Game Wrap Up with the Little Prawn: Dolphins @ Redskins

A20337 Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus jumping

Okay, I can’t hear what the Little Prawn is saying, but he does recognize that you might not be leaping out of the sea after the Dolphins win in week 1.  The feeling after the 17-10 win on Sunday is – the Miami Dolphins have a lot to work on.

MorrisCarry

(The Little Prawn makes a Squeaking Sound that is barely audible)

I don’t know what the Little Prawn is saying.  But he sounds angry.  The Dolphins gave up 121 yards to Alfred Morris in the game.   They gave up 161 total rushing yards in the game.  Ouch.  Not what most Dolfans expected.

It affected the entire game.  Before you knew it the first half was over and the time of possession was heavily in the Redskins favor.  Speaking of Time of Possession, the Redskins held the ball 37:54 to the Dolphins 22:06.

Phillips Sack

1 sack for the Dolphins!  Just 1 sack.  Jordan Phillips played early and subbing for Suh made an instant impact.  In this photo Prawn points out that Cousins didn’t just slip on a banana peel.

WakeCelebvRedskins

It’s not that the pass rush was completely ineffective.  There was some pressure on Cousins.  In this photo Wake celebrates a sack…which did not count.  Jamar Taylor was called for holding on the same play.

(The Little Prawn throws down his stick in anger)

RishardTD copy

Cheer up Prawny,  Rishard Matthews and Tanny would not let the Dolphins go into halftime scoreless.

These two continue to take advantage of coming in to the league together.  Matthews caught 4 passes for 34 yards and this TD.

Tannehill’s numbers weren’t bad.  He was 22 of 24 for 226 yards and 1 TD.  But some shellfish think he held the ball a little too long in some situations.  The Redskins caused a near comical sack fumble in the 3rd quarter.  I will spare you the photo.

Miami Dolphins tight end Jordan Cameron (84) catches a pass for a first down in front of Washington Redskins free safety Trenton Robinson (34) during the second half of an NFL football game Sunday, Sept. 13, 2015, in Landover, Md. (AP Photo/Evan Vucci)

(The Little Prawn makes a squeaking sound that is barely audible)

Okay Okay Prawny.  It wasn’t just old chemistry.  There was new chemistry too.  Like Cameron and Tanny.  Cameron was a big part of the offense.  He led the Dolphins in receiving yards with 73 receiving yards.

Cameron made tough catches look easy.  The guy is a natural pass catcher.  And he better be.  The Dolphins other tight end, Dion Sims, suffered a nasty concussion in the first half. It looked worse than it was.  Lets hope Sims is ready to go again soon.

LandryTD2

So the defense was off.  The offense was off.  How are we going to win?

Oh yeah, just get the ball to Landry somehow.  The irony is most of us thought the special teams was the weakness of the team going into the game.

Andrew Franks made his only field goal of the game.  Matt Darr averaged over 43 yards per punt and the Dolphins would take the lead in the game on  Jarvis Landry punt return.

Yeah, you are not going to catch Juice…

McCainInt

Actually Prawny reminds us to give some credit to the 2nd half defense.  The Redskins didn’t score in the 2nd half.  Not even a field goal.

Brice McCain made the interception of the century on the sideline after the Dolphins took the lead.  That interception preserved the win.  Good job Brice!  The Dolphins defense looked much better in the 2nd half.

At the end of the day even though Kirk Cousins had the help of an effective running game from the first snap of the game, he passed for less than 200 yards and threw 2 interceptions.  So don’t be so hard on the defense this week.

Some of you are reminded of the past as soon as you see anything remotely bad happen in a game, and I understand why, but it’s not the same team. Maybe the result will be the same, but every single time I read: “That’s what we heard after the Cleveland game last year” I think, “so?”. I think that because what happened last year has no relevance whatsoever to what happens this year, so I just don’t see the point in constantly rehashing it.

Anyway, some are reviving the negative/positive debate, and while I’m not surprised to see it, I’m tired of us choosing up sides after every game -win or lose. I saw a team that didn’t play great but still got a win. Patriot fans see that all the time too, and so do Browns fans. It doesn’t mean much other than we’re 1-0 and ready to move on. I don’t believe this is deja vu all over again, but if that’s what some of you are having I guess I can understand why.

