Dolphins 2022 – Upgrade the roster

With the 2022 coaching staff intact, the next step is upgrading the personnel that plays on the gridiron. March 1-7 is the NFL Combine in Indiana. Unlike many years past, we’re not armed with an arsenal of picks, but it doesn’t matter. Just hit on a few picks and we’ll be a better team. In reality, the same teams are pretty much in the playoffs or at least in the hunt every season, despite picking near the end of each round and not having 10-12 draft picks. It’s the quality of the picks that count. Considering how much money we have available in 2022 cap space, we’ll already have addressed some key issues before we even enter the fray of the 2022 NFL Draft. The next most relevant date is March 8th, which is the deadline for teams to apply either the Franchise Tag or Transition Tag to players. I’ve actually never been less sure on how we proceed in this regard. You all know how much I love TE Mike Gesicki but I just don’t know what Mike McDaniel thinks about Gesicki and if he’s a viable fit in his system. His talent is undeniable as a receiver, but the biggest question is not necessarily whether he can block, it’s did the previous staffs even ask him to?

The next date is key for us, because March 14-16 is when teams can contact players/agents of NFL Unrestricted Free Agents (UFA’s). There will be fierce competition for O-line players as most every team has O-line issues. We’ll have to pay dearly to get who we want, but really, who cares? Just get them! Not my money, not my problem. This is why you get yourself in the position of having among the highest cap space, so you have the freedom to spend it. Let’s face it, we need at least 1 or 2 guys that will step in immediately and upgrade our offensive line. Draft picks, even the best of them have a break in period. We can’t afford that. This team has started slow each of the last 3 seasons and because of that, we were on the outside looking in during the playoffs. We need to come out of the gate quick, and 2 veteran anchors on the O-line would make that more likely. On March 16th, Free Agency begins and the cash will be flowing. Spend it well Miami! Also on March 1th, after 4PM, the trading opens up. Wouldn’t be surprised in the least to find us active there as well.

April 4th, The 2022 Miami Dolphins will get to work in practice as we will be among the teams with a new Head Coach, so we will begin offseason workouts. April 20th is the deadline for meetings between NFL teams and NFL Draft prospects. April 22nd is the date is the deadline for Restricted Free Agents (RFA’s) to sign their offer sheets. The 2022 NFL Draft is April 28-30. We can’t go into the draft desperate for help at any one position. If we handle our business properly in Free Agency, we just be adding talent to the roster, not relying on any one draft pick to be a star immediately at any given position. I’ve discussed the O-line so many times so I won’t repeat that, but WR and RB might be places where we upgrade. Despite the fact that DeVante Parker carries a reasonable salary, do we really want to count on him? I for one hope we don’t, and if we’re looking to replace him, former Chargers WR Mike Williams would be a nice target. He’s not as much of a 50/50 ball guy as Parker but he’s much more explosive, and reliable as far as staying healthy. We know we need weapons for Tua, and Williams would be a nice player. Chris Godwin is another big receiver, not quite as big as Williams who is 6’4 220, but at 6’1 he plays big. We need to sign a RB, as we are bereft at the moment on our roster. Myles Gaskin and Gerrid Doaks are the 2 rostered RB’s. Former Dolphins Duke Johnson and Phillip Linday are available, and some other interesting choices as well, like former 49er and Bills RB Matt Breida, who gushed about McD, and Rashaad Penny who had somewhat of a breakout season for Seattle and who just turned 26. We know we’re probably going to have a committee approach at RB so we’ll need solid depth. Hope we solve this puzzle well!!

When you have about $70M that doesn’t mean each guy makes that per year. We could sign 7-8 FAs and sign draft picks. The cap goes up in the next 2 years as well. That’s not a concern. The Phins should gear up to make the playoffs and make a run. Why not? Players change that.

  19. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

The NFL will be playing a total of five international games in 2022 and we already know the home teams in each of those games because the league revealed them on Monday. The five international games will be tied for the most that the NFL has ever played in a single season.

Here’s a look at the five teams that will be headed abroad:

Buccaneers headed to Munich. The NFL’s first regular-season game ever in Germany will feature the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This will be Tampa Bay’s fourth trip to Europe with the three prior games all being played in London.

Cardinals headed to Mexico City. Back in 2005, the Cardinals became the first NFL team to play a regular-season game outside the United States when they hosted a game in Mexico City, and now, they’ll be making their return 17 years later. The Cardinals have been the NFL’s unofficial international guinea pigs over the course of their existence. Not only did they play in the first regular-season game outside of the U.S., but they also played in the first preseason game outside North America in 1976 (Japan) and the first preseason game ever in Europe in 1983 (London).

