    7. Miami Dolphins (5-3)

    Week 8 ranking: 10

    Reason for optimism: Tua Tagovailoa

It is amazing to think that one year ago, the conversation surrounding Tagovailoa focused on whether the Dolphins would trade for another quarterback. In his third season, he has made those arguments look silly. He leads the NFL in quarterback rating and ranks third in completion percentage, fourth in touchdown-to-interception ratio and seventh in passing touchdowns despite missing two full games. Miami’s offense ranks sixth in the NFL in yards per game, due in large part to the play of its quarterback. — Marcel Louis-Jacques

M13, yards are yards, I don’t care what the RBs look like. I think Mostert and Wilson gives us a 1a. and 1b. attack.

Anyone else curious about what Myles Gaskin has done to get sidelined?

  5. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Remember that the Shanahan’s used to roll with a BIG back like a Terrell Davis or a Carlos Hyde in more recent years.

Wilson isn’t even close to a POWER BACK like the aforementioned.

Perhaps Coach McDaniel doesn’t believe in POWER BACKS. I find it interesting…

  6. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I like that we have a guy we can turn to if Mostert gets banged up. I wasn’t happy with Edmonds, and I never felt Gaskin or Ahmed were anything but depth guys that you don’t want to have to count on

  7. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Myles Gaskin might be the most unsung Offensive player we have on the roster right now.

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Another thing I was trying to post earlier is we didn’t make this trade for Chubb without a long-term deal involved. The trade wouldn’t have been made if the agent said he’s not willing to sign long-term.

  9. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I have always Gaskin’s best role would be that of a 3rd down back

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Not if he’s not better at it than Mostert, which I don’t believe he is

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Well I didn’t say he was the best 3rd down back on the roster 😉 just that it is his best role

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I actually think he has better receiving skills. Gaskin has really good hands and I have seen him go up and get some balls. But Mostert has that speed and better size

  10. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can’t wait to yell out “CHUBB!!” this Sunday. You could even say I am really very excited about it…

  11. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

I think Gaskin doesn’t really offer enough explosion to be on the field
He’s a solid back who always seems to pick up positive yards but I think his place in down deep on the depths chart these days

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I think the biggest problem I had with Gaskin is he never got yards after contact. If he hit the hole and got a couple he was down as soon as he got hit

  12. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I feel like the big power back and a pure 3rd down back is kind of a thing of the past. Most of the backs in the league are multi-purpose these days and if you can find a really good big back great, but how many are there in the league?

  13. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Both guys have been playing so physicals should be good.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s the only involvement Ross should have. Sending private planes, upgrading facilities and paying players.

      • son of a son of a shula's avatar son of a son of a shula says:

Ross took the blame as he should have but I think if the other guy who got suspended for a full year was trying to make a power play. If he landed Tawmmy and Payton he would have got control of the club. 🤷‍♂️

  14. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Both players we traded for make us a better football team. They’re both perfect fits for what we do.

  15. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

This WS turned in some duds the last two games

  16. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Naples, as for Ogbah being the only pure DE we have, in our system which is a 3-4 base, Wilkins and Sieler are DE along with Ogbah who is also a hybrid edge guy at times. Davis and Jenkins are NT. Flowers who is banged up can play both inside and out. Phillips, Ingram, Van Ginkel and now Chubb are OLB/edge guys. Our front 7 got better today. I see Chubb and Phillips becoming the main guys sooner than later.

    —————-
It’s all fun and games until someone can punch a Defense in the mouth and bury them with grinding yardage… wears them out, too. I don’t think it’s a thing of the past (JMO).

I don’t find it necessary to have a bell-cow POWER BACK such as Derrick Henry, but a nice change-of-pace back (from ‘fast and furious’) can’t be ignored… keeps an opposing Defense honest at the very least. Always, JMO.

  18. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Today we got closer to the Bills

Didn’t think we had a chance for the division or winning in Buffalo later, now who knows, but if Chubb is for us what he was for Denver, I’d say why not

Wilson gives us insurance and a guy that can get the first down, like in the Pitt game on 4th down, that Edmonds whiffed on

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The main thing is making Mahomes, Allen and Jackson uncomfortable. That’s why we traded for Chubb. When Ogbah gets back into the mix we might be very happy with what we see. 🙂

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Something I haven’t heard yet is Edmonds getting traded is not only a throw in, but it gets his 9m left on his contract off the books, in what has been a bad FA signing

You don’t often have the luxury of clearing cap space that easy for a player, that isn’t performing up to his contract

  20. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I saw a report earlier that Eichenberg went on IR and Jackson came off of it.

