Piggy Kiper Reviews Running Backs

Tired of taking Silkwood Showers only to stay home all day?  Well have no fear, the NFL Draft is around the corner…eh…maybe…

Anyway Piggy Kiper is here to help you examine some of the prospects.

Today we are looking at the Running Back position.  Like toilet paper, the running back position has a short shelf life but is always in demand, so teams also keep them in bulk.

The value of the running back position is not what it used to be.  Before the Goodell/Brady/Peyton era, teams places a lot more value on running backs.  But now, we often go a few drafts in a row without a running back taken in the first round.

There is a good chance that a running back is not selected in the first round in 2020.  But the Dolphins are one of a handful of teams with multiple picks, so there is a chance the Dolphins take a running back at #26 and het their pick of the liter.  If they do that, I can see the pick being D’Andre Swift from Georgia.

Swift is fun to watch.  He’s a patient runner, who has a 1 cut style of running.  On tape, Swift has a lot of productive runs after planting his right foot in the ground, making a cut and turning up filed.  His top end speed is not lightning fast, but you wouldn’t know it when you watch him run, because this one cut style puts a lot of early separation between the tacklers and Swift

Swift is a good receiver too.  If Swift has any weaknesses it’s ball security and pass protection.  But he is a very productive and talented back and worth a late first or an early second round pick.

Don’t worry, there are plenty of other good backs.  Like Wisconsin’s Jonathan Taylor.  For most of the season I expected Taylor to be the first back off the board.  But it’s starting to look like that isn’t the way it will shape up.  That shouldn’t scare anyone.  Taylor had a very productive career running behind some very good offensive lines with the Badgers.  Taylor had 6,174 rushing yards in three years with 50 touchdowns!   If that’s not impressive to you, go back to coveting hand sanitizer.

Taylor has good size coming in at 5’11, 219 pounds.  But he actually moves like a smaller back showing the kind if shiftiness that projects well in the NFL.  He’s been durable throughout his career even after carry after carry.  He really has one glaring weakness:  ball security.  Taylor has had a few fumbles but he’s also had close to 1000 touches, so make sure you put it in perspective.

Sticking with big numbers in the Big Ten, another productive runner that might be off the board before the 2nd round is through is J.K. Dobbins, who had 2,000 rushing years in his final year with Ohio State.  Dobbins isn’t as shifty as the two running backs we mentioned on this list.  Dobbins is more like a tough lunch pail runner who is going to be consistently productive.  He actually kind of reminds me of new Dolphin, Jordan Howard…so if you are thinking “change of pace” he probably won’t do that, but what Dobbins will likely do is have a very good NFL career.

Finally rounding out our top four NFL backs is Clyde Edwards-Helaire.  Edwards-Helaire was kind of lost in the shuffle in terms of hype at LSU because of all the attention Joe Burrow received.  But Edwards-Helaire was very productive for LSU.  In fact he had over 1,800 total offensive yards.

Some of those yards came through the air as he had 55 catches.  He’s easily the best receiving back on this list.

A lot of people think of Edwards-Helaire as a bowling ball stout runner, and at 5’8, 209 pounds, he fits that mold, but really, both Swift and Dobbins aren’t much taller than Edwards-Helaire.

He is more quick than fast, but that quickness goes a long way to breaking a lot of tackles.  On tape you can see his toughness on each carrry as he fights for yards.  But on paper, what some people miss is that he is one of the best backs on this list in terms of ball security.  He just doesn’t fumble a lot.

These are the four backs that are most likely to be selected before round 2 is over.  But there are plenty of others backs in this draft, and we will take a closer look at them next time.

Miami Dolphins aren’t backing off plans to deal for Joe Burrow
    by Zach Ragan19h ago
The Miami Dolphins are still hoping to make a deal with the Cincinnati Bengals so they can draft LSU quarterback Joe Burrow.
In recent days, it’s become even more clear that the Cincinnati Bengals really, really like Joe Burrow.

I mean, we already knew the Bengals were in love with Burrow. But Cincinnati owner Mike Brown’s decision to sit in on Burrow’s combine interview — and allow Burrow to ask him questions — makes it crystal clear that Cincinnati wants the former LSU quarterback to be the leader of their offense for years to come.

    Fan sided

Anyone still wondering why I call these guys in the media U75?

“Hi, I’m Tua and I am 100% one hit away from retirement. Will you pay me so I can retire comfortably?”

      • steveccnv says:

That’s what I was thinking. Hopefully everyone else is thinking the same thing too, so he drops to 5, not that I want him bad, I just don’t want to trade up to get him.

Longterm Herbert is the better prospect.

  3. steveccnv says:

Clowney drops asking price to 17-18M.

    • D says:

Which is what we offered, sorry sir but now you get less.

      • steveccnv says:

        Was thinking that too.

      • stangerx says:

I’m glad we don’t have him. Maybe 2 years maybe…. but not now.

