2018 Season – Game 15 – Jaguars @ Dolphins

2 more games to go, but now the Dolphins will just play these games with no pressure, no worry, because the playoffs have slipped away. I’m not even angry, I think the team mustered what they could with a depleted lineup, and there was no crushing, disappointing loss to an inferior team at the end like losing to the Bills or the Jets with the playoffs right in our grasp. This season we traveled to Minnesota to play the Vikings, and while the Vikings aren’t a juggernaut, they were at least healthier than we were. I thought we had a shot if we had CB Xavien Howard healthy, but he was unable to play, which made me doubt our chances. Rightfully so.

Minkah Fitzpatrick was forced into much more corner duty than usual due to the Howard injury, and although he had a pick 6, he’s still learning and is definitely taking his lumps too. The Vikes have 2 excellent receivers in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, and both schooled him during the game. Nothing wrong with that, Minkah really didn’t play a lot at CB at Bama, and he’s played sparingly on the boundary here in MIA. Expecting him to cover either of those guys all day is a lot to ask.

Now that RB Frank Gore is done for the season, the Dolphins can take a better look at Kalen Ballage, and maybe Kenyan Drake will get more touches too. I still feel like Drake is underused, and has been all season. I think it’s also possible that our Pro Bowl corner, Xavien Howard might be done, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer will get their chance to make some hay, or on the negative side, make it obvious we need to draft more CB’s.

Although we will probably end up either .500, or below .500, I’m at peace with it. Too many injuries, and just not enough talent to make up for it. I still think we should make QB a priority next season. It doesn’t mean we have to take one with our 1st pick, but if the right guy is there, go get him. There are a number of needs, obviously the O-line is a need, but we can’t draft 2 OG’s and an OC all in one draft. We’re going to have to once again acquire more O-line in FA, and we have a huge decision with Ja’Wuan James. I’d prefer to sign James. James has missed time every other year, and if the pattern continues, it will happen next year, but I don’t want to lose him. I don’t believe in the pattern, and I also don’t think you should let your good players that you draft go.

We need defense next year. Crazy to think that young 6th RD draft pick Vincent Taylor was our best DT. When he was injured, things really went south, but the late FA pick ups starting coming around (Ziggy Hood, Sylvester Williams), but neither are signed through next year. That leaves us thin and in need on the D-line, with Godchaux, Spence and Taylor. We also scooped up DT Kendrick Norton from the Panthers PS, so he will get a look in the next 2 games as well. Norton is a big run stuffing DT, but doesn’t offer a lot as far as pass rush abilities. Still, watching the Dolphins get gashed all season by opposing teams run games, sounds like Norton is just what the doctor ordered, although temper that somewhat, as Norton was a 7th RD pick still on someones practice squad.

We have some tough decisions on DE. I love Cam Wake, but he needs to simply be a role player, not a starting DE at this point of his career. He would probably more effective as a pass rusher in a part time role at his age. Robert Quinn is due nearly $13M. No way is he worth that, but dammit, we have no depth there, and Charles Harris is still freaking M.I.A. I could see Quinn gone, and maybe they just throw Harris in as the starter on one side and draft another DE early for the other side. Wake in part time duty, and possibly a re-sign of William Hayes.

I’m happy to be not angry at our team for a change, but I think changes are coming. Gase has earned another year at a minimum, and although Ryan Tannehill did his best, and he will most likely be back next season, his replacement must be found. He’s a gamer, and a warrior, but he’s not special. Find special. The best NFL teams have Special, and the others keep looking for it. We need to identify and find Special, or our team never will be. Whether it’s Herbert, Lock, Haskins, Grier or Finley, find him. We don’t have to take a QB in the 1st RD, maybe Special is in the 2nd or 3rd RD, it’s possible. Try and find it.

In the next 2 games, I want to see Kendrick Norton, Kalen Ballage, Kenyan Drake, Brice Butler, Isaiah Ford, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer. Heck, let’s take a look at David Fales too, why not? How about with 2 games left, put Charles Harris in as the starter. Just do it, see if the kid shows a little something, prime him for next season. I’m not angry with the team, but Harris and his lack of production/playing time makes me angry. Get him in there!

