Unofficial official news, and other rumblings

Despite the fact that the New England Patriots are still in the playoffs, and therefore “officially” we have not asked the Patriots “unofficial” defensive coordinator if he wants the job, that hasn’t stopped all media outlets, both radio and print from saying the Dolphins new Head Coach is Brian Flores. In addition, they’re already “unofficially” naming his staff, as Flores has tabbed Jim Caldwell for a senior advisory role to the Dolphins. I’d like to “officially” wish Jim Caldwell a Happy Birthday today. Caldwell, formerly the Head Coach of the Indianapolis Colts, who by the way, was 24-8 as HC before being “unofficially” forced to “Suck for Luck”.

There are rumors that Flores wants to hire former Arkansas and Wisconsin Head Coach Bret Bielema as Defensive Coordinator, but need I say, that’s “unofficial”. Bielema has good experience as a Head Coach, and has a strong defensive background.

The Bengals “Unofficially” hired former Dolphins QB Coach Zac Taylor, who was QB’s Coach for Ryan Tannehill. This leads to “unofficial” rumors that Ryan Tannehill will be the next Bengals QB. Oh please, please make that happen!

The NY Jets “officially” introduced Adam Gase as Head Coach, and I have to say that after the press conference, I kinda feel bad for him. Oh, I still hope he falls flat on his face, but his “crazy eyes” were mostly what the NY sports media talked about. The morning after on the Boomer and Gio show on WFAN in NY, there were parodies of many different “eyes songs”, like “Betty Davis Eyes”, These Eyes”, “Doctor My Eyes”, etc. I’d prefer the NY media destroy him for his football acumen, or lack thereof.

Speaking of the NY Jets, they are close to tying things up with former Browns interim HC Gregg Williams, meaning they have “unofficially” signed him. That’s a damn good hire. It pains me to say so, but the Jets are definitely making things easier for Gase. Williams will allow Gase to do exactly what he did in Miami, which is ignore the defense. While we had hack DC Matt Burke, the Jets have an excellent veteran defensive coach running the defense. It was clear that Adam Gase does NOT have any control of the 53 man roster, another bonus for the petulant young HC who routinely jettisoned players in his Dolphins tenure.

So to recap, we “unofficially” have Brian Flores as HC, Jim Caldwell as a Senior Advisor, and Bret Bielema as DC. We have “officially” lost D-Line Coach Kris Kocurek, who goes to the San Francisco 49ers. Kocurek, by the way, replaces former Dolphins DT Jeff Zgonina. I liked that guy when he played here.

Lastly, but not leastly, the Dolphins have “officially” hired former Bills Scout Marvin Allen as Assistant GM. Allen was with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-2017, in which they drafted QB Patrick Mahomes, WR Tyreek Hill, RB Kareem Hunt, DT Chris Jones, DE Dee Ford, OT Eric Fisher, TE Travis Kelce, OG Zach Fulton and OT Mitch Morse. That’s quite a resume! Looks like an excellent hire, we’re going to need some excellent drafts to become a power in the AFC East. Grier and Allen have a good relationship, and one that should help us going forward.

  2. Randy says:

I’d do my best to try to draft either Deiter or Benzschawel from Wisconsin. Both should be really good NFL players. Brumfield? Meh. Powerful run blocker but there’s a lot better out there at guard.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

But can we get them in the third?
I think we need a DT and a pass rusher first, then a OG.
Bruiser had 53 pancakes where he knocked the DT on his ass. He’s known as the strongest guy on his team.

  3. dcoralsprings says:

I see count chocula has us taking Murray at 13
I’ve heard he’s only right about 2% of the time but you never know
Omar says we are really interested in him (smoke)

I’ve heard Gase and the final say on the 53 was overblown, he never “used” it, all decisions were by committee

LOL, there’s no such thing as an “accurate mock” especially 4 months prior to the draft …too many variables

I’m not a huge fan of waiting until Patriots are eliminated to sign our Unofficial New HC , especially with the way McDaniels played the Colts last year and a few more his year … also was Ross’s Dance with another Patriots guy for GM last time .. don’t trust anyone associated with the Evil Empire… but if he is Our Choice , I hope to hell he can have us as ready to play and able to adjust on the fly as they seem to always be …. hope we don’t get Burnt with a lot of guys already off the board