Packers headed to London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium). The NFL has been sending teams to London for 14 years and over that time, 31 of the league’s 32 teams had made the trip abroad. The only team that still hasn’t played in London is the Packers, but that drought will finally be coming to an end.

Saints headed to London (Tottenham Hotspur Stadium). For the third time in franchise history, the Saints are headed to England. The Saints have a 2-0 all-time record in London with a win over the Chargers in 2008 and a victory over the Dolphins in 2017. If they moved all their games to London, they’d probably never lose again. I think that’s how that works.

Jaguars headed to London (Wembley Stadium). No surprise here. The Jaguars are the closest thing the NFL has to a team being based in London. The Jags have gone to London in every season since 2013 and that streak will continue this year.

We won’t know who each of these teams will be playing until the schedule comes out in the spring. One other notable aspect of the international games this year is that 2022 marks the beginning of a rotation that will see every NFL team play at least one international game every eight years

Not surprised to see this fixture added Krishna – there were 3 franchises based there in the NFL Europe days and a lot of fans fly over to London for the UK games. It was a logical progression.

The only team the Fins play on that list is GBP and that’s a home game for us, so no London game for me 😥

      Can’t argue that

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I really agree with this SB. Gesicki has proved he can add a lot to the offense, and now we have a coach who knows how to use TEs. Why would we strip off our best TE and rely on a rook who honestly barely contributed anything last year? I mean I hope Long develops, but we have already waited through Gesicki’s development, and we have the cap space, why start over?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Not Long replacing Gesicki straight up, it would be TE by committee. Long is on a 3rd round contract, Gesicki is about that 2nd contract.

Good morning, Krishna. I thought I did reply with an answer. I know I typed it but was at work and can’t remember now.

My deepest apology. I was correcting myself in you and Rob’s case. I had said that I never had a problem with Rob and I was guilty of being a provoker of David. Later on, maybe the next day I saw your response and it clicked in my head how hurtful that was. In no way should anyone attack another person’s family on this blog and banning, whether temporary or permanent is 100% the right thing to do. I know I typed a response but maybe I didn’t hit post after being interrupted at work and later just hit refresh when I came back to the blog. I do that a lot.

Not trying to make an excuse for not answering your question. I also intended to say it should not be up to the admins whether Rob can come back. It should be up to you after a sincere apology. It has not happened so it should remain in effect. The more I think about it, when there has been time to reflect in calmer waters and an apology still has not happened a permanent ban should not be out of question but then again, it should be your decision if and when it ever occurs.

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

To me, we are not in tear down mode at all. We need 4 TEs, and we have 4 that work together and give us everything we need at that position. They are young, improving, healthy, and they like each other it seems and work well together. That is a thing that can carry a team through rough patches or elevate a team further into the playoffs.
Divas always cause trouble. Except for X, maybe, we don’t have any, and that is great.
We need to be careful to keep the positive chemistry. That is something Flo should get credit for. He and Grier have assembled a bunch of guys who love each other and love football. This is hard to achieve and not to be taken lightly nor demolished just to get a few percentage points better skills.

  27. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I will not be upset if they re-sigh Gesicki. I just don’t see the great need expressed by some of you. If they sign him and only use him to his strengths so be it, I wont bitch. I just think his weaknesses compound the team’s weaknesses. They can’t run the ball, is it a coincidence, only, that our main TE is a POOR blocker? Or COULD it be that he is a major contributor to the poor performance?
IMO we need to roll with the guys that can catch, run routes and BLOCK. Both in pass support and run support. Hunter was a better blocker his rookie season that Gesicki has ever shown.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We don’t feel there’s a great need to re-sign Gesicki, but there is a great need to have a competent replacement. We saw what happened with the o-line when we let veterans walk and didn’t have viabl replacements. We saw what happened when we didn’t properly address the running back position. We saw what happened when we tried to lean on a wide receiver corps full of tiffany glass lamps. Hunter Long is another continuation of that. His blocking was terrible last year. I’m not sure what you saw.

