Next Step is here – NFL Free Agency

The Dolphins have already secured TE Mike Gesicki for the 2022 NFL season as they have placed the Franchise Tag on him. They can work out a long term deal or have his services for this season and reevaluate after. With a new HC, it’s difficult to say which is more likely. Other Dolphins players I would like us to re-sign are Emmanuel Ogbah, Nik Needham and Mack Hollins, and in that order. From outside our organization, I feel the interior of the O-line is a must fix so I would prefer to get Niners LG Laken Tomlinson. As some of you know, the Cowboys are willing to trade OL La’el Collins. Collins can play inside or outside, and can play either side at tackle, and play them all well. That’s a nice commodity to have, especially with what I believe is some young talent we have that we need to find spots for such as Austin Jackson and Liam Eichenberg. Some have already given up on these players, I think that’s foolish. Collins has been a fixture on the Cowboys line since ’15, although he did miss most of the ’16 season tearing a ligament in his big toe Game 3. He was placed on IR and missed the rest of that season. Otherwise he has been a steady presence for the Cowboys. I don’t know what compensation the Cowboys expect for Collins but I’d give up a 2nd or 3rd RD pick without any hesitation to get Collins. With so high a demand for quality O-linemen, the Cowboys just might cash in much higher for Collins. I suppose I’d consider our 1st RD pick (#29) as well. Other possible picks at #29 are C Tyler Linderbaum, WR Jameson Williams and probably a host of others that I haven’t even considered but GM Chris Grier has his eye on. Collins would start and be an upgrade just about anywhere we put him, and lord knows we need to upgrade the O-line. There are quite a few avenues to consider though, being we have a good amount of cap room and we can find 2 good free agent OL in Free Agency.

Back to re-signing our own, the Dolphins have to make Emmanuel Ogbah a priority. It’s not that Ogbah is a guy who takes over games, he’s not that type of player. He is a guy that consistently gets pressure from his side of the field and despite not having gaudy numbers in any one defensive metric, he’s had over 20 QB hits each of the 2 seasons he’s played here, and although he missed double digit sacks by one each year, with the emergence of Jaelan Phillips, I think Ogbah and Phillips could be both be perennial double digit sack guys. Ogbah’s 2 best seasons were here in Miami, so I’d hope he’d want to return to the place where he’s been most successful, although in all fairness, money will talk. We’ll have to show Ogbah some love ($$$) if we want him back. DB Nik Needham is a player I just love to watch. I remember when we drafted some guy (Noah Igbinoghene) and had such high expectations for that player. Instead, it was Nik Needham thrust into duty and call him an overachiever or whatever you want but he always proved he belonged on the field. It’s hard not to like and admire Needham and I truly hope we retain him as a player. Mack Hollins is another one of those players like Needham. We know he’s a special teams ace and that guy was always around the football on ST’s. He was also thrust into duty when others were expected to be ahead of him, but due to injuries, Hollins got more playing time than expected. He showed up and played well all the time. So often I’d see Hollins make a play and both I and the announcer thought it was TE Mike Gesicki, #86 and #88 look similar and their lithe body types are close as well. #86 has to be re-signed so the confusion can continue.

When you look at improving the team, most of us feel the O-line is the place where it needs to begin. I also feel like the majority here feel we should be adding veterans and not spending high picks on the O-line, as we all know we’ve spent quite a few in the last 2 years as it is, one 1st RD pick in 2020 (Jackson), two 2nd RD picks, 2020 (Hunt), and 2021 (Eichenberg). In 2019, we spent a 3rd RD pick on C Michael Deiter and we spent a 4th RD pick in 2020 on OG Solomon Kindley. I could see spending another 1st RD potentially on center Tyler Linderbaum. If they feel he’d be an immediate upgrade and a long term solution at center, it’s hard to argue pulling the trigger on that. We can also pick up probably the best center available in free agency Ryan Jensen formerly of Tom Brady’s Bucs. Lots of different ways to approach it, and Chris Grier is well aware of that. Tough part is there will be high interest across the board on quality offensive linemen so if we want a player, we’ll have to be very aggressive and pay whatever is necessary in order to get them. Bargain hunting is not an option.

