Dolphins play best game of season – Fall to Bills 31-21

QB Ryan Fitzpatrick played his best game of the season for the Dolphins. It wasn’t enough however due partly to his own huge mistake, a terrible INT at a point of the game where the Dolphins had the ball for about 10 minutes on a long drive to start the 3rd QTR and Fitzpatrick threw a crucial interception at the BUF 12 yard line. The Dolphins had an opportunity at a minimum to go up 17-9 with a FG, but the Dolphins wanted the TD, much like the decision to try for the 2 PT conversion last week. Good idea, poor execution.

It’s clear that Mark Walton has now emerged as the lead back as Kenyan Drake is expected to be traded before the deadline. That would leave the Dolphins with Walton, Ballage, Gaskin, Laird and Cox. I wouldn’t expect a big return for Drake, probably a 5th or 6th at best. DeVante Parker had a nice game, one of his best contributions in some time, and it wasn’t even really that good. Parker finished with 5 catches for 55 yards and 1 TD. Gesicki is really heating up making tough catches almost routinely now. Gesicki added 4 catches for 41 yards, a couple of them in serious traffic with a high degree of difficulty. Also very encouraging is WR Preston Williams who continues to grow before our eyes. Is he not doing what we hoped DeVante Parker could be? Williams finished with 6 catches for 82 yards leading the team in both categories.

The Dolphins won the T.O.P. battle in this game but still ended up on the short side on the scoreboard. As per usghe, we need to score more TD’s. We have had a devil of a time getting into the end zone, which is odd considering we have a fairly strong runner in Walton, 2 WR with good size (P. Williams 6’5″ and D. Parker 6’3″) and a TE with a huge catch radius and great vertical capabilities in Mike Gesicki. Hopefully we will figure out a way to use all of them.

The Dolphins managed to get 2 sacks yesterday and to no one’s surprise, it was newcomers, LB Vince Biegel got his 2nd and Taco Charlton added his team leading 3rd sack. Once again, Charles Harris remains sackless and once again you can read that as you like. It’s amazing we don’t get torched with the guys we have been playing in our secondary. Ken Webster, Ryan Lewis, Jomal Wiltz. Bobby McCain and Eric Rowe started at S yesterday. I mean who are some of these guys?

It’s impossible not to respect for Brian Flores. He’s doing this with smoke and mirrors. I know we haven’t won yet but it’s hard to expect him to win with the roster we’re throwing out there week after week. The Bills are a legit contender in the AFC for at a minimum a WC berth, but their defense is one of the better units in the NFL and we handled them in this game. The score doesn’t show it but the T.O.P. does. If not for that ill timed INT late in the 3rd QTR we had a shot to win this game. I think that was the turning point right there. Last week we took the game to the very end although we played so poorly in that game. This week we played head to head with the Bills but came up short. We’re heading in the right direction, and have to take comfort in that. At 0-6, it’s all we got.

GO DOLPHINS!!

Sucks that we’ll not see Tua and Burrow head to head. On the other hand, Bama will rely on there defense so Burrow will get a real test.

I am sure the reason for the improved play this weekend was because I spent $40 on a Dolphins stapler

Good write up, Mike. Your last paragraph is spot on. If Phillips doesn’t blow up our 1st down play and set us back 10 yards, we probably score a TD and have a serious chance to win that game. Fitz played well, but that was a critical mistake.

“…like the decision to try for the 2 PT conversion last week. Good idea, poor execution.”

Completely agree with this as well. There was nothing wrong with going for 2 and the win when you’re 0-5 and have zero prospects. It doesn’t ‘confirm’ any tanking narrative, lol. If Drake doesn’t drop the ball, it wouldn’t have looked like such a ridiculously bad play (although I still think he probably doesn’t get in).

Enormously douchey ‘I told you so’ tanking posts not withstanding, anyone that thinks Flores or the players are throwing these games on purpose has probably never played competitively on any level. Expecting your players to fight to get better each week and respect you at at all when they know you are calling a game to lose just doesn’t happen.

Clearly the F.O. is rebuilding to lose this season, but unless I see us go for 1 when we need 2 at the end of the game, you’ll never convince me a real football coach is losing an entire season on purpose, lol.

Yep — team fought like anything yesterday. Also put to rest any fear had about it going 0-16. That team will beat somebody some any given Sunday. Might not even be the Jets or Bengals.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, we’ll probably surprise someone this year. I haven’t watched any Bengals games, but it’s easy to believe we may actually be a better than them. We’ll see how it shakes out, but regardless of future outcomes at least we’re playing competitive now.

