Don’t overlook Dolphins defense

It’s obvious that the focus of this offseason has been the offense. We traded for one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the NFL in Tyreek Hill. We brought in hands down the best LT available in free agency in Terron Armstead. We signed free agent RB’s Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert, as well as tendering Salvon Ahmed. We signed FA WR Cedrick Wilson formerly of the Dallas Cowboys. The huge contracts and majority of trades and signings happened on the offensive side of the ball, but we very quietly brought back our entire starting 11 on defense, as well as most of the depth players behind them. You can ask “Was our defense that great last year that we stand pat?” Yes, and no would be my answer. I think we have a great mix of young and veteran players, and most of our veteran players are still young.

Our RDE Christian Wilkins had an elite year, and there’s no reason to think he won’t either play as well or better this season. We have some young players that just started to show how good they can be such as SLB/DE Jaelan Phillips and safeties Jevon Holland and Brandon Jones. Raekwon Davis came off an early injury and wasn’t 100% last year and I expect bigger things from our young NT. Our veteran CB duo is still among the best CB tandems in the NFL if not the best. While X is the big playmaker, whether it’s an INT, a forced fumble or fumble recovery, he’s always around the football making plays. Byron Jones is a very underated cover corner. A lot of teams just avoid X and throw at Jones, and Jones is a top 10 rated CB on PFF, if you care about such things. Jones isn’t a WR playing CB, he’s a CB who just blankets his guy. Zero INT’s, but he rarely gets beat bad. Our two young safeties Holland and Jones looked better as the season went on and Eric Rowe is also a fine player. Jerome Baker is another underrated player, he plays every down and and does it all, from making the routine tackles to blitzing, to covering RB’s and TE’s, #55 is there. CB Nik Needham is one of my favorites and just a guy who steps in and gets it done. AVG hasn’t really busted out, and he may never do it, but he’s a guy that gets a lot of pressure, in fact he had the second most QB hits on the defense with 20 behind Emmanuel Ogbah, who we re-signed to a big contract. He’s worth every penny.

One thing that is easy to skip past is that the huge investment in the offense will help the defense. If we can keep the chains moving and score more than we did last year, which I believe is nearly certain, then the defense will be on the field less, and won’t be forced to carry the team as often as it did. If we can jump on some teams and take some leads for a change, that puts the pressure on the opposing offense and makes them more one dimensional, and will play right into our strength, better pass rush and lockdown, playmaking secondary. We were 22nd in points scored and 16th in points allowed. Say we go up to midpack or better in scoring points, to 16th or better, I’m almost going to guarantee you that our points allowed will drop into the top 10.

This team should be a lot of fun to watch. The speed on the offense with Mostert, Hill, Waddle and Gesicki is going to be fun. All of a sudden, that left side of the line with Armstead and Williams will be plowing spaces for the run game, the screen game, and add in FB Alec Ingold, you just have to expect a better result running the football. We brought back blocking TE Durham Smythe, Michael Deiter is our C, and our best OL from last season, RG Robert Hunt should stay right there. There should be a fierce battle for the RT spot, between Austin Jackson, Liam Eichenberg, Larnell Coleman and Robert Jones, and potentially another player who is not yet on the roster, either a draftee or post June cut. I understand we have a new system but I feel we’re in good hands with Mike McDaniel. I don’t expect him to struggle implementing his system. The players like him, listen to him. he r-e-l-a-t-e-s to them. They get him. He’s charismatic. Our team will be all in, and we will be much better on offense, we have so much more talent. Talent wins. So while the offense will be much better, don’t overlook the Dolphins defense!

Thanks for the Luau clips. I would have loved to been there. Done many Luau’s and they are always entertaining. We do one every year on the beach at our Chief’s club on NAS Pensacola. Pig cooked the traditional way in the ground. You can’t even get that at Luau’s in Hawaii anymore (cooked in the ground) due to “health concerns”. BS, I say.

The players and fans and media are sure to love this guy.
    I hope.

I think they love him already. The big test will be if we lose a game or two or more, and how the team responds to that. All is good until it’s not. I kinda hope we just don’t lose!

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think they are used to not starting out good. If so, I think they work through it and respond well. I will prepare myself for the growing pains on offense until they are clicking on all cylinders.

The worst part will be for us fans to get through all the media Tua hate if it does happen.

Hoping we start strong and punch the Florio’s in the face!

Two of my friends just died this past week, both of heart attacks.
Makes me even more glad to hear of Stanger’s recuperation.
I know I am “of a certain age,” but two in one week is a bit much.
One was a tennis buddy who in fact played Friday morning and died as soon as he got home.
The other was a guy I did some computer work for, very smart and successful guy, whose wife is very close with mine. I was worried about him because he weighed about 350 and had his own oxygen tank.
    RIP my friends RIP.

The ‘rocket science’ part of this comment makes me feel like I have missed some event or quote or something that makes this writer think that what he says will happen is so obvious and certain.