I’m sure Grier has a clear plan as to what he’s doing, and then fallback plans when those are foiled. Even though we have deep pockets, the competition will be so high there’s likely to be a quick frenzy to start the free agency period off. Other than money, is Miami a destination where players feel like they can win? We have a bright new Head Coach in Mike McDaniel, but he’s a first time Head Coach, so is winning immediately realistic? Of course we have nice climate, especially during the colder months of the season and we also have no state income tax which makes the money go even further. I look forward to seeing what Grier and the Dolphins do when the communications between NFL teams and players (agents) begin on Monday March 14th. I have a feeling the bottom line of the NFL channel feed will be ringing like a pinball machine. Hopefully we’re doing some of the ringing!

This is basically a perfect article. I have long been against adding chaos on the OL by asking guys to move around and learn new roles. How is Jackson going to improve year to year if you make him start over for year 2? All those lessons he learned won’t help… much. Leave the new guy at LG.

We can’t be worse is the measurement now?

7, you said we don’t know what the O is going to look like, I was saying some things we do know, pretty sure I didn’t say measurement

We finished 8-1, being not worse on O isn’t a bad thing, it’s a starting point

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I was quoting Tim with the “we don’t know what the offense is going to look like”. It’s his offseason go-to as a defense of legitimate concerns. Regardless, you’re veering away from the point of my post.

As intended by giving counter arguments

      • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

The point of counter arguments is to counter an argument that someone is actually making. You’ve made multiple posts arguing things I haven’t said or even inferred. I’m not interested in a David style conversation where you’re constantly shifting goal posts. I’ve made points. Counter those actual points.
        For example:
I don’t think we’ve done enough this offseason yet that would indicate an improvement enough for us to compete with the top teams of the AFC. If you believe we have, why do you think that and what supports that thought?

Bout time an fn politician tried to do something for us

Biden fired off a tweet Wednesday morning highlighting the painfully slow decline in gasoline prices in a bid to draw scrutiny to a decades-long trend that critics say hurts consumers by failing to pass savings along to drivers.
“Oil prices are decreasing, gas prices should too,” Biden said on Twitter. “Last time oil was $96 a barrel, gas was $3.62 a gallon. Now it’s $4.31. Oil and gas companies shouldn’t pad their profits at the expense of hardworking Americans.”

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

There is a lag btwn oil prices and gas prices at the pump. Turning raw oil into gasoline takes a month or two. Stuff showing up at the pump was bought at the higher prices.

Sherfield was one I was looking at as a late round pick back when we lost Landry in FA. I thought he was like Landry in a way but a little faster. Does well catching the ball in traffic and a really good special teamer. The loss of Hollins doesn’t seem to hurt as much now, if he makes the team.

It’s going to be his 5th season. I don’t think he is an ascending player and has reached his peak. His reception % on targets is meh. He is a tough, thickly built WR and willing blocker. He might squeeze in because of his knowledge of McD’s system and his ST play.

Long as we keep Parker think we are set at WR…. not that we can’t draft one later on or take BPA if a hot ticket falls. Also believe will only be 5 active on game day with the new O unless they add a special teams ace in for just that.

  10. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Mike thanks for your reply. I seem to be fixated on the OL right now. For mine the critical piece is the OC position.
Solving that means Tua gets some sort of a dependable pocket. Williams, Tretter/Bozeman and Hunt will be a vast upgrade on last year.
Hell I would even live with our 2 young OTs at a pinch. Prefer Fisher and Collins as well.Let the kids learn as BUs. My only wish is to make sure Davis is booted as far away as we can.

  11. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

BBM didn’t we take 12 WRs to camp last year?

    50. Christian Watson WR North Dakota State
    102. Leo Chenal LB Wisconsin
    121. Braxton Jones OT Southern Utah
    125. Cameron Jurgens OC Nebraska
    158. Amare Barno EDGE Virginia Tech
    224. CJ Verdell RB Oregon
    247. Skylar Thompson QB Kansas State

Yeah, like him also. He has the athleticism to be a 3 down ILB also. SUPER versatile. He is just an all-round FOOTBALL PLAYER, converting from a running QB, turned running back, turned fullback, turned linebacker. Was like All-American on both sides of the football.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Don’t keep your eye off Preston either. Given the cheap price ($2 mil) a value given his potential, but for sure are big Q’s about his injury history and fit with the O. But same could be said about Parker.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I give a C. We have not upgraded at ILB. OL is still a huge question mark. I think the ST/DB they brought in was not worth what he got (around 3mil per) for a mainly ST player. Only upgrade I see is at backup QB and at LG as long as he doesn’t continue to be a penalty machine. I have had enough of killed/stalled drives due to penalties.

  17. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  18. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

A lot of you seem unhappy with our overall strategy in FA and makes me think of the times when the team was making “splash moves” by handing out money for the biggest names. I like making this team solid with a number of less than elite signings.

