Preseason Game 1 – Atlanta Falcons @ Miami Dolphins

Game action is here, but don’t get too excited. The players are probably pumped up, but preseason games don’t often show a lot about a team. Teams use the most basic and streamlined playbook. What these games are about is how your starters match up against the other team’s starters, how your two’s match up against the other teams two’s, and so on and so on.

Despite the fact that we won’t see any anything exotic from either team and from either side of the ball, we may get an idea how the team looks in the various formations, such as 3-4 rather 4-3 alignment. You know we’re going to see nickel and dime formations but there may be some wrinkles as to who is in them.

The starters in this game won’t all necessarily be the starters in the regular season Game 1. There’s definitely some experimentation and psychological warfare going on here. Flores is trying to motivate certain players to ascend while also giving some people an opportunity to flourish. It’s a common theme in the preseason, all teams do it.

What I’m looking for is for guys to execute their jobs well. On the offensive side, that means the O-line holds their blocks and win their individual battles. Same goes for the D-line, beat the guy in front of you.Due to the fact that the playbook (for both teams) will be basic, I want to see the RB’s be patient and find the hole, not try to bounce everything to the outside too quickly. I want to see the QB’s throwing to multiple receivers, WR’s, TE’s, and RB’s as well, but not an overload of check downs.

Atlanta has a lot talent on the offensive side of the ball. Matt Ryan will play sparingly, and because they recently placed 3rd string QB Kurt Benkert on IR, Matt Schaub and now 3rd stringer Matt Sims will get the majority of snaps. tevin Coleman is gone, but Devonta Freeman is still there and Coleman is replaced by Ito Smith. Julio Jones is still there but he will get limited snaps. The Falcons O-line is formidable and should be a good litmus test for our front 7. On defense the Falcons are less dangerous, allowing 423 points last season.

For the Dolphins, it will be very interesting to see how LG Michael Deiter fares, and also how RT Jordan Mills is coming back from injury. Besides LT Laremy Tunsil, everyone on the O-line is a question mark. RB’s 1A and 1B Drake and Ballage should both be motivated to show they deserve more carries, so that should be fun to watch. Parker, Stills and Wilson round out the WR’s with Gesicki starting at TE On defense, Harris and Carradine are the ends and rookie Christian Wilkins and Davon Godchaux are inside at DT. Baker at WLB and RaeMac in the middle and Alonso at SLB. As of now it shows Jones and BobbyMac at S, but Jones is in a walking boot so it may be TJ. Eric Rowe will be the CB opposite X. Keep an eye on Rowe because he should see a lot of action.

Let’s hope we see some good play, and no injuries and we’ll call the night a success!

GO DOLPHINS!!

Does our O look anything like NEs?

    Kyler looks good so far.

  2. naplesfan2010 says:

Then Gaskin ran well and also caught the TD.

  3. CavalierKong says:

Our 2nd and 3rd string offenses have been doing whatever they want since the 2nd quarter. It’s only preseason game 1, but this has been fun.

  4. son of a son of a shula says:

    Too early to tell

  5. CavalierKong says:

I missed the 1st quarter and didn’t see Fitz play, but just based on what I’ve seen of Rosen this game, I definitely would love to see him get some time with the ones next week.

  6. CavalierKong says:

    missed tackle

  7. Rockphin says:

Man, he has played a lot tonight and it seems like every pass is going toward Needham

  8. CavalierKong says:

OT in preseason is ridiculous. If it’s tied at the end of regulation, then it should end as a tie.

  9. son of a son of a shula says:

I always thought Rudock was spelled with two D’s

  10. CavalierKong says:

    Oh well, lol.

  11. son of a son of a shula says:

    Rew-dock

    Not
    Rud-duck

  12. CavalierKong says:

    Let’s get a stop

  13. CavalierKong says:

    Nice timing on that sack!

  14. son of a son of a shula says:

    Hendrix
    Purple haze with a sack

  15. son of a son of a shula says:

    I like Ledbetter too

  16. CavalierKong says:

    Woohoo!!

