2023 Miami Dolphins – Pre Free Agency and Draft

As we head into the roster building and tweaking stage of the year, let’s take a look at how the current roster shapes up, and where this team needs to focus as we near NFL free agency. We have an awful lot of players that were on the 2022 team that are now UFA’s (Unrestricted Free Agents), which means they are free to sign with any NFL team and are no longer part of our team or under our control. A fair amount of those players won’t be returning, but there are a few who made an impact on our season last year. Since there are 29 in total, realistically at least 2/3 of those players will be playing football elsewhere. We’re over the cap by more than $12M at the moment, so there will be cuts, and of course some restructuring of contracts of roster players in order to give the team some cap room to not only sign some of the players that were here last season, but some new ones as well. This is an annual exercise every NFL team does to manipulate the salary cap. Players get more guaranteed money this season in order to lower their salary cap hit, and the money is deferred down the line to next season and beyond. Obviously, at -$12M, we have our work cut out for us, but the FO will make it happen as they always do.

Free Agents

OFFENSE – TE Mike Gesicki, QB Teddy Bridgewater, RB Raheem Mostert, RB Jeff Wilson, RB Myles Gaskin, RB Salvon Ahmed, LT Eric Fisher, TE Adam Shaheen, OT Greg Little, WR Trent Sherfield, WR River Cracraft, OT Brandon Shell, G/C Michael Deiter, OT Geron Christian, FB John Lovett

DEFENSE – LB Andrew Van Ginkel, DT John Jenkins, LB Melvin Ingram, CB Nik Needham, S Eric Rowe, LB Duke Riley, S Clayton Fejedelem, LB Elandon Roberts, DE Trey Flowers, LB Sam Eguaoven, DB Justin Bethel, P Thomas Morstead, S Elijah Campbell, CB Trill Williams

There are certainly some impact players on this list, especially considering the most obvious one, our entire running back roster is on the list. Of the 4 RB’s, I’d be surprised if more than one or two return. With limited funds, we may sign one, draft one, and then pick up a couple of UDFA’s after the draft. Other than the entire running back room, Andrew Van Ginkel who has been a very good player for our team may get his shot at a nice contract, so I won’t be surprised if he’s elsewhere this season. Melvin Ingram had a nice season for us last year, but his contract demands will decide whether we’re able to re-sign him. One of my favorite players, CB Nik Needham is coming off an injury, which gives us a better chance at bringing him back. Elandon Roberts had an excellent season, his best as Miami Dolphin. He fits new DC Vic Fangio’s scheme perfectly as well. Punter Thomas Morstead had a nice season for us and wants to return, so we’ll see how that plays out. The 2 former 49ers WR’s Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft were nice additions, but we do have last year’s 4th RD pick Erik Ezukanma that should be ready to see more significant playing time, so one or both of those face long odds to be back.

TE Mike Gesicki had his quietest season as a Miami Dolphin which would signal that he has played his last season as a Dolphins TE. Gesicki caught less than 1/2 the amount of passes as his previous season, and although he may not fit what Mike McDaniel wants in Miami, I feel he will get his chance to catch 70-80 passes elsewhere next season. Our Defensive line has been superb, with the exception of NT/DT, where starter Raekwon Davis has been the weak link. Injuries are a part of it, but more push up the middle could have resulted in lots more sacks for defense. Backup John Jenkins is a free agent, but I’m not sure what Fangio wants to do there, so he also may be in jeopardy. Our O-line depth are nearly all UFA’s, Brandon Shell in particular had a very nice showing last season at RT, and Greg Little filled in at LT and RT due to injuries. My guess is we’ve seen the last of G/C Michael Deiter. Depth guys like Trill Williams and Elijah Campbell were forced into difficult situations due to injuries, but showed well at times. The same could be said for Safety Clayton Fejedelem and CB Justin Bethel who are primarily ST’s guys. QB Teddy Bridgewater, widely regarded as a great signing as a backup QB couldn’t stay healthy in any of his appearances which means it’s very unlikely we revisit that mistake.