There is no need to keep rehashing the bans. I appreciate the multiple viewpoints but the admins have taken up the issue. A vote was taken and the bans remain in place. I am not going to go into any further than this. The original bans were not made lightly nor was the decision reached this morning. None of the admins want to have been placed in this position and we hope not to be ever again. I think the reasons to keep Gesicki have been laid out very well through multiple posts:

    1. He is a legitimate receiving threat
    2. Homegrown – We lived through his developmental stage and he is coming into his prime
    3. He is Tua’s binky
    4. TE room chemistry – they work well together and all have a defined role
    5. TE room is a known strength – Take away/replace a piece you don’t know what you have
    6. Team must start showing loyalty and commitment to the players they grew and who perform – It’s not baseball or basketball, you can’t buy a team and moneyball doesn’t work
    7. Blocking can be taught – He is certainly not afraid of being physical catching the ball, so why would he be afraid of being physical when blocking

I think Miami’s previous coaches didn’t really envision him as a blocker so they did not use him that way and did not teach him to block. Let’s face it – they could not teach the OL how to block; how are they going to teach a TE how to block.

and the tag for a TE is only about $11M I think, which is not a bad number for a star TE.
Plus he only had 2 drops all of last season, and they threw to him a bunch.
      also
5th in receptions and 8th in yards
and we all know the OL often prevented our receivers getting any depth.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Nice…part of helping him reach his potential/ceiling.

  35. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We’ve over paid plenty in the past on other team’s FAs, we have the cap space, so we need to do what we have to, to keep Gesicki and Ogbah

Not much you can do, if someone wants to pay Gesicki 20m, but within reason.

Franchise tag for a WR is just over 19m

  36. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The actual fracking part is done at the drilling stage. FERC permits the export facilities.

Tucker often says things sarcastically, they likely spliced some of his stuff together

You seriously think a site called shit touch.com is legit?
    —————–
Steve have no idea about the source and clearly the comments were spliced together (how could they not be?), but I read a number of articles about the right’s response to the administration’s warnings that the invasion of Ukraine was coming. Each pointed out how Tucker was making pro-Russian comments. Not Fox in general….. Carlson in particular.

But like you said maybe they just don’t get his humor.

Dean concerns me because of this:
    Weaknesses

Built like a stocky back, lacking ideal size and length.

Tardy response allows climbing blocks a chance.
Can be swallowed up when lingering on second level.
Traffic seems to find him in lateral pursuit.
Average stopping power and length as open-field tackler.
    Inconsistent to body-up and finish.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

On offense think athletic and mobile OL, one cut RBs with speed, WRs who are good after the catch and willing blockers, and TEs who can block and assist in the passing game. That’s the feel I get.

On defense I feel like it will be the same type of players we’ve been adding the last few years.

The common trait Grier believes in are players who love football and are self motivated. He prefers that over combine numbers. He believes in the tape and the person more than that stuff.

  52. twicethethe's avatar twicethethe says:

  53. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    sleepers to watch
    Offensive Line
    Cole Strange, Chattanooga

Strange’s twitchiness pops on film. He’s a combo-blocking master. And that athleticism was one of the main reasons he excelled at the Senior Bowl against a variety of Power 5 defensive linemen. At just over 6-4 and 300-ish pounds, Strange has the body type to glide in the 40 and work out like a starting-caliber guard, which his film indicates he’ll ultimately be.

  54. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    sleepers
    Wide Receiver
    Wan’Dale Robinson, Kentucky

There is exactly zero buzz for Robinson right now. Why? Well, underclassmen like him — who aren’t at the Senior Bowl — always slip through the cracks…until the combine. Robinson was sandwiched between Jameson Williams and John Metchie atop the SEC receiving yard list in 2021, and he caught 104 passes.

Traits-wise, Robinson was built to play in today’s NFL. He’s smaller, but ultra-sudden with acceleration to turn jukes into touchdowns. Based on his film, Robinson feels like a prospect who’s going to erupt in the agility drills in Indianapolis then land on the second day of the draft and be a stud quickly in the NFL.

  55. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

This guy says the Dolphins should sign:
    OG James Daniels

He’s not necessarily an elite interior man, but Daniels would offer new coach Mike McDaniel a ready-made starter — very important for a team that figures to build from the trenches out.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      and Saints should sign:
      TE Mike Gesicki

They could use QB, LT and WR help more, but this is about long-term value. At 26, Gesicki is a still-rising playmaker who could help offset the middling production of Adam Trautman. They’re rebuilding, so he’s much better than a stopgap.

  56. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We need a bull ILB who can jam the interior rush lanes to free up Baker to roam. Baker’s too light to withstand getting hit by IOL every play.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We did have that in Roberts but he’s limited in coverage. We definitely need LBs though as we really only have Baker right now. Teams play a lot of nickel and dime these days so a bull ILB is not easy to find kind of like FBs these days.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

      BINGO!!!!

