2018 Season – Game 14 – Dolphins @ Vikings

WOW!  What an amazing finish to the Dolphins vs Patriots game.  That one easily slots historically among some of the best games I have seen this team play.  Even if we lost this game, we went punch for punch with the Patriots all day long, but we came up with a Rocky II ending.  Not sure if you all noticed, but we scored more than 30 points for the first time in regulation, and we did against the Patriots!  Crazy!

Ryan Tannehill.  Forget about the future, this young man deserves a lot of credit for his toughness and grit he’s displayed this season.  You could see he was hurting, and I admire his resolve to stick it out, and help his team to victory.  He’s been getting beat up all season, but like a Timex, he takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

OK, down to business.  This game, aside from the excitement meant a lot to me as a fan.  These are the games in the last decade that we would crumble and succumb to the pressure of needing to win and stay alive, and this team pulled out a stunner against the TD + favorites New England Patriots.  They were clutch.  They made plays, and they got contributions from the QB.  We were missing arguably our best defensive player (Xavien Howard), and it showed, but we did just enough to win.  I think Gase earned some respect yesterday.  Smoke and mirrors, we’re -55 in points and we’re 7-6.  Crazy!  What we as Dolphins fans have to hope is that this game was a springboard to a playoff run.  If we can beat NE when it counts, then no other game on the schedule is impossible

Despite the fact that it will be about 30 degrees at kickoff next Sunday against the Vikings, the game will be in a domed stadium, US Bank Stadium, so the weather won’t be a factor.  It will definitely be loud, but we can overcome that.  The Vikes have had an up and down season, and they face the Seattle Seahawks this evening in Seattle.  At the moment, the Vikings are 6-5-1, and although they have showed the potential to score, their last 3 games they have scored 20, 24 and 10, and have lost 2 of 3.  Kirk Cousins has done well for the Vikes, but RB Dalvin Cook has been battling injuries, and that leaves the much less explosive Latavius Murray as the lead back.  WR Adam Thielen is totally in sync with Cousins, and they have been one of the best if not the best QB/WR duos in the NFL this season.  Thielen has 98 receptions, 1166 yards and 9 TD’s.  We will desperately need CB Xavien Howard back for this game.

As I said in my blog article this past week, the New England game was a statement game, and the statement was “We’re still in this Dolphins fans, stay with us, keep rooting hard, and something special may happen”

I watched the game at my nephew’s house, and although the video is a little rough, it captured that crazy ending, and your faithful “Crazy Dolphins Fan” again.  It’s just funny. Some moments are just humorous when captured on video.  None of us had any idea we were being videotaped by his little Nest camera.

Last 2 games are Jags at home and Bills. No matter what happens on Sunday we will be talking playoff scenarios after. Beat the Jags and pretty much guaranteed week after too. Just sorry will be missing the last two games…. even more so if we win on Sunday.

When I refresh the page on this blog, it just keeps jumping around all over the place, it’s out of control!

  3. Mike E. says:

Stanger – What do you mean you’re missing the last 2 games? Going somewhere?

    • stangerx says:

Yeah given we have no family do a holiday trip each year. This time South Africa…… have a feeling finding the Phins v Jags will be tough.

      • Mike E. says:

Sounds great! I would agree though, might be hard to find, but then again, satellite TV is everywhere.

I think all of us see the flaws with this team, the good, the bad and the ugly. It’s been a lot of things – a transition team, youth, injuries and performance. However, I think we have the potential to be one of the better teams in 2019. We need some good fortune though. Not losing a bunch of starters and significant role players. I want to see us have that magical year again. By the way, go back to the traditional uniforms. It just looks right. 🙂

  6. Tim Knight says:

Mike, unless Tannehill shits the bed down this 3 game stretch he’s our QB in 2019. No it has no bearing about addressing the QB position and upping the ante in 2019. But he’s playing well while being banged up. 8 TD and 1 INT in his last 3 games, his passer rating is well over 100 in those games and he gives the team a chance to win.

We need the entire team to play well. Go get it guys!!! 🙂

  7. pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – South Africa…nice! We are doing December in Key West. Brought the office and the family down. Upside is all the Miami games are televised here.