NFL Free Agency begins on Wednesday March 15th. We all know starting QB Tua Tagovailoa is taking judo classes in order to protect himself better when being taken to the ground, but regardless of that fact, the Dolphins just have to make sure they have a reliable backup QB, unlike the disaster that was Teddy Bridgewater last season. It’s possible 2nd year QB Skylar Thompson get the opportunity to be the backup, but considering Tua’s health concerns, I think the Dolphins look to a more established QB. The QB FA list is long, but there may be a couple of players that won’t be exclusively looking for a starting gig that may be willing to accept a backup job, especially if the QB is likely to miss time, which unfortunately at the moment, is a possibility here in Miami. Of the younger players, I’d think Taylor Heinicke (30) and Mike White (28), Gardner Minshew (27), Jarrett Stidham (26) and possibly Jacoby Brissett (30) might be willing to accept a backup job, especially when all the starting jobs have evaporated. Brissett had a better ’22 than he did with the Dolphins in ’21. White had some great games for the Jets, until he entered the M*A*S*H unit himself after getting pummeled by the Bills defense. Heinicke has 25 NFL starts so lots of experience for a young player and is a capable QB. I like Gardner Minshew and feel he’d be a perfect backup to Tua. Jarrett Stidham got a few late season starts last season for the Raiders and looked solid in at least one I watched. Of older players, Case Keenum (35), Andy Dalton (35) and Joe Flacco (38) would all be fine doing backup duty, but Keenum would be my choice among that group.

There’s been lots of talk about upgrading MLB here, but considering we drafted Channing Tindall last season with our first pick #102 (RD 3), and we have #55 Jerome Baker, and last year’s starter Elandon Roberts will be a less expensive option than any of the group of Tremaine Edmunds, Kwon Alexander, or Levonte David, I’d be betting on Roberts return rather than any of those guys. I know we’ll be restructuring contracts, but we’re -$12M now, so we have work to do to get in the black, and out of the red. There’s more uncertainty at CB, and one place where we might be able to free up a good amount of cap space is CB Byron Jones. The big question is, does he get another opportunity to play here in Miami after a lost season? The Dolphins, at least outwardly, haven’t slammed the door on Jones returning, but a post June 1st cut could save the Dolphins $13.6M against the cap. As I’ve previously mentioned, I think it’s imperative we re-sign Nik Needham who has proven his worth over and over again, and if he’s healthy enough to begin the season on time, he should be a priority re-sign.

The NFL Draft will be Thursday April 27 – Saturday April 29. I’ll get into the draft and our outlook on that after free agency is done as we’ll have a much clearer picture of our needs at that point. We have a a player or two on our roster that deserve contract extensions, and that usually allows for some salary cap relief in the immediate future. DT Christian Wilkins has to be priority number one. No player has earned an extension more than Wilkins. He had a great 2021 season and he followed that up with an exceptional season in ’22. He’s due a big payday, and you must reward your own guys. Zach Sieler, Wilkins’ defensive line mate is another player deserving an extension. The proverbial lunch pail player, Sieler is one of the best rotational defensive linemen in the NFL. He’s playing for a paltry $3.1M and he’s the type of player every NFL team covets, a guy who shows up, works hard, and does his talking on the field with his play. The other player is on the side of the trenches, G Robert Hunt. He’s probably one of our best draft picks in recent years, and in ’24, Hunt will be a free agent. There’s always the franchise tag, but I’d love to see Hunt on this team long term, he’s our best, most consistent offensive lineman not named Terron Armstead, and he’s our own homegrown talent. Pay that man his money!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

The way that mock fell, if it were me, I would have had:

    51. Emanuel Forbes CB Mississippi State
    77. Ivan Pace, Jr ILB Cincinnati
    84. Israel Abanikanda, RB, Pitt
    178. Payne Durham TE Purdue
    240. Connor Galvin OT Baylor

Some undrafted guys I would have gone after as UDFA signings are:
    Stetson Bennett QB Georgia
    Jaylon Thomas OT SMU
    Michael Jefferson WR Louisiana
    Kemari Averett TE Bethune Cookman
    Jerome Carvin OG Tennessee
Carlton Martial LB Troy – He’s a SS/LB tweener. A 5’9 215 pound thumper. Said to have a high football IQ. In his college career (5th year senior) he has over 500 tackles, 10.5 sacks, 8 FF and 6 INT’s.

Had to repost this: Thanks for the research, M!

Alright, I figured out how to speed the process up (YAY!).

