2 more games to go, but now the Dolphins will just play these games with no pressure, no worry, because the playoffs have slipped away. I’m not even angry, I think the team mustered what they could with a depleted lineup, and there was no crushing, disappointing loss to an inferior team at the end like losing to the Bills or the Jets with the playoffs right in our grasp. This season we traveled to Minnesota to play the Vikings, and while the Vikings aren’t a juggernaut, they were at least healthier than we were. I thought we had a shot if we had CB Xavien Howard healthy, but he was unable to play, which made me doubt our chances. Rightfully so.
Minkah Fitzpatrick was forced into much more corner duty than usual due to the Howard injury, and although he had a pick 6, he’s still learning and is definitely taking his lumps too. The Vikes have 2 excellent receivers in Adam Thielen and Stefon Diggs, and both schooled him during the game. Nothing wrong with that, Minkah really didn’t play a lot at CB at Bama, and he’s played sparingly on the boundary here in MIA. Expecting him to cover either of those guys all day is a lot to ask.
Now that RB Frank Gore is done for the season, the Dolphins can take a better look at Kalen Ballage, and maybe Kenyan Drake will get more touches too. I still feel like Drake is underused, and has been all season. I think it’s also possible that our Pro Bowl corner, Xavien Howard might be done, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer will get their chance to make some hay, or on the negative side, make it obvious we need to draft more CB’s.
Although we will probably end up either .500, or below .500, I’m at peace with it. Too many injuries, and just not enough talent to make up for it. I still think we should make QB a priority next season. It doesn’t mean we have to take one with our 1st pick, but if the right guy is there, go get him. There are a number of needs, obviously the O-line is a need, but we can’t draft 2 OG’s and an OC all in one draft. We’re going to have to once again acquire more O-line in FA, and we have a huge decision with Ja’Wuan James. I’d prefer to sign James. James has missed time every other year, and if the pattern continues, it will happen next year, but I don’t want to lose him. I don’t believe in the pattern, and I also don’t think you should let your good players that you draft go.
We need defense next year. Crazy to think that young 6th RD draft pick Vincent Taylor was our best DT. When he was injured, things really went south, but the late FA pick ups starting coming around (Ziggy Hood, Sylvester Williams), but neither are signed through next year. That leaves us thin and in need on the D-line, with Godchaux, Spence and Taylor. We also scooped up DT Kendrick Norton from the Panthers PS, so he will get a look in the next 2 games as well. Norton is a big run stuffing DT, but doesn’t offer a lot as far as pass rush abilities. Still, watching the Dolphins get gashed all season by opposing teams run games, sounds like Norton is just what the doctor ordered, although temper that somewhat, as Norton was a 7th RD pick still on someones practice squad.
We have some tough decisions on DE. I love Cam Wake, but he needs to simply be a role player, not a starting DE at this point of his career. He would probably more effective as a pass rusher in a part time role at his age. Robert Quinn is due nearly $13M. No way is he worth that, but dammit, we have no depth there, and Charles Harris is still freaking M.I.A. I could see Quinn gone, and maybe they just throw Harris in as the starter on one side and draft another DE early for the other side. Wake in part time duty, and possibly a re-sign of William Hayes.
I’m happy to be not angry at our team for a change, but I think changes are coming. Gase has earned another year at a minimum, and although Ryan Tannehill did his best, and he will most likely be back next season, his replacement must be found. He’s a gamer, and a warrior, but he’s not special. Find special. The best NFL teams have Special, and the others keep looking for it. We need to identify and find Special, or our team never will be. Whether it’s Herbert, Lock, Haskins, Grier or Finley, find him. We don’t have to take a QB in the 1st RD, maybe Special is in the 2nd or 3rd RD, it’s possible. Try and find it.
In the next 2 games, I want to see Kendrick Norton, Kalen Ballage, Kenyan Drake, Brice Butler, Isaiah Ford, Cornell Armstrong and Torry McTyer. Heck, let’s take a look at David Fales too, why not? How about with 2 games left, put Charles Harris in as the starter. Just do it, see if the kid shows a little something, prime him for next season. I’m not angry with the team, but Harris and his lack of production/playing time makes me angry. Get him in there!