      • D says:

If they wanted him they wanted him, if he is having to eat crow and take less id trow another number out there and see if he would take it, it would just be a hard number negotiation where i set the price and he took it or we walked away. He lost the leverage by going down on his demands.

      • D says:

we might not have the cap space now anyways. So throw out something rediculous like 8mper and just smile at him lol

  4. D says:

Well our lockdown officially starts 5pm this Friday, when are you guys getting your lol.

    • stangerx says:

Think a lot of folks on the board have had that going on for a while. Not a complete thing though….. but then where do you have to go that’s open anyhow?

      • D says:

I know they have been told before to stay in, most all of us have, if not all, but this is a step closer to martial law, they are saying basically if your out you are going to be stopped to determine what your purpose of being out is and not allowed to continue unless its for essential supplies, etc

      • stangerx says:

All you have to say here is going to the grocery store or the doctor…. which are legit reasons. “Going to visit a friend” only someone stupid enough to not say the first would do.

    • steveccnv says:

      Thursday for FL.

  5. D says:

Can this shit just mutate and start making zombies already so we can get this shit over with!

  6. D says:

NE’ers, yall beeen under a lock down order? Shit as bad as NYC is i woulda had them on martial law a while ago.

  7. stangerx says:

What’s going on at Hardrock these days…… yeah they set up a drive-thru testing site.

  8. Rockphin says:

This epidemic is going to be wide ranging. Industries you wouldn’t necessarily consider will be effected. Social Distancing. Fragrance companies, deodorant companies, razor companies

I haven’t shaved in two weeks. Deodorant? Why? LOL

  9. pheloniusphish says:

We started lock down in VA couple days ago. Might have been yesterday.

  10. pheloniusphish says:

I think Clowney is screwed. Also think his knee is bad and that’s why Seattle didn’t really try to keep him.I wouldn’t sign him to anything but a one-year “prove it” deal.

  11. pheloniusphish says:

D – I’m with you….let’s get to the zombies! I have all this ammo laid up, a bunch of frustration, and nothing to shoot!

  12. Rockphin says:

“All persons in Florida shall limit their movements and personal interactions outside of their home to only those necessary to obtain or provide essential services or conduct essential activities,” the order read.

The order also requires senior citizens and individuals with a significant underlying medical conditions to stay at home and take all measures to limit the risk of exposure to COVID-19

The order will take effect at 12:01 a.m. on Friday. The order is set to end on April 30.

  13. wyoming85 says:

We aren’t on lockdown with curfews and the sort!
But they have restricted travel from LA, so they are stopping people to check.

Who would have ever thought in High-school I’d be essential????????

  14. Rockphin says:

    These are essential businesses

Tim. I’ve heard that Miami wants to draft 10 players due to the fact that they dont want to spend 16m on their draft class. They want to be around 10m That’s why they expect them to move around in the draft. So money seems to matter or so i read

    ===========================================

Maybe, I don’t really know. But like I mentioned with my trade up possibilities we might want to target what we consider game changing players, even a tackle who is a day one starter and for years to come.

  18. son of a son of a shula says:

Sure Cincy ACTS like they love Burrow. Make everyone think they’re in love with him – only to get more out of a trade from you. We have plenty of ammo if we want Burrow. Every team has its price, who’s willing to pay it.

  19. rich0322 says:

Speaking of when will things go back to the way they were, when the hell are we going to get the old logo back on the helmet? ….permanently!!!

  20. Mike E. says:

Rich – I’m with ya man! Not just the old logo but the old colors, the dark orange, the darker aqua. Pull the plug on these pussy colors they’re running out there now.

  21. Mike E. says:

D – I don’t feel restricted at all. I can still go shopping, liquor stores are still open (THANK GOD!!). I’m still working (ONE DAY A WEEK NOW).

  22. ocalarob says:

    Isn’t golf essential??

    • Rockphin says:

The following services are also outlined as essential in the executive order:

      Attending religious services
Participating in recreational activities (in alignment with social distancing guidelines) such as walking, biking, hiking, fishing, hunting, running, or swimming (consistent with social distancing guidelines)
      Taking care of pets
Caring for or otherwise assisting a loved one or friend

  23. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, just remember we have a very good draft next year as well with two 1’s and two 2’s. I’m not a big fan of having so many picks that you load your team up with so many rookies at once. If we drafted all 14 picks and then signed 10 or more UDFAs now we have 25 rookies coming to camp. That’s a lot.

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Don’t trade my second rounders

Please don’t trade my second round picks
I don’t care what they do with 3rd round or later
But please don’t trade the 2nd rounders

      🐷

      • Tim Knight says:

I understand 2nd rd pick value, but if you come away with three team changing players in the 1st rd by moving up for them at a time when you have the draft to do it, that would bother you? It’s about putting a good football team on the field, not necessarily how you did it.

