Isaiah Ford #15, RD 7, Pick#237

26_5289711

With the 237th pick in the 7th RD, the Dolphins selected their 2nd player on the offensive side of the ball, and a pretty good one too, in WR Isaiah Ford.  The 6’2″ 195 Ford was a very productive receiver at Virginia Tech.  a 3 YR starter, Ford twice went over 1000 yards receiving, and over his 3 YR career at VaTech, he caught 24 TD’s, his best being his Sophomore year, where he had 75 receptions, 1166 yards and 11 TD’s.

Ford brings to the Dolphins the skills to compete for those 50/50 balls, and the size to do it.  He is more of a possession receiver than a deep ball threat, running a 4.61 40 at the combine.  He does run good routes, and has learned how to vary his speed and use short burst quickness to get open.

Isaiah Ford had somewhat of a disappointing mini camp, and finds himself kind of buried on a deep depth chart of WR’s, including Jarvis Landry, Devante Parker, Kenny Stills, Leonte Carroo, Rashawn Scott, and this year’s undrafted free agents Damore’ea Stringfellow, Drew Morgan, Malcolm Lewis and Francis Owusu as well as FA pickup Mitch Matthews.  Obviously, Ford has his work cut out for him, and being drafted won’t put him ahead of any of the guys he’s competing against, only strong performances will.

So that’s it for the 2017 draft class.  We focused on defense, taking 5 of 7 on D,  and improved the depth of our defense significantly, but one more good draft on defense could put us over the top.  On offense, we brought in an OG and a WR later in the draft, and Asiata has a shot at starting this season, despite being a 5th RD pick.  Overall I think we did well, and the team should be better with the help of our ’17 draft class.

GO DOLPHINS!  Zero in!

    Defense and Pass Pressure, 2016

WOW! Talk about all over the place for our Phins. And as Scott Kacsmar (the author) noted, “The coverage needs to get better in Miami”… and it will be better this year, IMO.

Incredible that we were 32nd in the NFL when it came to 2-3 pass-rushers, but #1 when it came to 4 pass-rushers.

    • Tim Knight says:

Not really, we were undermanned much of the time. Talent matters.

      • mf13ss says:

Agreed about being under-manned much of the time, but still INCREDIBLE the disparity (#32 to #1). And definitely agreed with TALENT MATTERS! Our healthy Defensive base is NICE.

      • steveccnv says:

I don’t care about the disparity, it’s just the way we were exploited last year. The hack says the coverage needs to be better. Typical idiot that just assumes something after seeing the stats. We had injuries and only one LB, but other reports say our coverage was good. I don’t know who’s right, that’s why you look at the tape.

I played against Jim Kiick, that’s how old I am.
    ——————————————————–
he was recently placed in a nursing home down here in South Florida because he couldn’t take care of himself in a run down appt he was staying in. So Sad…

    • stangerx says:

lol….but kids these days don’t know how easy they have it. Maybe old man Chad Henne can get together with Ryan and tell him how tough it was in the old days.

  5. BailBondMike says:

Just spent 5 days in Keaton Beach, FL snorkeling for scallops, great time and a lot of fun.

Have I missed any news? Are OTA’s over until training camp?

    • Mike E. says:

Haven’t missed a thing (Which is a good thing). OTA’s over till training camp in July

    • stangerx says:

That’s pretty cool. Were you just getting the scallops for dinner or looking to make some money too. Have no clue about scallops other than the commericial guys use boats boats.

      • Mike E. says:

I like to eat them, but never caught one, and more thankfully, was never caught by one either. lol

  6. BailBondMike says:

Stanger, we were catching them to eat. Recreationally you are only allowed 2 gallons in the shell per day. We got our limit each day in just over an hour. We were in only about 4ft of water. I also speared two big flounder as well. It’s just for the fun of it. We go out fishing at 6am until 10am then come in and catch our limit in scallops. Head in, clean the fish and scallops, take a shower and we are drinking beer, grilling, and playing corn hole by 2pm. Get up the next day and start all over again. Lot’s of fun!

    • BailBondMike says:

Due to FL’s strict recreational limits, you can’t make any money off it. If you have 2 guys in a boat, that’s 4 gallons of scallops in the shell which might cover your cost of fuel that day if you were to sell them.

    • Tim Knight says:

Sounds like a lot of fun.

    • stangerx says:

Sounds awesome. Also seems lots of fresh seafood….nothing better. Also thinking you guys were thinking…..

“You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey’s uh, scallop-kabobs, scallop creole, scallop gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There’s pineapple scallop, lemon scallop, coconut scallop, pepper scallop, scallop soup, scallop stew, scallop salad, scallop and potatoes, scallop burger, scallop sandwich.” 🙂

    • Tim Knight says:

It’s one thing to have pressure, every QB has to deal with some pressure but those times when it’s an absolute jailbreak has to stop.

    • mf13ss says:

By contrast, Football Outsiders (as I posted a couple of days ago) has Tannehill as #8 w/o pressure. Regardless, we’ve got a top-tier QB when it comes to this statistic.

This O-Line of ours had better be good this year.

      • stangerx says:

Goes back some….and don’t know what “clean” means…..but PFF also said Tanny was great a blitz but dad when “under pressure.” So many stats these days. Am thinking when he reads blitz he at least knows to get it out quick though.

      • stangerx says:

        “dad” = “bad”…..but not always 🙂

      • mf13ss says:

“Clean” = unpressured… as in, his jersey is kept clean from being knocked around/down into the dirt.

      • stangerx says:

I been pressured many times, but least for me it made a difference to me at least when my jersey got dirty. Like I said so many stats. Before it was just about sacks and pressures.

