Browns offense too much for Dolphins – Dolphins fall 41-24 and record goes to 2-9

Yeah, Landry had a big game against his former team, but the story of the day for the Browns was their run game. Nick Chubb punished the Dolphins all day long along with a sprinkling from Kareem Hunt. All in all, the Browns offense was just too much for the Dolphins depleted defense. Between Chubb and Hunt they combined for 143 yards rushing on 29 carries good for over 4.9 YPC. Landry caught 2 TD passes and finished with 10 receptions and 148 yards. He was covered by Ryan Lewis, Ken Crawley and Nik Needham. The Browns had the ball for over 35 minutes compared to the Dolphins 24. Honestly, it didn’t even seem that close.

The Dolphins were down 28-0 late in the 1st half but managed to score 17 unanswered points. That was really as close as it got though as the Browns pulled away and won easily 41-24. TE Mike Gesicki caught his first career TD pass, which is really surprising that it’s taken this long, but good for him. DeVante Parker continues to stay on the field and produce, catching 6 passes for 91 yards, although some of them were in garbage time. Allen Hurns also was involved often and was tied for 2nd with 7 targets with Wilson and Gesicki. Wilson managed just 33 yards on 6 catches. No threat of a run game shrinks the space for Wilson to operate and it shows. He just doesn’t have that quick twitch explosiveness and is easily caught up with each time he gets his hands on the ball.

Raekwon McMillan returned and looked slow and ineffective in his return. He was a step slow to the edge a few times and wasn’t tackling well either. Hopefully he will improve as he gets back in game shape. HEY!!! Charles Harris got half a sack today! What a terror off the edge he was today! Van Ginkel made his first appearance and made a real nice ST’s tackle, a one arm sweep that upended the Browns kick returner. I have been very pleased with the play of our young secondary but today was a tough matchup. They were out there a lot and had a tough time with both Jarvis Landry, OBJ and the duo in the backfield Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt, all who are receiving threats. We know that most likely these guys will be depth guys next season at best, but as you can see, depth is huge in the NFL because guys get hurt so often. These kids have been working hard and appear to play hard for their coach, so much props to them.

The Dolphins play the Philadelphia Eagles at home next week, a difficult matchup once again. The Eagles are pretty banged up, RB’s Jordan Howard and Darren Sproles are both out but Howard may be able to play by next week, Sproles is on IR. Jay Ajayi signed this week to once again join the Eagles. No doubt he will have a little extra sumpin’ playing his former team, although the guy that ran him out of town is no longer with the tea, (Gase). The Eagles will be desperate for a win to remain in the playoff hunt at 5-6, losing today to the Seahawks in a tough defensive battle 17-9. Miles Sanders will be the guy if Jordan Howard once again can’t go.

Wins and losses don’t really matter all that much in the scheme of things, just playing well and improving are prudent. Sunday there were a lot of penalties, and that didn’t help the Dolphins any. The lack of a run game has been a killer all season as the leagues worst rushing team by quite a margin. The Dolphins average the fewest rush attempts per game at 20 per game and have just 603 yards for a pathetic 3.0 yards per carry. I know our O-line is somewhat makeshift but run blocking is effort and will mostly, so I’d like to see this unit improve in this area. Durham Smythe has been tagged as a plus run blocking TE and I just haven’t seen it. It’s hard to see him all the time, but when I do, he’s not winning. Evan Boehm who has played both C and either G position hasn’t been opening up any space either. Really, no need to focus on any one player, no one on the O-line is getting it done and our dream of FB Chandler Cox being a plow in the run game hasn’t materialized. Truth be told, he’s hardly been used, and when he has, it’s yielded poor results.

KR/WR Jakeem was injured today and was seen in a walking boot. That also takes some sizzle out of the return game which is a shame. This leaves just Marcus Sherels who has been pretty underwhelming. The Dolphins needed that electricity that Grant brings so this one hurts. The Eagles have a physical defense that will challenge the Dolphins next week. The Eagles are a top 10 defense in some categories, such as yards per game at 323. They are midpack giving up an average of 23 points. Their biggest problem is they’re only scoring about 23 PPG, so that’s why they sit under .500. Two seasons ago when Carson Wentz was healthy they were scoring over 28 PPG.

