Wedge Scouting Report: Ian Thomas, Indiana

WEDGE IS SPEAKING TO ANOTHER ALIEN AND PUTTING A HEADSET ON HIM

Come here little Gurker….Wedge is going to make you a genius.  I know everyone says Gurkers are the dumbest aliens in the universe – but not you after I put this smart gear on you!

Gurkelmindcontrol

Oh hey there Dolfans.   What?  Oh this little Gurker…It’s not really a “make you smart” head gear.  It’s more like a brain scrambler.

5 minutes from now, this Gurker won’t know what Galaxy he is in.  This headgear scrambles everything.

scramble swtich

I imagine that is the kind of confusion a versatile tight end can cause a defense to experience.  Like Indiana’s Ian Thomas

IanThomas2

THE POSITIVES:  Ian Thomas has the frame and physical stature to play tight end at the NFL level.  At 6’5, 250 pounds, this tight end is going to pose problems in the NFL in the red zone.

Thomas also has pretty good speed.  His 4.74 40 yard dash was 5th among tight ends at the combine.  Add that to his 3rd highest vertical jump and 2nd longest long jump and you get the picture.  Thomas is a pretty good athlete.

Thomas can separate from defenders and fine soft spots in the defense quickly.  Thomas also demonstrates extraordinary body control, good hands and has great strength.  But there is something else about Thomas worth mentioning – he’s a little bit scrappy.

Thomas doesn’t shy away from contact and sometimes appears to look for it.  He uses a stiff arm often and effectively against defenders.

Ian Thomas1

THE NEGATIVES:  Thomas is really raw.  He’s a bit of a project.  That might prove difficult for the Dolphins since as it stands right now they need a tight end to step in immediately.

His stats are not going to wow you.  He basically played one year at Indiana, his senior year.  Thomas actually transferred from community college in Maryland to Indiana after his sophomore year.

Before his senior year – Thomas had 3 catches.  In his senior year Thomas caught 25 passes including 5 touchdowns.  He was probably a littler underused.

Ian Thomas4

THE ALIEN DUST:  The difference between Thomas and some of the other day 1 and 2 tight ends is that Thomas really has a chance to develop into a pretty good blocker in addition to receiver.  Thomas might be the most compete tight end prospect.

On a very superficial level, he reminds me of former Dolphin Dion Sims.  But he is nowhere near the blocking Tight End Sims was coming out of Michigan State.  That said, good coaching might help Thomas a really gifted football player.

Expect Thomas to be off the board before the 4th round is through.  The raw talent is too much for NFL to pass on.

IanThomas6

Ian Thomas reminds me of my favorite mind scrambler – scrambling the minds of defenses each week.

. Not guys who lose their cool, and put themselves before the team. Ajayi was a guy who played hard, but didn’t want to put in the extra time to learn the things his HC wanted him too.

    ____________________________________________________________

Sorry Mike, I don’t think that statement is accurate, Ajayi was complaining to coaches about not getting carries and in Gases eyes that became a distraction, I doubt his departure had anything to do with his work ethic and more to do with personality conflicts between him and the staff.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I believe lack of work ethic was brought up by Gase. He didn’t say name but seemed easy to figure out.
And complaining about lack of carries is a me first attitude. Maybe the fact he didn’t go with the plays enough is why he didn’t get “his” carries.

  7. Can’t let the Ajayi thing go already. He’s gone. We’ve got Gore and Drake now. We’ll probably add a rb in the draft. Let it go

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Fits a narrative. Without it there is no narrative.

      • I’m looking forward to seeing what we do in the draft and if we add any more free agents to help the team. I’d like to see Gase get the offense where he wants it to be with the weapons he needs to run it properly and add a couple key defensive players.

The other guys, Landry, Suh, Ajayi are no longer on the team. Time to move forward.

  8. I’d like to see us get a tough guy at TE and that’s why I’m really high on Tyler Conklin. He’s a good blocker but he’s tough catching the ball and running with it afterwards. He’s not a finesse guy at the TE position. Maybe Wedge should check him out:

  9. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I am looking forward to the draft as well. The team has needed an identity make over for years. Really hasn’t had an identity since the Marino years. Gase seems to be the first coach since Shula who knows what personality he wants the team to have. The rest coached scared or, in the case of Saban, tried to fun it like a college team.

Seemingly every year, a top-5 prospect falls. Could it be Josh Rosen this year, after Jim Mora’s words about him?

  21. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

James, Minkah, one of the top 3 QB’s, Barkley, Chubb, Smith, Edmunds, Nelson, Ridley, Ward

One of these guys will be a Fin if we stay @11

Or it could be a 4th QB and his family?

