2022 Season – Week 12 – Texans @ Dolphins

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you! So far, Thanksgiving has given us a split, the Bills outlasted the Lions on Thanksgiving Day, while the Patriots fell to the Vikings. The very same Vikings we saw at Hard Rock for the Fest and came away unimpressed as our 3rd string and then second string QB’s, Skylar Thompson and Teddy Bridgewater respectively, made easy work of the Vikings defense. We lost the game, but the refs and our mistakes were the culprits as we amassed lots of yardage and too many penalties, ultimately keeping us from scoring. Nonetheless, the Vikes are a perfect 3-0 against the AFC East, having defeated us, the Bills and now the Patriots.

Big hero in Miami Dolphins lore, Laremy Tunsil returns to Hard Rock, the man, the legend of trade compensation with draft picks that apparently never stop coming. The Texans come in to Miami with 1-8-1 record, having tied the Colts opening day, 20-20, and defeating the Jaguars 13-6 in Week 5. Since then, no wins. Talk about a trap game, the Dolphins coming back rested from their BYE week playing a team with nothing to play for, perhaps only the #1 pick in the draft in 2023. However, they have a cushion at the moment with the next closest team being 2 games ahead of them, so they can win one without worry of losing the first pick. On the other hand, the Texans have made a change at QB this week, pulling starter Davis Mills, and replacing him with backup QB Kyle Allen, formerly of the Redskins and Panthers. Statistically, Allen is a better QB than Mills, but this will be his first game action of the season, as Mills has played and finished every game this season.

Truth is, I’m not concerned about the Texans, my only concern is the Miami Dolphins. If we play our game on our offense, the Texans are going to have a helluva time keeping up with us. I also think our defense who will be rested and had time to heal should be fired up to try and maintain their lead atop the AFC East. This is not the Dolphins of the past 2 decades, this is a different team. This team has a swagger, and if the defense can get sorted out, it can be a team that no one will want to face in the playoffs. Big if there though, so far the defense has been poor to mediocre. We’re still allowing over 24 PPG, 22nd in the NFL. Last season, the defense allowed 21.9 PPG, good for exactly midpack, 16th. The addition of LB Bradley Chubb has already shown dividends. We did lose DE Emmanuel Ogbah, and a combination of Zach Sieler, Andrew Van Ginkel, Jaelan Phillips and possibly others, such as Trey Flowers if he gets healthy enough to return. Ogbah wasn’t really healthy all season, so we never really got the best out of him anyway. Next man up!

Speaking of next man up, that’s what we’ve been doing in our secondary all season. We’ve been hit hard in the secondary, as CB Byron Jones has yet to play a down for us. We’ve lost S Brandon Jones for the season. CB Xavier Howard has been playing with groin injuries all season and I’m hoping that the week off helped there. DB’s Kader Kohou and Keion Crossen have both been injured at different times during the season, leaving us with 1st RD bust DB Noah Igbinoghene, who actually got to play hero with an INT that sealed the game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Iggy actually had a couple of games where it seemed like he might be catching on, but he’s once again been relegated to depth with Kohou and Crossen, and even long time vet Justin Bethel ahead of him on the depth chart. Safeties Eric Rowe, Clayton Fejedelem and Verone McKinley III have all tried to replace Brandon Jones, but he’s a dynamic player, physical hitter and expert blitzer we sorely miss.

Texans RB Dameon Pierce has been the workhorse of the offense, and really the lone bright spot. Pierce just keeps chugging away with 780 yards on 175 carries for a very respectable 4.5 YPC. WR Brandin Cooks in the Texans biggest threat for their aerial attack. He has 39 receptions for 461 yards and 1 TD. This offense has not been effective, and I’d like to think our defense will keep it that way. Of course, QB Kyle Allen may come out aggressive, more so than his counterpart Davis Mills who had only 11 TD’s. I’d like to see us dominated this game. I wasn’t at the rainy Fest game when the Dolphins blew out the Texans 43-26, but I’d like something similar, or even more severe, perhaps less points on their side. No matter what, we must win this game to stay on top!

Good write Mike! I totally agree. We should dominate on both sides. I would like to see us pull away early, get up several scores and be able to limit snaps on everyone. I also want to see Sanders have a great game. He needs to heading into the stretch.

If Mostert is healthy we may run for 200 yards in this game

    • The Flying Pig says:

      Texans canโ€™t stop the run

    • bailbondmike says:

He has been out last 2 practices with a sore knee. I hope they would rest him a bit. Limit his touches.

Though they have held him out of a lot of practices before. Will know when we see who is active. I would hope this game goes the way we want and see our #3 RB get a good # of touches.

  4. ukfinfan says:

Time for a bit of โšฝ boys and girls.

Going to miss the start, but let’s hope it’s a good game and may the best team win!

