Next Step is here – NFL Free Agency

The Dolphins have already secured TE Mike Gesicki for the 2022 NFL season as they have placed the Franchise Tag on him. They can work out a long term deal or have his services for this season and reevaluate after. With a new HC, it’s difficult to say which is more likely. Other Dolphins players I would like us to re-sign are Emmanuel Ogbah, Nik Needham and Mack Hollins, and in that order. From outside our organization, I feel the interior of the O-line is a must fix so I would prefer to get Niners LG Laken Tomlinson. As some of you know, the Cowboys are willing to trade OL La’el Collins. Collins can play inside or outside, and can play either side at tackle, and play them all well. That’s a nice commodity to have, especially with what I believe is some young talent we have that we need to find spots for such as Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Some have already given up on these players, I think that’s foolish. Collins has been a fixture on the Cowboys line since ’15, although he did miss most of the ’16 season tearing a ligament in his big toe Game 3. He was placed on IR and missed the rest of that season. Otherwise he has been a steady presence for the Cowboys. I don’t know what compensation the Cowboys expect for Collins but I’d give up a 2nd or 3rd RD pick without any hesitation to get Collins. With so high a demand for quality O-linemen, the Cowboys just might cash in much higher for Collins. I suppose I’d consider our 1st RD pick (#29) as well. Other possible picks at #29 are C Tyler Linderbaum, WR Jameson Williams and probably a host of others that I haven’t even considered but GM Chris Grier has his eye on. Collins would start and be an upgrade just about anywhere we put him, and lord knows we need to upgrade the O-line. There are quite a few avenues to consider though, being we have a good amount of cap room and we can find 2 good free agent OL in Free Agency.

Back to re-signing our own, the Dolphins have to make Emmanuel Ogbah a priority. It’s not that Ogbah is a guy who takes over games, he’s not that type of player. He is a guy that consistently gets pressure from his side of the field and despite not having gaudy numbers in any one defensive metric, he’s had over 20 QB hits each of the 2 seasons he’s played here, and although he missed double digit sacks by one each year, with the emergence of Jaelan Phillips, I think Ogbah and Phillips could be both be perennial double digit sack guys. Ogbah’s 2 best seasons were here in Miami, so I’d hope he’d want to return to the place where he’s been most successful, although in all fairness, money will talk. We’ll have to show Ogbah some love ($$$) if we want him back. DB Nik Needham is a player I just love to watch. I remember when we drafted some guy (Noah Igbinoghene) and had such high expectations for that player. Instead, it was Nik Needham thrust into duty and call him an overachiever or whatever you want but he always proved he belonged on the field. It’s hard not to like and admire Needham and I truly hope we retain him as a player. Mack Hollins is another one of those players like Needham. We know he’s a special teams ace and that guy was always around the football on ST’s. He was also thrust into duty when others were expected to be ahead of him, but due to injuries, Hollins got more playing time than expected. He showed up and played well all the time. So often I’d see Hollins make a play and both I and the announcer thought it was TE Mike Gesicki, #86 and #88 look similar and their lithe body types are close as well. #86 has to be re-signed so the confusion can continue.

When you look at improving the team, most of us feel the O-line is the place where it needs to begin. I also feel like the majority here feel we should be adding veterans and not spending high picks on the O-line, as we all know we’ve spent quite a few in the last 2 years as it is, one 1st RD pick in 2020 (Jackson), two 2nd RD picks, 2020 (Hunt), and 2021 (Eichenberg). In 2019, we spent a 3rd RD pick on C Michael Deiter and we spent a 4th RD pick in 2020 on OG Solomon Kindley. I could see spending another 1st RD potentially on center Tyler Linderbaum. If they feel he’d be an immediate upgrade and a long term solution at center, it’s hard to argue pulling the trigger on that. We can also pick up probably the best center available in free agency Ryan Jensen formerly of Tom Brady’s Bucs. Lots of different ways to approach it, and Chris Grier is well aware of that. Tough part is there will be high interest across the board on quality offensive linemen so if we want a player, we’ll have to be very aggressive and pay whatever is necessary in order to get them. Bargain hunting is not an option.

