The Dolphins doubled up on defensive tackles in RD 6, and overall to that point, spent 5 of 6 picks on the defensive side of the ball. While Davon Godchaux is more of a slippery, elusive DT, Taylor is more of a power penetrator with a good strong burst. Taylor had some good production at Oklahoma State. He started 34 games over his 3 years at Okl. St., and his last season, his Junior season, Taylor racked up 51 tackles (31 solo), 13 TFL, 7.5 sacks, 1 PD, 2 FF’s and 1 FR. Pretty solid season.
Taylor is not ideally built for a DT, he is big in his upper body, but too thin and narrow in his lower body. He was projected by Lance Zierlein to go RD 6-7, and that’s exactly where he landed. He’s not going to be expected at this point to be anything more than a guy in the rotation, providing he makes the team. He does have some good upper body strength, but a lack of general flexibility and lower body girth and power may hinder his chances. He has a shot to make the team, but he has some competition, and can also land on the PS, if he doesn’t make the 53.

Yeah except Wake had 7 sacks before he went down with the Achilles injury in game 7 in 2015. Also his first season he was a backup to Porter and JT.
I feel like wake probably has 2-3 more years left, im not sure if we hold on to him much longer, however, just depending on how things go for us with draft, etc. Still i would rally like to see him crack 100 sacks with us. That for sure earns him a ring of honor induction, and potentially a hall invite. I think he would be worth it, because 100 with as few other weapons that were on some of the teams he was on, i think shows that 100 is even more impressive than it would be otherwise.
Also im not saying there weren’t reasons he had lower numbers when he had them, im just saying it is what it is and that’s the pattern. Im definitely not saying he takes every other year off. I mean hell you could say this upcoming year he might be single digits because he might not have as many snaps due to sharing time with Harris, so it could happen again, and there would be reasons for it. Trust me i hope he sets records, i hope the pattern breaks, and i was more joking about the pattern, though it is undeniably there.

I think Wake will retire before we ever release him. He’s very well respected within the org and has always been fair in contract negotiations. Just my gut feeling.
I hope so, i mean i had years i thought he was done, and i was one of the people that might have said, we might as well walk away because right now he’s pretty much not reliable (after a couple years of injuries, some of which i didn’t really think he’d bounce back from). Time and time again, the guy proved how wrong i was for thinking that so at this point i hope we keep riding with him until the tires fall off and he makes the decision to retire as a Phin without him having to bounce around to any other teams before he finally hangs it up.
Yep! His work ethic and the way he takes care of his body as he ages impresses everyone in the org and around the league. I think he even said at one time this is where he wants to be and win.
If we go with 9-10 DL like last year even bringing that many to the game, he could be real productive monitoring his snap count. That’s where Hayes comes into the picture. Fede is still trying to hold onto a spot as well with Branch and Harris on the right side.
Sad that Taylor left us for those two sasons, because those were two of his worst and his average when he was with us was good enough that had he been in a dolphins uni he would have been at a number around 151 sacks, applying the average number he has as a phin.
There is zero way that Achilles injury shouldn’t have significantly affected his pass rushing. Freak of nature is absolutely right.
Man the FA’s in the available list is just ridiculous some of the names that are there.
There is definitely a storm brewing deep down in Okoye’s soul. Really impressed after listening to his interview, he has the right spirit, and there is some fire burning deep down in there, so its just a matter of whether or not he has the refined skills to play the position. He might have a good chance to make the team, also with his physique and athletic traits, im not sure if it might not be as a DE for us. Id be concerned being Warmsley, Fede, or either of the rookies Taylor of Godchaux.
That’s a good thing. Okoye is an intriguing prospect. He has other opportunities in life but seems to want prove he can do this NFL thing.

If we keep 10 im going to bet Okoye is on the list, in fact i think even if we keep 9 he is likely to be one of them. Im thinking Wake, Harris, Suh, Phillips, Branch, Hayes, Godchaux, Okoye. The last spot is a head scratched, I just dont think Fede, last year of his rookie contract and not pushing to be a starter really screams holding on to him. I also feel like Taylor might need time to get better technique and better strength in his base, o complete his skill set, so he could be a good PS candidate. A few of the UDFA’s are as likely as those guys to get that last spot too, as there is a lot of talent from those UDFA DE/DT’s that were brought in.
You list looks fine to me, but i think Fede and Taylor are stilla good way from me feeling certain about them to pencil them in. Id say thats the way im leaning currently, but im just not there with them yet.