  7. Randy says:

    naples,
Just my opinion so feel free to ignore it. Strength isn’t high on my list of the traits I want in an OL. Don’t get me wrong, its great to be strong, but other traits are more useful. If you’re gonna run a man power running game then maybe strength gets moved a little higher. I don’t think Brumfield is one of the top 100 players in this draft, so I wouldn’t draft him in the top 3 rounds. I’d say he’s probably somewhere around the 10-12 best OG. I’d draft him in the 4th…maybe 5th. Again, just my .02 worth. He’s got some nice attributes. He’s smart, powerful and reportedly a good leader. I’d just rather have a better guy, and I think there should be a few available in the 3rd if that’s where you wanna take a guard.
    ***
I think a guy like Benzschawel can have a similar impact on our line that Zach Martin had. I think he’s gonna be a multi all pro sort of guy.

    • JMHO. The closer you get to the top 100 players the more blurred the lines become in terms of teams/scouts evaluations. Benzschawel is a very good guard and I would love to have him on our team. But, we’ve also seen plenty of offensive linemen drafted, some by us, who were touted as being better than they turned out to be; like Martin.

  9. ocalarob says:

murray is 5’9″ tall, he would be the smallest qb in the league, i doubt Miami goes there simply due to the optics, Ross has to sell tickets, he needs a big QB with a lot of potential. unless Haskins falls to us at #13 i would not pick a QB this year unless it’s a 4th to 7th rnder.

20 and 21 will be better qb years and we should have early picks, go heavy on the OL & DL this year, trade back and acquire picks unless a BPA that absolutely blows your skirt up is there at 13.

  10. ocalarob says:

what do we put more emphasis on this year the OL or the DL???

  11. ocalarob says:

I think you have to focus more on the OL, you have to have a strong running game and at that point your DL will be on the bench most of the time watching the game.
did you see the Rams and Dallas game? Gurley and CJ Anderson tearing it up???
    that’s what i’m talking about!

  12. ocalarob says:

why Gase didn’t pick up CJ anderson is beyond stupid, he was on the street!
    Gore and Anderson, a 1…2…punch.
should have got him last offseason.

    • Mike E. says:

Why Gase didn’t give Drake and Ballage the ball more is even stupider, they were on the team!

      • ocalarob says:

i don’t know about ballage but drake doesn’t run very well between the tackles, power is not his forte, that’s what we would have got with cj & gore a great power running game.
takes pressure off the qb and defense.

  13. ocalarob says:

saints have a great run D, i’m not sure but i don’t think they allowed a 100 yard rusher all year.
the Rams had two 100 yard rushers last week.
will the Rams try to focus on the power running game against the saints this week? or will they pass more?
if the Rams can run the ball they will win the game, if they have to resort to passing they will lose.

  14. ocalarob says:

how many times last year did the offense barely get the play off? how many times were we called for delay of game.
    we had an undisciplined offense.
if you watch the good teams you will see how disciplined the offense is.
the rams break the huddle and run the the LOS like it’s been choreographed.
they always line up with plenty of time on the play clock.
sometimes they snap it instantly catching the D out of position, sometimes they hard count and get the D to jump, the patriots have this efficiency also.

Gase had no clue about this efficiency, most of the time we struggled getting the play off, instead of us having the jump on the D, the D had the jump on us.

  15. ocalarob says:

    Gase ran a sloppy offense

  16. pheloniusphish says:

I don’t think Gase game planned. I think he tried to play sandlot….calling random plays in game.

  18. New Age says:

Murray is small and he looked overwhelmed against Bama. He would definitely need a learning curve but could do it it in a few years if taught right. Someone needs to send a Clelin loves pot story out on the 23rd.

  19. D says:

If they do draft Murray i sure hope they get the right OG’s to open up those passing lanes. We need guys who either can man hanle thier guys and turn them so that the middle of the pocket has a nice open and preferrable a shorter stockier guy. The guy from Miss. State fits the bill. He’s a C/OG guy is really strong, has good run blocking skills but is only 6’2. That last part wouldn’t be a big deal to a taller QB but to a 5’10 guy that could be pretty big.

