Preseason Finale – Game 3 – Dolphins @ Bengals

This is it folks! Last game of the 2021 Preseason. Coach Flores has already put it out there most starters will sit so this is the opportunity for all those players on the roster bubble to make their case to be on the 53. It’s also a good chance to see what the depth looks like because during a season, injuries always rear their ugly head and you need solid depth to stay ahead during the season.

Jacoby Brissett will most likely see a fair amount of action and it’s important for him to show he knows the offense and can run the team in Tua’s absence. There’s always the question as to whether the Dolphins will carry 2 or 3 QB’s, my guess would be just 2. Reid Sinnett will end up on the PS and give the Dolphins another precious roster spot. Recent moves have made the WR depth much clearer. The Dolphins placed 2nd year WR Lynn Bowden Jr. on IR ending his season. The Dolphins also waived WR’s Robert Foster and Isaiah Ford. Veteran Allen Hurns was placed on IR earlier so the only bodies left are Will Fuller (Inactive Week 1), DeVante Parker, Albert Wilson, Jaylen Waddle,Preston Williams, Mack Hollins, Jakeem Grant, Kirk Merritt and Malcolm Perry. 9 WR’s , 6 for week 1. One has to go and I feel it will be Malcolm Perry. WIll the big bodied and oft injured Williams hold off equally as large and ace ST’s player Mack Hollins? I don’t think so. Merritt has had a strong preseason so he has a leg up, but there is still game 3 for Perry to change that. However, it looks very much like we’ll have Parker, Wilson, Waddle, Hollins, Grant and Merritt for the first game against the Patriots.

I expect us to carry 4 TE’s, Gesicki, Shaheen, Long and probably Smythe due to his blocking abilities. Myarick could steal his spot, and who knows, maybe it’s Shaheen that gets cut, but it sure seemed like they like Shaheen. Cethan carter also earn as a spot as an H-back/FB/TC, or maybe Long goes on IR because of his injury.

At RB, I think we’ll carry 4 into the regular season, the clear choices right now are the first 3, Myles Gaskin, Salvon Ahmed and Malcolm Brown. After that it’s a real tossup as to whether 2021 7th RD pick rookie Gerrid Doaks makes it, or veteran Patrick Laird or a surprise like Jordan Scarlett. Game 3 will probably have a lot to say about which guy makes it!

On the O-line, still not decided (as far as we know), but I’m sticking with my prediction of Jackson-Kindley-Deiter-Hunt-Eichenberg. Still possible that either Eichenberg starts at LG over Kindley and Jesse Davis starts at RT but I believe it will be the former. Jermaine Eluemunor has also been released. You have to figure we carry at least if not 9 OL so the aforementioned 5 plus Davis, Skura, Little and either Coleman or Pankey.

On defense, despite not seeing a lot of Jaelan Phillips, I still think he’s going to be a major part of our defense. AVG looks ready to be right where he left off last season, and that’s a good thing. I really love our depth at LB with AVG, Baker, McKinney, Phillips, Roberts, Eguavoen, Riley, Biegel. Not sure if Griffin makes that final cut, especially since Roberts has been activated.

On the DL we have the usual Wilkins-Davis-Ogbah, followed by Sieler, Jenkins, Butler and Strowbridge. More than likely that last spot will be up for grabs between Jason Strowbridge and Jonathan Ledbetter, unless we carry 8 DL, which is possible. Benito Jones is still in the mix but Tyshun Render was moved to LB where he faces tough odds against the previously mentioned group.

The Dolphins strong secondary will be led by All-Pro Xavien Howard and Byron Jones at CB along with Nik Needham who refuses to give ground to 2020 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene. Good on Needham, who just keeps working hard! The safety group looks Rowe and impressive rookie Jevon Holland, followed by vet Jason McCourty, Clayton Fejedelem (ST’s ace), Brandon Jones (2020 3rd RD pick), Jamal Perry and Nate WIlliams. Probably 4 will make it here among the safeties with 6 CB’s. Perry and Williams are as good as gone leaving perhaps a battle between Fejedelem and Jones or we carry 5 safeties. CB’s should be Howard, Jones, Needham, Igbinoghene, Coleman, McCourty who can play both CB/S

Special teams will be standout PK Jason Sanders as well as newly acquired P Michael Palardy. Jakeem Grant and Jaylen Waddle as well as Noah Igbinoghene will handle the return duties. Long snapper Blake Ferguson returns.