  17. Rockphin says:

Gaskin looks like the real deal tooo

  18. son of a son of a shula says:

Gaskin for a friend, was that 2nd TD sweet or what?

  19. steveccnv says:

    That was weird

  20. son of a son of a shula says:

    Sanders is money tonight

  21. CavalierKong says:

I understood everything both coaches did right up to the Miami TO.

  22. naplesfan2010 says:

Hendrix and Ledbetter both look good.

  23. son of a son of a shula says:

    Hendrix is a machine

  24. Rockphin says:

purple haze all in my mind

  25. Rockphin says:

I am pleased. They may continue to exist

  26. Rockphin says:

    thanks Kong

Nice gift from the Dolphins today.

  27. wyoming85 says:

Hey we scored 34 for whatever that’s worth!

  28. son of a son of a shula says:

Tannehill can’t even count to 34

  29. CavalierKong says:

    Fun game!!

  30. naplesfan2010 says:

That was a fun game to watch.

That is a big improvement right there.

Last year it was painful to watch a lot of the time.

  31. Rockphin says:

Roooo DIck was the best QB of the three tonight

  32. naplesfan2010 says:

Well that was a good start considering it was our first game and not Atlanta’s first game.
And they have a veteran HC and system and we have a rookie HC, OC, and DC.
and none of our QBs were even on our team last year.

And we started 2 rookie OGs and a rookie DT.

So we did not look too chaotic considering all that.

    • CavalierKong says:

I forgot Atlanta played last week. Good point. And yeah considering the coaching and system changeover, nobody looked lost out there.

It’s my MO to be driven by game to game emotion, so it doesn’t surprise me that after this game I am really excited about this team moving forward, lol.

But seriously, do we finally have a fucking football coach?

  33. Tim Knight says:

I think the coaches got plenty to look at. It’s wasn’t a 13-10 ugly game. There was good and bad at 34-27. When is the last time we won like that? We may not have seen everything but the coaches did. Some guys earned their way closer to making the team and others are closer to being cut.

  34. naplesfan2010 says:

And see with Rosen showing so much heart by shaking off sacks and completing passes with guys all over him and dropping seeds in the bucket 30 yds downfield, it just makes his blockers want to kill people for him and his runners think hey I ‘m not going down easy either then FUCK and his WRs keep working to get open becaus hey the QB might throw the ball to you even at the last second and the defense is over there gettin fired up thinkin if we get a stop, we can get the lead cuz Rosen is gonna score points.

    • Rockphin says:

LOL tone it down a little. He IS NOT inspiring the team with the play he has shown so far. Too funny put down the kool aid

  35. New Age says:

I had to work but I love looking it up and finding we scored 34 in any type of situation. Rosen is rough around the edges but I think he’ll help us keep all those picks for a playoff push in 2020 or 2021. Preston Williams is a fantastic freebie as well. Things are looking up again!

  37. wyoming85 says:

  38. wyoming85 says:

  39. wyoming85 says:

  40. dloxahatchee says:

Williams appears to have some skills,
That’s the kind of showing you would hope to see in the first preseason game of a first rounder

  41. dloxahatchee says:

Rosen also had a pretty good showing, this could be a fun season to see how he comes along

  42. Krishna says:

Can’t WAIT to see this at 4am tomorrow morning!!!!

I can’t remember when we scored 34 points in any game last season. WTF???

  43. naplesfan2010 says:

with Rudock continuing the production, it shows that our offense has good design that gets guys open and beats coverage. We had open RBs, TEs, WRs, slot guys, long, short, outs, ups, crossing patterns … you name it, it was there and open … if our OL could’ve given our QBs more time, we could’ve scored 50.

Sure some of it was against their 3s, but it was our 3s.
Atlanta never really defensed us successfully at all.
Compare that to how Denver’s QBs played in the HoF game
and the paltry offensive showing they had.

    • steveccnv says:

On the first post after the page turn I asked, if our O looked like NEs? This post suggests it does. Thanks Naples.

  44. Mike E. says:

Didn’t see any of the game, but so pumped we scored a bunch of points! Yessir! I don’t know any stats yet, I’m going to record the game Saturday morning and watch it at some point. Quite happy I can look forward to watching it!

