2018 Miami Dolphins – Free Agency – OT

Last week we took a look at the inside guys, the OG’s, but with the possible loss of our RT Ja’Wuan James, we’ll see who’s available to fill that spot.  Of course, we may already have that player on our roster (Jesse Davis), but they may want Davis to continue as the swing man, who can play either OG or OT.  Just so you know, the top guy available is Nate Solder and I’m not even going to add him to the list, because we’re not paying him $13M+, so forget that.  It’s slim pickins folks, I’ll show you what I think are the “best” 5.

Austin Pasztor  6’7 305  27YO

Austin Pasztor, Quinton Dial

Pasztor played last season on a 1 year deal with the Falcons after being the odd man out of a very talented Browns OL.  Pasztor has played both RG and RT and played and started all 16 games for the Browns in 2016.  Last year he was the swing man for the Falcons and he only saw action on 7 games.  Pasztor was an UDFA in 2012, and signed by the Jaguars.  He played in 15 games for the Jags in 2013 starting 12.  At worst, he could be a depth guy for us, or if somehow we don’t draft a solid OL, he can be a decent starter.

***************************************************************************************

Greg Robinson  6’5 332  25YO

panthers-lions-football-9b303d8e19c3d0d7

It’s unusual to see a 25YO OT hit the free agent market, but that’s where the former 1st RD pick is today.  Robinson was overdrafted by the Rams in 2014 at #2 overall, and Jeff Fisher rolled him out at both LG and LT in all 16 games, starting 12. Robinson played his college ball at Auburn, and the Rams went all in on the NFL combine superstar. The 6’5 332 lb behemoth ran a 4.92 40, put up 32 reps, had a 113″ broad jump, so you can see, the big guy can move.  He was a run blocking monster at Auburn, but he struggled with pass protection in college, and those struggles continued in the NFL.  While there’s no questioning his outstanding athletic ability, so far, no one has been able to reach him and get him to better his technique.  He’d be a risk/reward type of signing.  He’s young enough to teach, but do we have the staff in place to do it?  Tough to be confident answering that question.  He’s played 3 full seasons at LT, but maybe RT would be his better side.  Stay tuned.

***********************************************************************************

Seantrel Henderson  6’7 331  25YO

seantrel-story-10-16

Yeah, that Seantrel Henderson.  I wanted us to take a late RD flyer on this kid, because He has the size and athletic ability to become a good OT.  His biggest issue is his strength, as it was coming out of college.  He moves well, but doesn’t have the power.  He may not have the desire either, which has long been one of his knocks, he has the lazy tag.  He has started 26 games for the Bills in his first 2 seasons for the Bills, but the last 2 years he’s been getting splinters on the bench, playing in only 8 games total.  He’d be a cheap sign, that much is true, and if we could get this  kid fired up, he could be a good player, but that’s a big “if”.

***********************************************************************************

Byron Bell  6’5 320  29YO

49e06773bafe892b07306a5cd91e8716-original

Like I said, it’s not a great market out there, and the top dog Solder will really cash in.  Bell played in 12 games last season for the Cowboys, starting only 2, but has been a durable starter for 4 seasons with the Panthers, and 1 season with the Titans. He signed a 1YR deal with the Cowboys last season, and I’m sure he’d love a multi year deal, but I’m not sure if that’s in the cards for the 29 YO RT.

***************************************************************************************

James Hurst  6’5  317

18_JamesHurst_news

Hurst was an UDFA and signed by the Baltimore Ravens in 2014.  He saw action in all 16 games since his rookie season, starting in only 11 games his first 3 seasons, but last year, Hurst started all 16 games at both LG and LT.  Not to kiss Raven ass, but any player that can start 16 games on the Ravens is a player I’d take a look at.  Hurst not only played every game last season, he played well.  He’s played LT, LG and RT.  He’s versatile, and he’s coming into his own, which makes him a solid option for us.

*********************************************************************************

Our own Sam Young is a FA we might re-sign, likely to a short term contract.   If there’s anyone out there you feel should be included, let me know.

    Tim

We knew he had foot issues in college, but we drafted him anyway. I’m sure some other team would have drafted him in the 1st RD anyway, but he’s been a disappointment, as have many other 1st RD WR’s.

  2. mf13ss says:

    Guys,

I think DeVante is the very LEAST of our problems! LOL

    • mf13ss says:

He’s still on his rookie contract; it’s not like we’re paying him $16M/year.