    • mf13ss says:

I suppose you could say that, in a manner of speaking! 😉

I learned much about the game when I was only 8 years old, having been given a very intensive book about the NFL: rules, playbooks, teams, histories, etc. Wish I knew the name of that book, but I believe it featured George Blanda on the cover.

      • Mike E. says:

I used to get a book every few years, it was a big thick book that came out annually. It had all the previous year’s statistics, as well as historical stats as well. I think it was something like NFL Reference Book. I’ll have to check when I get home. I still have them.

  26. mf13ss says:

    Mike E, here’s a silly story to tell ya…

When I was 8 or 9 years old, I used to LOVE watching NFL films… just like the rest of us. I saw the ’72 Dolphins championship season and it was great! But I saw #13 intercepting passes… how was it that Dan Marino was intercepting passes back in ’72??? LOL

That’s when somebody told me that numbers are forever, unless retired. I interjected: but how is a Safety wearing the #13? Then I learned more about the rules back then, and of the legendary Jake Scott.

  30. D says:

So who here believes that we get an official announcement next week about Flores? Im thinking unfortunately it will be in February before we know for sure.

    • Tim Knight says:

Of course until it’s official it’s not, but I’d be shocked if Flores wasn’t our HC.

I think McDaniels bailed on Indy because of Luck’s questionable status at the time, and the thought that maybe he’ll be Belichick’s replacement at some point. Flores knew what he was signing up for with Miami’s status. Just a hunch on my part.

      • Mike E. says:

So you think NE is going to beat KC? I think it’s Andy’s turn. I think KC wins. Once they do, Flores will be named our HC

      • Tim Knight says:

You replying to D? You can never count out the Pats but I hope KC wins. I want them to win it all.

  31. Mike E. says:

Tim – Yes, replying to D

    • D says:

Yeah i think NE beats KC. I like KC’s offense but its D is bad more often than good. Brady and Belichick will definitely have a good plan for beating their defense. Stopping KC’s offense is the thing, because its a juggernaut.. It would actually be better for us if NE beat KC because that means our new HC shut down the second best offense in the league. I think the Pats are just too use to the playoffs they are really experience in the post season play to count out against a young team that isnt as experienced on defense toshut down the Pats. I guess we will see.

      • Mike E. says:

I just have a feeling this one is going to Andy. I think it’s going to be a lower scoring game too, maybe 28-24, something like that.

      • Tim Knight says:

The one thing about the Chiefs defense is they can get after the QB with Chris Jones who is playing out of his mind, and they have Houston as well.

      • D says:

Brady can maneuver out of pass rush from DE’s, he has trouble with the interior pass rush. Chiefs really dont have much that way. They also have a shitty secondary. I think Brady and NE, will be effective against the Chiefs D, im just not sure how they handle the offense. I also do think they want to get into a shootout with the Pats, because they need to keep their offense off the field, so a nice controlled running game and a hit some bombs on occasion would be best, but thats not how their offense is built. It is however how NE’s offense is built, again, i think this is a bad matchup for KC, but we will see. I really dont care who wins this game, the Pats losing is nice, KC losing means our new HC did a good job with the defense, i can make a positive out of either outcome.

  32. Tim Knight says:

D, Chris Jones is an interior DL. Did you see what he did to Quenton Nelson last week? He knocked him all over the place. The Chiefs are also getting Eric Berry back for this game.

To me the key to this game is the Pats can’t fall behind by two scores or more or the Chiefs can set the dogs free. The problem the Pats have on defense is they usually try to take one player away but who is that? Hill beats double teams, Kelce is a beast and they have other guys who can do damage too. Mahomes is also a great improvisor.

  33. Tim Knight says:

Both championship games should be great games. Really good teams in the final 4.