  8. mf13ss says:

I’m not sure how I missed it, but Tony McDaniel signed with the Saints 11 days ago: 1 year/$1M, as predicted. SMH that we didn’t go after him as he’s still one of the better run-stoppers in the game… we could have used his services in our interior rotation. 😡

Okoye, Godchaux, and Taylor have a LOT on their plates… I’m guessing one gets cut, one goes to the PS, and the other makes the 53… we’ll see. We lack DEPTH at the DT position in a MAJOR way.

If we don’t pursue a player(s) who is cut from another team on the march to final 53’s, here’s a list of available FA DTs…

    http://www.spotrac.com/nfl/free-agents/all/defensive-tackle/available/

    • Tim Knight says:

There are a lot of teams who don’t have a Suh or a young player like Phillips with his ability though. We’re talking depth here and we’ll see what the coaches think once TC starts. Then you look at maybe adding a solid vet DT who has experience and is still available. This team wants to develop young players. We always say build through the draft then when we do we no likey. LOL

      • Mike E. says:

Okoye is a beast. If he can put it together, he can be a playa

      • Tim Knight says:

Hope so. We’re also going to see a lot of hybrid formations utilizing more DEs in nickel and dime. It’s been hinted we’re gonna have some speed packages this year.

      • mf13ss says:

I’m not talking depth here, rather a ROTATIONAL player who can get it done when Suh or Phillips need to be spelled. Just give me one savvy vet who can stop the run while Okoye, Godchaux, and Taylor develop.

  9. Mike E. says:

    M

We’ll probably pick up a vet, unless they really think one or 2 of those guys are capable. If that’s how it is, I’m cool with that.

    • mf13ss says:

I’m down with whatever… so long as it works at the end of the day! 🙂

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s what I was saying. If the coaches don’t like what they’re seeing early on in TC from the young DTs, they’ll look to add a vet who can at least stop the run. It’s not like teams were scrambling to sigh McDaniel with him signing for 1 year/$1M 11 days ago. There are other guys like him out there.

  10. pheloniusphish says:

    How’s everyone doing today?

  11. pheloniusphish says:

M – DT aren’t the reason we couldn’t stop the run last year. LB was. With the exception of a few athletic freaks like Suh around the league, DT is plug and play position that a rookie can step into.

    • mf13ss says:

I think it was a little of both, but my larger point is that we’ve got total inexperience behind Suh and Phillips… who will both need to be spelled at times. Give me a savvy vet to help this year until the young pups are ready to eat like rottweilers.

      • Tim Knight says:

Some teams have little experience or top talent with their top 3 guys. Let’s see what the young pups show in TC before already declaring they’re not ready. I think that’s what the team’s approach is.

We did upgrade/deepen the backend at LB and at DB. We’re definitely better there than last year.

  12. Tim Knight says:

M13, that is depth though. Anyone behind a starter is depth. And like I said we might see more lineups with say Wake, Hayes, Branch and Harris on the field on longer down and distance to give Suh and Phillips a breather. To me the key to helping the defense is also our offense possessing the ball longer and more often so the defense isn’t out there all day.

Two key things for this team improving to me is:
    1. Better ball control on offense and putting themselves in more manageable down and distance.
    2. The defense playing better on 3rd down – not having a team in 3rd and 17 and allowing a 1st down.

How many times did we stuff a run, get a sack or forced a penalty and then just erase it by allowing a big play on 3rd down? Too many for my liking.

    • mf13ss says:

Right, but we’re getting into semantics regarding depth vs rotation. We’re on the same page, I just would prefer a vet in the rotation (for depth). 🙂

      • Tim Knight says:

I know what you’d prefer, and I don’t disagree. I think the team want to see if they’ve got the answer already on the team first.

      • mf13ss says:

I follow ya, and that’s certainly what we’re doing. I just see our cap space and see a potential need (help us if Suh or Phillips get injured). I’m cool with what we’re doing… I’m just erring on the side of caution and wagering that our inexperience could hurt us.

        All good! 🙂

  13. Mike E. says:

What up Phelon! It’s so beautiful out, and I’m in my office for 13 hours. Good thing there will be more days like today

  14. Mike E. says:

    M

I know you dig stuff like that, did you see Okoye’s pro day numbers at Central Florida’? They were insane!

    • mf13ss says:

Yes… the former Olympian is quite the athlete. Let us hope it can translate to a potentially NICE football career. We shall see!

    • Tim Knight says:

The main concern I have with Okoye is that his career started in 2013. This is his 5th season being on 6 teams. I know he really wants to prove he can play football. Not much time left to prove that. The time is now.

  15. pheloniusphish says:

We have Suh and Suh-lite (Phillips). Most teams don’t have either

  16. pheloniusphish says:

“You have a great job Phish. LOL”

    Yes, yes I do.

  17. Rockphin says:

we don’t have the money for back up / rotational DT’s Suh is here. Everything is different now.

He get’s paid like 10 players he needs to play like 10 players.

    • stangerx says:

He plays 85% of the snaps at DT. And we drafted two young bodies. I’m more worried about Phillips.

      • Tim Knight says:

At least Phillips owns his shit admitting his weaknesses and working out with Suh in the offseason. So that’s encouraging. His upside is huge, his downside is he is what he is which isn’t bad, just not consistently good.

  18. Tim Knight says:

Stanger, I love Key West. Great party town yet laid back with beautiful weather and waters. My wife and I did the drive twice from Jupiter, once with another couple and once just us. We snorkeled, did a sunset cruise, charted a boat fishing in the flats, had good food and drinks, laughs and good times. We won’t do the drive again though, we’d fly in. LOL

  19. drg says:

The Keys and a Dolphins game against the Jets sounds like a nice getaway to me. I’m going to try and fit it in the schedule to join you guys this year.