I’m sure Grier has a clear plan as to what he’s doing, and then fallback plans when those are foiled. Even though we have deep pockets, the competition will be so high there’s likely to be a quick frenzy to start the free agency period off. Other than money, is Miami a destination where players feel like they can win? We have a bright new Head Coach in Mike McDaniel, but he’s a first time Head Coach, so is winning immediately realistic? Of course we have nice climate, especially during the colder months of the season and we also have no state income tax which makes the money go even further. I look forward to seeing what Grier and the Dolphins do when the communications between NFL teams and players (agents) begin on Monday March 14th. I have a feeling the bottom line of the NFL channel feed will be ringing like a pinball machine. Hopefully we’re doing some of the ringing!

There is no way in my mind that Amari Cooper is worth $20M to us with the way I envision our offense to be run.
We could get the same production out of a solid draft pick at 29 or 50 at a small fraction of that money.
Plus the kid would be much more excited and enthusiastic. Cooper looks bored and uninspired.
And we would have that contract for 4 or 5 years, at which time we draft a new guy, always keeping fresh legs.

  2. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

These 4 are setting there when we pick at #29
    Who are you taking?

    Tyler Linderbaum OC Iowa
    Nakobe Dean LB Georgia
Kenneth Walker III RB Michigan State
    Treylon Burks WR Arkansas
    ——————————-
If this is what I am looking at, I think I take Walker or Dean.
If Burks is the only one left of these 4, I am trading down.

Naples it was just someone reporting the Dolphins were involved in the trade talks with Dallas on Collins

thanks and well we should be.
I’d much rather pay $10-12 M for him than $20M for Amari.
But who or what pick would we trade though?
If we traded them Byron Jones?
      What does Dallas need?

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

If all 4 of these guys are left at 29 …
    wow
This would be a great problem to have.
    Tyler Linderbaum OC Iowa
    Nakobe Dean LB Georgia
Kenneth Walker III RB Michigan State
    Treylon Burks WR Arkansas

That’s almost like having pick #1 this year. There is no clear #1 like some years.
McDaniels and Grier would know what to do that is best for us.
If they think Linderbaum will not get overwhelmed by NTs, then he’s the guy.
We can get other RBs & WRs even into the 4th round and an ILB at 50.

I think they are looking at 6 by factoring in league expansion. Aren’t they talking about adding another 2 teams. With the way numerous teams are always looking for a QB every year, I can see this happening especially if they add more teams.

If we don’t resign Ogbah, we may need to target someone like (if he is there at #29):

    Travon Walker
    Georgia · DL
The 6-foot-5, 272-pounder was already considered a fringe top-10 prospect due to his versatility and explosiveness, but after Walker’s spectacular performance in Indy, the NFL scouting community is buzzing about his potential to emerge as a star at the next level. Walker blew up the combine with explosive numbers in the 40-yard dash (4.51), vertical leap (35.5 inches), broad jump (10-foot-3), three-cone drill (6.89) and short shuttle (4.32), while also displaying dynamic movement skills, balance and body control in positional drills. Although his production at Georgia didn’t exactly blow you away, that’s at least partially due to the fact that the Bulldogs’ defense was overflowing with NFL talent competing for playing time and stats. Scouts and coaches are captivated with Walker’s potential to play a variety of roles as a hybrid front-line defender with the capacity to align anywhere from nose tackle to edge rusher in a 3-4 or 4-3 front. With Georgia’s pro day set for next Wednesday, scouts could leave Athens viewing Walker as a top-five pick with game-changing abilities.

All you need to know Naples. Also works for The Bro aka the Manssiere..just ask Kramer.
      —————————
      FOLLOW THESE BRA FIT STEPS

1 — Measure your band. Wear a lightly lined (non-push-up) bra so your breasts are as close to natural as possible. Wrap a measuring tape directly under your breasts. Make sure it’s directly parallel with the bottom of the bra band.