  5. The Flying Pig says:

  6. The Flying Pig says:

Are you guys following the Tua hater tournament brackets

  7. Rhino says:

Bills with their “23 seconds remaining” bullshit kind of ruined my morning … but it DOES validate why Lions gave us a tough game a few weeks ago. We’ll just have to take care of the Bills ourselves!!

Sunday I am cheering for Titans over Bengals mainly because Titans still have Eagles and Cowboys on their schedule while we may need to Cheer for Bengals when they play KC and/or Buffalo. Clearly, Fins need to handle business but “who to cheer for” is just a side bet, or a ‘big picture what if’. I don’t think Bengals catch Ravens for division, so if we have to have tie breaks it would be in the wild card brackets.

  8. steveccnv says:

Hill isnโ€™t just on pace to break the single-season receiving record, but heโ€™s also averaging an absurd 3.6 yards per route run โ€” a record in the PFF era โ€” and has caught 60% of his contested targets this season. There isnโ€™t a defender in the league who can match up with Hill one-on-one, and so any attempt to take him away has to be done schematically, which can be countered by Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel and his playcalling.

This is why I don’t care about stats

Is it better to have a player that other teams don’t scheme against, but has more yards or the player that’s schemed against?

We know Hill and Waddle are dynamic, I don’t need to see stats for them, others will take care of business, when they’re bottled up, why we can’t be stopped

  9. steveccnv says:

As long as Allen is hurt Bills aren’t that dynamic, they looked worse than us all around yesterday

  10. steveccnv says:

First question deals with Raheem Mostert’s status related to his knee injury and McDaniel says that, while he doesn’t want to rule him out, calls it “an uphill battle” for him to play against Houston.

No reason to play Mostert Sunday

  11. bailbondmike says:

Rivalry weekend should produce some good college games this weekend.

Going to check out the freshman QB for UNC next at 2:30 vs NC State.

  12. New Age says:

Good article Mike. I don’t see how they beat us but anything is possible. I also want to see the defense start to improve even with the injuries. I have no clue why Jones hasn’t played a snap this year, but he was a wasted investment that will be corrected next year. Unfortunately, I can’t help feeling the same about Iggy No Pop. Let’s see if Grier can work some DB magic in next year’s draft.

  13. stangerx says:

Great write Mike E. It’s been amazing how a lot of low-level name DBs have stepped in for the Jones brothers. I’m putting it on Madison and Surtain. Now that we have them back, hope we keep them for a good long while.

  14. The Flying Pig says:

If any of you had this on your Turkey yesterday, itโ€™s a good idea to see a doctor today

  15. The Flying Pig says:

  16. manitobafinfan says:

Ah yes the Texans Fest game .. such great memories of Rock crying in the rain ๐Ÿ˜ญ

I expect the bye week has allowed Chubb to get fully up to speed and I expect a BEATDOWN of epic proportionsโ€ฆ.

  17. stangerx says:

“Mostert was at practice Friday, dressed in uniform.” Assume that means pads as well.

  18. ukfinfan says:

Honours even. Impressed with USA. Great energy, high press, skill levels good and well organised. Tough game. Pulisic hit the bar for US and Kane missed a header in added time. Some tired legs after that

    • The Flying Pig says:

Iโ€™m pretty sure you guys are in the next stage with todayโ€™s draw

We have to beat Iran now

      • ukfinfan says:

Yep – we still control our own destiny but Wales will be a tough game – they hate England and love beating us.

  19. randydolfan1947 says:

WELL, as our friends across the pond might say,”It was a bloody bore, I say!”
    NIL-NIL. ZIP-ZIP. ZERO-ZERO.
This much anticipated soccer match between England and team USA was a SNOOZER SUPREME!
    ———————————-
TRIED REALLY HARD to like soccer. We even had season tix one year to the MLS’s Columbus Crew when we lived in Ohio. I remember a 3-game stretch in which the only goal scored was an OWN GOAL by the opposition goalie!!
    ———————————
WELL 4 years from now I’ll probably tune in ONE World Cup contest and be utterly disappointed (or BORED) again.
    ——————————–
WELL another sport is also being offered today. It’s what some in Europe call “American Football.” Others, including those in Munich, Germany where over 700,000 tickets were ordered for a stadium that seats over 70,000, called it “entertaining!”

    Time to get entertained.

    • stangerx says:

You grow up it and you do. I think the players should be allowed to pick up the ball and run with it, but thats how Rugby came about. American Football too.

    • ukfinfan says:

Patriots 10 – Jets 3 …………. thriller in the big Apple.
Lions 15 – Packers 9 ………….. edge of the seat stuff
      Bears 7 – Commanders 12 ………. fetch the defibrillator

And that’s AFTER the NFL CHANGED THE RULES to make it EASIER TO SCORE.

Fair play if you don’t like soccer, but there are a lot more soccer fans globally than gridiron so it can’t be too bad surely? I actually prefer football American-style, even though I have a season ticket to 23 home games for my hometown lower league soccer team.