    • stangerx says:

How you been doing drg? Great to see you. Game is Sun, OCt 22 (tickets with the crew and tailgate no problem) and we get together night before. Keys is a 4+ hour drive though and the airport ain’t big.

  20. drg says:

Tim, did you drive all the way to Key West? My wife and I did the drive about 30 miles past Key Largo and it wasn’t too bad. Have only done Key West as a cruise port. Any suggestions past Key Largo that are worth the drive?

    • Tim Knight says:

Yeah man, twice. Once with a stop in Fort Lauderdale to pick up friends, then straight from Jupiter the 2nd time. Long drive. LOL

Had a lot of fun though. We didn’t stop other than to get a quick bite or to go to the bathroom or take some pictures if we saw something cool. We went to Key West both times. So I don’t have much to offer about the other spots. The drive is a cool experience when you’re surrounded by beautiful water and going over bridges. But twice is good for me. 🙂

      Have a great time.

  21. pheloniusphish says:

Drg – Try Spark’s Landing on Long Key (just before you hit Marathon).

    F. Stanger – I like doing the sunset from Pepe’s on Mallory Square. Plus they have the best Pargo Entero Frito (whole fried snapper).

Tim – If you fly down, you will go through my operation when you leave.

  22. Mike E. says:

drg – Do it man! Come on down to FLA, and join the Fest-ivities!

I hope you make it Drg

Sonny – I was there – It was the Titans game, we got wrecked. Jahn was there too.

  23. Phindog says:

We did the drive from Ft Laud to Key West 6 years ago to celebrate our 25th Anniversary. Rented a convertible Mustang and had a Great week. Fun time and thinking about doing it again soon.

    • stangerx says:

One of the most beautiful drives there is. Right up there with the Pacific Coast Highway…..but man it is it slow, especially when going in the direction of either getting into the keys on a Friday or out on a Sunday.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

We’ve driven three times from Naples to Key West … going through Kendall and Homestead … but it is a very long drive and can be bumper to bumper on any kind of holiday or even a weekend. It takes basically all day and is very fatiguing due to the traffic.I doubt I will do it again.
But there is a catamaran ferry from Marco Island that only takes 3 hours.
It takes less than an hour to fly from Naples to Key West.
I have never done either of those though.

  24. drg says:

    Guys,

Thanks for the suggestions. We are remodeling half of our house so I’m hoping things settle down by October and I can join in. The only fest I was able to attend was a quick affair. I had my boys at the stadium for the first time and we drove down from Orlando so time was short and we were only able to stop by to say hello. We’d definitely have more time if it’s just me and the wife. The boys get the Chargers game this year. Hope we can pull it off!

    • stangerx says:

One more suggestion…….Fly into Lauderdale or Miami and catch a one-way flight (almost a shuttle) to Key West. And if you guys only saw it on a cruise stop you have not seen it at night. Take a cab or uber to your hotel for however long (won’t need a car while there) and on the Friday before the game rent a car and drive back to meet us for the night-before party and the Fest day. Seems a win-win from both your side and the better half’s.

Well, I say if anyone sees a blue #12 around then that person should depopulate the person wearing it…….

  26. Rockphin says:

    Man! I’m bored and don’t want to work and you guys are not keeping up your end of the bargain here. No one is posting today! Let me try this;

Ryan Tannehill is an Elite QB…..

  27. stangerx says:

Sorry Rock — here is one for you to think about. Bash PFF, bash the line, or (my favorite)…..think there may be some other big ugly in our future once camp opens.

“In their ranking of all 32 projected starting offensive lines, PFF ranks the Miami Dolphins 26th. They explain the ranking, of which Miami is only ahead of the San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, Houston Texans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Cincinnati Bengals, and Seattle Seahawks”

    • Tim Knight says:

So now PFF knows what the future will bring. LOL

What I think people ignore is that this team believes in continuity and keeping their guys. 7 OL returning this year with some new additions lead by Larsen and Asiata, and then some long shots but you never know.

They also ignore Bushrod coming off an injury last year, not only switching sides but positions. Steen playing through two injuries that eventually ended his season. I understand the concerns with Pouncey but until we know his status this year we’re talking about a pro bowler who only played in 5 games last year. James also played much better down the stretch leading us to pick up his 5th year option.

We’ll see how it all plays out but 2017 is not the same as 2016 this time last year.

      • Rockphin says:

I remember when we played Dallas a few years ago in preseason and the narrative was how bad our offensive line was the following year they drafted one guy or maybe was an undrafted guy and they have been one of the best offensive lines in football since

      • Tim Knight says:

This post confused me. You talking our OL or Dallas?

  28. mf13ss says:

I just went through all 32 teams’ rosters — top to bottom — and I’m here to tell ya… we’ve got a VERY NICE roster compared to most. Barring the injury bug, there’s no reason why we can’t make it back to the playoffs this season and possibly go DEEP.

Just for fun, here are my top STACKED units in the NFL going into the ’17 season. Mind you, this isn’t an exercise of the BEST players in the game… just solid quality throughout a given unit.

QB: Vikings (Sam Bradford, Teddy Bridgewater, and Case Keenum… 3 NFL starting QBs on one unit? That’s STACKED).

RB: TIE- Bengals (Jeremy Hill, Giovani Bernard, and Joe Mixon), Jaguars (Leonard Fournette, TJ Yeldon, and Chris Ivory), and Cowboys (Zeke Elliot, Darren McFadden, and Alfred Morris).

WR: Dolphins (As fellow Phin fans, we already know how STACKED this unit is. We likely have 6 WRs who could start on most other teams).

TE: Patriots (Rob Gronkowski, Dwayne Allen, and Matt Lengel… and I despise admitting as much).

O-Line: Cowboys (Tyron Smith, Chaz Green, Travis Frederick, Zack Martin, La’el Collins, Jonathan Cooper, and Joe Looney).