  45. Mike E. says:

Looks like Ballage doesn’t qualify yet as a power back. He gained over 10 years on one carry, WTF!!!

  46. Rockphin says:

News Media Blog Brian Flores wants Josh Rosen to rein in “gunslinger mentality” [1 hours ago] [Open in Separate Window]

  47. stangerx says:

Most unhappy person the game last night must have Devante. Preston Williams is the real deal. On the roster at least, we’ll see ho much more.

  48. Rockphin says:

Well that was a good start …………So we did not look too chaotic considering all that.

    Reply

I agree, Although when our D was on the field everything seemed to be a lot more chaotic, but in a good way because our boys were creating the chaos

  49. Rockphin says:

Yes Needham is #40 and we cannot get Rowe back soon enough

  50. steveccnv says:

Watching highlights I kept seeing 40 lagging behind, then I remembered comments people made on here last night saying he sucked. Putting 20 and 20 together, I came the the conclusion…😉

  51. stangerx says:

Jason Taylor is the new man in the preseason booth. Did a pretty good job.

At one point Geise was talking about how Preston Was 6-5 and JT said “Don’t count on it. I was listed at 265 my whole career and I never spent a day north of 244.” Amazing given what he did.

    • Rockphin says:

I liked his insight. He has a good speaking voice too.

Who is the ancient guy not named Griese in the booth? Man, crypt keepers older brother.

  52. Rockphin says:

#55 Double Nickle seems to be the real deal too. He is “undersized” but man does he fly around. He is in the shot every defensive play.

  53. Rockphin says:

OT Laremy Tunsil – Tunsil didn’t play last night, but his value to the Dolphins has never been more clear than now. Watching Miami’s other tackles try to step in on the left side was an ugly sight — reaffirming Tunsil is one of the two or three most important Dolphins in 2019.

  54. stangerx says:

One thing that was clear about the D we were playing at least last night was that included a centerfielder. And that FS was way deep.

  55. Rockphin says:

    https://dolphinswire.usatoday.com/gallery/10-losers-from-the-dolphins-34-27-victory-over-the-atlanta-falcons/

CB Nik Needham – Needham had a brutal night, the Falcons continued to attack him in coverage and Needham continued to give up real estate. There were mental errors, penalties, poor anticipation in coverage, getting run over in run support — you name it, we saw it from Needham last night.

    © Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

I am actually surprised that he didn’t have to get his own flight home from Atlanta LOL

    • Rockphin says:

OL Will Holden – Holden lived up to his name last night, grabbing Falcons defenders to try to slow their rush. Holden was the source of multiple pressures and penalties — expect a few trips to Brian Flores’ T.N.T. wall for that.

      LOL (not funny, but funny)

  56. BailBondMike says:

One thing I noticed about our QB’s that was very obvious and something we have not seen in a while. Pocket presence and escapability!

  57. stangerx says:

In a post game interview, Stills said he’s gotten “five to 10” death threats in the last 24 hours. And he wasn’t talking about during the game.

    • Mike E. says:

That’s a damn shame. I would imagine he wishes he spoke privately to Ross rather than make a big deal out of it on twitter.

      • stangerx says:

I could not for the life of me imagine calling out my old boss publicly for something. Many times told her in polite terms that she was a stupid ass for this or that behind closed doors though.

      • Mike E. says:

Especially since Ross has been very supportive of Stills’ cause. That was a slap in the face.

    • BailBondMike says:

How can you get 5 to 10 death threats. If I was threatened in that way, I would know exactly how many times. With that aside, this is a shame and hopefully the FBI in on it.

  58. BailBondMike says:

    More QB notes:

Fitz didn’t look his age. Scrambled very well and made plays out of it.

Rosen’s talent is obvious but had 2 bonehead throws. 1 intercepted the other he threw up for a prayer. We caught it but was lucky it was not picked also.

