In retrospect, it really rubs me the wrong way that our Offensive game plan against the Stealers* was for Tua to get rid of the ball ASAP… as in under 1.5 seconds fast.

Know what that tells me? We have NO FAITH in our O-Line to protect him, advertising a weakness to the opposing team. So even before halftime, the Stealers* were protecting the middle of field, keeping our passing game honest.

See, in order to deliver a bomb, Tua would need +2.5 seconds of protection to get it off… I think we tried that one time all game and went incomplete.

Our O-Line MUST get better at pass-pro, and fast. Seems our O-Line is finally coming together as a unit in terms of run-blocking, and Raheem Mostert is making the most out of it.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s the passing game we want to run, quick passes to get YAC. You take your shots deep when you feel the time has presented itself. I saw Tua have time to survey the field for potential big plays. Maybe they just weren’t there. We allowed no sacks and had no turnovers. Even in a blah low scoring game which it was against the Steelers, you win that game most of the time winning the TO battle 3-0.

Those of us who play FF know that the NFL has been low scoring thus far. FF leagues are below the normal scoring. It’s a reflection of the NFL games. Only a handful of teams and players are scoring a good amount of points consistently.

Thing about Eich is that he only played Tackle in college and almost all of his rookie year, so maybe the coaches think he is learning to play OG as fast as a guy can.

“After redshirting his first year at Notre Dame in 2016, Eichenberg played in five games as a backup in 2017. He took over as the starting left tackle in 2018 and started every game for them until 2020.” — Wikipedia

He didn’t allow a single sack his last two years in college. (actually his last 30 games)

He’s 6’6 310, which is a prototypical Tackle body, not guard. But we want very quick guards, so that should be good.

Those last 2 games were on the road. They are much better than their record shows.

They throw to their TE’s/RB’s a lot and run the ball at least 22 times a game. They probably end up with 75% of their touches.

The fact that voting in 2022 is still difficult for some people and considered corrupt by others tells you all you need to know about politicians and their hardcore supporters. Neither side can handle losing.

Voting should be really easy with the technology we have today. People do banking, investments, purchase goods, order food, get deliveries and communicate business with the use of a phone. But we still have trouble voting. If that’s not a red flag I don’t know what is.

Bonjour Alain! I need your opinion on Liam Eichenberg. Do you see any improvement in his game, especially in pass-blocking abilities? Can he be a long-term solution? What do you think about Austin Jackson back at guard when healthy (Shell keeping RT spot)?

Bonjour, from what I saw, Eichenberg did have a good game against Pittsburgh if you take away the two false starts. The issues I’ve seen with him in pass blocking have come when he’s been too slow to switch off to stop a twist on the defensive front, which is more mental than physical. That gives me hope that he can be a long-term solution, though the jury clearly is still out. I don’t mind the idea of moving Jackson back to guard, though I kind of liked what I saw from him at right tackle. I would keep Shell in the starting lineup at this time, though.

  22. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Firstly, gr8 job covering this team so thoroughly & this mailbag segment. Why is Jaelan Phillips, who has such a great motor and is getting in rhythm as a pass rusher, sent out in coverage so often? I get doing it on occasion to confound the opponent but it happened a lot Sunday.

Hey Sean, first off, thanks for the kind words. And I’m with you on Phillips. I understand a lot of what the Dolphins like to do on defense is based on deception and disguising what certain players will do on certain downs, but generating a consistent pass rush has been an issue for this team and at some point I think it would behoove them to just tell Phillips to focus on getting the quarterback and letting him loose full time.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I’m sure we’d all like to see Phillips rush the QB more, but what does that entail?

Because the physical nature isn’t in play so much, when he drops into coverage, I think it allows him to be on the field more

He’s been making plays sideline to sideline, he needs to be on the field as much as possible

I like how they’re playing him now

  23. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Someone took pics of the Fest players this year. Will that be shared?