D-Line: Dolphins [MR. Wake, Suh, Jordan Phillips, William Hayes, Andre Branch, and Charles Harris. Now get me a quality vet DT (1-2 year deal on the cheap) to rotate with Suh and Phillips… we’ll be indestructible this year as the pups cut their teeth].

LB: Jaguars (Telvin Smith, Myles Jack, Paul Puz, Dawuane Smoot, and Blair Brown… that’s STACKED). Special mention to the Panthers (Shaq Thompson, Luke Kuechly, Thomas Davis, and David Mayo).

DB: Seahawks (Legion of Boom, need I say more… and they aren’t just HYPE, either).

Now then… as it pertains to US in the above…

QB: Between Tannehill and Moore, we’ve possibly the best 1-2, 1-2 in the NFL. And even if not, we’re definitively in the top-5.

RB: If Ajayi continues his ascension as a ‘Beast Mode, Part Deux’, if Damien Williams continues to refine his already NICE game, and if Kenyan Drake becomes all he was drafted to be… this unit could EASILY be a top-5 this year. Much of this will be contingent upon our O-Line (continued below). Plus, we must not sleep on the likes of Storm Johnson and De’Veon Smith.

    WR: #1, IMO

TE: Between Julius Thomas and Anthony Fasano, I think we’re already a top unit: we’ve got the seam-splitter and the expert (best in the biz) in-line blocker, respectively.
If any of our young bucks can step it up, we’re easily a top-5 unit this year.

O-Line: IF all goes well (zero injuries), this unit could be a top-5… but I’m a realist. One key injury will derail this entire unit… not to mention key injuries (note the plural). We can run-block… but we’re not yet there in terms of pass-protection. Orlando Franklin (Gase) and Nick Mangold (Tannenbaum) are still out there as FAs.

D-Line: #1… again, get me that vet DT (1-2 year deal on the CHEAP) to rotate with Suh and Phillips (<– going to break through this year!). Y'all can't tell me that any of Okoye (going on his 6th team in 5 NFL seasons), Godchaux (5th Rounder), or Taylor (6th Rounder) are ready/experienced for the burdens that lie ahead of them this year in spelling Suh and Phillips. Should have signed Tony McDaniel, SMH. Prove me wrong, Okoye/Godchaux/Taylor. We're now committed to defending the run while still getting after the QB.

LB: DEFINITELY top-10 with Kiko, Timmons, McMillan, Koa, Hewitt, and Hull… possibly top-5 if our D-Line performs better this year (yes… the DF7 relies on one another… beyond $$$, there's good reason Earl Mitchell and Mario Williams are no longer here). Injuries to this unit last year KILLED us, coupled with pizz-poor D-Line play in defending the run (we miss you, Kacy Rodgers).

DB: IF our DF7 does it's job, it makes life SO much easier for the back end of our Defense. We prefer size/length/strength over agility/stealth/quickness… and there's nothing wrong with that, so long as the DF7 does it's job. In a great many ways, I see us trying to mimic "The Legion of Boom" (hey, we've got Byron Maxwell). If our young bucks live up to their billing — some of whom are BALLHAWKS(!!!) — I'd say we're close to becoming a decent unit, here. But AGAIN, it's all contingent on our DF7 to make our DBs work correctly… not the other way around. In short, we don't employ "shut-down DBs"… too much zone play with "man-to-man/JAM" prototypical DBs and too often playing 5-10 yards off the LOS. We'll never be able to beat the Patsies* with this strategy… they'll just continue to hit us in underneath coverage as they have for the last 15+ years.

  29. naplesfan2010 says:

The PFF ratings above for the OL have 3 playoff teams and 2 more on the cusp rated lower than Miami, so it’s not a death sentence.

  30. naplesfan2010 says:

Gosh MF13 … that was a lot of high quality work there bro, thanks!
I do think we have a top 3-5 WR corps. I am not really sure there is any way to say which team is #1 in a whole position group, but being in the top 3-5 is something we can say and so I can agree with you on both our DL and WR being top 3-5.

  31. naplesfan2010 says:

I would put our QB situation in the top 10, because Moore is a top 3 back-up, the kid is a top 5 3rd stringer, and Tannehill has thrown for a lot of yards, is mobile, and is entering the prime of his career + Adam Gase gives this position group a boost as against most other HCs.

I would put our TE group only in the top half of the league. But they could move up to a top 10 group without surprising me. Top 5 is even possible.

  32. naplesfan2010 says:

Let’s say Pouncey plays at least 14 games. Then our OL has 3 first rounders and Bushrod has made the pro bowl. We have the strongest rookie OG and two backups who have started dozens of NFL games. The same guys (4/5) blocked for a thousand yard rusher last year and gave up fewer sacks than most teams.

So that should be a top 5 OL … top 10 at the outside. If Pouncey plays 5 or fewer games, we could still be in the top half of the league. Or we could tumble to 25th, but I don’t think we will.

  33. naplesfan2010 says:

RB is very hard to predict. An injury to Ajayi …n/m … let’s nto even go there.
I do NOT think Ajayi’s year was a fluke. The way he got those yards was not freakish. he is a thousand yard rusher in this league. he caught a ton of passes in college I think right? so there is room for improvement there and D Williams is a good gadget guy to sneak in and Drake can score from anywhere on the field on any given play, so I would put our RB group at top 10 … or better if Deveon or one of the practice squad guys can give us some 1stDs and TDs as a short yardage bruiserback role.

This post confused me. You talking our OL or Dallas?

Dallas. The narrative that year before the season was how bad Dallas’ O-line was. Then they got that guard the dropped to UDFA and the following year they were among the best lines in the league.

  35. naplesfan2010 says:

Going way out on a limb, I think we have a very good young CB group, but they must continue to grow to help Maxwell get us into the top 5, but it is possible.