    Okay folks

    Question of the week

Put aside – “I always root for the Dolphins to win” if that’s your thing for this question

Is it better for the draft to lose to the Steelers or beat the Steelers in MNF

If we get beat by the Steelers we may be picking at 1 and 9 (just a approx)
But if we beat the Steelers we may be picking at 2 and 4 or 5

Obviously 1 game doesn’t set where we pick
But by losing we get closer to 1
But by winning we move out 2nd first rounder closer to the top

I personally favor beating the Steelers
And maybe we end up with 2 picks in the top 5
Rather than 1 pick at 1 or 2 and the 2nd pick closer to 10

    • D's avatar D says:

I’m for beating them too even from a simple strategy standpoint

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Trade chart at least says better for us to lose. Earlier the pick the higher the value. Might end up us winning doesn’t change ours but does theirs, but that can be said about any game like that this time of year.

And at this point I hope we beat everyone, least till we get that first one under our belt.

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Piggy – Taco’s sack in this game was pure luck, he was just about a yard past the LOS, Allen was chased by two other guys and he happened to run right into the waiting arms of Taco. No real effort was necessary other than to make the tackle and in that regard he came close to grabbing Allen’s helmet during the takedown. Still, it counts as a sack in the books.

I just don’t get why he did it in that game instead of saving it for a playoff game like he did with the linemen spreading out wide against the Ravens a few years ago.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Like the article suggests, it’s a loop hole Belichick thinks should be closed and he chose to expose it in this game.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh, so he did it for the good of the game. Yep that sounds like Belicheat, always looking to improve the game instead of exploiting everything he can find to get every advantage he can 🤡

Look out little dog!! Get off the track!

    Whew that was close!

  54. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, Belichick is always pushing the envelope.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That is part of what makes him a great coach. Every little detail is examined. My only thought as to why he busted this out now instead of saving it, is that any of the actual good HCs in the league already know it and wouldn’t have fallen for it like Gase did.

If this is a previously unrecognized loophole, then it makes sense to save this for a playoff situation where (as an example) the Pets are up 4 points with 3 and a half minutes left, they could run the clock to the 2 minute warning. That’s a big deal in that situation, but like I said, maybe a John Harbaugh would already know this, and would have accepted the 1st penalty.

Remember when The Pets played the Ravens in the playoffs 3-5 years ago, and the Pets offense busted out a crazy 3 linemen in tight, 2 linemen out wide formation, and threw the Ravens D into disarray giving the Pets an easy score. That maneuver sealed the playoff win for the Pets. I’d expect Belicheat to save something like this for a time like that, not in a 33-0 game, lol.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yes I do remember that. I’m just going by what the article was suggesting.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t even think it’s a loophole really. It’s more a pick your poison. I figure Belicheat’s smirk was about how clueless Gase was in the situation.

  55. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Pets have 18 flipping INTs this year. That’s 2.5 a game, smh.

  56. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, Gase is too absorbed with the mastery of his offense to concern himself with such nonsense. LOL

  57. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Geez, sorry to keep talking Pets, but these numbers are crazy. In 7 games they have only allowed opponents into the red zone 6 times, and 3 of those resulted in turnovers. Ridiculous.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t view it as hosed, more like James and Wake not living up to the value. We’ll likely get something but we have enough premium picks to upgrade this team. If our future is based on those comp picks we screwed up majorly.

  66. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We don’t know what we’re going to do in these drafts with trades etc., but it’s very rare for a team to have five 1st rd picks and four 2nd round picks over two years. Add that to plenty of cap to work with and some of the good young players we already have, and we should be able to start trending upwards rather quickly. If that doesn’t happen the people in control of all of that failed.

Then looked at the standings and was like shit, who’s going to beat the Pats to keep our undefeated streak going. They are clicking on all cylinders. Hope it doesn’t come down to us in week 17. That is when the panic attack started. LOL

I know Young is a beast, but i dont think he fits us as well as some of the others int he draft. Im definitely not wanting him to be our top pick. Id rather trade back a little (or hell even stay put) and take Andrew Thomas and use the Pittsburg pick to take either a QB or Derrick Brown to pair with Wilkins. Circle back around with the Texans pick and get wither Jonathan Greenard or Raekwon Davis or CJ Henderson. If we can pick up an early second or another first we might land 2 of those 3.