If you’re an aging QB who’s completely immobile, would you sign on to play for a team with a crap OL where you’ll get hit constantly……possibly a brand new coach and/or FO….and absolutely no reason that they are going to have success in the next few years? I don’t think he wants to play that bad. But hey…you never know.
There are so many different things wrong with this team that it is pointless to list them all.
We do have team speed.
We are just not a cohesive unit. We aren’t a team in the sense of putting together a concerted effort.
We don’t threaten other teams offenses or stretch their defenses.
Realistically, our team doesn’t belong in the same sentence as the Colts and Ravens. They are legitimate teams. We’re a sideshow act. Colts deserve it, and the ravens deserve it for coming up big when they needed to win. I didn’t really consider this game a must win because our chances were slim, but the team still has to fight for that chance, and they were awful in doing so.
It’s like what Gase does with his “game plan” purposely messes up the rhythm of his offense.
so shouldn’t the coach be “teaching” him that, as in conveying “Here’s what we do in that scenario.”

My favorite bonehead moment of the day was us trying to quick snap after the fumble, but in typical genius Dolphins fashion we substitute on offense, so it gave the Jags extra time to substitute as well, see the play, and throw the challenge flag. Ultimately it did’t matter, but it’s another example of bad situational football. Burn it down.

What scares me is I understand he may not have the personnel at the moment to achieve that, but the fact that he doesn’t adjust the game plan when it’s not working scares the heck out of me. He never seems to make adjustments. I wouldn’t be crushed if he comes back next season, but he has to show growth in that regard to get more than just next season.

Gase has not shown the ability to be a great OC or HC. He has solid credentials as a coach overall but was only an OC for 3 years. That’s not an absolute for success but I really wish we’d do like these teams did. There’s a plan, there are good coaches involved that aren’t your buddies, and they are successful. Gase either couldn;t sell his vision to the right guys or didn;t know the right guys.

I’m probably the only one who thinks this but I didn’t think Sparano was that bad. He took over a team that was 1-15. There weren’t a lot of great players on that team, some good ones, but most would have been, or were, cut from other teams. He found a way to get the best ones on the field and use them as effectively as possible. That’s a good coach in my book. From all reports the players played hard for him. I didn’t see that with Philbin and I don’t think Gase has a clue what to do and I think the good players on the team know it the same as most of us do.

YOU are a sweet, well motivated fan, young lady. But the sad truth is Sparano was fired more than once and failed to produce a playoff contender at any stop he made. However, he truly was a good guy. And, in many ways, that’s more important in the long run.
THE VERY FIRST THING Miami’s new GM and HC need to address is the sad state of the O-Line and the D-Line. Some around here and in the FO thought things were OK and that little needed to be done. Well the folks who believe that in Davie ARE ABOUT TO BE FIRED–AND soon!. If Miami can’t figure out a way to draft QB GRIER from West Virginia (my personal preference) they then should focus on the best O-Lineman or D-Lineman available in Rounds 1 and 2. But, in my dream of dreams, we take Grier Round 1, then O-Line in 2 and D-Line in round 3. OR, we could bring back Ireland and use all 3 picks on a complete BUST!!!

Only one I know for sure has to go is Tanny. I’m with Mando on that. If I were Ross, Gase and his crew would have to win me over with their plan for righting the ship or they also would be gone. Tbaum and Grier have made some good selections in the past, but not going for it at QB this past year really bothers me. I love minkah, but they showed no balls going for a QB when we really needed one. They are on the most stable ground with me but that’s not saying much at this point.