And assuming you can accept games like the above, and one-sided blow-outs may actually not be total entertainment, at least bad soccer games only last 90 minutes – not 3 hours!

There are 2 sides to every story OD ๐Ÿ˜‰

      • The Flying Pig says:

        I love it

What I really love is the way there are no commercials for a half

        Itโ€™s just continuous play

What I donโ€™t like is that the end of regulation is a mysteryโ€ฆlol

      • bookman11 says:

        Well played

  20. randydolfan1947 says:

    JOLLY WELL, my friend!!
I’ve made an honest attempt to like soccer. But, for the most part, I found it to be dull and boring. And, as far as lasting 90 minutes, that’s just flat-out not true. American PRO football has 60 minutes of playing time but, allowing for halftime and commercials, often lasts 3 hours. Soccer, too, has plenty of commercials and a LOT MORE time wasted by players rolling in pain from fake injuries. Indeed, I WILL give soccer the edge when it comes to “acting.”

WHEN the MLS greatly exceeds the audience of the NFL on this side of the pond, please let me know. AS for the rest of the world preferring soccer, I have no problem at all with that.

There are actually more than 2 sides to every story. May we all be free to pick and choose our sources of entertainment as we wish.

NOW let me tell you about ice hockey . . . .

  21. Mike E. says:

Went axe throwing with the family today. Man, is that fucking fun! We had a great time. If you’ve never done it I highly recommend trying it

  22. Mike E. says:

Looks like Mostert is most likely a no go this Sunday. Wilson will probably have a huge day!

  23. Ken says:

  24. randydolfan1947 says:

MANITOBA; I HOPE YOU’RE RIGHT with your prediction of an “Epic Meltdown!” I’d sure like to see the Dolphins put a 56-10 ass whipping on somebody for a change. But something’s telling me this game will be close and competitive for the first half. But, like you, I believe Miami will get there motors moving FULL THROTTLE in the 3rd period and win going away by something like 37-13.

Could some kind person please add my 37-13 prediction to “Howie’s List?” My attempts at cut and paste have not succeeded.

    Thank you. And GOOOOO FINS!!

  25. Mike E. says:

Piggy – no bacon was consumed whilst axe throwing. They don’t serve food. ๐Ÿคฃ

  26. The Flying Pig says:

There are a few places in Brooklyn that do it

  46. CavalierKong says:

This might have already been posted; I reposted because I recall some of the conversations last year about how much do we actually run RPO, and I love how he explains how sometimes it looks like an RPO, but it is really straight play action, other times it looks like RPO, but it’s a straight run call, and that we use the disguise of RPO as another element to get the defense on its heels.

I was never a huge fan of black but I would love these alternates

If the nfl was a little more flexible with allowing alternates we might get something like this

  51. mf13ss says:

Tua currently leads the NFL (#1) in 15 of 18 QB PFR statistical leaderboards, #2 in two others, and #3 in another. He also has the fewest INTs thrown in the NFL of 165 attempts or greater with only 3. He’s also the least sacked QB in the NFL of 248 pass attempts or greater with only 8.

Hands down, if the season were to end today, Tua should unanimously be voted the NFL MVP. We’ve never lost a game this year that he didn’t finish. Seriously, we are UNDEFEATED this year when Tua starts and finishes and he’s the reason we’re the current #2 seed in the entire AFC.

  57. CavalierKong says:

Interesting take on the throwbacks. I’m not sure I buy into the economics of that theory though. I kinda figure if a person is going to buy a Dolphins jersey, they are going to buy a Dolphins jersey.

And if we switched back, couldn’t you then sell the current logo as the new throwback and get the same economic effect? There are people that would still buy it because they like the new logo, and more people would buy the throwbacks because it’s now the current logo (I hope that makes sense as written, lol). Seems to me it would even out, but maybe their numbers people say different.

I thought the article was going to be more about the cost to rebrand everything, and why do it when the current bottom line looks good, but he kind of throws that out in the first couple of pargraphs.

Kong – I think there are people that will always buy new jerseys, no matter what they are. If people really like the jerseys, more people will buy them. Seems undeniable that the throwbacks are a fan fave so I don’t see any way they wouldn’t sell more of them. I mean people want jerseys that look good and they also want the new players, so they will buy them

Piggy, You donโ€™t wear pants , so how do you give up on something that you donโ€™t believe in to begin with? ๐Ÿ˜†๐Ÿ•

    • The Flying Pig says:

      That is the cycle

      I donโ€™t wear pants – I donโ€™t believe in them – I donโ€™t wear them – and I donโ€™t believe in them

I donโ€™t know which came first

Is USA 0-0-2 in World Cup?
    WT friggin’ F is that?
Just skip the games on the field and go right to the fight at the bar.

Is that record not guaranteed to keep soccer from becoming popular in the US?

With all we’ve heard from MM about the team coming out flat and how close the games have been against some of the leagues worst teams, hard to believe this is a close game