  8. olddolphan says:

YOUNG STANGER: Have a wonderful time in South Africa. A young lady on our street was born and raised there. She met this guy from New York, they got married, and they now have a beautiful daughter who appears to be 2-3 years old. They’re REALLY nice folks. Hope you and Mrs. YS have a terrific trip!
    ————————–
I HAD A BIGGEE sports night last night. It began when I got home from work and discovered that my sister in Pompano mailed me a copy of the Monday SOUTH FLORIDA SUN-SENTINEL, which carried the headline “DO YOU BELIEVE IT?” It was loaded with color photos of “The Miracle In Miami,” which had occurred the day before!!! LOTS of stories and analysis, including Omar’s column titled “Gase deserves more time to build a winner.” Dave Hyde’s column says the Hook and Double Lateral saved the day, a Dolphins’ season, and maybe a regime. In his column, Hyde reports that Kenny Stills asked Dan Marino “Have you seen anything like that against the Patriots?” Marino replied, “i’ve never seen anything like that (used) against anyone!” It was a pure joy to read the sports section from beginning to end. I’m planning on bringing it to the 2019 Fest for all of you to look over.

Next on the docket was the Toronto Maple Leafs (second in the Eastern Conference) at the first place Tampa Bay Lightning, live from Amalie Arena in downtown Tampa. When word got out that Tampa Bay’s starting goaltender, Andrei Vasilevskiy, was going to start after missing many weeks with a broken bone in his foot, interest was hyped to an even higher level. The Leafs scored early in the first period and moans of “Oh No” could be heard. But, a few minutes later, the Bolts tied the score and it was 1-1 after the first stanza.

Then, all hell broke loose in the second period. Tampa Bay scored three goals and it looked to be over. The Leafs pressed the issue the entire 3rd period, but could NOT get another shot past “Vasy,” and the game ended 4-1, Tampa Bay. Vasilevskiy saved 48 of 49 shots and was, by far, the #1 star of the game. The level of skating by both teams was astounding. It resembled a track meet on ice and was nothing like the era of the Broad Street Bullies era of the 1970’s. Traditional GOONS can NOT skate well enough to play NHL hockey in 2018. Anyway, this edition of the Lightning is regarded as perhaps even better than the team that won the Stanley Cup in 2004. Looks like I’ll be spending some time at Amalie Arena in the coming months ahead.—Next up, a trip to Winnipeg to take on Manitoba’s Winnipeg Jets. Hey, ‘TOBA, will Byfuglian and Hellebuycyk be gracious hosts for the Lightning???

    GOOOO-O-O ‘Fins!!

Yeah, I think we’re in the same place. This team has pulled the rug out from beneath out feet so many times, it’s hard not to be skeptical, but love of the team, and a desire to believe keeps making fools of us. I think this describes it best:

    ———————–
LOL! I’d incorporated this gaffe from ‘W’ into my vernacular (much like “Christmas Vacation” quotes from Randy Quaid) many moons ago. As a matter of fact, I used it just yesterday… FACT!!! 😀

    Well played, CavKong!!!

    • mf13ss says:

A little over 10 years ago (when ‘Limewire’ was a thing, and for free), I’d burn DVRs of some of the funniest stuff I could find on Youtube. I made a compilation of ‘W-isms’ that went for well over half an hour. THIS ONE was one of my faves!

Another one was “Dan Marino and his dynamic wife”… I’ll see if I can find it!

    • Tim Knight says:

LOL, he wasn’t sure who gets fooled again. Come on George The Who sad it loudly. LOL

  11. mf13ss says:

Here it is! Cue it up to 2:17 mark on this video, where GWB is talking about our UNDEFEATED ’72 Miami Dolphins and Dan Marino… LOL

This is the artwork of Frank Frazetta, and it’s the very thing that compelled George Lucas to put Carrie Fisher (RIP) into the Princess Leia ‘slave outfit’ back in 1983.

all i want for christmas is a WIN IN MINNESOTA!

can you help me with that Santa?