  34. Randy says:

    lou,
For sure, no draftee is ever a sure thing. There’s always the chance a kid won’t live up to expectations. I think OL probably has a little less uncertainty about them than other positions, but it’s still a part of the deal. But, since it’s part of drafting anybody, you still go with your evaluation and make the best educated guess you can. If we really want to upgrade the OL, I’d draft onein the second round. Benzschawel is just one of a handful of OL I’d be happy taking. He just happens to be my personal favorite.
    ***
People always say: “You can wait and get good OL later in the draft.” and then they wonder why their OL sucks. Lol

    • Tim Knight says:

I think you need a mixed bag. Have a blue chip or two, add another in the 2nd or 3rd rd, a mid rd guy, a late rd guy, a vet in FA and hope to find some gems as UDFAs or young journeyman. Then let the competition work itself out.

The problem is rookie OL even top picks go through learning curves for a year or two. So just focusing on rookies is likely not going to work.

  35. naplesfan2010 says:

I think we need pass rushers and run stuffers most. We also need a road grader OG.
I’d take a huge NT type DT and 2 certified edge rushers. The OG should be in teh 3rd rnd so he’s not like Asiata.
    Also
Getting a shut down corner would help the DL and would blunt Xavien’s contract demands, having some competition there for him.

So we need something in FA to relieve the numbers pressure in the draft.
Do we want the guy from NE or the guy from Dallas at DE?
Is there a vet corner we can buy so we don’t have to live through a rookie learning curve?

    • BailBondMike says:

Naples, I agree. When I keep doing these mocks on First Pick, I always find myself wanting to double down on DL, OL, and CB.

      • Tim Knight says:

I don’t think CB is a priority. We tend to want perfect balance at all positions when doing mock drafts. Our secondary is not a weakness in any way. Target the trenches, QB or a special talent at any position. We’re not looking to win the Super Bowl next year.

    • ElephantRider says:

      Brent Grimes! LMAO

  36. Tim Knight says:

    During a rebuild:
    Needs – trenches
    Wants – special talents
    Have-to-have – QB

    • The Flying Pig says:

I think we are I. Pretty good shape at Most of themskill positions and everywhere on defense except up front

I really think it’s just the trenches and QB that we should address

    • I don’t think a rebuild means we pass on a qb that’s there at #13 either. When you hear rebuild and the “win now” thing being a thing of the past it seems to me they were also addressing the fact that Gase decided to stick with Tannehill rather than go with a young qb who could take a couple of years to get where you need him to be.

So, I wouldn’t rule out qb in the first.

Personally, I think the Giants trade up to #3 or #4 to take Jones. Cutcliffe coached both Peyton and Eli and both of them have been working with Jones since 2013. Strong connection there. Then I think the Jags go get Haskins and the Broncos take Lock. But, that’s JM2C

      • well, they haven’t worked with Jones since 2013. they’ve worked with the Duke team since then and Jones since he’s been there.

      • Tim Knight says:

Have-to-have = the QB you believe in at some point.

      • exactly. the qb is a have to have position and even though it’s a rebuild and we’d like to see some things happen in the trenches I don’t think it precludes them from taking a qb this year if the right one is there.

      • New Age says:

Who’s left though? Murray? I see Haskins, and maybe Jones and Lock gone before 13. I don’t trust Murray at 13 or going before that but he will definitely go in the first. What’s your thoughts about him or other early prospects?

      • A lot of NFL GM’s aren’t interested in Murray; don’t see him as a first rd pick…..because of his size. A lot of them didn’t even bother looking at him before he declared because they were convinced he was going to play baseball and some are still not sure he’s that dedicated to football.

Yet, others don’t think much of him but think that maybe some other GM may take a chance on him and then there’s others who are just trying to create some hype to push him up the board so other players can drop to them.

So Murray may go in the first but it seems the majority of GM’s have a low opinion of him as a qb.

  37. Tim Knight says:

Take the BPA. It’s not like there will never be good QBs available ever again. LOL

  38. ElephantRider says:

    Just say no to Murray

  39. Tim Knight says:

Murray is built like Albert Wilson. I don’t see NFL QB. Unless the game goes in a crazy direction from here.

  40. Mike E. says:

    GO CHIEFS!!!