    • Mike E. says:

If we lose Landry, Parkers play will be in the spotlight, and if he has a season like he’s been having, you better hope we find a legit TE or another receiver to pick up what Parker hasn’t been giving us.

      • mf13ss says:

Damn RIGHT I’m hoping we find a legit TE (DRAFT!)… we’re WAY OVERDUE!!! 🙂

      • stangerx says:

If we keep Landry on the tag, Parker will be in the spotlight as well. I took the re-sign of Stills as a sign that they believed in Parker. Think the franchise of Landry is a sign of they still aren’t sure about DeVante this year too. But heck yeah if we trade Landry we better bring in some serious TE.

  3. Mike E. says:

M – Me too man! My heart will sing when we finally turn that card in! 🙂

  4. stangerx says:

According to Omar….. “Ja’Wuan James would likely benefit if Dolphins released the offensive tackle.” Even after reading the article not so convinced of that, but who am I to doubt?

Coach already responded by saying that social media is evil.

      • Tim Knight says:

They’re discussing it on WFAN now.

      • mf13ss says:

WFAN is late to the party!

      • Tim Knight says:

Not really, they’re discussing overall salaries in the league and how they go up every year and being that the franchise tag is at $16+ which Landry has right now, that $20+ for Beckham is not that crazy.

      • this is why you’ve got to do things the right way year after year so you can let guys like that just walk. your offense better be plug ‘n play because these guys are going to want a ton of money and you’re not going to be able to keep paying it.

so, teams are looking for that quick fix and it really doesn’t matter because fans just don’t up and leave. why not draft and develop and bring in the best talent you can as udfa’s?

It’s nuts the salaries these guys are going to be demanding.

    • stangerx says:

His next contract is not even in play till 2019. But maybe his agent is planning ahead.

      • Tim Knight says:

Yes but he might hold out for an extension this year.

      • stangerx says:

I would just pop in a bash on that, but then we both know who Odell’s best buddy is. Not like he and Jarvis won’t be talking/competing.

    • Tim Knight says:

When receivers are so wide open it’s not that difficult to understand.

      • well, one person gets it anyway.

      • Tim Knight says:

I don’t watch a lot of college football but video I’ve seen of Mayfield shows a lot of easy throws with no risk or tight windows. Now that’s not his fault, he’s making the throws that are there. But can he fit the ball in tight windows with defenders baring down on him because that’s how it’s going to be in the NFL?

      • mf13ss says:

You state that as though spead-concepts have yet to reach the NFL. Let me tell ya something: our HC IS of spread-concepts.

      • Tim is right. Guys don’t get that open in the NFL. Most of your throws, especially those in that intermediate area, are going to be into tight windows. Plus, there were plenty of times when you watch him where he’s just standing there looking for someone with all the time in the world. He ain’t getting that in the NFL.

And, finally, that comparison to Wilson is bunk. He has nowhere near the escapability of Wilson. He’s going to learn that fast.

  21. mf13ss says:

  22. mf13ss says:

  23. Tim Knight says:

M13, spread concepts and WRs not being contested are two different things. The NFL doesn’t have the high scores we see in college because some of those opponents don’t even belong on the field with some teams. It’s not even competitive.

  24. ElephantRider says:

OBJ will get his money. It’s not far off that WRs, DEs, and some DLs will be in the 20s and QBs in the 30s.

Then how on EARTH are we to scout players from the collegiate ranks?

  26. son of a son of a shula says:

Baker leading in everything means nothing if you don’t like him otherwise it’s pretty damned impressive

    • I think you need to put things into perspective like Tim said. You look at the talent he had around him in an offense that just had a design to it that was like the Pats of college and the defenses they went up against didn’t know which way to go.

Sometimes I think it’s better to go with a qb who struggled a bit to see how he handled it rather than a guy who’s had nothing but success because you don’t know how he’ll handle it when the pressure is on and things aren’t going right.

There’s only one game that I can recall seeing that happen and that’s the Georgia game and that was an eye opener. I know I’m going to get “yeah, but it was just one game” comment but, yeah, it showed something you need to take into account.

  27. Mike E. says:

LOL Sonny – You can change it back. 🙂

  28. The Flying Pig says:

I’m pretty sure Mayfield can take some credit for those stats

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Well he certainly doesn’t have a noodle arm but Oklahoma only plays the sisters of the poor and they don’t face NCAA level competition

  29. So, the team seems to be EXTREMELY interested in the possibility of signing free agent center Travis Swanson. I’m not saying anything.