  14. ocalarob says:

i remember those games in minnesota in december with injun joe kapp at qb, carl eller…alan page…jim marshall..paul krause…sub zero temps, looking down the line as the players exhaled white smoke, sure glad they have a dome now.

  15. ocalarob says:

i remember the 1969 NFC championship game Rams vs Minnesota @ Minnesota, i think the Rams started that season 11-0…

    M13,
Frazetta’s main Death Dealer painting is a choice I’ve had for a tattoo for years. I love his art.

  17. Randy says:

    ORob,
It’s actually gonna be a beautiful weekend here. We finally have some sunshine, and it’s gonna be in the mid to upper 30s. Frickin’ speedo weather.

  18. BailBondMike says:

Stanger, Did not know you are going to South Africa. Make sure you go cage diving with Great Whites. When I was there for a couple days I chose to go golfing on the course where they played the South African Masters instead. A big regret of mine after seeing the pics other people brought back to the ship.

    • stangerx says:

Thanks BBM. That sounds awesome but might be a bit tricky given that wife doesn’t even snorkel (and yeah we’ve tried). Maybe they have some kind of glass bottom boat option…. more our style. Would be a real jerk to insist on doing something she can’t.

  19. Ken says:

I am now envisioning what Randy looks like in a Speedo. I think my day is ruined

  20. Randy says:

    stanger,
From all I’ve heard their new stadium is pretty sweet. I always preferred playing when it was cold out. It always felt like it invigorated you. Once it got below about 10-20 degrees it was just miserable though. It hurts to breath and to hit.

    • stangerx says:

Low 60s was always the perfect temp for me. Too cold wasn’t about too cold (run enough and you are warm). Hated hitting frozen ground… like concrete.

  21. Ken says:

    Enjoy South Africa Stanger

    • stangerx says:

Thanks — would not have been my pick…..but after all is over will have more memories than the lazy ass vacation I would have chosen.

  22. BailBondMike says:

Stanger, if she does not want to do that, sand boarding was real popular there (it was back in 2001). LOL A safari would be cool but many of them were overnight trips back then and we could not have overnight liberty off the ship since it was right after 9-11. They do have a huge mall in Cape Town. We shopped for 3 hours and didn’t go through the whole mall. She might enjoy that, you not so much. LOL

    • stangerx says:

And from your comment before was thinking you visited on a cruise ship and chose the wrong on shore trip. Phin Dog was on boats as well.

We’ll be in Cape Town. Cool place? And no reason to talk about the mall…. that part will be figured out. Walk around safe kinda town?

  23. stangerx says:

Interesting look inside the locker room from Omar in an article about James. Sounds like Tunsil is a leader.
    ——————————–
“the offensive linemen have barricaded their area of the locker room off with ropes typically used for VIP sections. All season, permission has had to be granted for anyone under 300 pounds to enter. Permission to talk to James has been granted by his makeshift agent, Dolphins left tackle Laremy Tunsil, who usually listens in on every James interview.

Tunsil routinely vetoes questions, and has a habit of adding his own two cents on topics, defending James.”

    Full and worth the read:
    https://www.sun-sentinel.com/sports/miami-dolphins/fl-sp-dolphins-jawuan-james-20181214-story.html

    • New Age says:

This is my main problem with this team. Our leadership has no clue which way they will go on players until it’s expensive or they are used up. Five years in…we should have an idea of James’s worth and should have already tried to either sign a deal, or look for his replacement. We’ve had lots of talent move on because we waited until the price became prohibitive…and then had to hope for acceptable play from an unknown. We’ve also had to pay excessive prices to keep certain players. Neither solution is optimal to keep a stable of better talent.

      • Tim Knight says:

We actually re-signed a few guys before they hit FA – Jones, Alonso, McDonald and McCain. Who did we lose that were so good and we wanted to keep?

We let Stills test the market but still re-signed him at a decent rate and he took less to stay in Miami.

I think the team may have concerns about James’ durability and his price. Maybe they are looking to move on. But he’s just one guy.

I cannot believe that yesterday was the first time I’ve discovered Frazetta’s art… he’s VERY good! And good choice on his “Death Dealer” for a tattoo.

