A look at our WR’s

While the running back situation is far from settled as to which RB’s will be getting lots of playing time, touches or carries, the wide receiver situation is quite clear, especially when it comes to the top 3. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson are the top dogs. It’s definitely muddy after that and potentially even more muddy after the Dolphins just signed veteran WR Mohamed Sanu. If I’m going to be honest, I don’t think Sanu makes the 53. We have too much young talent here to displaced by a 33 year old WR. By talent alone, Preston Williams is making this roster, but his health and his body have let him down and he hasn’t been able to stay on the field. Lynn Bowden Jr. offers versatility and may most closely resemble Deebo Samuel in as much as he can carry the ball out of the backfield and play WR as well. Bowden Jr. himself though has had trouble securing a spot on the roster and staying healthy. We drafted WR Erik Ezukanma in RD 4 and I’d expect him to make the roster. Then there are wild cards like Trent Sherfield who at 6’1 219 brings a big, physical presence at WR, and also history playing for the Niners in a similar offense. There’s also speedy WR River Cracraft who also played for the Niners.

Even though he’s classified as a TE, you could easily count TE Mike Gesicki as a WR as he is so often positioned in the slot. That may change though as McD attempts to make Gesicki a more well rounded TE like his former TE George Kittle, one of the leagues best all around TE. Kittle is a great receiver with uncanny run after the catch abilities, but no TE puts forth more effort blocking in the run and passing game as Kittle does. If Gesicki can become half the blocker Kittle is he will be so much better and our team will as well. The numbers at WR will also be affected by how many RB’s we carry, considering we know we will have a FB on our roster. It’s possible we only carry 5 WR’s and if that’s the case, I’d expect it to be Hill, Waddle, Wilson, Williams and Ezukanma. If it’s 6 WR’s, then one of those wild cards, or perhaps the veteran Sanu gets the nod, but to me that’s a long shot.

We haven’t had this much talent at the WR position since we had the Marks Brothers, Duper and Clayton. This truly is the closest as far as speed and talent to that duo. Cedrick Wilson could be our Nat Moore completing the trio. Our talent stretches even further though will potential guys like Williams and Bowden Jr. If Williams can stay healthy, much like his former counterpart DeVante Parker, he can be that big WR that wins those contested 50/50 throws. I think Tua is excellent at placing that ball to make those plays work.

I definitely consider the WR position one of our biggest strengths of the team, along with the defense. While our defense isn’t a star studded affair, it’s very solid and there a few young players on the cusp of stardom. In contrast, the WR corps has the stars right now, as Tyreek Hill is a top 3 WR on most lists and Jaylen Waddle, who is just going into year 2 would probably make top 10 on most lists. Cedrick Wilson may really feast this year if/when opposing defense give extra attention to Hill and Waddle. Like Tim often says, and of course this all dependent upon our O-line being competent, our offense will be difficult to defend. If the running game is working and we’re getting push up front, how do they possibly defend our passing game as long as Tua stays upright with enough time to throw? Pick your poison. This WR unit and our defense are the things that have me most excited. Hill, Waddle, Holland, Phillips, Jones, Baker, Wilkins, Ogbah and many more on that defense. If this WR unit plays as well as we hope, we won’t be worrying about who’s getting the carries in the run game.

Iggy is vegan? That’s gotta be a tough diet for a NFL player.

‘”Igbinoghene said veganism has “completely changed” his life, from the way he practices to the way he plays. Igbinoghene is entering the year at 190 pounds, 7 pounds lighter than he was at 2021’s weigh-in.”
    —————–
At some point in the late ’00s, Ricky became vegan while with us. I want to say it was ’08 or ’09 (don’t exactly recall which year at the moment), but he said it added extra years to his career… and it truly showed! Leaner, faster, no more processed meat coupled with harmful growth hormones, and less sluggish.

Hope it works out for Iggy, too. I’m really rooting for Iggy!

