2023 Miami Dolphins – Pre Free Agency and Draft

As we head into the roster building and tweaking stage of the year, let’s take a look at how the current roster shapes up, and where this team needs to focus as we near NFL free agency. We have an awful lot of players that were on the 2022 team that are now UFA’s (Unrestricted Free Agents), which means they are free to sign with any NFL team and are no longer part of our team or under our control. A fair amount of those players won’t be returning, but there are a few who made an impact on our season last year. Since there are 29 in total, realistically at least 2/3 of those players will be playing football elsewhere. We’re over the cap by more than $12M at the moment, so there will be cuts, and of course some restructuring of contracts of roster players in order to give the team some cap room to not only sign some of the players that were here last season, but some new ones as well. This is an annual exercise every NFL team does to manipulate the salary cap. Players get more guaranteed money this season in order to lower their salary cap hit, and the money is deferred down the line to next season and beyond. Obviously, at -$12M, we have our work cut out for us, but the FO will make it happen as they always do.

Free Agents

OFFENSE – TE Mike Gesicki, QB Teddy Bridgewater, RB Raheem Mostert, RB Jeff Wilson, RB Myles Gaskin, RB Salvon Ahmed, LT Eric Fisher, TE Adam Shaheen, OT Greg Little, WR Trent Sherfield, WR River Cracraft, OT Brandon Shell, G/C Michael Deiter, OT Geron Christian, FB John Lovett

DEFENSE – LB Andrew Van Ginkel, DT John Jenkins, LB Melvin Ingram, CB Nik Needham, S Eric Rowe, LB Duke Riley, S Clayton Fejedelem, LB Elandon Roberts, DE Trey Flowers, LB Sam Eguaoven, DB Justin Bethel, P Thomas Morstead, S Elijah Campbell, CB Trill Williams

There are certainly some impact players on this list, especially considering the most obvious one, our entire running back roster is on the list. Of the 4 RB’s, I’d be surprised if more than one or two return. With limited funds, we may sign one, draft one, and then pick up a couple of UDFA’s after the draft. Other than the entire running back room, Andrew Van Ginkel who has been a very good player for our team may get his shot at a nice contract, so I won’t be surprised if he’s elsewhere this season. Melvin Ingram had a nice season for us last year, but his contract demands will decide whether we’re able to re-sign him. One of my favorite players, CB Nik Needham is coming off an injury, which gives us a better chance at bringing him back. Elandon Roberts had an excellent season, his best as Miami Dolphin. He fits new DC Vic Fangio’s scheme perfectly as well. Punter Thomas Morstead had a nice season for us and wants to return, so we’ll see how that plays out. The 2 former 49ers WR’s Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft were nice additions, but we do have last year’s 4th RD pick Erik Ezukanma that should be ready to see more significant playing time, so one or both of those face long odds to be back.

TE Mike Gesicki had his quietest season as a Miami Dolphin which would signal that he has played his last season as a Dolphins TE. Gesicki caught less than 1/2 the amount of passes as his previous season, and although he may not fit what Mike McDaniel wants in Miami, I feel he will get his chance to catch 70-80 passes elsewhere next season. Our Defensive line has been superb, with the exception of NT/DT, where starter Raekwon Davis has been the weak link. Injuries are a part of it, but more push up the middle could have resulted in lots more sacks for defense. Backup John Jenkins is a free agent, but I’m not sure what Fangio wants to do there, so he also may be in jeopardy. Our O-line depth are nearly all UFA’s, Brandon Shell in particular had a very nice showing last season at RT, and Greg Little filled in at LT and RT due to injuries. My guess is we’ve seen the last of G/C Michael Deiter. Depth guys like Trill Williams and Elijah Campbell were forced into difficult situations due to injuries, but showed well at times. The same could be said for Safety Clayton Fejedelem and CB Justin Bethel who are primarily ST’s guys. QB Teddy Bridgewater, widely regarded as a great signing as a backup QB couldn’t stay healthy in any of his appearances which means it’s very unlikely we revisit that mistake.

