Week 3 – Dolphins @ Jaguars

So here comes Week 3 already, and it’s a short week for us Dolphins fans. Here we are at 0-2. Game 1 we didn’t really compete. Game 2 we were in it till the last minute, but in both games there was one clear message. This defense just isn’t in sync yet. Flores says it’s communication issues which in many ways is understandable. We all knew so many new faces getting thrown together is a tough situation, especially when you compound that with less practice time, and no preseason games. It’s easy to get frustrated watching them, considering all the money we spent in free agency on the defensive side of the ball, Kyle Van Noy, Shaq Lawson, Emannuel Ogbah etc. We didn’t stop in free agency either, with our third pick in the first round of the 2020 draft we selected Auburn DB Noah Igbinoghene. We continued with defense in RD 2 with DL Raekwon Davis from Alabama, and in RD 3 we selected S Brandon Jones from Texas. We continued to fortify the DL with Jason Strowbridge and Curtis Weaver in RD 5, but as we have well documented here, Weaver is gone. In any case, it’s clear we needed to work on the defense, but the early returns are not promising.

It’s funny, these 2 teams at this moment in time are 2 teams that are quite different as far as outlooks are concerned. Everyone was sure the Jaguars were looking to draft Trevor Lawrence in 2021 and threw in the towel. Now, in some ways they’re the talk of the town as a high-flying exciting team. They’re 1-1 and are +4 in points scored/points allowed. The Dolphins are 0-2 and are -13. Gone are Yannick Ngakoue and Leonard Fournette and yet this team has the arrow pointing up. Our Dolphins? This game will say a lot in that regard. After a tough loss to the Bills in which this team competed well, the arrow is slightly up, but a loss to the Jags and an 0-3 record will change that. Hard to say game 3 is a pivotal game because it’s still early, but a loss tonight, especially a bad loss could be bad for this team.

Byron Jones is apparently playing, but of course, how long and how effective he is we have no idea. I’d bet Iggy Mahogany is getting lots of reps outside to be ready. Not sure how correct Ourlads depth chart is but it shows 3rd RD draft pick Brandon Jones at SS with Bobby Mac at FS. I guess Jones is going to get his shot. I thought our depth and our strength was our secondary. Byron Jones, Xavien Howard and Noah Igbinoghne. Bobby Mac at safety again with Eric Rowe, and then all those guys as depth like Brandon Jones, Clayton Fejedelem and Kavon Frazier. So far, we haven’t been able to find the right mix, and our lack of offense has made it tougher on the defense.

As far as the offense is concerned, it’s been odd so far. We picked up Jordan Howard and in the draft when we were all getting quite upset at the fact that we ignored the RB position, the trade for Matt Breida soothed us. Well, after 2 games, Howard and Breida have 25 carries combined and Breida has 2 receptions. It’s been last year’s 7th RD pick that has received more playing time and nearly double the touches of either Howard or Breida. He’s done well in that role, and that’s the important thing. I’d rather a coach play the guy that gets it done over the guy who cost more or was drafted higher, but it’s surprising nonetheless.

What’s been great so far is watching the rise of TE Mike Gesicki. He really came on towards the middle of last season and this season has continued that rise. After 2 games this season Gesicki has 11 receptions for 160 yards and 1 TD. WR Isaiah Ford is getting it done as well, and unfortunately, the nagging injuries have once again found Devante Parker. He’s in the lineup so give him that, but he’s hampered for sure. Preston Williams has the shine dull a bit as he hasn’t been a big part of the offense at all, but he is coming back from and ACL tear. Jakeem Grant hasn’t really been involved and Lynn Bowden has yet to be active, something that will continue for a while until he’s learned enough to hit the field.

Have you noticed that I’m 6 paragraphs in and I HAVEN’T MENTIONED THE O-LINE? It’s amazing, but this is one unit that is moving in the right direction. It’s a pleasure not to feel the need to ridicule this unit, and although they aren’t a top unit, they aren’t keeping the team from accomplishing what they want on offense. Thankfully, holding calls aren’t being called like they have in previous seasons, they’re letting it go somewhat to keep the game flowing, and I’m enjoying it. Austin Jackson, Ereck Flowers, Ted Karras, Solomon Kindley and Jesse Davis. All of them have played every snap to their credit. Pretty impressive I’d say. You have to be pleased knowing they aren’t the problem. I said it, the O-line isn’t a problem. Feels good.