  24. Krishna says:

    You’re pretty funny pp…….

220,000 “known” cases, over 4,000 dead, models showing upwards of 100-240K dead over the next 30 days……

……due principally, from the lack of leadership, lack of understanding, and basically, poor judgment which is ongoing, at the highest levels of this government.

Also, not sure how this has anything to do with Democrats or Republicans, so you’ve lost me. I am neither, and i’m certainly not a cultist like some of you on this Board. Blind loyalty is off the charts. Lemming-like…..and scary.

I will totally agree that the invading caravan of thousands of women and children that would overrun our borders was a HOAX. No one died; you cultist were scared shitless. Now that was funny, hilarious, in fact. Some might say silly.

Stirring the pot for you, pp.

    • Tim Knight says:

Just for the record, though it’s not in crazy numbers like the thousands, American citizens especially women have been raped and killed by criminal illegals who got in. So to say no one died would be inaccurate.

      • Krishna says:

Such a false equivalency, but you stick to your guns on this one. It’s your right

      • Tim Knight says:

I started off saying not in crazy numbers but it’s still real. I know someone it happened to back in the early 2000’s. The guy was illegal from Nicaragua, had a criminal record in his country and in the USA but somehow he was still free to roam about in the USA.

The victim was the wife of a guy I lived close to when we were younger. This criminal POS was working on their house. He attacked his wife who was home, beat, raped and killed her. Then changed his clothes wearing the guy I grew up with’s clothes when he left. That’s just a more personal experience. But it’s happened to others. The moral of the story is they should not have been in the USA.

      • Krishna says:

I am sorry you’ve had that experience.

You are no more likely to be raped by an illegal than you are by an American or a white man. There are bad people everywhere. It sucks.

And again, it’s a false equivalence. The invading caravan was the hoax, not something that happened 20 years ago.

  25. son of a son of a shula says:

Are you going to Joe Burrow fair
    Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme

    • The Flying Pig says:

🎶 Fuck no it will cost us picks 🎶

      I know that song…

    • Tim Knight says:

Son, I like Burrow and thing he’s a really good prospect, but I don’t feel he’s trade the farm for good. Obviously you think he is, why?

Just wondering because his skill set is not off the charts in any way. He might be savvy good and a solid franchise QB. But I don’t view him as a once every decade type QB.

  26. manitobafinfan says:

I’d like to have him , but not for the cost Orob tossed out yesterday.. all 3 1sts plus .. no thanks.

  27. D says:

Why would anyone believe anything anybody says at this time of the NFL season……or any time when it’s about trades and such really? Misinformation is your friend. Lol
    ——————————–
Maybe, just maybe since they know misinformation helps trades, they are telling the truth because they know others thing misinformation is trades so the facts can hide in plain sight! Never considered that did you…..

  28. D says:

Being that this process isnt being rushed by the FO (i know a lot here are rushing it) it wouldnt be the end of the world, and iot wouldnt kill the rebuild if we did use all 3 first on what essentially is someone they believe is our next Dan Marino.

Step outside yourselves just for a moment and image if you are them, and you see Dan Marino there in the prospect pool, but you know you have to make it worthwhile for Cincy to pass on taking Dan Fucking Marino with thier pick. You give up 2 firsts and swap the other, but get Dan FUCKING Marino….wouldnt you do it?

    • Tim Knight says:

Do you see Marino’s talent in Burrow or any other QB? I do not.

    • manitobafinfan says:

I would get over it pretty quick 🤷‍♂️..

    • Krishna says:

Probably, if that’s what my eyes and team evaluators saw. Then, he’d sit and learn from Gailey and Fitz.

To me, Burrow has the Fitz “attitude” and intangibles that are hard to grade. I’ve seem him make some awesome throws, too.

      • Tim Knight says:

Burrow has some very good intangibles from what I’ve see of him. He doesn’t panic, he’s got some mobility to keep plays alive and he does make some really impressive NFL type touch throws. He doesn’t wow me with his physical ability. But I think he gets it.

  29. Tim Knight says:

Krishna, my main point is not knowing illegal people who don’t belong here, are here, is an issue in this country. You also said no one died which is not true. There are gangs and mobs in this country infiltrated with illegals.

The first order of business of our government is to protect its citizens and defend the Constitution against enemies both foreign and domestic.

I thought your post was a bit too cavalier. That said, don’t want to keep going back and forth about this. My opinion also has nothing to do with who’s president or either political party. They’ve all been dropping the ball on this for a long time.

  30. Krishna says:

Not enforcing existing law is more the problem. NO ONE SHOULD BE HERE ILLEGALLY.

Not my point either, but perfect pivot by you to ignore my point. Look at the birdie over there.

  31. Krishna says:

“The first order of business of government is to protect our citizens…..” quoting Tim Knight.

Which is MY fucking point. Thank you. Which is the greater scourge?