  22. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That quote about Rosen from Mora probably won’t cause him to drop

  23. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    My thoughts.
They actually haven’t changed very much with FA.
With the first 5 picks we are looking for LB, QB, RB, OL/DL, TE

    11: R1P11 BPA of those 6 positions!
42: R2P10 TE, or BPA @ one of the positions left after the first pick
73: R3P9 If you haven’t taken a TE by now you better get what’s left! If you have it’s pretty much BPA of the remaining!
    123: R4P23 QB, RB BPA what’s left
    131: R4P31 RB, QB BPA what’s left

Lots of different ways it could go down!

    • D's avatar D says:

Thats why i think its going to be
      BPA
      BPA
      BPA
      BPA
      BPA
      BPA
      BPA
      BPA

I dont see why we have to try to cram specific positions into specific spots. We have enough places where we need to get deeper at the position and we have a deep enough talent pool to get them at different spots. They just need to get their guys are whatever level they can and at whatever cost makes them comfortable about getting the rest of their list addressed. There is no reason to sweat any pick this year.

  24. D's avatar D says:

Kinda scary im liking Walter, o Walterfootball’s mock.

    Baker Mayfield QB OU
    Hayden Hurst TE South Carolina
    Justin Jones DT NC STate
    Shaqueem Griffen LB UCF
    Trayvon Henderson S Hawaii
    Brandon Facyson CB VT

I think i would have preferred an OL at the last two spots, Joseph Notebloom was still there for the last one and Chukwuma Okorafor, was there for the one before. Either one of those could have been swapped out the corresponding OL choice and i would have been a little happier with that draft.

    • D's avatar D says:

I never like Walter’s drafts, this is one of the few ones ilike. Charlies are usually much better.

    • D's avatar D says:

      Charlies is
      Roquan Smith LB Georgia
      Ronald Jones II RB USC
      Tyrell Crosby OT Oregon
      Kentavius Street DE NC State
      Dalton Schultz TE Stanford

Its a solid draft, he had us passing on Mayfield to take Smith.

Tremaine Edmunds and Mayfield for me, that is if our FO really likes him.

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

        I really like Edmunds!
Mayfield has Johny Foosball, and Ryan Left written all over him! JMHO

      • D's avatar D says:

I dont see the Ryan Leaf comparison at all. Leaf had 0 leadership attributes, Mayfield seems strong in those areas. He also seems comparable to me to Manziel only in a very slight way. His play style is similar but he has more refined ability than Manziel and his cockiness on the field is comparable, but he is a beeter on-field leader too, and he has more inspiring qualities that make other players follow him into battle than i ever saw from Manziel. They both are uber cocky,so i get why he is cmpared but i think its stops pretty short of them being identical.

Here’s the thing for me. We’re just fans of the team. Gase is the HC and it’s his right to get the players he wants to go to battle with. After all the performance of the team is on him. We just root for the brand and hope for the best.

    • I understand what you’re saying but it doesn’t mean we have to be happy about it; especially if it doesn’t work out. If it works out than you eat crow. If not, ………

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Of course! All I care about is the team competitive, exciting and playing meaningful games down the stretch and making it to the postseason. Then it’s up for grabs. You can’t win it if you’re not in it.

    • D's avatar D says:

Im not sure how you wouldnt be happy about something that hasnt turned out bad yet. Its your opinion that its a bad pick, and you could be wrong. You should assume you know less than they do, because quite frankly they do it for a living and we dont. Im sure every single one of us has been right and wrong about a bunch of our choices so why be upset if for instance they pick Mayfield. Wouldn’t they know if that’s the right guy for them? Dont they have a lot riding on a pick like that, like a lot more riding on it than us?

  34. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

How can you tell the new Russian Spam from the regular Porn Spam?

Oh Well it did remind me to go clean my Emails out!

  35. D's avatar D says:

The only pick i can, at the time of the pick, remember not liking was the Caroo pick. I had a couple of “Who is this fucking guy” moments, and really the Caroo pick was one of those too, except it also came with trading a 3rd and a 4th to move up to get him. Once i settles down and reviewed some of his game tape i was pretty ok with the pick and even though it hasnt worked out im pretty ok with it now. They wanted him, they went up and got him and im sure those two picks didn’t make or break our season last year.We make too much over a few picks we woory too much about what we coulda had vs what we did get. Its also not going to work out all the time, including the ones we treade up to get so just live learn and move on. As long as this franchise is here next year ill be a fan next year no matter who we took, what round, trade uor down, whatever.

