Dolphins hire 14th Head Coach – Mike McDaniel

What a difference a week makes! Not that all is perfect in Dolphinsland, but the arrow is pointing up this week after a very disappointing week with allegations of racism and tanking from our last HC, Brian Flores. Not going to give that nonsense another sentence. So now there is enthusiasm once again as young Mike McDaniel becomes the Dolphins Franchise 14th Head Coach. The Dolphins were very careful and want to portray a certain narrative, and the funny thing is I don’t mind it at all, not one bit. That’s because the narrative is that this offensive minded coach is coming here to work with our young QB that we drafted at #5 in 2020 NFL Draft. There will be no QB controversy this year, Tua is our guy, and Mike McDaniel and Chris Grier have the task of doing what they can to make Tua better, and this team better. Good we finally have our priorities straight and are moving in the right direction here.

Sometimes I think this fanbase deserves all this. I know this because we have social media that proves it every day I read twitter. A brief exchange I had with a so called “fan” of the Dolphins wants the Dolphins to get rid of this “POS” referring to Tua and stating that Watson to Miami is the only missing piece. I wish “fans” like this would find another team to latch on to because I don’t want people like this in my fanbase. I see politically how polarized people are, and it seems it’s the same for our fans. Either you like Tua or you hate him. How does this happen? I mean if you watch this team play every week, and you know the roster, how does that happen? It’s well documented we have the worst O-line in the NFL. We have no running game, and we had a revolving door of receivers opposite our one offensive star, WR Jaylen Waddle. Parker played games 1-4, and then missed games 5, 6, and 7. He came back (probably injured) for game 8 and then missed games 9 through 12. WR’s like Albert Wilson, Preston Williams, Mack Hollins and Isaiah Ford were all starters when Parker was out. So our offense consisted of the worst offensive line, a revolving door of WR’s (of which NONE would be starting in the NFL for any other team) opposite Jaylen Waddle, and the worst rushing attack in the NFL. Yeah, Watson is the missing piece. Can’t root for the good guy who we drafted, we need to get a lowlife sex offender here to be our QB. Unbelievable . . .

So now that McDaniel is here in Miami, he’s slowly building his staff. Josh Boyer will remain the Defensive Coordinator. Former 49ers Coach Jon Embree will come to the Dolphins from the 49ers where he was Assistant Head Coach and TE’s Coach and will resume that role with the Dolphins. Former Miami Dolphins WR Wes Welker joins the staff as Wide Reeceivers Coach. The Dolphins are interviewing fromer New Orleans Saints Coach Curtis Johnson for the Offensive Coordinator position. George Godsey, former Co-Co will be going to the Ravens, and former Secondary Coach Gerald Alexander was let go. So we’re moving and shaking and things are happening. The defense which was the far superior unit will have continuity. It was far from perfect but if you watched the games, the defense was much better than the offense. Now we need to get this offense humming and it won’t just be Mike McDaniel and Tua achieving that, Chris Grier will play a huge part in that as the NFL Free Agency period precedes the NFL Draft.

I feel like there’s a positive vibe in Miami. I know, don’t get too caught up in that because we’ve all seen this before. Maybe I’m naive, but I feel like McDaniel just might be the right guy. I feel good juju with this guy. I like that as an organization, we’re going to support our young QB who has done everything right. He worked his tail off to come back from that gruesome hip injury and then worked as hard as he could to be even better and stronger in this past offseason. It seems he didn’t have his HC’s support and really that’s a damn shame. Ther can be no bigger dysfunction to have your Head Coach not support one of the most important players on the field for your team. It seems the Dolphins have acknowledged this and it’s clear their is a plan to make this right, as there should be. Chris Grier and Mike McDaniel have to fix this O-line. Who we hire to be our O-line Coach is something I’m watching closely. Past the OL coaching hire though, we need to get a couple of anchors for this O-line. I’ve told you I’d love to see a guy like former Niners OG Laken Tomlinson here, or someone like him. Get a guy you know will be solid 17 games a season for you and you don’t have to think about it. I’ve also said I still believe in some of the young players we have, and I believe the right coaching will bring out the best of those guys. Don’t give up on LT Austin Jackson, RT Liam Eichenberg and even OG Solomon Kindley. While there’s still lots of work to do, a week has made a lot of difference. Last week was doom and gloom and this week is legitimate hope for the future of our team.

I think Flores had some pent up anger and expressed it in the most inappropriate ways and moments. Too bad.

