Next Step is here – NFL Free Agency

The Dolphins have already secured TE Mike Gesicki for the 2022 NFL season as they have placed the Franchise Tag on him. They can work out a long term deal or have his services for this season and reevaluate after. With a new HC, it’s difficult to say which is more likely. Other Dolphins players I would like us to re-sign are Emmanuel Ogbah, Nik Needham and Mack Hollins, and in that order. From outside our organization, I feel the interior of the O-line is a must fix so I would prefer to get Niners LG Laken Tomlinson. As some of you know, the Cowboys are willing to trade OL La’el Collins. Collins can play inside or outside, and can play either side at tackle, and play them all well. That’s a nice commodity to have, especially with what I believe is some young talent we have that we need to find spots for such as Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Some have already given up on these players, I think that’s foolish. Collins has been a fixture on the Cowboys line since ’15, although he did miss most of the ’16 season tearing a ligament in his big toe Game 3. He was placed on IR and missed the rest of that season. Otherwise he has been a steady presence for the Cowboys. I don’t know what compensation the Cowboys expect for Collins but I’d give up a 2nd or 3rd RD pick without any hesitation to get Collins. With so high a demand for quality O-linemen, the Cowboys just might cash in much higher for Collins. I suppose I’d consider our 1st RD pick (#29) as well. Other possible picks at #29 are C Tyler Linderbaum, WR Jameson Williams and probably a host of others that I haven’t even considered but GM Chris Grier has his eye on. Collins would start and be an upgrade just about anywhere we put him, and lord knows we need to upgrade the O-line. There are quite a few avenues to consider though, being we have a good amount of cap room and we can find 2 good free agent OL in Free Agency.

Back to re-signing our own, the Dolphins have to make Emmanuel Ogbah a priority. It’s not that Ogbah is a guy who takes over games, he’s not that type of player. He is a guy that consistently gets pressure from his side of the field and despite not having gaudy numbers in any one defensive metric, he’s had over 20 QB hits each of the 2 seasons he’s played here, and although he missed double digit sacks by one each year, with the emergence of Jaelan Phillips, I think Ogbah and Phillips could be both be perennial double digit sack guys. Ogbah’s 2 best seasons were here in Miami, so I’d hope he’d want to return to the place where he’s been most successful, although in all fairness, money will talk. We’ll have to show Ogbah some love ($$$) if we want him back. DB Nik Needham is a player I just love to watch. I remember when we drafted some guy (Noah Igbinoghene) and had such high expectations for that player. Instead, it was Nik Needham thrust into duty and call him an overachiever or whatever you want but he always proved he belonged on the field. It’s hard not to like and admire Needham and I truly hope we retain him as a player. Mack Hollins is another one of those players like Needham. We know he’s a special teams ace and that guy was always around the football on ST’s. He was also thrust into duty when others were expected to be ahead of him, but due to injuries, Hollins got more playing time than expected. He showed up and played well all the time. So often I’d see Hollins make a play and both I and the announcer thought it was TE Mike Gesicki, #86 and #88 look similar and their lithe body types are close as well. #86 has to be re-signed so the confusion can continue.

When you look at improving the team, most of us feel the O-line is the place where it needs to begin. I also feel like the majority here feel we should be adding veterans and not spending high picks on the O-line, as we all know we’ve spent quite a few in the last 2 years as it is, one 1st RD pick in 2020 (Jackson), two 2nd RD picks, 2020 (Hunt), and 2021 (Eichenberg). In 2019, we spent a 3rd RD pick on C Michael Deiter and we spent a 4th RD pick in 2020 on OG Solomon Kindley. I could see spending another 1st RD potentially on center Tyler Linderbaum. If they feel he’d be an immediate upgrade and a long term solution at center, it’s hard to argue pulling the trigger on that. We can also pick up probably the best center available in free agency Ryan Jensen formerly of Tom Brady’s Bucs. Lots of different ways to approach it, and Chris Grier is well aware of that. Tough part is there will be high interest across the board on quality offensive linemen so if we want a player, we’ll have to be very aggressive and pay whatever is necessary in order to get them. Bargain hunting is not an option.