Im not going to get pulled into a political discussion so I won’t say anything substantive about any particular politician or point of view

But Im pretty sure the reason stanger posts clips bashing people on the right so often is not to appeal to people like me, but bc he’s so concerned about the direction of republicans bc it’s always been his party.

The notion that some one cant demonstrate reflection of his own party or he is cahoots with the opposition party is absurd and pretty consistent with tolatarian views and not a representative or diverse society

it might get under your skin but I know plenty of republicans that share the same views as him

More importantly the idea that he has to spread it out between the left and the right To reach some sort of utopian moderate view of reason is also absurd

He doesn’t have to pick a fight a me, bc he upsets you…..lol

The country is not designed for everyone to agree on everything, it’s a big country and it’s meant to function in the face of disagreement. It doesn’t matter if you are far left or far right, maybe your ideas are just what the country needs. Some one doesn’t have to prove they are reasonable by posting stuff about both sides

And to be frank, usually when you hate everyone, it’s closer to giving up than a sincere political belief, there’s enough contrarians out there that love to mock everyone and don’t offer any solutions. We don’t need anymore of those.

There’s not a sweet spot somewhere where everyone agrees on everything and suddenly the country operates better than ever. Sometimes extreme views are better for the Country. Sometimes they line up with more Americans than moderate views. Sometimes they don’t.

But if you have a vision for what you think is right for the country or what you think is right for a particular party, I don’t think you should made to feel compelled to spread it out.

I’ve never seen the media go after a pro sports team as they do our modern Dolphins. But then again, I’ve never seen an owner make so many gaffes as Steve Ross.

I don’t believe it’s anti-semitic in nature, rather the clown media clowning a clown. I used to get into it with many media members a decade ago: Mike Florio (yeah, I’m the OG who told y’all about his clown-ass in 2012), Evan Silva (FKA: “Silly Boy”), Dan Patrick, Colin Cowherder, and many others (some of whom are so-called Phins fans) who I don’t even recall at this point.

Winning cures all. As a dedicated Phins fan (I think ALL of us are!), I hope Steve Ross goes out on top… restoring glory to this once-proud franchise.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I knew you’d reply to this and a certain someone’s name would come up. LOL

I get Ross can be a bit of a goofball at times but players see who he hires and the upgrades he’s done to the stadium and facility, and not only do they re-sign, but players and coaches from other organizations come here.

I get that money and opportunity is a big deal. But who has said “I’m out of here?”

Ross is almost 82 years of age and doesn’t have time to play PR with all the media nonsense. The friggin reporters need to knock it off.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, man. Seriously, Steve Ross is paying out of his own pocket these massive signing bonuses to keep us under the cap and very competitive.

He may have been a total failure for years, but I see him going ALL-IN to bring us a Lombardi trophy before he sells. For that, I give him a tip of the hat.

Leading up to it, Stanger became very upset with me… and I felt guilty after we all read of what had occurred.

I can’t change hearts and minds on this blog, so I’m done trying. That doesn’t mean we can’t all have a good philosophical debate on politics (alluding to what Pigster posted earlier today), but I’m going to do my best to keep things football.

However, if and when blatant absurdity is posted, don’t get into your feelings after what ya said warrants a strong reply… and we all know such posts that seem to bring/seek attention. And I think everybody would agree with this sentiment.

    ———————
The scheduling of a trial is always up to the court. The attorneys may request a certain time frame but the court is not bound by that request and the scheduling is up to the court’s discretion

      Thanks, your honor

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

Yes, agree. My answer doesn’t really deviate from Ken’s

But the article does say the parties came to an agreement. The parties may have discussed the scheduling with the court and then reduced that discussion to an agreement

But courts always maintain their own calendars

If parties submit dates for a trial, that can’t be over the courts objection

Either the article is just wrong about there being an agreement or they did the agreement in conjunction with the court or with approval Of court concerning dates.

Some stuff about scheduling is going to vary dramatically from court to court and judge yo judge. Each judge has their own court rules people have to familiarize themselves with, I doubt the article did research into those sort of nuances – and if they did they are going to bore their readers to death

There are a lot of holes in the article. I also can’t explain Buzzbee’s comment about July if he agreed not to go to trial until March 2023 either – it’s kind of a collection of random facts that has me guessing when I read the article

The most important thing is I don’t really think that scheduling is an indicator of the merits of the case.
It might be something as simple as a court telling them they don’t have trial dates until 3/1 or an expectation that discovery won’t be complete until then

My suggestion is not to read to much into it

    Checking our roster
    Needs as of now, IMHO
    1) a backup Center (our biggest need since we literally have no one else who can play Center)
(or a Center so good that he becomes the starter and Dieter his backup, although in that case, the OL coach might move Dieter to RG and Hunt back to RT)
    2) a young backup to Ogbah (a real 265 lb+ DE, not just another OLB) (Scarlett? Hall???)
    3) a smashmouth RB such as a Zamir White as a change of pace to all the scatbacks we have (Doaks?)
    4) a boundary CB trustable as a playable backup in case a starter goes down for an extended period (Crossen?)
    5) a 4.4 40 WR6 (FO might think we do not need this and use a change of pace like PWilliams)
    6) a dependable part time KR / PR (when we don’t need another quick TD from Hill)
    7) a steady and trainable scout team QB (unless Toba trusts Streveler)
    … …
That’s a beautiful roster, if that is our worst set of needs.