According to Pro Football Reference (not analytics, but actual NFL stats), there are 112 qualifying LBs (both inside and outside) for the missed tackle % stat (I assume it’s based on enough snaps to qualify). Here are some notable names…

    Tremaine Edmunds: #5 of 112, 1.0%
    Bobby Wagner: #7 of 112, 1.4%
    Duke Riley: #11 of 112, 2.2%
    CJ Mosley: #31 of 112, 4.2%
    Roquan Smith: #37 of 112, 4.5%
    Fred Warner: #55 of 112, 5.8%
    Elandon Roberts: #77 of 112, 7.0%
    Micah Parsons: #79 of 112, 7.1%
    Raekwon McMillan: #90 of 112, 7.9%
    Eric Kendricks: #92 of 112, 8.1%
    Jerome Baker: #96 of 112, 9.1%

This is certainly NOT to say Jerome Baker is chopped liver (he certainly isn’t!), but if we can upgrade from him, perhaps we should.

We could probably get a 3rd round pick for trading Baker, we cut Byron Jones, and there ya have it: enough money to easily sign either Edmunds or Wagner.

Then draft a CB, TE, O-Lineman, and RB this year with the additional 3rd rounder.

BBM; Thanks for doing the mock draft. Hope Ross and the FO saw it!!
TIM; I TOTALLY REJECT your explanation that the crappy O-Line had NOTHING to do with our QB injuries.

One QB went down because his finger hit a helmet?? Could it be the helmet of a pass rusher who got close enough to cause the injury, or was it Divine Intervention??
C’mon, Tim, is THAT ALL U GOT???

And both of Tua’s serious injuries were caused by TUA??? Guess that was the Devil hitting Tua, eh???

The brutal truth is that from Tannehill to Matt Moore to our 3 quarterbacks this year, our quarterbacks have been running for their lives during most of the Ross Regime seasons. And, in NO YEARS DURING THE ROSS YEARS has our O-Line been ranked in the Top-10 of the NFL.

Defeat has many explanations, none of them good.
    Victory needs no explanations.

Time to walk the greyhound and hit the sack.

  6. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

That is telling that both Roberts and Baker are in the bottom half of that ranking. Is it them or was it the scheme that put them in difficult positions to make the play/tackle?

Riley’s 2.2% and #11 ranking is nice, even more so as I remember him making a number of tackles in space.

Man, just saw on the local news that 3 Pitbull’s on the loose killed someone on Norris Avenue here in Pensacola last night around 10 pm. That was right after I got to work and only 3-4 blocks from my office. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene. One of the dogs tried attacking animal control so a deputy shot it. They caught the second one and the third one 24 hours later is still roaming around. They didn’t say whether it was a man, woman or child that was killed. Hell, in this area, it may have been a homeless person.

That’s sad. Those dogs had to be trained to be that way. I have had 2 Pitbull’s as pets in the past and they were both pussies. The first one was even afraid of our cats. LOL

  9. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Well, shit. In the jail views for both counties I cover, about 90% of the people arrested in the last 24 hours in both have “No Bond”. Most of them are for violation of probation. There must have been a warrant sweep today for VOP’s. The others with “No Bond” are failures to appear or domestic battery that have to see the judge at 1st appearance in the morning to get a bond.

With that said, I am going to hit the couch in the boss’s office for a nap.

Tiny little balls ? Half the size of a grain of rice ? We get that once or twice a year … I think normally when it is REALLY cold
    ———————

I just saw this, Toba. Sorry I didn’t respond earlier.

Yeah, that’s a good measure. They were balls about the size of half a grain rice, but not hard little ice balls, it was really soft snow. It was basically snowing in hail form. Never seen it come down that way before.

  13. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    From PFT on Jones:
“ It’s important that Jones, a first-round pick of the Cowboys in 2015, not retire. If he does, he’d potentially owe the Dolphins $4.2 million in signing bonus money he received in 2020. So he just needs to wait to be released.”

  14. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

    From Russell Report:

How does the release or retirement of a player affect the Salary Cap?

When a player is released (or retires), the team is relieved of having the pay the player’s base salary (P5) and any Roster Bonus that may become due after that, but still will need to account for any Signing or Option Bonus prorations that haven’t yet counted against the Salary Cap.