Mike, I’m not sure a team wants Flores on their staff. He called out Belichick and NE too where he honed his skills. What he did was what we call, “burning bridges”.

    Are you serious, Clark?!! 😉

Steve Ross is problemo numero uno!

I can’t defend what I don’t know regarding Brian Flores’ lawsuit against the NFL (nor am I trying), but I can damn sure prove that Steve Ross has kicked EVERY hire of his in the ballsack when firing him.

In my eyes, Steve Ross has a track record to be removed from ownership. We’ll see what happens.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But people are still willing to join the organization and nobody resigned. After Miami, Ross will never own a team again, he’s too old. Flores as a HC is another issue. Not sure why you mix that up. I’m surprised you didn’t bring up Goodell as well. LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Fuck Steve Ross and Roger Goodell.

Right! And once they’re both gone, what do you do then? Do the flowers smell better, is the water cleaner, did they prevent you from falling in love with someone?

I root for the brand of the team. I’m a Dolphins fan. I don’t have any memorabilia of Ross or Goodell. How do they affect your life? How is Ross responsible for a handful of plays that were the difference in making the playoffs and not?

It really feels like the nfl has had a lot of scandals over the last 15 years

How does one person prevent the actions of thousands without being a dictator? It’s mostly because of the information age. Before the internet and social media, we really didn’t know what was going on behind the scenes in all walks of life. Now everyone has become a moral superior and a phony.

Let’s look at it this way. The NFL fires Goodell and replaces him with a new commissioner, and the Dolphins have a new owner. Will that change your views on FA and your mock drafts?

Then it clearly wasn’t a racial thing against Flores, it’s just business as usual for Ross. The more I think about this lawsuit, the more I see Flores as a bitter, desperate guy. His claims look weaker than our O-line

Its crazy that he feels that job was his to the extent he added them to the lawsuit. It makes me wonder if they actually told him it was his job before they were done interviewing other candidates…which would be pretty ironic, lol.

    _________

That’s pretty much what happened with the Giants job. He gets fired from Miami and Mara calls him up to say that he’s their guy before they even hire a GM. GM comes in and starts conducting searches. Gives job to the guy he knows the best because no one else proves their case well enough. Owner concedes decision to new GM as not to neuter him.

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

ok so the Bengals OL cost them the game … but … Aaron Donald is possibly the best player in the NFL and Von Miller is a former Super Bowl star, and Raheem Morris still had to implement a weird overload to free up his rushers.
My point is that I’d be fine with having a great young QB and 3 stud WRs and a bully RB and TE and a run stuffing DL and all that so that my team gets to the Super Bowl, even if we then lost like Cincy did.
Meaning if we get another big star at WR and RB and a RT who can actually stop a pass rusher, we could be in the next SB, even if we lost because we have a young and iffy OL.
What was Cincy’s record the previous 2 years?
We even have a 30 something HC from that same tree as the two in the SB.
So I’m giving us my permission to draft and sign as above along with an ILB. We don’t have to bring in 4 new OL and not get Waddle and Tua some help at RB and WR. Big Time Help.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We can bring in 4 new OL, don’t think we have to, but drafting OL this year seems too been there done that for me, we need exp

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Here’s something to ponder. Our O-line was rated the worst in the NFL. Burrow was sacked 70 times (including the playoffs) 51, times during the regular season. For contrast, Tua was sacked 20 times in 12 1/2 games. Someone knows how to get the ball out quick and help his O-line and not hold the ball too long, and someone else doesn’t.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Inspite of that Burrow was still damn good, because he stayed mostly in the pocket and waited for his receivers to break free, making him dangerous, if the rush didn’t get there

By contrast Tua bailed to elude the rush, wouldn’t have it any other way for Tua

Big Ben was able to have a long career doing what Joe is doing, but he’s much bigger, think Joe breaks down much sooner, if this continues

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Actually Mike, we saw Burrow do just that in 1st half, and for the game his release was quicker than the quickest QB, Big Ben, on the season, but when he does that he’s not as dangerous

Burrow made his living by holding the ball a long time, not sustainable IMO

  17. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Linderbaum dropped to me again, but I spitefully refused to pick him this time. LOL

I know ONE Dolphins fan who will be happy with this draft.