Alright now I have to get ready to host my family. Time to start drinking heavily

  2. Mike E. says:

I’ve heard Flacco to Miami. That makes me nauseous as well.

  3. BailBondMike says:

Ok, headed to next county to arrest someone. They are already in jail on new charges but have to take a surrender form to the jail to cancel the bonds I have on them. It’s like an arrest cause they will have to be booked in on the charges I have them out on bond.

BBL to talk about our next regime and draft. SMMFH

  4. Randy says:

    MikeE,
Not sure why Flacco would consider coming to this shit show for a second.

  5. New Age says:

Just to put it in perspective. In the last 55 minutes of this game, we have scored zero points, had 61 total yards of offense, and have been outscored by a 4-10 team by 17 points. None of this is a typo. It’s all real and I unfortunately watched most of it. I haven’t seen such an inept group of players and coaches since our last one was fired….

  6. Randy says:

    Ken,
I agree. But, Ross would give him 10 years to turn it around! Lol

  7. D says:

Yeah flacco is only a slight upgrade over Tanny. Better QB but he has a shitty Cutler like attitude

  8. Mike E. says:

Gase also continues to under use Drake. I can’t understand what’s up with that.

  9. D says:

Colts are about to win too. Doubly eliminated lol

  10. mf13ss says:

Uneducated guess here, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Gase if fired before the end of today.

  11. Randy says:

Time to go take a shower and wash this stench from my nose.
    ***
    Merry Christmas everyone!

  12. We need better FO to even think of turning this shitshow around, Tannenbaum is a complete moron

  13. mf13ss says:

  14. Randy says:

    MikeE,
If you’re an aging QB who’s completely immobile, would you sign on to play for a team with a crap OL where you’ll get hit constantly……possibly a brand new coach and/or FO….and absolutely no reason that they are going to have success in the next few years? I don’t think he wants to play that bad. But hey…you never know.

  15. naplesfan2010 says:

There are so many different things wrong with this team that it is pointless to list them all.
    We do have team speed.

We are just not a cohesive unit. We aren’t a team in the sense of putting together a concerted effort.
We don’t threaten other teams offenses or stretch their defenses.

  16. Mike E. says:

Realistically, our team doesn’t belong in the same sentence as the Colts and Ravens. They are legitimate teams. We’re a sideshow act. Colts deserve it, and the ravens deserve it for coming up big when they needed to win. I didn’t really consider this game a must win because our chances were slim, but the team still has to fight for that chance, and they were awful in doing so.

  17. naplesfan2010 says:

It’s like what Gase does with his “game plan” purposely messes up the rhythm of his offense.

  18. mf13ss says:

  19. naplesfan2010 says:

    DeShaun is da bomb.

  20. mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

Did you watch the Star Wars fan film I posted yesterday?!!

  21. CavalierKong says:

    Terrible football.

  22. mf13ss says:

    Mike E,

    Here ya go!

  23. CavalierKong says:

My favorite bonehead moment of the day was us trying to quick snap after the fumble, but in typical genius Dolphins fashion we substitute on offense, so it gave the Jags extra time to substitute as well, see the play, and throw the challenge flag. Ultimately it did’t matter, but it’s another example of bad situational football. Burn it down.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

      You are right.
      But
      to me
this is a perfect example of why Gase needs to off load the play calling.
The play caller guy (call him something like offensive coordinator) would work on that while the other guy (sorta like a head coach) would be managing the game, red flags, time outs, personnel evals, etc. etc.

      • CavalierKong says:

LOL, I agree. I’d like to see a real OC with actual playcalling duties in here next year, or whole new coaching staff (keep Rizzi of course).

  24. mf13ss says:

    • naplesfan2010 says:

That is depressing, but it is irrelevant.

What matters is what the current employees are doing.

No one can fix the past.
The present is what must be evaluated,
and the future is what must be planned.

  25. naplesfan2010 says:

    Cincy lost to the Browns.

  26. Mike E. says:

M – That was well done. Very cool

    • mf13ss says:

I LOVE it! And that but part 1 of what is supposed to be a 4 or 5 part series. And if you didn’t get the gist what with the purple lightsaber light and references… Mace Mindu is still alive in this!

  27. Mike E. says:

Randy – If you’re an aging QB, you go to whatever team offers you the most money. I pray it isn’t us.