Using the contract example above, if the player was released in year 4 of the deal, the team would not have to pay that Roster Bonus or the player’s base salary (P5) of $7M (or any base salaries thereafter). However, the year 4 Bonus pro-rations ($2M + $1M) would still count and the year 5 Bonus prorations ($2M + $1M) would accelerate and immediately count against the Cap in year 4. So, the team would still have to account for $6M of the player’s remaining Bonus prorations. Since he was expected to count $10M against the Cap had he been on the team (his Cap number), the team would realize a Cap savings of $4M due to his release and have to carry $6M in “dead money” against the Salary Cap in year 4.

Since the prorations from year 5 accelerated against the Cap, there will be no future Cap implications from the release.

The retirement of a player is treated the same as the release of a player.”

  16. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Oh boy, now we’re laser focused on missed tackle %? First, it’s not one of the best ways to define production by any player….maybe not even in the top 5. Second, some positions are setup to make tackles more than others….and that’s just one issue of many. Lastly, if a guy gets 100 tackles and has a .09% missed tackle rate, that means he attempted to make about 109 tackles and missed on 9 tackles. I rounding…don’t go math teacher on me! Over a 17 game season, that means the guy missed less than 1 tackle a game. It’s actually more like .06 of a tackle.
    ****
I don’t get why this has become a talking point. It’s not how you evaluate a guys effectiveness. I prefer Baker on the outside. He’s basically the size of a big safety. He can blitz. He can cover. And, he can be moved around quite a bit.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It’s a talking point because it was talked about and mentioned how bad our tackling was during the season multiple times when our defense was underperforming, and it was nameed as one of the primary reasons our defense suffered. Then the numbers validate exactly what we saw.

But sure, there is no correlation between our defenders having high missed tackle percentages and our seeing poor tackling during the season, so why talk about it? LOL

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

As for the numbers per game, if it’s one guy that misses twice the number of tackles on average than the rest of the league, maybe that’s not as big a problem, but when it’s half your defense that has the same issue, that adds up to a number of plays per game.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Finally, nobody is saying Baker sucks, it’s just pointing out one of his issues- that plagued our defense last year. If you’re below league average in a metric, you’re below average, and it’s an area that needs improvement.

It’s crazy how people dismiss or make excuses for poor metrics like everything has to be all bad or all good. Why can’t a player be a good player and still have some areas that need improvement? We all know Baker has good speed, can cover well, and has sideline to sideline ability. Nobody is saying he sucks.

  17. Randy's avatar Randy says:

Elandon Roberts’ missed tackle % over the last 5 seasons have been; 5.8%. 3.3%. 15.3%. 14.4% and 7%. Compared to Baker’s at; 12.2%. 4.5%. 8.2%. 7.1%. 9.1%. Baker has averaged about 100 total tackles a year. Roberts has averaged about 65. Folks don’t seem to have a problem with Roberts missing tackles.

  18. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Kong,
I was referring to the discussion about Baker. That’s where the conversation started. The conversation about our team missing tackles is a different conversation. It’s never just about one guy. Stopping the run is a team effort. Individual guys missing tackles is a piece of that, but it’s not the whole story. It’s a muddy stat anyway.
    ***
It’s like putting sack numbers on our OL when Tanny was our QB. He played a big roll in those sack numbers, but we think of it as poor OL play. I’m back and I couldn’t resist throwing shade at Tanny….I’m an asshole. Lol

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

For me, it started with Baker, but it was really a bigger theme about the whole defense. We were all kind of focusing on different aspects of it. Tim believes the tackling in the secondary was the bigger issue. I think it was all an issue.

We actually were pretty good against the run last year, especially when you isolate the regular run game (removing running QBs from the equation). It did seem that every game in the first quarter, we’d have a few missed tackles and teams would run effectively, then we got better as the game went on. That was my impression at least.

LOL @ Tanny. It’s a valid point, and I’m not trying to say our defenders all suck at tackling and that is the end of the story. Like all aspects of football, there is nuance in everything.

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Randy – What I agree with you on is that a lot of times, it’s the position you’re in to make a tackle has a lot to do with whether you make the tackle. I see guys get penetration and make contact with the ballcarrier, not necessarily make the tackle, but slow him up enough, or make him change direction enough for another player to make the tackle. I also feel that with so many defender sent to rush the passer, that leaves a lot less people behind to actually make a tackle, and considering how many players we sent at the QB, and how few sacks we had, there were few players in place left to make tackles. I think Baker and Roberts are a good tandem of inside backers. I think we had a chance in FA to upgrade the last couple of years, but now we don’t have the money available to do that.