  24. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Not having a legit punt returner feels like it’s going to cost us. Am I overstating its importance?

Hey Sal, yeah, that’s a good question, but I’m tempted to think it’s not that big of an issue because there just aren’t very many long returns around the league. On the flip side, the Dolphins are still at a stage where their margin for error is small enough that one long return could make a difference. So … yes and no. How’s that for a decisive answer! LOL.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think teams are going to figure it out, when we have a stiff like Wilson back there and are going to start kicking more for distance, than hang time

  25. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Phillips cracked before the season that he wasn’t a fan of Pro Football Focus because it rated him poorly last season — 93rd of 113 qualifying edge players. That was primarily because of his run defense, which the website rated 102nd.

But Phillips’ run defense is much improved; PFF rates him 38th among 112 edge players as a run defender.

He had a team leading seven quarterback pressures against Pittsburgh and was on the field for 26 of the Dolphins’ 30 fourth-quarter defensive snaps.

Per PFF’s Ryan Smith, his 90.1 overall grade during the past four weeks trails only Myles Garrett at the edge defender position.

    —————
When he was at OT he lacked the speed to keep up with edge rushers. Now that he has moved inside he has been exposed for lacking strength to take on the DT. He is getting overpowered at the point of attack. He lacks the necessary athleticism to play at this level

Honestly I think the criticism he’s faced is a little over the top

He’s playing a new position – being in between Armstead and Williams is going to help him develop

And more than anything else that needs to change about Dolphin culture – we need to develop players instead of getting frustrated with them all the time

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Question is where do you develop them?

In practice, in camp, in games or some combination

Then what do you suggest after the season has started, when there’s not much development practice

And what do you do with a development type player in season, who is struggling and a better option may be available on the bench

At the stadium, people around us were gasping or groaning at Ced Wilson fielding punts. Several of them he caught in very contorted postures, and fans were complaining that he “doesn’t want to run any back.” IOW taking fair catches every time.

He must’ve thought that too or been told that on the sideline, because he did try to run back the last one (I think) and that was the worst one to do, and he only got like one yard.

They are definitely searching for someone to give us come juice back there, without risking a star.

Might be another reason why they signed Jamal Perry. I think he can return punts.

We did sign one to the PS. WR Calvin Jackson. He was an UDFA. We wanted to sign him as an UDFA but he signed with the Jets. I guess we had too much WR competition. ———————–
Didn’t know Armstead blocks everyone on that side of the defense. If you watched that Mostert video, Armstead takes his guy out. Eich is left with the difficult job of turning the DT inside or out. That is a tough task vs DT like Heyward and he did it well.

On most of Mostert’s runs of 7,8,9 yards, it was blocks by Eich that made it possible.

    • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I’ve seen some one mentioned that Hunt whiffed a bit on his block

And Hunt didn’t but that penetration doesn’t make a difference if Edmunds aggressively goes outside

And what he does instead on the play is he cuts inside immediately and cuts right into Hunts man – Edmunds is basically dancing/cutting behind the LOS when a back with good vision would be hitting the obvious opening – which is the way the play is designed.

  44. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

That Edmunds mistake still doesn’t resolve 2 issues that are in MM IMO

    1. Take the 3 points up by 6 in that kind of game
    2. If you a going to go for it – keep it in Tua’s hands- you gave the ball to the most disappointing me ever of our offense this season on the most important play!

I tend to think we might need Cedric Wilson at some point this season and we might appreciate him even though he’s basically doing nothing

  47. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

MM is on record telling people that the choice to go for it on 4th is based on analytics

Maybe I’m oversimplifying but I think the idea is the value of scoring 7 in terms of likelihood to win is much greater than the value of scoring 2 which generally doesn’t make a huge difference at that point of the game

But I see that as the fake with analytics and relying on it too much

What analytics doesn’t factor in is how the other side is calling their game

The Steelers were calling a very conservative game plan for their rookie QB. They were throwing deep 1 towards the end of the game, they started to push downfield and he threw 2 interceptions

So if you go up by 9 at that point, you put that pressure on Pickett a little earlier – he pushes and he’s out of his comfort zone.