    AM PICKS
    29: R1 P29 WR Jameson Williams – Alabama
50: R2 P18 RB Kenneth Walker III – Michigan State
    101: R3 P37 LB Brandon Smith – Penn State
    120: R4 P16 RB James Cook – Georgia
    124: R4 P20 C Dohnovan West – Arizona State
    158: R5 P15 TE Jake Ferguson – Wisconsin
    199: R6 P21 FB Clint Ratkovich – Northern Illinois
    222: R7 P3 K Cade York – LSU

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I think Tua did an admirable job of moving around IN THE POCKET, what there was of one, before he bailed. I don’t think Tua was running around like Russell Wilson out there.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tua did all he could, without taking too much pounding

We saw in Bills and Falcons games what happens to Tua, when he stays in the pocket too long, sacks, hits, ints, it’s not his game

Tua could do what Burrow did this year, but he’d likely have 20 ints and 50 sacks, and out hurt several more weeks

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We can’t worry about what other teams did to have success, every situation is unique and should be handled that way

McD has said, he’ll fit the O to match its players, he doesn’t mean change scheme though

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

good point, call plays that put guys in good spots, not ditch the entire offense it it works.
Still will need to replace some players. Kindley for example might not be a good fit as the type guard we need now. Duke Johnson, I’m not sure about. I’d try him and Lindsay, but I defer to McDaniel. He’ll know just from tape whether those guys will work or not.

  20. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We can have success even without Tua, with a game manager backup, if we get an avg OL, a quality RB and a quality WR

Reid Sinnett could’ve been that guy, but Flo fucked that up too

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Burrow expressed his confidence that his young team could wind up playing in multiple Super Bowls, as Marino did, but I’d say he’ll have a career closer to Luck’s

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think of Marino as a one and done Super Bowl guy, even though he was (over)-confident that he was gonna be there every year, and I think Burrow might end up that way, too. A Luck trajectory is also possible.

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That’s another good looking draft Rock, especially the top 5.
I notice all your mocks include a Kicker. Are you so done with our current guy?

  23. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

All I meant was, you can get to the SB with a mediocre line, if you have great skill players.
    Not the other way around.
Look at New Orleans. Best OL in the NFL? We beat them.
Would we have beaten them if we traded them Tua for Terron Armstead?
    just for that game?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Yeah but NO was missing a lot of guys in our game

Tua was great in that game considering the heavy pass rush, he did what he had to, aided of course by our D and their inept O

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not sure how Ross would lose the franchise based on an alleged, attempted tank, when we know the cheats cheated in their SB with the Rams and Krapp was able to keep his franchise

You could say Krapp had nothing to do with it, but I don’t think Payton had anything to do with Bountygate, but it was under his watch

Really don’t care, if Ross loses the team, just don’t want to forfeit any picks

It’s a point of emphasis. I’m making sure we have guys that can teach what we need to teach. We add players that are of value and we emphasize stuff.

  31. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Asked what contributed to that decision, he said: “You learn that when something is not broke, and there are also relationships with players that come into it…And I relied on people who hired me who have been in the building with him. It’s a calculated decision that’s very informed. The proof is in the pudding. It’s a top 10 defense last year that I would not want to play against. Can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

If I’m Tua I’m watching tons of video on the 49ers offense to get a feel for what he’s going to be running. As McD has said, he’ll revise some things to the talent we have, but the basic concepts will still remain.

I was thinking earlier how and when info can be exchanged, but that’s on point. Agree.

Yeah as far as playbooks and coaching, there is a CBA rule, but nothing stopping Tua from getting the all 22 game film of the 49ers.

The Dolphins also get a 2 week head start in offseason workouts because we have a new HC.

  34. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

“I’m not sitting here concerned with how good Tua can be,” McDaniel said at his introductory news conference last week. “I’m concerned with, as a collective unit, what we can grow together because that’s what wins football games.”

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m interested to see which players on offense remain in the new system, because it’s going to be different than this past season. If we ran the RPO 75% of the time last year, I’d say it will be maybe 25% of the time this season. Tua is good at it and it makes the opponent have to practice for one more thing. I think we’re going to be under center more. But shotgun is prevalent in every offense these days. The blocking techniques are going to be totally different. I’m looking forward to seeing how it pans out.

Surprised Ogbah or X wasn’t on the list….hmmm

  38. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Obviously Mike McDaniel is changing the offense, we knew that would be the case if he was hired. But what I really liked was that he was willing to retain most of the defensive staff including Josh Boyer as DC. We play a unique style of defense and he knows the players that we brought in to play this way. We do have a lot of players to either re-sign or replace, but we have a solid core on defense to continue building around. “Can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em.”

