Underrated – “And it feels so good”

The Dolphins defensive line is definitely an underrated unit in the NFL, by fans (including myself), by NFL talking heads, and of course by own local beat writers. It’s more than just the 3 guys pictured above, it’s the depth of the unit. Add in one of the best rotational DL in the NFL in Brandon Sieler, and backup NT John Jenkins and backup DE Adam Butler and it truly is a complete unit. It’s not the flashiest unit, and more than likely most NFL fans don’t know the front 3 pictured above by name. Emmanuel Ogbah has been about as steady as they come. He gets pressure so often, including 2 seasons ago when he had inadequate pressure coming from anywhere else. In 2020, Ogbah had 9 sacks and 21 QB hits, the team totaled 41 sacks. In 2021, Ogbah once again totaled 9 sacks and added 24 QB hits, the team though totaled 48 sacks. Christian Wilkins is an invisible elite player. Wilkins last season finished with 89 tackles (2nd on the team behind #55), 4.5 sacks and 13 QB hits. Raekwon Davis played injured most of last season but I have so much optimism that he will have a really nice season provided he stays healthy.

It’s not just the DL that’s underrated, it’s the entire defense. I’ll be the first to admit that I feel and have said so many times that for once I would like the defense to play like a championship defense and just shut down the other team, like our team gets shut down so often, especially when playing our own division rival Buffalo Bills. The problem is, the Bills just have a great offense, and Josh Allen gives them that running threat that we so often struggle with, while our own offense has been far from a juggernaut. The Bills averaged 28.5 PPG last season, good for 3rd in the NFL. No easy task to stop them, but 2 teams in particular shut them down, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills were somewhat flat on opening day in Pittsburgh, only scoring 16 points. They won the TOP battle 33:17 – 26:43 and only lost the turnover battle 1-0. They had more yardage on the ground and especially in the air but couldn’t out the ball in the endzone. The 9-6 loss to the Jaguars was an aberration. Or was it? The jaguars stifled the run game, held both Singletary and Allen in check, sacked Allen 4 times and ran the ball themselves 27 times, for only 70 yards. They turned the Bills over 3 times. This is the kind of effort I’d love to see just once (or twice?) from our defense against the Bills.

OK, here’s the good news. I think there’s every reason to expect more from this defensive unit. This is a defense on the rise. Rookie OLB/DE Jaelan Phillips exploded toward the end of the season. He should be as good or better than that player was last season. We added an athletic inside LB in the draft, Channing Tindall who should help not only with Bills QB Josh Allen, but he can cover and will free up #55 Jerome Baker to create more havoc. AVG is still a player on the rise and I expect better things from as well this season. Did I mention we signed Melvin Ingram? Depth is better, Elandon Roberts is still a nice 1 or 2 down thumper in the middle, but Tindall gives them the speed and athleticism we’ve needed. We have the 2 veteran cover corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Both are excellent cover guys but X is clearly the playmaker, imposing his will on games so often. It’s not just INT’s, he creates forced fumbles and just has a knack for finding that football. The safeties are quite the trio, and underrated once again comes to mind. Jevon Holland had an excellent rookie season, and SS Brandon Jones seems to be becoming a full time starter and combines great tackling with strong blitzing abilities. Jones had 5 sacks last season and had the 3rd most tackles on the team, behind Wilkins and Baker.

Depth, depth, depth. Sieler, Jenkins, Butler. Ingram, Tindall, Eguavoen and Riley. Needham, Rowe, Igbinoghene. Is it possible we actually see the emergence of former 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene? He’s been showing up in camp, and it would be great for the talented young player to finally make it in the NFL. Nik Needham is one of my favorite Dolphins players, a guy who plays above his head all the time, max effort guy who does whatever the coaches ask. We basically brought last year’s defense back intact. We added a nice rookie LB (Channing Tindall) and a nice veteran LB/DE (Melvin Ingram). Once again, this is an ascending unit. If the offense can hold up their end of the bargain, be more balanced and be able to keep opposing defenses on the field longer, just imagine how much better our defense can be? All this remains to be seen, but it’s hard not to be optimistic that it can be so.

Nice Mike E. and thanks again.

I am very hopeful we will/should be better on D this year.

Raekwon Davis was coming on as a beast after he came back from his injury. Definite improvement in overall line play in the later part of the season.

Ogbah also knocks down a ridiculous number of passes. He had something like 11 or 12 last year, including a run of 6-8 games in a row. (I don’t remember the exact numbers, but he led the league in # and number of games in a row)

Great survey of our defensive personnel, Mike E.
I think this is truly one of those examples of the whole is a better than the sum of its parts.
I think this means that we have so many guys who can step up and make a play at any given moment that the offense never knows where the pain is coming from next.
No guy on offense can relax and coast or assume he’ll win one on one.
Plus we have tons of speed in the front 7 and at least 4 ball hawks on the back end.