  21. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Dead money on 4 of our top players

    Waddle 22m
    Ogbah 32m
    X 42m
    Tyreek 52m

  22. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

When you really think about the trade for Bradley Chubb, it was a proactive move in the present. Our secondary has gotten banged up, we’ve had to play DBs from the PS and off the street. One way to combat that is to get after the passer. Don’t allow QBs much time.

It’s like baseball, we need a bat and bullpen help. Live in the moment when you have a chance.

We’re playing the Bears this Sunday without them having Roquan Smith. 😉

  24. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Maybe, Chubb will help to “Get it fucking fixed.” Lol!

  25. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Watching some film breakdown of Tua vs the Lions. As we know, he had 7 incompletions on 36 throws, which is fantastic.

It’s even more impressive when you consider that 1 of his incompletions was a drop by Waddle on a WR bubble screen and another was a throw away because of a bad snap.

He was so ridiculously effective he really only had 5 incomplete passes on 36 throws, many of which were 10+ air yards.

It’s statistically maybe the best game of the year by a QB to date, and that is true even with him getting screwed out of the Sherfield TD.

I am so excited to see what he does for an encore against the Bears. Right now the weather forecast for Sunday in Chicago is sunny with 10-20 mph winds

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You missed the memo about his weak arm, always has to check down, too small to find his receivers because he can’t see over his OL, no pocket presence, not a leader, can’t carry the team (now, only because he has Hill and Waddle).

Where have you been, CK? Lol!

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, it’s crazy there are still some talking heads out there that are still knocking him for his arm, like Cowturd.

I think Cowturd’s newest goalpost move on Tua has us making the playoffs but being unable to play in the colder northern locations because of his ‘weak’ arm.

It’s absurd. He’s shown his other elite attributes more than make up for the fact he doesn’t have an Allen or Mahomes arm. Did Brady playing in NE have a significantly stronger arm than Tua? Good grief, lol.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Lol…good grief. Now, that’s an understatement.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

The knocks on Tua are laughable, but the adage he who laughs last laughs longest is one to watch. And Tua is holding in a bellyfull. Even Kurt is having a pop though he backtracks spectacularly on his time line after this tweet.

  29. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

    Tua Tagovailoa
    Pros:
Quick decision making and a quick release.
    Accuracy!
    Above average pocket presence.
    Underrated as a competitor.

    Cons:
    Not the biggest guy.
    Durability issues.
Has good arm strength, not great.
    Average running ability.

    Intangibles:
    He wins games.

  30. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

The NFL, as well as being a cliched “game of inches” is also a game of %s. From analytics, to play calling to drafting yada, yada.

This doesn’t feel like an all-in move (for Chubb), but it whiffs of “we like our hand and we’re going to bet big on it”. I love it personally. I’m taking the upside of a stud DE vs a crap-shoot in the draft (potentially think Yatil Green, Jamar Fletcher, Pat White, John Avery). Everything is a gamble, including injuries and I feel like we came out on top here. Time will tell.

Opponents are 41/98 on 3rd down and 6/13 on 4th. We’ve given up 2097 yards through the air through 8 games. (Comp Att Int Avg 98 286 4 7.3). Our turnover count is way down and opponents have 3 more TDs than we do. As PP mentioned, we are making average QBs look better than they should, by giving them too much time. Our banged up 2ndary is part of the equation, but I feel it’s done a better job than the front 7 on passing downs, relatively speaking. The D front has seemed to do better on running downs this season, getting lots of crucial stops when it mattered, but we aren’t making it uncomfortable enough for opposing QBs. Welcome Bradley Chubb. Go do your thing.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

“Go do your thing” and I’ll add, Do It Well!

Like others, I’m so tired of seeing opposing QBs hang for tea against our “pass rush.” Lol!

Well there were some peeps here today talking about him as a rental for this year.

It is a rental until the negotiations are completed. We might here it is all done in a few days or it may stretch out until February. We can always Franchise tag him, but from what has been said he is looking to get north of 100M deal and he has ALL the power now. we gave up a 1st and a 4th for the 10 week rental. now we MUST concede to his demands or he shops himself.

