Underrated – “And it feels so good”

The Dolphins defensive line is definitely an underrated unit in the NFL, by fans (including myself), by NFL talking heads, and of course by own local beat writers. It’s more than just the 3 guys pictured above, it’s the depth of the unit. Add in one of the best rotational DL in the NFL in Brandon Sieler, and backup NT John Jenkins and backup DE Adam Butler and it truly is a complete unit. It’s not the flashiest unit, and more than likely most NFL fans don’t know the front 3 pictured above by name. Emmanuel Ogbah has been about as steady as they come. He gets pressure so often, including 2 seasons ago when he had inadequate pressure coming from anywhere else. In 2020, Ogbah had 9 sacks and 21 QB hits, the team totaled 41 sacks. In 2021, Ogbah once again totaled 9 sacks and added 24 QB hits, the team though totaled 48 sacks. Christian Wilkins is an invisible elite player. Wilkins last season finished with 89 tackles (2nd on the team behind #55), 4.5 sacks and 13 QB hits. Raekwon Davis played injured most of last season but I have so much optimism that he will have a really nice season provided he stays healthy.

It’s not just the DL that’s underrated, it’s the entire defense. I’ll be the first to admit that I feel and have said so many times that for once I would like the defense to play like a championship defense and just shut down the other team, like our team gets shut down so often, especially when playing our own division rival Buffalo Bills. The problem is, the Bills just have a great offense, and Josh Allen gives them that running threat that we so often struggle with, while our own offense has been far from a juggernaut. The Bills averaged 28.5 PPG last season, good for 3rd in the NFL. No easy task to stop them, but 2 teams in particular shut them down, the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Bills were somewhat flat on opening day in Pittsburgh, only scoring 16 points. They won the TOP battle 33:17 – 26:43 and only lost the turnover battle 1-0. They had more yardage on the ground and especially in the air but couldn’t out the ball in the endzone. The 9-6 loss to the Jaguars was an aberration. Or was it? The jaguars stifled the run game, held both Singletary and Allen in check, sacked Allen 4 times and ran the ball themselves 27 times, for only 70 yards. They turned the Bills over 3 times. This is the kind of effort I’d love to see just once (or twice?) from our defense against the Bills.

OK, here’s the good news. I think there’s every reason to expect more from this defensive unit. This is a defense on the rise. Rookie OLB/DE Jaelan Phillips exploded toward the end of the season. He should be as good or better than that player was last season. We added an athletic inside LB in the draft, Channing Tindall who should help not only with Bills QB Josh Allen, but he can cover and will free up #55 Jerome Baker to create more havoc. AVG is still a player on the rise and I expect better things from as well this season. Did I mention we signed Melvin Ingram? Depth is better, Elandon Roberts is still a nice 1 or 2 down thumper in the middle, but Tindall gives them the speed and athleticism we’ve needed. We have the 2 veteran cover corners in Xavien Howard and Byron Jones. Both are excellent cover guys but X is clearly the playmaker, imposing his will on games so often. It’s not just INT’s, he creates forced fumbles and just has a knack for finding that football. The safeties are quite the trio, and underrated once again comes to mind. Jevon Holland had an excellent rookie season, and SS Brandon Jones seems to be becoming a full time starter and combines great tackling with strong blitzing abilities. Jones had 5 sacks last season and had the 3rd most tackles on the team, behind Wilkins and Baker.

Depth, depth, depth. Sieler, Jenkins, Butler. Ingram, Tindall, Eguavoen and Riley. Needham, Rowe, Igbinoghene. Is it possible we actually see the emergence of former 1st RD pick Noah Igbinoghene? He’s been showing up in camp, and it would be great for the talented young player to finally make it in the NFL. Nik Needham is one of my favorite Dolphins players, a guy who plays above his head all the time, max effort guy who does whatever the coaches ask. We basically brought last year’s defense back intact. We added a nice rookie LB (Channing Tindall) and a nice veteran LB/DE (Melvin Ingram). Once again, this is an ascending unit. If the offense can hold up their end of the bargain, be more balanced and be able to keep opposing defenses on the field longer, just imagine how much better our defense can be? All this remains to be seen, but it’s hard not to be optimistic that it can be so.

I don’t see why anyone should care whether or not someone else had the vaccine or not. They’re vaccinated, good for them. They’re not vaccinated, good for them. It’s called being responsible for yourself and having the freedom to do so. I don’t see why anyone should find it necessary to question someone else’s decision or ridicule them for it. Everyone has their reasons.