  28. Mike E. says:

If Gase isn’t calling the plays, what’s his purpose here? He has nothing to do with the defense, so if he’s no longer involved in the offense, he’s a goners. That’s fine, but we have to have a plan, we can’t just get rid of him without having a clear plan as to where we’re going.

  29. naplesfan2010 says:

I would only keep Gase as HC if he agreed to fire Burke and hire a legitimate OC and let him call plays.

  30. naplesfan2010 says:

That was a stupid play call by the Saints.

  31. mf13ss says:

  32. naplesfan2010 says:

    I would fire Tanenbaum.
For drafting Harris and mismanaging Gase.

  33. naplesfan2010 says:

I love Cam Wake’s fashion sense.

  34. Mike E. says:

Naples – I guess what I’m asking is, what qualifications does Adam Gase have other than the fact that he’s supposed to be a QB whisperer and a great offensive minded coach? If he’s not involved in the offense, what can he do here? He clearly has personnel issues, so why would he be here? His team has had no discipline, so again, why?

    • naplesfan2010 says:

Oh I agree with all that.
I think if he would just run the team and inspire the team and design a freaky offense that would have hard to defend play mixes, then he could be a good HC.

then let someone else be sitting in a corner drawing circles and arrows and signalling/talking to the QB.

  35. naplesfan2010 says:

This season’s injury list has been very tough to overcome, I will agree to that, but the combination of chaos and wussiness on offense is unacceptable.

If you want to be Air Coryell fine, or if you want to be “Mr. play it safe” fine, but you can’t use the worst of both styles.

  36. Mike E. says:

Naples – I just think his playcalling is a reflection of what he wants to be on offense. What scares me is I understand he may not have the personnel at the moment to achieve that, but the fact that he doesn’t adjust the game plan when it’s not working scares the heck out of me. He never seems to make adjustments. I wouldn’t be crushed if he comes back next season, but he has to show growth in that regard to get more than just next season.

  37. naplesfan2010 says:

To me it’s the Peter Principle three times in a row. Sparano, bless his soul, Philbin, and Gase.
The last two showed the one trait i hate most in people besides stuff like racism.

And that is stubbornness. Holding on to what they believe in the face of evidence to the contrary.

Gase refuses to adjust, because that would seem to him to show weakness.
A great coach puts forth whatever wins with the strengths of the personnel he has, not saying “this is it guys, if you can’t run these plays my way, then we lose.”

    jests blew their game

  40. olddolphan says:

KEN: Your references to “this shit show” are too kind. THIS was a 4-12 team masquerading as a 7-9 team. 29th in both offense and defense coming into this game, and those numbers were NOT helped today. This franchise is worse than shit from Ross down to the ticket department. It is deplorable!!
    ——————-
PONDER THIS: IF you were a coach on the rise, would YOU accept a job where Steve Ross is your boss?? –FUCK NO!!! The Dolphins are the LAST PLACE I’d work BECAUSE YOU CAN NOT WIN as long as Ross is calling the shits, —er, SHOTS!

    SHIT ATTRACTS MORE SHIT!!!

    http://www.espn.com/blog/nflnation/post/_/id/290355/the-secret-to-turnarounds-for-bears-colts-the-right-coaching-staffs Reposting this.

Gase has not shown the ability to be a great OC or HC. He has solid credentials as a coach overall but was only an OC for 3 years. That’s not an absolute for success but I really wish we’d do like these teams did. There’s a plan, there are good coaches involved that aren’t your buddies, and they are successful. Gase either couldn;t sell his vision to the right guys or didn;t know the right guys.

  43. BailBondMike says:

    Wyoming, not bad!

  44. herdfan says:

I’m probably the only one who thinks this but I didn’t think Sparano was that bad. He took over a team that was 1-15. There weren’t a lot of great players on that team, some good ones, but most would have been, or were, cut from other teams. He found a way to get the best ones on the field and use them as effectively as possible. That’s a good coach in my book. From all reports the players played hard for him. I didn’t see that with Philbin and I don’t think Gase has a clue what to do and I think the good players on the team know it the same as most of us do.

    Sigh….