2 — Now measure your bust. Place the tape at the fullest part of your bust. Make sure it’s parallel to your band again.

3 — Subtract the band size from your bust size to find the right cup size. Every inch equals one cup size up. Check our chart below.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I just measure by cupping my hands. lol

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

so let me get this straight.
I’m supposed to go up to let’s say a dozen or so random braless women wearing appropriately thin blouses that will not interfere with the measuring, and after fitting them snugly within my hands (use both hands?), I ask them what bra size they are and make note of that as compared to how full my hands felt? After 15 or so women, I will have thus learned what cup size my hands are so that, like BBM, I can just measure like he does in the future?

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

lol…What found funny is that after saying one inch more in bust versus band width equals one cup size they still gave a chart on that. The American educational system.

Four police and sheriff’s departments in the Twin Cities region are using StarChase, a unique tracking device that propels a dart-like cartridge from the front of a squad car onto the rear of a suspected stolen vehicle, allowing police to track the car remotely without physically following it.

“I think it will help us recover a lot more stolen cars in a safe manner,” said Ramsey County Deputy Joe Kill. The StarChase dart’s tip has an adhesive layer, helping it stick to the suspected stolen car. The dart also has a magnet to make sure it stays attached.

“As soon as you hit your lights and sirens, they’re fleeing from you,” Kill said. “Or we can back off, not chase it, follow it on a computer until it lands, and then come in and make an arrest or recover the vehicle.”

In Week 10 of the 2021 season, Ingold suffered a torn ACL and was ruled out for the season. So he’s rehabbing and may not be ready early on in the 2022 season. But he’s not going to be expensive, just a guy our new OC likes.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Omar is always trying to shit on fan favorites. He could be right, but he really likes to put a negative spin on this team. He already criticized us for franchising Gesicki. Maybe coach McD has a vision for Gesicki and we know it’s more as a receiver because that is what he is.

I’ve posted about the pros and cons of Gesicki but that was about how you use him. He’s not a very good blocker or a short route receiver. But he can be a mismatch running more vertical routes. He does not have quick twitch speed but once he gets going with his size and high pointing the ball ability he’s a mismatch. Teams have to account for him in that role and that can help open other plays. The franchise tag is also cheaper than what the top TEs are being played. Maybe coach McD wants to see how Gesicki fits for a year before totally committing.

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think you are right. Safeties will not be able to crowd the box with Gesicki running the seam. He might not have the catches/targets but the impact on a defense having to defend him will be one of those things that go unseen in the run game.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right, he can be a play-action target. If we’re a run based offense which I think we will be, even if he’s lined up as a WR, now he’s on a corner. I think he can block that from time to time. LOL

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Oh yeah, he’s a big dude. All he has to do is get in the way of most DB’s.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I read one beat writer the other day who said we should pursue OLB Jordan Hicks who was released by AZ. He has good numbers and played every game the last 3 years. I am just not feeling it. I think the glaring need is at ILB.

  34. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I keep saying in our OL search, don’t sleep on RT Larnel Coleman who is already on our roster and comes from an outside zone heavy team.

  35. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

So, with our top 51 players on the current roster for cap purposes (out of 53 total now), we have 48mil in cap space.

One thing I learned today, even though a player is not in the top 51, any players from 52 down who receive a signing bonus, there signing bonus is still counted against the top 51 cap.

So, if we sign say 7th round Joe Dickcheese for the rookie minimum but give him a 50K bonus, that 50K bonus will count against the top 51 cap.

My question is, does that count for PS players as well?

    Where’s capologist Steve?

  36. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t worry about the cap, we’re in good shape. There are always to make things work. We need to build on this team to start winning more. We’re not 2-3 years away like we always feel we are. Doesn’t that get annoying? Tua is in his 3rd season and we have some players on offense to work with, and a good core on defense. Becoming a top team should be the goal now.