What I think we learned from COVID was being more sanitary is a good practice. Let’s be honest, humans are disgusting. We touch doors and handle public products and things, touch our face, some people don’t prepare food in a sanitary manner, we get intimate without washing in the spur of the moment, and all sorts of other habits. When people were wearing masks, gloves, using wipes, washing their hands, sneezing in their elbow and armpits along with social distancing as opposed to just blowing it at everyone, COVID died really fast. It did more than vaccinations. Think about it.

Don’t sleep on Cedric Wilson making an impact on offense this year. He can do what Parker does at a similar size/speed ratio, along with Hill and Waddle flying around. Wilson is about 3 years younger than Parker. Then you have Preston Williams who is a big target and Gesicki with the other TEs. Then we add Ezukanma to the mix. The backs catch passes too.

Tua has a lot of weapons with a running game setting him up. We have more explosive skill players this year, there is no doubt about it.

Several years ago in the playoffs Flacco threw a deep ball, what seemed like a mile high, completed for a td to stun Denver I believe, enroute to an SB championship

Afterwards I started paying attention to that trajecory of sky high dropping into the receivers hands, with less chance of being knocked away

Rodgers also throws that type of deep ball, especially on hail Mary’s, Russell Wilson also, and Tua

Accuracy shouldn’t come as a surprise on Tua’s long passes

One of our Twitterites should go on there and challenge him

I’d really like to see the overhead view of the 70 yard pass Tua threw in OTAs, it’s for sure over 50, the guy had to back up to the back of the endzone to catch it

It really looks like 70 yards

LOL, the twitter guy who said there is no video evidence of Tua throwing 50 yards is a joke account.

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Like all stats they can and will manipulate it

Less than ideal when your offensive line allows 253 pressures — per Pro Football Focus, the most allowed by any front five in the league.”

Do these stats count pressure, only when throwing the ball or does it also count when pressured out of the pocket?

He was really good eluding the rush, so would think it wouldn’t

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I remember a couple of ints against Falcons under pressure, the first one Waddle sat down, then when Tua threw it he moved, on the second one Smythe ran a sloppy route and didn’t go where he was supposed to

These are QB stats, but receivers are part of it

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Again trying to use the stats they want to prove their point

Last season, despite Tagovailoa having the edge in completion percentage (67.6 to 66.3), Mahomes had the edge in accurate throw rate (78.3 to 75.3).

Maybe that’s not what he’s talking about or what he said

“I love the deep ball, but guess what though? I done expanded my game,” Hill added. “So, now I’m doing a lot more than just the deep ball now. I’m doing intermediate routes. I’m doing short routes. So, now I actually need a guy who can just get me the ball now on a dagger route, on a corner route, on a shallow cross route. You know, right now, right in my chest. So, I can do the rest. I make you look good now.”

    He’s talking about ball placement

That’s refreshing because Flores surely didn’t and the team didn’t do a good job showing confidence in him with all the Watson rumors. That’s over now so just let this team go about their business instead of all the predictions and nonsense.

The NFLN just discussed the Tyreek comments on Mahomes/Tua and none of them looked at it like he is talking his QB up. I think that is absolutely what he’s doing. The negative commentary about Tua has been so absurd that Tyreek felt he needed to chime in as a leader and because of his status as a player. I love it!

As many dysfunctional reports we get about this team mainly from Ross and the Flores nonsense, the players truly like each other and push each other. Then the new coaching staff lead by McDaniel have brought a positive vibe to the players and the organization. I truly believe the team is in a place where all the outside noise doesn’t effect them. That also helps Tua who handles this nonsense so well.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You mentioned above it doesn’t matter, if he’s more accurate than Mahomes, I agree

What matters is the sports media either trying to find a fine line between the 2 or agreeing

If Tua is in the conversation with a generation QB like Mahomes, then that in and of itself is a win

Perception can be more important than reality

I think Tua is more accurate, and I think Hill said it, because he hated the showmanship of Mahomes, one video showed him missing a wide open receiver in the EZ, because he threw a no look pass

Mahomes often threw some whackjob pass for some unknown reason, when a basic regular throwing motion would’ve got the job done

His left handed passes, where he had pressure on the right is great, but make them only when warranted

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I hear ya. Mahomes is a playmaking QB with great physical skills. But he has not become a better rhythm QB over the years. He’s an improv guy who does not see the play and constantly runs around but he can do that. It has also cost him some big games in recent years. Running around in the pocket 10, 15 and 20 yards deep is not the objective.