  41. dcoralsprings says:

The game has change dramatically with regards to QB protection
Were seeing more passing outside the pocket than ever
Mayfield is also pretty small from the “norm” 6’5” ish desired
And he just broke records (just sayin)
Statue QB’s may have had thei4 day in favor of the mobile guy’s who often are a bit slighter

That said this guy is really small lol

    • Mike E. says:

You also can’t hit QB’s anymore, so there’s that too. He’s just a little smaller than Russell Wilson, although Murray looks more like a MLB shortstop. Russell Wilson is definitely thicker.

  42. Mike E. says:

There’s a discarded Oakland A’s cap in my parking lot. Sign?

  43. dcoralsprings says:

    Mike E
Someone will take a flyer on him, just not sure it should be us lol

Size standards at that position does seem to be changing though

  44. dcoralsprings says:

    I agree with that completely
I’m ready to start drafting QB every year if needed to finally solidify

  45. The “standards” for the size of an NFL quarterback really hasn’t changed. Wilson was the last guy taken that was a bit undersized. Mayfield is 6’1″ 215. So he’s a bit smaller but he’s not tiny. Murray is TINY.

  46. ocalarob says:

In order to know the likely hood of a good QB falling to us at 13 we first must see where the FAs land, and there are 2 great FA QBs in Flacco and Foles.

seems the Jags have went the route of drafting a young QB twice and it has been an epic failure, maybe they go after Foles.

Not sure if the Giants are done with Manning and to use a high value draft pick on a position you already have filled doesn’t seem likely.

  47. BailBondMike says:

Not sure where to go as far as QB this draft. I think all of them are projects for the most part. Haskins is the only one I could see a team trying to plug in right away. I would probably wait and see who falls to maybe the 3rd round. If none fall to the 3rd then maybe I would take another project later like Thorson or the guy from ARK State.

  48. ocalarob says:

not sure hiring the NE coach and taking Haskins falls in line with tanking.

if you want to tank to get early picks the franchise qb with Haskins potential should be the last piece you add.

  49. BailBondMike says:

I am all for DL, OL, and CB in 1st 3 rounds really. Some don’t think CB is a need but I feel we need another solid CB opposite X. Unless you feel Armstrong or Davis takes that next step. McTyer is not that guy. I am real high on Julian Love from ND. He is a good cover corner who is a very good tackler also. Not afraid to hit.

I will be happy if they just double down on DL and OL in the first 5 rounds.

    • stangerx says:

I’m with you on CB as to team need if we were getting ready to field the best team next year. If a full rebuild though, thinking only positions you stress are big ugly and QB with everything else talent.

  50. BailBondMike says:

Jags are 3.5 mil over the cap for 2019 and have a lot of dead money if they cut Bortles (I think) so I’m not sure they could go out and sign a F/A QB or even trade for one with a contract like Tannehill. So do they go QB early? Haskins, Jones, Grier, Lock?

    • BailBondMike says:

The are 3 teams picking before us who could very well go QB. Jags, Giants and Redskins. I was thinking Raiders also but not before our pick but probably with one of their later 1st round picks.

    • BailBondMike says:

Sorry, Redskins pick after us. Bengals and Denver are also possible to pick a QB.

  51. Mike E. says:

I’ll wait for the combine weigh in to see how “tiny” Murray is. If he’s 5’10 195, that’s pretty damn close to what Russell Wlson was when he was drafted (5’11 205)

  52. stangerx says:

Pretty cool move by the Eagles, and Foles missed those snaps cause he got injured late in a game. Got held out cause of fear of re-injury. Seemed he could have gone if needed.
    —————————–
    Field Yates@FieldYates
Source: the Eagles have paid QB Nick Foles a $1M signing bonus to account for the incentive he missed out on by just four snaps earned by Philly making the playoffs and Foles playing 33% of the snaps. Philly does right by the clutch QB.

  53. Randy says:

I’m kinda in the middle on Murray. Yes, he’s small, but he’s been able to play in college and not get killed by guys just as big as NFL players. The NFL protects QBs even more than college does, and the NFL game is becoming more and more like they play in college every year. I’m not so sure he couldn’t function in the NFL. He’ll have to develop his game from within the pocket more in the NFL, but the NFL will do everything they can to protect him. It’s hard to predict.

    • ElephantRider says:

I’m waiting for the red jerseys.

The worst part for me is while running…..

