Week 15 – Patriots @ Dolphins

This is what the season has come down to, Week 15, Brian Flores’s Dolphins at 8-5 fighting for a playoff spot against Bill Belichick’s Patriots. Earlier this year, the Patriots embarrassed the Dolphins 21-11 at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough. Cam Newton and the RPO time and time again fooled the Dolphins defenders to the tune of 15 carries for 75 yards and 2 TD’s by the NE QB. Dolphins QB Ryan Fitzpatrick was abysmal that day completing 23 passes of 30 attempts, except 3 of those completions were to NE defenders. We just looked unprepared and overmatched by Bill Belichick’s gameplan and Cam Newton’s execution of it. We guessed wrong so many times on that RPO and it was one of the more frustrating things to watch. Brian Flores will have to design a better gameplan this time.

So many things have changed since then. Ryan Fitzpatrick is no longer our starting QB, it’s now rookie Tua Tagovailoa. Neither Jordan Howard (Released) or Myles Gaskin (COVID-19 list) are playing this Sunday. RB DeAndre Washington will get the start and returning to the backfield is Matt Breida. Salvon Ahmed is a longshot to play as well. WR DeVante Parker is limited with a hamstring injury but will likely play, but Preston Williams who played Week 1 is still out. TE Mike Gesicki is also likely out with a dislocated shoulder. Patriots WR Julian Edelman is on IR/R which means he’s eligible to play should the Patriots decide to activate him but this is his first week of practice and he’s been out since October 31st when he elected to have surgery on his knee. He is unlikely to play.

Cam Newton is tenuously holding on to the starting job in NE as he has struggled in his last 3 games throwing for only 272 yards with 1 TD against 3 INT’s and that includes the 45-0 walloping of the LA Chargers. He did rush for 2 TD’s against the woeful Chargers. If I know Brian Flores, Cam Newton won’t be running all over us Sunday. We’ll be on him like white on rice. The Patriots are on the outside looking in as far as the playoffs concerned, even if they win out 9-7 is not going to be good enough to get in in the fiercely competitive AFC. There are 4 division winners and 3 wild card berths. The Chiefs are the AFC West Champs at 12-1. The Colts and Titans are tied at 9-4 in the AFC South and the Steelers (11-2) are holding a 2 game edge on the Browns (9-4) who are now surging and looking to grab the AFC North division crown. Our Dolphins currently have the #7 seed at 8-5. 10 wins is the only chance the Dolphins will be in the playoffs, so in essence, our last 3 games are essentially playoff games. First one is at home against a very familiar opponent.

There are always ebbs and flows in the long 16 game season, and despite the loss last week, I think our team is performing very well. The injuries are adding up, and I’d really love to have Kyle Van Noy back this week along with good Ole Bobby McCain. I’d love to have thumper Elandon Roberts back at LB too, he was missed last week. I wouldn’t mind having Ereck Flowers back either but only if he’s ready, I think Mt. Kindley has done well in his stead. It’s possible that Isaiah Ford could suit up for us this week, depending on how Jakeem Grant is doing with his hamstring injury. Lynn Bowden kind of exploded last week getting lots of action. Bowden was targeted 9 times and caught 7 passes for 82 yards. He also rushed once and the previous week against Cincy, Bowden caught 4 for 41 yards. Safe to say he’s part of the offense now.

As the pictures above portray, this game is the Mentor against his former Student. I don’t have to explain to all of you that Bill Belichick has always been a great coach and a master of making adjustments before the game, during the game and after the game. People will say look at him w/o Brady but Belichick created Brady. He tailored the offense to work with Tom Brady’s strengths and mask his weaknesses. In my opinion, only people who don’t really understand the game look at Tom Brady with his 30 TD’s and 11 INT’s and think that Brady was the reason for the Patriots success. The Buccaneers are just loaded with talent, there is no comparing the Bucs roster with the Patriots roster. RB Ronald Jones has come of age having his best season. WR’s Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, Antonio Brown along with TE’s Rob Gronkowski, O.J. Howard and Cameron Brate. The Patriots, besides having an inept passer at QB (Newton), the Patriots WR’s are Jakobi Myers, N’Keal Harry, Damiere Byrd along with RB’s Damien Harris and James White. The Bucs also have loads more talent on defense with LB’s Lavonte David and Devin White, DE’s Shaq Barrett and JPP and DT Ndamukong Suh. Folks, it’s not even close. I’m loathe to agree with Belichick himself when he said they sold out to win previous years and have left the cupboard somewhat bare this season. I’d say he speaks true.