If we can win 10 and 9 games the last two seasons, we should not think we can’t take another step and get into the playoffs. We’re a win or two away. Start there.

La’el Collins: SEP 10 2021Suspended 5 games for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, forfeiting $455,880 in 2021 salary with Dallas (DAL)

So when we do the math, based on his 10 starts last season and project it to 17 games… he was trending towards 3.4 sacks yielded and 13.6 penalties in 2021.

    Is La’el worth $10M/per in a trade?

Sometimes a player with the ball in his hands has room to run and falls awkwardly or fumbles. That’s football. If we’re looking for perfection, that search will be never ending.

Don’t know about “bust”, but I personally feel Dotson is being severely over-rated… and that’s coming from a PSU fan: me. I’d rate him as a 2nd rounder at best, probably more like a 3rd rounder.

I think many of us would agree. The only thing a good number of us wouldn’t agree on is his price tag. We will see if/when he is released. I don’t want to trade for him. I wouldn’t want to give up a draft pick and pay over 10mil for a WR who will be 30 during the season whose numbers have been declining over the last 2 years after his first 6 seasons. Seems to me, with the way Landry plays hard and gives you everything coupled with the toughness of the NFL and high number of targets/receptions that it is starting to take a toll on his body as he has not played a whole season the last 2 years for the first time in his career. He has always an above 4.5 40 guy and he may be losing a step.

It would be nice to see him come here on a 2-3 year discount deal and finish his career as a Dolphin but I don’t see Landry giving a discount.

Steve, don’t want to get political today but what would you think about a Pence/Tim Scott ticket. Basically, Trump policies without all the bullshit. I think Pence would work better with both sides of the isle.

Was just thinking about it the other day after hearing Trump, Jr on a news segment that made me have to turn the channel. I was getting sick to my stomach thinking about having another Biden/Trump showdown and all the bullshit, rehashing this and that. I really don’t want to hear it anymore.

I say this as a strong independent ticket will probably only split voters and help Biden.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Since Steve isn’t on yet, I’ll take a stab at it. Pence has no chance. Trump owns the party at this moment and unless something changes in his health in the next couple years, he’s the candidate. Let’s say Trump didn’t run though just to converse. Pence reminds me of Romney without being a RINO. A feel-good candidate for some who doesn’t move the meter at all. His only chance at winning is that Biden is the worst president in over a century. I’m not sure he’d win the GOP nomination though. He’s like warm milk on a sunny day. You’d drink it if there was nothing else available, but you’d try to find better options.

Without Trump, I think DeSantis is the best GOP politician to come along in decades. He doesn’t cower to the media and has done a great job in FL. He has a solid organizational group in FL and could gain massive support without Trump taking up all the air. He’s my favorite of all the Republicans in the country right now. Youngkin has done good work early but he’s so new. I’m not much of a fan of the rest of the party. Most of them are there for the paycheck and opportunities.

Of these I can’t see us wanting Fuller back or Brissett. I think McCourty is toast. Brown did not help us much at RB. I thought Mancz was already out the door.
I definitely want Smythe back. And Mack Hollins has earned a job as well.
It’s interesting to see what McDaniel thinks of Lindsay in his system.
Robert hits hard but gets caught out of position a lot it seems to me.
That leaves Palardy. He had the 3rd most punts land inside the 20, but he short legged a few, too.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

I’m fine with any of those leaving but wouldn’t mind keeping Hollins and Smythe at the right price. I’m more interested in who we get for the OL and if we keep Ogbah. I think Ogbah would be pretty hard to replace this year. We make a lot of needs which says something about either our drafting or previous coaching. This will be a tough FA period since McD only has video of our OL’s atrocious play. How many OL will we get? How many can we afford?

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I’m always interested in who they bring in to sell their vision to the other players. Mostert is definitely someone I could see them bringing in to do this but Lindsay could also do the same. • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Whole point of the American political system is that all power does not flow to one person or one branch. The founders set up with the President, Congress and the Judiciary being able to have checks and balance on the other branches actions. And that goes for now having ones within the executive branch as well.