We’ve mentioned he didn’t start out with Mahomes and he’s looked about the same with every QB

I did however see a video yesterday with Mahomes hitting him inscribe 69 air yards down the field

Part of Tua’s problem with the media is how he looks throwing, it doesn’t exactly look effortless, like some others, so it appears he puts everything into a 45-50 yard throw

Rivers also had a funny throwing motion, that used his shoulder to get power, much like a boxer, he also looked uncomfortable throwing

For every QB, that can flick the ball 50-60 yards, there’s a QB that can use his feet to buy a little time, then make the same throw, sure the guy flicking gets in there quicker, but…splitting hairs

Tua isn’t going to be the reason we win the division or if we don’t, not the guy, that causes us to not win it, just another link in the chain

I read a compelling argument with facts asserting that Tua is a Top 10 QB in the league.

  41. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

One of the things that study did that I think is important is that it disassociated his 2020 data from his 2021. It’s really not fair to speak about “Tua’s career” numbers, since it’s only 2 years long.
This means that his rookie year is almost HALF the stats.
Almost all QBs have their worst statistical year as a rookie, for obvious reasons, and those who don’t have a crummy first year as starter are usually those who sat for a year or more before taking over. Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes and many more do not have true rookie year stats weighing down their career numbers and people’s impressions of them, as well.
What if the first year for those guys was them in their very first days in the NFL?
What if they had played their first year under much less talented HCs?
What if their first year was a COVID season?
So let’s look at where Tua was ranked in 2021 only.

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Data from stats don’t lie. It’s math and has proven over time to be accurate. Data from stats reveal that Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was a legitimate top ten NFL quarterback in 2021. For anyone counting,
Tagovailoa had 35 categories where he was in the top ten of all NFL starting quarterbacks.

  43. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

First off, Tua’s W-L record in 2021 was an extrapolated 12-5 (rounded up),
or if you are a pessimist, round the fraction down to 11-6.
I think if we average 11-6 or 12-5 every year for the next 10-12 years,
I’ll be happy with Tua’s career.

  44. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tua has never QB’d for a sub 500 team.

  45. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Tua ranked 1st in the NFL in 9 categories.

  46. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

most RPO passing yards in 2021… 847
best completion percentage in the red zone of any starting quarterback in 2021– 65.4%
highest clean pocket completion percentage in the NFL — 76.3%
least amount of pocket time in the NFL in 2021 — 2.1 seconds
the most aggressive attempts (throws that are into tight coverage) — 19.3%
least number of passes batted away — 1
least number of sacks — 20
highest passer rating on the goal line — 118.8
highest touchdown percentage on the goal line with five or more passes — 80%
PS: He threw no INTs on the goal line, so he is tied for 1st in that as well.

  47. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

OK so pocket time is an OL stat,
but still it is important to know he fought against this to win 8 games out of 12.
and OK so tight coverage attempts shows his WRs were not good at getting open
(or did not have time to get separation),
but considering his high completion percentage, this is a good reflection on Tua.

  48. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

And even with only 2.1 seconds to throw, Tua took the fewest sacks.
And even though he is “short,” he only had 1 batted pass.

Like, what a lot of people don’t know, like, I’m not just sitting just saying this because he’s my quarterback now. . . . like, I’m not trying to get more targets right now, but what I’m trying to say is Tua is that deal, bro. . . . Bro, he has a heck of an arm, bro. He’s accurate. He can throw the deep ball, and he actually goes through his reads, where people are like on Twitter like saying, ‘Oh, he doesn’t go through his reads.’ Man, this dude is that dude.”

So I went through the list of available FAs right now, and Tak McKinley caught my eye due to his young age (26). Some may characterize him as a bust of a 1st round draft pick, but he’s not exactly a bust. 53 career QB hits in 60 career games (27 games started) with 20 career sacks.

The thing with Tak is that he was projected/expected by nearly all to become an NFL LB. Instead, he’s only ever played DE in the NFL, with the Falcons for 4 years and with the Browns last year.

His 4.59 40-time shows on game tape and that should be easily utilized at either the OLB or SAM positions. He’s got an 8.3% career missed tackle percentage from the DE position. For the sake of comparison, Joey Bosa (also 26 years old and DE) has a career missed tackle percentage of 14.7%… and Bosa is 3″ taller and 20 pounds heavier.

What I’m saying is that Tak could play a hybrid role in our Defense as a pass-rusher (DE/OLB), possibly more effective from the LB position than the DE position. Don’t know how he’d fare with open-field tackling as a LB from the beginning, but his statistics and attributes show that he’d probably be pretty solid.

He shouldn’t cost a lot of $$$ at this point and I feel he’s worth kicking the tires.