His art is so very colorful, very meaningful, and… apocalyptic. I really like it!

I’ve got several works by Salvador Dali and Michael Parkes framed in my house: I’ll now be adding Frazetta’s work.

This one by Dali is one of my faves, hanging in my living room…

    • Tim Knight says:

Love Dali’s art. When I was in art class in HS I did some stuff in his style. Not on his level but I tried to use his style with some projects.

  25. Seriously. I know people on here don’t like negativity but at 7-6 tell me exactly what is so different about this season that anyone should be more positive than seasons past where this team was having a similar season?

  26. Mike E. says:

Fuck man, we have a shot to make the playoffs. If we keep winning, there would be no reason to ask your question, or for any of us to have to answer it. We’re all just hoping maybe there’s some magic. We’ve played well enough to be in the mix, and hopefully we can keep it going.

  27. ElephantRider says:

Wheres all the Eagles talk? Hmmm….bandwagon

    • Tim Knight says:

Injuries happen. But with some guys that doesn’t matter.

      • ElephantRider says:

Look what they’re doing with what is out there. Even the beat writers are coming around to it.

Yes….. we all want new QBs brought in…. save it.

        What’s RT17s home record under Gase? 10-1

  28. Randy says:

    ER,
Unfortunately, this team’s record on the road is terrible….and if we do make the playoffs that’s where we’ll be playing. A win on the road in a very difficult environment would be a nice start to turning that around tomorrow.

I can appreciate that, man. The drawing/painting gene wasn’t passed on to me (it was for my brother, though), thus my ‘canvas’ is music/poetry. Pretty cool that you delved into artwork… probably explains why you’re successful in what you do! 🙂

Yessir… Dali’s art is something to behold!

    • Tim Knight says:

Ha… what’s weird is friends of mine went onto schools like the School of Visual Arts and Parsons. I got into it years later when it became desktop publishing. I learned on my own and got a chance through agency experience. Not as a pure artist, I had the vision and learned the software.

I truly respect great art on all levels.

  30. manitobafinfan says:

The Franzetta picture reminds me of Molly Hatchet album covers… they had awesome artwork on theirs .. the two you guys put up are awesomely Kewl…

  31. manitobafinfan says:

As for Football, I was half tempted to go this weekend but was way too busy at work and Uber tired .. couple that with they are 0-2 when I attend this year I will stay home ..
winning out is a very good possibility for us . Vikes D played well last weeken but not overly intimidating, their OL May be in worse shape than ours .. they do have a lot of talent on Offensive side , but as some have said get some early pressure on Cousins and he can and will fold like Sons Tent on a windy day … Jags ? Not worried .. Bills always a tough win but very doable… other than that we will still need some other games to fall our way to get in … then who knows .. gonna be fun especially with a W this weekend

  32. manitobafinfan says:

OD no we will not be hospitable hosts to the Bolts this weekend.. should be a Hell(ebuyck) of a game ..🏒🥅

  33. ElephantRider says:

    Randy

    Much agreed!

  34. People need to grow up with the “anti-fan” and “real fan” shit. It’s childish.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

We’re all old we’re never growing up. Enjoy the ride, it might end today – it might end in six weeks.

      • But that’s my point. What ride? At this point we’re on the outside looking in. It would be different if we had 10 wins now but a lot has to happen for this team to make the playoffs. If we controlled our own destiny it would be different. This is just another Sporano/Philbin-like performance.

  35. son of a son of a shula says:

Go Ryan Tannehill keep slinging it!

  36. naplesfan2010 says:

Huge fan of Salvador Dali here.
Have been to the Dali Art Museum in St Pete Fl a bunch.
A nice big collection and a few years ago, they rebuilt the structure itself,
so that now it too is in the same style as his own work.
Yann Weymouth designed the building; he had helped IM Pei with the Louvre project.

  38. Rockphin says:

    IT’S GAME DAY BITCHES!

    GO DOLPHINS!!!!