Bad deal, but I’ll shut up about it now until it happens. yay, go chubb….

By the way and JMO… Hunter Long SUCKS.

It’s about time you guys are finally seeing it

Watching his college tape, right after his draft, showed he couldn’t catch, but I was ridiculed, because he had the most catches his last year of all NCAA TEs

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Your memory is skewed, Steve. When we first drafted him, I was the one saying his tape showed he couldn’t get separation, his only catches were wide open, and when he was covered he never made the tough catch, and you argued he was a good pick and would be a good blocking and receiving TE for us. You and I specifically went back and forth on it for a little bit on that.

At some point in his first year was when you started saying he was a bad pick, and granted you’ve been the most vocal on the board consistently saying that since then, but it definitely wasn’t right after we drafted him.

  45. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

I’m pretty psyched about Chubb. Miami desperately needed some pass rush help this year. And I’m confident they will get a contract done.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

I agree. I think they made the deal knowing full well that they were going to sign Chubb. That gives us Phillips and Chubb as bookends at edge rusher

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

These kind of articles are BS, sure Baker restructured, so the deal could get done, but it’s not like he reduced his salary, he likely gets money sooner as players typically do in this situation

Tua has passed every test this year, 2 left can he be effective in the wind and cold

Well find out about the wind a little on Sunday 15mph

    It’s -30, but it’s sunny 😁

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

64 is the high in Chicago Sunday

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

LOL, it’s funny because I didn’t even think to look at what temp was being forecast.

Tua wasn’t great in the rain against the Titans last year, but I think you can throw that out because of the entire Flores and offense situation.

Then against Pitt two weeks ago, he wasn’t very sharp once the rain started coming down. That was part of the reason I asked if it was raining during the game. But again, situationally, he was likely a bit rusty after his 2 weeks off.

Playing in weather is the last refuge of Tua haters. If he shows he can play at a high level in weather there is nowhere left to run.

  54. ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

This is a beautifully designed play and, errr, why you need to be accurate.

Sherfield drops underneath forcing the corner to drop off Waddle and cover him, leaving penguin to drop into the middle of a zone, right to where Tua has already thrown it, leaving the LB clutching thin air trying to intercept and before the deeper corner or safety get ever there. Undefendable and a 12+ yd pick up. The first tweet is Tua cocked and ready to release. The next tweet in the thread shows the full play.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The breakdown of the Lions game shows there were a number of throws like this, that require great anticipation and accuracy, yet you still see so many “it was just the Lions” or “anyone could hit wide open receivers all day” comments.

      • ukfinfan's avatar ukfinfan says:

At that release-point, even the biggest Tua hater would struggle to say #17 was wide open!

So many talking heads are saying Tua has been surrounded by speed and that’s why he’s succeeding also, but when you design plays like this to pull defenders to where they can’t impact a play, MM deserves a boat-load of kudos.

On how having the QB helps team build: it does change how you’re able to big picture operate. It doesn’t dictate it. Teams win, individuals don’t. It’s a difficult place to be when your in-search. There is some clarity in regards to being very, very confident in your starting QB.

“(McDaniel) probably had a little bit of influence on that one,” Grier said. “Jeff is a guy we’ve watched. He’s a tough kid. He’s physical. We had talked about him in the offseason as well. So when the opportunity came when Denver asked for Chase, I mean, it was specifically to get the deal done. They wanted Chase, so we had to find a running back and fortunately, John (Lynch) and Kyle (Shanahan) and talking to them, we were able to get a deal done to get Jeff here and I know he and Mike and Raheem (Mostert) were all hugging and having their kumbaya moment together, being back together. But it’s cool. He adds toughness. He’s familiar with the system. So very excited to get him here and see what he adds to the team.”

Guess the days of Tua not throwing deep are over.

Tyreek Hill & Jaylen Waddle combined for over 200 yards on targets traveling 10+ air yards in the Dolphins’ Week 8 victory over the Lions. On such passes, Waddle racked up 5 receptions, 81 yards, 2 TDs on 5 targets while Hill recorded 7 receptions, 164 yards on 9 targets. Overall, Hill was targeted on 55.71% of Tagovailoa’s air yards resulting in week-leading 12 catches (tied 1st) and 188 yards receiving (1st) among pass catchers. The duo have been the most productive receivers on vertical routes this season by a significant margin. Hill has now gained 502 yards on vertical routes while Waddle has 400 yards.