I’m sure Grier has a clear plan as to what he’s doing, and then fallback plans when those are foiled. Even though we have deep pockets, the competition will be so high there’s likely to be a quick frenzy to start the free agency period off. Other than money, is Miami a destination where players feel like they can win? We have a bright new Head Coach in Mike McDaniel, but he’s a first time Head Coach, so is winning immediately realistic? Of course we have nice climate, especially during the colder months of the season and we also have no state income tax which makes the money go even further. I look forward to seeing what Grier and the Dolphins do when the communications between NFL teams and players (agents) begin on Monday March 14th. I have a feeling the bottom line of the NFL channel feed will be ringing like a pinball machine. Hopefully we’re doing some of the ringing!

Convincing take on why we should sign JC Tretter. Down sides are he is 31 (but C’s tend to play longer) and the cost (like $10 mil per year). Big plus is a proven track record of excellence in a wide-zone blocking scheme.

  38. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Tim, we are not knocking Cedric Wilson (CW). I like his game. His route running, understanding defenses (former QB) and setting up his defender contributes to his success. We compared him to Landry in that regard.

The guy was talking about him being a blazing speed boundary guy like Fuller. We were just saying he’s not that.

He did run some vertical out of the slot. It was successful due to their run game and Cooper and Lamb on the outside.

If we can draft Jameson Williams, have him opposite Waddle and establish a run game, Gesicki, CW and Bowden will feast from the slot.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Agreed. The Landry comparison was not just about him, the other comparison was Albert Wilson and I said I don’t see that but maybe Landry. All I’m saying is Cedrick Wilson is more than just a typical slot guy. He can catch passes well beyond 10 passes.

  39. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Let us not forget that Waddle has elite speed. We just didn’t use him like that. I also think teams made sure he didn’t beat us deep because nobody else could. If you go back and watch some video of games, we didn’t run a lot of deep routes, you would see all 4 guys in the route at 10 yards or less. How do you throw deep unless you’re running deep routes?

Big passing plays are also not all about throwing bombs, sometimes it’s the route that is a 20+ yard pass on the move and a guy takes it the rest of the way.

However I do think we’ll look to add speed at WR in the draft.

  48. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I prefer a guy like Waddle who you can throw the ball to anywhere, and he has the elusiveness to make big plays. You don’t need a top end speed guy to threaten the deep part of the field. There are ways to do it. Plus, guys who are just fast are a whole lot easier to defend than a guy who runs great routes. You just shade him or bracket him. That is a good way to manipulate the defense and control safeties, but it’s certainly not the only way to do it. Finally, I really don’t think this offense is gonna be predicated on the deep ball. I don’t think we need that sort of WR. Nice to have but not a necessity.

Don’t we always say don’t win free agency with big spending? We’re adding multiple parts, not the biggest contracts. It’s not always about household names. To follow up on Mike E’s statement, I also found our FA signings to be underwhelming so far. A lot of faith in an OL that was the worst in the league last year. Keeping together a D that didn’t start to shine until we played backups and terrible QBs. I think McD will help our offense improve and maybe that will be enough. I think our D will be closer to the one we saw in the first 8 games and not the other version. If we get a better O, that probably won’t matter so here’s hoping.

This free agency period is becoming, blah.

  71. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The defense is remaining mostly the same and I feel they can compete with anyone. Sometimes you have to beat the top offensive teams in a shootout. We were not equipped to do that on offense. Until we see what our offense looks like on the field, I wouldn’t get too caught up in worrying about we didn’t sign any big names.

We added players we feel are scheme fits that can help us get the new offense moving in the right direction. We signed a FB Alec Ingold to a 2 year $7.5M deal coming off of an ACL. That right there tells you the scheme has changed. I also think many of you are down playing Chase Edmonds and Cedrick Wilson Jr., we didn’t sign them because we wanted to sign “meh” players. LOL

What about Tua, Waddle and Gesicki etc.? We still have a draft. At the end of the day it’s about performance. Tua is the guy that has to make it work. It’s a QB driven league. He knows he’s the most important part of it all.

  72. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Here’s the way I see the RB/FB situation in regards to injuries. JMO, it’s cool if others are less optimistic about it. I can see the multiple angles.