  39. naplesfan2010 says:

We have approximately the 10th best record in the NFL this year.
Given all the injuries, I’d say a top ten finish would please me.
If we win out (which could happen), I’d say the year was a resounding success,
no matter how we fare in the playoffs.
If we lose our last 3 (which could happen) I’d say we had a Philbin like fade,
but it would be a better record than last year with lots of new young stars on the rise.

And we beat the patsies* again.

That right there makes the season not a total loss.

  40. naplesfan2010 says:

We need to knock Cousins around early,
and we need to move the ball down the field early.
But this team has proven it can win late.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

We have a better record than the Vikings. We beat the patsies, and they did not.

  42. pheloniusphish says:

BLL – Miami may be on the outside looking in, but at least they’re on their feet and fighting. You have already quit, laid down and waiting for the death stroke. Must be a tough way to go through life.

  50. Randy says:

I’ve said this before. I think there’s a difference between enjoying the success of the moment and your evaluation of the team’s status or progress. You can be enjoying the ride while still thinking we are not a great team. They’re not mutually exclusive.
    ***
I don’t believe we are a serious playoff sort of team, but we have a chance to get in and get lucky. I am enjoying our limited success, but it doesn’t change my opinion of the issues this team has. With that, I can’t judge other fans who say: “Been there. Done that.” I get it, but I’m still enjoying what success we have had. There’s always a chance…til there’s not. Lol
    ***
I’ve never been a rah-rah sort of person, so I get bored with that quick. I’d rather discuss issues on the team and how to get better. I understand that not every fan is like that. I’ve always been more of a football fan than a dolphins fan. Telling someone how to be a fan is like telling the wind not to blow.

  51. ocalarob says:

with the few changes made last off season this team has gotten better, i like the speed added to the roster and how much more talent will be added this offseason? can we stay healthy? it would appear we are going in the right direction what ever happens this year.

  52. olddolphan says:

HEADLINE of a front page article published today by the TAMPA BAY TIMES: “GLAZERS, OWN UP TO FAILING FRANCHISE.” Authored by Martin Fennelly, this column lists the failure of Bucs owners (the Glazer family) to find winning coaches and GMs who can lead this team to success in the NFL. Fennelly observes there are plenty of good people out there who could be hire, but, “a lot of us don’t trust Bucs ownership to find them.” (Where have I heard THAT before?)

Fennelly asks “where have they gone right since dismissing John Gruden after the 2009 season? Coaches have been axed. GMs have vanished. The Glazers are the one constant, and the constant is 55-102 since the start of the 2009 season. Breaking News: owners rarely fire themselves.” In Fennelly’s opinion, “A football team has lost its football town.” Indeed, the Tampa Bay franchise is the only NFL franchise I know that has lost 10 or more games for 10 consecutive years. No wonder so many local fans have totally given up on this franchise!

To their credit, the Glazers have spent hundreds of millions of dollars upgrading Raymond James Stadium (as have local taxpayers who foot a big portion of the upgrades). But, as Dolphins original owner Joe Robbie found out, fans are much more interested in A WINNING TEAM than they are in glitzy, state-of-the-art, stadiums. Throw in 16 beers and $40 per game parking fees and, all of a sudden, going to a Bucs game to see your boys lose doesn’t seem like such a good idea. (PS: That should read $16 beers.)

HOPEFULLY, the Ross-owned Dolphins will NEVER sink to the level of the Glazers and their poor relationship with Tampa Bay fans.
    ————————-
ABOUT OUR DOLPHINS: The Vikings are a team in disarray. They fired their OC. Their head coaches’ job is in jeopardy. And their fans are furious! If Cousins gets off to a bad start the boo-birds will be noisy and numerous. It’s up to Miami to come-out smokin’!! Stuff Dalvin Cook for little or no gain. Disrupt Minnesota’s pass patterns. Get in Kirk Cousin’s FACE!! And DON’T commit any stupid penalties.

The longer the Dolphins stay close, the more nervous the heavily favored Vikes will be. If Miami is within 3 points of Minnesota at the start of the fourth quarter, THEY WILL WIN THIS GAME!!

Historically, Ryan Tannehill has not played well in road games. This would be the perfect time to reverse that trend.

I’ll take the 7 and 1/2 point spread. Miami WINS 26-23 in OVERTIME!!