Not familiar with him but never against potential talent at a cheap price. Why do you figure he is still a FA? Seems a guy like him would be wanting to meld into a new team and new team by now.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Tak was my selection for us Phins in the 1st round of the 2017 Draft. I figure he’s a FA because he’s been played out of place as a DE. He ALWAYS should have been played as a LB, IMO.

His stats don’t suck, but he’s certainly been underwhelming as a 1st round pick. Too many people want to apply the ‘bust label’ on him as a result. He’s still young with extreme talent.

  52. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I love the deep ball, but guess what though? I done expanded my game. So now I’m doing a lot more than just the deep ball now. I’m doing intermediate routes. I’m doing short routes. So now I actually need a guy who can just get me the ball now, on a dagger route, on a corner route, on a shallow cross route. You know, right now, right in my chest. So I can do the rest. I make you look good now.”

WHAT ELSE DID YOU EXPECT WHEN THE TWO TOP GOALIES IN THE WORLD square-off in the decisive game of the NHL’s Eastern Conference Championships? YES, both Tampa Bay’s Andrei Vasilevskiy and the Ranger’s Igor Sheshterkin were both brilliant tonight!! But the difference was the Bolts’ captain Steven Stamkos, who scored BOTH of Tampa Bay’s goals this evening in a gut-wrenching 2-1 win in what turned out to be a dilly of a game after a so-so start!
    ————
Yes, Tampa Bay was given up for dead when they fell behind Toronto 3 games to 2 in the first round of the Playoffs. They responded in round 2 with a 4-game SWEEP of the favored Florida Panthers!
    ———–
In this final Eastern Conference championship round, the Lightning lost the first two games and many thought they had NO CHANCE AT ALL!! They’re response was to SWEEP their next four games against the Rangers to advance to their THIRD STRAIGHT STANLEY CUP FINALS WHERE, ONCE, AGAIN, THEY WILL BE DECIDED UNDERDOGS!!
    ———
    DON’T BELIEVE IT!! Top playoff goal scorer Brayden Point should be back for game one on Wednesday Night in Denver. Meanwhile, the Avalanche will try to shake off 9 days of rust after their sweep of Edmonton. The “experts” in Las Vegas believe Colorado will blow-out the Lightning. Take advantage of their mis-read of this series and lay down some U.S. long green on the underdog Lightning! Tampa Bay has;
    1) The best goalie in the World;
    2) The best head coach in the NHL;
3)The best defenseman in the NHL (Hedman)
    4) The best trio of clutch players in the NHL (Kucherov, Stamkos and Palat).
    5) The top playoff goal scorer in the prior TWO Stanley Cup Playoffs (Point)
    6) Uncle “MO” – – – Momentum during the last 10 days!!
    ——–
The WESTERN CONFERENCE of the N.H.L. is inferior to the Eastern Conference when it comes to the overall quality of players, especially GOALIES!! This will become readily apparent when the Finals are completed.

The historic “THREE-PEAT” by the Tampa Bay Lightning is now within reach!!

This was a first. Just got a visit from a Hispanic guy who said he was from Orlando but didn’t have a valid ID and spoke broken English. He wanted to bond 2 Hispanic women out of jail who both have $30,000 bonds for human trafficking. I pulled up their arrest reports. They are here illegally and avoided border patrol about 4 months ago. They had similar stories in their reports in that they came here via the cartel and have to work for the cartel. One said she was scared for her life. These people who are brought to the border by the cartel and avoid border patrol are supposed to show up at a designated town. They are then picked up by these human trafficking mules (like these 2 women) and taken to a city designated by the cartel to work for the cartel. The guy had over $8,000 in cash on him. I told him the bond fee is only $6,000 to get both of them out, but they are not citizens so I would also need $60,000 cash put up as collateral. I told him they wouldn’t be released from jail anyway because they had a hold for ICE. He got a worried look on his face and left.

Right on, I’m just trying to turn every stone over to see if we can improve in some way — even if nominally — at this point in the offseason. It’s not as though I’m pounding the table to sign Tak, just looking for angles to take advantage of, on the cheap. Sign Tak after week 2, and that money won’t be guaranteed, for example.

Conversely, there’s still a big fish out there… his name is JC Tretter and we can easily afford him being $17M under the salary cap. I think we’re waiting to see if Connor Williams (or Michael Deiter) would be better than signing Tretter to the Center position. We shall see!

I found that if I sleep more upright rather than flat, it helps keep it away. I would wake up and the room would be spinning, I’d get out of bed and start walking sideways but I was trying to walk straight. Like if you ever played that drinking game where you take a baseball bat, you lean over and put your head on it while it’s upright touching the ground, and then run around it a few times, and then try to go the table where you have to drink your drink, it’s a relay race, but you’re so dizzy, you run sideways instead of to your target area.