Tyreek Hill was who he is before Mahomes replaced Alex Smith. Let’s see Mahomes without Tyreek. You don’t just replace him with anyone.

  31. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

As for the Sean Payton story and how much money we were willing to offer him, who cares to keep discussing it? He’s a great coach, but he was still Saints property and he stepped down. He wanted a year off. He walked away from $15M per year with two years left on the deal. We would have had to trade top picks to acquire him and may not have had what it takes to acquire Tyreek Hill.

What I do find interesting about it is Frank Smith might have still been our OC under Payton.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As for the positive stories I’m not sure how many there are from the media because I rarely seem them. The only positivity comes from in house.

I don’t care if the media isn’t all in with our team and doesn’t think they’ll be a top team. But the extreme stuff seems totally unwarranted. One guy a few weeks back picked us to finish 5-12. Really? We were 10-6 in 2020 and 9-8 in 2021. With the roster we have now we fall that low?

I will say this, Micah Parsons is exactly who I thought he was. He’s a versatile LB who can play a lot of roles and dominate. We could have chose him at #6 in 2021. We took Waddle instead. Both were really good prospects. I think our defense still has great potential without him. Our offense needed a player like Waddle. Now we added Tyreek Hill with him. That’s a huge jump on offense.

What I think most pundits are missing is our defense. I think Jaelan Phillips is the guy they’re sleeping on besides Jevon Holland. There is a really good solid core on defense that also features one of the best ball hawks in the league in X. This defense is not 7 or 8 deep, they’re like 15 deep. 🙂

And Melvin Ingram bounced around too much to get votes last year.
Jaelan is not really a LB, even though that’s how we list him. He’s really an EDGE rusher, which seems to be gaining acceptance as a new position.
But if Wake and Lawrence Taylor were LBs, even though they did not really “back up the line,” like a MLB or ILB do, then JPhillips is also a LB and should be on this list.

He said the actual videos shots didn’t show much of anything and that with a million cell phone users in the area natural that some come close to multiple ballot boxes.

But that’s just Barr talking. Did you get more out of it?
    ——————
In the meantime, the media is bashing Tua as essentially unwatchable and unworthy… they won’t ‘vet’ him.

So why not watch “2000 Mules” as BBMike has suggested? Do ya believe everything ya hear from the media and political blowhards? You are strong enough to make up your own mind, without hiding behind a Bill Barr… that much I know, man.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was asking BBM about it to decide whether I want to watch about it. Mostly all I know about it is what Barr said and that Fox News and Newsmax wouldn’t run commercials for it. And “hiding behind a Bill Barr”? I offered what he said as a way to talk about it.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yep! We all watched him get groomed from week one to the end of the season. What I like about him is he wasn’t happy with his rookie season. He had a historic season with 8.5 sacks as a rookie being somewhat green. He feels he missed a lot of plays. That’s scary.

Ogbah said he’s bigger, stronger and faster this year and has special upside. Nobody in the media is really talking about him. Lots of draftniks said Phillips was the best pure edge rusher in the 2021 draft. Now it’s year two. In the words of Son, pain is coming from #15 in Miami. 🙂

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Go to :50 and see him take on the tackle than the guard and he still tackles the QB in the backfield. That’s LT type stuff.

  45. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

About those linebacker ratings, are they only considering inside linebackers?
    cuz
I’ve been saying it’s our weak link.
No one will vote for AVG as a top LB, but he will make plays.
same with Jerome Baker. I’ll keep him too.
The new draft pick Tindall will help, but he didn’t play last year in the NFL.
The rest of our guys are backups on every team, even though I like those guys making plays and giving 110% for us. (Roberts, Scarlett, Riley, Eguavoen)

  50. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This is from an article from PFF on 10 NFL Players who struggled as a rookie:

I have my opinions about PFF, but this is just bad

    EDGE JAELAN PHILLIPS, MIAMI DOLPHINS
Phillips was the first pass-rusher selected last season (assuming Micah Parsons was originally intended to be a true off-the-ball linebacker), and he played extensively as a rookie, posting 10 sacks but only managing 39 pressures from 402 pass-rushing snaps while earning a 53.7 overall PFF grade.

His best play came when he was moved around and allowed to exploit more favorable matchups against interior offensive linemen. Phillips flashed playmaking ability, but he was drafted to be a difference-maker on the Miami defensive line, and he hasn’t yet come close to that. He had just one or fewer pressures in nine games as a rookie, which is something that won’t cut it if he wants to be an elite pass-rushing force at the NFL level.