I was going to copy and paste your post about Dean and say that is why I want Leo Chenal. IMO, he has the potential to be Luke Kuechly good. I know I am stretching there but watch his tape. He is a monster who can’t be blocked by TE’s and especially RB’s.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’d say finding an ILB who is a really good tackler and willing to play physical but can also be a 3 down LB is what we should be looking for. You got to do more than just be a thumper in the run game these days. Unless you find a guy on the cheap who can play that role at times and also play STs. Roberts was that guy. Maybe we re-sign him. Our run defense was not a big issue last year, we ranked right in the middle.

What will really help our defense be more productive is a better offense.

    Here’s an interesting exerpt:
Mike Gesicki doesn’t have the reputation of being a stellar blocker and that’s important in your offense. What do you see in his skill set and how it can fit in the offense you seek to bring?

Whether you call it an optimist or the way I’ve always looked at players, I identify what they can do and less of what they can’t. There are some things about Mike’s game that are very beneficial for an offense. There is a lot of stuff in the pass game that he’s exceptional at. So, I get why people talk that way. I do think he’s a competitive player who is a team player. There are multiple ways we’ve used guys just like him. Everyone is involved in the run game. He is capable of blocking. You just have to tailor everything that you do to your guys’ given skill set to put them in good positions to succeed.

“McDaniel is scheduled to conduct a press conference at the scouting combine Wednesday afternoon, and it’s got a chance to feature a highlight moment.

This is the aftermath of his appearance on the Rich Eisen Show, where the host challenged McDaniel to use the following three clichés during an upcoming press conference: “I don’t have a crystal ball,” “It is what it is,” and “I can only control what I can control.” Eisen told him he could substitute the last one with, “I’m only talking about the guys that are here.”

McDaniel then told Eisen he was tripling down and that he would insert all three clichés into one answer, but with this stipulation: that Eisen run to the podium to give him a high-five if he delivered.

INDIANAPOLIS — Mike McDaniel welcomed two visitors to a Dolphins suite at the NFL Scouting Combine upon their arrival on Tuesday afternoon.

“Let me give you guys the grand tour,” McDaniel said with a smile. “As you can see here we have the actual longest bathroom hallway in Indy. And over here we have some snacks. Plenty of snacks.”

McDaniel was engaging and thoughtful and hospitable in time spent with two Palm Beach Post reporters. McDaniel spoke convincingly about the offensive identity he plans to establish.

McDaniel spoke with enthusiasm and passion about his high hopes for receiver Jaylen Waddle. And he spoke about how well new members of the Dolphins’ organization are already meshing with the holdovers.

“Cultures are created by people,” McDaniel said. “I’m looking for people that have that competitive drive, that expectation to win. We want to empower those with that deep-seeded desire to win.”

    McDaniel wants mindsets to evolve.

“What is it going to feel like when you’re on the Miami Dolphins in 2022 and they have their first playoff win in 22 years?” McDaniel said. “You can’t be afraid of that. Chase that. Chase that feeling.”

It’s clear that McDaniel values relationships. He was charming. He was transparent. He spoke about how professional sports would not be the same without people discussing it and reporting about it in the media.

Time to ask Mike McDaniel some important questions
And because we’re all getting to know the 38-year-old McDaniel at the same time, we asked if he would be game for a few not-so-obvious, get-to-know-you questions.

Yes, of course McDaniel was game for the Q&A, so here it is:

Q: I’ve heard you say you’re an early guy. How early is ideal to show up to the office?

McDaniel: I like beating traffic and I like getting a couple hours in before people get to the office. So I’m generally happy if I’m in there in the 3’s (3 a.m.) somewhere.

Q: I like my eight and half hours.

    McDaniel: I need about five.

Q: One coach famously wanted his office stocked with Little Debbie Snack Cakes. What snack would you like access to in Miami Gardens?

McDaniel: Right now we’re focused on liquids. So right now, it’s Red Bull and Cherry Pepsi. The occasional water. The organization is trying to figure out what snacks I like. That’s why they’ve gone with the variety packs here. I do crush French fries with barbeque sauce around 2 p.m. many days. In the last three years, I’ve gone with the sweet potato variety.

    Q: Vacation spot?

McDaniel: My favorite place is Cayman Islands. The white sand. I’m excited to get back there. I didn’t fly on a plane until I was 13 and I grew up in a land-locked Colorado. So the water of the Caribbean blows my mind.

Q: Robert Hunt didn’t drive a car until two years ago.

McDaniel: This is why he’s not allowed to park near me.

    Q: Three dinner guests?

McDaniel: Michael Jordan. He’s my age and what he did. Benjamin Franklin. And Frank Sinatra. That would be sick.