It seems surreal to be this positive, but with the guys we have … I mean you can’t expect the record setting Waddle to play badly, you can’t expect the most accurate passer in NCAA history to not hit guys in stride, you can’t expect multiple all pros like Ingram, Armstead, and Hill to not play well, you can’t expect the guy X with most INTs in the league during his career to not play well.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Right with you. Many have said it in past years mixed with hope and prayers. I will say it this year without that, “this offseason and TC feels different” and I mean in a very positive way. I’m stoked!!

Ross and Grier moved on from Flores because of a lot of reasons we’ve all discussed. The biggest flaw with Flores was on offense. No vision changing his OC and OL coaches all 3 years.

Mike McDaniel was hired to correct that and he’s more than just an offensive coach. He sees the game as a whole. I think Flores was too involved with the defense.

McDaniel has a philosophy and vision on offense that he was groomed in and it has won quite a bit. He was smart enough to keep the evolving defense in tact. He respects what they can do and he faced it and didn’t like it. He’s made that clear.

Play fast seems to be his message. 🙂

Good thing that lunatic didn’t have a more powerful weapon or more people would have died and been injured.

Ha ha ha that is so funny. Only one person died ha ha ha good thing it wasn’t a high-capacity knife ha ha ha

Disdaining part of the solution while being 100% responsible for blocking any part of the solution should not be something to gloat about.

Which party is responsible for blocking, attempting to block out trying to repeal any meaningful healthcare bill that would pay for all of this mental health care you would advocate for over sensible gun restrictions?

    “Hmmmmm”

Which group will say that free “adults” (18 – 21) should not be allowed to smoke pot or drink alcohol because their brains are not developed enough to handle it yet but will also defend with my life their “rights” to be able to slaughter others at a rate of 20 to one advantage?

The same folks that will abridge someone else’s right to free speech (you can’t threaten a Supreme Court judge, you can’t yell bomb on an airplane) or their right to the pursuit of happiness (with morality laws that define marriage as between a man and a woman) are fine with “ suitable abridgment” of those constitutional rights but lose all ability to think and return to their tribal corners it there is any discussion of sensible

But look over there! look over there! what about that? what about that!?

    cHicAgo!

Taking away guns is not going to solve the problem by itself . Universal medical healthcare is not going to solve the problem by itself. Providing for social / economical safety nets is not going to solve the problem. Red flag laws will not solve the problem by itself. ALL of these ideas come with there own potential problems but we can weed through them to come up with a SOMETHING that will substantially reduce the out of control amount of violence we are seeing.

The republicans should grab the bull by the horns and craft a bill that combines sensible portions of the solutions above and pass it. They are the only ones who can do it. Just take it right out of the Democrats hands and fix the fucking problem.

They will get the votes they need from the other side, while controlling the entire narrative. They are the only ones with the power to do so because they block any any any any any other attempt to do so.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Rock
      This is extremely well written.
Is murder by whatever means a mental health problem?
Doing drugs to the point of becoming a homeless addict is also a mental health problem,
and therefore there are laws BANNING recreational drugs
and a huge agency to enforce them.
Either you are in favor of Federal bans against problem “things” (drugs and guns)
      or you are not.
Or maybe there is a sensible middle ground.
Gun ownership has an upside. (self defense)
Drug usage has an upside. (surgical, dental, and other medical pain relief)
So a complete ban on either one is not desirable.
      However …
We have a drug problem in America.
      and
We have a gun problem in the US.
We don’t need to shut down Publix pharmacies
      or
go house to house and take guns from “respectable” people,
but we need to do SOMETHING to reduce the size of both problems.
Lots of people die from car crashes, but no one wants to ban cars.
But it is sensible and helps solve the problem to put in seat belts and air bags and to require certain age and skill qualifications to get a car and or a driver license. etc.

Communism is an economic system that was tried in a small bunch of mostly East European and Asian countries after WW1 as an attempt to distribute wealth to the people who were actually doing the work instead of “aristocrats” who inherited all of a country’s money at birth.
This system failed and is generally considered not a viable technique for running an economy.
Communism was so bad at achieving its goals that it required totalitarian government dictators to remain in power.
Communism should be refuted and defeated wherever it is attempted.