At safety Reshad is a top 3 safety and his injury last year might have been a bigger reason for our poor run D last year than most people realize. Nate is as good as Isa and TJ is a top 10 safety so we should be fine there as well. Let’s say that is a top half to top 8 group.

  36. naplesfan2010 says:

LB is of course the big mystery. Because our second string is Misi, Hull, and Hewitt, we have a top 25 LB group. Maybe one of the UDFAs comes on strong and replaces Misi, then you have a second string of all UDFAs. Yikes.

I think Kiko and Timmons are very high quality, and I think Raekwon will be one day soon.
Also the DC is a LB guy, so maybe he can max these guys out with scheme and usage.

If this group is a top half of the NFL squad this year, I will be happy. And we will go to the playoffs.

    • Mike E. says:

LB is better than last year with Timmons and McMillan, but it’s still somewhat questionable. We don’t even know If Misi will ever be cleared with his neck issue. That leaves the depth kind of thin, and I guess McMillan and Hewitt would battle for a starting spot.

  37. naplesfan2010 says:

MF13 did not go into Special Teams, and I won’t go into detail here either. Let’s say at LS we are top 3, Punter we are top 5, and PK we are adequate. For return men we do have 2 guys who can take it to the house and Landry, so that is top half. Our coverage teams are good and our FG blocking team is very good.

I’d say with Rizzi and excellent stability, which is important in this area, we are a top 8-15 ST unit.

  38. naplesfan2010 says:

When pundits say we will regress to 8-8, they are only talking about a two game sag, which can be explained by the tougher schedule. So I get that.
But maybe we might be better this year and thus better able to handle a tougher schedule.
    How about that Mr. Pundits?
I have already detailed our horrendous injury list from last year which went right through the heart of our team at C, QB, SS, and #1 CB, not to mention #2 CB, FS, SOLB, #1 TE and first game starting RB. Surely we will be luckier than that this year.

Gosh MF13 … that was a lot of high quality work there bro, thanks!
    ———-
    You’re welcome… and thank you! 🙂

  40. naplesfan2010 says:

So, going by position group, do we have better talent? Or worse?
    QB — same
    RB — same
OL — tiny bit better or at least the same (Pouncey only played about a third of the season last year, and we won 10 games, many without him.)
    TE — way better
    WR — same
    DL — same
    Edge — a little better (Harris > Jones/Williams)
CB — somewhat better (+ experience and Tank is a better backup)
S — way better (no sofa safeties)
    ST unit — same
LB — hmmm … is Raekwon better than Paysinger? I certainly hope so. is Timmons better than Butler? (LOL) — so I guess we are a little better at this position.

Is that enough improvement to maintain 10 wins against a harder schedule?

    • mf13ss says:

Keep in mind that we’re entering year 2 under Gase. So if we think this roster is good-very good, my expectations will be even HIGHER. YES, I firmly believe we can win 10 games this year… provided the injury bug doesn’t bite certain players.

    • Mike E. says:

You know what Naples, one thing that I think remains to be seen is how Tannehill is and plays with his knee. He can say it’s 100% from today till tomorrow, he’s wearing a brace, and until I see him take off and run with confidence, and get up after being tackled with no issue, I’m a little concerned about him.

      • mf13ss says:

By all accounts, Tannehill seems to be at or near 100%. Nevertheless, I share your concerns… it just seems too good to be true.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

        I very much agree Mike.
But he wore a brace in college, so he knows what that is like, and the tech and expertise are better for him now. Also he was very athletic before, so even if he is diminished a bit, he will still be ok in that regard as compared to stiff QBs.

He has been called pound for pound the strongest guy on the team (pre-Asiata) and Martellus Bennett says he was the most athletic guy on Texas A&M’s whole team!!

The x-factor is mental. But i think Tannehill is a bit of a robot/gym rat in that respect.
He surprised Gase who called him “tough as nails.” Ryan will fight you every inch.

This is no Blaine Gabbert type QB. Ryan took a lot of punishment and never shied away from hits. This guy was a for-real WR. He has been hit hard plenty of times.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

About whether the coaching will be an improvement this year… I balance the “2nd yr under Gase” as a good thing against “we won’t surprise anyone” as a dampening factor. Teams will make damn sure Ajayi does not get 200 against them, for example, and they might roll more coverage onto Kenny Stills as well. That could be a serious dent in our offense if we can’t counter with something.

    • mf13ss says:

We’ll be able to counter this year, trust. If they stack the box to stop Ajayi, we’re going to spread Defenses out… and vice-versa. Julius Thomas is here, replacing the concussed Jordan Cameron. That — in and of itself — is going to be HUGE.

The other thing I like? Ajayi is said to have made leaps and bounds in his receiving game. Stack the box against Ajayi? Audible him to the slot and watch Defenses go NUTS trying to reconfigure.

This Gase Offense in year 2 is going to be FUN to watch.

      • naplesfan2010 says:

totally agree that Thomas will protect Ajayi in the run game.

      • mf13ss says:

        Conversely, on Defense…

We’ve now got three 3-down LBs. What does this mean? 1st and 10, looks like a running down, but their Offense chooses to pass against us. Good luck when we have Kiko, Timmons, and McMillan out there in our base Defense, even with William Hayes and Andre Branch set to stop the run on the edges (who generate pressure as well).

We’ve got POSITIONAL VERSATILITY now on both sides of the ball. We’ve not had this kind of team EVER. As Steve would say, we’re beginning to mimic the Patsies*.

  42. Rockphin says:

Teams will make damn sure Ajayi does not get 200 against them, for example, and they might roll more coverage onto Kenny Stills as well. That could be a serious dent in our offense if we can’t counter with something.