WOW!!! I don’t put Wake anywhere near Taylor, unless we’re strictly comparing pass rush ability and results. Taylor was a much more rounded player, and did so many more things than Wake, and keep in mind, wasn’t always playing DE and rushing the passer. 77 passes defensed, 46 FF, 29 FR, 8 INT’s (3 for a TD), 6 TD’s after FR’s. Hard for me to let that go that Wake and Taylor are “equal”. Taylor did a helluva lot more on the field than Wake does, did, or ever will do.
Taylor also has more than double the amount of tackles Wake has. Hard to compare the two in my mind.
I do agree with you that its hard to completely compare the two, but overall, i think they are pretty equivalent for what they did in their time at the position and assignments of their specific position. In other words as far as being worthy of hall of fame consideration, i consider them pretty equivalent.
I dont think its hard to compare them, i do agree Taylor has the edge, and part of it is due to his height advantage, for example the 77 PD’s, is going to be next to impossible for Wake to compare, and ints for that matter. Wake has 15, and 1, which isnt bad imo, and Taylor did have a 4 inch advantage in height. The FF’s and Sacks, if Wake makes it to year 15, he would be pretty close to if not more sacks than Taylor and probably right around the same number of FF’s. Tackles, also, im not comparing those at all as Taylor wasnt a true DE, he was a hybrid DE/LB so i would expect him to be schemed to make more tackles, than Wake who has been more of a true pass rush DE.
I do think Taylor has the advantage, but i am also not as far apart on them as you are. Wake given his situation, his position, and lack of competitive players around him for most his career, i just think he is pretty worthy of Hall consideration and pretty close to calling him equivalent to Taylor. I also dotn think i ever saw Taylor molested like they seem to let happen to Wake. I cant count on one hand how many likely sacks were taken from him just last year (and its been a pretty strong pattern throughout his career) by people pretty much taking him down by his head because he was around them so fast that’s all they could get hold of.
So i get your love for Taylor, and i dont think its misplaced, but Wake is a much more comparable player than i think you are giving him credit for.

For the same reasons you’re discounting Taylor’s tackles, and penalizing him for his height, are some of the reasons why they shouldn’t be compared. I think Taylor made much more of an impact than Cam has.. He was much more of a game changer. Just how I see it. fair or not, I don’t remember Cam coming up big at all in games that had playoff implications. I kind of remember the opposite in fact, of him being completely neutralized.
Some of that has to do with him being the only big threat, so he was a target, but sometimes, great players overcome that.
JT is getting his gold jacket, and for good reason. We’ll see about Wake, but ain’t it great the convo about him and Taylor came up?
I think JT was more dynamic where Wake mainly settled in as pure edge rusher on the left side. But Wake’s explosion off the edge is one of the best that I have ever seen.
Wake is absolutely fabulous off the outside edge…..better than JT, who could control a game from a bunch of spots. Jason is the better overall player, but then what did Dan Fouts do other than throw passes?
Taylor did so many things, his versatility was fantastic, and his size and athleticism hard to match. Wake is an excellent pass rushing DE, but even measuring him as just a DE, he’s not especially stout against the run, he’s more of a pass rusher.
You are right…..JT did so many things well. 🙂
His technique is almost flawless, i agree with the explosiveness, but i think its his technique and motor that are unequaled. I have seen others with a similar or equivalent get off, Derrick Thomas’ i believe was probably the best i ever saw, but Wakes is pretty close and the way he gets under the OT’s shoulders taking away any counter except choke slam, is remarkable. Combine that with no apparent fatigue, and that means he eventually is gonna get him man or 10 yard holding penalties, except of course they arent calling them.
JT had great see ball get ball instincts. He was a great player and the discussion from my side isnt that JT wasnt as good, its that Wake is better that is being given credit. I am saying that if you look at his numbers, specifically in the pass rushing department (in my opinion the only way to compare them), and you see a dude thats on the same level. Do the math, and if you look at the per year stats, they are pretty equivalent, look at the average per game and Wake’s are better, and do it off the per snap number and Wake’s are even better still. When he is on the field, Wake is a difference maker on par with HOF’ers. Thats not taking away anything from Taylor, its just saying Wake deserves a jacket one day too.

I wasnt using JT as a “he’s better than JT” i was using JT as a litmus test. JT was a first ballot HOF’er, and a comparison to him, showing that each person (as different as may be argued) were equally as dominant, was used only to support the assertion that Wake too should be considered HOF worthy. Media peeps are making the Landry situation more than it needs to be, Landry is letting the business stuff be between the business people, the team is doing the same. FO vs the agent are working out the details that is fair for team fair for the player and i think both have the perspective of doing whats best to keep Landry here. The agent isn’t going to come out and say “Landry wants to test the open market, because its not true, Landry has said as much, but he also isnt going to say yeah he wants to be here so bad we arent going to get what we feel is fair, because that wouldn’t be doing what he is paid to do. I thought the trade made little sense for us as a team at the time…..but we got what we paid for. Suh being there must make DC’s game plan whole lot, both in terms or worry and how to compensate for the wildcard part of him.
Some hack on SBNATION writes an article on, if the NFL were having an expansion draft like the NHL, which 12 players would the Fins keep. When the NFL does this each team gets to save about 40 or so players, not 12.