Why dont teams just use RBs as QBs. They can run all day without being tackled.

      • stangerx says:

Interesting thought. When we are in the Wildcat does the guy getting the snap have the right to take the slide? If he does never saw it.

  54. Mike E. says:

I think the refs let defenders get away with hits sometimes on certain big running QB’s, like Josh Allen and Cam Newton. I’ve seen them look back at the refs as if to say “Hey, where’s the flag”, but they don’t get it.

I hate when this country comes up with a solution to a problem that will save taxpayers billions only to get snuffed out for political reasons. I’m referring to Ted Cruz reintroducing the “El Chapo” Act. I hope he is successful this time. I haven’t read the proposed act but the gist of it makes sense to me.
Sorry for the short political post, LOL.

  57. Tim Knight says:

I don’t want to write Murray off either but what is the cutoff on size standards? Whatever his actual size is, he looked really small to me. The other concern I’d have with him is if he’s struggling and feels playing NFL QB isn’t working, he can always fall back on his baseball career. Those factors could be why he won’t go 1st rd.

  58. Ken says:

Murray is not the next Russel Wilson

    • Mike E. says:

He doesn’t have to be Russell Wilson, he just has to be good. The comparison came up only because of size.

      • Ken says:

I don’t think he will be a good pro

      • Mike E. says:

I have no idea Ken. I just don’t want to eliminate him for his size alone, if his size isn’t really an issue.

      • Ken says:

It is one of several problems. He is built much more like Pat White than Russel Wilson who is one solid dude. His accuracy is also not like Wilson, I would be very disappointed if we drafted him

  59. Mike E. says:

Has anyone here noticed that NFL players don’t drink Gatorade? They’re drinking from Gatorade squeeze bottles, but there’s water in there. Isn’t that kind of odd, and deceiving?

    • Tim Knight says:

Advertising. I do think some players also drink other types of hydration drinks. I’ve seen colored liquids at times. Also those big containers they pour on coaches after big wins is usually orange.

That’s my view. Just line up a RB as QB and since they are now allowed to dive head first without getting touched you can pick up some easy yards.

I don’t want to draft Murray either, but he’s already proven he can play with big men and survive.

    • Tim Knight says:

No comparing the college game to the NFL where you play the best talent that was in the country every week. I think people lose sight of that. We’ve seen many QBs who were dominant in college not make it in the NFL.

Can Murray in the pocket against a pass rush with big men with their arms up and bearing down on him see the coverage and make the throw not being able to step up?

  66. stangerx says:

Drooling on the thought like a dog owned by Pavlov anyhow….. but sure would be nice to have the Pats lose and get Flores in place (or not) and move on from there.

  67. Tim Knight says:

There was a joke back in Tebow’s season in 2011 with Denver where the WR coach was telling his receivers don’t worry about routes, just try to track where the ball is going because the defense doesn’t know either. LOL

BBM I love BOTH your drafts. Man you should mail those to Grier.

  71. Randy says:

    Tim,
Whether or not he has the skill and talent to be an NFL QB is one thing. Size is another. Guys in college are just as big as NFL guys. Ya can’t say he hasn’t been able to play with big guys because he has. Whether he can do it in the NFL is yet to be seen. That’s why I said he has to prove he can do it from inside the pocket. I’m not saying he can or can’t. Others have, so there’s a chance he might. You never know.

    • Tim Knight says:

Some of the competition he’s played against are not big time NFL prospects. He was superior to his competition most of the time. In the NFL it’s the best of the best that he played against in college. The bar gets raised in the NFL. In college you don’t play against seasoned vets who are master technicians. DL, LB and DB are all new challenges. He’s not as fast as he was most weeks in college because the competition in the NFL converges much faster.

That said I just thought about a new offense that could be a new wave going forward. Stay tuned! LOL

  72. naplesfan2010 says:

Concerning drafting a CB, ok so we have 3 good subs. You need those. It’s a long season.

But what if we added a clone of Xavien on the other boundary?
There would be nowhere safe to throw it against us.

We MUST stop teams from big plays downfield and long 3rd down conversions,
    2 of our glaring weaknesses.