So is it really Ryan Fitzpatrick vs Garner Minshew? Hardly. James Robinson (undrafted) has been a big part of the offense, and Gardenr Minshew has played well throwing 6 TD’s with only 2 INT’s. Fitz has 2 TD’s and 3 INT’s but one of those INT’s was the garbage no-call PI at the end of the game by the Patriots. Still, Minshew is putting points on the board and not turning it over. I don’t really know what to expect tonight, will it be a shootout or a conservative close to the vest affair? Will we see more of Jordan Howard, or will Myles Gaskin be the bellcow? Will DeVante Parker be a factor? Will the defense make its presence felt? Stay tuned, tonight at 8:20PM on NFLN or your local channel affiliate. Enjoy!

Here’s a Q — In NFL.com FF why are the Rams players “LA” and Chargers players “LAC”? Seems unfair, like the Chargers are the red-headed step-child.

  8. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Sometimes I wonder, if Goff is autistic or ADD. There’s got to be something with him, everytime I watch the Rams he makes a few head scratching plays. 3 today in the 1st half. Scrambling right with no one open he doesn’t get rid of the ball a D takes a sack. Same series 1 or 2 plays later he holds it too long and it pushes back the FG to 52 yards, which was missed, very RTesque. 19 seconds left in the half 2nd 10 at their own 35, he’s out of the pocket and scrambles for 2 yards trailing 21-3. Throw the FN ball away and save the 4 or 5 seconds.

He reminds me of former Rams QB Jim (Chrissy) Everett. They both seem really dense and tend to have the deer in headlights look far too often.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

LV goes 75 yards last 30 or so seconds of 1st half cheats 13-10.

Why is LAC seemingly inferior to you? Maybe others see it the opposite. Why were the Rams slighted with only 2 letters? 🙄

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cause LAC makes it seem like not as much the city’s team as LA would. Like said seemed the fair then was LAR for the Rams.

  25. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Wow Metcalf made a stupid play

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

There’s lots of stupid players in the NFL now, just take a look at all of these QBs that you just can’t stop at the end of a game on a winning drive Mahomes, Jackson, Allen, Wilson, Wentz, Dak, Brees, Rothlesburger…not to mention the WRs that you can’t stop either. The rules have helped with that though.

  26. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Murray on Arizona is such an inconsistent passer. He makes some really nice throws then he just makes some horrible ones where just stares down receivers with tunnel vision. I don’t think he is an NFL quarterback

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Lol, they said the same thing about Allen, then try to stop either when you’re ahead and they have the ball with 2 minutes left.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Never saw anything like that out of Allen. Never heard that spoken about him. Big question on him was accuracy which I had no doubt that he would develop that

  27. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, this season may come down to the battle of attrition more than ever before. Players are dropping like flies.

  28. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Brewers made it tough on us the last week of the season. I wasn’t sure we were going to make it in. Not that I think it really matters much. We drew the Padres, and you guys have the Dodgers, so we’re likely both first round exits.

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I agree. Brewers probably lose 2 quick games and done. Now watch their bats suddenly come alive lol.

  35. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

  36. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

  39. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Really bad situational football by Packers on TD before half. 9 seconds left from the 10. GB should just hold the receivers, and don’t let them off the line. You get the 5 yard penalty for holding, but there would only be enough for one more play from the 5 with about 4 seconds left. You make NO decide td or fg.

I’ve been saying this for 10 years now, and the only team that has done something like this was Baltimore on last play of SB against SF, they did it on Offense.

Yeah i caught most of that game. KJ Costello, you and i had talked about as well and how well he would do in that new system, id say over 600 years against LSU was a pretty good indication. ————————————————————
I agree i thinhk they are a middle of the pack team. Apparently cant put it together to get wins against the best in the AFC, but certainly played them tough enough to beat the weaker teams. 7-9 through 9-7 potential.

Miami Dolphins will face shaky Seahawks defense in Week 4

HUH, SOOOOOO. It appears that Wilson is on a record setting tear throwing the most TD’s in the history of the NFL to open the season but his defense is the second worse in history (after our 2019 team which was the worst)

Play some keep away next week and we might have a chance.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Keep away is what we did on Thursday in the 2nd half. We need to score and score often, then score some more, and then more, more, more…or that little fucker Wilson will😏

  50. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Miami had 12 first downs in the first quarter, the first time the Dolphins had more than 10 first downs in the first quarter of a game since at least 1992….

  51. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Stat of the Day

Xavien Howard and Noah Igbinoghene allowed only one reception on six pass targets combined Thursday night in Jacksonville. With Howard’s interception, and the completion going for only two yards, the Dolphins perimeter corners finished the game with a passer rating against of 0.0.