    Here you go OD

But not if Vegas pulls a “Kucherov” and puts someone on LTIR for the rest of the season. Oh, and looky here: it just so happens that Mark Stone’s bad back is acting up on him again. Never mind that he just played in the All-Star Game, just as a decision on Jack Eichel is nearing, Vegas has a guy who, if he went on LTIR, who suddenly has the bad back again (he’s missed games with this already this season, and as someone with a horrible back, I know how it can come and go). But the fact is, this is setting up to be another skirt around the cap rules by a team entering the playoff stretch.

Vegas could suddenly declare Stone out for the rest of the season, fit Eichel in with no problem because Stone’s cap hit ($9.5 million) would come off the books per LTIR regulations and still get BOTH players for the playoffs. Why? Because there’s no cap in the playoffs. Just like the Lightning did with Kucherov last season, the Golden Knights can essentially skirt the rules by declaring Stone unfit to play for the rest of the regular season, then activate him for the playoffs, when the cap goes away. The Lightning had a playoff roster last spring of about $99 million – while other teams had $81.5 million payrolls.

  43. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It looks like Eric Studesville is the only survivor as a coach on offense – RBs coach.

Our run game was not good most of the season but in some games we ran really well with a lot of different backs. Seems like McD thought that wasn’t on the RBs coach.

  44. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Just watched Gesicki 2020, he’s a WR and not a TE and McD will get him to block like a WR

He should be playing 50 plays a game, he can help run block too, better than most WRs

If we don’t re-sign him Grier should be fired

We have 2 WRs right now Waddle and Bowden, 4 counting Gesicki and Hollins, which should both be re-signed, add 1 more thru draft, then Hurns and/or Ford whatever they want to do

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Steve, McD hires a long time coach who’s been an NFL OC for 15 years to be the passing game coordinator and QBs coach. That’s a quality hire.

All of the coaches McD has hired on offense have experience in the WCO principles. At its best it’s supposed to be 50/50 run/pass ala 30-30.

  46. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Lynn Bowden might be our Deebo Samuel version but it’s hard to match Deebo. I get that comparison though. Bowden is a RB/WR hybrid type. He is signed through 2023 for peanuts in the big scheme of NFL salaries. Why not see if that works?

DeVante Parker is still very affordable signed through 2023. His durability is always a concern but he’s still productive when he plays as a big WR.

Mack Hollins, I think we all want to see us re-sign him as an Ace ST’s guy and a reliable big WR when needed.

Jaylen Waddle is just getting started and he’s already really good.

How about adding a big upgrade over the rest of the depth? Add another playmaker.

  47. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Grabbing Bevell at QB coach and passing game coordinator was a great pickup if we got him.

  48. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

Bring back Duke and Lindsay. Draft a guy in rounds 2,3, or 4.

  49. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

sb7, I’m not sure what to think of the RB position. I watched Mike Shanahan turn any RB into a 1,000 yard rusher and now we see anyone can run as a 49er. I’ve always been intrigued by how that works. It all starts with the OL.

  50. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In the past I mentioned Jeff Ireland just acquired players, but didn’t know how to build a team of complimentary players

Agree Tim, McD appears to be building a team, starting with the coaching staff

How long has it been since we’ve had the right coaches in place to teach the players the system?

You could say Flores did that on D. Some of these videos showing our cover 0 asking which guys are rushing out of the 7 on the LOS, makes it clear of his accomplishment

We may actually get/have it on both sides of the ball

Glad McD doesn’t have an ego and try to change the D

Hated when we called running plays on 1st and 2nd down with Marino, because it only gave us 1 down to pick up a 1st and he wasn’t the most accurate, give him 2 or 3 downs to get a 1st and he was awesome

By comparison Tua is accurate and should thrive with a running game in this offense, then throw the occasional intermediate passes to Parker/Gesicki

Don’t think Jimmy G fit the Shanahan O, his accuracy was all over the place, and they still won

Don’t see why Tua couldn’t be the second coming of Joe Montana, stronger arm, more accurate, at least as good pocket pressence/mobility

Steve Young certainly was better than Montana, at least stat wise and ceiling

Think Tua is somewhere in between

Wonder what McD has in store for Waddle?