  59. wyoming85 says:

    I wouldn’t bet on it Mike E

    • Mike E. says:

OK then, he obviously doesn’t care what Ross thinks, and how long it is before Ross doesn’t care if Stills is still here. Was one of the death threats from Ross? lol

  60. wyoming85 says:

Thanks Kenny! Now Piggy and David get to see their favorite person in Dolphins news! 😉

  61. stangerx says:

From wyoming’s link, Flores had the same Q that a lot of us do.

“I asked him why he didn’t talk to the owner, why he didn’t talk to Steve before putting something out there. That’s something we have to do more of, more communication, more conversation, if we want to make change. I wish he would have done that. I told him that.”

  62. BailBondMike says:

“It’s not about politics. It’s never been about politics.
    —————————————–
Uh, Kenny, you are the one who made it political. SMH!!

  63. stangerx says:

We all saw it, but this is Andy Cohen, who has met and seen a bunch of wideouts come and go. Trying not to give into the hype, but right now thinking we at least got a quality wideout on a UDFA contract.
    —————
We’ve seen impressive summers by rookie receivers before. But this impressive? This quickly? From an undrafted player? Can’t remember the last time that’s happened. A cautionary note: It’s still very early.

  64. sb7mvp says:

I wouldn’t expect kenny stills to waver in the face of opposition. He’s a man of character. This whole situation is being overblown by internet drama queens. Calling out his boss on twitter wasnt the best decision, but it’s pretty benign. Its definitely not cut worthy of death threats or being cut. Leaders shouldnt be impervious to criticism, no matter where it comes from.

  65. Mike E. says:

SB – It wasn’t just what he said, it’s where he chose to say it, and now all the hassle Ross has to deal with all the protests. If he had come to him and discussed it privately, this wouldn’t have happened.

    • Mike E. says:

What it actually reminds me of is my sister-in-laws ex wife telling me I HAVE to vote for Clinton for my family, because of gay rights etc . . . OK, I believe in gay rights, but there are about 100 other issues which I can’t vote Democratic for, so therefore I’ll vote for I want to.

  66. sb7mvp says:

Mike, I dont know what you’re disagreeing with. I already said he shouldnt have gone to twitter with it.

    • Mike E. says:

I guess what I’m saying is he should let the issue die. Not saying he has to think differently, but he shouldn’t be pressing the issue. He could just say I’m not going to answer any questions about this matter, I meant what I said, but that’s over, now on to football. Instead, he’s enjoying the stage and continuing to press.

  67. steveccnv says:

    Rosen’s cursed run continues.

Does anyone agree with this? I thought Rosen played good last night.

    • CavalierKong says:

I saw that, thought it was a stupid headline. The article did go on to point out some positive stuff after all the woe is me crap. I personally was pleasantly surprised by Rosen last night. I can definitely see the potential there.

  68. TOP SECRET says:

Kenny…….don’t take this personally, just shut up and play football….granted, you do have the freedom of speech…….but you also the have the right to shove you your opinions up your ass while you suck a big ol’ bag of dicks…..GO PHINS !

  69. TOP SECRET says:

    KONG…… what’s up brother?

  70. TOP SECRET says:

STANGER…..I’m old school…..big fan of talent, but couldn’t care less about opinions…..just saying.

  71. The Flying Pig says:

Did I just read that Trump thinks the controversy will make Ross “hotter”?

Wow, when you conservatives get kinky…you take it to the next level.

  72. sb7mvp says:

Yeah, we shouldnt allow people who have public jobs to have opinions. That should be left to the uneducated masses on the internet.

  73. TOP SECRET says:

PIGGY…..Hollywood football ?…no, love their entertainment value, but don’t really care what they think……when I watch a deniro movie (which I love as an actor)….don’t care what he thinks of whomever.

  74. Mike E. says:

Trump and Ross. Very sexy! NOT!!!!!

  75. TOP SECRET says:

Mike E……. speaking of old wrinkly balls…… have you ever went to sit on the toilet and accidently sat on your own balls?…..yea, me too….lol.