  36. I’d be happy with any number of picks at #11 including a qb if that’s what happened. As long as that qb isn’t Mayfield. In no particular order and including the obvious:

    Rosen
    Chubb
    Fitz
    Edmunds
    Smith
    Nelson
    Ridley
    Darnold

So, there’s a lot of guys I’d be happy with and I can’t say I’d really be happier with any one of these guys over another. They all have the ability to help the team out for quite awhile and be very good at the next level.

    ————
All good: we can agree to disagree.

    • we can agree to disagree and that’s fine but when you see what you’ve seen in 3 yrs, not 1 but 3, and you see that he hasn’t been able to put it together you just have to be realistic about the situation.

like Parcells would say, “if they don’t bite as pups” and Parker never bit. He’s got a lot of athletic ability but he doesn’t have what it takes to be a professional in the NFL.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I hear ya, and I sometimes question DeVante’s maturity, too. However, we’ve seen many flashes of what he IS capable of doing… if he can only stay healthy.

If he’s a ‘prima donna’, he’ll be gone soon. Low-cost, high reward if he shows and prove this season.

That’s all the guys drafted with Parker. Most are long gone.
Not many did well. Kevin White has hardly played due to injuries. Same with Perriman. Montgomery has made a little noise, but at RB.

Diggs turns out to be the steal. And Lockett is good?

  60. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think the team will give Parker this offseason – TC and PS to prove himself and if he does well he’ll be part of the WR rotation. If some other WRs step up in TC and the PS and they feel they can move on from him, they could trade him for a conditional pick in 2019 based on performance. The problem is if we don’t sign him to his 5th year option he becomes a UFA next year so will a team be willing to trade a pick for him and do an extension or risk losing him to FA?

    • my biggest concern with him would be if he shows enough this year to hang around and is signed to an extension and shits the bed. that’s my biggest “fear”.

My hope is that we either pick another wr in the draft or have someone in house who can take his job away and never look back. If he couldn’t stay healthy in 3 yrs it’s a longshot that he’s going to all of a sudden put it together this season.

And I don’t know so much it’s just about being healthy as it is having the mental makeup to play thru an injury or injuries others would play thru.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

He does play through the injuries but the coaches see he’s not the same guy running and jumping. We’ll see. I really don’t have a gut feeling about him. I wish he would be what I thought he would be. 🙂

so, what do consider salvageable? If he scores 3 or 4 tds and has 750 yds receiving is that good enough to say we keep him around or do we shop him?
    ————
I can’t put stats on that question, bud. If we TRULY spread the ball around with Tannehill (meaning equal distribution, instead of Tanny only throwing it to his ‘Linus safety blanket’: Jarvis), stats will be ‘essentially’ meaningless.

This is another case where the tape > stats… as far as his value is concerned. If DeVante is healthy, I think we’ll get a better gauge of matters.

  62. Well, there you have it. Pouncey brothers training with Foerster and giving him props. WTF is that shit?

    https://twitter.com/miaphinsfootbal/status/980945927082070023

  63. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I should know this, but I don’t, being the ‘Compensatory Pick Formula’ is all but top secret and I can’t keep up with the details…

IF we let DeVante walk into FA after this season (IF he sucks), wouldn’t we get a decent compensatory pick, based on his former 1st round status? If so, we may get better value out of him by doing this, rather than trading him.

Thoughts? Insight? Does anybody know the answer?

    • depends on the size of the contract and the net gains/losses in free agency.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The formula is mostly based on gain vs. loss and the value of the contracts. They try to determine if a team took a big hit losing players vs. what they added in FA.

If he has a shit season he’s not going to get a good deal from any team. So if Parker signed say a one year deal with some team which seems to be a new thing with WRs that have questions about them, that would not have much effect on comp picks. Not sure if him being a former 1st rd pick has anything to do with it.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

      Thanks, Prof Lou and Tim.

That stated, I’m assuming we’re going to get a NICE compensatory pick for our loss of Suh, no?

  64. No way Tim Settle, DT, Virginia Tech stays where he is projected to go at this time. He’s definitely going to make a huge jump up the boards before the draft. The guy is just too dominant in the middle to drop to the 3rd or 4th rd. Only ? is the one year of production but if Vander Esch is being projected to go high with only one year then Settle should too.

  65. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Nope, we released him didn’t lose him to FA.
    ————
Come again? We couldn’t lose him to FA unless we released him, right?

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I don’t see us getting any comp picks in 2019 based on this offseason. I also don’t think the goal is to get a lot of them. That means you’re losing the FA battle every year. We’re trying to keep more guys. This year we tried to get out of some salary situations. We also made more trades to acquire players rather than FA.

