Don’t overlook Dolphins defense

It’s obvious that the focus of this offseason has been the offense. We traded for one of the most dynamic wide receivers in the NFL in Tyreek Hill. We brought in hands down the best LT available in free agency in Terron Armstead. We signed free agent RB’s Chase Edmonds and Raheem Mostert, as well as tendering Salvon Ahmed. We signed FA WR Cedrick Wilson formerly of the Dallas Cowboys. The huge contracts and majority of trades and signings happened on the offensive side of the ball, but we very quietly brought back our entire starting 11 on defense, as well as most of the depth players behind them. You can ask “Was our defense that great last year that we stand pat?” Yes, and no would be my answer. I think we have a great mix of young and veteran players, and most of our veteran players are still young.

Our RDE Christian Wilkins had an elite year, and there’s no reason to think he won’t either play as well or better this season. We have some young players that just started to show how good they can be such as SLB/DE Jaelan Phillips and safeties Jevon Holland and Brandon Jones. Raekwon Davis came off an early injury and wasn’t 100% last year and I expect bigger things from our young NT. Our veteran CB duo is still among the best CB tandems in the NFL if not the best. While X is the big playmaker, whether it’s an INT, a forced fumble or fumble recovery, he’s always around the football making plays. Byron Jones is a very underated cover corner. A lot of teams just avoid X and throw at Jones, and Jones is a top 10 rated CB on PFF, if you care about such things. Jones isn’t a WR playing CB, he’s a CB who just blankets his guy. Zero INT’s, but he rarely gets beat bad. Our two young safeties Holland and Jones looked better as the season went on and Eric Rowe is also a fine player. Jerome Baker is another underrated player, he plays every down and and does it all, from making the routine tackles to blitzing, to covering RB’s and TE’s, #55 is there. CB Nik Needham is one of my favorites and just a guy who steps in and gets it done. AVG hasn’t really busted out, and he may never do it, but he’s a guy that gets a lot of pressure, in fact he had the second most QB hits on the defense with 20 behind Emmanuel Ogbah, who we re-signed to a big contract. He’s worth every penny.

One thing that is easy to skip past is that the huge investment in the offense will help the defense. If we can keep the chains moving and score more than we did last year, which I believe is nearly certain, then the defense will be on the field less, and won’t be forced to carry the team as often as it did. If we can jump on some teams and take some leads for a change, that puts the pressure on the opposing offense and makes them more one dimensional, and will play right into our strength, better pass rush and lockdown, playmaking secondary. We were 22nd in points scored and 16th in points allowed. Say we go up to midpack or better in scoring points, to 16th or better, I’m almost going to guarantee you that our points allowed will drop into the top 10.

This team should be a lot of fun to watch. The speed on the offense with Mostert, Hill, Waddle and Gesicki is going to be fun. All of a sudden, that left side of the line with Armstead and Williams will be plowing spaces for the run game, the screen game, and add in FB Alec Ingold, you just have to expect a better result running the football. We brought back blocking TE Durham Smythe, Michael Deiter is our C, and our best OL from last season, RG Robert Hunt should stay right there. There should be a fierce battle for the RT spot, between Austin Jackson, Liam Eichenberg, Larnell Coleman and Robert Jones, and potentially another player who is not yet on the roster, either a draftee or post June cut. I understand we have a new system but I feel we’re in good hands with Mike McDaniel. I don’t expect him to struggle implementing his system. The players like him, listen to him. he r-e-l-a-t-e-s to them. They get him. He’s charismatic. Our team will be all in, and we will be much better on offense, we have so much more talent. Talent wins. So while the offense will be much better, don’t overlook the Dolphins defense!

    BBM,
I liked that Thornton prospect you posted about on the last page. Seems to have good concentration and catch radius to go along with the size and speed. He does look skinny, but so does Jameson Williams. Thornton wouldn’t be a bad flyer to grab in the later rounds, but we have a lot of receivers already. I’m not sure we’d be able to stash him on the practice squad without getting poached at some point.

