Dolphins hire 14th Head Coach – Mike McDaniel

What a difference a week makes! Not that all is perfect in Dolphinsland, but the arrow is pointing up this week after a very disappointing week with allegations of racism and tanking from our last HC, Brian Flores. Not going to give that nonsense another sentence. So now there is enthusiasm once again as young Mike McDaniel becomes the Dolphins Franchise 14th Head Coach. The Dolphins were very careful and want to portray a certain narrative, and the funny thing is I don’t mind it at all, not one bit. That’s because the narrative is that this offensive minded coach is coming here to work with our young QB that we drafted at #5 in 2020 NFL Draft. There will be no QB controversy this year, Tua is our guy, and Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier have the task of doing what they can to make Tua better, and this team better. Good we finally have our priorities straight and are moving in the right direction here.

Sometimes I think this fanbase deserves all this. I know this because we have social media that proves it every day I read twitter. A brief exchange I had with a so called “fan” of the Dolphins wants the Dolphins to get rid of this “POS” referring to Tua and stating that Watson to Miami is the only missing piece. I wish “fans” like this would find another team to latch on to because I don’t want people like this in my fanbase. I see politically how polarized people are, and it seems it’s the same for our fans. Either you like Tua or you hate him. How does this happen? I mean if you watch this team play every week, and you know the roster, how does that happen? It’s well documented we have the worst O-line in the NFL. We have no running game, and we had a revolving door of receivers opposite our one offensive star, WR Jaylen Waddle. Parker played games 1-4, and then missed games 5, 6, and 7. He came back (probably injured) for game 8 and then missed games 9 through 12. WR’s like Albert Wilson, Preston Williams, Mack Hollins and Isaiah Ford were all starters when Parker was out. So our offense consisted of the worst offensive line, a revolving door of WR’s (of which NONE would be starting in the NFL for any other team) opposite Jaylen Waddle, and the worst rushing attack in the NFL. Yeah, Watson is the missing piece. Can’t root for the good guy who we drafted, we need to get a lowlife sex offender here to be our QB. Unbelievable . . .

So now that McDaniel is here in Miami, he’s slowly building his staff. Josh Boyer will remain the Defensive Coordinator. Former 49ers Coach Jon Embree will come to the Dolphins from the 49ers where he was Assistant Head Coach and TE’s Coach and will resume that role with the Dolphins. Former Miami Dolphins WR Wes Welker joins the staff as Wide Reeceivers Coach. The Dolphins are interviewing fromer New Orleans Saints Coach Curtis Johnson for the Offensive Coordinator position. George Godsey, former Co-Co will be going to the Ravens, and former Secondary Coach Gerald Alexander was let go. So we’re moving and shaking and things are happening. The defense which was the far superior unit will have continuity. It was far from perfect but if you watched the games, the defense was much better than the offense. Now we need to get this offense humming and it won’t just be Mike McDaniel and Tua achieving that, Chris Grier will play a huge part in that as the NFL Free Agency period precedes the NFL Draft.

I feel like there’s a positive vibe in Miami. I know, don’t get too caught up in that because we’ve all seen this before. Maybe I’m naive, but I feel like McDaniel just might be the right guy. I feel good juju with this guy. I like that as an organization, we’re going to support our young QB who has done everything right. He worked his tail off to come back from that gruesome hip injury and then worked as hard as he could to be even better and stronger in this past offseason. It seems he didn’t have his HC’s support and really that’s a damn shame. Ther can be no bigger dysfunction to have your Head Coach not support one of the most important players on the field for your team. It seems the Dolphins have acknowledged this and it’s clear their is a plan to make this right, as there should be. Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel have to fix this O-line. Who we hire to be our O-line Coach is something I’m watching closely. Past the OL coaching hire though, we need to get a couple of anchors for this O-line. I’ve told you I’d love to see a guy like former Niners OG Laken Tomlinson here, or someone like him. Get a guy you know will be solid 17 games a season for you and you don’t have to think about it. I’ve also said I still believe in some of the young players we have, and I believe the right coaching will bring out the best of those guys. Don’t give up on LT Austin Jackson, RT Liam Eichenberg and even OG Solomon Kindley. While there’s still lots of work to do, a week has made a lot of difference. Last week was doom and gloom and this week is legitimate hope for the future of our team.

I love rap. And R&B, and Country, and hard rock, and heavy metal, punk, blues, Indie..hell even pop (probably a few more genres I’ve missed)

If everyone around me is stoked on a song and I’m not feeling it I usually ask myself what I’m missing, not what’s wrong with the people around me who are digging it. All good. Music taste is ultimately subjective but how many of you have met anyone who thinks that they don’t have great taste in music? The heart wants what it wants.

Congrats to the Rams. Thats two great teams out there. An aging, doggedly Homer finfan like me could only dream of having a team like one of those. 🙌👏🤙

People will kill me for this, but I believe Stafford will go to the Hall of Fame someday.