Connor Williams is a prime example, but same could be said about almost all of them. And ain’t going old. Mostly grabbing young guys with an up arrow.

And yeah we still need more, but not too much unless you are looking for a real push to elite next season. Still have a decent amount of cap in the bank (enough for one stud splash like Collins or Wagner) and the draft is yet to happen.

  19. boulderfinfan's avatar boulderfinfan says:

Does anybody remember hearing that they were giving Kindley some practice snaps at Center last year?

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I like our moves so far. They’re not blowing me away, but I think they were all sound signings. Like most, I’d like one more veteran OL, but I also like that it looks like they might be willing to give our young OL a shot. Still, there will likely be a handful of OL prospects there for us at #29 if that’s the route they wanna go.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Too early to tell. I tend to like the let’s not go after the big shiny object approach that we have taken in years past but has never worked but we still need more help on OL. If we are done then this would be disappointing

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

We could sign Tretter, which would give us a solid 3 inside the OL and then take a T in the first or 2nd to compete with Jackson and Eich, this year of next. That would do it on the OL for me without giving up on what we have except Dieter maybe.

  23. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

  24. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Ken,
Yeah, you wanna see how these guys perform on the field with your team but with veteran players you, at least, have an idea of what they are as players. The whole grading signings or drafts is pointless, but I do think you can have some sense of veterans who have a body of work.

  25. Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Those numbers surprise me. I thought Armstead was head and shoulders better than the rest, and it was just his injuries that brought him down. Obviously not the case.

And Collins is better than I thought he was. I thought MF was being a little dramatic, but I’m actually agreeing now in wondering what is going on there. Why is Collins being shopped with those good numbers and on a very team friendly contract?

The rumors from that ‘some guy on twitter’ are we’re negotiating a new deal with him. Maybe Collins has let it be known he is unhappy with his contract and is threatening to hold out behind the scenes, or something of that nature, and rather than give him a new deal the Cowboys are moving him instead…

      • Wyoming85's avatar wyoming85 says:

Collins has been hurt and missed games for suspension.

I don’t know other than maybe the Boys expected to keep him on the cheap?

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

EIch, Jackson and Hunt are still on rookie contracts., as would a draft pick be. Least wouldn’t be too much money overall on the OL.

I know where you are coming from but #2RB and our FB are coming off season ending knee injuries and #1RB is only an improvement over Duke Johnson due to his receiving/YAC ability. Gaskin would be a #3 if we brought back Duke and Lindsay. If Mosert is 100%, hasn’t lost anything and stays healthy, our RB room will be solid.

All IMO, of course. It’s a wait and see for me on the RB room.

Yooooo! First off, thanks for sharing! I only ever knew that he got suspended last year… I knew nothing about any of the details you provided.

If you read me last evening, I just knew there was something weird going on but I couldn’t put my finger on it: this explains everything.

And if ya read my 2:21 PM comment today up the board, we now know that the Patsies* were merely trying to drive his cost up to us via trade… they never had any interest in signing La’el at all.

But now it looks like he’s going to the Bengals: he’s stated he wants to go to a competitor, he’ll be reunited with his old O-Line coach in Cincy, and he’s visiting them before us.

Cav Kong, thanks again for filling in the blanks as to why something felt amiss with the whole deal surrounding La’el. Cheers!

So if I’m reading the tea leaves correctly, Deshaun Watson is going to be a Falcon and Matt Ryan will be traded before the end of the day/evening.

Saints opened up all that cap space to land Watson, but they’ll be spurned… so maybe they just re-sign Terron Armstead.

Looks like La’el is going to be a Bengal, and we’re just about shit out of luck in further upgrading our O-Line via FA.

A-Rod won’t be happy about this!

So I guess this year’s popular phrase is “prime picks”…

  67. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

You would have to think the Packers informed Rodgers that this was a possibility when they were negotiating, no?

    Who cares? It’s the Packers….lol…and Rodgers….and drama…lol

I really could give a shit about anything outside of the Dolphins….

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Realize that we play the Packers this year (at home), so it’s a good thing the Packers traded Adams. But conversely, we may end up playing the Raiders in the playoffs (should we make it) with Adams.

Everything has a ripple effect on us Phins, Krishna.

It is still fun/interesting to talk about other NFL news, don’t you think?

Interesting? Even Ken admits TB was coming back….drama…. I actually thought he would too…

      Fun or funny….lol.

  71. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Still need to upgrade the OL, imo as in starter upgade.