My point in the last paragraph is we are basically trying to knock off Bill Belichick’s team, and although they might be outmanned, they have the football mind to keep them in this one. We have a disciple of that football mind, and if there was ever a time for the student to teach the teacher something, this is it. We need a strong gameplan from Brian Flores. We can’t allow Cam Newton and the RPO or whatever they employ to beat us. We have to be the better team Sunday. The NFL season is a game of attrition, no one knows who will be available at the end of the season and if we make it far enough that we’re in the playoffs, maybe we get Preston Williams back, Gaskin with fresh legs, maybe we get TE Mike Gesicki back as well. We MUST win this game, and then we move on to the next playoff game against the Las Vegas Raiders in their new house. Win this one, I like our chances against Da Raiders.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

Another strange stat – Lynn Bowden has as many receptions as Preston Williams, 18

BBM — was just well done, even if for sure been a bunch more folks on the road. And that bar is now, even if yeah know I mentioned Walker. Wonder how that crazy cat is doing.

  5. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Hey, any of you have one of those pellet grill/smokers? Or one of those 4 in 1 or 8 in 1 pellet/gas combos that do everything? Walmart has some massive ones that do everything by Pit Boss but there seem to be more bad reviews than I would like to see amongst the good reviews. I am looking at reviews on a bunch of them and can’t decide. I think I am leaning toward a pellet/gas gill/smoker combo If I am going to spend that kind of money on my next grill, I want to get it right. Thanks!

Shit, left Sonny out too. It’s hard to digest that all at once

It’s been the very best Star Wars story-telling since George Lucas, man. It takes place 5 years after Return of the Jedi… and some old faces have returned!!!

It’s Cheers redux. And don’t need Hollywood….more than enough dudes on this board. Mike E will play Sam, Herd Diane and then a bunch of competition for the other roles. Sorta thinking ORob will get Cliff though. 🙂

    BBM,
“No matter what any one says about the Dolphins, positive or negative, Tim tells them that everything is going to be ok.”
    I did a literal spit take …

  16. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Regarding the “Parsons” too good to not take post up above… IF available when we pick, I don’t doubt for a second that Flores would demand we pick him. Our D would be elite… spend the next 5 picks loading up on offense. Carolina and Atlanta are currently the only threats to take him ahead of us right now, imo.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    M13,
I just had this conversation with my daughter. She loves The Mandalorian. Well, she loves baby Yoda, anyway. So, I decided to watch it. I was disappointed. It was clearly a rehash/remake of every old Western I’d watched as a kid. None of the story lines were fresh or interesting. I figured out where every episode would take me 5 minutes in. The acting was, well, less than memorable. I will say Season 2 is, so far, better than Season 1, but it’s still very rote and predictable. With all the hype, I was really expecting something more. I still love it because it’s Star Wars, but I don’t get all the fuss. And, SPOILER ALERT!!!, he takes off his helmet already in Season 2. Sorry but that’s a major no-no for Mandalorians. Now he’s just some dude in a set of armor. Lol

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

According to Beasley, no path to the playoffs exists at 10-6 without a win by the Bengals, Jaguars or Jets against a playoff contender. — the teams that have the three worst records in the NFL (combined 4-33-1).

We have to win out fellas (and Herd).