As far as the future this season, things I’d like to see. I love what Fitz has done this season, he’s been a class guy and brings passion and effort each and every game. At some point though, I want to see Josh Rosen again. It could be in 2 or 3 games from now, but I want to see it. I want to see some passion, some fight from him. Does he really want to start, does he want to be the future of this team, or is he content holding the clipboard and collecting paychecks? This is what I’d like to find out. I’d like Flores to talk with Rosen and tell him that’s the plan, but unless he chomps at the bit and shows it he will be holding that effing clipboard or worse get traded again or cut. I know many of you have written Rosen off but I’m not doing that quite yet. He has talent, I want to see him use it. I want him to work his ass off learning the offense and studying how to read defenses and identify what he sees on the field. This is my hope going forward for him. I think it’s clear that mythical pass rusher we’re looking for is not on the roster, but it would be nice for someone to show a little something going into next season.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Parker, Preston W and the G-Man….. that’s what I call a vertical offense. And all 3 will be on the roster next year.

  3. The Flying Pig says:

    Line up the cupcakes guys

    This guy is comedy gold

    • naplesfan2010 says:

The jests finished with 6 punts, two turnover on downs, and a safety to go with 2 FGs.
      That’s offensive genius.

We got 37 pnts with a missed PAT and a failed 2pt PAT.

  4. Mike E. says:

I just mean that as much as I want to see Rosen play, the way Fitz has these guys playing I can put Rosen on hold for a while. I was joking, it wasn’t a real fuck you.

  5. Ken says:

I was watching the game with my buddy who is an Eagles fan. I almost felt guilty

  6. Ken says:

Rivers looks like he is done. He, Manning and Big Ben may all be done

  7. naplesfan2010 says:

    Gase crap above

  8. Ken says:

This guy Drew Locke looks pretty good

  9. stangerx says:

What we will remember about this game 10 years from now.

  10. Tim Knight says:

That was fucking awesome!!! Did anyone check the news to see if Philly was burning? The NFC East is bad and wide open and the “tanking” Dolphins take the Eagles out. 🙂

  11. CavalierKong says:

Three very winnable games left on the schedule…

  12. sb7mvp says:

I hate that I wasnt able to watch this game

  13. olddolphan says:

SOMEONE asked why Mike E said “Fuck Rosen.” Well, I can’t speak for Mike. But,from my perspective, we NEVER should have acquired the guy because he’s clearly NOT a prime time NFL talent. He was barely average in the games I watched him play at UCLA. And he showed me very little last season in Arizona. One person said getting Rosen was a “no brainer.” I agree. If you’ve got NO FOOTBALL BRAINS Rosen’s your man. But if you want someone who can lead you to the playoffs, Rosen’s NOT your man IMHO. Just another wasted move by the Ross-Grier team.
    ——————-
FLORES looked like a winning NFL coach today—-something I’ve NEVER said about Adam Garse. IF Flores turns out to be the REAL DEAL, I’ll give ROSS and his advisors credit for FINALLY GETTING THE RIGHT GUY ON THEIR 7TH TRY!! – – I just wish they wouldn’t have wasted 10 years of everyone’s time getting to THE RIGHT GUY.

    BUT better late than never.

  14. bookman11 says:

With the way we are playing, and the way we seem to be coached, I am becoming less and less interested in what our draft position will be. This team is playing hard and together, and players are developing!

  15. Tim Knight says:

I just realized I have a really nice white Charles Clay #42 jersey. Maybe I can cover the name with Laird? 😉

  16. Tim Knight says:

The Pats have played Brady in the 4th quarter up by 3 scores with 2 minutes left. They don’t do the rest/be safe thing.

  19. bookman11 says:

I find it interesting that earlier in the year when the Dolphins were losing badly and Flores was trying different things and trick plays and being aggressive, people were saying they were purposely losing and tanking. Now when there is some success it is because he is trying to build a culture. Some of us thought it was the latter all along. Lol

    • stangerx says:

Still think he shouldn’t have gone for 2 against the Skins, but maybe aggressive he is in his play calling. Eagles went on it at 4th ‘n 2 in the first half when they shouldn’t have. Don’t think they were thinking tank.

      • bookman11 says:

I am not sure why you are still hung up on that decision? Is it because it was the Fest? Is it because it is not what you would have done? It is consistent with what Flores has done all year.

      • stangerx says:

I wanted OT. But yeah it fits in now, even if still think a bad call.