  30. mf13ss says:

    Son,

You can read me as a cross between Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sir Alec Guinness and/or Ewan McGregor) and Pac Shakur.

I hear it nearly daily: “you’ve got SOME kind of accent… I just can’t place it”. Just another day as my alter-ego, Jango Fett. 😉

  31. M,
You brought up the SB and the way things went and I just think the 16 gm season and the playoffs just suck the life out of teams and they’re just gased when it comes to the SB. It’s not hard to imagine that type of game every year unless you’ve got a team in there that is just unbelievably deep on the defensive side of the ball that they can keep guys fresh.

  32. ElephantRider says:

    Mayfield’s 2 losses last year he still threw 69%, 290 Yds(avg) and 4-1 TD-INT

It’s not like they got shutout. I’m not pining for the guy or dislike him. There is something about a guy that walks on twice and becomes a starter tho. That’s all.

  33. Tim Knight says:

I’m not anti-Mayfield, but that’s what the scouts need to determine, can he make those tough throws in tight windows. Lots of college players have put up big numbers that don’t translate to the NFL.

I remember RBs for Oklahoma and Nebraska back in the day having ridiculous games in the wishbone offense but they weren’t very good in the NFL. The OL guys were though.

    • mf13ss says:

Just so long as R1P1 isn’t a white man, right, Omar?

      • Tim Knight says:

That’s a little speculative but it’s not impossible. Barkley probably is the best prospect in the draft. But we all know that QBs rule the roost. If the QB happens to be black they also go early. Tired of this contrived approach to slip race into everything. Destroy from within and ruin what could be a really good thing. Awesome! Oy!

  38. Mike E. says:

There has been a lot of speculation that if the Browns didn’t love any of the QB’s so much more than the others that they would take Barkley #1, and whatever QB is there at #4

    • Mike E. says:

I actually think that’s a smart move, because you’re probably not getting Barkley at #4

      • Tim Knight says:

I see the Colts taking Barkley a lot in mocks at #3. Could happen. Who knows, the Giants could too at #2. I wouldn’t fault the Browns for taking possibly the BPA. They can add a QB at #4 easily and with all the picks stock their roster and change the dynamic of their team overnight.

  39. ElephantRider says:

    Colts need RB….so does Giants….

  40. naplesfan2010 says:

Vikings now saying they are in the Cousins frenzy. If they get him, then the Jets will be taking a QB in the draft I think as well as the Broncos.

And don’t forget, the Cards have zero QBs signed. They are worse than us.

Then again there some quality players out there teams might go after cause they fear missing out in the draft..

Where is Bridgewater going? Where is Keenum going? What about McCarrron? And Tyrod?

  41. gee, I didn’t mean to break the blog

  42. naplesfan2010 says:

    Should we pursue Frank Gore?
I like Jerrick McKinnon in our offense.

  43. yep, team is starting fresh on offense. Tannehill is next. going in a whole new direction with the offense this year. Drake and Stills may be the only two remaining at the skill positions that were starters. It’s going to be Carroo, Grant, Morgan and Ford going at it along with maybe a new wr that was drafted and a few new faces who were udfa’s. plus a couple TE’s

    • Tim Knight says:

The only way Tannehill is out of the picture is if he’s not healthy.

      • I don’t agree with that. Colts and Bears both have their franchise qb’s and this team wants one of their own. IF Tannehill stays and, to me, that’s a BIG if his days are numbered. Either he’s traded sometime during the season or at the end of next season and he may find himself backing up a rookie at some point in time.

I’m not saying this in the same context as I said before about thinking they should blow it up. All signs, to me, are pointing in that direction. That’s just my opinion but I’ve got a strong feeling this is the way it’s going to play out.

We trade with either team we’re moving up to their spot in the first and we’re getting a qb. And, we get that qb, Tannehill is gone.

      • Tim Knight says:

Lou, it’s what you want. Gentlemen’s bet thats not the plan.

      • Nope. You’re reading me wrong on this one Tim. I’ve just got that gut feeling because the Bears and the Colts are in the mix and the team is looking to move up with either of them. Like I said, they both don’t need a qb and could be willing to move down.