    • olddolphan says:

YOU are a sweet, well motivated fan, young lady. But the sad truth is Sparano was fired more than once and failed to produce a playoff contender at any stop he made. However, he truly was a good guy. And, in many ways, that’s more important in the long run.

  45. olddolphan says:

THE VERY FIRST THING Miami’s new GM and HC need to address is the sad state of the O-Line and the D-Line. Some around here and in the FO thought things were OK and that little needed to be done. Well the folks who believe that in Davie ARE ABOUT TO BE FIRED–AND soon!. If Miami can’t figure out a way to draft QB GRIER from West Virginia (my personal preference) they then should focus on the best O-Lineman or D-Lineman available in Rounds 1 and 2. But, in my dream of dreams, we take Grier Round 1, then O-Line in 2 and D-Line in round 3. OR, we could bring back Ireland and use all 3 picks on a complete BUST!!!

    • olddolphan says:

I’ll be out of here for awhile. Me and Mrs. OD are headed for a special place. When we return, we can discuss that $50 a certain person owes me.

Can’t believe I got a “B” for Julian Love in the 2nd. He’s the #2 CB on NFL Draft Scout.

    Your Picks:
Round 1 Pick 16: Allen, Josh, OLB, Kentucky (A+)
Round 2 Pick 16: Love, Julian, CB, Notre Dame (B)
Round 3 Pick 15: McGovern, Connor, C, Penn State (A+)
Round 4 Pick 16: Hyatt, Mitch, OT, Clemson (A+)
Round 5 Pick 16: Willis III, Gerald, DT, Miami (FL) (A+)
Round 6 Pick 16: Dillard, Andre, OT, Washington State (A+)
Round 7 Pick 15: Alaka, Otaro, ILB, Texas AM (A+)

  47. mf13ss says:

  48. mf13ss says:

    Mike Tannenbaum MUST GO.

    • D says:

Only one I know for sure has to go is Tanny. I’m with Mando on that. If I were Ross, Gase and his crew would have to win me over with their plan for righting the ship or they also would be gone. Tbaum and Grier have made some good selections in the past, but not going for it at QB this past year really bothers me. I love minkah, but they showed no balls going for a QB when we really needed one. They are on the most stable ground with me but that’s not saying much at this point.

  49. mf13ss says:

Tannehill doesn’t even know what a TE is/does. By my count and including today, he’s completed a mere 32 passes to TEs this season. And if you’ve noticed like I have, most of his attempts to TEs are scripted within the first drive or two of 1st quarters. THIS IS PROBLEMATIC, and Gase knows it… hence the scripted plays to TEs so early.

    • D says:

He doesn’t know what an outlet receiver is for period. He doesn’t understand how to properly go through a read progression either.

  50. Mike E. says:

Herd – I think Tony was better relating to his players, and having the players behind him than anyone that has been here since. I just don’t think he had the NFL chops in the strategy and game management skills. He really struggled in those departments.

    • D says:

Yeah he wasnt a good game planner or manager. I think his place would have been best served in an assistant HC capacity. He would be good for a team to have around and in a pinch I think he could rally the troops but he be best in a advisor to the HC type role to help him relate to the team

      • D says:

He wasn’t cut out to be a HC I liked the man but he couldn’t sustain success. I still don’t know why Ireland got to stay when Tony got the axe though. That was a waste of a year firing one then the other instead of both at the same time

  51. mf13ss says:

Gase has totally mismanaged this Offensive roster, with too many statistical anomalies to even begin listing.

    • D says:

We walked right down the field with a combination of running the ball and passes to the RBs. He didn’t even wait until that stopped working before he bailed on it. That is inexplicable.

  52. mf13ss says:

Our Offense can’t lean on our Defense, and our Defense can’t lean on our Offense. That’s a terrible combination.

  53. mf13ss says:

I don’t want it to sound like I’m throwing Tannehill under the bus, but he just doesn’t have ‘IT’. He certainly does NOT suck, but he can’t seem to put our team on his back. Like Armando and D above, I’m ready to move on from him.

    • mf13ss says:

As of right here and right now (many more dominoes will fall before it’s all said and done), I’d be targeting Teddy Bridgewater via FA to be our QB next year. My strategy would include going for one of the BIG QBs coming out in the 2020 Draft.

What could we get in exchange for trading Tannehill?