We may be drafting for future replacement players moreso than for 2022 depth

But since many of our LBS are on 1 year contracts and we can use an ILB, pretty sure we’re taking one in the 3rd or 4th

I wouldn’t be surprised, if we didn’t draft OL, since we have enough youth there

CB would be my 2nd choice, too much $ at the position

7th rd can really just be BPA

    • sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

We still need another Center on this team for competition/depth and I wouldn’t mind seeing James Cook drafted either. I think I’d rather grab a top LB and Corner with our firsts next year.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I agree we need another young fast boundary CB,
as our backups are not that great once we lost Coleman,
although the coaches seem to trust Trill Williams and Elijah Campbell.
7th round is a good place to take a chance on a skinny WR like Thornton or a troubled edge rusher like Isaiah Thomas or a borderline UDFA EDGE like Jeremiah Moon.

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think our FO really likes James Cook,
as he seems to fit the mold for RB that they want in McDaniel’s offense.
Especially since Mostert gets hurt so much.
    … …
I mean, he is Dalvin Cook’s little brother, and even though he is physically smaller,
not that much, and he has those special feet like Dalvin,
so if he could give us 75% of what Dalvin has done,
that would be great for a late 3rd round pick.

  6. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Mike Gesicki was the team’s second-leading receiver in both yardage and receptions this season, totaling 780 receiving yards on 73 receptions (10.7 avg.). Gesicki also led all NFL tight ends with 324 receiving yards in the fourth quarter and overtime this season. Gesicki’s 73 receptions matched the Dolphins’ single-season tight end receptions record.

  7. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    PS:
James Cook played at Georgia which is the very top competition there is,
and they could recruit any RB they want, so he must’ve been highly regarded.
He ran a 4.42 40 at the combine, so he’s fast enough for McDaniel’s offensive prototype.
Plus he catches well and can run real routes.
    … …
He is from Miami, so the heat won’t bother him.
    … …
He’s light in the lower half, though, so he struggles in pass pro.

  8. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Miami had 48.0 sacks this year, which was just one shy of the team record of 49.0 sacks set in 1983 and 2005. The total was tied for fifth-most in the NFL this year and the Dolphins had 14 different players record at least a half-sack. The Dolphins also led the NFL in passes defensed (88) and ranked second in QB hits (121).

  9. sb7mvp's avatar sb7mvp says:

I know Grier gets a lot of grief, but overall he’s done really well and put this team in a position to succeed. The biggest problem with our team is that it’s still really young and inexperienced. We haven’t been able to establish a culture of winning.

QB- Upcoming young guy with a winning record despite a lack of weapons or functioning o-line and a quality backup.
RB- lots of guys in a running back friendly system, addition of FB
WR- Two of the top players at this position along with some nice role players
TE- Mismatch receiver Gesicki, with overall solid guy in Smythe
O-Line – Partially addressed and still time to add pieces – Youth with room to grow with good coaching (shut up Ken lol)
DE – Solid Vet in Ogbah Paired with up and comer Philips
DL- Good, solid youth in Wilkens, Davis, Seiler, Butler
LB – Baker, Van Ginkel, and an Island of misfit toys that can get the job done, currently our biggest weakness in comparison to other positions
CB- All Pro X opposite lockdown corner jones and solid Nickel corner Needham. Lots of youth and potential behind these guys.
S- future all pro Holland and solid 3rd round pickup Jones

This is just a glancing look at the roster as is. We still have draft firepower to add to this team in 2023 and make it even better and I’m not even counting the upgrades we’ve received on our offensive coaching staff to elevate the play of our current guys.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

STs are in good hands also (pardon the oxymoronic pun)
We’ve got the best FG kicker in team history,
and a punter who’s made all pro and won a SB,
and the best LS to come out of college in his class,
and a return man with a KO return TD and 4 Punt return TDs in the NFL.

I still think we need a ILB next to Baker vs LB by committee….seems like a hole to me.

Starting to think coaching may be able to improve OL performance since we filled 2 holes on it. Love for Dieter to improve significantly or find a replacement….strong backup with potential to replace at a minimum, is still needed, imo.

I have no idea what’s in store at RT….