  20. Rockphin says:

Parker is finally looking like the beast we hoped he was when we took a first round pick WR.

Kudos to Flores for being super ballzy and having the punter throw a TD to the kicker! LOL

    That is TEAM oriented

  21. bailbondmike says:

I was going to guess we would be picking at 4 but if we keep playing like this, it will be around 6 or 7. In that case, I am writing off a 1st round QB. I think I would target in the 1st:

    DT Derrick Brown, Auburn
    OT Leatherwood, Alabama
    DE Gross-Matos, PSU

  22. Ken says:

The Tannehill train keeps rolling in Tennessee

  23. Tim Knight says:

Parker signed a 2 year deal after his 5th year option was not picked up this year. He’s on the books for 2020 at a bargain.
    https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/miami-dolphins/devante-parker-16738/

When he’s healthy he’s the real deal. I’ve always felt that way about him.

Parker and PW were a nice duo. With Gesicki starting to emerge we can see some light, We have to find a young QB of the future, get better on the OL and find an edge rush.

  24. Tim Knight says:

The Raiders are tanking now. Oh my! LOL

  25. wyoming85 says:

  26. Krishna says:

I can’t remember a more fun game to watch. Rosen would not have won this game, IMO, and truly needs to watch and learn.

Flores and Fitz are changing the culture…toward winning. Nice!

  27. naplesfan2010 says:

I love Fitzpatrick and apologize for freaking after the early INT.
    He da man.

  28. CavalierKong says:

KC with a blocked extra point returned for the score. Rare play

  29. CavalierKong says:

Crazy finish in Denver. Broncos get their 4th win.

    • manitobafinfan says:

Yeah that was messed up … I needed OT for some more Fantasy points outta Ekeler, Henry, or Allen …
now I’m down 15 with Seattle kicker vs Minnesota Def

      • CavalierKong says:

Huge flag in that situation. I’m still surprised the ref threw it.

      • manitobafinfan says:

By the book , yeah I guess it was PI. But wow, talk about a game changing call .. and Hayward Was trying to go for the ball .. cest la vie

  30. bailbondmike says:

Looking at our remaining schedule, we could win 3 of our last 4. Looking at the standings and if we were to win 3 of 4, we could statistically play our way out of a top 10 pick.

  31. Philip Bijeau says:

what are the requirements for getting posted here? canamdolphin from dolphinshout, posting as philip bijeau

  32. Tim Knight says:

Just want to ask you all, is it worth replacing Clay’s name with Laird on a #42 jersey? 🙂

  33. CavalierKong says:

What a moronic play by Roby after a great INT, smh.

  34. Ken says:

Brady doesn’t look the same. I think time is catching up to him.

  35. wyoming85 says:

Tunsil looks lost on everything but Pass protection!

  36. Ken says:

Of course the Patriots are losing when I actually want them to win

    • CavalierKong says:

This is a can’t lose for me. I’d love (and prefer) to see the Pets lose. They would lose home field position to the Ravens, and if they have to travel to Balt in the playoffs they’re toast.

But if they Texans lose, it improves our draft slot, so win, win. 🙂

  37. CavalierKong says:

    Hell yeah! Houston making plays.

  38. Ken says:

All of sudden Brady ages 15 years

  39. naplesfan2010 says:

I can’t root for the Patriots … I’d rather eat sand.
especially not against all my boys
even Carlos Hyde is from Naples.

  41. naplesfan2010 says:

    Fuck Gronk
    Real men don’t retire.

  42. Ken says:

Well I am calling it a day. Unexpected result but something to build on

  43. steveccnv says:

Lots of things to consider with the Cheats game. Houston draft pick, Baltimore taking over top seed, cheats D in fantasy. Not sure what outcome I want.

  44. naplesfan2010 says:

Brady’s faces and gestures are those of a spoiled child.

  45. The Flying Pig says:

    • steveccnv says:

Is he reaching his potential, the only option, or is it Flores?

      • The Flying Pig says:

It’s probably in a large part bc Gase is gone
Gase was holding some players back IMO
Not letting the talent be the talent
Drawing up plays which were “too cute”

He is also healthy so that helps
It’s not so unusual for a WR to develop after a few years

Michael Irvin didn’t break 1000 yards until his 4th year
        It’s odd in this era
Most wrs make an impact sooner – but it has happened in nfl history that a receiver is a late bloomer and than is elite

  46. naplesfan2010 says:

Brady at this moment is 9/25.