To bad our LB’s, S’s and Nickel allowed 100% of their passes to be caught! (well, 96%)

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The Seattle O that put up all those points against the Donkies in the SB takes a backseat to this year’s O. Wilson is so smooth in the pocket he’s almost untouchable, unless you bring a DB in to blitz.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I expect to see some exotic blitzes from our DBs on Sunday.

We’ve played Wilson twice, beat him in Miami his rookie season, then lost to him in Seattle 4 years ago game 1, in a game he was hobbled, but still (more on him later😉) managed to move around well enough to get the comeback win.

This was the game Suh sacked him and stepped on his ankle, and Stills dropped a wide open bomb in the first half.

Anyways, we haven’t seen the real Wilson as an opponent. I hope our D is up to the task. Anything under a 40dog I’ll consider a success.

Well, he’s got to play somewhere once Jones comes back.

The coaches know this and have decided to NOT give him practice reps inside so that would lead an O75 to believe that the slot is NOT where they plan to play him…

Key for us against the Sehawks will be pressuring Wilson and keeping him contained, and thats no easy task. If we can force “russel to cook” faster than he wants, he will burn dinner and we might could win. If he gets the time he got a lot during those previous games, he is going to kill us. We need Jones back too.

I know we are knocking on our defensive woes but, through 3 games, we are ranked 8th in giving up the fewest points. Does not include Ravens and Chiefs but at worst we are top 10. If Ravens score more than 25 points we will be #9 in scoring defense.

We do face the #2 scoring offense next week but their defense is the 9th worst scoring defense and their defense suffered a few more injuries yesterday that could cause some more players to be out or playing dinged up for their defense.

We will need to contain Wilson and DK Metcalf. They may without RB Carson and Rookie RG Lewis next week also. Both got injured and did not return to the game against Dallas.

To me Lockett is easily their biggest overall threat against us. Yes Metcalf too, but i feel better about X covering him than Igmahogany covering Lockett. Lockett getting open quick is going to kill any pass rush we can generate and we havent been generating much. No to be debbie downer, but our offense isnt going to help us much against their D, which is playing poorly, if they arent ever on the field. They will shew us up little bites at a time if we cant contain Lockett.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Wait, what, a meaningful stat? That’s unbelievable. Using the points per game from our last 2 games on O we’d be right at the top also. Ds around the league pretty much suck, it’s not just us.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The only problem with “zero emission” Hydrogen is the amount of fossil fuels used to process the hydrogen. Maybe in 15 years the processes will be more efficient, but right now it takes electrolysis or or thermochemical procedures to obtain the pure hydrogen to burn. (it uses more energy than the hydrogen created)

It will be great when Bio systems or Solar Direct systems reach a point where we don’t create more pollution obtaining the hydrogen than it saves burning the fossil fuels to get the energy to separate out the hydrogen. It will be a beautiful day when we have a source of fuel we can burn that only gives off water as the waste product. (PURE H2O)

  76. solar is the future, my solar stocks are up 300 percent in 3 months, one small one went up 300 in a week

  77. VSLR, RUN< and SUNW are outperformers on the market, Im holding them for at least 5 years or longer

  78. the market green stocks are doing incredible, alternative energy is skyrocketing, while oil, drilling, and fossil fuels are going down, cheasapeake, the king of fracking, Val, and many others declared bankruptcy
i have electric car stocks, charging station stocks, solar, and even a tidal energy stock is doing great

the problem with oil, besides its extremely bad for the environment, and obsolete,
is there is no profit in it

Was watching the science channel and they said that hydrogen isn’t an efficient enough fuel to offset the pull of gravity and thats why its never been used in the space program. They said that the amount of fuel and the container needed to hold the fuel for what it would take to get you off the ground is a negative return. My guess is it is going to take a while before its fully viable for use in travel. They did say that what they had hoped, after finding pockets of ice on the moon was that they could stage a liftoff, where only transport needed from earth to outer space would be to get people there would be a shuttle, and that the long range launch would use hydrogen converted from the ice pockets from the surface of the moon. Said that that seems doable since on the moon the force of gravity would be 60% less than on earth.

Liquid hydrogen is how most stuff is boosted up into space. But for sure not efficient for every day use on the world yet. Way too expensive versus your petro products. The future is the future though. And Airbus is already designing planes to use it.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Aluminum fuel is used in the solid booster rockets (with Ammonium perchlorate used as the accelerator to oxidize the aluminum) and liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen is used in the liquid rockets.