  67. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The 4th and 7th we got for Landry in the trade is what the team thought they would get for him in comp picks if he got the contract he’s looking for. The only difference is we get the 4th a year early this year and the 7th is next year.

Our FA losses were Thomas, Parkey and Hewitt. Moore has not been signed by a team yet. We signed Wilson, Amendola, Sitton, Young, Gore, Fales and Osweiler. That will be considered a gain on our part. If we let Landry walk, he might not have been enough to even get us a 4th and 7th.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

BRO! This is where I disagree with ya, man. We selected Jarvis in the 2nd round, and he went on to set the ALL-TIME record for most receptions in one’s first 4 years… EVAH!!!

I STILL don’t like the (lack of) compensation we got for him… a mere 4th and a 7th???
I understand the problem of him wanting elite money, but I still feel like we got the bad end of the stick.

JMO… and it’s ALRIGHT to disagree!

Let him walk for nothing as a UFA vs. getting something for him in a trade, and chance getting no comp picks for him? What would you do? The team and Jarvis split ways and we did not want to pay him elite money. No team was giving up a lot of draft compensation and paying him elite money. If there was, that would be the trade.

Most of our offseason moves were on offense which is what Gase wanted, he didn’t like the makeup of it. Just Quinn and Hayes on defense. To me that opens up the draft for BPA in at least the early rounds. Because we have a foundation to build on with the defense. That group has a lot of new players over the last two years. Not a lot of game time together that will start a new this year. Then you can start to target needs in the mid and late rounds.

M13, do you know early Genesis when they were more of an artsy rock band and less pop? If not check it out, really good musical movements. Their live album ‘Seconds Out’ was a huge influence for me learning how to play guitar. I jammed to that album in my teens hundreds of times.

  77. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The one advantage that comes with losing free agents during the offseason is that if you lose enough of them, the NFL eventually makes up for it with extra draft picks.

The league hands out compensatory picks every year and those picks were released on Friday. Although the exact formula the league uses to award picks hasn’t been released, we do know that it basically comes down to this: a team that loses more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft picks.

Using that “formula,” the big winners this year were the Cowboys, Packers, Bengals and Raiders, who all received four extra picks. That means Jon Gruden is going to have some extra draft ammo to work with heading into April.

The Cowboys and Packers have actually become experts at acquiring compensatory picks. Since the league started handing them out in 1994, the Packers have been given 42, while the Cowboys have been given 41. Only the Ravens have been given more compensatory picks (49) over the past 24 years.

The Cardinals (3), Texans (3) and Vikings (2) were the only other teams that received multiple compensatory picks. The highest awarded pick went to the Cardinals, who were given the 97th overall selection in the draft for losing several free agents last year, including Calais Cambell, D.J. Swearinger and Tony Jefferson. –CBS

3 fingers of whiskey later, I find the swelling to be a mere visual oddity.

If you think about it a lot of musicians in this late 70s early 80s we’re into crazy theatrics from all different genres

      David Bowie and even Kiss
If some one tried those things now, everyone would laugh

A sleeper for me this season is Vincent Taylor. He’s 6-3 300 but has long arms almost 35″ and over 10″ hands. He’s a disruptive player who needs some polish on his overall game. Had 1 PD and two blocked FGs last season.

Godchaux had a solid rookie season and he’s a self-motivated player. Good motor.

Phillips is huge and talented but he has that lazy tag, yet he has played with Suh since he’s been a rookie. Maybe he becomes the vet presence by default.

We didn’t sign a vet DT other than Hayes being able to play DT in pass rush situations. I think we draft a DT at some point.

M13, though Roger Waters is politically known as a leftist and anti-Israel I still love his music. My B-I-L has a friend who stopped listening to Floyd because he feels Waters is anti-semitic even though he always loved the band. My B-I-L stated I don’t mix my music and politics. He taught me something that day. 🙂

I would be in favor of trading down, gathering maybe a 3rd and 5th and taking the TE we covet the most before the run starts mid or late 1st and early 2nd rd which I think will happen. Every team wants one of those weapons at TE – mismatches. In reality one might be there at #42 but I could see two going 1st and two going early 2nd rd. Now we’re down to the 5th best guy unless we like him.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

They get hurt a lot too. Even Gronk. So I’d be fine getting 2 TEs.
      Just renovate the position.
I think Hurst and Gesicki could be the new Witten.
As of now at TE we have 2 converted QBs and a slow WR.
As in … we have nothing.