  50. The Flying Pig says:

I was a bit skeptical about the Parker resurgence
I was expecting to use a pick in day 1 or 2 of the draft on a WR

But you can see it’s real with Parker
    It’s not just a fluke
He’s going up and attacking the ball
Utilizing his talents to win each ball

    Better late than never

  51. New Age says:

If you think about it, the Pats have played only three good teams with a winning record. They are getting blown out by two of them. Maybe…they just aren’t all that this year.

Yes but we could have had the 2nd pick

      • pheloniusphish says:

No matter if they want a QB. Cincy will take a QB, but but Washington and the Bi-Planes won’t. Should we slip behind the Giants, it’s still ok because they don’t need a QB either. As a mate o a if Miami wants a QB and is sitting one spot in front of the Giants, Miami May be able to slide a couple of spots and still get the player they want if it is a QB. Someone will likely want to jump in front of the Giants or the Giants may want to move a spot to ensure someone doesn’t jump them. Miami will have a choice of Tua, Burrow, or Herbert (the top tier), minus the Cincy pick. Or they could wait until later and take a 2nd tier QB if they are eyeballing Lawrence next year.

      • Ken says:

I am not convinced Washington won’t take a QB. Haskins has shown nothing

    Reply

Sad for him, great for the Dolphins. He can take his 1.9 yard per carry somewhere else next season!

    • stangerx says:

Rock — I at least do the OL-adjustment to make that 1.9 a 3.1 in my mind, but yeah he hasn’t looked good. But he’ll still be with us. Sorta of like with Rosen….. maybe needs it set up well up front hopefully.

      • Rockphin says:

he is horrible. It is not the line. The other undrafted guys are running behind the same line and are doing much better. He has no vision whatsoever. He runs with his head down right into the back of his o linemen like his joystick is broken. there can be a gap 1 yard to the right….nope I will just run in place here on my guards back until someone tackles me with their pinky.

      • Rockphin says:

Oh, and I’ll bet you $20.00 he will not be on the 53 next season.

      • stangerx says:

I was never a fan. Kid has size and top line speed, but not so much burst and little juke. Same time you make holes for a guy like that and could lead to some big gains.

  61. Rockphin says:

    Fuck Jeff Kerrat CBS

    https://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/doug-pederson-praises-dolphins-after-eagles-week-13-loss-thats-a-good-football-team/

He just can’t accept the fact that the Dolphins are not tanking.

“For a team that was playing for the No. 1 draft pick earlier in the season (and still is in a sense based on the trades the front office made), Eagles head coach Doug Pederson holds Miami in the highest regard”

No, no they never were and still are not you dick!

    • The Flying Pig says:

For a jerk who believes the Dolphins were fixated on one player, the Dolphin fan base doesn’t hold Kerr in high regard

  62. BailBondMike says:

Piggy thanks for the Parker video since I didn’t get to watch the game. Very uplifting!!!

  63. stangerx says:

Rock — love to read Pederson’s comments…. exactly what we were hoping for.

“That’s a good football team. I’m telling you that’s a good football team. Record does not indicate anything about them at all. They’re well coached. It’s a disciplined group. They play hard. You see that on film. Even some of the games, again their record doesn’t show that, these guys battle for 60 minutes. We knew that coming down here.”

  64. wyoming85 says:

    Pick him up!
If it’s not an attitude problem that is!

Fun game, great way to cap a long weekend (pats losing made it even better)

  68. Ken says:

I know it feels good to see the Patriots lose but I really wanted the Texans to lose because that loss could have possibly knocked them out of the playoffs. That is probably a difference of 4-5 slots in draft position

  69. dloxahatchee says:

Agree w/ the pats loss equalling draft position, just can’t help myself lol

  70. wyoming85 says:

Hey Arizona! How’s Murry working out?

  71. stangerx says:

Ken — little ironic who you end up rooting for when comes to draft position. Last night was the Pats and next up is Tanny. Titans are one game back and play the Texans twice in the last 4 games. And the Titans and Steelers are vying for the final WC spot as well.

  72. Mike E. says:

I’ll try to get the new article out tonight or tomorrow

  73. dloxahatchee says:

That’s awesome Tanny can really help boost our position

  74. wyoming85 says:

    Good breakdown!