Don’t you think the Bills, after the first 200 yard game, said, there’s no way we let him run on us again. IMO it will depend on the health of the O-line. PLUS we have Fasano blocking on the run downs now which will be a major improvement.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

well said … the Bills though were dysfunctional by that second game. I do agree that Fasano is a nice addition to help the rushing attack.

  43. mf13ss says:

IMO, we’re still one rotational DT (#3 DT) and one O-Lineman (either a LG or C) away from being a FORCE. If we address these two matters, we’re going to ROCK.

  44. Tim Knight says:

RT taking a hit has yet to be seen but by all accounts from him, his coaches, teammates and even the media who watched OTAs say he looks no different and his mobility is not hampered in any way.

  45. Tim Knight says:

Gase has said if teams stack the box in base defense, Thomas is going to see a lot of balls.

  46. stangerx says:

A few baseball fans out there on the board. Tied game in the 9th, two outs, two strikes, swing and a miss and then………a walk off strikeout.

MEDICAL UPDATE: Just brought Mrs. OD home from the out patient surgery center near USF. She had a pretty involved surgical procedure on her foot. She came out of it just fine (with just a bit of whining). She WON’T be able to drive for 6 weeks. And she’ll be sharing the walker I’ve been using for the last few weeks. Do they have “a walker built for two??” My first physical therapy session is Monday morning. Mrs. OD sees the foot surgeon for a follow-up Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, our younger daughter is STILL seizure free more than 2 weeks after her brain surgery!

NOT-SO-GOOD dept; My only surviving sister (the wife of my Brother-In-Law who only missed 3 Dolphins’ home games in 51 years) is scheduled for serious abdominal surgery July 18. Your good thoughts for her would be greatly appreciated.

FINALLY, If my physical therapy sessions do NOT help with my back issues, I’ll be scheduled for a cortisone shot right through the L-5 area. And if THAT doesn’t work, they’ll schedule me for surgery,

But I expect ALL OF US to be ready for FOOTBALL SEASON!!

    • Tim Knight says:

Wishing you, your wife, daughter and your sister all the best.

    • stangerx says:

OD — so good about your daughter…..and even if am hoping for the best, love the walker built for two (and assuming if you need two you would have them). Also happy that surgery was not the first option for your back. Just don’t hit on the physical therapist. 🙂

  48. Mike E. says:

    Tim

Until I see Tannehill run, cut, and get hit in live action, I’m going to be concerned. Just the way I is, I’m a show-me guy

    • olddolphan says:

ME, too, Mike E.! Same goes for our O-Line, in general, and our guards, in particular.

    • Tim Knight says:

Like I said being hit has yet to be seen but plenty of people have seen him run and cut and said he looks fine. Even Omar who admitted to being concerned and not buying that he’s okay said it’s a non issue after seeing him in OTAs, said he looks fine. There was even a play in practice where the first play was a QB sneak and RT picked up significant yardage.

  49. Mike E. says:

OD – I hear ya man! I hope our concerns are totally unfounded, and best wishes to you and your family’s health

    • olddolphan says:

THANK YOU, Mike and Tim!! It’s been a challenging month, to say the least. For about 2 weeks, I averaged less than 2 hours sleep per night. Haven’t done THAT since I worked on war casualties in the Army in 1971. Of all the things I’ve done in life, THAT’s the one thing I’m most proud of. That work taught me what’s REALLY important in life.

  50. Tim Knight says:

It sounds like Urbik will be the #2 center. Read something recently stating that the team prefers him over Steen because it took Steen too long to make calls at the LOS. Not surprising being that he never played center before and admitted to being frightened playing center in a game for the first time. So we’ll probably look at Larsen, Steen and Asiata at LG though all three will probably get reps at RG as well. Larsen may be the emergency #3 center.

    • mf13ss says:

It all depends on who ya listen to. James Walker reported today that Steen is the likely backup to Pouncey while Barry Jackson reported that it’s likely Larsen.

To put it another way, there’s mass confusion in the building… and Pouncey WILL GO DOWN again this year, BET.

Our LG options suck unless Asiata kills it as a rookie over Larsen and Steen (<– not stud LGs to begin with) in camp… which is highly unlikely as it stands.

I'd bite the bullet and sign Orlando Franklin (Miami native, loves Gase, hometown discount) before he's off the FA market. Franklin can no longer command BIG $$$ on the open market, but he's had much success in Gase's system.

We're sitting at nearly $17M under the cap… it's not going to hurt us to spend a few million on Franklin and say, either Paul Soliai or Sen'Derrick Marks.

  51. mf13ss says:

    Mr. Campbell,

BEST wishes to you and yours, my friend. Get well soon… ALL of you.

  52. Tim Knight says:

M13, you haven’t seen Larsen, Steen or Asiata lineup at LG yet you’ve already deemed them as suck options. Do you think the team feels that way?

From what I’ve read is that Franklin sucked last year but you keep mentioning him as the answer. That doesn’t make much sense. Why is he still available, are all 32 teams clueless? The same with the DTs you keep mentioning. They’re not on teams for a reason.

  53. naplesfan2010 says:

We only have 5 games against playoff teams from 2016.

Granted, three of those are against the teams that appeared in the Super Bowl, but…

  54. naplesfan2010 says:

Last year we played 6 games against 2015’s playoff teams,

and we lost 4 of them. (and still got into the playoffs)

However, three of those four losses were among our first four games, which you can say was before Gase and the team really figured things out.

The fourth loss was New England’s revenge game against us at home for taking their home-field advantage with a split last year. But Tannehill was hurt (along with half of the rest of our stars).

  55. naplesfan2010 says:

The reality is we can lose 4 of the 5 games against 2016’s playoff teams and still go 12-4. Or 10-6. We did it last year.