      • D's avatar D says:

Oh and at this point, despite really liking Drake id trade both he and Parker. We probably could get a 4th for Drake, couple of teams out there could really use him, a team like Seattle or Green Bay could definitely use him to his potential. Parker could fit several teams, probably could get a 4th for him too.

  72. D's avatar D says:

With the ammunition we have coming up over the next couple of years, both draft pick wise and cap space, i dont think it would be too far fetched to see us be buyers and sellers as we get to the trade deadline.

Here are some of the rumors i have heard about and my thoughts about the ones i think might be of interest to the team:

Vic Beasley Jr., DE Atlanta Falcons —- I might would be a buyer here, young, talented, hybrid player, would be a good fit for our team. Dont know if the team would be interested but he does fit the mold of people that they have been looking to add. I personally would be in on bringing him in, for the right trade value.

Artie Burns, CB, Pittsburgh Steelers —- If the price is right maybe, we could use secondary help, but im not overly interested in him.

Solomon Thomas, DE, San Francisco 49ers —- Like Beasly, young talented player, hybrid DT/DE for us, fits our scheme.

Chris Harris Jr., CB, Denver Broncos —- Like Artie, not overly interested but would boost our secondary and would be a young enough guy to build around.

Patrick Peterson, CB, Arizona Cardinals —- Love this guy, but he seems to have a black cloud around him recently and he is expensive. He probably would take too much to acquire too.

Leonard Williams, DE, New York Jets —- Same as Thomas and Beasley, and taking him hurts a rival so bonus lol.

We better be drafting some defense on the 1st round. Can’t go all offense. I also don’t like WR in round 1

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d be shocked if we didn’t draft Edge and a CB by the end of the 3rd round.

      • D's avatar D says:

My guess is that with the first 5 picks we have we will have probably a DT/DE hybrid a DE/OLB hybrid and a CB. The other two picks im hoping is OT and OG, but if we go QB, then i wouldnt be surprised if its QB and WR

    • D's avatar D says:

Id go WR in round 1 if its a combo up with a QB, like pairing Tua with Juedy. I wouldnt otherwise. WR’s can be picked up in the second like Ruggs who would plug in with what we have pretty easy. Our system doesnt need a true number 1, but i also dont think id pass up an opportunity to pair Tua with Jeudy if Tua indeed is the choice we make with our first pick.

We have so many holes I don’t think you can rule out and all offense (or defense) I. The first

But our needs are going to shift a little after free agency

If we signed multiple OL or defensive players in FA there’s a lot of room in the first 2 picks

Personally I like the idea of laying the groundwork for offense in one draft
Or doing it the other way around

  78. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

What ever happened to drafting the BPA? When did that go out the window, and why?

The answer is it NEVER went out the window, and especially in our current situation. Anybody want some syrup with their hot takes… err, cakes? LOL

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve been saying BPA all along. In fact I just said it at 3:06. LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I didn’t say that YOU said it (and you never would say it, because I KNOW how you operate! Yes, that’s a compliment, Tim!), nor did I say that anybody here said it.

Seems half of our fandom (not here, but all over the internet) still thinks that building on only one side of the ball per Draft is the way to victory. Parcells tried it and failed. Ireland tried it and failed. Silver Fox tried it to a certain extent and got run out.

And the whole doubling-down on a position (Parcells’ inspired ideology) is only applicable if you’re only one player away and have picks to blow (see Vontae and Seanathan Smith). BAD idea on the part of Parcells, when we still had building to do all across the roster.

  79. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

M13, I’m not a big believer in focusing on one side of the ball as a strategy. If it works out that way so be it. I think the best way to draft is to follow your board.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I never said that you’re a big believer in focusing on one side of the ball as a strategy. YOU, more so than anyone I’ve ever encountered on a blog, have endorsed BPA, through and through.

And right NOW is the time to embrace that concept, more than ever. I’m right there with you, 100%.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I was speaking generally. I only addressed you because we were discussing the topic. With all the picks we have if we just follow our board before you know it you have talent throughout the roster. Obviously we could trade up or down here and there to target prospects we covet. But after FA and the draft our roster is going to look very different than it does right now. I’m excited to have a new team to root for.

  80. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

BPA will fit any need. LOL

  81. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

“I’m excited to have a new team to root for.”

    Yep!

If you look at our needs position by position, after FA and the draft, we could be looking at 4 or 5 new starters on each side of the ball (meaning 8-10 total). We’ll be watching a whole new team dynamic, just like we are this year except in reverse (we hope, lol).