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The reason I don’t see ILB as a big need is because we play so much more nickel and dime like most teams do and Baker is the 3 down LB. On run down situations Roberts is a big hitter inside when we need that. I’d prefer we add another LB who can do what Baker does in case he ever goes down. Not sure with our picks we’ll be able to land that but you never know, Baker was a 3rd round pick.

As for RT I think Jackson and Eichenberg are going to compete there unless we move Hunt or Collins there.

Chenal is limited in man pass coverage but fine in zone. With his monster size coupled with his quickness shooting gaps he is almost unstoppable. TE’s and RB’s can’t block him. If an OL is not squared up on him when he is blitzing, they can’t stop him either. The way our defense is run, he could play as a 3 down LB as he is very good at blitzing and does well sitting down in zones and reading QB eyes.

Yeah he may attack the wrong gap at times on run downs due to him trying to make a play before trying to diagnose the play or something like that. That can be coached out of him.

I don’t know about that BBM – If we’re going to have one LB on the field it would be #55, and if we’re going to have 2, I would think AVG or even Phillips as an additional pass rusher would be more likely.

    To get Chenal I traded #102 plus a 2023 2nd and 2024 3rd. for #45.

    #45 ILB Leo Chenal
    #125 OC Cam Jurgens
    #224 DT DJ Dale
    #247 RB Kevin Harris

Not sure how I feel giving up 2 future picks like that.

With all this said, I don’t see us trading up to the second round for someone who is a second rounder. I don’t see even Grier trading up that far unless it is a really special player. I do think Chenal has the potential to be special but don’t see us trading that far to get him. I could see us trading up into the top of the 3rd for someone who slides from the 2nd round.

I just look at all the players we are bringing in for visits. They are all 3rd round and later prospects.

Again, I don’t see us trading up unless someone they feel is special has slid down.

I could see them going with who they have brought in already:
    #102 ILB/OLB Channing Tindall
    #124 OT/OC Zach Tom
    #224 BPA
    #247 BPA

I need to light a scented candle. Whole house stinks like liver. We have 2 small dogs we inherited who won’t eat dry food so we would mix can food with the dry. Then we found out how much fillers and cancer causing preservatives were in the canned food so now I make our own and they love it.

I chop up 1 pound of beef liver (while still frozen so not as nasty), dice up 2 sweet potatoes, add 1 can of green beans and 2 cups of instant brown rice. Vet says use brown rice as white rice is not good for them. Put it all in a pot and boil it up.

Put some in a tub in fridge then bag up the rest and freeze it. One batch usually lasts a week for our one medium size dog and 3 little ones.

The John Jenkins and Morestead contracts finally hit. After subtracting the bottom 2 from the top 51, they only dented our cap space by a little.

We still have 20.2 mil to play with (per Over The Cap). SPOTRAC says more.

The cap hit for the next 5 players at the bottom of the top 51 is at around 1 mil. So, anyone we sign, we can basically subtract 1 mil to figure their cap hit.

If we were to sign Tretter at 8 mil and Ingram at 5mil, we would only be subtracting another 11 mil from our current top 51 cap space. We would still have around 9.2 left.

Our roster is at 70 right now with 20 spots available. Our 4 draft picks and say about 12-14 UDFA’s, we are still looking at about 2 or more FA signings.

Out of the 4 draft picks and 12-14 UDFA’s (16-18 players), only the 3rd rounder will probably crack the top 51. We have plenty of money.

  72. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When Tua was drafted most here said their only concern was for injury

When I mentioned he had a weak arm, most disagreed

When watching his tape, before the draft, I also noticed there was something different about him, he played fast, smooth and was polished, and comparing him to Herbert was night and day, so he’s who I wanted to draft

The light came on for Herbert about the time of his final bowl game, tape I didn’t see, and he’s been different ever since, but I digress as that isn’t my point

My point is Tua is still that QB I watched from Bama, the best college QB I’d ever seen at the time

IMO Brady has had the most success of any QB, because he’s mostly been unstoppable

Unstoppable because he takes what you give him, and mostly throws high percentage passes

Why did we win 8 of 9 last year? Because Tua has a lot of those same qualities Brady has, just can’t beat you with a strong arm, (although he is accurate deep) but is more mobile

Why were the ’72 Fins the only undefeated team? Because they used a lot of high percentage plays too and had a good D