Provided the so-called ‘injury bug’ doesn’t cripple us this year, our O-Line has a very good chance to be a top-5 unit in the NFL. Problem is, we’re likely to fall victim to the ‘injury bug’ this year… especially regarding Pouncey.
Top-5?…..I’d be happy with above average. Even if Pouncey is healthy we have one stud and one we are hoping will be.

Look at the way Suh is built. He doesn’t look like everyone else. I remember watching him play in college and saying geez look at this dude. He throws people around like they don’t belong.
He does core strength training, so he’s strong in the middle. Now with Phillips training with him, let’s hope he can get some of that Suh motor.
Built is the key thing…and not so much about how he hits the weight room. He is a man among boys. Just like Mean Joe Green was back in the day, even if not as much now with the other guys having personal trainers and such.
I expect this year to be something in between the Raiders and Cowboys 2016 seasons. With a close playoff loss in the division round, after winning in the WC round, then in 2018 being true contenders.
I expect Parker to be like Chris Chambers in his breakout year.
I expect Todd Bowles to get canned by the jets mid-season in their suck for…season.

We were ranked 10th in sacks allowed and 9th in rushing average. But yeah….the OL had absolutely nothing to do with those rankings. Everything is their fault. Blah blah blah.
The OL was great when healthy and decent when only a little banged up. I don’t think this is breaking news, and why above we wrote how good we thought they could be this year.
I thought when we were healthy the OL was good. Why are we blaming anyone? We made the playoffs for the first time in 8 years and we were playing 2nd and 3rd string players at multiple positions down the stretch. Last year was a good season for this team. The future looks bright. 🙂

I think it’s hard to say how our OL will perform this year…too many unknowns right now. Pouncey’s health? Who plays and how do they play if Pouncey goes down? Who plays guard, and how good do they play? Can Tunsil step in and not struggle? I know folks want to assume he’ll be ok, but until he does it….it’s still a question mark. Will James return to a higher level of play? And, of course, injuries. We basically have question marks…to a certain extent…at every position on the OL. They need to keep getting better.
A lot of teams have OL issues. A lot of these guys coming out of college are not really ready and every team is trying to find a place for young OL as they develop. It’s not easy to put together a quality OL and maintain it. We see it all across the league. There are like a half a dozen teams who have what you would call really good O-lines.

I think he and Alonso are a good pair and then we have some other LBs who can chip in when needed. But they are the core guys. You’ll see them both in the box quite a bit in base and in nickel.
And McMillan is going into a real good situation. He has the opportunity to be starter while still learning from a good vet group. I think he’s going to be a good one.
Have no idea how much Timmons has left…..but also darn sure what he does have left is exactly what this D needs.

It’s not about sacks with Suh. Build a defense around his dominant force, something we haven’t done well since he’s been here. I like what we have now better than what we had when we signed him so we’ll see.
Suh is a guy who draws a lot of attention and he beats players up physically the way he throws them around. He intimidates. We need other players to feast off the opponents fear of him, not be the option/target to stay away from him. I’m liking our defensive depth more than in past years. We’ll see.

Son, agreed on McMillan. But we don’t have to rely on him just yet. He along with Misi, Hewitt and Hull or someone else can contribute when needed. What I love about McMillan besides his physical attributes is his approach to the game. He’s a student who studies and doesn’t act like he’s all that. He works on his game and he’s only 20 years old. That’s why we drafted him, he fits the same criteria as Harris. 🙂
Stanger, Timmons had 14 tackles and 2 sacks against us in the playoffs last year in January. I don’t think he’s a guy with little left in the tank. He’s 31, not 36. 🙂

I’m going by the last I saw of them. I’m not seeing decline yet. You’ll know it when you see it like with Mario Williams last year. I saw it happen to LT, it was tough watching him be a shell of his former self.
Stanger, not challenging you being for signing Timmons. I think we tend to look at 31-32 as old and it simply isn’t the case for a lot of players. Some guys are more durable for whatever reason. Timmons has missed 2 games in his entire career and has had some of his best seasons the last 2 years. I’m hoping we got a guy who still has another two good seasons in him and not tapped out as we get him.

They can do that because they retool prior to it being a necessity. That’s been their formula for years. They let Joey Porter walk and he had 5.5, 17.5 and 9.0 sacks for us in 3 seasons as a 3-4 OLB.

I do think they were both great players in their day. Zach was #154 in the 5th RD, so the Dolphins got great value out of both Nick and Zach. Hard to compare players from different eras, but no need, both were great players.