    • Tim Knight says:

You seem to want to pick a fight when all I did was call out one mishap I felt on your part. Now you’re arguing with me about how we agree. 😉

  32. Krishna says:

Not one American died from the invading caravan of women and children….not one Tim Knight.

Who wants to fight? You keep saying people died and were raped by illegals. Your using unrelated events to conflate and distort what I said.

Lying to the public has consequences. Now there are 4,700 dead and will top 5,000 tomorrow. The caravan hoax was a lie to create fear towards immigrants. It has you hook, line, and sinker. It’s too bad. My point is this is a LIE too far, and this time, deadly. Very deadly.

Call it cavalier, if you want, or looking for a fight. Perhaps, you should look in the mirror.

    • Phindog says:

Dude,You don’t have a clue. Try living in a border state where we deal with shit daily and then try to be a expert on this topic. SMH. 🖕

      • Tim Knight says:

As if the NY/NJ metro area as a major world hub would never know what’s going on.

This idea that it was a hoax is a hoax. It’s real.

Krishna, it’s not a fight if you don’t want it to be. I made the same point as you before your reply.

      • Krishna says:

I do live I a border state and the border is much greater than California. You need to get a clue, and perhaps learn some geography. Last i checked Texas was on the border that I’ve crossed many times. Duh.

  33. Rockphin says:

    NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  34. pheloniusphish says:

The point of the article was that the media and leading Democrats called the Trump administration’s early efforts “xenophobic” and a waste of time, the n changed their line of attack when those efforts proved to be necessary. The government failed us. Thee government being the 2+ million petty bureaucrats that make up the various agencies. The last three White House’s and congresses failed us by ignoring the warnings because party politics were more important. I have no idea what the 100K person migrant caravans trying to enter the country illegally last year has to do with the current issue other than it seems to offend you that we tried to enforce the laws and keep them out.
If it were not for the Trump administration’s efforts the body count would be in the millions. But TDS convinces the histrionic that Orange Man and everything he does is bad. Trump is an asshat. Brash and egotistical. Loud and obnoxious. Can’t stand the sound of his voice. Rude. Effective at getting things done. Says what many people, think. Speaks to a large portion of America. Cares about the country. Has been right about many things that the establishment fought. Like trade with China. Like secure borders.

  35. The Flying Pig says:

    (Piggy whispers)

    Tua is coming….

(An eerie wind blows through the blog…honestly it’s a fart)

  36. Krishna says:

I read the article and the point to me was dribble. I got nothing out of except Dems this, Dems that, and they all changed their minds. And, no sourcing, only drool with the dribble.

Trump was calling COVID totally under control in March, on the way down, don’t need testing. said, it in February, too. Was warned in january.

And, we still don’t have the testing and tracking like s Korea, Singapore, Tokyo and

Epic failure by WH and has nothing to do with Dems. It has to do with incompetence.

It wasn’t even close to 100k, try 10k caravan, walking over 3000 miles. So silly. You need to be protected from them? Oh my.

You’re also wrong about blaming others as part of your argument. This is a 3yo administration. If it’s going to take all the glory for the economy, it needs to take all the glory for its complete meltdown in leadership in handling this pandemic.

These are typical arguments people use to defend indefensible behavior. Leaders don’t blame others, cult leaders do.

Another falsehood, “a large part” of Americans (do you mean majority) do not agree with him, in fact, 2.7mm more people voted against him and in 2018 the House was lost. Not sure what colored glasses you’re wearing.

He is not America’s president, just the American president.

    • New Age says:

You clearly have no clue of what you say. We’ve tested more than any of those countries.

Plenty of Dem papers and leaders called Trump racist when he closed travel multiple times including this last one. Dem leaders in NYC had zero restrictions in place for the Chinese New Year. Few travel restrictions, poor social distancing practices, poor general decisions. , etc.

Trump was wrong about COVID. So were Dem leaders. Epic failure at 4000 deaths when the study pushed by Dems said our low end numbers would be 150,000 with the best measures in place. No one knows what the final tally will be including you and your prognostications.

Illegals and easy access through our borders is exactly how this pandemic started. China HID what was happening as people flew in and out of Wuhan for weeks. That’s exactly why Rhode Island’s Dem governor wants to wall out NYC residents. Its the exact way you keep out problems. You wall them out. Illegals are a bane to US society just like this disease.

You want to completely blame Trump because your cult told you to. You want to defend similar or worse behavior from ‘your side’ because of your cult. You will believe anything if it makes Trump looks bad.

      • Phindog says:

        This ^^^

      • Krishna says:

Now the pot is getting stirred.

What cultish behavior have I displayed?

I don’t blindly follow a “leader” that lies every day, I don’t deny his clearly xenophobic behavior whose principal advisor is a white nationalist, nor do I abuse women and pay them off to be quite.