There will always be some surprise cuts, some of the players I have making the roster won’t and some I have being cut won’t get cut. It’s fun to see how things shape up, let’s just hope that injuries don’t make these decisions for the team.

GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Totally offended the Herd @ Navy didn’t make the list of good games to watch today. 😉

  2. bookman11 says:

Judging from this game, looks like Alabama has another schedule against soft teams

  3. ocalarob says:

I know, let’s go out and root for the same team to win every year. why? because all the talent wants to get recruited to go there to make it rich in the NFL! We can all just load a couple of teams.
    I can’t wait!!!
    Oh what fun it is!

College football sucks, it’s not a level playing field,

    • The Flying Pig says:

The rest of Alabama’s ranked teams are all in the SEC (leu, UF, TExas A&M)

I honestly don’t think any team from any other conference would win vs those three

When Alabama signed a contract to play Miami, UM was on the rise, so I don’t fault Alabama for that

But there’s a real problem in college football that a team like Alabama can have such a monopoly in recruiting

I really hate that College football has turned into this

    • CavalierKong says:

Agreed, why would I want to watch the NCAA Alabama championship game every year?

The Tide has been in 7 of the last 10 championship games and has won 5 of them.

  4. ocalarob says:

should be rules, recruit kids within your area

  5. ocalarob says:

last 6 national champs were alabama or clemson, we can throw one in for LSU,
same teams win every year, is there something wrong with this picture?

it doesn’t seem to sporty to me.

  6. ocalarob says:

Nick Saban is a football genus LOL, Barny Fife could run that squad!

  7. bookman11 says:

Was this an issue when UCLA was winning all those BB titles? Not sure this is an exclusive thing now.

    • The Flying Pig says:

I mean the thing is when UCLA was doing that college basketball wasn’t really getting a lot of attention, and they
Were the only team on Tv, so they were able to recruit all the top talent

  8. ocalarob says:

Saban looks serious on that sideline

    what a crock!

  9. bookman11 says:

I hate Savanna, but hi IS the reason Bama is this good

  10. bookman11 says:

    Saban

    • stangerx says:

Hate Saban too. One is how he lied to us about the exit. But bigger reason was reading about the memo put out in Davie about how employees were not allowed to make eye contact with him. Could only be cause he wanted that out…… and who does that?

      • CavalierKong says:

The story about him ignoring and stepping over the player in distress to get to his office is what did it for me.

      • CavalierKong says:

Then his reasoning was something along the lines of “The captain can never show weakness” or some crap like that.

      • stangerx says:

He couldn’t deal with the NFL cause he preferred to be GOD. Think was simple as that.

  11. CavalierKong says:

LOL, terrible PI call. If anything it was the Miami player.

  12. olddolphan says:

IN ABOUT 2 HOURS AND 20 MINUTES FAU’s football team plays the mighty Florida Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. The odds makers have UF favored by 24 and 1/2 points. Apparently they are expecting a repeat of the ALABAMA-MIAMI mismatch. THAT SAID, not one person (including a hard core Gator fan) would give me the spread for a small wager. Maybe they remember the last time these two played in Gatorville when FAU, then a 29 and 1/2 ‘dog. lost in OVERTIME??!! ANYWAY, I may be glad I didn’t put a wager on this one.
    ———–
MRS. OD is glad to see me wearing my “FAU CLASS OF 69” T-shirt, which I ONLY wear during the Shula Bowl Game OR when we are playing another team from the state of Florida.

GOOOOOOO-O-O OWLS!!!!!!!! (See it live at 7:30 on Ch. 611 on DIRECTV, the SEC Network).

  13. Tim Knight says:

Piggy, what was bringing you to Delaware?