Well PFF, I guess he is worse than even you wrote since he only had 8.5 sacks not 10…..

  51. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

message to all the talking heads freaking out about Tyreek’s podcast

  52. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    also from PFF
X-Factor for 2022: CB Byron Jones

Since signing with Miami two years ago, Jones hasn’t eclipsed a 70.0 coverage grade. While he did force the fourth-most incompletions from man coverage in 2021, he and Xavien Howard each gave up over 400 yards on such plays. Howard was able to offset the yardage allowed with three interceptions en route to a 70.7 man coverage grade, but Jones did not record a single interception on 46 such targets. Instead, he allowed two scores and finished with a sub-par 51.1 man coverage grade, a minuscule improvement on his 50.2 grade from the year pro.

Jones has always been a better zone cornerback, and his past two years with the Dolphins have amplified that notion. He’s recorded his best individual coverage grades playing the scheme and even collected his lone two interceptions as a Miami Dolphin in zone during 2020. Josh Boyce’s return as defensive coordinator also provides some familiarity for the defense despite Brian Flores’ departure as head coach, which could spur Jones to rebound as a consistent boundary cornerback.

  53. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Jaelan got a late start on the field.
He missed reps in Training Camp and preseason games.
He only played in 14 of the 17 games.
He played like a rookie. He WAS a rookie.
He started though, and they depended on him; he’s no where close to a bust.
    PS:
He got run over by a car in college and has been rebuilding his body
(and his whole life, really, as he withdrew from college, withdrew from football, and went into a psych shell in a world of music for a year).
He was 6’5 265 last year with some baby fat.
    This year … look out!!

All media is garbage. Liars and hustlers. They predict things wrong all the time and then act like what truly happens was part of their coverage. Meteorologists get paid to guess too so I guess they have some value? I’d put them slightly above politicians on the value and lies chart and below just about everything else. I’d trust Deshaun Watson with my niece in a bathhouse before I’d trust a journalist to post something that isn’t on the propaganda agenda.

  59. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    I disagree.
Meteorologists now have radar and satellite imagery that have greatly improved their prediction success ratio.
    … …
I do agree that politicians have an agenda.
    They SHOULD have an agenda.
An agenda is the work that needs to get done.
as in “What’s on the agenda today?”
It is supposed to be the agenda that their voters elected them to work on. …
which SHOULD be the business of taking care of and improving life in our country.
However, it seems some of them have sold out to special interest groups.
That is why I would like strict and short term limits.
Hopefully the “lobbyists” can’t afford to bribe a new set of reps every 2 years.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Meteorologists still guess though. It may be a high value guess but still a guess. I never mentioned politician agendas. Their main agenda is getting elected and usually not much else. It’s hard to accomplish goals sometimes but many don’t put much into their work. I agree that most have donor agendas above all else beyond reelection.

My main issue is media propaganda. No one wants to do investigative reporting anymore and it’s very needed. The people who own papers do not want certain info to get out more. Like how wide the wealth gap is today. Propaganda sells, it always has but it leads to a divided and poorly informed populace. Like what we see today.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

  64. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    uh huh

  65. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Something they are not considering or at least haven’t mentioned is more successful offensive plays will lead to more offensive plays per game. If they stop punting 2 out of 3 series they will accrue more plays per game and thus have more balls to go around per game.

    • New Age's avatar New Age says:

Yep. Our offense was anemic and if it improves, those WRs will still see their targets. With accurate Tua, they should reel them in more as well.

  66. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

The Dolphins punted 78 times last season. 4.58 punts per game. If we punted one less time per game we would accrue at least 3-5 more plays per game. That is an additional 50-85 plays per season. That is a LOT of touches to go around.

  67. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Miami had 1.3 punts per offensive score last season. KC had .5 punts per offensive score. Just one more 1st down per game (one less punt) can make a huge difference.

So the latest I’ve heard about Baker Mayfield (and y’all probably have heard it as well), is that the Carolina Panthers are seriously trying to acquire him. The two sides (Browns and Panthers) have yet to come to an agreement for compensation ($$$, trade values, etc).

The way I see it? Baker Mayfield is going to be the starting QB for the Panthers by the time the regular season opens, and Deshaun Watson is going to be suspended for some time. Meaning, Jacoby Brissett is likely to be the opening day starter for the Browns and possibly for the whole season.

The Browns are likely in DEEP POOP.

And I have a gut feeling that Jimmy G will remain a 49er until Trey Lance proves himself. IF Lance proves himself, I see Jimmy G getting moved via trade before the trade deadline of ’22.