Two Russian precision missiles hit a train station filled with people looking to flee the Eastern Ukraine today. So no doubt the station was the target.

At least 30 people were killed and over 100 were injured. Part of one missile was recovered intact (below). In case your Russian is rusty, “For the Children” is scrawled on it. Bastards.

Just listened to the early evening news Stanger – 25 cases of women aged 14-40 raped in the basement of one house.
A father shot, a mother raped multiple times because the drunken “soldiers” (I use the term loosely) threatened to kill the child. They then set the house on fire and left laughing.
16 y.o. girl raped in the street in front of her sister.
Man shot and his wife raped before 4 other soldiers came and took him away. She buried her husband in her back yard.
The scale of looting is unimaginable and the level of rape is only just starting to be understood, with many too traumatised to leave home, let alone report anything. Police gathering evidence to prosecute war crimes fwiw.
Worse than bastards in my view – fucking feral animals that deserve on the spot execution. God I wish NATO would join in now and squash this tyrant underfoot. I know it can’t and I know why, but……..

Pretty poor taste that SB7, imho, – to disrespect one of the core cultural tenets of the Mauri culture. I respect your honesty, but how would you feel if a Mauri sat there pissing himself laughing at the singing of the stars and stripes and the flyover before a football game?

I recently watched this Netflix show with my youngest daughter and wife called ‘Never Have I Ever…’. It’s a teeny kind of easy watching show that is surprisingly funny. It’s been a long time since I watched something that makes me laugh throughout the whole thing as consistently as this show does.

It’s about a teenage Indian-American girl who’s dad dies of a heart attack during one of her school recitals and about her family trying to put the pieces back together (I know, the stuff of comedy gold, lol), and John McEnroe narrates her life- (that in itself brings a ton of laughter as he constantly compares the stuff she is going through to his own experiences on the tennis court..)

Anyway, I was just thinking about one of many hilarious scenes. One of the teenage gals (Eleanor) has a mother who is an aspiring actress. There is a quick cutscene showing Eleanor as a younger child and her mother who is walking out the door says “Oh sweetie, what kind of mother would I be if I didn’t teach you to follow your dreams…which is why I’m leaving to follow my dreams.” Door slam. LMAO

I’m not sure why I told this story other than thinking about it just now made me laugh and I wanted to share…

But a crusherback like Zamir could fall to us at 102. It is still the 3rd round, after all.
And that type of back could come in for the 4th quarter after the speed guys get us a big lead and just punish a fatigued D while resting our smallish RBs and keeping the passrushers off Tua and the LBs away from Hill, Mostert, and Waddle when they might hit them late or dirty out of spite.

I don’t know if the “faux outrage” comment was directed at me SB7, but I can assure I am neither outraged nor faux. I described your comment as being in poor taste. It was my opinion (still is) like you expressed yours about the Haka.

The actions of Putin outrage me btw, by way of perspective.

Your comment about one being cool and the other goofy precisely proves my point. You are looking at it entirely through your own eyes, from your pov, and not even considering there may be someone who holds the exact opposite viewpoint, although you do go on to say you wouldn’t care. I have no idea how the tint of someone’s skin has any relevance to this whatsoever. “Fair-skinned” NZ players do the Haka, although it’s roots do lay in the traditions of the first settlers, I believe.

Bottom line though, is we all have the right to free speech, thank goodness. I also believe that just because you can say something, though, doesn’t mean you necessarily should. And I would certainly follow uwantwat’s advice – don’t laugh at a Mauri in person, especially once doing the Haka.

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I understand you were trying to equate the two in the name of culture, but it was a fail. One contains vast amounts of humor and the other one doesn’t.
I wasn’t making fun of anyone’s culture. I said the faces and sounds during the performance art made me laugh in the comfort of my own home. That’s a huge difference that continues to be missed. I’m also 100% sure you know nothing about the haka, otherwise you wouldn’t see it as something as beyond reproach. You should probably also do some research into Maori.

Here’s you answer to blue. Anybody who SCUBA dives knows that blues is a long wavelength of light. The deeper you dive the more other color wavelengths are absorbed until nothing is left but blue. So at 50 or so feet everything is blue(-ish). Unless you shine your light on something. Then you see other colors.

There are a lot of first rounders (QB’s) that bombed also. I bet if I compiled a list of all the first round busts it would exceed the list of 2nd RD busts