Dude you know so much. Do know Space Shuttle used hydrogen. So been around for a while.

If the jets were smart, and they’re not, they’d keep Gase in place all year so they can get Lawrence.

I think no matter what happens I think they are a safe bet for that. Although I think Darnold has talent but is damaged goods now because of Gase

Dude you know so much. Do know Space Shuttle used hydrogen. So been around for a while.

the MAIN engine on the space shuttle (Orange) was liquid H & O2, but the two smaller rockets (white) that would fall off first were Aluminum engines.

My ex-wife’s uncle was a rocket scientist….LOL….literally…..he worked on the shuttle programs.

    • D's avatar D says:

The liquid H&O2 isn’t what gets it off the ground though, thats what i was saying and the plan for the launch from the moon is pure hydrogen, not a mix.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Rock — that’s why like talking to people who know more than me about whatever. I learn. We’re till left with hydrogen has been a space fuel for a good long time though.

  84. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The first time I met my ex’s uncle we were sitting around on the 4th of July shooting the shit and that cat knew ALOT of stuff so jokingly I asked “what, are you a rocket scientist or something?” He looked at me and then at my ex and laughed and waited for HER to explain to me that YES he works for NASA. LOL

Stanger – I guess it’s no different from a Catholic going to a confessional for their sins. It’s not a license to kill, it’s just meant to absolve you of wrongdoings or sins. Not that I’m defending religion, I’m not, I think it’s just one more thing that separates people and we all know there have been countless wars due to religion.

Have no problem with Yom Kippur at all. And am technically still Jewish after all. Was just ranking on my first wife. Next Fest can tell you some stories about her. Not the sabra to be proud of.

    • D's avatar D says:

I think its the people that use religion separate them, religion is a unifying thing done appropriately.

    Hey D,
Thanks for asking. Everything is about as good as can be here. Mom’s got 2 chemo treatments left on the ovarian cancer, then she gets a month off to see how her body responds and what her CA125 (protein marker) numbers look like. Then she moves on to treating the tumors in her liver which we have no idea what that will look like yet.

It’s a roller coaster. She had to have a blood transfusion a couple of weeks ago as her counts weren’t bouncing back after her treatments. She was so weak she couldn’t shower by herself, but the transfusion really gave her a boost, and she’s looking strong for the last 2 sessions and is really looking forward to a month with no needles, no nausea, no medication, no pain. I’m really looking forward to it too, lol.

    Cheers 🙂

CAV KONG: BEST WISHES to your Mom in this difficult time. Fighting cancer isn’t easy. Everyone in my household will keep her, and YOU, in our thoughts. Before tonight’s Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Finals got underway, I was thinking how great it would be for Pat Maroon to score the winning goal and clinch the Cup for the Lightning!
    ————–
Right now, Brayden Point has the only goal in tonight’s game. The Lightning started strong. And the Stars committed TWO penalties to help the Bolts. As a result, Tampa Bay had 11 of the first 12 shots on goal with just 3 minutes left in the period. But a Lightning penalty led to a ferocious power play by Dallas. Dickinson nearly tied the score with about 1 minute left in the first stanza. But Vasilevskiy made a big save, preserving the Bolts 1 goal margin. I believe there’s about 30 seconds left in Dallas’ man advantage starting in the 2nd period.
    ————–
I’ll return after the end of period #2. GOO-O-O Bolts!!

  97. olddolphan's avatar olddolphan says:

TODAY AT WORK I TOLD EVERYBODY that Tampa Bay has followed every game that they lost vs. the Blue Jackets, the Bruins, the Islanders and the Dallas Stars with a win IN THE FOLLOWING CONTEST!! SO I CATEGORICALLY PREDICTED a Bolts’ win tonight!!

So far, Tampa Bay has followed the script. Blake Coleman’s goal in the 2nd period put the Lightning up 2-0. Tampa Bay has out shot (by 21-8) out hit and out scored the Stars in both periods so far. Dallas has looked a little slow and tired at times in this contest. And why not?? The combination of several overtime games plus defending against Tampa Bay’s impressive firepower has been a lot to overcome. The Stars are going to need a truly impressive 3rd period performance to pull this game out of the fire.

MEANWHILE, thousands and thousands of hard core Lightning Fans are gathered around Amalie Arena in Downtown Tampa viewing the game on several humongous outdoor Jumbotrons!! The loudly cheer EVERY good play by their beloved Bolts!!

    LIGHTNING FANS WANT ONE THING.
    THEY WANT THE STANLEY CUP!!!