NFL Free Agency begins on Wednesday March 15th. We all know starting QB Tua Tagovailoa is taking judo classes in order to protect himself better when being taken to the ground, but regardless of that fact, the Dolphins just have to make sure they have a reliable backup QB, unlike the disaster that was Teddy Bridgewater last season. It’s possible 2nd year QB Skylar Thompson get the opportunity to be the backup, but considering Tua’s health concerns, I think the Dolphins look to a more established QB. The QB FA list is long, but there may be a couple of players that won’t be exclusively looking for a starting gig that may be willing to accept a backup job, especially if the QB is likely to miss time, which unfortunately at the moment, is a possibility here in Miami. Of the younger players, I’d think Taylor Heinicke (30) and Mike White (28), Gardner Minshew (27), Jarrett Stidham (26) and possibly Jacoby Brissett (30) might be willing to accept a backup job, especially when all the starting jobs have evaporated. Brissett had a better ’22 than he did with the Dolphins in ’21. White had some great games for the Jets, until he entered the M*A*S*H unit himself after getting pummeled by the Bills defense. Heinicke has 25 NFL starts so lots of experience for a young player and is a capable QB. I like Gardner Minshew and feel he’d be a perfect backup to Tua. Jarrett Stidham got a few late season starts last season for the Raiders and looked solid in at least one I watched. Of older players, Case Keenum (35), Andy Dalton (35) and Joe Flacco (38) would all be fine doing backup duty, but Keenum would be my choice among that group.

There’s been lots of talk about upgrading MLB here, but considering we drafted Channing Tindall last season with our first pick #102 (RD 3), and we have #55 Jerome Baker, and last year’s starter Elandon Roberts will be a less expensive option than any of the group of Tremaine Edmunds, Kwon Alexander, or Levonte David, I’d be betting on Roberts return rather than any of those guys. I know we’ll be restructuring contracts, but we’re -$12M now, so we have work to do to get in the black, and out of the red. There’s more uncertainty at CB, and one place where we might be able to free up a good amount of cap space is CB Byron Jones. The big question is, does he get another opportunity to play here in Miami after a lost season? The Dolphins, at least outwardly, haven’t slammed the door on Jones returning, but a post June 1st cut could save the Dolphins $13.6M against the cap. As I’ve previously mentioned, I think it’s imperative we re-sign Nik Needham who has proven his worth over and over again, and if he’s healthy enough to begin the season on time, he should be a priority re-sign.

The NFL Draft will be Thursday April 27 – Saturday April 29. I’ll get into the draft and our outlook on that after free agency is done as we’ll have a much clearer picture of our needs at that point. We have a a player or two on our roster that deserve contract extensions, and that usually allows for some salary cap relief in the immediate future. DT Christian Wilkins has to be priority number one. No player has earned an extension more than Wilkins. He had a great 2021 season and he followed that up with an exceptional season in ’22. He’s due a big payday, and you must reward your own guys. Zach Sieler, Wilkins’ defensive line mate is another player deserving an extension. The proverbial lunch pail player, Sieler is one of the best rotational defensive linemen in the NFL. He’s playing for a paltry $3.1M and he’s the type of player every NFL team covets, a guy who shows up, works hard, and does his talking on the field with his play. The other player is on the side of the trenches, G Robert Hunt. He’s probably one of our best draft picks in recent years, and in ’24, Hunt will be a free agent. There’s always the franchise tag, but I’d love to see Hunt on this team long term, he’s our best, most consistent offensive lineman not named Terron Armstead, and he’s our own homegrown talent. Pay that man his money!

GO DOLPHINS!!!

  8. Rock, I think Grier has drafted some pretty damn good players the last few years. Even Tunsil and MFF were top players but it didn’t work out in Miami for whatever reason. Wilkins, Tua, Waddle and Phillips are all good.

  9. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I think Grier had/has put together a talented roster and good coaches….finally.

    For whatever reason, it’s lately…

    • I think it started when Ross handed him the keys in 2019 as the main man when Tannenbaum was fired. He blew it up and started over.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Yeah, I think he got too cute with some of the trades – some backfired. Some of the first rounders have sucked (Jackson, Iggy), but that is with any team. Overall he had put together a very good roster, but we have to keep our draft picks in the years moving forward otherwise that will doom us.