Depth? How do you get depth with holes….oh my…I know not what I say..

To Rhino, if you’re out there…lol.

It sucks trying to find good, reliable people…..

    I don’t go young; they’re clueless…you might find a gem.

Retired teachers are amazing from what I have experienced. They know about team and devotion. Not sure what you’re looking for, but might want to consider mature at least.

What I get from that demographic is they always learn…they love to learn and they love to do it as a team.

Mostly, I’m not one who cares about what any other team is doing….except the Dolphins…FACTS!

  74. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I heard Rodgers knew what was going on the whole time. Adams wanted to be in Vegas with Carr and he just built a house there. It’s his dream life scenario.

  75. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

What I think is most interesting is retaining the D pretty much intact….I still believe a stud or two at MLB and DL is needed.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think this group is pretty damn good. Build on what they started.

      Edge Ogbah
      NT Davis
      DL Wilkins
      OLB Phillips
      OLB Van Ginkel
      ILB Baker
      ILB Roberts
      CB Howard
      CB Jones
      FS Holland
      SS Jones

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think I said that and agree! Lol…

We need more talent! Status quo is not good enough…lol

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s the base, then you swap out Davis for Butler/Sieler and Roberts for Needham in nickel. Then whoever the next DB is that makes up the dime defense – swapping out Van Ginkel.

This is a new defense but has a lot of games under their belt. I expect them to get better.

Phillips has the potential to become a monster Edge guy. I think people are sleeping on him. Not many 6-5 260 guys who can move and run like him as well as setting the edge. He was a rookie who showed a lot of progress throughout the season.

  76. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Is OD ok or Mrs. OD?

  77. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

That’s probably the 10th time I’ve thoughtt that…first time remembering to ask

  78. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

A ball control offense that can score more TDs with our pressure/turnover defense is complementary football. Our STs our solid.

We all know the OL has to play better and maybe it’s not all about adding a bunch of new players.

Tua is the key to all of this.

  79. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Krishna, didn’t OD say they were going on a trip to see family?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hey good to see you again. A blast from the past. I don’t remember your personality though. Not a bad thing, it’s just been awhile. Good to see you back. 🙂

  80. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

If we miss on Collins, there are still 2 RTs available. Daryl Williams Bills and David Quessenberry. Both have started at RT for the last 2 years. Only reason I want Fisher is, he will be cheap and can teach the kids. The last resort is to start Eich there. OC is the main position to fill. Pay Tretter his price or go younger with Bozeman.
Linderbaum will be long gone in the draft. This year to drop back into the second for extra picks. Such

  81. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

    Such an even draft.

  82. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

Tim I only posted for a short period, had a heart attack and then a bypass. Other ops as well but because I’m an Aussie and the time difference I been reading daily. Found my old password. So here I am. Healthy again.

  83. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we’re going to add some vet OL on the cheap after teams start to cut guys. We all know we’re looking for zone scheme type guys.

  84. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Throwing this out there, our new OL coach Matt Applebaum from BC knows TE Hunter Long too. A lot of our new coaches on offense are OL and TE coaches. I would guess blocking is a big deal. 🙂

  85. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Hunter Long was a 2021 3rd round pick who was one of the best TEs in the country. He had a rough rookie season with injury and then depth issues. Do we already right him off?

  86. uwantwat's avatar uwantwat says:

No, I think his role will be expanded. Curious as to why Smythe hasn’t be bought back yet. Cethan Carter should be let go. Interesting.

It’s one thing reading about what is happening and seeing pictures, but when you hear the suffering at an individual level and see how it affects those individuals, then multiply that up by how many individuals are affected, it’s grief on an untold scale. I say this with all respect to the people affected by that incident and not in any way to minimise it, but this will dwarf 9/11 when the dust has literally settled on this conflict. Which is a LONG time off yet. There was the funeral of a Russian serviceman on tv a couple of nights ago. His family were obviously devastated with grief. Most of them seemed to be convinced they were going to carry out a special operation, which the odious POS who sent them there still insists this is. They didn’t know they were going to war and there would be mass casualties. It’s all so fecking unnecessary.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I can only imagine. No pain like this in the US since the Civil War. And being in Mariupol is worse than being in Southeast England during the Blitz.

Just curious … have Fins shown ANY interest in Bozeman (2nd in pass block, 7th in run block) … a legit center. No idea what kind of money he wants but McD wants to run and this guy would lower the risk of McD’s plan implementation. I just feel center is slightly more urgent than T to run McDaniel’s offense.