Anyway, moving on, I enjoyed this little tidbit about the gambling houses taking a bath this weekend:

“The underdog Giants covered against the Cowboys in a 27-26 loss, helping the books, but the damage had already been done earlier in the day, when the most popular public favorites on the board — the Green Bay Packers and Miami Dolphins — both covered.

At William Hill, 80 percent of the money wagered on the Green Bay-Chicago game was on the Packers, who covered as 6.5-point favorites in a 31-23 victory. The Bears are 2-12 straight-up and 3-11 against the Packers since acquiring quarterback Jay Cutler in 2009.

The Dolphins, who were 4-point favorites over Washington, attracted 77 percent of the money at William Hill and covered in a 17-10 win.”

Real quick (for me) synopsis of the game.

We got out fundamentaled. Skins executed better than us, they tackled better, they balanced their offense making them harder to predict. We had the talent to over come and a defense that while sloppy in the first half hunkered down in the second. We definately got a break from the ST. We were extremely sloppy both getting penalties and how we played in the red zone. In any season you have games you look like shit and you hope you can just find a way to win, we had one of those. I am going to try to do a freeze frame review of the game tonight and put down some game evaluations, focusing primarily on the OL/LB/CB play which i found to be hit or miss most the game, but if i see anything else that looks particularly good or bad ill hit on it too. I could probably do this and submit it for you guys to post if you want, and if so who should i send it to?

I know I can’t possibly comprehend the “how’s and why’s” of signing players one day, and then cutting them the next, but we seem to have done that with a few players already. Logan Thomas, Jonas Gray etc . . . Do they talk to these players before they sign them? If so, what happens in 2-5 days that tells you that you need to cut them? Strange business . . .

jahn, to be honest the positive vibe ‘we are a different better team’ is the same as before also. so i dont see the point in constantly saying this year is gonna be different.

my whole point is. the hype vs reality, the past vs future. all of it, it is all the same every year but that is why we are here, to have fun with it, talk about it, bust balls some on it. bottom line is know matter how one deals with it, is we are all dolphin fans. it is why we are all here

if we all looked at it the exact same way this place would be like watching roseann barr undress……..eye gauging painful.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im taking a really close look at the game tonight to see what exactly the issue is. I know they schemed for Suh pretty damn well, they let his aggressiveness take himself out of plays a lot. Some of the things i saw live just looked like they executed a plan to take him out of the equation very well. They doubled him alot oc/og og/ot depending on where they were running, and we didnt get much out of the other DL as far as closing out the other gap inside. I know that Sheppard did not play consistently well either. A lot of it though was just fundamentals, they didnt tackle well. When the skins hit our carrier, most the time they took them down, we were missing tackles, sometimes throwing ourselves at the player but really just weak arm tackling that was sloppy.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

        They cut Suh a lot.

The bottom line is this defense held the opponent to 10 points on the road, nothing in the 2nd half. It wasn’t 38-35. LOL

The offense was the culprit, just 10 points. But they did what they had to do late and won the game. Next!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wash. has a punishing running game, and since there’s not a lot of contact during camp they’re a tough opening matchup. Buffalo’s running game isn’t close.

  18. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

I was highly disappointed in Phiblin’s 4th & 1 call from the 12 yard line in the 2nd QTR.
Down 3-0 and playing like crap, and not able to run much at all, why not tie the game there with an easy FG.
It would’ve got Franks his 1st NFL FG, gains a lil confidence and it would have took momentum away from the Skins who were dominating the TOP, but would then look up and see they are tied.

Instead it gave Skins a big defensive win, stole our minute amount of offensive momentum, and then Washington proceeded to march down the field to go up 10-0….I was really SMH and yelling about that yesterday.
Poor coaching, poor timing to go for it at that point…IMO.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

      I disagree

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I have no problem going for it, but don’t run it when we weren’t running well.

The first drive on the 3rd and short Miller missed the whole and ran right into the defender, just like Williams on 4th down. I’m not a fan of Williams running the ball, but I do love him catching it.

  19. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

It’s only Joe if the roster moves are good. If they’re strange or poor it’s the front office acting on their own.

  20. drg's avatar drg says:

    Steve,

Looking like the Brenner/McClendon moves are salary based and due to guarantees on McClendon they want to avoid.

Also they signed a kid off the Philly practice squad to be backup RB and KR.