When Herbert is on he’s unstoppable, when he’s not he is, result – win some games looking great, then lose some games while looking just ok

Tua’s game translates to looking the same consistently every week, this is what I expect from him this year

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I was very high on Herbert and worried about Tua being too small to take the pounding.
      … …
Since then, Tua has gotten way more jacked and weighs 217, which at 6′ ish is plenty stocky.
Herbert has played about as I expected which to me will be somewhat like Phillip Rivers’s career.
Tua could (should) become Brees 2.0 (NextGen Brees, not CloneBrees)) which would be awesome.
      That’s like Bob Griese 5.2. (2 SBs)
I still don’t see Tua as having a “weak” arm. OF course he is not like the Bills guy whatshisname, but being able to hit a golf ball 600 yards is overkill.
I think Tua can scramble well enough to punish a D for laying off or leaving a lane open, and he is not a sitting fuck back there, so that is good.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

When you can hit a golf ball 600 yards you don’t have to be in a perfect body stance to throw it deep, you can just flick the ball and it goes 50 yards

Tua on the other hand doesn’t get the ball downfield quick enough, every throw is a lob, so unless the receiver is wide open he’s throwing contested balls prone to ints, and why he likely doesn’t throw downfield much

It’s the perfect time to bring a LB in like him who can learn over the course of the year from Roberts and Co.
    ___
I agree with this assessment, I was just saying I wouldn’t trade up for him.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree about not trading up for him also, unless he slides to the 3rd round say in the late 70’s or later where it will cost less. Then again, I would also be happy with Tindall, Anderson or Clark at #102.

Naples, sometimes when you “copy image address” the file route will include modifiers to change the size or the placement of the photo. If it is a .JPG it will often be followed by a ?and then the modifiers. If you delete everything after .jpg (the modifiers) then the photo will post here no problem.

I still have problems if it is a .png file. They seem to be hit or miss.

When you paste look at the file address and find the .jpg and delete everything back to the g of jpg.

I can’t wait to see what our offense comes out and does this season. I know it will be better scheme wise, but I want to see it. No more having three guys on one side of the line run routes that end up within 5 yards of each other! We have TWO weapons now Waddle and Hill should be on different sides of the ball. If see plays called that bunch them within one zone again like I saw constantly last year I am going to lose all confidence pretty quick.

Never want to wish my time / life away, but I want shit to hurry up already! LOL

This thought came to mind because I have read 3-4 blog post or newspaper articles since we traded for Hill that say you can’t double both of those guys and it SHOULD make it an easy pick for TUA 1a or 1b because they can’t double both. That got me thinking about the formations and routes we ran last season with the Cocos and how they were constantly being shut down by one zone guy.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

that was a crappy offense, wasn’t it?
My high school ran more innovative shit than that.
      … …
apropos to what you said above, tape from McDaniel offense shows lots of misdirection and motion pre snap to both read the LBs and confuse their keys.
Many times 2 or 3 players on the defense were schemed right out of the play from the getgo, so it was 10 on 8 in favor of the offense, which is much easier to block, which should help out our OL.

    ——————-
Absolutely agreed… the cost is too high, IMO, and not just for Leo Chenal. Thus, we’ve demonstrated roughly what it would take to trade up for a decent prospect in the 2nd round… hence the purpose of the exercise.

That said — unless we love a ‘can’t miss prospect’ — I don’t forecast any radical trade-ups. Maybe slight trade-ups, but nothing big like jumping into round 1 or 2. Again, JMO.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It definitely has to be for a prospect that we have a high grade on and he’s still there in the 2nd round where we feel we can pounce.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Right on, and that’s should we choose to pull the trigger. The cost will be high, as BBMike and I have demonstrated… via PFF, at least.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m really not big on trading future capital to entertain the needs of today, being so much can happen over the course of one year. For instance, what IF for whatever crazy reason either Mike McDaniel or Chris Grier are fired? Having a thin 2023 Draft class would deter a future HC or GM from coming here.

IF we pull the trigger on a trade-up using future capital, we’d better be DAMN sure the player is worth it… dare I say a potential generational talent.