      • Once we traded for Tyreek Hill and added some other vets like Armstead and Chubb, we knew the team was trying to win now. I’m still a fan of that because we’ve rebuilt and changed so many times over the years sometimes you have to strike when the opportunity is there.

  10. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

We need to restock our draft capital somehow and tell Ross to shut the fuck up or get out of the fucking way…

…love his money, but spend it wisely asshole…lol

  12. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I guess we have different definitions of what a successful draft is. How many players from 2019 draft are still on the team? How many of those are contributing up to their draft status? ‘20? ‘21? Not fucking enough. We have two very good wide receivers that we used three first round pics on. We have a worthless left tackle, left guard, right tackle taken in the first round we have a back up quarterback that doesn’t even play special teams taken in the first round we are missing a shotgun blast of second third fourth and fifth round players from multiple drafts. Grief sucks

  16. Grier isn’t perfect, no GM is. Just asking not looking for an argument. Who were a lot of misses since 2019?

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Eichenberg, Jackson (maybe), Iggy , Long for starters. They were 2nd, 1st,1st, third rounders

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Eich was a double whammy because we traded up to get him.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

I think dieter was a third rounder in 2019. He’s backup material.

      • Fair enough, I knew those would be the players mentioned. But he also found good players in other rounds and avenues. That’s how it is for all teams. Right now we’re on the cusp of taking the next step, we’re not going backwards. You can’t predict injuries.

This is a big season for Grier and McDaniel. Adding a coach like Fangio is huge. If the 2023 team can’t even win a playoff game, we might see some changes again in 2024. I really hope that’s not the case. We have to be in the mix the next couple of seasons.

  17. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    Regarding the Flores ruling:

Judge Caproni said it was “difficult to understand” how there was only one Black coach the time that Flores filed his lawsuit in a league of 32 teams with 70% Black players.

Flores can now let a jury decide the merits of his claims against the NFL, Broncos, Giants and Texans, but allegations made against the Miami Dolphins must still go through arbitration.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Good news for us. Probably treated different than the other teams and the league because he was a Dolphins employee.

  18. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m not sure how Flores wins on Dolphins…what a dick…lol

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I can’t see him winning either.

The head of our organization is black. Flores’ replacement is black. And most importantly, when we hired Flores, he was black, lol.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Likewise, I can’t see him winning against the Texans just because they didn’t hire him after he announced his suite. They weren’t obligated to hire him.

Now the Giants and that whole sanfu, no idea what his chances are there. They clearly didn’t intend to hire him prior to his interview, but does that make it discriminatory?

If it was to meet the obligation of the Rooney rule, then it was done in bad faith. Does that mean discrimination? Or is it just a violation of league policy? I have no idea. I hope since this is going to trial we get all the details.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

        lol, *snafu, not sanfu

      • Flores is now the DC with the Vikings. Just shut up and coach. He totally ran with the BLM farce and yes it was a farce because too many people were too stupid to see it for what it was. Oh… you’re a racist. No… you just suck as a person. How’s that bag of shells?

  19. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Kong – I don’t recall the exact details with the Giants, but Flores had already interviewed with them, they had him in for a 2nd interview. It wasn’t a meaningless after the fact interview just to satisfy the Rooney Rule

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Besides, the Giants had already interviewed Leslie Frazier, who is black. Flores has nothing on the Jints

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

So the Giants had, in fact, already met the Rooney Rule requirements prior to that 2nd interview? That puts it in a different light.

From a legal standpoint (admitting I have no background in law in any way) I just can’t get from A to B how they prove discrimination in any of these claims. I’m not saying discrimination doesn’t take place in any NFL hiring. But how do they prove the reason he wasn’t hired was discrimination?

Does this mean the Texans were required to hire him? He made their short list. He’s never claimed he was offered the job, so why were the Texans required to hire him?

It may be ethically wrong for the Giants to set that 2nd interview knowing they already decided on their guy, but is it discrimination if it had nothing to do with the Ronney Rule?