And, mostly I don’t lie or stick my head in the sand and ignore bad behavior or follow a leader who lies every day

        Lol…and I know where Texas is….guess what, it’s a border state.

      • Krishna says:

And, new age is spouting, quoting the Trump line….we’ve tested more than any other country. Talk about cultish gibberish.

Try looking at tests per capita. Woeful failure for a country of 350MM.

I have no idea what the death tolls will be. These are models developed by people a lot smarter than me, NOT DEMS.

Leave the fucking politics out. The s Korea curve has already flattened due to testing andtracking, social distancing and isolation based on testing, and having adequate supplies to treat.

Still no testing except meaningless soundbites spewing garbage that U.S. has done more tests than anyone,

2 months behind the rest of the world!

      • New Age says:

Yes, you’re right. You have no clue about the models, how many we’ve tested, etc. I know all about the models, I’ve studied them and others. I’ll leave the politics out when you do.

  37. Phindog says:

  38. ocalarob says:

This guy is the next marshaun lynch/frank gore type rb

    • The Flying Pig says:

He has a skill set that transfers well into the nfl
But I think he generally avoids contact
I don’t see lynch when I watch Akers

      • New Age says:

I’m not sure a Lynch or Gore is in this draft. That’s a really high bar. If I had to pick one, it would probably be Taylor. He has a lot of of wear on those tires though and I don’t see anyone that will replicate Gore’s longevity Guy can run though.

      • D says:

Vaughn is Ricky/Lynch ltype of back. A long way from being those guys but he runs the same.

    • steveccnv says:

Scatback with big thighs, and good pad level that makes him hard to tackle. Hard to tell anything else from that clip.

  39. Krishna says:

Great news, I hope, from Mayo Clinic. Developed testing amongst itS great doctors and clinics in FL, AZ, and MN. Will begin antibody testing next week and looking to serve nation.

Stressed the importance of all levels working together from top (feds) to the least among us (social distancing). But, test results needed to help mitigate, strategize, control, monitor, and isolate surgically in the community, so we can come out of our caves.

I am extremely biased toward the Mayo Clinic. Been there about 10x’s. Awesome institution and the people, doctors are amazing.

  40. D says:

Tim, i dont think people saw Marino in Marino either, not at the time, no one knows what these guys will turn into, even back then, how many of the QBs taken before Marino were busts? Its not an exact science, so what i was intending with that statement was the idea that we arent going to miss those picks if we land the guy that takes us to yearly competitive play. We arent going to worry over 3 picks to get him instead of one. What we will do though is kick the shit out of ourselves if we dont do it and then he does became the next Marino and we end up with a dud because we “didnt want to waste picks” im saying, its not a waste until it pans out or doesn’t, so you act off intuition, film study, etc and you take your chance when it here and now. Incidentally, i dont see Marino right now either, i mean how could you, one is the greatest QB all time and one is a guy who hasnt taken his first pro snap yet,.

  41. wyoming85 says:

    • D says:

Good for him, its not easy to keep that trend going, a lot of little devils sitting on your shoulder telling you to not fight the good fight. Always good to read that a person who was at their bottom is finally standing back up.

  42. Mike E. says:

The blame game gets old on both sides. How about this virus took just about everyone by surprise, regardless of political affiliation. Neither side thought it was going to be what it turned out to and I truly don’t think it mattered much who was president. Trump had a rough start, totally underestimated it, but now on track and that’s all we can do. Can’t go back . . .

    • steveccnv says:

You’re wrong, Trump is supposed to have a magic wand, so when China dumps its Wuhan citizens on the world, or when idiot spring breakers or Mardi Gras goers…he can wave it and fix everything. It has nothing to do with how our citizens act.

      • CavalierKong says:

He doesn’t need a magic wand. Strong leadership will do. When you have contradictory messages from the top down, how are people supposed to act? Literally just last week, he was still contradicting the overall message by talking about opening the country up again by Easter and attitude reflects leadership.

LOL, I just broke my own rule, and talked divisive politics which has been proven time and again to get us nowhere.

        Free replays till May!! Woohoo!

    • bookman11 says:

Will we take simmons if he’s there?

  48. ocalarob says:

Simmons seems to be similar to van noy and we already have mcmillan and baker.
Not sure if you take simmons?

    • steveccnv says:

Having one on each would be nice. Teams would have to scheme away from both ends on the line and both CBs, that would allow Flores to drop both into coverage on any given play. The middle would be the opponents only area to attack.

So that would leave the most probable at 5 . tua. Or one of the elite tackles. Or maybe trading back.
One of those 3 seems likely

I agree. Don’t see them picking CB or DT at 5. LB or QB, maybe. Not sure any OT is worth 5, but unless you can slide 1 or 2 slots and still get him, you probably take him there if that’s your pick.