Hope he moves him to the outside, between Bowden and Gesicki we should be fine in the slot

Surely Waddle will play some slot, but needs to primarily be outside

  60. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Who will Tampa play at QB if they don’t get Brady back?
Where will Aaron go or will he stay at GB? Tampa?
At least they have their next guy at both GB and SF, but there will be lots of unknown movement of QBs, including Pitt. Wash, Giants, Panthers, Broncos, Saints, Texans all need QB solutions.
Now we see Indy may be giving up on Wentz. What about Mini, Chicago, and Detroit?
I only say this because it will affect FA and the draft, although neither place has much to offer at QB.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tampa would have to gut their roster to fit Rodgers in or use some creative future year Magic Johnson type of move

Think FA is going to see a lot of QBs moving around from Goff to Wentz to Cousins

Doubt Rodgers goes anywhere, same for Russell Wilson

  61. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I like many of you have been reading all kinds of articles on the philosophy of the new coaches. The more I read the more certain I am becoming that Gesicki has played his finial season in Miami.

I saw the team pumping up Smythe on their twitter account too. Just more tea leaves to read.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

McD could see his potential as the mismatch weapon he is and bring him back. McD has bragged about his receivers leading the league in YAC. I don’t see why this offense and Gesicki can’t exist together other than cost to keep him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Agree, but don’t think cost will be an issue, we have plenty of cap space and next year it’s going through the roof

Gesicki mostly plays WR anyways, so his lack of blocking as a TE only means he won’t play there often, unless McD puts a whoopin on him in camp

If McD likes his receiving ability he’ll be re-signed

Also McD likely feels he can get the most out of Gesicki with the coaches he’s brought in, so…

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I know just what you mean and it could go that way.
      But
Hey we need a slot WR so Waddle doesn’t get killed in there, and so we can send him out on deeper routes.
Just move Gesicki to slot. He lined up in the slot or out wide like 75% of plays last year anyway, I think. Also he could be that blocking WR McDaniel likes. Even Gesicki could block a DB.
Just list him at TE to save money and to confuse the DCs, like they listed Deebo as a WR, even though he was a RB half the time.
That way we would only carry 5 guys listed as WR.
At one point last year we had 5 TEs and 7 WRs. That’s crazy, but we only listed 2 or 3
      RBs.
This would all feed into the way McDaniel draws up plays that look different but are really the same or that look the same but are actually different. (So he said in an interview)

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

If we got another slot WR, when would he play?

Waddle, Bowden and Gesicki is more than enough to man the slot

If Preston is re-signed I might want to see him get some slot reps too

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

meaning to move or count Gesicki/Bowden as our slot guy, not draft one

  62. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Russell Wilson has a no-trade clause in his contract, but the rumors have been circling since last year that he wants out of Seattle. Makes me wonder if he can force his way to the team he wants.

I just remember how Favre and Montana got pressured out.
    Brady, Payton M., Rivers, Esiason,
    Even Johnny U right?

  64. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Linderbaum dropped to me again (and again) but I ran past him to get my card in for our new pro bowl LB Devin Lloyd. (we only have two under contract so far for next season)

I had to move up in round 3 to get Alec Lindstrom giving up my 2nd 4th round pick to get him. (Figure he is a good fit for our new Oline coach.)

    TEAM PICKS
    29: R1 P29 LB Devin Lloyd – Utah
50: R2 P18 RB Kenneth Walker III – Michigan State
    89: R3 P25 C Alec Lindstrom – Boston College
    120: R4 P16 WR Calvin Austin – Memphis
    158: R5 P15 LB Micah McFadden – Indiana
    199: R6 P21 G Luke Goedeke – Central Michigan
    222: R7 P3 K Cade York – LSU

Unfortunately I didn’t do much at WR as they were swept up before my pick each round in a mini run

    FA can fix that!

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    Rumors are always flying around

Wilson tweets it’s raining again, therefore he hates Seattle and wants a trade

Rodgers is always bitching about something, and won’t speak, so he obviously wants out of GB

Someone looked at Kyler, so he must want out…

  66. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Steve
no I mean last season we used Gesicki 75% WR and 25% TE (mostly in the double TE sets) but we still forced Waddle into those shallow slants etc. that are so dangerous to a thin guy like Waddle and don’t take advantage of his long speed.
So just keep doing that and don’t worry about Gesicki blocking inline very often.
Then draft … not a slot guy …
draft a true deep threat to take the top off. He’d only need to catch 3 balls a game on 5 targets, but he’d be going deep every play just about to draw their fastest CB away from Waddle.
Waddle can still contribute his chain moving plays in close.
Bowden could become Deebo 2.0 (although not that volume) and then boom! we have a better O than Frisco that can score more TDs. Tua is more accurate than Garo Polo, so that’s a bonus.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

And Waddle could double his yardage per catch while reducing the number of hits he takes because he’d be mostly intermediate and deep where the LBs can’t hit him.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Mentioned above I want Waddle outside, but when we need a 1st down you may see him in the slot

Gesicki needs more reps, Bowden will command a lot as will Smythe, Long and Shaheen, when would this new slot WR play?

