A look at our WR’s

While the running back situation is far from settled as to which RB’s will be getting lots of playing time, touches or carries, the wide receiver situation is quite clear, especially when it comes to the top 3. Tyreek Hill, Jaylen Waddle and Cedrick Wilson are the top dogs. It’s definitely muddy after that and potentially even more muddy after the Dolphins just signed veteran WR Mohamed Sanu. If I’m going to be honest, I don’t think Sanu makes the 53. We have too much young talent here to displaced by a 33 year old WR. By talent alone, Preston Williams is making this roster, but his health and his body have let him down and he hasn’t been able to stay on the field. Lynn Bowden Jr. offers versatility and may most closely resemble Deebo Samuel in as much as he can carry the ball out of the backfield and play WR as well. Bowden Jr. himself though has had trouble securing a spot on the roster and staying healthy. We drafted WR Erik Ezukanma in RD 4 and I’d expect him to make the roster. Then there are wild cards like Trent Sherfield who at 6’1 219 brings a big, physical presence at WR, and also history playing for the Niners in a similar offense. There’s also speedy WR River Cracraft who also played for the Niners.

Even though he’s classified as a TE, you could easily count TE Mike Gesicki as a WR as he is so often positioned in the slot. That may change though as McD attempts to make Gesicki a more well rounded TE like his former TE George Kittle, one of the leagues best all around TE. Kittle is a great receiver with uncanny run after the catch abilities, but no TE puts forth more effort blocking in the run and passing game as Kittle does. If Gesicki can become half the blocker Kittle is he will be so much better and our team will as well. The numbers at WR will also be affected by how many RB’s we carry, considering we know we will have a FB on our roster. It’s possible we only carry 5 WR’s and if that’s the case, I’d expect it to be Hill, Waddle, Wilson, Williams and Ezukanma. If it’s 6 WR’s, then one of those wild cards, or perhaps the veteran Sanu gets the nod, but to me that’s a long shot.

We haven’t had this much talent at the WR position since we had the Marks Brothers, Duper and Clayton. This truly is the closest as far as speed and talent to that duo. Cedrick Wilson could be our Nat Moore completing the trio. Our talent stretches even further though will potential guys like Williams and Bowden Jr. If Williams can stay healthy, much like his former counterpart DeVante Parker, he can be that big WR that wins those contested 50/50 throws. I think Tua is excellent at placing that ball to make those plays work.

I definitely consider the WR position one of our biggest strengths of the team, along with the defense. While our defense isn’t a star studded affair, it’s very solid and there a few young players on the cusp of stardom. In contrast, the WR corps has the stars right now, as Tyreek Hill is a top 3 WR on most lists and Jaylen Waddle, who is just going into year 2 would probably make top 10 on most lists. Cedrick Wilson may really feast this year if/when opposing defense give extra attention to Hill and Waddle. Like Tim often says, and of course this all dependent upon our O-line being competent, our offense will be difficult to defend. If the running game is working and we’re getting push up front, how do they possibly defend our passing game as long as Tua stays upright with enough time to throw? Pick your poison. This WR unit and our defense are the things that have me most excited. Hill, Waddle, Holland, Phillips, Jones, Baker, Wilkins, Ogbah and many more on that defense. If this WR unit plays as well as we hope, we won’t be worrying about who’s getting the carries in the run game.

“Tagovailoa scrambled into the end zone from about 10 yards out.”

If he’s wearing a red no contact jersey and there is no tackling anyhow….. exactly how does that work? We going two hand touch?

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

It could have just be a clean run, it happens.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

It does, but was more interested in the Camp rules in general on such. Obviously if no one is going to tackle Tua he can hit the endzone any time he wants.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think you’re over thinking it. Everyone knows if the play was there. All the defender has to do is show that the play most likely would have ended here and not in the end zone.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

Cool. Just didn’t know how it worked, which I take is an honor system thing. Had never read about the way it goes down before.

“I think that’s a dangerous team. The Dolphins, that’s a dynamic group. You hate to say it’s all on the quarterback, but it kinda feels that way. They’re gonna be solid in just every department, and it’s a matter of whether or not Tua can elevate. If he can elevate, this is another team that’s got double-digit win potential because they’re as explosive as any team in the league right now.”

    Stanger,
concerning Tua running it in, why could he not just run every play in, even from 50 yds out ?
this is what I was asking you yesterday … how is it clear any play is “over”?
What does “tag off” mean is happening to signal a play has ended?

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Stanger, there are plays where the WR might have been blown up but all the DB does in TC is make soft contact and say you’re done, I could have lit you up. The same with a RB hitting the hole, everyone saw the LB had a chance to blow it up. Or it would have likely been a sack on the QB. The coaches know who won the play and which side has to do better next time.

  6. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Guys, yes, Tag off means to tag the guy. You can tell if it would have been a tackle. They aren’t allowing tackle to the ground yet this season. Tomorrow pads come on and maybe Steve will give us some updates from open camp!

Braylon Sanders Averaged 21.1 yards per catch for his career. That’s over several years, not one game or even a freakish season.

What if we average over 30 points a game like Dallas and Tampa Bay did last year?
    They were #1 and #2.
We were #22 at 20 points per game.
Even the patriots had 27 ppg.
And The Miami Dolphins swept the NE team last year.
But they scored 24 pass and 24 rush TDs.
    We got 12 rushing.

  12. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – If we average over 30 points per game we’re going to be a legitimate contender this season. Our defense should be even better, so if that happens on offense, look out!

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We’d only need one more TD and a FG over what we did last year.
Doesn’t it seem like having a better OL, better RBs, Tyreek, and McDaniel taken all together could equal one more TD and a FG per game?

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Yes and no. New offense, a lot of new coaches and a brand new playbook. Sean McVay got that Rams offense humming his first season to 30PPG (29.9 to be exact). I’m thinking if McD can duplicate that he will be close to the top of COTY and the Dolphins could be SB contenders.

First, if he’s struggling to get an opportunity, it means our WR corp is significantly upgraded, which we knew, but this means it’s showing during practice.

Second, I’ve been waiting for an unhappy shoe to drop. It’s been all roses so far, which, in this business it’s unrealistic to think it would go on forever. This is mild disgruntlement; I’m curious to see how it’s handled.

The NFL did not find evidence to support Brian Flores’ tanking allegation. Instead, the league unleashes major discipline for tampering with Tom Brady and Sean Payton.

So they found no evidence of Flores’ allegations, which bodes well for us with his lawsuit, but good lord did Ross really screw the team over. We should feel lucky we’re only losing a first and a third…

“The investigators found tampering violations of unprecedented scope and severity,” Commissioner Goodell said. “I know of no prior instance of a team violating the prohibition on tampering with both a head coach and a star player, to the potential detriment of multiple clubs, over a period of several years. Similarly, I know of no prior instance in which ownership was so directly involved in the violations.”

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I guess the good thing is, this kind of proves Flores didn’t get fired because of race, but because the team was setting up a major coup which backfired…

Ross needs to step the f^ck back and let his GM handle ALL personnel stuff. It has been a disaster in trying to woo these big names going all the way back to Harbaugh and Fischer. It’s never worked out and we always come away with egg on our faces, but this time it cost us some major picks.

The more I think about this and how important it is teams don’t tamper, the happier I am it’s just a 1st and 3rd- not even in the same year. If this was the Pets, I’d be screaming that Goodell let them off light.