Tua had the back free on the check down as well for a solid gainer,
but his quick release gunned the ball out to Hill before the DB could put on the brakes for chunk yards.
Tua had enough touch to get the ball over that LB standing in the passing lane and still drop it in to Tyreek.

The other Lions LBs and DBs were made worthless by the coach’s design.

Me too, Ken. I think this is the week we finally play a whole game on both sides of the ball and we beat the bears by 2 or 3 scores.

I think we don’t have to worry about Fields beating us with his arm and we have the team speed on defense to stop him from running all over us.

And I don’t see the Bears stopping our offense unless the weather gives them an assist slowing us and the game down and turning this into a run, run, run game for both teams.

Right now, the forecast is good for us.

    Shoddy BleacherReport writing

Since Miami isn’t scoring—the team averages a middling 22.3 points per game—at the same rate as the Baltimore Ravens (26.0 PPG), Buffalo Bills (29.0) or Kansas City Chiefs (31.9 PPG)

In Tua’s 5 full games we’ve scored 130 pt or 26 per game

The good ILB’s kept escaping me. This draft does not have many good ones and many are smallish.

    Phelon,

Replying from further up, but you’re exactly right and that’s all QBs. Rodgers has had some good WRs and now that he doesn’t, they aren’t winning. Cousins has his primetime moments but is winning convincingly with all the talent around him. Allen exploded as soon as he got Diggs. Old Man Brady looked good…while he still had a plethora of top WRs.

So many QBs get e terrible reputation they never earn. Mahomes may not even be starting today if he wasn’t drafted by Reid. Mayfield wasted his opportunity when he still had top WRs. He’ll never get another chance. Tua finally get elite WRs and look at him go. It always surprises me how basic football knowledge is never promoted by talking heads. Must not bring enough clicks.

I only mentioned it because M13 wasn’t aware of some of the earlier conversations.
    —————-
Nah, I was well aware of the earlier convos. I saw that shortly after the trade for Chubb, we were already working on a long-term contract for him.

Nobody posted it as breaking news and I was at work when that fact came out via the football media.

And again, I think it’s most obvious that we didn’t trade away a 1st-rounder for a rental truck.

  90. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

JMO, but I don’t consider us as Super Bowl contenders until we can run AT WILL against other teams on the Offensive side of the ball.

Conversely, and on Defense, until we can stop teams from throwing on us.

We’re getting DANGEROUSLY close on both accounts, though!!! We need our Defense to get healthy and our O-Line to continue to gel (sucks that we lost Eich for the season).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Eich hasn’t been ruled out for the season but will miss at least 4 games.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        OH! That’s good!

I get confounded by the new rules (and the reporting on as much) when one gets put on IR: SEASON-ENDING IR, or 4-game IR. It’s some BS being 99% of the time it’s reported strictly as IR. SMH

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

There is a new 4 game IR. The same one Jackson was on and just came off.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I get that. But reporters need to be more concise when stating somebody goes on IR. At face value, it seems one is done for the season.

How about IR-D (‘D’ representing designated to return after 4 games).

  91. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

There is no four week IR or regular IR.

If a player is placed on injured reserve they must remain on the list and unavailable to the team for a minimum of four weeks. The team may select to re-instate up to eight players per season from the list.

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s not semantics. I just explain to you the rules. There is no difference in designation. And reporters will not necessarily no if an injury is season ending or not. All players placed on IR may come back after four weeks. If they can heal in the amount of time.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Right. It also allows teams to bring players up from the PS or sign a player off the street to fill that roster spot. It’s a good thing. Back in the day those players might have been lost for the season even if they could have come back at some point.

  93. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What I like about Phillips and Chubb is they can both play on either side. The addition of Chubb is the hope to get pressure on the QB with just 4 without having to blitz so much. That could really improve our defense.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

If you watch the highlights of his 5.5 sacks this season he rushes from all over kind of like Jason Taylor used to do for us

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Yeah he’s a big edge guy with speed who also plays the run. I know you aren’t a fan of the trade, but most of the NFL world thinks it was a slam dunk. We’ll see how he pans out. But anytime you can get a 26 year old proven pass rusher you do it. They don’t grow on trees. 😉