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Garo Polo huh😝

  67. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

WR Calvin Austin – Memphis is a 4 year player with two consecutive 1000+ yard seasons and 8 TD’s this season (+1 rushing) and 11 last season. He averaged 15.5 yards per catch but is a tiny 5’8″ 160 LB’s.

  68. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Yeah I tried to fill a need, when I was picking in bad position each round. My Man crush Tolbert went in the first this draft.

  69. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    Steve
    like I said both times,
we don’t need and I don’t want a new slot WR.
I want to draft the fastest deep threat guy we can get.
Like in the 4th round even.
Then use our high round picks on ILB RB RT (or C), because we need extreme quality there.

  70. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I like Christian Watson to draft in the 4th, but he is rising so we might have to trade up to the late 3rd.

  71. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Rock, I like Calvin Austin. He has the speed to make defenses pay but is likely a slot WR.

I also like ILB Micah McFadden, he is a downhill attacker and good blitzer. His only knock is that he is possibly a 2 down guy in the NFL as he struggles in man coverage but decent in zone coverage. He would be a good young backup and special teams guy.

  72. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We really need to resign Hollins, IMO. He was our best blocking WR and even lined up as an H-Back a few times last year. He is built like a lighter TE at 6’4 221.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yes please resign Hollins. He has an IT factor beyond his talent, which is surprisingly solid.
He has literally won several games for us with must have catches at critical times.

  73. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I see a lot of talk here about Bowden being our Debo Samuel type and I get it but he is still very raw and very much a project. I wouldn’t pencil him in just yet

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Deebo only just completed his 3rd season of which in 2020 only played 7 games. He was not a seasoned NFL vet coming into the 2021 season. Going into last season, Deebo only ran the ball 22 times in his first 22 games. Bowden had 9 carries in his first 10 games with us before being put on IR last year. Even our joke of an offense saw the potential there. I don’t see where he is VERY raw and VERY much a project.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

BTW, I had mentioned him being our Deebe type. Didn’t mean it to be “he is” or “will be”. I just meant that he has that potential.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The potential is there and I see why it was said but I always take the more cautious approach about they have to show me as OD would say

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

To be Debo means you have to run over DBs, not just be a WR and RB, that’s no one on our team

Only one that comes to mind, that we may pick up, is Cordarrelle

I’ve been seeing the same comments as you made. Since we only have two LB’s under contract this season I figured I would add some depth after getting my probowl guy in the first round.

  75. Randy's avatar Randy says:

How about we stop trying to figure out how to replicate Deebo and just let these new guys figure out how best to use the guys they got? I said before, you could tell that Deebo was wearing down physically as the playoffs went on. I seriously doubt he’ll be able to keep this up anyway. Plus, teams will figure it out, and it won’t be something teams will be able to keep doing with such success. Teams will figure it out.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yes I totally agree with that … to me, it’s not Deebo Samuel the person; it’s just deebo the code for plays and players that are hard to scheme against.
So I think the deebo package is an example of how creative McDaniel can be and how he can imagine plays that are so well suited to individual players’ strengths.
So for us a Bowden package could work, a Gesicki pkg, could work, and I see how there could be a Gaskin pkg that might work.
Waddle can do anything, so he doesn’t need a trick package. He’s a special talent.

  76. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

That is pretty cool. Tied for the most since 2013.

Creed Humphry was taken at the end of the 2nd round and came out killing it. I doubt very much adding talent can do more harm than good. I think going back to the zone blocking scheme will benefit the players we already have, but that some of the issues are with talent not just lack of coaching.

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        Humphrey is good

I’m pretty confident that a lot of the OL are very good in this draft

    Round 4: Selection No. 117

    Round 5: Selection No. 156
    Round 6: Selection No. 200
Round 7: Selection No. 221 (from Texans in Greg Mancz trade)

This is what we have according to Tankathon

    What about all those lawsuits?
Shouldn’t he settle all those as a first step?
Then what about the league reaction to the litigation settlements?
And what about the PR fallout, not just for him, making him less than desirable,