We probably intercept him in the 3rd qtr and next thing you know 19-10 becomes 26-10 or 22-10

Analytics really doesn’t factor in what the other team is doing. It would have been an asset for the Dolphins to get the Steelers out of their comfort zone mad make them push the ball downfield a little earlier

That said – I’m a huge MM guy. I love that he utilizes analytics. But experience matters – and IMO Tomlin outcoached him by a large margin last Sunday

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He said he made the decision to go for it despite the analytics

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        That would be worse

But that’s not what he said in the postgame presser – here’s the transcript / specifically he didn’t his decision was in spite of analytics

        https://www.miamidolphins.com/news/transcript-mike-mcdaniel-s-media-availability-october-23

He says the people advising him on analytics didn’t advise him to go for it, so to that extent I think you are right but that’s not the sum of it – he’s still making a decision on analytics if you read the substance of the quote

He’s basically deciding that he wasn’t to go up by 2 TDs instead of 2 scores, the belief in the benefit of that is based on the likelihood of winning based on the scoring difference – at the end of the day, if he’s saying they have to score 2 TDs instead of they have to score twice, he’s talking about a 5 point difference which reeks of analytics IMO

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Well I paraphrased but I remember something along the lines that he was not necessarily following the analytics. I like you think it was a mistake to pass up FG

      • The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

        It’s kind of mental masterbation

        And I’m splitting hairs

Technically my argument to go up 9 is an analytics argument – I just thing wanting to go up by 14 is an extra layer of analytics

I’m just referring to the 4th down play – I barely watched the 3rd down play

Edmunds is demonstrating really bad vision on 4th down – he changed direction to run into the worst spot he can run into

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I don’t disagree and on my first look I was really disappointed. 2nd look with this view is not quite as bad but still wish Edmonds had the vision to bounce outside

Amazing how at a critical time this could happen, anything other than giving it to Edmonds would’ve worked

FG, Throw, Mostert in the game

Just goes to show you how important confidence is

Edmonds confidence must be at -1000 about now

Edmunds literally makes the worst decision he can make, other than just flat out running the opposite direction

  51. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I was watching on Sunday and it was pretty clear to me that it was Armstead who was making it possible for Mostert on the left side. Even the announcers made a special point of highlighting that
    ——————
Then you didn’t watch the video I posted. One of the announcers gave props to Eich on one of his blocks as well.

Watch that 4th down video Wyoming posted at 1:51. Armstead’s man pass rushes, he chases/pushes him into the backfield and out of the play. Eich sealed off the entire left side of the defense creating the gaping hole to the left and Edmonds decided to force it up the middle.

On many of the successful runs to the left, Eich helps seal off the DT, passes him to the Center, Williams, then moves to the second level.

I am not saying he is good. I am saying he is average and improving. He does struggle and whiff on the second level a little. To me, that is where he struggles the most.

You act as if he doesn’t even belong on the 53.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

If he is average why is he rated as the 2nd lowest OG in all of football? He was at the bottom of OTs. I am sure there are plays like the ones posted above he has looked good but the vast majority of them he is trash.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

And yes I do believe he doesn’t belong on the 53

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Well, I don’t agree, and the coaches seem to think he is our best option, but, honestly, you know more than I do about OL play. So, there’s that.

We will just hope he gets better as the season rolls on.

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

On the 4th down Play Eichenberg and Williams double the DT, Eichenberg is really just standing there, because the play doesn’t go outside, but there is an LB spying a run outside, so I wouldn’t say running outside was a guaranteed 1st, but it was the way to go

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Steve is right. There is a LB who just stands there behind the DL and never engages. He was ready to tackle Chase if the play went outside Eich’s left.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But Eich was unengaged and in position to block the LB. At a minimum Edmonds had the 1st and most likely a TD

  53. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

If you want to block for Eich, you are facing one scary pass rusher.