No Tim, he can’t. (See Alabama game, which didn’t even have that great of a pass rush.)

  75. mf13ss says:

Another LB/S I really like is Jawuan Johnson out of TCU (formerly of NIU). He’s likely going to go late-UDFA, but somebody is going reap the reward.

  76. Tim Knight says:

I’m not concerned about another corner at this time at all. You can find serviceable. We have good talent in the secondary but we need to be more imposing in the front 4 and 7.

Cornell Armstrong is a sleeper in season 2, earned his way on STs and got some corner experience. I have no issue with him, Tankersley and McTyer or someone like him competing for a spot or two. If Howard, Minkah, McCain, Jones and McDonald remain, it’s not a dire situation.

We’ll see but the secondary is not a big issue for me.

  77. mf13ss says:

If I’m Kyler Murray’s family or agent, I’m highly suggesting him to choose baseball over football. He’s only keeping his options open by declaring for the Draft, buying more time to decide his future. Thus, no decision has been made as of yet.

That said, I’m not touching him as an NFL QB (regardless of team). YES, he’s got crazy talent. NO, I don’t believe he’s NOT going to get seriously injured as an NFL QB. The zebras can protect him only so much… until a massive DT or DE don’t care about drawing a flag and/or fine for pummeling him.

  78. mf13ss says:

Without knowing (officially) who our HC will be (yes, it’s likely to be Flores), the base Defense we will unveil (3-4/4-3), and the style of Offense we will unveil… I really don’t know which players to ‘super scout’ in order to fit our future schemes. Scheme-fit is probably the #1 thing one must look for when drafting.

However and regardless, I think it’s pretty clear that we need to address the D-Line, O-Line, and QB positions… in no particular order (BPA at these positions). If we’re going to rebuild, these are the ‘meat & potato’ positions.

    • Tim Knight says:

I say think versatile and smart. That’s the Patriots way. They don’t rely on one or two dominant players. They rely on their strengths. It could be 1, 2 or 3! They’ll win utilizing a half a dozen players on both sides of the ball you never hear of.

That’s what I like about Brian Flores, he’s been around it for 14 years in multiple roles.

  79. My boy David Blough made himself some money yesterday

  80. BailBondMike says:

Naples, I like that CB. Plays big and physical. I was real high on Julian Love but watched a bunch of game tape (not highlights) on him yesterday while bored at work. I feel he is a really good corner but he may end up being a slot corner in the NFL and that is not what we need.

  81. Name to watch for Phins in the draft. Christian Miller of Alabama. 6’4″ 244 OLB/DE. Mainly used as a pass rusher/defensive end at Bama but gives them the versatility Hightower gives NE. Day 2 prospect.

    • BailBondMike says:

      BEST TRAIT – Hand Usage
      WORST TRAIT – Burst
RED FLAGS – Suffered a torn biceps in the season opener against Florida State his redshirt junior season, missed ten games as a result.
After three years of sitting on the bench, playing sparingly in blowouts and balling on special teams, Christian Miller thought his time had come as a redshirt junior. Unfortunately, a torn biceps knocked him out of the lineup for the next ten games, meaning the wait for a big-time impact was delayed until his fifth season with the Crimson Tide.
Still playing only about half of Alabama’s defensive snaps (I’m guessing based on tape), Miller was excellent in 2018, showing off a diverse pass rush plan, terrific hand usage and the physicality needed to help offset his lack of elite athleticism. Miller may not be the most high ceiling edge defender in the class, but he looks like a solid rotational player in the NFL who can play in a variety of fronts and stances while providing some versatility in coverage or as a rusher. A strong Senior Bowl can really help his stock.