The Niners have had injury issues with their RBs every flipping year. They always get down to the bottom of that unit, it’s why they started running Deebo last year. And every year these guys perform. So, I’m happy to see guys with talent added to that unit, even with injury histories because the idea is they’ll all perform, even as they drop like flies, lol.

Now, that being said, obviously we still need the big guys up front, and as I mentioned last week, the Niners always invested in the oline, they always had a top 5 guy to anchor the line along with other quality guys. Now maybe our guys think we have some quality players that have been undercoached, but what we definitely don’t have is that top 5 guy.

Armstead could be that guy, if you’re ok with him playing 10 games a year. Could Collins be that top vet (even if not top 5)? I don’t know, but I feel we still need to add that big name on the line and there are only a couple out there. So I’m still hoping we get a guy and then I still hope we draft a guy by day 2.

Interesting here… should the Cowboys outright cut La’el Collins, they’d incur a $13,950,000 dead cap hit: that’s rather significant. However, if La’el gets traded, he’ll cost the trading team $10M each year over the next 3 years.

So the Patsies* are reportedly in the mix to trade for La’el. In the meantime, their RT of last year, Trenton Brown, has a market value of $10.5M/per year as a FA.

Both La’el and Brown will be 29 years old once the 2020 season begins. One other note, Drew Rosenhaus is Brown’s agent.

What’s going on, here? Seems to me that the Patsies* are merely trying to drive up the trade price of La’el should we trade for him. Or are they? Maybe they truly want to move on from Brown being he may be a walking heart attack at 380 pounds?

    Something’s not right, here, IMO.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think THIS is why a trade has not yet occurred.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Let me be more specific… MANY moving parts and the Cowboys are holding out for the highest bidder (trader). Belicheat* may be funking with us, or maybe not. LOTS of fog right now.

So why are the Cowboys so willing to part with La’el to begin with?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Another note: The Cowboys currently sit at $36,211,357 under the cap.

  75. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – winning free agency to me is filling g the holes and upgrading our O-line. You know I thought we needed 2 solid guys on the line. Maybe Connor Williams is one. We’re signing a bunch of position players but I feel like we all know those guys are tangential to having a competent O-line. If the FB is met in the backfield the RB probably isn’t getting positive gains. If Cedrick Wilson gets open but Tua is on the ground it doesn’t matter. We all felt fixing the O-line was crucial, and so far we haven’t done it. I won’t feel confident going O-line in the draft and expecting that guy to step in and be an upgrade. I think established solid players was the way to go. I’ve been consistent on this.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Agreed…not happy about addressing OL issues at this point…not at all. It all starts there and TK wants to Tua step up…..behind same shit as last year…ok

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

So Tua needs to succeed with fastest reads and getting rid of the ball so someone doesn’t break his ribs blindside….lol

      Get a fucking OL!

Lol…the people in Albany were a lot more chilled v the fake, keep up with the Guidos-type, plastic shit….sorry.

I really want to land Linderbaum this draft. He’s exactly what we need to tie the OL together of Collins does indeed sign with us. That would leave only two positions on the OL to shore up. I believe there are two players on this team that can be coached into solid starters .

Same, and I generally like it! We just need to add one more O-Line via FA (IMO), and wishing we’d be able to outbid all for Bobby Wagner.

I’m seriously happy we haven’t “jumped the shark”, so as to sign as many high-priced FAs as humanly possible: we’re being SMART in our approach.

I’m watching to see what the plan is as well. It’s also kind of about what I want too though.

Hello its been years but my life is better now. Still a grumpy old man though. I’ve kept up with you all by reading.
Getting back to football stuff, why are a lot of you worried about the OL? There’s plenty of vet players left to sign. Hell, Eric Fisher as a proven LT, yes I know his achilles problem but another year of recovery should help him. Duane Browne, even though he is getting up there in years. Avoid Armstead money. Seems we are set on Collins at RT. Again there are 2 proven starters available , the Bills RT who was released(forget his name), along with David Quessenbury.
The huge need is at OC. Tretter or Bozeman fit the bill there. Our 2 young OTs can sit and learn then.
I love the way we have signed our own and made some astute signings. Grier as much as I don’t like him is doing a really good job.