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – That’s not true bro!

    Hey Randy!!! – Baker SUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCKKKKKKSSSSSS!!!!

    😛 (toothless!)

  21. Randy's avatar Randy says:

I think we could upgrade over Baker and Roberts. I don’t need to keep them around if other guys who are better are available depending on the money, of course. If we’re gonna upgrade at LB I’d keep Baker over Roberts but that’s just me. He’s younger, more productive and can be more flexible in how you use him.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Honestly, I think that was the real idea behind the Baker conversation. There are a couple of guys out there in Edmonds and Wagner that we might be interested in that could be an upgrade.

I agree that Baker is far more versatile than Roberts, and overall he’s just a better player, but one thing Roberts brings that I don’t see from any other LB on the team is those big hits. He lays the wood at least once or twice a game. I think it was 2021, he had a string of 3 games or so in a row where he made literal game changing plays with some big hits.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

hat isn’t me advocating keeping Roberts over Baker, lol. That would be dumb. the idea of Baker and Edmonds is exciting to me though. I think that immediately improves the middle of our defense in a big way. I just don’t know that we can afford Edmonds, assuming he isn’t the guy the Bills decide to tag.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        *That

  22. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Kong,
If we can actually sign Edmonds, I’m all in. He’s a very good LB. Wagner would be interesting, but he’s getting up there. He’s still producing, but I’m skeptical just how much longer that will be the case. I never like signing aging vets unless it’s a friendly contract.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m with you on Wagner. He supposedly wanted to leave the Rams to play for a winner, so maybe he would take less to play with us. Of course, if the Bills lose Edmonds, he’d make sense there too.

Considering our cap, maybe we don’t make any of these moves. We might just stand pat on D only adding what we can through the draft and players returning from injury.

I really don’t have any feel for what our FO will do this offseason. The Chubb trade really blew me away last year.

  23. Randy's avatar Randy says:

The thing with Fangio is that his defense isn’t reliant on star players….not that you won’t take them! He plays it tight and structural and doesn’t force guys into lots of individual situations where you’re just relying on a guy to make a play. It’s assignment defense. You always want individual talent, but Fangio doesn’t play aggressively or like to take a lot of chances. Play your role and rely on the overall defensive concept to work if everyone does their job.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I agree, and I think we actually have a lot of talent who have yet to become stars, but just might be on the borderline. I think Phillips is on the cusp of being an all pro and my feeling is with this defense, he’s gonna get there. Wilkins is already playing at that all pro level, and I think Chubb will play much better this season than last. Now we need Roberts and Baker to do their jobs well, and of course we need help in the secondary with all the injured CB’s. I hope Needham can get healthy and then we re-sign him, and maybe Kohou can elevate his play even more. We need Howard to get back to his former level of play, and we need Holland to have a significantly better season, and Brandon Jones to get back healthy as well. That’s a lot of “if’s” and “hopes”

It’s been a rough couple of weeks seeing her as much as possible before they leave. My wife and I are pretty devastated.

I also know this is going to eat into our travel budgets. I was planning on hitting the fest again this year, but I might have to choose between Hawaii and Miami, probably won’t be able to do both along with a few trips to Nebraska. Maybe we can hit Nebraska on a trip, then go from there to Miami for the fest. Have to see how it plays out.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I was thinking (Oh boy here we go, my wife would say, lol), Fangio took that time off last year was not employed as a coach for an NFL team. I wonder if McDaniel was not satisfied with our D during the season and him and Grier formulated their plan to move away from Boyer during the season. They had the plan halfway through the season they were going to replace Boyer after the season and Fangio would be their target.

They decided to make a play and trade for Chubb to help lure Fangio to Miami in the offseason.

    Yeah, I like conspiracies.

    • There could have been a little bit of that with McDaniel having a lot of respect for Fangio and knowing he would be available in 2023. I think adding Chubb was a chance to add a talented player. Not so much to lure Fangio but makes the roster better. Chubb has a had some injuries that have cost him to miss a bunch of games. But when he’s good to go he’s a very good player. He has the ability to have a big season as an Edge guy.