Great to see you back. I love all great music but I must say some of it sucks. I do appreciate peoples talents and I’m glad they have a platform to put it out. But what you need to know is the Dog still rocks 🐕🎸🎼🎼🥃🥃

  59. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Jahn – I agree with Stafford. I was rooting for him and the Rams and was disappointed how he played last night. The one INT to the Notre Dame WR Skowronek wasn’t totally his fault, but I was hoping for him to have a fantastic game, and it wasn’t. I would have felt better rooting for the Rams if he did.

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Considering how little run support his line gave him, I thought Stafford played well enough to win.
That last drive he just willed them down the field, even though everyone knew every throw was going to Kupp, just about.
I reluctantly give Stafford a pass on those 2 INTs. Pardon the pun.
The first one was 3rd and 14 I think, and he got flushed from the pocket, so he threw it for a high risk TD, and the DB made a better play on the ball than his WR. So it was like a punt with little time left in the half, I think.
The second one was the WR was not up to the moment.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

He also made a terrible throw to a wide open Van Jefferson in the end zone. It’s not like he played awful, I just wanted him to have a great game. The crowd I watched with were basically saying Stafford is a good QB, not a great QB. I think he’s better than good.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Then again, I just compared him to Matt Ryan and they’re pretty similar, Ryan has better stats actually. I may have to rethink this. I don’t think of Matt Ryan as an elite QB, so I shouldn’t consider Stafford one either

      • bookman11's avatar bookman11 says:

I feel the same way about Stafford. I wanted him to have a great game in that moment, and he didn’t necessarily deliver throughout the game. I will say that he was clutch at the end……well him and Kupp.
He has has pretty good statistical career, and now has as many SB rings as Rogers, kind of makes you wonder what would it have been like if he actually had decent teams in Detroit.

  61. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

After all the exciting playoffs games we had this offseason, this Super Bowl seemed pretty bland. I was hoping the Bengals would get their first ring, but can’t be mad at who won. Happy Stafford was able to get a ring after suffering in Detroit all those years, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and the other guys who deserved it. In the end, it came down to the Rams being able to adjust and get their stars in a position to succeed when they needed them most. The Bengals didn’t.
Now we have the whole offseason to hear what’s going on with Flores to overshadow our new coach. Fun. Bring on the mock drafts. Get your tradey pants on.

  62. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah I forgot about that overthrow in the EZ. Unless Stafford can guide the Rams back and win another SB, I would not put him in the HoF. I compare him to Rivers, only in that sense, not QB style, just production. He does throw too many INTs.
Rogers has elevated a so so Packers team year after year, and won 4 MVPs, so he is elite, unlike Stafford, even though his teams were way worse than the Packers. He didn’t take them far enough, like Rivers didn’t in SD.

  63. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I have seen some very attractive mock drafts, including one where Linderbaum falls to us, just because no one actually needs a first round center this year except us.
Would you trade X and our first to the Giants for their first, so we can take Linderbaum?

  64. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Linderbaum keeps dropping, I keep picking him….

    29: R1 P29 C Tyler Linderbaum – Iowa
    50: R2 P18 WR Jalen Tolbert – South Alabama
    101: R3 P37 RB Isaiah Spiller – Texas A&M
    120: R4 P16 LB Troy Andersen – Montana State
    124: R4 P20 EDGE Sam Williams – Ole Miss
    158: R5 P15 TE Jake Ferguson – Wisconsin
    199: R6 P21 K Cade York – LSU
    222: R7 P3 FB Clint Ratkovich – Northern Illinois

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

The game was decided on by which team overcame a key injury

Rams weren’t the same after OBJ went down, but had the entire second half to figure it out, Skowronek has been awful all year and aost cost them the game

Burrow’s injury cost Bengals a couple of drives late, he wasn’t the same and couldn’t provide the magic he has in the past

Non penalty call on Bengals long TD got them back in the game, late penalties called cost them the game, but RZ D was just horrible grabbing receivers on every play, as if there were only about 20 seconds left not 1:20 and yardage/down were less important than time

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think we could play with those two teams though. Our d could get sacks on the Cincy OL, too. Especially with our lock down CBs making the QB hold the ball. If we could keep Mixon from getting first downs and breaking a long one, we could kkep them in the low 20s.

You can tell by the hires the focus is to improve the run game and OL

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ya think!? LOL HC is a run game coordinator, OC is a run game coordinator, Oline coach….Well was the oline coach and was a run game coordinator.

  79. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Smith was the Chargers’ run-game coordinator and offensive line coach and is well regarded for his development of offensive linemen and tight ends. He spent one year working for the Chargers.

Smith, 40, began his career as an offensive assistant for Miami of Ohio in 2004 and 2005, then spent four years at Butler, first as offensive line coach and then as offensive coordinator.

He was assistant offensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints from 2010 to 2014. During those five seasons, the Saints allowed just 143 sacks, third-fewest in the NFL. Smith then took a job as tight ends coach of the Chicago Bears and spent three seasons there (2015 through 2017).