This is what New England has done many times. They have lost 2-4 games to playoff teams, throw in a division opponent or two, and won all of the “easy” games. Voila. Playoff berth every year.

  56. naplesfan2010 says:

If we lose to Atlanta, split with New England, lose to Kansas City, and lose to Oakland, that’s twelve wins. Throw in a wild card like Tennessee (who beat us last year) or Baltimore (who always beats us), and that’s eleven wins. Lose both that’s still 10-6 and we’re in with a wild card (probably).

We play the Raiders at home, in prime time. That should be a great game. I don’t think we will lose all of those games I listed above. The Bucs, the Saints, and the Chargers will all be tough outs, but we are a tough team now (that’s a fun thought). I think the Falcons are vulnerable. Jarvis is making it a personal mission to sweep the Patriots. I think we will probably lose to the Chiefs at Arrowhead, but you never know. The Bucs beat them there last year, when they looked so good all year.

    • Tim Knight says:

If we catch some breaks, I think we could be this year’s version of last year’s Falcons. I really believe that.

      • Mike E. says:

Tim, do you REALLY believe that? lol

      • Tim Knight says:

Yes! The skill level and depth on offense and an improved defense. The Falcons weren’t a top defense last year, but they were productive playing with a high scoring offense. I see similarities and would say so if I wasn’t a fan. 🙂

      • Mike E. says:

I believe you Tim. If the O-line is good enough, I would agree. We have a lot of talent on this offense.

  57. Tim Knight says:

Naples, every year some teams who were real good last year have an off year and the schedule is not what you think it was.

  58. Tim Knight says:

Here are DeVante Parker’s career stats. As you can see his numbers improved from his rookie season to his second season. Many feel like he hasn’t lived up to expectations as a 1st rd pick but remember he’s only 24 years old. Reports all offseason have been good with Parker showing more maturity, learning how to take care of his body better and paying attention more to details. The size, speed and skill is there, now it’s about him wanting to be great. He could change the dynamic of this offense with a breakout season.
    http://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/P/ParkDe01.htm

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I agree he could and should as you say, but I am not sold on him becoming a superstar until the next year. However, if he just improves by a catch and a half per game, he will get a thousand yards and that should be plenty for him to add to this offense. He should get 6-7 TDs from that.

      • Tim Knight says:

Look at his trend even with not being the best he can be last year. The receivers may have to share the wealth if all goes well. Meaning staying healthy and spreading it around with Landry, Stills, Parker and Thomas. Then there is Ajayi, Drake and Williams. The only real newcomer to the forefront at the skill positions on offense is Thomas and he knows Gase’s system. A perfect storm could be brewing. 🙂

Fasano and Gray will play roles as will the depth at WR.

  59. Tim Knight says:

Was thinking about this too. If T.J. McDonald is committed to getting back on track with his football career and stays clean, he will be available for both Pats games. I think he’s a guy to put on Gronk and you still have a big, physical safety who can serve as a nickel LB against the run. He’s a big dude for a DB at about 6-2 220. He’s not the size of Gronk or any TE but he doesn’t shy away from contact and likes to play physical and blow people up. He’s a 4.6 guy which is fine on Gronk or most TEs.

This might have been the thinking in bringing him in. Reshad can play a lot of roles and Allen can play the role of traditional safety over the top.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

I think we’ve gotten several “steals” in the last couple of years and TJ is one of them. I believe a Safety pair of TJ and Reshad is a Top 3 safety tandem in the NFL.
Other steals are the obvious Ajayi and Tunsil miracles.

    ———
All available FAs at this time are “3rd-tier vets”. Some are either waiting until after camps end to sign on (they are vets and can train on their own without going through the whole camp rigmarole) and some are awaiting for a preferred destination to call them. At this stage in the game, all 32 teams are likely going to wait so that they don’t have to pay guaranteed money to these guys. None of the above means that these FAs suck and are unwanted.

We have a couple of holes that need to be addressed. I doubt we address these holes until later for the reasons above and to give our in-house talent every chance to succeed via maximum reps in camp.

Things get dicey regarding exactly WHEN to sign these FAs being there are 31 other teams looking to fill holes. If one of their guys go down in camp, they’re going straight to the FA pool and taking what could be an answer for US.

I caution against waiting too long to fill these holes on our team. As I stated, we have nearly $17M in cap space… it’s not like we’re up against the cap and need to be value shopping for scrubs. But if we wait too long, only scrubs WILL be left.

Maybe between Larsen, Steen or Asiata we’ll be alright at LG… we’ll see and camp will be the judge of as much. If not, pray that the FA pool hasn’t significantly dwindled. However, we’ve got a CLEAR hole at the #3 DT position and a clear lack of experience beyond Suh and Phillips.

We’re left to be patient in the interim…

    • Tim Knight says:

That’s what I’ve been saying and the FA pool at this time is not that appealing. How could it be, there are reasons guys aren’t signed.

You always try young first. 🙂

  63. naplesfan2010 says:

We had an almost perfect split last year between rushing and passing.
Let’s say we do that this year and achieve a league average 64 plays per game on offense.
    That’s 32 rushes per game.
    Ajayi-14
    Tannehill-4
    Smith/Landry/Grant/etc.-2
    Williams-4
    Drake-8

    • Tim Knight says:

I think Ajayi will be closer to 20+ touches per game. When you look at him on video he’s not getting drilled and killed. He’s the one dishing out punishment or leaping for 2-3 more yards at the end of a run. Being tackled in the backfield for a loss is not always physically overwhelming. It’s just a loss in yards in the game, the play didn’t work. He didn’t get beaten up.

Just to let you guys know outside of a bias fan perspective, I’m trying to put a ludicrous trade together to land Ajayi in FF. I think he’s going to be a monster and top 3 rusher in 2017.