Not sure why this article came out today, but it’s a breakdown with vids of how dominant Phillips was in the final game of the regular season against the Jest. I think he still hasn’t even come close to reaching his potential yet. He’ll be a beast for us for years to come.

    https://www.thephinsider.com/2023/2/26/23615984/jaelan-phillips-bullied-the-new-york-jets-in-week-18

    • All the draftniks and many GMs and coaches liked Phillips as a prospect. The guy is huge and strong at 6-5 probably 270 now and he runs like a LB. He’s like Wilkins, never stops chasing the play. He’ll be 24 in May. LOL

  30. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    Randy,

I’d like to reiterate what Cav Kong said earlier, that nobody is saying that Jerome Baker sucks: he’s a damn good player. His missed tackle % certainly doesn’t define him either… not in the least.

I’d like to upgrade at MLB/ILB just as you do. The problem? I can’t see how we can fit both Baker and say Tremaine Edmunds under the cap… even if we move Baker to OLB.

All I can say is that Edmunds is 6’5″, 250 pounds, can run with the elite TEs in the league, kills the middle of the field, bats down passes at the LOS, and he’s a solid run-stuffer as well: there’s very little Edmunds can’t do as he has a truly elite stature and skillset… and he may not have reached his ceiling yet. Interesting fact: Edmunds had 4 (FOUR) PDs (Passes Defensed, or pass-break-ups) against us in the Wild Card game this year.

SMO (Strictly MY Opinion), I think I’m willing to trade Baker (say for a 2nd or a 3rd rounder this year) –along with a post-June 1st release for Byron Jones — to fit Edmunds under our salary cap as a FA. I’m also re-signing Elandon Roberts, who won’t cost nearly that much money. Maybe I’m crazy, or maybe I’m not (probably the former, LOL).

Anyway, it’s just one man’s opinion. Some may like it, some may hate it… but Vic Fangio knows better than all of us here combined, to be sure. Truth be told, I highly doubt we make such a move for Edmunds.

Here’s an interesting video on Edmunds, though it’s a year old…

How important is Bills LB Tremaine Edmunds?

    • Edmunds is a special talent. There are other teams that will make him the highest paid LB in the game.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Yeah, man! Edmunds is a special talent… probably the closest player I’ve seen in my search for “the next Brian Urlacher”. These guys don’t grow on trees: I can only imagine what Fangio could do with him.

IF we are to swing for the fences for another high-priced FA, he’s my guy… and better him than Jalen Ramsey (who at the moment would cost us Draft picks, but I don’t like Ramsey even as a FA).

      • He is very similar to Brian Ulracher.

The Jalen Ramsey trade would make sense if Boyer was still here. If we’re going to play more zone and some man within the quarters defense no reason to target a guy like that with the cost in draft capital and cap.

  31. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We’re not getting Edmunds or Jalen Ramsey. I’ll be happy if we’re able to re-sign Roberts

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Personally, I find it more important to extend/sign Christian Wilkins and Zach Sieler to new long-term contracts: we agree, Mike E.

But with this FO of ours, ya never know if we might be swinging for the fences again.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I very truly get the sense that Steve Ross is stepping down soon, and he may try to replicate what the Rams did to win a Super Bowl before he’s gone. That would mean so very much to Boss Ross.

      • I’m hoping Ross learned his lesson and realizes he put his faith in Grier and McDaniel. Let them build the team. We have talent. We need to deepen the roster. Don’t be surprised if we have 15 new players on the 53.

Think about how many players Fangio knows about. He’s a wealth of knowledge besides being a top DC.

  32. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Jerome Baker: #96 of 112, 9.1%

      2 things to notice:
      1) his rate was one of the worst in the NFL.
96th best … if there are 112 eligible LBs, he’d be the 3rd best on every team or worse.
As Randy says, to get to 9.1% being 100, he must’ve missed 10 or 11 tackles, which is less than 1 missed tackle per game (more like 2/3 of a tackle, as Randy says), so it’s not awful, but what if that one tackle allows an opponent to convert a long 3rd down? Every game?
Did we not see this happen?

      2) if he’s so good in other areas that we can overlook this, what are those?
He had zero INTs last year and has had only 3 in his career.
He’s averaged 5 sacks / season in his career, even though Flores/Boyer featured a very high blitz rate over most of Baker’s career.
He’s forced 1 fumble per year, recovered none, and defensed about 3 and a half passes per year.