I can’t fathom why we can’t have tougher gun laws. There’s no reason why it shouldn’t take 3-6 months to get a gun, provided you pass all the necessary checks, and in my mind, that would include social media checks. It shouldn’t be a same day exchange, that seems ridiculously irresponsible to me. I’m all for deeper checks, longer wait times. I also still believe that if some person has truly nefarious ideas to do something, they will find a way to do it. Of course, the system doesn’t need to help them by allowing people to get guns in one day, especially a new gun owner. If you already have purchased firearms, the wait time should be much shorter. New gun owners should definitely have to go through a lengthy process in my opinion.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Just a random thought, a uniform training course on weapon safety and use to bring all cuurent gun owners on one standard and the psychological testing to assess your mental health/capacity to see if you might be considered at risk with your artillery….

New gun owners will need to take the full gun training courses, both physical (safety and usage) and mental health evaluations over a few months, maybe 6.

…..lol…I know, dumb idea even though addresses both sides of this equation, imo. Seems sensible to me, anyway…when I heard about this in CR, I was like…duh.

Krishna – Safety training makes sense to me. It’s a lethal weapon that unlike a knife, you can kill someone accidentally from a good distance. Can’t see any harm in having law enforcement show a new gun owner how a gun should be held, loaded, and fired properly. Not necessarily target training but the correct way to hold and fire a gun.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

But none of that stops an unhinged individual from shooting at innocent people. It’s not about gun safety, it’s about evil intentions.

Of course not. Neither of us are saying that though. Just think it would be a good idea that a new owner of a gun should know how to load it, hold it, and fire it safely. That has nothing to do with any of these mass shootings at all.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

  43. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Tim – We were talking about gun laws, having much deeper looks into new people buying guns, having them wait much longer than it is currently. In some states you can buy and receive your gun the very same day. I think it should be at least 3-6 months, allowing them to look deep into social media history to see what type of person you are and if there are any red flags that might come up. Then in hand with all that, once a new gun owner receivers their gun, the safety training i just mentioned.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The first things you mentioned I agree with, I don’t know why anyone would not be for that. I also think the age should be 21, even if that won’t prevent all shootings. The safety training doesn’t do anything. That’s just common sense for law abiding citizens who want to own guns and not have accidents.

I hope we beat the stealers* by 30.

Lol, we played the Steelers on Monday night back in the 70s at the OB, we lead 30-0, then needed Seiple to step out of the back of the EZ to take a safety to make it 30-26, 2 pts that meant nothing, and final score

Brilliant call by Shula, as Seiple then punted the ball on the free kick 80 yards

    — Terron Armstead making clear who is the leader of the OL.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It used to be Jesse Davis as the vet though he was not a top tier player. Now there is a legitimate top tier player in Armstead to help lead the group. Even if he does get injured and misses some games, I think his presence is different than what we’ve had in the past. Conner Williams also has more starts and experience than the other young OL on the team. We needed to add those two guys to this mostly young group.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The only thing Jesse Davis could lead is a sieve

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The fact that we had to start him at almost every position which seemed like ever year he was here, proved to be why our OL has not been very good. As an in-game versatile backup he was serviceable. But he was a low tier starter. When opponents knew he was starting, they targeted him in their game plan.

It would good if another tackle stepped up as backup LT but I get it with the top 5. Maybe Eichenberg is the best 2nd option. The scheme is different on offense so as fans we all have to see what it looks like.

We didn’t sign him for 2 years $6.5M coming off of a season ending knee injury to take a look if we want to employ a FB in the offense. LOL

Mike McDaniel has made it pretty clear that he believes in the FB position.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Durham Smythe will likely play some FB/H-back in our scheme as well as TE.

There is no way we’re not running the ball under HC and play-caller Mike McDaniel.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Personally and personnel-wise, I’ve always liked employing a FB. Back in my Madden days, I was always sure to get one of the best run-blocking FBs around (Dan Kreider was always a pick-up of mine in later rounds)… almost like a 6th O-Lineman. I miss the days of Reagan Maui’a and Lousaka Polite.

I’d oftentimes even double-down with one of the best run-blocking TEs in the game to make my goal-line sits impossible to defend against (Mark Bruener comes to mind).