Q: You’re having a party in your backyard and any band or artist will come play.

McDaniel: It’s tough because I’m a Hip Hop guy but it’s not like I’m in love with live Hip Hop. I would want Jay-Z to come hang out and do like a Freestyle on the side. But then I’d probably have Guns N’ Roses. Metallica would be good live. But I’m going to have neighbors. I’m assuming.

Q: In Colorado live music is huge, right?

McDaniel: Oh, yeah. It’s the bee’s knees.

    Q: Favorite movie?

McDaniel: One of my favorite movies of all time is MacGruber. (It’s a parody of MacGyver). I really like the Between Two Ferns movie.

Q: You would be awesome on that show.

McDaniel: But have you seen the movie? I’m going to get you and (Dolphins general manager) Chris Grier on this. It’s unbelievable. Because I’m a man of consistency I’ll add in Shawshank Redemption.

McDaniel reflects on lessons learned from teenager days:
Q: I saw a video where you were wearing hoop earrings as a teen. For the record I still have holes in one ear that never closed. You were what, 17? If you could go back and talk to that kid, what would you say to him?

McDaniel: Specifically about my earrings? Or? In general? I think that kid had a lot of lessons to learn. But I wouldn’t give him a pep talk. I’d probably just say, ‘Hang in there.’ And he’d say, ‘What? I’m the man.’ But I’d be like ‘Just hang in there.’ Because you’re going to have some humbling life lessons. But I’m not sure they would have been as humbling if I would have had the wisdom thrown at me. I feel like the trials and tribulations, if you approach them right, are necessary evils. So I wouldn’t want to give him the keys to the test in a “Back To The Future” way. I would rather say ‘It’s going to be all right.’ ‘What? Everything’s all right.’ ‘Just trust me.’ That’s what I’d say.

Q: What are three traits you admire most in others?

McDaniel: Generosity. Integrity. And honesty. With the fourth being humor. You asked for three but humor is important. It’s the fourth but it’s important.

Q: Whenever your Dolphins tenure is over, what do you hope people say about it?

McDaniel: And I quote, ‘Wow, that was better than I could have expected.’

Naples, keep an eye out when the DB’s run. CB Tariq Woolen from UT-San Antonio could possibly run a 4.2 flat. What is freakish about him is he is 6’4 205 pounds and could run that low. I have tried to get him in my mock drafts, but he goes to early.

Then again, Iggy was fast, and we see how he turned out.

I think some of you guys have swayed me a little. I still think we should draft an OL but maybe not in the first round. As you guys have argued we need veteran leadership in that meeting room. Here is PFF’s list of top 10 free agent OL. I wonder which are most familiar / suited to outside zone scheme?

    BEST OL IN FREE AGENCY
Terron Armstead (Rank among PFF’s top 200 free agents: 2)
    Orlando Brown Jr. (9)
    Ryan Jensen (12)
    Brandon Scherff (18)
    Laken Tomlinson (26)
    Duane Brown (32)
    Connor Williams (38)
    James Daniels (40)
    Ben Jones (46)
    Austin Corbett (53)

Obviously Tomlinson has been discussed on here a bunch already.

He’s a OG, so if we get him, we should move Jackson back to LT, since that is where he was a first round star in major college. (duh)
Then move Eich to RT, where he says he is more comfortable. (duh) (cut Davis to save money against the cap and my high blood pressure pills)
If we can get Linderbaum at Center, then fine do that, but I’d rather go with Dieter one more year. He was a star at a known OL factory. (Wisc)
We need to use that 29th pick on the best deep threat WR we can get or an all pro type RB or a probowl ILB.
That is where we have holes.

waaaay back in the day, i had a girlfriend whose grandfather had a blueberry “plantation” (before PC times) on John’s Island. I was born on James Island, so his farm was just a couple creek bridges away. Those berries tasted so awesome growing out of that rich black swamp muck mixed with beach sand on those islands.
She and I used to go wander up and down the rows to harvest enough for me to eat big handfuls and still have some left over for her to make me a blueberry pie.
When I was a little kid, the little old lady down the street (probably younger then than I am now) had persimmon trees that she shared with us kids. Amazing fresh but the only ones I’ve ever eaten.

    Looking at the Super Bowl,
    and conference champs,
    and playoff teams …
each of those teams has a core of true stars who can do a thing to win a game.
We have Wilkins and X and Jevon and Waddle.
We needs at least 3 more stars.
We need some pro bowl level players.
This roster we have can only get us to 9-8.