His open field speed has not stopped any of the running QBs we’ve faced.
TEs have eaten us up for years.

IF (big if) we can get
      Tremaine Edmunds: #5 of 112, 1.0%
      OR
      Bobby Wagner: #7 of 112, 1.4%
(They miss about 1 tackle per year, not 1 per game.)

Then we would be getting a young rising star who is way bigger than Baker @ 6’5 250
      OR
a potential HoF’er with multiple All pro or Pro Bowl awards who is way bigger than Baker @ 6 ft 241.

Baker is only 225 and tallish @ 6’2, so that is lanky.

I like Baker, but it’s Fangio’s opinion that matters.

Maybe Boyer’s scheme put Baker in bad positions to make tackles.

I do find it humorous that only now, so many on this board are calling Tremaine Edmunds a “special talent”. A mere week ago, nearly everybody on this board denied his talent and thought Jerome Baker was by far the superior LB.

    Hey, it’s all good. 🙂

    • Who said that? I didn’t see anyone say that? All I keep seeing is how Baker isn’t that good, we might release him and he misses too many tackles. LOL

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Baker is damn good, we aren’t going to release him (maybe trade him?), and his missed tackles do NOT define him as the very good player he is.

      • I agree with that. But that’s not what my reply was about. You said nearly everybody on this board said Baker was superior to Edmunds. Who?

I said about a month ago when the subject first came up that Edmunds is probably the best coverage LB in the game and at 6-5 250 that’s crazy. Most of the conversations I’ve seen are about how expensive he’ll be and do we really want to spend big money on a LB that isn’t a pass rusher.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

We’re getting into semantics and assumptions (both of us). I did not say that folks on this board OPENLY stated that Baker was superior to Edmunds… more that they felt that way by defending Baker and not giving Edmunds his propers.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Tremaine fits the Bills system, if he doesn’t fit ours the same he wouldn’t be worth it

When was the last time ya heard somebody on this board call Tremaine Edmunds a “special talent”? You said it last night (good on you!), and today Phelon called him a special talent… after outright bashing the idea of bringing him to Miami.

      • Since he was drafted. Lots of people on this blog were high on him. Not sure why you’re confusing so many things.

Lots of people think Edmunds is a special talent. Signing him to a big contract when we already have 5 big contracts (6 with Byron) is a totally different discussion.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I already solved that equation, Bro.

      • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Still living in your head I see. I didn’t “bash” Edmunds going to Miami, just said I didn’t think it was likely. Reading is fundamental. And Edmunds being a special talent doesn’t mean that Baker sucks or isn’t special too. The two things can co-exist.

  45. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Take a serious look at the TEs in this Draft… we’re most likely to draft one.

    • If we can’t land a good blocking TE, but we move on from Gesicki, I can see us adding a guy who’s a good receiver and more quick twitch than Gesicki. We need a TE who can pick 7-8 yards on a regular basis. Gesicki is more like 0-3 yards on those short outside routes that didn’t work well, or he makes some middle of the field catches for 10-25 yards. But it wasn’t consistent.

I don’t think Jackson has enough talent as a passer to go all the way. He stresses defenses heavily with his legs and has some good games passing the ball, but he’s too inconsistent as a passer IMO. He’ll continue to win a lot of regular season games, but I think he’ll always struggle to go deep in the playoffs.

It’s always good to upgrade but moving on from Baker to add another we feel is better puts us right back in the same situation. We still have a void of LBs. Add to Baker, not addition by subtraction.

unfortunately (or maybe fortunately, who knows?) they have to learn a whole new defense, new language, new concepts stressed so they have the learning curve again. We had continuity on defense but not offense, now with the first year in a repeat offense we are changing the defense.

      sigh

anyway, hopefully Fangio will be really good at teaching his system or it is easy / simple to communicate so they all get on the same page immediately

      • They have a lot of time to learn the playbook, the spring installs in OTAs and minicamps, then TC and the PS. Fangio is known as a great teacher and his schemes are pretty basic in concept. What he does well with his defenses is teach, game plan and play calling.

The only thing that will hold back Tindall is if he struggles to learn the mental aspects of the defense and once again he can’t get on the field. I sure hope that’s not the case. He’s got the physical ability.