  75. wyoming85 says:

  76. pheloniusphish says:

Ken – I don’t disagree about Haskins having shown nothing, but he was a Snyder pick. I think they will give him one more year with a new coach. If he doesn’t pan out, they will go after Lawrence. That’s how Snyder operates – wants the shiniest toy out there.

  77. wyoming85 says:

    Gotta love it!

36: R2P4 OT JEDRICK WILLS ALABAMA
    60: R2P28 G SOLOMON KINDLEY GEORGIA
68: R3P4 TE JACOB BREELAND OREGON

  85. pheloniusphish says:

    So I think:
Cincy lose 2 out of 4 and finish 3-13
Jets lose their next four and finish 4-12
Falcons lose 3 out of 4 and finish 4-12
Giants lose 3 out of 4 and finish 5-11
‘Skins lose 2 out of 4 and finish 5-11
Miami wins 3 out of 4 and finishes 6-12

Of those teams ahead of Miami, Cincy is most likely to take a QB, but may be tempted by Chase Young. the remainder are unlikely to take a QB. Washington or Atlanta could, but i don’t think they will this year.

We are all assuming Miami will take a QB with their 1st pick, but maybe they don’t. Maybe they sat Rosen to give him that red-shirt year he never got but definitely needed. Maybe they roll with Rosen next year with the logic that if he fails they have enough draft capital to go after Lawrence.

I think Jones is gone. maybe a draft day trade, otherwise a cut. Trading Howard on draft day would not surprise me at all.

    • stangerx says:

If Phins win 3 more we will be picking towards the back of the Top 10. Could definitely see Tua there though. Even if he sits for a year.

    • wyoming85 says:

Someone would have to come up with a Tunselesque deal to get Howard!
What are teams going to give you for Jones? The the 3 game injury package?
      Someone off the practice squad?

      • pheloniusphish says:

Yeah, Jones won’t bring much. Late round conditional, definitely no more than a 4th. I think Howard could be had for a 1st, maybe even a 2021 1st.

  86. Tim Knight says:

The only way I see us trading Howard is if a team offers us a deal we can’t refuse.

Jones’ value is not very high. He’s missed a lot of games with injuries and he’ll be 32 next season. I agree with Phish it will be a conditional pick that we wouldn’t get until 2021. That team would have to be one looking to make a run, they feel Jones fits what they want at Safety and they’re willing to take on his contract. Then again we might pay some of it like we’ve done in other trades.

  87. Tim Knight says:

Thinking Patrick Laird is trending towards being a part of the 2020 team. He’s got a solid skill set and he’s tough.

I like how O’Shea is running this offense. He’s committed to the run as much as he can and we throw a lot of passes 10+ yards as a opposed to 15-20 screens. My friend and I were watching the 2nd half and we were saying finally = slants, deep crossing and seam routes and deep sideline passes.

Both sides of the ball are implementing the core of what we want to do, and the STs is putting the league on notice that we’ll go deep into the playbook to catch a team off guard.

I think good coaching is absolutely showing itself. We have a mostly backup team playing hard, competing and even winning a few games. They’ve actually become fun to watch. Even at a time when I thought the Eagles would probably win I was pleased with the effort. Then we take the game over late and it was even better. 🙂

  88. Rockphin says:

I have been rewatching the game because I watched it at the bar yesterday and I am going to take this opportunity say go GESICKI you are looking like a good TE

The Intern is awesome. I have a new favorite. I like rooting for the scrappy guy that Belicheat turns into stars. #42

I apologize Mr. Parker. You are not a bust.

    • Tim Knight says:

Gesicki is developing as are a bunch of other young players. It’s fun to watch.

Looking forward – Parker, Williams, Hurns, Wilson and Grant along with a TE like Gesicki looks pretty good for the passing game. Now upgrade the OL, RB and figure out QB for the future.

  89. Rockphin says:

Williams’ injury may have been a good thing for Parker. Gave him more reps. I am excited to see them both healthy next year with two years in the system for a lot of the players and hopefully with all the draft capital we have some higher potential young guys

Both Parker and Williams were playing well together. And just as Williams started to take off he got hurt. Parker stepped up even more and all the other WRs and Gesicki at TE have had their moments. It’s starting to come together. It takes time during a rebuild. In all phases we’re starting to see players who belong. The core to build on is being developed. 2020 is Phase II.