If we move up with either we’re taking a quarterback. There is absolutely NO doubt about that and, if we do, we’re not spending $19M on Tannehill this year. We’ll take the cap hit and get what we can for him.

      • Tim,
I get the feeling it’s what YOU want. You don’t seem to want to let go of Tannehill like if he’s gone you lose something.

Seriously, it’s like you’re obsessed with wanting him to stay in Miami so he can prove to everybody that he’s capable of winning.

  44. ElephantRider says:

I will guarantee that there will be a day RT17 is gone.

  45. Tim Knight says:

Any guesses on which team for Landry and compensation?

  46. Tim Knight says:

Lou, if you’ve watched how I react when we move on from players you wouldn’t think that. I think Tannehill is part of the plan lead by Gase. I will root for the next guy up just like I did with Ajayi and soon to be Landry. I like players but I’m a Dolphins fan first.

  47. Tim Knight says:

How did the Raiders end up with six 6th rd picks? LOL

  48. ElephantRider says:

Wish Phins had those 6 picks. Then they could trade them all and we’d get a new dud to be labeled……something something 7!

    • Tim Knight says:

LOL, I was thinking about the personnel people for the Raiders with six 6th rd picks and someone bringing up trade options. Someone else yells for what, more 7th’s? LOL

  49. I’m not one bit concerned about the phins wr corps. I’m more concerned about the offensive line and the TE’s. No matter who is back there throwing the ball this year, if our OC and HC put together and offense that utilizes what we’ve got and we can add some key pieces on the o-line and at TE we’re going to be just fine.

You lose a player you have to pick up the pieces and move on. That’s it. So, maybe you pick up another wr in the draft to go along with the guys you’ve already got on the roster and then get some talented udfa wr’s or maybe another late rd guy and you let everyone battle it out.

When you look at what NE accomplished with Edelman, Amendola and Hogan before they Cooks it doesn’t bother me that Landry isn’t with the team anymore. With Stills, Ford, Morgan, Carroo and Grant we’ve got a good young corp to work with. Add one or two more to the mix and we should be okay.

I’m much more concerned with the o-line because we need to be able to run the ball effectively or it’s not going to matter anyway.

  50. It’s going to be interesting to see how the team decides it’s going to clear some additional cap space. They need to get at least one guy on the offensive line and also re-sign some of their own players plus sign the rookie class.

If they do trade up to draft a quarterback, which it looks like they’re definitely wanting to do, then the rookie allotment is going to be even higher.

The next couple of weeks are going to be extremely interesting. The one thing I don’t think they’re going to do is restructure anyone because I don’t think they want anyone on the team that they could restructure around that long.

  51. wyoming85 says:

  52. Mike E. says:

Think back everyone when the Dolphins gave Mike Wallace a 5YR $60M+ deal in 2012. Teams will pay in FA, although then again, it was US paying that stupid money. lol

Landry’s $14.5M per doesn’t seem outrageous comparing it to Mike Wallce at over $12M per 6 years ago, right?

  53. Mike E. says:

Landry was given the franchise tag, with its approximate $16 million salary for 2018, on Feb. 20, the first day it was allowed. Coach Adam Gase said Wednesday the Dolphins want Landry on the team in 2018.

“Yeah, if it works out the way that we’ve kind of looked at things,” he said Wednesday at NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. “Really that’s why we franchised him. We’ll just kind of see how it goes.”

But clearly money was an issue. The Dolphins offered $13.5 million but Landry wants at least $1 million more per year. It’s unclear why the sides can’t meet in the middle.
    *************************************
You know what – I absolve the Dolphins of not trying to do the right thing by Jarvis. If this report is correct, let him try to get what he wants, but let’s please stop the angle that the Dolphins are screwing this up. They gave him more than a fair offer, sounds like he wants to be like his buddy in NY, way overpaid.

  54. ocalarob says:

The Dolphins have the leverage on Landry, he should sign his tender quickly as he needs to shop his services around, no one will give Miami 2 first round picks for Landry so as it stands it’s more than likely Landry will miss FA’cy and then the draft rolls around, all the teams will either get their needs in FA’cy or the draft, after that they will have a money shortage, after the draft who will have the cap space to sign Landry if Miami rescinds their Tag?

I hope this post is not too offensive to some.

    ____________________________________________________________

I don’t think Brown was ever going to have a impact as to when Nelson would be drafted. Brown was a borderline 1st rounder before this week. ….obviously today didn’t help his case.