If anyone on here lives in GA, I beg of you – get a new governor

    Wow! He just learned that

  59. The Flying Pig says:

    New Age

Suggesting that illegals and easy access to our borders is how this pandemic started is ridiculous

While I agree, theoretically, that the virus obviously is transferred from people whether those people have symptoms or not
And movement of people certainly affects that

But the ease that people jump from that logical belief to illegals crossing the boarder as the source is nonsensical

Mexico has barely over 1500 reported cases now, dramatically less than us
Those numbers are about to skyrocket
But in January Mexico didn’t even have any reported cases as we had many
In fact, a notable outbreak in Mexico is based on wealthy Mexican citizens bringing the disease back to Mexico from Jackson Hole on a ski trip

    https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2020-03-20/some-of-mexicos-wealthiest-residents-went-to-colorado-to-ski-they-brought-home-coronavirus

The reasons the numbers in Mexico are about to skyrocket is bc their own leaders didn’t take it seriously
It hasn’t happened yet but it will
They are well behind us at the present though
That alone is reason to rule out illegals crossing our borders as a source for our crisis now
It could not have come from illegals crossing the Mexican border, (whether Mexican or Central American) when it didn’t really exist there
It’s just not logical to believe that

Obviously people crossing borders between countries and states will spread the virus
But in our case the likelihood that it came to the us through our borders with a country with few or no cases is pretty slim

the virus makes no distinction between legal or illegal entry
And the amount of people, including Americans, traveling or entering far outweighs illegal entry into the country through a border – I mean it’s not even close
Everyone travels, and we certainly engage international trade and legal immigration is pretty substantial as well

That region of northern Italy that got hit hard is actually a notable trade hub in Europe, specifically with China which is probably why they got hit so hard so fast. It’s also densely populated and that affected that. But at the end of the day, it wasn’t anything nefarious that brought it to Italy. It was probably how their economy thrives – trade

Trade and travel are normal things we engage in in this country and that we did on a massive scale prior to March

I don’t fault anyone for failing to stop those things until very recently

But don’t tie border crossings in with that – the numbers don’t stack up
The numbers of people who travel abroad are enormous and that’s perfectly legal and normal for us to engage in
    https://travel.trade.gov/view/m-2019-O-001/index.html

Trade or travel is probably the direct link to why the virus is here. I’m guessing but so is everyone else.
And my guess is a lot more logical than a guess that it snuck in through a border with very low level or no (in January) reported cases

Stopping the movement of people, whether legal or not, in a pandemic makes sense and I get that

As a wide sweeping temporary policy that makes sense NOW

But are illegal crossings at the Mexican border a starting point for the spread – no way, that’s crazy to believe

We were engaging in normal conduct that spread the virus, bringing it in the us, travel and trade and even legal immigration. Inside of the us, interstate travel and within states just going to work and communing – all those things spread the virus and I think most of us want to be able to do those things again

Normal things we have always done and that most want to do again
I can’t fault some one for not seeing that coming, in October or soon after that
In January I thought we were safe

But the earlier we started taking the steps to mitigate those normal things, that really stops spread in the US, so if people think those things were hurt by leadership. It makes sense to blame leadership. I will stop short of saying my thoughts on that.

But make no mistake about it, with perfectly legal things like travel, trade and legal immigration, the virus finds its way everywhere. You can’t just wall people out at the borders to stop that, you actually have to wall Americans IN this country and stop those normal things, which is probably impossible and frankly Unamerican if you ask me.

It’s really the preventive measures our leaders and every citizen takes when it’s here that matters – not how it inevitably arrived.

I blame my own mayor for failing to do a lot of steps early last month that he should have done. I had to go to court bc the city refused to close the courts on 3/13 – by then, we knew we should be taking steps to stop it, but my mayor was slow to act and close the courts and the schools and everything

Those failures can be seen on a federal level if you examine what was done

But the entry into this country – that was going to happen whether there was illegal immigration or not. I don’t blame trump for how it got into the country, I don’t blame anyone for that. I think that was inevitable. Likewise Illegal immigration is a non factor and not notable

It’s probably the one thing that gets under my skin – blaming illegal immigration. So anytime I’m being quiet on a subject and you are dying to hear my oinks on it – just say something like that…lol

    • Krishna says:

Well, you went way beyond what I was going to say about blaming immigrants or illegals….lol. I was just too exhausted.

  65. New Age says:

    Piggy,

I was dying for some oinks and my language was loose. Thanks for the response. To clarify, uncontrolled access is how disease spreads and it was no one’s fault. It definitely wasn’t illegal aliens and I think an American helped spread the disease in Mexico (if I’m not mistaken).

I don’t blame them for this and my point was poorly spoken. True borders and border control helps mitigate many things. Walls of all kinds keep out bad things. Trump has tried to limit access to this country for certain groups and it would have been very handy if we had tested and restricted Chinese travel of all kinds in January, as Krishna expected Trump to unilaterally do.

