but he sucked.

    • getterdone says:

We now have a likely Top 3 DL. I want to see it used very very aggressively.
This will help the LB’s & secondary.
BTW, I think our secondary will be a plus, the FO loaded up lots of nice competition & youth for Coyle’s forte.

  30. getterdone says:

One thing I’d like to mention on Coyle is that Philbin & he agreed his scheme was too complicated based on what players were saying last season.
So there’s your players not executing in crunch time.
I believe Joe & he wants to scale it back some, simplify it more, so the players can read & react quicker, be more decisive.

  31. getterdone says:

Today’s OTA straight from the horse’s face, err mouth. 😉
I do like the emphasis on red zone work, need more TD’s there!
Also he mentioned letting Landry get some outside work in certain matchups.
9:36 min video….good stuff from Coach Philbin:

  32. Al in MIA says:

    Tim,
Everyone faces adversity in the NFL but what you do with what you got defines you.
Coyle’s solution late in the season to a depleted secondary was to call for more secondary guys to be out there (to cloud the routes apparently). It goes without say that you take away LB/DL when you are adding more DB. Miami’s strength on D was in the front 7 not in the back 4 and that’s why I was frustrated with Coyle. When he lost a few LB vs NE earlier in the season, he adjusted by adding more DL. When he lost DB he reduced the amount of guys available to attack the LOS (albeit LB/DL). That’s a reflection of him and his DB coaching background. He simply calculated his risk wrong (that minimizing damage to the secondary comes as a function of time the QB has to throw).

    • Tim Knight says:

I’m not saying it didn’t work and he didn’t make mistakes, but it doesn’t mean that’s his philosophy.

  33. Tim Knight says:

I also think because of Dion Fuckface being a #3 pick the coaches had to find ways to get him in the game when back in the day he would have sat until he was ready. Carl Banks was also a #3 pick back in 1984 and played sparingly as a rookie until he was ready. We had to force DF in the lineup because of his draft status and that changed some of schemes we ran. Now we don’t have that issue so we can probably stream line that and go with our best players/formations more often.

“Bobby McCain has shown up at every practice making plays as a young player,” Dolphins DC Kevin Coyle said of the rookie from Memphis.

  37. Al in MIA says:

Would be nice if Miami did indeed hit a home run on both McCain & Lippett.

    • D says:

We carried 6 Cb’s last year. We definitely will be cutting someone thats of good quality unless we keep more this year. Its a good problem to have even if the stingy side of me doesnt wanna let any of them go.

      Zack Bowman
      Will Davis
      Brent Grimes
      Bobby McCain
      Brice McCain
      Sammy Seamster
      Jamar Taylor
      Tony Lippett

So 6 spots, 8 candidates. Seamster seems easiest to say is one of the trim down guys but who do you choose next? Bowman who has good size and has shown some good stuff early? Either of the McCain bro’s, both of which are pretty good. Taylor and Grimes seem to be locks, Davis then? Thats going to be a hard cut, unless they keep one fo them and count him as S/CB hybrid. Then you got an even harder decision at S where you would have to cut two from this list.

      Louis Delmas
      Shamiel Gary
      Don Jones
      Reshad Jones
      Michael Thomas
      Cedric Thompson
      Walt Aikens

Gary seems most likely, but whom after that, Jones who does a good job as our gunner? Michael Thomas the versatile guy who was the Patriot game savior? Delmas who is a good mentor and still has some decent play left in him it seems? Hard decisions.

      • stangerx says:

They sure did pop in a lot of them. Only blue chips are Grimes and Reshad. Hope some serious cream rises to the top out of the rest.

The variable pricing they put in is making tickets more expensive, especially when teams with big fan followings come into town and for the good seats. Good news is that the Texans ain’t one of those and the upper deck seats are even cheaper. Fest tix should be less than last year.

  58. getterdone says:

The Dolphins are continuing to show faith in their 2013 third-round pick. Thomas enters the summer with the first team and is the early favorite to start for Miami in Week 1 at left guard.

Thomas, by the way, also isn’t concerned with the outside criticism from Dolphins fans and media.

“I can really care less what outside people have to say, because they don’t know what goes on in house,” Thomas told ESPN.com on Monday. “They’re just listening to what [other] people say from the outside and Twitter and all that. So you don’t pay attention to that.

“Your coaches tell you what you need to do, what you need to work on and how to be a professional.”

Thomas said one point of emphasis this offseason was to get stronger. Too often Thomas struggled holding the point of attack last season both as a guard and offensive tackle. That led to quarterback sacks and negative plays in the running game.

Thomas also changed his diet last year to get in better shape and it led to playing a career-high 14 games, including nine starts. Thomas believes Year 2 of dieting and getting stronger this offseason will make him a more complete offensive lineman.

“Everything I did was predicated on getting bigger and stronger,” Thomas explained. “Right now I’m showing everything I did in the offseason. The development of becoming an offensive lineman, you have to get bigger and stronger every year.”

Thomas has to hold off competition at left guard in training camp, most notably rookie fourth-rounder Jamil Douglas. Despite outside pessimism, Thomas believes he will be an improved player in 2015. This is a big third year for Thomas.

“When I go out there now it’s easier for me,” Thomas said. “It’s no thinking. It’s just playing ball, which is what you want to get to.”

Oh boy! Some really amateurish reporting going on from our local beats. Do they ever evolve and learn what GMs, coaches and players say?

Ehhh heee… because Lippett pissed off 3 passes today do you see him as a starter? Ehhh heee!!!!

    • getterdone says:

He’ll also piss off coaches by holding & interference when WR’s start getting past him.
I wanna see his back pedal, how fluid his hip movement is, and how well he changes direction, etc.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yeah there’s a ways to go. We already know Taylor can play, he just has to stay on the field and become durable/reliable. Bowman is a guy you can lean on, has experience, has made big plays, has good size and skills. He’s a solid pro DB/CB who also plays STs and excels there.

I’m excited about the competition in the secondary and seeing it play out.

But are their ceilings as high as Lippett’s? That’s all he was trying to say, sure it was amateurish, but an interesting thought none the less.

    Adam Beasley @AdamHBeasley
Last Sturgis note: His career FG rate is 77.5%. Since Carpenter was released, DC has made 90.5% of his kicks for BUF.

    • steveccnv says:

Sometimes getting cut is a wake up call, doesn’t mean he would’ve made 90% for us.

    • Tim Knight says:

That was an Ireland money transition that has been completely revamped. He got cocky with extra picks and cap, went bonkers and really didn’t land any significant players with the top picks or his UFAs, and most of them have all been replaced.

Let’s see if that was the problem. Let’s hope so. LOL

GD, it’s just a pet peeve of mine with the zone and 2 man rush thing. Every game we lost you could go back and find other plays not made left on the field. It’s when it happens late fans use that as a colossal mistake.

Tim you ever watch basketball? Most of the games either team has a chance to win at some point in the 4th qtr, so 75% of the time what happens for 3 qtrs. isn’t as important as what happens when the game is on the line.

In the NFL at least the first 3 qtrs. are watchable, but it’s the same thing, 75% of the time either team can win it in the 4th. It’s when it happens late that fans use that as a colossal mistake, because when it happens late it is a colossal mistake, if your team loses.