  85. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

    M13
Leave Wagner to another team, declining play and way too much money. There’s a couple of ILB thunoer in the draft and also 1 available as a FA. Need to research his name. Hits hard.

Glad your life is better now. Worried about the O-line because despite your life being better, our O-line isn’t. I didn’t want to fix it with an older vet who may or may not last a season, I want to get guys who can be here for a few years, not Eric Fisher if everything is perfect can make it through one season. I was hoping to bring in 2 guys young enough to have at least 3 quality seasons with us so we can finally have stability on our terribly inadequate O-line

  90. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

So my draftnick friends, now that we have Mostert are we dropping RB to a lower priority in the draft?

You have the top 3 and everyone else. Do we still spend a 1st or 2nd on a RB now?????????

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Mostert is a one year deal, Edmonds is a 2 year deal. We’re kind of stuck in limbo there, but I’d say probably not. We can draft a RB high next season.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t see it that way. Mostert had an injury history and Edmonds is not a bell cow. We still can and or should draft an RB

  91. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  92. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Ken – Which would you say is a higher priority as of right now, RB or WR or O-line. I think at #29 we’d be going either WR or C. I think if we got our C, the next pick would be WR.

  93. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Still need to sign Duke, that would complete our backfield

  94. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Finalize Collins deal, get Duke and Smythe re-signed and we have a shot at the division

  95. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – The Collins situation is strange to me. I can’t see us giving up any high picks for La’el.

  96. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Maybe instead of a blocking TE, Ingold will be used in the Smythe role and maybe even using both FBs at same time

Still would like to re-sign Smythe, but only so many spots

Having a plan, doesn’t mean the plan is good. We don’t know what this offense is going to look like, but we don’t know the defense is going to show up either. They didn’t for the first half of last year when we were counting on them to be the strength of this team. Can Boyer successfully coach this defense out of the shadow of Flores? That’s a huge question that needs answering, but assume everything is defense side of the ball is Kool and The Gang.
We look to have committing to better coaching on the offensive side of the ball. On paper things have looked good. There’s hope there and reasons to be optimistic.
Going into the offseason, the board was pretty much in tune on what the plan going forward should be in free agency. Retain key talent, grab some vets for the o-line, sure up LB corps, get a vet WR who can stay on the field and free up Waddle for bigger things.
So far, retaining key talent has only yielded us 3 players and 2 of them could still be traded (Needham and Gesicki). Hollins, Smythe, and Duke should have been priorities as well. We let Hollins go to the Raiders and brought back Williams. That’s a big loss to the locker room that doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. We don’t look like we care about bringing back Duke, even though his presence on the field energized this team and elevated the play of everyone on the field. Smythe, who is our best all around TE, is still floating in the breeze.
IMO we overpaid outside guys in Wilson Jr. and Edmonds, for guys we already had on the roster in Ford and Johnson that were cheaper options. I understand bringing in guys someone is familiar with, but it shows a blind spot and I want my HCs to have as minimal as possible.
Free agency isn’t done and the draft hasn’t happened yet, but so far the plan has been underwhelming. I just haven’t seen where we’ve made the moves necessary to get past fighting for a WC spot at the end of the year only to be sitting at home when playoff time comes. Two teams in our division made the playoffs last year and look to repeat. Other conference competition has gotten tougher. I mean its possible to hit runner runner for a straight flush to beat a flopped full house, but it’s highly unlikely.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No we don’t know what the offense is going to look like, but we do know it won’t be worse, unless injuries hit us hard

The O was fairly good without an OL, we can’t be worse with one

The WR will be blocking, that will also help us run the ball

We’ll have more options with receivers that are better suited to get 1st downs

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We can’t be worse is the measurement now? I should hope a bottom 10 offense in the league has been improved, but it needs to be improved drastically if we want to be able improve past wildcard limbo. The offense could be improved, the defense stays the same and we could still be at home when the playoffs come. We aren’t improving in a vacuum. Other teams are doing it too.

  99. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

FWIW, this guy says our team had the 9th greatest offseason improvement index