    I need some help

play golf with this guy on Fri Morn, you can tell a lot about someone by playing golf with them, the tee time is 10:30 am a lot of guys play in this skin game so you have to be on time.

this guy had to take his 90 year old dad to the doctor this morning. the dad could barely walk, he had to be helped into the golf cart, the reason being the guy couldn’t take his dad to the DR, take him back home and make the tee time, so he brought him with him,

it’s 100 degrees, the dad can not get out of the cart, he has to stay in that cart in the heat for 4 hours! can barely speak, i kept asking him if he was OK and he would give me a thumbs up.

this guy is a real selfish guy, you can tell how he plays golf, he would never help you find your ball, it’s just all about him.in many ways

so i’m thinking this was elderly abuse, after 9 i told him to take his dad into the restaurant to get him out of the heat, you could tell he was very uncomfortable the way he was leaning in the seat.

the guy said don’t worry he’s ok.

I just wonder to whom do i report this too?

as for playing golf with this guy that bridge has sailed

    • ocalarob says:

      ship

    • stangerx says:

You are a good guy for being worried about it, but don’t think you have a legal issue to report. Sounds like the dude was a huge ass (and that you should take note of), but if the Dad said he was OK not much to do.

    • CavalierKong says:

In my position, I am a mandated reporter (I have a legal obligation to report suspected abuse if I come across it). I’ve had to report elder abuse a number of times. The agency we report to in your scenario is called Adult Protective Services. Should be a similar agency in Florida.

Not sure if anything will come out of it based on what you’ve stated. If the guy appears to be competent and said he was ok, then shrug, but who knows.

    • son of a son of a shula says:

Play with him one more time. Have no etiquette, mash his ball into the ground when he’s not looking, leave his clubs scattered about the course when he’s not looking, fart in his backswing

  78. steveccnv says:

Note to self, dont piss off Son while playing golf.

So if I understand the blog left’s stance, it’s okay for Stills to call out Ross publicly and still be a good employee, but Ross can’t donate to the politicians of his choice and be a philanthropist for civil liberty causes. Got it.

    • pheloniusphish says:

BTW – Fuck Stills. Hope he ends up giving blow jobs in an alley for his next rock.

    • stangerx says:

Certainly wasn’t the consensus view on the blog. If you have someone to call out on that then ask them about what they said…… well that’s my take at least.

    • The Flying Pig says:

Ross can, he’s just got to deal with the consequences
Which is being called out by stills and other people who object to trump

Stills has to deal with the consequences too

    ——————-
Hey, Brother Stanger… my avatar is a very friendly reminder of the last UDFA WR we had who set NFL records at the time. 🙂

Many on Omar’s blog for a time actually thought that I was Davone Bess, true story, man!

    • stangerx says:

Bess a good comparison for what we hope might happen, but Preston is something else. Or at least was last night. And X was gushing about him before that. We’ll see, but hard not to think we got high round draft value on the real cheap.

      • mf13ss says:

Agreed that Davone was a slot master, and Preston is a big, boundary WR: they are totally different. Just thought I’d mention that we’ve had success in the relative recent past with UDFA WRs.

I REALLY hope that Preston is the real deal, bud.

  85. ocalarob says:

Thanks Piggy i reported the ass hole

  86. wyoming85 says:

    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/antonio-brown-reportedly-says-hed-retire-over-helmet-heres-why-its-now-banned-by-the-nfl/

This guy is such an idiot. Raiders haven’t even played their 1st preseason game yet, and this drama queen has already froze his feet off, and is now threatening to retire if he can’t use a helmet that is now banned by the league. lol

  89. mf13ss says:

The way I see it, we have some huge choices to make at the WR position with some really good competition. I choose not to chime in on Kenny Stills with regards to politics, but he may have become expendable… as in a trade.

What could we get in return for Stills? A 3rd, more likely a 4th, maybe a 5th? That dude can stretch a field and create YAC galore. I don’t want to lose Stills’ talent, but he may have just talked his way out of Miami.

    • CavalierKong says:

Agreed. Previously, I firmly believed Stills would be with the team moving forward, but publicly calling the owner out for exercising his right to be involved in the democratic process completely changes that dynamic. He may be expendable now.