Like you, I don’t think there was anything we could have done to stop this. Our bureaucracy is too large, our controls are too limited, and we don’t follow directions well as a society, for good or ill. The disease is novel and very contagious. Some evidence suggests it mostly spreads through secondary contact, not via airborne. So, people wearing masks and washing their hands, tables, buggies, doors, etc would really help lower contagion. I think we will be lucky to have deaths similar to the 61,000 we lost to that bad flu season a few years ago.

On to leadership, did anyone do a fantastic job? Trump screwed up. He does that sometimes. His Corona daily updates are hard to stomach. I don’t really watch them, I read the transcripts afterwards. His need to show his leadership even when not appropriate is painful to watch. Just let the experts talk. Shut up sometimes, dude. He at least is trying to get ahead of this now. It is not helpful to push a political bias at these times unless you are perfect but some Dems already want another investigation after going through two already? When does the bullshit end? Some really poor LOSERS. Garbage tier people with the worst set of presidential candidates I’ve seen since RMoney was the candidate.

Cuomo seems to have screwed up. The CDC seems to have screwed up. The WHO definitely screwed up but maybe China paid them to? Who took it seriously outside of bordering countries to China? NO ONE DID. Should we really expect our leaders to be infallible? For one guy to be perfect when no one else was? Is he also responsible for those dumb kids? The dumb people who won’t follow directions? The states who still don’t have quarantines? States do have rights in this instance no matter what some believe. Even Fauci has based our responses on a poorly done study in England that based most of their info on China who LIES about everything. Many experts say their study was a worst case scenario even at the low end. Which experts are right then? Why are we seeing only results from the ends of the spectrum. Why don’t I see how Sweden is doing, or Africa? Why the same 6-7 places over and over and over to push an agenda? Just give me news, right? Can you still do that at any level, media? What is your value?

On the illegal Latino problem, it’s massive. It’s a huge problem that should be fixed. Should have been fixed 50 years ago. It causes employment and tax problems every year. It brings so little benefit compared to it’s cost. The primary supporters just want more Democrat votes and don’t care who it costs to get them. Maybe a wall wouldn’t help but it sure looks like some Democrat governors would use one if they had it. Mexico didn;t bring this problem here but it brinsg thousands of problems every year. If we want to protect our country, shouldn’t we start to enforce our borders? Control our airports? Decouple from the Chinese? Return our critical medical supply systems back home? Shouldn’t this be a lesson, instead of just another lost opportunity?

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Okay that clears it up
It sounded like you were blaming undocumented people for the entry of the virus

No surprise to anyone, but I don’t think trump has done a good job, that’s pretty consistent with everything I’ve ever said about trump. but I’ve been avoiding posting anything about it in response….mostly bc I’m just tired of the debates on the subject

I think the “issues”, and I’m using that word begrudgely, with undocumented people are separate from the issues with this virus and I’m not comfortable talking about my differences with others on that issue in the same breath that I talk about the coronavirus

I think they are just must different things – so I don’t really want to invite that discussion or participate in it, bc I know I have a much different point of view as a lot of people on it, and once I get started, it’s hard to get me to stop….

In terms of Cuomo, I think everyone’s screwed up a little. But Cuomo, in my view, is a better model than deblasio or trump. I follow his lead before the other two. Did he wait too long to take aggressive action? – yeah I think so.

Point taken – everyone has screwed up. But I think it’s legitimate criticism to look at how your leaders deal with things and judge them for it, and just bc some one else is mentioned, it’s really not a defense. So everyone screwing up, doesn’t mean we can’t say one particular person screwed up (or screwed up more)

If people don’t point out mistakes made by our leaders, why should they stop making them? Whether they are defensive or not about the criticism. Whether the criticism is politically motivated or not. It’s serves a purpose in a representative form of govt. That form of govt needs feedback.

      • New Age says:

        Piggy,

I agree with that. I don’t mind the criticism and I think it’s deserved. I’d like to look further at people and agencies we usually wave off though. The CDC gets over $7 billion yearly. Why was the response so poor?

Trump doesn’t know anything about disease and while he pontificates, I really want to know why the ones that should know more did so poorly. He’s an idiot on this topic (I know your thoughts on other ones) and he should talk less about it to cover that ignorance. We can crap on Trump but I hope we go further and either fix problems with our responses and within the CDC itself or at the very least, discuss the need for it.

I think our bureaucracy is way too large. It’s too easy for bad things and incompetence to be hidden. It’s too easy to hide pork and shady dealings.

I used undocumented aliens because there is a prevailing thought in some circles that borders, laws, and regulations shouldn’t count for some people. That just because they are trying to help their families, it’s ok. This disaster should reinforce that a controlled border, is a safe border. That laws are there to prevent bad things.

I think Cuomo’s ok. He’s a smooth politician, very smart, willing to say he’s wrong. I really don’t like the idea of families of the ruling elite. It’s bad enough that our politicians flaunt their power but for generations of them to do so reminds me of Old Europe. That wasn’t a good system. I didn’t like Bushes and Kennedys dominating our political landscape as they profited from their own special rules.