  54. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Eich is only going to get better and the only way that happens is through game experience. He’s got the mental capacity and the physical capacity, and it’s now about putting it all together at his new LG position.

As I stated yesterday, YES, he’s let me down. But I’m sure as hell not giving up on him too/so early.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

No he is not . He has shown zero improvement. He was older than the average rookie and I don’t think he has the athletic talent. I don’t get everyone’s love affair for a guy who continually ranks near the bottom of his respective positions and has shown zero improvement

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

That’s your opinion, which I respect. However, I don’t agree. As for PFF? Like I stated yesterday, they’ve really fallen with their assessments.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Keep in mind what Eich was going through last year with our mess of O-Line coaching. They threw him around at LT, RT, and some G duties. He wasn’t able to master a position, and he was a mere rook.

It’s a new day now, with essentially 3 masters of O-Line coaching, outside ZBS. Eich is used to LT in such a scheme… he learning a new position (LG) right now.

I think all will turn out well in the end.

  55. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I see the LB on that play spying

But that’s not an easy Play for the LB to make

I probably be more pissed if chase goes outside and can’t beat that LB to the edge….lol

    • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Eich would have engaged that linebacker if Edmonds took it outside instead of running up Hunts ass. I also agree that he would have beaten the lb around the corner even without a block it was pretty wide open outside. That’s on Edmonds bad.

I have a client that wants to add connecting doors between his hotel rooms in a 10 story building. The walls that he wants to cut through to install the doors or 8 inch thick solid concrete walls with rebar in a mat both ways. They are referred to as Shear walls in construction and they provide stabilization to the building so that it will not twist in high winds. Each opening is about a yard of concrete so the removal will weigh about 4,000 lbs per room. His elevators are three sided glass elevators and have a rating of 2500 pounds. There is no place to put a trash chute so everything will have to be carried down the stairs. 16,000 pounds from the 10th floor 16,000 pounds from the ninth floor 16,000 pounds from the eighth floor you get the idea.

He is complaining about the price and he’s threatening to get somebody else to do it.

I told him he doesn’t understand the process and he is free to please please please go check my price have a good day.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Boss yelled at me for my attitude but fuck it is a pain in the ass job. My estimate came up to $700,000 to install 64 double doors. (34 pair) it is extremely expensive but it is the design and not my pricing that is out of whack. He says I only have $200,000 to do the entire project.

I said great that will buy you the doors frames and hardware with half the installation. He said what about the other half? I said it would cost the same as the first half, Duh. He didn’t like that and complained to my boss and told my boss that I told him to take his business elsewhere.

PFF rates Conner Williams as the 5th best center and Robert Hunt as the 7th best RG this year. That somewhat makes up for Liam Eichenberg being considered the worst LG. LOL

  63. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Son, adding the 34 openings into the sheer walls would PROBABLY not create a structural failure, but tell that to the folks at that Tower in Miami.

There is a whole other structural reinforcement detail of sandwiching C channel on both sides of the wall and bridging the width of the door with another welded to the verticals. The detail shows a staggered pattern in the 12″ wide 1/2″ thick steel plates with 3 3/4 deep webs. The way the engineer wrote it up we need to drill 21 holes through the wall and bolt the steel and THEN cut out the wall inside the frame by drilling bigger holes (6″ rather than the 1 1/4 for the bolts) and then cut between the core holes. Can’t just cut the wall because the overcut of the round blade when it “reaches” through the wall will also cut the concrete floor / ceiling and the slabs are post tensioned concrete (explosive potentially deadly release of stress if cut) and every one is going to take FOREVER and take way more men than it should if they had a service elevator. After running down this and 100 other things with the guy I said “that’s probably why you don’t have them already in this building….(how expensive it will be to do it)