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

M – What else is in Disney that I can sell to my wife? I have to give her incentive. We’re already paying a gazillion for DirecTv, which is a scam. If they lose the NFL package I’d drop them so fast their head would spin. I’ll still never forgive them years ago when HD became a thing and I had an SD dish, they wanted to charge me $999 for new HD dish. They were offering new customers $199, so I asked for that deal, they refused. I said I’ve been paying you for 8 years but you’ll give someone who hasn’t given you a cent an $800 discount? I cut them off for a few years until I couldn’t take not having Dolphins football

  20. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    stanger,
Does MikeE have the hair? It’s all about the hair for Sam Malone. I’m not sure Herd is neurotic enough to be Diane. She may be a better Rebecca. Rob as Cliff….no argument there. Lol

  24. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    From the Herald:

“Myles Gaskin, the team’s leading rusher, is eligible to return to practice this week after missing the last two games due to the NFL’s COVID-19 policy — assuming he gets the proper medical clearance.”

“And there’s more: When Flores said the injured Dolphins “were very close” to playing Sunday, he wasn’t kidding. We hear at least one, and probably several, of the team’s scratches could have played against the Patriots if it was an elimination game. The Dolphins took the calculated risk that they could win without them.”

So we felt good enough about our chances to beat the Pets without all our playmakers on offense, and not only were we good enough, we won by two scores.

Dolphins open up as 2.5 point favorites against the Raiders in Las Vegas…

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Seemed a little bit risky. The last 3 games including yesterday are elimination games

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I imagine the question of how effective they would be, would it impact their chances of progressing healthwise, and our needing them more healthy for the Raiders and Bills all came into play. And of course there’s always the possibility the story is crap, lol.

  25. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Opening line has the Dolphins as 2.5-point road favorites against the Raiders. And they are 7-7. Our team is getting a lot more respect this season.

  37. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Phelon, Thanks! Was looking for a pellet/gas combo so I have the option for a quick grill, but the Masterbuilt heats up really fast for charcoal from what I am reading. You must have the 560 series. How long have you had yours? How is it holding up as far as rust or any issues? If it works really well and is durable, I may step up and get the 800 series as it comes with the folding front stainless shelf and a flat top griddle insert with the extra grilling space. It’s about $700, but doesn’t seem like you get a whole lot more for the extra $200. When I do ribs, I like to do about 4 racks at a time. Can the 560 handle 4 full racks?

    Much appreciated!

Frank Clark (5 sacks) and Joey Bosa (7.5 sacks) bath made the pro bowl over Ogbah

    Kind of surprising

  40. ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

I like the uproar of RT17 getting snubbed for the Pro Bowl. He’s top 5 in the league in TDs, rating, and ypa. I believe TN is also the highest scoring team in the league too. TN averaged 16pts a game with Mariota and now over 30 since RT17 took over.

Say what you want about the guy, but he deserved a pro bowl this year. I will always cheer for him, heck of a guy.

    —————–
It’s all good, Randy. I don’t want to reveal spoilers for anyone here, but I HEAR what you’re saying. I’ve been thinking for a long time that “The Mandalorian” has been mirroring “Renegade” (starring Lorenzo Lamas) as a ‘western’ theme, what with a bounty hunter… hmmm.

“Renegade” was an incredible series — though unsung — IMO. RIP to Stephen J. Cannell, it’s creator. He made SO many great shows, man!

But seriously, the story-telling in “The Mandalorian” has been incredible… at least IMO. That last episode brought tears to my eyes, bud!

  43. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

BBM – I’ve had the one in the Keys since September so not long. No issues so far. Biggest thing is what charcoal to use and figuring out how to balance it with wood chunks. Lump charcoal gives the best taste but you have to make sure the bigger pieces don’t get wedged in the fire box. I like to put a few chunks of wood in first then a layer of charcoal, then a layer of wood chunks and finally fill it with charcoal. That’s usually good for about 6 hours at 225. It will scream up 700 very quickly if you are grilling steaks or anything that needs a sear.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I’ve done ribs, chops, chicken, a whole Turkey, pork shoulder…they were all good. Thermometer (probe) is accurate, maintains whatever temp you set it to even in near gale force winds.

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

It will definitely handle four racks. I’ve done two using only the bottom grate. I bought the 560 because I figured if it rust out in the salt air down here, I can replace it every year.

  44. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Looking at current draft order and tie breakers … we really need a Cincy upset over Houston for legit chance to end up at #4 in draft.
Atlanta (KC, TB) and Carolina (Wash, NO) will have an increase in SOS. A loss to Cincy would really drop Houston SOS if all three end up at 4-12. If Houston beats Cincy its a WILD ride of variables cuz lots of teams behind Houston with worse SOS.