This Offense of ours is going to ROCK this season!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Oh yeah… and to triple-up, I’d often times draft one of the better run-blocking WRs in the game to make outside runs that more effective. Yeah, that WR might not be able to catch for shit, but he’d seal off blockers for my speed-demon running back (Trung Candidate comes to mind).

Zach Sieler had one of the most dominant practices I’ve seen yet. One on ones, team, run, pass, it didn’t matter. Wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the orange tomorrow.

More coming your way on the training camp notebook and Drive Time podcast later today.

  66. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

STARS OF THE DAY ▪ Rookie Erik Ezukanma. He and Braylon Sanders have been the best of the receivers competing for the No. 4 job, and he caught a 40-yard TD from Tua Tagovailoa.

    ▪ Tagovailoa. He had another good day, delivering a 45-yard TD pass to Tyreek Hill on a crossing route, as well as the aforementioned long TD pass to Ezukanma and a 35-yard TD pass to Jaylen Waddle over the middle. All three of those plays involved some run after the catch. He overthrew two passes to begin practice and threw an interception later in practice to Trill Williams; it was unclear if Williams caught it in bounds.

    Tagovailoa was very sharp otherwise.

He also had a 10-yard TD pass to Cethan Carter and a 5-yard TD throw to Chase Edmonds.
    ▪ Linebackers Duke Riley and Sam Eguavoen. Riley – Miami’s No. 3 linebacker – continued an excellent training camp by knocking away Skylar Thompson’s pass to Hunter Long in the end zone. Eguavoen had a good play in pass coverage and flushed Tagovailoa from the pocket on a one passing attempt, forcing him to throw it away.

    ▪ Thompson, given more opportunity in Bridgewater’s absence, acquitted himself well, delivering short TD passes to Tyreek Hill and Trent Sherfield in red zone drills and then throwing a strike over the middle to Jaylen Waddle for a TD, followed up by a 20-yard completion to Sherfield. He threw a short TD pass to rookie tight end Tanner Connor.

    ▪ Cornerback Trill Williams, who had the impressive interception.

PLAYS OF THE DAY ▪ Tagovailoa evaded pressure to deliver the 40-yard pass over the middle to Ezukanma for that 40-yard TD, beating Brandon Jones. It was a difficult thorw, because Tagovailoa was on the run.

    ▪ On the aforementioned Hill TD pass over the middle, Nik Needham was beaten and Jevon Holland couldn’t come over quickly enough.
    ▪ Calvin Munson blew up a running play to ZaQuadre White. ▪ Williams had a one-handed interception in the corner of the end zone, on a fade. That was Tagovailoa’s only pick of the day.

With the reports of Iggy stepping up his game and Trill Williams looking like a real NFL defensive back I am starting to feel a little better about our depth at CB. That is way worse than what Deshaun is accused of.
He was not ever accused of actual intercourse, just a shockingly adolescent level of fascination with his own dong.
Since most people, according to my research, receive massages in the nude nowadays, his being naked in front of these massage professionals is a non-issue.
He is accused of flipping over to display himself while not covered by the usual “sheet-cloth,” and standing up at the end really close to the masseuses, and asking for “favors” beyond the science of massage.

The Watson decision was made by an arbitration judge. The NFL and Watson’s team both presented their cases to the arbitrator. The NFL wanted an indefinite suspension, but it wasn’t their decision, it was the arbitrator.

If the judge handed down a decision that said Watson did NOT violate the conduct policy and gave no suspension, then that would have been the end. The NFL would not have been able to appeal the decision.

Since the arbitrator decided Watson did violate the policy and handed down a suspension, the NFL can appeal the 6 game suspension, and in that case, it would be Goodell that hears that appeal. At that point, Goodell can decide what the suspension is. (This is why the NFLPA tried to force the NFL’s hand before the decision came out by publicly announcing THEY wouldn’t appeal the decision and tried to get the NFL to publicly announce they would abide by it as well.)

If the NFL appeals and Goodell hands out a stiffer sentence, I don’t know what options the NFLPA or Watson’s team has next (can they take it another court, etc?)