I think BPA is going to line up well for us this upcoming draft. We have needs up and down the roster, so when we pick this draft, BPA should marry with need.

We’re almost halfway through this festering turd of a season. Only 10 more games and 7-10 more losses to go! lol

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Not that there are any ‘new’ ideas in my post. I basically just restated everything Tim, M13, and Piggy stated just before me, lol.

  82. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – how often is a WR the BPA early in the 1st RD?

    • D's avatar D says:

Well Jerry Jeudy is ranked as the 3rd highest ranked prospect of the entire draft right now so there is a good chance it would be this year.

M – how often is a WR the BPA early in the 1st RD?
    ——————–
Fairly often. It depends on the team and it’s need for a WR1, of course. Plus, it’s contingent upon the crop and quality of WRs who declare for the Draft in any given year.

We see ‘dry’ years for WRs, and we see ‘wet’ years for WRs.

And even in ‘dry’ years, we sometimes see that ONE WR who we think can be the next Jerry Rice.

My man, it all depends on a great many things.

I hope that answers your question!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And additionally, when we see said ‘wet’ years for WRs, we don’t see the next Jerry Rice.

It all comes down to an accumulation of tape-study, faith in said WR prospect, and what the team already has in-house. For instance, Dan Marino could make an UDFA look like a superstar.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

If it depends on need at a position then is it really drafting BPA? Only if they have 2 prospects rated the same and they have a higher need for the WR. It just seems to me that teams never win championships because they have the best WR.

  85. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Here’s a “Did You Know”…

If you build a BEAST O-Line, you can have an UDFA QB and UDFA WR take you all the way to the NFC Championship game. Who did this? His name is our former GM, Rick Spielman.

Now, that’s not to mention that Rick Spielman also KILLED IT with his Defensive picks… most of which were (sadly) MY guys. Spielman REALLY liked those UCLA-coached Jim Mora Jr LBs like I did, to be sure. And they’ve ALL kicked azz in the NFL without a doubt.

I oftentimes think we gave up on Spielman way too early… but it is what it is.

I know my GUY Son is a big fan of Cousins… and man, that team looks really good this year.

Rick Spielman may be up for GM of the year fairly soon.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Spielman was Wannstedt’s guy so when he was fired and Saban was hired he brought in his own guy in Randy Mueller. You know how it works.

  86. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree with M13 that sometimes there are some WRs at the top of the draft and other years are dry. If a WR is a special talent nothing wrong with drafting them. However I hope we can put a good group together without using top picks or high-priced FAs.

Anyone else think that Vince Biegel has the look of a Ninkovich/Van Noy type LB?

  89. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I have never liked drafting WRs high….partly because of how difficult players at that position can be. Fair or not, it sure seems like a lot of WRs can be problem children. You don’t want that in a top pick. That pick needs to be, hopefully, a core guy for years. We have tons of needs, so I’d go another direction. I just want them to collect good players though. If that’s at WR, fine. It’s a need too, I guess.

    • dbolt48's avatar dbolt48 says:

I think Tylan Wallace at the end of round 1 or early round 2 would be an ideal target for Mia. I’ve moved away from those top WR’s early as I think Wallace and Duvernay(UT) would be ideal fits for this O. I really hope the target the fits vs the names.

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, Beigel is in his 3rd season as a former 4th round pick of the Packers. Ninkovich is retired after 11 seasons as a former 5th rd pick of the Saints. Van Noy is in his 6th season as a former 2nd rd pick of the Lions who did not pan out there. Beigel is in the early stages of his career and maybe Miami is his fit. Go with the flow bro!!! 🙂

  91. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

It’s going to be a good year for WR
But it’s a deep year ore than anything less

Jeudy looks like a top tier WR
I personally like a Tee Higgins
But I do think we can wait on WR depending on the how the draft falls
I think we need one though

  92. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Ken

I think you are underestimating Biegel
His nfl career was derailed score it started by an injury
But he was pretty solid playing along side TJ Watt

I think he has potential he just needs a chance
And we are the perfect team to give guys like that a chance

Talent is low but so far Biegel and Taco are both showing themselves to be pickups that can help get us there

  93. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    Interesting thought?

  94. bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

For obvious reasons I am pulling for Biegel, VanGinkel and Dieter. But other than the Wisconsin connection, they are lunch pail guys who work hard with good fundamentals and fit well into a team first concept.