    If the Steelers lose tonight
and the Steelers lose next week to the Colts
and the Bills and Chiefs both win next week

Then the Bills in week 17 will be locked into the #2 spot in the playoffs and will have nothing to play for.

  55. Randy's avatar Randy says:

As it stands right now, they would be the first team we would play in the WC round. KC would get the bye and we would play the steelers in the first round of the playoffs. 7 vs 2, 6 vs 3 5 vs 4

  67. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Holy crap, Bengals really won. This thing really has a great chance to set up perfectly for us.

We already know the Bills will beat the Pets, and the Chiefs will beat the Falcons.

So all we need is Pitt to lose to the Colts next week and the Bills will be locked in the #2 seed and have nothing to play for in week 17.

  68. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Nope they are clinched

  69. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Micah Parsons would be a nice addition to our defense. Come on Houston, continue to have a problem. LOL

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Houston probably won’t beat the Titans in week 17, so next week the Texans/Bengals game will probably be the difference between us picking around 5 or 6 and picking somewhere closer to 10-12.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I don’t see them at 10-12 at this point. I’d say they’re going to be 5-9.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

There are 6 teams right now with 5 wins, and most of them probably won’t win another. The Texans have a high SOS, so if they end up with 5 wins it could drop as far as 13. Right now, out of all those teams only 1 has a higher SOS.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

4 of those 5 win teams play each other, so two of them will end up ahead of Houston, and you figure one of those other teams might win a game so 8-10 is probably a better estimate for a 5 win Texans team.

  70. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We need to win out. I don’t see 10 wins getting in.

  71. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Titans and Colts play each other we win and will be tied with the loser going into 17. Not sure how we manage in a tie with either

  72. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    My bad 🙁

  73. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Titans have Packers , and Colts have Pittsburg this week.

  74. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

    Then Texans and Jags

  75. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Pitt also plays Cleveland , they could lose both .. win out and we tied there

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I haven’t looked up our tie breaker scenario with Pitt, but if we win out, there is a good chance we do end up tied. I’m going to look up those numbers.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

If I understand how they calculate common games correctly, the Steelers are 3 out of 5 and we’re 2 out of 4 in common games, so they hold the tiebreaker advantage with a .60 to .50.

  76. manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Win out and all good basically

  77. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We win our last 2 we’re in. I don’t think 10-6 will do it unless the Ravens lose to the Bengals. They’re 6-5 in the conference and we’re 6-4 but if we lose one and go to 6-5 in the conference I think the Ravens jump us if we’re tied at 9-6. Then we need help.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Yeah, everything we’re talking about is assuming we win out and you’re right they do jump us if we end up tied on conference record. The Ravens game this week doesn’t even matter in that regard, so really they only help us by losing to the Bengals.

If the Ravens lose to the Giants we still have to win out because it’s a non-conference loss and if we lose to the Bills our conference record ends up tied and we lose on SOV.

If the Ravens gift us by losing to the Bengals, we’ll take it, but that will be while we’re playing the Bills, so at that point we as fans have to assume we need to win out anyway.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! I was hoping what I wrote added up to what you said. LOL

The Giants game means nothing if we both finish 1-1 and the Ravens beat the Bengals. All I want is a chance to make the playoffs with a win at BUF.

Gotta beat the Raiders first. That’s a must win on Saturday night. You get the game on TV. LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, the league can’t do anything to take this one from me!

It would be nice to have Gaskin back along with Ahmed and Breida against the Raiders. I think we can run on them. Then it comes down to what Tua and the passing game can do.

On defense we have to slow down Jacobs and focus on limiting Waller who is a really dangerous TE.

Not sure if Carr or Mariota is starting but I’m not worried about either of them being the difference maker.

    • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

Fins should roll the Raiders with Mariota at QB. If they don’t, they dont deserve the playoffs at all.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. We’re already a 9 win team when we were absolute ashes last year. The situation this team is in is exactly what they need. This is what championship football is about. You have to win big games. We’re on the road the last two. You have to win on the road to be a top team. I love it!!!