    • stangerx says:

Hope you are right — but hard to tell with an underperforming team like the Vikes. Could fold or could come out to prove they are the team they were supposed to be.

  53. Mike E. says:

Gotta say, it drives me crazy how so many people spell Coach Tony’s name incorrectly. Tony Sparano. Thanks . . .

  54. Randy says:

    OD,
I agree that if we can keep it close early, the Vikes may wilt. Their offense doesn’t have much confidence right now. But, I think it has to be low scoring. I don’t think we beat these guys in a shoot out. Their defense is just too good. But, shit happens, so you never know! Lol

  55. Mike E. says:

Tell you this, I was listening to Kirwan and Miller, and Kirwan knows Stefanski well. He was saying he’s an extremely intelligent football mind, and proof of that is that he’s been retained by 3 different HC’s, He’s been with the Vikes since ’06. Kirwan was also saying Stefanski will have a legit shot at the HC job for the Vikes, or if not the Vikes, another NFL team. Originally I thought this was just a sacrificial move for Minny, but Stefanski is not just a placeholder, he’s very qualified. Hopefully he has a rocky start! 🙂

  56. Mike E. says:

What scares me most about the Vikes is their pass rush. We have to neutralize Hunter w/o letting someone else destroy us. We were able to neutralize Mack, so if Gase can figure out a similar plan, and we can execute it, we should be in this one.

  63. herdfan says:

No, I have no answer to where the blog stops when you post a comment. I’ve tried to figure it out, no luck. I’ve said it before, if there was one thing I could change, this would be it. I’ll check the user forum, maybe someone else has had this same issue and has posted the solution. I find it hard to believe we’re the only one. I think I’ve tried this before but maybe since the last time some smart person has figured it out.

    • Mike E. says:

I’m not smart, so I’m out! I think Jeff would have my vote as the one most likely to have an answer, or a remedy, but I got nothing. Herd, most blogs don’t get as many responses as ours do, especially when they are open for a few days like our are. Our blog is definitely more interactive than most blogs out there.

      • herdfan says:

I posted the question on the wordpress.com tech support site. Hopefully they will answer. Of course now I’m going to have to remember what the email password is for the blog’s email account. I do well to remember my own.

      • Mike E. says:

People are usually pretty good answering those, so hopefully we get a tech wizard who has a solution for us.

  64. Mike E. says:

Herd – At work, I have to log into at least 10 different programs , and each and every one has a different password. It scares the hell out of me that I’m going to go on vacation, come back, and forget or mix up all the passwords and not be able to do my job.

    • herdfan says:

Yep, I’ve got about 25, all with different specifications. I finally put a password keeper thing on my computer to store all those in and I’m pretty good about keeping them updated. My personal ones, not so much.

  70. naplesfan2010 says:

  71. manitobafinfan says:

    Miley !!

  72. Randy says:

Cannot get down to this defense.

  73. stangerx says:

Thought the Vikes OL was bad……. but hey we beat the Pats.

  78. naplesfan2010 says:

why can’t we get plays like that for Drake and Parker?

  79. rich0322 says:

We are such a different team on the road. Doesn’t look good with 2 of our last 3 away.

  80. naplesfan2010 says:

mcclain has made several serious errors already.

  81. naplesfan2010 says:

    no one blocked Barr.

  82. manitobafinfan says:

That was a nice play by Tanny despite Butler being OB

  83. stangerx says:

Haack has 100 friends and families at the game…. punters don’t paid enough to sport that.

  84. naplesfan2010 says:

I think we can throw on these guys if we can just get in synch before they are 50 points ahead.

  85. Randy says:

    stanger,

  92. herdfan says:

    Well this didn’t take long.

  93. naplesfan2010 says:

why does it seem like we have only one guy to make each play?
    Where is everybody else?

  94. Mike E. says:

Getting the impression that Fitz is getting exposed as a CB. Nothing terrible with that really, he might just have to work more there, or just play him more at safety. Last week he struggled too

  95. stangerx says:

I sorta like once we are in situations like this (once already in them at least). Gonna go balls out and you get to see who actually cares.