Whole point was not too have a king or later some “elected” body that was chopping off heads like in the French Revolution. Worked for this country for like 250 years.

Trump could have fired the AG and then each and everyone of those other 17 guys in the AG’s office to get the guy he wanted in there. But that was a political step too far for him. He wants to change that dynamic.

      A. The higher gas prices are inevitable with Russia/Ukraine conflict
      B. Biden should increase US oil production

Extremely high character guy. Not going to label him as “Our Deebo” but he’s a guy that could definitely fit in with the type of WR that McD and Welker could be looking for. He is the one person that has “Persona non grata” written in bold letters on his forehead by way too many Americans. That’s one reason mail-in ballots are considered massively at risk for fraud. Because they enable much more. My picks would be;

DeSantis> most GOP>Trump>Romney(same as a Dem)>any Dem>Satan. Last two are really close in my opinion. One works for the other is the big difference.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

All for election security, but Trump insists there was enough that he actually won in 2020 by a landslide. And Biden won by the exact same electoral margin that Trump did in 2016 (which Trump also called a landslide). Hasn’t that ship sailed?

We can’t elect people based off some people thinking ‘this guy is just like Trump’. You never win by letting the other side determine your narrative. DeSantis brings results that Dems hate. That alone says he’s doing good things. FL is thriving under him which is another huge plus.

Trump still has massive support unfortunately and I’ll vote for him over any Dem. You seriously don’t want more of Biden’s Dem platform, do you? He didn’t make that platform and a more lucid Biden might not support a lot of it. He’s a puppet and their next version will follow the plan. With Trump, it’s all about the lesser evil. 4 years of Biden might break this country. He’s already outdone Carter’s 4 years in 1.

That pick site has Wooden still available for picking, but he declared to be returning to school for 2022.
Sheesh, they need to clean their site.

I don’t know #73, but drafting a DT that high would allow us to move on from Butler and save some $$$.
    ———————-
Naples, DT Travis Jones has been on my radar for months. He will go before 3rd round IMO so I started looking at DT’s who might be there in the 4th or 5th so I recently have been going with Ridgeway.

Jones can play multiple roles on the inside of the DL. Combine measurements were 6’4 3/4, 325 pounds but plays at about 330 and has an 83″ wing span. He has “good lateral athleticism and speed” (4.92 40) and “incredible lower body strength and power”. Being from a small school, he had to constantly be doubled teamed and even triple teamed. He is a beast and would be great in our rotation.

So tomorrow at noon we’ll start hearing some rumors in FA. I wonder if we’re all in on someone right out of the gate.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Don’t know. Only thing I will hear is the mower while I am cutting the grass.

Seriously though, I hope it is who we have been talking about in Tomlinson, Jensen and possibly Wagner. Would like to see some signings of our own players before noon.

Form past years, seems most of the wink wink stuff and reports will be about the big names for sure. Should tell us what we have in mind as far as big money.

I was disappointed to find out that in USFL’s first season are being played in Birmingham. I was hoping to catch a game or 2 in New Jersey
    ————————-
I may try to catch a game once I see the rosters. It’s only a 3.5 hour drive for me give or take depending on if I am in the Ford Fusion, my truck or the wife’s Camaro.

I think we should draft several genuine DEs because if we don’t keep Ogbah, we have none.
Phillips is listed as a LB.
If we draft 3 DEs in the 3rd and 4th rounds, surely one of them will step up and make plays for us.
We can’t ask Wilkins to do everything. And Van Ginkel is just too light to set the edge like a true DE.
Phillips can, but he’s only one guy.
We need a 270 pound beast out there, or teams will just take the corner whenever they want.

I actually support some of the positions that Trump had, but I can’t support someone who wants to be King or Dictator and refuses to man up and admit he lost. Enflaming thugs to overthrow our democracy killed it for me with Trump.
I do not support the radical Left either. I’m not even a Bernie guy. I believe in capitalism and do not support a welfare state.
Why can’t we just get someone with common sense and fairness? I’m so tired of people who won’t do the right thing just because of partisan politics.