      • ElephantRider's avatar ElephantRider says:

It is sure fun. I don’t have that feeling of dread watching them anymore.
And you’re right, look at all the rookies and young players getting experience.

        GO FINS

  79. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Between the start of the 2015 season and the end of the 2019 season, the Fins won only 5 games by a margin of 9+ points.

Out of 14 games this year the Fins have won 7 games by 9+ points.

    After last night
The Miami Dolphins are the number 1 scoring defense in the NFL

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s cool, but that and 10 wins aren’t getting us anywhere. Crazy how with 3 WC’s it’s gonna take 11

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

There are the same number of starters on that defense as wins we need

        Coincidence?

DeVante Parker, #11, will play and has a chance at 11 catches

        Coincidence?

December is the 11th month of the year if you don’t count January

        Coincidence?

        It’s coming…

Without looking, who leads our defense (tied) with 10 tackles for a loss?

What’s happening to the Steelers? Why are they foundering?

I didn’t want to go to your stupid bar anyway, I’ll hang with Doggie across the street laughing at all of you

  84. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I’m not going to keep you guessing, it’s Zach Sieler, who is tied at 10 with Kyle Van Noy

  85. son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Now with the Steelers imploding it looks like we’ll have to beat Buffalo just to go back up there and play them again.

Regarding the Mandalorian, it’s pretty hit and miss and the problem is they have several different directors doing different episodes. Like Randy said, it has it’s problems, but I’m higher on the show than he is. I’m not a fan of the casting sometimes. Bill Burr in several episodes really took me out of the lore and I’m a huge fan of Bill. I like the homage to the spaghetti westerns with Eastwood and I don’t see that as a detriment. The original trilogy ripped off Kurosawa samurai films. I didn’t like the Olyphant appearance either though. Saying it’s the best Star Wars live action since Lucas isn’t saying much though. Pretty much anything could be. lol. Although the cartoons and video games were pretty good.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think some episodes are really good

Others remind me of shows like Zena or Hercules, sort of cringeworthy

Sometimes the effects and costumes look amazing
      Other times corny

I like that they dipped into some of the stuff covered in the clone wars though. It is the best live action since the original triology. It has its moments and it’s generally fun to watch.

They have been so unable to deliver the lore in the live action movies, that the series gives me “New Hope”

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Yeah, I attribute that to the different directors they use for individual episodes. It’s hit or miss.

  89. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Even if we don’t make the playoffs, I won’t be disappointed in this season. I just hope our DC doesn’t leave for greener pastures.

  90. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

HOLY CRAP! The Bungles won last night!? I didn’t even check this morning assuming they had won! wow. Now we probably won’t play them?

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Now it looks like the Bills may be the # 2 seed, who we would play in the first round of the playoffs. That would suck, road game to Buffalo to get into the playoffs followed by a return trip a week later for the first round.

I don’t want to play the bills in the playoffs.

  92. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Son, only reason I forgot about you is because you were weren’t talking to anyone. You were glued to the TV watching the Reds complete a sweep of the Cardinals to win the division. That was the reason Cav was over in the corner by himself playing Donkey Kong.

Also, I got Stanger confused with David. Stanger was still trying to convince Steve that the Biden’s aren’t in bed with China. David was the one no one was listening to as he sat at the end of the bar talking to himself about the stock market.

I just remembered also that NJ was trying to get Gigi to do shots of Gatlinburg moonshine. She was out on the dance floor twirking to “Baby got Back”, but no one was watching…

That was when M13 was trying to get everyone on the dance floor. Also, Wyoming wasn’t requesting he play some Hank, he was requesting Garth Brooks, “I Got Friends in Low Places”, cause he thought it would fit the mood.

Doggy was over on the little side stage trying to strum his guitar to Baby Got Back.

Sorry, my memory is not as good as it used to be. 😉

first chance to comment today … but WTH Steelers? lmao. Jets over Rams, Cincy over Pitt … our loss to Denver isn’t looking quite as bad in comparison.

  98. Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

Bills own head to head tie break over Pitts. so if they “tie for 2nd” and we are the 7th seed, we’d play Bills in WC round.