  84. “There’s a lot of different ways that you can get to the desired results,” McDaniel said. “First and foremost, from the running back position on our team, you need a team player that’s willing to do whatever it takes to win. It looks dire but we may already know some guys are on board with coming back. There will be cuts and moving on from some players. We could see at least 15 new players on the 53 this year. We have a talented core. Need to add the right players to take the next step.

(laughter) No, I think I’m grounded enough to understand that I don’t think you necessarily want it to be all roses. Part of the beauty of this job is to handle some turmoil. I think I’m pretty comfortable with where I am with that. I think I’d probably tell myself to just get ready (because) you’re going to want to win more for the franchise even more than you can conceive, and that’s ok. So don’t hyperventilate.”

  88. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Game management critique….lol

((On game management) – “I wouldn’t be honest if I told you that going into the season, I wouldn’t expect some natural learning curve. There is a lot of responsibility that I don’t pull any punches. It’s a difficult job. That being said, I feel like there are clearly some situations I’d like to have back. There were some situations that I was ok with. I think that really, every year for me, I’m going to have a high level of anxiety if I’m not finding stuff that I can’t completely get better from. That belief that you’re constantly a better version of yourself, that drives me. There are plenty of situations that – we had as many pre-snap penalties, I think we led the league in them offensively. So obviously there is a lot of work to do that we’re all excited about rectifying. Clock management is just another layer of things that I’ve already begun the process of – call the play faster.”

  89. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    Oh my…that must be huge.

(On how watching tape of themselves will benefit the offense) – “It’s going to be huge. Little written about scenarios that our offensive players haven’t had an offseason where they are watching themselves in half a decade or maybe more. That’s incredibly important. I even throw digs in jest; but I had to be reminded by coaches on staff last year that this is like the fourth consecutive season that these guys have watched a different team’s cut ups in the offseason and haven’t watched themselves. That adds up fast. I’m very, very excited for the players being able to come back and digest the system and not have any variance offensively. We’ll just be correcting, building, and improving upon what we did last year.”

  90. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

    And one for D…

(How do you see the defense fundamentally changing under Defensive Coordinator Vic Fangio?) – “I think it’s kind of an unfair comparison to a degree. I think in my NFL career, Vic is one of one in my opinion, of creating and innovating and sustaining high-quality defense. I don’t know about you but in 1995, I was 12-years-old and cheering for the inaugural Colorado Rockies. He started coordinating defenses at that time. But then has been able to adjust it to the game, and to the things he’s having to defend and to the players that he has. I think having the opportunity to add Vic Fangio is as exciting of an opportunity in the offseason that I could have. I think all players on defense will benefit from it. I know myself included, I’ll benefit from the process of being able to work with him on a daily basis and tap into his infinite wisdom. I mean shoot, last week, just in one week in the office with him, I had a couple of hours of just very gratifying football conversations that will just help me moving forward form the head-coaching position. On top of that, he was giving me stories on Pat Swilling and Kevin Greene – just stuff that from a football historical perspective, I very much appreciate. Just last week, I got to find out about his simulated pressures that he’s so famous for – what provoked him, what was the advent of that and when it was. Just that stuff is very interesting but now you take it a step further. When you have a guy that is innovating, over time, I think the residuals for players are really everything they sign up for.”

MM’s comments on his WRs were pretty cool, too.

Ken – I get no to Wentz because he’s been unreliable as far as health, but why no on Minshew? He’s a capable QB, and someone has to be the backup. I don’t know if we can expect Skylar to be that guy right now, but Minshew has done it already, and done it well. He has nearly a 3:1 TD/INT ratio (44 TD’s / 15 INT’s), has a 93 QBR, what more could you ask for? Unless you want to bring a legit starter here, I think Minshew is a perfect fit for what we need

I agree, if we have a spot for 3 QBs, still have hope Skylar takes the year 2 leap after a decent playoff game

His best attribute is his legs, would like to see him wing it, like he did in camp and PS

Tindall should benefit from a less complicated D, when he’s reacting and not thinking he’s really good

I’m not so sure we need to draft a CB early, between Kohou, Trill and Needham (if re-signed) and maybe Iggy we could be fine playing more zone

We’re changing away from a CB dependent D, so why would we draft one early?

I’d get a TE in the 2nd with our first pick

  96. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Every D is CB dependent! This is a passing league. You can never have enough good CB’s You comment is silly, as if CB’s don’t matter in zone schemes.