  54. herdfan says:

    Mike and D:

I don’t know about that and no one ever will. I’m looking at what he did with very little big time talent and as a rookie head coach. A world of difference than what we get with Gase with better talent, except for QB of course! 😉

  55. Mike E. says:

You know M – At this point I’m probably not bringing in a solid veteran. Draft a QB, and bring that QB along quickly, let Tannehill start, and if we lose some, no worries. We need to take some lumps and maybe even get a top 10 or even a top 5 pick. Let’s try to build a team rather than keep reaching for quick fixes. That’s just how I feel now. That might change

  56. herdfan says:

I honestly don’t want Tannehill around ‘mentoring’ a QB we draft.

    Just NO.

  57. mf13ss says:

Know what poetic justice would be? We trade Mike Tannenbaum on Draft day!

  58. Randy says:

We should have just stuck with Osweiler. We’d be drafting in the top 5! Lol

  59. mf13ss says:

    Off the cuff, frustration notes…

QB: Trade Tannehill, find a stop-gap until the ’20 Draft
    O-Line: find a starting T/G
WR: almost ready to trade DeVante, Brice Butler looking good

D-Line: find a starting DE, find an artery-clogging DT
DB: find a starting CB opposite Xavien (sorry, but Cordrea isn’t working)

  60. D says:

I’m drafting a QB in this draft and probably the next if I didn’t really feel like I hit with one next year. I don’t think we can wait until 2020 to start this process. I do t want to overdraft but I think we have candidates next year capable of being starting QBs in the NFL and if we don’t start reaching for one we are just dragging out the process. I don’t understand how continuing to wait makes any sense.

    • mf13ss says:

I understand where you’re coming from, truly. But if we land Teddy, that may preclude us from having to go QB early in the ’19 Draft. Teddy should be 110% now, having sat and learning behind Drew Brees.

    • New Age says:

      D,

That’s how I feel. I remember most people here and draft experts not liking Baker. He’s by far the best QB of this draft though so far. Mahomes was picked at #10, Wilson, 3rd round, Rodgers late in the first. Hell, Jackson was #32 and he is personally helping to carry a team that had zero chance at making the playoffs before he started playing.

We need a better set of evaluators than what we have and I see Ross holding a grudge with this staff for not drafting a QB. Ross had a better plan than his ‘football’ people and that’s a very quick way for someone to become unemployed.

  61. manitobafinfan says:

Congrats to ER for winning the FMU FFB championship in a Blowout Victory over Mrs Toba …

  62. Tim Knight says:

I won my FF Championship game again. Just listen to what I say. LOL

  63. Tim Knight says:

So Drake and his production didn’t happen because of Gase? 😉

  64. ocalarob says:

Maybe we could get Nick Foles ???

  65. ocalarob says:

    Maybe get Jay Cutler back

  66. ocalarob says:

at this point we’ll be picking 15, there’s no way we could pick higher than 16 or lower than 11 pending next weeks outcome

  67. ocalarob says:

It’s amazing with Tannehills strong arm and athletic ability that he isn’t better than he is, maybe he just had a bad game but i tend to think there’s something missing between his ears.
he has absolutely no awareness of his surroundings,

maybe it’s Gase, where’s his dump off, you have to have a safety valve when you are in the pocket and you have to know where that man is.

why don’t they have a controlled roll out in the passing game to buy time for his rec’s and if no one is open just throw it out of bounds being outside the tackles.

he just sits back there like he’s having a cup of coffee.

he should have a clock in his head, he has to get rid of the ball in 2.8 secs
No OL can hold off pressure for as long as he holds the ball.

  68. ocalarob says:

i don’t see us winning next week in Buffalo but hey look at the bright side; we are 1 game better than we were last year!

  69. ocalarob says:

it’s rather odd that Tannenbaum was attending Oregon and WV games back in OCT, was he scouting Grier and Hebart???
Have they made the decision already to draft the QB of the future?

  70. ocalarob says:

    Where’s Jim Harbaugh????

  71. Tannehill should have never gotten a huge contract, he never earned it, and is a big part of the problem Fins aren’t winning.
He will make over 26 million next year, to help us lose 8-9 more games.
Now this is where I want to get cheap.
We pay a below average injured QB all that money, and he does very little for us.
He missed a year and a half, and his return isn’t what we need either.