  21. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

….plus, I’m livid about constantly running from the shotgun. We need more plays from under Center….and we need to commit more to running the ball.!!!
We had 18 rushes (all from the shotgun pretty much) to Washington’s 37 rushes! (that’s why they controlled TOP & should have won too)

  22. drg's avatar drg says:

    Getterdone,

I had no problem with the idea of going for it on 4th and 1, but given our struggles in the short yardage run game it was a poor choice. I would expect we will see a lot of play action or just 5 wide sets on short yardage situations going forward.

  23. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I don’t think we will ever do much running from anything other ban the shotgun on this offense

  24. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

    Steve

Why would you think the HC has more control over the last couple of spots on the 53? I think it’s almost always the GM who makes those decisions, considering only 46 suit up for game day. JMO

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think we should ban the shotgun too Piggy. lol

  26. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

SB & steve, why disagree….we weren’t running the ball well, or throwing well at that point….even if we got the 1st down, what makes you think we keep moving it and score at that point of poor play on offense?
The call..IMO, was to take the easy 3 and tie the game…then Franks booms another KO and pins them back at their 20 with a renewed sense of momentum after a shaky start.

As a HC, you have to be more in the flow of the game here both what’s happening on the field physically, but also as to what’s happening mentally. Emotion is a huge part of the game.

  27. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

drg, I get your point, I like going for it on 4th too, heck who doesn’t, afterall, we all want that TD as fans….but until you know, & have shown that you can run the ball, then I say don’t do it there in that spot.
Regardless if run play action or you go 5 wide….it won’t surprise anyone if they know you can’t run it to begin with.

    • getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Not making that 4th & 1 was a damn 10 point swing….those are hard to overcome and most of the time we wouldn’t have over come it against teams better than the Redskins.

You play fantasy sports right? Churning one or two guys is normal in fantasy football (streaming a few pitchers/hitters on a weekly basis in fantasy baseball is normal). Same logic applies in real franchise management 😛

  31. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Kenny Stills played only 23 snaps in the Dolphins’ Week 1 win over the Redskins, while Rishard Matthews started and played 45.
For now, Stills is Miami’s No. 4 receiver behind Jarvis Landry, Greg Jennings, and Matthews. That’s with first-round pick DeVante Parker’s role sure to grow.

  32. finfanrob's avatar finfanrob says:

  33. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

DeVante Parker played only one snap in the Dolphins’ Week 1 win over the Redskins.
Coach Joe Philbin was asked Monday what he needs to see from Parker before he becomes a meaningful contributor. “That comfort level for everybody, for him for us,” Philbin said. “That rhythm, the anticipation, trust versus certain coverages. He’s moving better and better each time he’s on the field.”

  34. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

    GDP,
Agree with you on game call. Coaching is no different than gambling in any other thing in life (stock market, card games, etc). You take chances when you have to, otherwise you take what the game gives you. Down 0-3 against the Redskins in the 1st half is not anything like being down against a team such as the Packers (who are likely to light up the defense). No need to want 7 pts against a team that has no real firepower on offense; take the 3pts and even the game so that the most you can be down on the next opponent series is 1 score.

Disagree that Damien Williams isn’t a power back. He’s plays bigger than his frame and almost never go backwards when hit. When the holes aren’t there well no back is going to make it through unless he can shift like Barry Sanders or take on an entire defense like Marshawn Lynch lol.

LOL @ Al on both counts. I do play FF, but I don’t really churn the roster all that much. It’s usually during BYE weeks for certain players when a need arises, or maybe if someone opens up some eyes with a great week.

  43. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Thanks Al, glad you agree….I mean it’s always sexy to go for it on 4th down in that spot, but when you’re struggling and still have a Bagel on the scoreboard, ya better not leave sure points on the field. It would have been just a 29-30yd FG for the easy 3 to tie the game. The 10 point swing & being down 2 scores would have broke our back with Phins teams of the past….so maybe we are getting better talent wise to keep fighting till the end.

In addition the Dolphins annually host members of the internet community who run Dolphins sites a full weekend of Dolphins football each season.

  45. Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

RT played alright and did miss some big throws but I thought it was hesitation that was his enemy at times. One near pick 6 came on the heels of a double pump (a big no no making a sideline throw in same direction as pump fake). The toss to Sims was him getting cute trying to throw across his body (threw it like a shotput while rolling left; couldn’t square up right and hurried his delivery). On those kind of throws you just have to aim at a spot in the back of the end zone and not worry about where the receiver is going on his route (aiming at the receiver on his route). The sideline throw to Stills where he was forced out making an attempt sucked as well but that one was a deep roll out and it seemed Stills was a 3rd or 4th option (Tanny was caught looking into the end zone too long and threw late to Stills as a last resort option).