He then spent three years as the Raiders’ tight ends coach (2018 through 2020) before leaving for a job with the Chargers, where he helped develop rookie standout guard Rashawn Slater and stabilize an offensive line that improved considerably from 2020.

  80. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I have some hopes for one rookie we drafted last year in Larnel Coleman. He is familiar with this scheme and is athletic. He played both LT and RT in college. I know we need to add talent but with all this OL coaching experience we have now, I would not be surprised if someone on our depth chart rises like Coleman.

    From a pre-draft interview:

“JM: There’s a lot of interest in you and it’s easy to see why. Tell me about the scheme you played in at Massachusetts, and how you think that experience will help you at the next level.

LC: We were an outside zone type of offense. We ran a bunch of wide zone. With how NFL offenses are operating nowadays, you see a lot of those wide zone concepts now. That’s how teams wanna run the ball in today’s game. We based our offense around that. That experience is definitely gonna help me at the next level.”

He comes from an outside zone offense.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Robert Jones is a wild card. He is less athletic but is a big mauler and more of a power gap OL.

Same has to be said for Solomon Kindley who is also a power gap OL.

Question will be is if they have enough athleticism to play in an outside zone system.

That’s a little north of what I’d project: thinking more like $6-7M/per, as Penny’s injury history must be considered.

Adam Pankey is more of a power guy with average athleticism.

Lastly is OT/OG Kion Smith who comes from an outside zone system but is probably the biggest project of them all.

Looks like we got our OC for 2022, but what about for 2023?

Are we retaining Charlie Frye as QB coach or did we have a hire that I missed?

I don’t want to sign Penny. Just my 2 cents.

I see what you did there! 🙂

I think it would make cents (sense) to sign Penny to a ‘prove-it’ deal.

I don’t really see Ross going anywhere or being punished….

  91. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

No money changed hands. Ross might get suspended or have to pay a 100,000-500,000 fine.

  92. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

So Frank Smith is our new OC. I wonder if there will be an emphasis on the running game. 😉

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Thank god it won’t be Tua’s arm strength!!!!

      Is that pettty?

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The arm strength thing has always been overstated. He can throw it plenty far enough for big plays, we just didn’t do it a lot because he barely has time to throw the short stuff a lot of the time. Hopefully improving the OL and putting a good run game together will open up play-action big plays and put all of that to bed.

  93. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Nice one Goodell, we’re going to take this very seriously, anything that ruins the integrity of the game

Maybe he forgot how they fixed the SB

    What an fn hypocritic

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

You think it was fixed? They allowed a 75 yard TD for the Bengals that should have been called back due to a face mask by Higgins on Ramsey.

  94. Ken's avatar Ken says:

The only way Ross will be punished is if something comes out that so damages the brand that 31 other owners think something has to be done. Goodell’s power comes from the ownership and they won’t punish one of their own unless it’s impacting their wallets

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Flores is going to lose all of his claims. Now he’s accusing the Texans of not hiring him because of his lawsuit. So when things go bad for Flores he blames everyone but himself.

I think it’s obvious he was the one behind the Watson trade rumors. So he wanted a new QB because he didn’t believe in Tua. Well coach, you were 11-17 without Tua and 13-8 with him. So what’s up with that?

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Its crazy that he feels that job was his to the extent he added them to the lawsuit. It makes me wonder if they actually told him it was his job before they were done interviewing other candidates…which would be pretty ironic, lol.

  96. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When I think about how much I liked about Brian Flores as our HC compared to now, it bums me out. He’s showing himself to be very petty and insecure man. I bet that if he never filed any of this lawsuit stuff, he probably would have been hired as a HC. He screwed himself. He should have just moved on. He loves to say we need change because he really struggles to articulate it. So he basically just played the race card and continued the social and political divide we have in this country. Was that the change he was looking for?

The Miami Dolphins were the front runners with the Rooney rule – Flores black HC, Chris Grier black GM, Marvin Allen black Asst. GM and Reggie McKenzie a black Senior Personnel Executive. Now that’s ironic.

One more thing, have any of those guys re-signed?

  97. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think Flores is unhinged, and I also think his lawyers suck. It’s like theoretically, Flores would say “The Houston Texans are bunch of idiotic monkeys” before they decided on their Head Coach. Then the Texans hire Lovie Smith and he sues the Texans for not hiring them because he called them a bunch of idiotic monkeys. It all seems so ridiculous, doesn’t it?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Unhinged is a good word. He’s constantly looking for scapegoats. He might have to wait quite awhile to become a HC in the NFL again. Maybe never!

Looking at what happened to Kaepernick, I wouldn’t bet on him getting another Head Coach position. He would probably have to take an assistant job and prove himself again

      • herdfan's avatar herdfan says:

Flores also alienated himself from Belichick by releasing those text messages. He would likely have gotten another head coaching job at some point, if not this next year. Surely if Gase got another shot after leaving Miami, anything could happen. Belichick would probably have given him a good recommendation. Now? Not a chance. He didn’t burn bridges, he incinerated them.