How the heck is he going to prove anything about the Denver interview from 2 years ago?

      • It was part of the BLM movement that we all notice has no voice anymore. A total sham. Why? Because Trump is out and Biden is in. Let’s pretend that’s not what happened. Oh yeah, where is Antifa? They magically disappeared as well. The forest for the trees. I’m done being quiet about it. It’s not about right or left. • Kong, my post wasn’t directed to you. I agree with you. It’s a new reality.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

No worries, Tim. I wasn’t taking it personally. Just pointing out I was looking at the aspects of the lawsuit from a practical standpoint, not Flores’ motivation or the political characteristics. It’s two different conversations.

  20. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Oh yeah, make tht 4 years ago he interviewed with the Broncos, lol.

  21. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

As you said, the Flores ruling is specifically because we were his employer and I’m pretty sure the nfl requires a “wrongful termination” claim as something as subject to arbitration – and he probably signed a contract that requires termination

That’s generally the rule across the board when some signs an agreement to arbitrate (you can sue, you have to arbitrate) and he probably signed that agreement when he signed as HC for the Dolphins

But the part he is allowed to proceed in is the class action portion – I mentioned before that his suit wasn’t necessarily about the Dolphins bc it’s a class action and it’s really about the history of the nfl. You can’t or don’t really sign an agreement to arbitrate over something like that.

IMO, POST of the MONTH (I know, it’s only March 1st)! 😉

Antifa is still operating in some major liberal cities (see Portland), but BLM has been vastly marginalized. I’m tired of them both too, man: they miss the point because it’s all about hatred and mayhem.

  23. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Good points Tim.

The unintended consequence of the Rooney Rule is that some candidates will only get interviewed because they are black, and not because they are being considered for the position. The idea behind the rule is noble, but I think that it now needs to be modified in some way. In some cases, it’s actually insulting to the candidates if they aren’t seriously being considered.

    • That’s the word, Brian. Insulting. Some minority candidates know who teams are going to hire. But so do some white candidates. Teams like who they like. Take that away and it’s over. I think if people stopped acting like this country is 1960 Birmingham, Alabama with people being totally fucking stupid, we’d be good. You know why? It’s been changing for decades. Anyone have a problem with a black and white couple? Seriously? It’s not your business. We’re well past that. Humanism.

  24. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

In other words, When a court rules on whether something is subject to arbitration or not, the ruling is really whether some one agreed to arbitration

It’s not necessarily about the merits

I don’t know about that quote the judge mentioned – bc That is on the merits, but class action suits are really complicated and there may have been some sort of issue that needed to be addressed as a class action – or maybe there was a motion claiming the case had no merit – I haven’t been following the case, so these are just guesses based on what I read today

    • I don’t agree with that. I’m not defending Grier, I’m defending myself. If I was a GM I’m not paying Gesicki big money in this offense. He’s a one trick pony who can make spectacular plays but he disappears. People say we don’t get him the ball enough. Maybe he’s not open enough. He’s a galloper. He doesn’t run quick tight space routes well. He’s a talented player, but he’s not a complete TE. He’ll get paid somewhere and do some nice things, but it will be the same things.

ELSEWHERE, in the Battle of the Owls, the FAU basketball Owls went to Houston and DESTROYED the Rice Owls 103-74 in a game that was just completed. FAU hit 11 3-pointers IN THE FIRST HALF and tallied 57 points by halftime!! FAU now stands at 27 wins and 3 losses, with a road game @ Louisiana Tech Saturday before heading to the Conference USA tournament next weekend in Frisco, Texas, not too far from Ft. Worth. A fellow FAU alum told me the FAU team bus was scheduled to stop at Rice Stadium, where our beloved Dolphins WON SUPER BOWL VIII and completed their 2 year run at 32 wins and 2 losses. Did they quit giving comp picks for lost FA’s??

  35. So what we’re going to see from Fangio’s defense is a 4 man rush and a mix of quarters pass defense. Lots of zone mixed with some man. Some blitzing but probably less than a 3rd of the time. 😉

In today’s game base defenses are 4-2-5 or 3-2-6 most of the time. How else do you defend 10, 11 and 12 personnel groupings on offense? The standard base defenses usually only play early on, short yardage and inside of the 10 in the red zone. That’s what I see.