Tannenbaum destroyed this team, sending minimum wage never injured record setting pro bowlers
Down the road, and give Gimpyhill can’t win a game or stay healthy the vault .
Gimpyhill is horrible in the pocket, I think I could sack his pitiful ass. Why in the hell we hung into that loser and didn’t draft a QB is the teams problem.
We see Ravens and other teams seem to be able to draft QB,s that are already better in their rookie and sophomore seasons than Gimpyhill is in his 7th season.
Tannenbaum is the one to thank for this debacle, and shitshow of personnel moves.

And Ross gets the blame for bringing in a damn NY jet guy to rebuild Miami.
Merry Christmas to all the bloggers, and lump of coal and fruitcake for the 2 Tanneys

  72. Miko Grimes can scout talent better than Tannenbaum,
Yea, she KNEW Tannehill was crap

  73. D says:

ORob that’s exactly what I think, I think what’s missing is between his ears and just having instincts for the position. He doesn’t seem like that’s a natural position fir him. When he runs, he looks natural. I feel that had he stayed a WR he might be one of the best right now, but he just isn’t and doesn’t have what it takes to be a QB.

  74. D says:

I understand why Tanny got his contract. I understand kinda sorta why he got the extension. He deserved the first one and completely didn’t the second one. The first one was just what you pay a QB that’s your franchise guy and that’s what he was for us at the time.

This last one was more of a product of desperate situation. We didn’t prepare to move on so we moved money around to keep his cap hit low that one year and screwed our ability to get out this year. They compounded the issue by not drafting a guy this year making it even tougher to move on next year.

We owe to ourselves to bite the bullet and stop that cycle. Draft a guy NEXT year.

  75. Mike E. says:

Yeah, pretty sure Tannehill was drafted by Ireland, BEFORE Tannenbaum got here, so . . . .

  76. D says:

Nick foles would be a permanent solution and he will get paid like a premium starter. I wouldn’t go that route. I’d really like a home grown guy, Hebert and Grier are two guys that could get it done. Daniel Jones, and Lock both are capable of being starters. I’m beginning to come around to that OSU guy but again I’m always skeptical of QBs from that school.

Dan looked like he was nauseous watching that offensive offense yesterday. Ross looked disgusted enough that he may finally blow it up the right way …total devastation ..Let none survive!

    That’s fuckin hilarious!
    Miko is an expert???????????

    Why even waste your time???????????

They opened up the game yesterday with maybe their best drive of the year and were a complete and utter embarrassment after. Plenty of blame to go around.

I have to agree with OD right now. Grier is considered safe no matter what so Ross is once again considering a half-assed solution. I think Grier has been ok so far but if you want a talented guy to take over…he must have the authority to hire and fire everyone. That’s why we continue to get guys like Tannenbaum , Silver Fox Hickey, etc running our team.

  81. CavalierKong says:

Tannenbaum means Christmas tree in German…so there’s that.

There is plenty of blame to go around. That’s what sucks. If it was just a Tanny or just one other position or guy, then it would be an easier fix. We have multiple issues. It’s not a quick fix by plugging in a guy or two. That’s why I think you should have a long range view in your picks. Nothing we do next year is going to somehow turn us into a viable playoff contender. Build for the future. I assume this is what every FO does most of the time anyway. We need better players…at several, unfortunately, key spots…QB, DE, CB for instance.

Its not nearly all Tanny’s fault, but he’s not the QB to take a flawed team on his back and win. The OL injuries hurt….especially because we really didn’t get to see our expected starting OL play together for long…so it’s still an unknown if they can be a good, functional OL. With the starters all back, they might be, but you can never count on all your guys staying healthy all year. Backups will play. It’s just a matter of how much. Are ours good enough?

I’m always a player issue over coach issue guy. We need better players. Yes, it’s possible we need better coaching too. I could see giving Gase one more year, but he needs to show improvement in some areas too. Where’s the discipline? Where’s the intensity on offense? I heard from media people up here in MN that watched us warm up prior to the MN game, and they said we looked listless and were completely flat. One guy, Paul Allen, said we looked as flat and uninterested in pregames as he has ever seen in his calling games in the NFL. That’s not good. Where’s the leadership?