  66. Tim Knight says:

    Krishna – I can sum this up very easily . . .

The people who hate Trump hang on his every word and dissect everything he says and find faults in almost everything he says.

The people who support Trump have learned not to listen to everything he says because we know he’s annoying, narcissistic and a blowhard. It’s tiring seeing media outlet after outlet criticize Trump and seeing people in social media pick out the dumb things he says. Overall I still believe he does a good job despite all the negative media coverage and the Democrats so desperately trying to get him out of office. I also recall in January the Democrats trying so hard to impeach Trump and spending exhaustive effort to do so, not one of them spent any effort on the Corona Virus.

I have to turn on Fox News at least once a day just to hear a different opinion because everyone else is like in sync. It’s so predictable already.

    • Tim Knight says:

I’ve always gravitated to CNN during emergency situations etc., I like their coverage with that. But all of a sudden it will get to a panel discussion and I start hearing the Trump bashing and then I put something other than news on. It’s fuckin annoying and blatantly bias. I don’t watch FOX News really ever unless I stop on a segment as I’m surfing. I know they do their best to support Trump and the GOP going in so what’s the point?

It’s sad that the news is so blatantly bias. It’s also stupid.

    • dbolt48 says:

It’s beyond stupid now. Forget the border wall, people have put up their own walls. Sad.

      • The Flying Pig says:

People don’t create or vote for 3rd parties bc they think it will help the party/politician they hate

I personally cant vote for a 3rd party in 2020 (and I have in the past) bc I don’t want trump to win

Trump losing is more important to me now that most of my fundamental beliefs on our political structure…lol

I am sure a lot of independents may see things differently, but for me, because of trump, I’ve shifted heavily on favor of democrats

      • Tim Knight says:

And that choice could be worse with the anti-American sentiment spawning in that party. I think voting for the lesser of two evils is the result of voting stupid in the first place. I can apply actions mean more that words for my friends and family – it makes sense

But for the President, breaching that trust and delivering misinformation, or shooting from the hip, or throwing our red herrings. That matters

Piggy, right now I don’t see any Democrat beating Trump. I originally thought Biden was the Dem’s best chance but it looks like senility is setting in with him. Just like the Republicans put out a poor group against Trump, the Democrats turned around and did the same thing. Cuomo has already said he has no desire to run for president now or ever.

Sanders is too radical left and Biden is 77 years old. Who’s the wildcard?

I voted for Obama his first term because of his words. He spoke well and said all the right things. He delivered none of them. Did the opposite, created racial rifts and disrespect for law enforcement. Trump, on the other hand, is a shit show every time he opens his mouth. But he has delivered, or tried, what he said he would. Words versus actions.

In this circumstance you say he has put out misinformation. I can give you any number of examples where the “experts” were putting out the same information. WHO said travel bans were not good and were actually counterproductive. Media put all kinds of talking heads with PhD’s on the air saying Trump was overreacting, that the virus wasn’t that serious. CDC wasn’t hitting the fire alarm. Controlling the southern border was bad. Etc, etc.

Was the country unprepared? Fuckin’ A, Skippy. Is that Trumps fault? Maybe in a very small part. He did not come into office and immediately look at pandemic preparedness. Of course he was kind of busy with corruption and criminal activity in the DOJ. And then there was that whole baseless impeachment thing. But the Russians!!!

Do any of you Trump haters think that FEMA, HHS, DOJ, you-name -the-agency, got into the state they are in over the last three years? That is what has failed us. Big government.

I will probably agree with you On 3rd parties in any year that’s not 2020…lol

    • Tim Knight says:

Or maybe it’s the perfect time. 😉

Nobody expects extreme changes from a 3rd party, but maybe some middle of the road. Break up the fight, become a moderator… something!

  84. dbolt48 says:

LMAO….if you hate Trump, but excuse Pelosi, Schiff, Waters, Schumer, & the Squad then I’ll never be able to have a sensible political conversation with you. I’d like to see more people stand up and say fuck you to each side when they are pieces of shit, but people can’t seem to bring themselves to do that. That’s what’s wrong with our state of politics today.

  85. pheloniusphish says:

I think we should do away with parties all together. Run on your stances not your party.

I wrote a paper in college that argued that we should legally enfranchie at least 5 parties in every election or at least do away with the 2-party system because it would soon result in …
(this thing we all see now, to be brief).

    I was given an F.
I was accused of being unAmerican.
My legitiimacy as a college student was questioned.
    Even my IQ was doubted.
I was accused of being a pinko soft on communism by the red necks
and I was accused of being a states rightist Confederate by the Bleeding Hearts.

I was right though. I was just too far ahead of my time.
    It was 1969.

    • Phindog says:
