Week 15 – Patriots @ Dolphins

This is what the season has come down to, Week 15, Brian Flores’s Dolphins at 8-5 fighting for a playoff spot against Bill Belichick’s Patriots. Earlier this year, the Patriots embarrassed the Dolphins 21-11 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Cam Newton and the RPO time and time again fooled the Dolphins defenders to the tune of 15 carries for 75 yards and 2 TD’s by the NE QB. Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was abysmal that day completing 23 passes of 30 attempts, except 3 of those completions were to NE defenders. We just looked unprepared and overmatched by Bill Belichick’s gameplan and Cam Newton’s execution of it. We guessed wrong so many times on that RPO and it was one of the more frustrating things to watch. Brian Flores will have to design a better gameplan this time.

So many things have changed since then. Ryan Fitzpatrick is no longer our starting QB, it’s now rookie Tua Tagovailoa. Neither Jordan Howard (Released) or Myles Gaskin (COVID-19 list) are playing this Sunday. RB DeAndre Washington will get the start and returning to the backfield is Matt Breida. Salvon Ahmed is a longshot to play as well. WR DeVante Parker is limited with a hamstring injury but will likely play, but Preston Williams who played Week 1 is still out. TE Mike Gesicki is also likely out with a dislocated shoulder. Patriots WR Julian Edelman is on IR/R which means he’s eligible to play should the Patriots decide to activate him but this is his first week of practice and he’s been out since October 31st when he elected to have surgery on his knee. He is unlikely to play.

Cam Newton is tenuously holding on to the starting job in NE as he has struggled in his last 3 games throwing for only 272 yards with 1 TD against 3 INT’s and that includes the 45-0 walloping of the LA Chargers. He did rush for 2 TD’s against the woeful Chargers. If I know Brian Flores, Cam Newton won’t be running all over us Sunday. We’ll be on him like white on rice. The Patriots are on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs concerned, even if they win out 9-7 is not going to be good enough to get in in the fiercely competitive AFC. There are 4 division winners and 3 wild card berths. The Chiefs are the AFC West Champs at 12-1. The Colts and Titans are tied at 9-4 in the AFC South and the Steelers (11-2) are holding a 2 game edge on the Browns (9-4) who are now surging and looking to grab the AFC North division crown. Our Dolphins currently have the #7 seed at 8-5. 10 wins is the only chance the Dolphins will be in the playoffs, so in essence, our last 3 games are essentially playoff games. First one is at home against a very familiar opponent.

There are always ebbs and flows in the long 16 game season, and despite the loss last week, I think our team is performing very well. The injuries are adding up, and I’d really love to have Kyle Van Noy back this week along with good Ole Bobby McCain. I’d love to have thumper Elandon Roberts back at LB too, he was missed last week. I wouldn’t mind having Ereck Flowers back either but only if he’s ready, I think Mt. Kindley has done well in his stead. It’s possible that Isaiah Ford could suit up for us this week, depending on how Jakeem Grant is doing with his hamstring injury. Lynn Bowden kind of exploded last week getting lots of action. Bowden was targeted 9 times and caught 7 passes for 82 yards. He also rushed once and the previous week against Cincy, Bowden caught 4 for 41 yards. Safe to say he’s part of the offense now.

As the pictures above portray, this game is the Mentor against his former Student. I don’t have to explain to all of you that Bill Belichick has always been a great coach and a master of making adjustments before the game, during the game and after the game. People will say look at him w/o Brady but Belichick created Brady. He tailored the offense to work with Tom Brady’s strengths and mask his weaknesses. In my opinion, only people who don’t really understand the game look at Tom Brady with his 30 TD’s and 11 INT’s and think that Brady was the reason for the Patriots success. The Buccaneers are just loaded with talent, there is no comparing the Bucs roster with the Patriots roster. RB Ronald Jones has come of age having his best season. WR’s Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown along with TE’s Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. The Patriots, besides having an inept passer at QB (Newton), the Patriots WR’s are Jakobi Myers, N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd along with RB’s Damien Harris and James White. The Bucs also have loads more talent on defense with LB’s Lavonte David and Devin White, DE’s Shaq Barrett and JPP and DT Ndamukong Suh. Folks, it’s not even close. I’m loathe to agree with Belichick himself when he said they sold out to win previous years and have left the cupboard somewhat bare this season. I’d say he speaks true.

My point in the last paragraph is we are basically trying to knock off Bill Belichick’s team, and although they might be outmanned, they have the football mind to keep them in this one. We have a disciple of that football mind, and if there was ever a time for the student to teach the teacher something, this is it. We need a strong gameplan from Brian Flores. We can’t allow Cam Newton and the RPO or whatever they employ to beat us. We have to be the better team Sunday. The NFL season is a game of attrition, no one knows who will be available at the end of the season and if we make it far enough that we’re in the playoffs, maybe we get Preston Williams back, Gaskin with fresh legs, maybe we get TE Mike Gesicki back as well. We MUST win this game, and then we move on to the next playoff game against the Las Vegas Raiders in their new house. Win this one, I like our chances against Da Raiders.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

    —————
TUA completes about 70% of his passes and scores TWO touchdowns. A 10-point win over the Cheats will always work for me. PS: I HIT the 10-point margin of victory on the nose BUT I was not the closest, pointwise.

  41. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Tua seems to have a semi side arm throwing motion, I think he has a hard time getting the ball vertical. he’s at his best rolling to his left when there is limited people in front of him.
he’s at his worst in a crowded pocket
i big qb like Herbert stands tall and has a great vertical passing game.
    so did Marino.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Could not agree more — when he roll left he threatens the whole scheme the opposing D has set up. Advantages to a big pocket guy too….. but just not Tua’s forte. He’s one of the QBs in the NFL’s new game like Mahomes.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

Mahomes has a great vertical game, IMO he’s not no where close to mahomes.
he’s more like a poor mans minchew.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Of course he’s not close to Mahomes….. least yet. Mahomes is the best QB in the NFL. Give the rook a chance. He can throw deep.

  42. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  43. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Texans have the Bengals next week before finishing with the Titans. If the Bengals can pull out a win, we will very likely end up at #6.

If the Texans get one more win, we could end up as low as #13. That Bengals game is huge.

  44. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

If the season had ended yesterday we would have faced the Steelers in the first round of the WC games, if the season ended now after the game the status hasn’t changed. Keep winning Miami.

  45. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

250 rushing yds for the Fins today. Hopefully Kindley is ok. That left side was dominating.

Finding a rushing game at this time of year is huge. It changes everything from an offensive perspective. If we can get Parker and Gesicki back to give our QB some weapons, and keep rushing the ball well, we can play with anyone.

  46. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Durham Smythe was our leading receiver today. That tells you all you need to know about what we had in the passing game.

  47. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I was sitting in winghouse watching the game, this guy was telling me how he was a Pats fan but now he’s a packers fan, told me he was a Cowboys fan in the 90’s.
I’m thinking the whole time, what a front runner!
Then i started thinking how wonderful that would be, you just change teams, go from the loser to an elite team.
never have to exp losing, no more heart break.

    unfortunately I cant do that.

Piggy, Toney is probably a second rounder.

  49. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I found it odd the Pets didn’t have a single penalty called in the 1st half even though I saw them get away with a few holds. Also of interest, every single timely penalty called against us got no replays. Oh, and I thought the refs did a fantastic job of spotting the ball just slightly against us or in favor of the Pets most of the game. Good job fellas!

  50. ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

it was a huge win for playoff consideration.
if we can get by the Raiders it may come down to @ Bills and they may have nothing to play for, The Ravens could also stumble.

  51. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Ok seriously what is the deal with our special teams? We have two great trick plays and both times our guys forget to report? How the hell does that happen?

  52. D's avatar D says:

We played the refs again today. Bullshit spot on that first challenge which was a first with forward momentum. Bullshit no n call on one of their bigger passed where their OL tackled and laid down for without allowing them to get up on on our DL. The contact down field where he fucking ran into our defender. Few others too I just can’t remember them clearly lol. Still we win we played meh, both good and bad things, but we scrapped back and won and that’s something previous team we have had wouldn’t have. On to LV.

    Vegas over/under was 6.
Team is looking good (especially D).
Lose the next 2 and still a good season.

  61. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This team just creates turnover opportunities. Our ability to force fumbles has really improved continually as the season has progressed. We only got one today, but just missed a couple of others. That Howard TD being overturned was heartbreaking in the moment. It was such a huge momentum shift.

We really didn’t have much go our way, and we made a few costly mistakes in the first half, but we very easily still could have had the lead at the half.

2nd half we came out and dominated.

  62. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Not sure about the rest of the season included, but as of now the Jags would win the SOS tiebreaker over the Jets for first pick if they win.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

That was some nice creativity from Gailey. I haven’t been a fan of his this year, but he called a really great game today. Our running game really made everything a lot easier.

Hats off to the entire offense. Oline played great in the run game, our collection of backup TEs and RBs all played really well.

  67. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

    TOP Today
    Pats — 22:34

Might explain why those runs were going for more extra yards in the 4th Q.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I was reading up on the board after the game ended. Rhino called it in the 2nd quarter (I believe) that our running game would wear on them late in the game.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Its amazing we ran the ball so well considering, you know, the Pats did not have to worry about our passing game because we don’t have a QB………….

    GO JETS!

  72. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

One of the things that has impressed me about Tua is his elusiveness in the pocket. He makes people miss with just a step. It’s very Marinoesque IMO. I thought the Pets did pretty well with pressuring the QB today, but Tua only took 2 sacks, and one of those was the aforementioned Ahmed missed blitz pickup. I also think the ball jumped out of his hand with more zip today.

He had the big mistake with the INT. That took points off the board. But overall I thought he made some very good throws in timely situations, he kept us ahead of the chains by evading sacks, and that TD scamper was nice.

He’s still a work in progress, but considering we were playing backups at literally every skill position, I thought he had a very nice game today.

Dieter stepped in nicely today, Really nice to have quality back-ups…and he is a Wisconsin guy! I know he was a 3rd rounder and maybe should be starter material, but we really have drafted well on the O-line lately….OD should love that!

ORob — we are past the trade deadline. Should we bench Tua and go with Fitz.? My only problem with that is we keep winning games with Tua.
    __________________________________________

the games we have won with Tua were dominated by other phases of this team, Defense, Special teams, today the running game.
If i’m Gruden i’m going to make Miami beat us with Tua’s arm, i’m not going to let the running game beat us.
it would appear that the coaching staff clearly agrees that Tua is struggling due to the play calling in the 2nd half’
I hope he gets better, there just seems to be something missing.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

So what would you do then? You are Flores and trying to win the next game as well as thinking about the future of the franchise. He does keep winning games though.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

I’m not sure the separation factor between Tua & Fitz? I do think Fitz is a better QB, does he give us the best chance to win?
the only negative i can see is that he’s not been playing for a while.
we can’t keep throwing for 150 yards and expect to be successful

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If I was Flores would be thinking my only possible QB of the future out of the two is Tua. I’d want to see what he has and figure out whether need to take another high up in the next draft. We aren’t going to the Bowl.

does anyone think Tua had a good game today passing?

what if we couldn’t run the ball today? do you think we win that game?

    can we rely on Tua?

It’s not like we have a stout running game, today was the first good running game we had.

i call it like i see it.

    • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

Did we win???. Team first. Stats get nothing! Marino provided stats…no Super Bowl win.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If we all say TUA SUCKS will it make you happy? He’s the QB of the 9-5 Dolphins.

    • D's avatar D says:

There is no way to know since the running game was working there was no reason for That to take things I. His shoulders. He has in a game or three at least held up his part of a team win. There have been games he carried us. In general he is doing his part and that’s good for a rookue. It doesn’t mean he sucks or should be replaced or isn’t doing better than .

Jalen Hurts has not been impressive in his few games, but that’s not a knock on him either. You are just going over the top being negative with Tua, our QB and overly complementary with other Rookies QBs also going through the same uos and downs.

It doesn’t seem like you want him to be our QB of the future, and I’m curious to know if any of these other guys were on our team if you wouldn’t be as critical of them. It seems more like you don’t want to be positive about the guy we have. Maybe it’s that you just like the security of us sucking every year.

      • ocalarob's avatar ocalarob says:

D, i would be critical of any qb that was playing as bad as Tua!
did you see the pick early? cost us! he should know better than to throw that ball, he took points off the board.

      • D's avatar D says:

I agree that was a mistake but that’s one of only a few he has really made. He has been very protective of the ball, but yeah he should have taken the sack and got back up for the next play. He will learn from it. Hell he pretty much did when almost the same thing happened later and he ran it in for the TD.

But Tua is the future of the franchise. Or maybe not. If so playing him will show we need to do something different. Fitz is close to retirement.
    __________________________________________________
I get what you’re saying however that shouldn’t be the mindset of the decision makers, Tua’s not the only player on this team, you have 21 other starters who are trying desperately to win, that’s why you play the guy that gives you the best chance to win,
I’m not overly impressed with Tua’s performance.
It’s been very underwhelming to say the least.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Rob – How many playoff games has Ryan Fitzpatrick won in his illustrious career? I’ll wait

Whether you’re serious or not, Fitzpatrick is definitely not better than Tua. He’s a streaky guy who has too many ups and downs. Tua has been more consistent not turning the ball over. He was playing out there today with a bunch of 3rd,4th, 5th and 6th string WR’s. We were missing our starting TE too. We needed to lean on the run game and thankfully it came through for us. That was playoff football out there today and we did what was needed. If you really would rather have the unpredictable Fitzpatrick as our QB, I’m disappointed in you.

Maybe i’m wrong, maybe he becomes the next Marino,
it just doesn’t feel that way.

we paid dearly for this guy, he’s no way living up to his draft status.

He’s the best QB prospect we have had since Marino and maybe that’s not saying much but the dude does things Tanny never did in all the years with us and he is doing it as a rookie. If this is the base then I am excited to see the ceiling.

The Dolphins remain the #2 scoring defense in the league. We are 20 points behind the Steelers who’ve yet to play.

The Dolphins are by themselves in 1st place in turnovers forced with 26. The Steelers are 1 behind with 25.

The Dolphins are currently tied for 5th in the league in point differential.

Rob, I don’t think Tua will be the next Marino, he’s not that echelon of arm talent. I’ll take the next Drew Brees though

The answer to the question is experience!

would you rather have the rookie making rookie mistakes during your outside wildcard run, or when you shooting for the division and a SB run?

    I can’t believe I even acknowledged this!