Tannehill doesn’t even know what a TE is/does. By my count and including today, he’s completed a mere 32 passes to TEs this season. And if you’ve noticed like I have, most of his attempts to TEs are scripted within the first drive or two of 1st quarters. THIS IS PROBLEMATIC, and Gase knows it… hence the scripted plays to TEs so early.
He doesn’t know what an outlet receiver is for period. He doesn’t understand how to properly go through a read progression either.
Herd – I think Tony was better relating to his players, and having the players behind him than anyone that has been here since. I just don’t think he had the NFL chops in the strategy and game management skills. He really struggled in those departments.
Yeah he wasnt a good game planner or manager. I think his place would have been best served in an assistant HC capacity. He would be good for a team to have around and in a pinch I think he could rally the troops but he be best in a advisor to the HC type role to help him relate to the team
He wasn’t cut out to be a HC I liked the man but he couldn’t sustain success. I still don’t know why Ireland got to stay when Tony got the axe though. That was a waste of a year firing one then the other instead of both at the same time
Gase has totally mismanaged this Offensive roster, with too many statistical anomalies to even begin listing.
We walked right down the field with a combination of running the ball and passes to the RBs. He didn’t even wait until that stopped working before he bailed on it. That is inexplicable.
Our Offense can’t lean on our Defense, and our Defense can’t lean on our Offense. That’s a terrible combination.
I don’t want it to sound like I’m throwing Tannehill under the bus, but he just doesn’t have ‘IT’. He certainly does NOT suck, but he can’t seem to put our team on his back. Like Armando and D above, I’m ready to move on from him.
As of right here and right now (many more dominoes will fall before it’s all said and done), I’d be targeting Teddy Bridgewater via FA to be our QB next year. My strategy would include going for one of the BIG QBs coming out in the 2020 Draft.

I’m drafting a QB in this draft and probably the next if I didn’t really feel like I hit with one next year. I don’t think we can wait until 2020 to start this process. I do t want to overdraft but I think we have candidates next year capable of being starting QBs in the NFL and if we don’t start reaching for one we are just dragging out the process. I don’t understand how continuing to wait makes any sense.
I understand where you’re coming from, truly. But if we land Teddy, that may preclude us from having to go QB early in the ’19 Draft. Teddy should be 110% now, having sat and learning behind Drew Brees.

That’s how I feel. I remember most people here and draft experts not liking Baker. He’s by far the best QB of this draft though so far. Mahomes was picked at #10, Wilson, 3rd round, Rodgers late in the first. Hell, Jackson was #32 and he is personally helping to carry a team that had zero chance at making the playoffs before he started playing.
We need a better set of evaluators than what we have and I see Ross holding a grudge with this staff for not drafting a QB. Ross had a better plan than his ‘football’ people and that’s a very quick way for someone to become unemployed.

ORob that’s exactly what I think, I think what’s missing is between his ears and just having instincts for the position. He doesn’t seem like that’s a natural position fir him. When he runs, he looks natural. I feel that had he stayed a WR he might be one of the best right now, but he just isn’t and doesn’t have what it takes to be a QB.
I understand why Tanny got his contract. I understand kinda sorta why he got the extension. He deserved the first one and completely didn’t the second one. The first one was just what you pay a QB that’s your franchise guy and that’s what he was for us at the time.
This last one was more of a product of desperate situation. We didn’t prepare to move on so we moved money around to keep his cap hit low that one year and screwed our ability to get out this year. They compounded the issue by not drafting a guy this year making it even tougher to move on next year.
We owe to ourselves to bite the bullet and stop that cycle. Draft a guy NEXT year.

There is plenty of blame to go around. That’s what sucks. If it was just a Tanny or just one other position or guy, then it would be an easier fix. We have multiple issues. It’s not a quick fix by plugging in a guy or two. That’s why I think you should have a long range view in your picks. Nothing we do next year is going to somehow turn us into a viable playoff contender. Build for the future. I assume this is what every FO does most of the time anyway. We need better players…at several, unfortunately, key spots…QB, DE, CB for instance.

Its not nearly all Tanny’s fault, but he’s not the QB to take a flawed team on his back and win. The OL injuries hurt….especially because we really didn’t get to see our expected starting OL play together for long…so it’s still an unknown if they can be a good, functional OL. With the starters all back, they might be, but you can never count on all your guys staying healthy all year. Backups will play. It’s just a matter of how much. Are ours good enough?

I’m always a player issue over coach issue guy. We need better players. Yes, it’s possible we need better coaching too. I could see giving Gase one more year, but he needs to show improvement in some areas too. Where’s the discipline? Where’s the intensity on offense? I heard from media people up here in MN that watched us warm up prior to the MN game, and they said we looked listless and were completely flat. One guy, Paul Allen, said we looked as flat and uninterested in pregames as he has ever seen in his calling games in the NFL. That’s not good. Where’s the leadership?