    • Mike E. says:

Yeah man, not that he was going to go around the same pick, it’s just teams might have said “well, we can pick up Brown in the 2nd”. They still can, but but this combine effort really hurt him if a team was considering him as a possible starter, that’s what I’m saying.

  78. Randy says:

The combine pisses me off. It always pushes guys higher in the draft. I was targeting Daniels in the second round. I really don’t think he’s 1st round talent. Good player…not stand out sort of guy. Dammit.

Daniels is a DAMNED nice player, though!

    • Tim Knight says:

Daniels is one of the latest OL I’ve read up on that I like. That was before the combine. Good to hear he’s doing well. He might be there in the 2nd rd for us.

Man it’s just nasty outside. Rain/snow mix, heavy winds, slushy crap everywhere. Yuk!

  81. BoulderPhinfan says:

Is another team gonna give Landry the 14 15 million/year he wants? I just don’t see that but I guess anything is possible. I wish we had kept him. he’s the best player we’ve drafted in a long time.

    • Mike E. says:

You never Boulder, some team just might. Like I said earlier, we gave Wallace $60M in 2012, so some team could give Landry $14M+. I’d be surprised, but teams that are flush with cap cash overpay

    • rich0322 says:

There are teams interested and I’m pretty sure they already had a good idea of what Landry was asking for.

  82. Randy says:

    I like Daniels. He’s good…not great.

Wow if your Lamar Jackson, you can’t be happy about teams wanting you to work out as a WR when you see yourself as a QB.

    • mf13ss says:

Sometimes one has to swallow their pride and recognize that football evaluators have been doing this for longer than Lamar Jackson has been alive.

I see that this has turned into a mini-RACE WAR, and I find that to be despicable. Where was all this OUTRAGE when Tim Tebow was asked to workout as TE?

      • Tim Knight says:

Was Tebow asked to workout as a TE pre-draft? I always thought that was once he was in the NFL?

      • mf13ss says:

      • mf13ss says:

And yes, Tim… this was at the Combine.

      • Tim Knight says:

Gotcha! I’m not looking at this from a race perspective by the way.

Didn’t teams want to see Pat White at other positions as well?

    • mf13ss says:

I remember this as clear as day.

  87. mf13ss says:

I suppose I should put my opinion out there to qualify everything else that’s been stated…

I DO view Lamar Jackson as a QB… and a really good one, at that. He’ll have to be drafted into the right system (IMO), but he could be a KILLER QB!

I just can’t stand the racial BS I’m seeing all over the place. SPARE ME that $#!T!

YES!!! Teams wanted to see Pat White as a WR.

I do NOT feel as though there is any racial profiling going on here. I DESPISE RACISTS! And I’m seeing racists (from the left) trying to intervene here, regarding Lamar Jackson.

Why the hell has EVERYTHING become political? It’s SADDENING to me, Brother.

PC garbage infuriates me.. Nothing you can do about it though, just take a deep breath
    ————-
    WRONG!!!

AGREED about the PC garbage(!!!), but we can elect people who do NOT believe in the PC garbage, my man!

WE THE PEOPLE!!! Our elected officials should work for US… not the other way around, my man! 🙂

    • Mike E. says:

I get that, but is it elected officials that are saying Lamar Jackson being asked to work out at the combine as a WR is racist?

      • mf13ss says:

I hear ya on THIS matter. You’re going to drag me into a political argument… and I DON’T want to go there, buddy! 🙂

    • Tim Knight says:

Most PC stuff is from the media and corporations that fear losing business due to saying the wrong thing. Many liberals I know don’t really buy into it either other than saying something that is just flat out wrong. On the other hand I know some conservatives with no filter who think it’s okay to say whatever they want as if it wouldn’t offend anyone or at least make them uncomfortable.

  93. Mike E. says:

M – I promise I’m not trying to drag you into anything, and I don’t think we’d be arguing with one another anyway

    • mf13ss says:

I didn’t say that you were INTENTIONALLY trying to drag me into a political argument… that’s not even in your character, man! You’re a GOOD dude! 🙂

I just don’t want to go there with MY feelings… and how PC BS is affecting the world that we live in today. Feel me? 🙂

LSU RB Derrius Guice goes 4.49 at 224 pounds at the scouting combine. Dolphins like him. A lot.