    • Al in MIA's avatar Al in MIA says:

A couple of other throws that were completed also qualified in that category where he got it to his targets but he almost got them killed over the middle leading them into defenders who were going to deliver big shots.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yes. He could have easily had two picks on those plays. Not only did he double pump, but he double pumped staring directly at the receiver who wasn’t more that 10 yards down field.

Right, however the percentage of converting successful 4th & 1’s vs. making short FG’s 30 yards out is a big difference. Even more so when your team is struggling to run the ball as they were there, and then complicate it even more trying to run from the shotgun/spread option…smh

Not sure who discussed how Suh was overpursing but my comment on that is that if he’s 3 yards deep in the backfield and 2 OL are pulled 2-3 yards behind the OL, the LB aren’t doing their jobs if they have a free angle to the QB/RB.

    Jahn,
I don’t think it’s completely based on the past, but rather that we are seeing the same exact problems that plagued this team during the last part of last season (poor run defense, lack of execution on offense, a low amount of rushing attempts). Until they can correct those aspects of their game, then we can only expect more of the same from this team.

““Same old Dolphins!” I must have heard three dozen times Sunday and Monday from friends and acquaintances or by email.

No. Actually, the same old Dolphins might have found a way to lose a game on the road that it trailed 10-0. This team found a way to keep its poise, shore its defense and make enough big, game-turning plays to win.

Quit complaining when there is no real cause.”

lol, you fool. what in the world is wrong with you. you know you have an employee come in to work late every day for a year but they tell you tomorrow should be different, you should give them a raise and make them in charge of the office. the past means absolutely nothing.

  61. D's avatar D says:

Nitpicking the 4th down go for it call is crazy guys. I wasnt a fan of it because we needed the points, but i also get what they thought. They thought it would give us a boost on offense and if it failed our D was good enough to hold them. It wasnt a bad call it was just agressive, something that most of you bitched that Philbin wasnt more of last year.

ill be giving you the low down on that soon, but from what i saw live, he looked pretty good and got down the field on blocks pretty routinely. Ill have to get back to you on the pass pro but the run blocking looked solid.

i agree with you there. nitpicking any single play makes no sense. it isnt one play that wins or loses a game. if they kicked a fg there is no guarantee it would have not been blocked and returned for a td. complain about the game as a whole but i dont think you can pick apart one play

yeah well our offensive deserves all the credit for that.

  67. D's avatar D says:

That TD to Reed they had was a push off too, big time. I think he was stumbling on the play as well but he wasnt falling until Reed gave him the last little shove. They cant review for a missed penaty but it was definitely a push-off

  68. getterdone's avatar getterdone says:

Not nitpicking it per say, just having a discussion on a ‘blog’.
Yeah it would have been great to get the 1st & then score a TD, but what if we still failed to get it into the end zone…we kick the FG anyways.
I’m glad to see Philbin grow more balls and go for it ‘at times’, but IMHO, this seemed like not the best time to go for it, given the circumstances involved, which is key to any decisions….that’s my only gripe.

I look forward to better instances to go for it in the coming games. Ya got to pick and choose your spots, the right spots, cause they only work a third of the time at best.

    • TryPod's avatar Try Pod says:

At the time I thought it was a good call, but after I saw them decide to run for a first I got queasy. After they ran it, I actually vomited- a little.. in my mouth. A little bouché.

And pissed off at the play call!

Jarvis Landry is bad ass. He is one of my favorite players. He plays with unbridled passion and a WILL to win. I love watching him get all amped up. He leaves it all on the field and he pushes his team mates. ONE OF THE BEST PICKS we could have taken. When he pushed those three DB’s 3 yards for the first down yesterday was awesome.

A couple of other throws that were completed also qualified in that category where he got it to his targets but he almost got them killed over the middle leading them into defenders who were going to deliver big shots.

I was joking with the buddy I watched the game with, a few series after Sims got hurt saying stuff like “yup, Cameron I’m gonna kill you now. Juice, it’s your turn to get blind sided..”

That is kind of my thought as well. I did think Suh acted intentionally but it wasn’t the worst thing I ever saw but I thought it would be a potential fine. I was surprised to see the league drop it so quickly. I do think there is some hangover from the Brady decision going on.