  82. Ed Oliver’s workout videos are insane. Can’t imagine a guy his size moving like he does

    • The Flying Pig says:

      He’s great

I think he might be a real impact player in the nfl

    • BailBondMike says:

Run Defense – Elite penetration ability.
Pass Rush – Explosiveness off the ball, active hands and rare flexibility leads to consistent interior pressure in the face of the quarterback.
Effort – Fires off the ball with intent and urgency. Aggressively battles throughout every snap to defeat blocks, find the football and finish.
Hand Technique – Explosive and powerful hand usage. Strikes quickly to get his hands on his blocker and control reps.
Play Strength – Lacks the desired mass for his position but overcomes that by playing with great leverage, aggression and illustrates tremendous strength throughout his frame.
Play Speed – Quickness and ability to get off the ball puts considerable stress on interior blockers to move their feet and stay square.
      BEST TRAIT – Penetration Skills
      WORST TRAIT – Size
RED FLAGS – Size, Missed 4 games in 2018 with knee injury
Ed Oliver’s ability to penetrate with quickness off the snap and utilize his hands to play through contact makes him an ideal fit as a three-technique in a 4-3 alignment. While he lacks size, Oliver plays with tremendous leverage and offers the play strength needed to exchange power on the interior. By year three, Oliver has the upside to become one of the NFL’s premier defensive playmakers against the run and pass.

  83. Looks like if Pats win the Phins will be talking to Flores before the SB to make it official and discuss staffing and get some people hired sooner rather than later. Caldwell expected to be assistant head coach/qb’s coach.

  84. ocalarob says:

Signing Nick Foles does not sound like a tanking situation to me.
will probably take a multiyear 25+ mil contract.

  85. Mike E. says:

Rob – I hope we don’t sign Foles. You don’t rebuild your team by signing a QB for $25M, especially when you still have a QB on the payroll at over $25M. That would be asinine. Don’t worry, it won’t happen. We’ll draft a QB this year, maybe next year too.

  86. The Flying Pig says:

So is there a formal decision on whether we will be a 4-3 or 3-4 next year? Anyone know?

  88. The Flying Pig says:

I don’t know ho we bring in pass rushers if we don’t get one really early in the draft

Better hope Charles Harris comes around this year

  89. Mike E. says:

Phelon – Technically, we don’t really even have our HC yet, let alone coordinators

  90. The Flying Pig says:

Even the start times of the championship games makes me angry

  91. pheloniusphish says:

Mike E. – I know, right? Maybe after today, but I’m not counting on it.

  92. pheloniusphish says:

For all the SW Florida mob…I will be living down your way for the next couple of months starting next week.

  93. ocalarob says:

if they cut Tannehill we are only losing 13 mil so they very well could sign Foles, Miami is rated the highest probability of getting him, i
It just doesn’t jive with what Ross said.
I think Foles is fare, he had a great D and a rushing attack to help him.

    • BailBondMike says:

Also, he is very comfortable in that offense/on the same wave link as Peterson. Can’t expect the same Foles right off the bat in a new offense. (IMO)

    • Mike E. says:

That could make about $40M for the QB position. Not happening. No reason to do that. If I’m really rebuilding, I’m looking for a young QB that will lead us for the next decade, and at least 4-5 years of those on a rookie contract. That’s the way to do it.

    • stangerx says:

I’ve always like Foles, least more gamer in him than Tanny. But if we bring him in for big money…. hoping will not be with the thought of doing a serious rebuild. And not saying against that. Sure would make games more interesting to watch next year.

  94. BailBondMike says:

Just had a WFT moment. Office phone rang and caller ID showed Jim Caldwell calling. LOL

  95. pheloniusphish says:

Stanger – Burnt Store Marina, between Ft. Myers and Port Charlotte.

    • stangerx says:

Makes it seem Naples would be your man then. Pretty sure don’t have more over that way based on the reports when Irma turned and who we were worried about.

Good time to be there though. Funny how East and West coast are like different states (blame the everglades), but my main knock on SW is dead when not the season. If you feel like braving the gators going across, let me know though.

      • pheloniusphish says:

I like it dead. But I’ll brave the gators while I’m there.

      • stangerx says:

Would be cool — and unless they started putting speed cameras up, one of the joys of the alley is speeding like you did when you were young.

  96. pheloniusphish says:

I don’t want Foles either. Start drafting QBs until you find your franchise. Then keep drafting them. That’s where they went wrong with RT. They stopped drafting QBs because they thought he was the guy.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Agree

It wasn’t so much that they stuck with tannehill
It was that they refused to draft a new QB

It actually set us back this year

The only thing that give me some comfort as that we signed Falk mid season who I wanted to draft