I’m offering Gurley, Jeffrey and a draft pick, let’s discuss. The reason is 4-6 weeks into your FF season you’re moving guys around anyway due to injuries and poor performances. Core players who are on productive good teams make a difference.

  64. naplesfan2010 says:

    Drake-2
    Thomas–6
    Parker–6
    Stills–4
    Ajayi–1

  65. naplesfan2010 says:

Ajayi rushed for 60 first downs last year.
What a horse! What a stud!

  66. naplesfan2010 says:

Ajayi rushed 260 times last year.
    That’s 16 per game. That’s enough.
I don’t want to wear him out in 2 years
or wear him down before the playoffs.

  67. naplesfan2010 says:

Gase has said he wants Ajayi to rush 350 times but Christensen says that would give him really bad headaches! That’s 21 per game. Remember Ricky Williams getting overused. And Bum Phillips running Earl Campbell to death. Campbell only lasted 9 years and he was 245 vs much smaller Defenders.

  68. mf13ss says:

If we’re playing from behind, Ajayi isn’t going to get 20+ rushes a game. The game plan vs the opponent and real-time game situation will dictate how many carries he gets.

That Gase said he wants Ajayi to get 350+ rushes on the season (coach speak) is telling that he expects us to play with a lead, eating clock as necessary… but things don’t always go according to plan.

I’m not going to worry about how many carries Ajayi gets, so long as we win. And yes, we can win by air as well as by ground.

    • Mike E. says:

It depends on how far behind, and how much time is left. Can’t just become one dimensional.

      • mf13ss says:

Correct. The game plan vs the opponent and the real-time game situation will dictate how many carries Ajayi gets. If we’re getting blown out by halftime, he’s not going to get 20+ carries a game. If we’re only down by a score at any point in the game, he’ll get his carries (he had a career-high 32 carries @ Buffalo last year in the 3-point win).

I’m just stating that it’s unrealistic to put a number on Ajayi’s carries… it’s all going to come down to the flow of the game in real-time. Preparing for the worst, but hoping for the best!

        GO AJAYI!!!

If he makes the most of his opportunities, he’ll earn more carries. No need to give him more time because he was a talented 3rd RD pick. Same goes for LC III. He’s going to have to earn reps, no one cares that he was great at Rutgers, and we gave up 7000 picks to draft him. lol

      • mf13ss says:

Even if Drake earns his reps, he won’t get them if we intend to hand the ball to Ajayi 350+ times (coach speak). That’s more or less the point of the article, and I agree.

I’ve gotten into smoking meats. Last Sunday I made the juiciest most tender pork loin you could imagine… oh it was glorious. It was big too, the thing was as big as my entire arm.

        Sounds like my ex girlfriend

Did she hog all the blankets in the middle of the night too?

  85. Tim Knight says:

I’ve read that Drake has to stick to the script more and not improv as much.

Absolutely! That’s what I stated yesterday and I stand by it, Bro. Nothing is set in stone right now regarding camp battles with TC coming up soon… THAT will give Gase a better idea of who, what, where, when, why, and how.

So for right now, throw out that ‘350+ carries’ for Ajayi notion… it was merely coach speak. We’re not going to handcuff Drake or Carroo if they earn their stripes. If not, oh well! May the best players earn/win their jobs/reps.

And keep this in the back of your mind… Ajayi has a ‘bone-on-bone’ knee. If he can power through it without any trouble or risk of injury, GRAND! It would be wise, however, to not try to turn him into Ricky Williams or Larry Johnson. It would be NICE to have an Ajayi/Drake backfield!

    • Tim Knight says:

You know you never hear about Ajayi having any issues with his knee from him or the team. It seems like that might have been widely exaggerated during the 2015 draft. He sure as hell didn’t look like a guy with that type of condition last year.

I also feel Drake earning more carries to take some of the load off Ajayi would be ideal. Drake has homerun explosiveness and it would make our offense even more dangerous.

      • mf13ss says:

Yessir! THANKFULLY, Ajayi’s ‘bone-on-bone’ doesn’t seem to be any kind of a problem to date… but only time will tell. I wouldn’t want to test fate by pressing him for 350+ carries per year, but that’s just me. If he can successfully and healthily handle that kind of load, more power to him… and more success for our Phins.

+1000000 on “ideal” to have Ajayi and Drake as a tandem, instead of solely riding Ajayi to the ground. If we want Ajayi fresh down the stretch and into the playoffs, it would be WISE to get Drake more involved… granted he earns it.

  87. Tim Knight says:

M13, yeah it’s a long season so you want Ajayi fresh in big games. Also look how well it worked for the Falcons and their two-headed monster in Freeman and Coleman. Of course there are times when you roll with the hot hand. That could also be the case for Drake some weeks. Maybe he’s really balling one week and you ride him for 15-17 rushes instead of say 7-8 spelling Ajayi. Maybe that week Ajayi only has 12-14 rushes. Nothing wrong with that.

Might have just been Walker looking for offseason clicks with a softball Q to his fellow AFC East dudes, but here is what he asked:

“Adam Gase is the second-youngest head coach in the NFL and he took advantage of a last-place schedule to win 10 games in 2016. Is Gase the long-term solution for the Dolphins or is he a one-year wonder?”
    ———————————-

Billls guy — “I watched some bad football from Joe Philbin’s teams, which made me more impressed with what Gase did last season.”

Jets guy — “Not in the habit of anointing first-time coaches after a good year or two because I’ve seen it go the other way very quickly (Google the Jets’ past three coaches), but everything I’ve seen and heard about Gase indicates he’s more likely to succeed than fail.”

Pats guy — Gase seems to be more “the long-term solution than a one-year wonder. It starts with building a winning culture and, from my view in New England, Gase has taken positive steps in doing so.”