I like this cat from Minnesota Bo Yay Mah Fay.
I say let Ogbah walk if he wants more than $15.9M.
Get this young guy Boye Mafe with a high motor and fresh legs and teach him how to be a pass rusher.
He has a high ceiling and his best football is in front of him. Cheap for the next 4 years.

  85. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Imo…we have at least two holes on the OL and not nearly smart enough to know the next 3. I think Hunt’s the best we have.

There’s a hole at ILB, resign Ogbah or we have another hole.

    Add (upgrade) the DL.

    Lots of holes….lol.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

We have 4 holes on the OL. Everyone but Hunt

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

A hole means we don’t have someone to play the position, we don’t have holes on our OL we just need upgrades

Adding a C and RT would solidify the OL and turn them into at least an average OL

Tua doesn’t need the best OL, he just needs one that will allow him to stay in the pocket once in a while

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

So you’re saying anybody who plays OL means we don’t have a hole….sorry, I don’t understand. Davis playing on the OL is fucking hole…lol

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No Davis is a hole, no pun intended, with a C and an RT our OL will be adequate

Part of the problems is too many raw guys playing next to raw guys, bringing in a couple of vets would allow guys needing help, from play to play to get it

When you have no coaching, and not enough experience you get what we had last year

New Age – I think you misunderstood me. I’m not saying DeSantis shouldn’t win the GOP nomination because the other side won’t like him, was just mentioning the other side will view him as more of the same, too Trump-like. That doesn’t mean he’s not good.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

No, it was my bad. I just hear that all the time about him, but I like firebrands. Trump is all about himself, but DeSantis sounds more about us. I want people pushing Trump’s positions hard but without all the me, me, me.

  87. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I hope we’re all in on Ogbah, hate to see him go somewhere else. If we’re not, odds are we really like someone else, and have full intentions of going to get whomever that is. Not sure why we didn’t try hard to sign Ogbah before free agency, but it takes both sides willing to do that.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It could be because his asking price is too high. I hope I’m wrong but have this feeling he’s going to sign somewhere else.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s possible, and the way free agency goes, he’ll probably get it too. I just hope whoever we get is as good or better.

What do you think of them getting rid of the DH in the national league?

I’m sad to see it finally go. MLB was unique in sports in that there were differences in gameplay between the leagues that teams had to account for in interleague and WS play. Made for more interesting matchups IMO.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

whoops, I meant adding the DH in the NL (obviously).

Stanger – Funny you mentioned Larry Hogan. A friend of mine lives in Maryland is a conservative and he loves Larry Hogan.

  90. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Kong, the National league was the last one standing as far as pitchers hitting. With the money pitchers make and the trouble many of them have staying healthy you could see it coming. Some pitchers are really good hitters and for us Mets fans deGrom is one of them, but most are not. The time had finally come.

  91. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – I’m a little torn. I’ve been steadfast of my belief the NL should always have their pitchers hit. On the other hand, the Mets roster is well suited now for the DH, so selfishly I’m OK with at the moment. I do know though that I will miss the strategy teams had to employ when a pitcher was pitching really well and was due up the next inning and the team was in a close game, I’ll miss the bunt attempts (which now are almost non-existent), and I’ll miss pitcher getting big hits, it was always exciting to see some pitchers swing away.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The game is played so differently these days all that strategy has been gone for awhile. Teams use so many pitchers that we now have relievers hitting by the 5th and 6th innings.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Exactly, it made for a lot more interesting strategy and in-game decisions. One of my favorite aspects of the World series was the homefield matchups for each league’s team and seeing how strategy would change. LOL, I completely get the OK with it at the moment because of your team’s benefit.

I could care less about the reasoning behind the change, most of us know the arguments both for and against, etc. They’ve been trying to change it for decades.

I’ll just be sad to see it go and for MLB to lose that element that made it unique. A little bit more homogenization of the game itself.