  14. bookman11 says:

Tim, can you make it to the Fest?
Is there any talk of a Fest for the NE folks?

  15. olddolphan says:

12 minutes to kickoff. Late running game on SEC Network may cause me to miss the first few minutes of this game.

    GO OWLS!!

  16. The Flying Pig says:

If Tua doesn’t work out we can draft Taulia

  17. Tim Knight says:

Just saw in the distant sky what looked like a plane falling from the sky. Not sure exactly what area it was over, but never saw anything like that. There was a long orange trail that may have been a piece of it slowly descending. Anyone hear anything about this?

  18. wyoming85 says:

Sounds like a bunch of whinny fuckers on the blog today!

  19. Krishna says:

It’s not about Alabama, it’s more about the quality of the SEC. I believe Bear Bryant won 4 national titles back in the day. They have been winning for a long time. Used to be FSU and UM were top programs along with UF. Florida football was pretty awesome at one point. Players opt for the SEC if they can because it’s probably one of the best conferences where you hone your skills to get to the NFL.

Also, a If there was a playoff of at least 8 teams, you might see different results at who wins the NCAA football title. The top 4 teams is a bullshit way of determining a college football title, imo.

Clemson seems to be a good program but doesn’t play anyone in their conference. They play two games a year that are meaningful if their lucky. First, they have to win the semi-final, if they do, they get a chance to play another good team. Not much to hurdle in their season.

OK and TX will have a tough time in the SEC, imo. They only played one tough game a year in their conference and it was between the two of them…..lol. Now, Big 12 is talking about bringing in BYU, Cincinnati, Central Florida, and Houston. This conference has taken a big hit….lol.

The Big 10 is probably the most competitive after the SEC and I don’t even know what to say about the Pac 12.

If there was a playoff, I would still guess the SEC might dominate, but schools that play in weak conferences might have a better chance and Alabama might not be the one always representing the SEC.

  20. wyoming85 says:

    Congrats Herd!

  29. Krishna says:

Georgia just finished off Clemson. Now Clemson can go beat UM and FSU and the rest of their puff conference….lol.

    • olddolphan says:

KRISH: The ACC saw BOTH of their top 2 ranked teams bite the dust when Clemson and North Carolina lost this weekend. Looks UNLIKELY that an ACC team will make it to the Final Four in college football this season.

      • Krishna says:

That’s right, OD! I just mentioned NC earlier too. They are in the ACC. lmao….

        Oh well, it’s Alabama’s fault.

Sorry about your owls…..lol, Did they cover the spread?

      • Krishna says:

I see you answered my question below. Thanks.

  30. Tim Knight says:

So far it seems like Wilson and Parker will be available week 1. Add Waddle, Williams, Hollins and Grant along with the TEs and backs and we’ve got some really good quickness, speed and receiving skills. We’ll have to wait until week 2 for Fuller.

  31. olddolphan says:

TIM: You’re not quite right when you say we NEVER WIN THERE in New England. Miami’s actually defeated the Pats in New England 18 times. Overall, Miami leads the rivalry 57 wins to 54 for New England, with both teams winning roughly two-thirds of their home games in this rivalry.
    ——————
WELL at least FAU covered the 24 and 1/2 point spread in tonight’s 35-14 loss to FLORIDA. Gators dominated BOTH lines of scrimmage and clearly deserved to win. But it was interesting to see Gators head coach Dan Mullin tell his QB to throw bombs during UF’s last possession in an attempt to beat the spread.

Time to walk the greyhound and hit the sack. Y’all enjoy your 3-day weekend!

  33. i predict Waddle will have a huge game against the cheatriots, his combination of speed, route running, elusiveness, and field vision are elite

It’s GAMEDAY!! In one week Bitches!

  35. ocalarob says:

I just wonder why they haven’t addressed Mike Gesicki’s contract yet?

could it be that he’s a blocking liability and telegraphs the offenses intent?

going into his contract year, and how the posters around here think he’s god.

you would think they would have him at the bargaining table to ensure they don’t lose this god.