Tackling is the key on defense. If you can’t do that what’s the point? We’ve got some studs but the entire defense needs to improve as a group.

  36. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

We wouldn’t get compensation for Gesicki this draft, it would be next year. It depends on how many players we sign in free agency and what type of contracts they get compared to the players we don’t re-sign like Gesicki, or any of the WR’s or RB’s we don’t re-sign.

“I played in the SEC for three years and missed one game — and it wasn’t due to a football injury,” Forbes said at his combine podium session. “I just feel like I’m durable.

Edge/OLB Nolan Smith, 6’2 238 ran a 4.39 40 to go with 41.5 inches in the vertical jump and 10-foot-8 in the broad jump.

Also, “Nicknamed “The Freak,” Owen Pappoe is the kind of prospect you’d expect to put on a show at the NFL Scouting Combine, and the Auburn linebacker certainly didn’t disappoint in the event’s banner drill.”

The 6-foot 1/4, 225-pounder blazed the 40-yard dash in 4.39 seconds, the fastest time in the linebacker group on Thursday evening in Indianapolis. And the lighting-quick 1.52 10-yard split underscores a twitchiness that defined the Butkus Award semifinalist’s game at Auburn, where he served as a rangy linebacker with a knack for lowering the boom on ball carriers.

    ————————

Yeah the 3-3-5 too. Most teams do have 6 DBs on the field some of the time. It’s a result of the formations offenses are using. Especially on long down and distance and when teams go empty backfield. The 3-2-6 can also morph into a 5 man blitz with a LB up the middle and a DB coming off the edge.

Dude doesn’t stutter, isn’t making shit up on the fly, and obviously has vast experience with what he’s asked about… hence the interview.

    • My reply to this is we need to stop thinking about this war from the USA viewpoint as divided. It’s not. It comes from our Washington government and that’s how other nations view it. It’s not about our petty American politics. We are world police and we have been for many decades. Yes our government pisses away massive amounts of taxpayer money for global conflicts. We were born into it.

It’s not going to change by simply voting for one party over another. Remember the duopoly. Wealth and power is what controls the world, never the middle class and the poor. They want it to be the way they envision it. It’s not much different than the animal kingdom, which humans are a part of. Survival and ruling the roost still exists.

It’s going to take many more years for common sense globalism due to technology to conform. You can’t stop it though. We will all be dead before the Star Wars and Star Trek adventures begin. But doesn’t it always end up being the same thing just on another level?

This album is one of the best rock albums ever made. ‘Stairway to Heaven’ will forever be an iconic rock song. This was the jump from one of the best bands on the scene to the band to see. It’s history. No re-inventing it. That’s what happened. 😉

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Don’t know who “they” are, but I disagree about this class being stacked at the TE position. Michael Mayer is the top all-around prospect (and he’s not even close to Vernon Davis by any comparison), then there’s a very sharp decline afterward, IMO.

Personally, I do NOT like this class of TEs.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

As for saying it’s a stacked TE class and maybe the best in a decade, that doesn’t mean it has the best TE prospect they’ve seen in each draft over a decade, just that it’s a deep class. That’s the way I took it.

What does Vernon Davis have to do with it? He was drafted in 2006.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Like I said, Michael Mayer is the best prospect of this given Draft class (and he isn’t even close to Vernon Davis)… and it falls off a cliff very quickly after him. JMO, as always.

Vernon Davis was merely a frame of reference as to the top of this TE class.

      • That’s what I was trying to say, it doesn’t mean that these are the best TE prospects, just that there are a lot of quality ones. It’s deep, not the highest grades ever.

TEs are also hard to evaluate sometimes at the next level. The top guys don’t pan out a lot of the time and the ones that do are found after the 1st round and many times in the mid rounds.

    ————–
By the use of the word “deep”, it generally infers a boatload of high-quality talent… not modest/marginal talent. #DraftTalk

No, this class of TEs is not “deep”.

    • Let’s say there’s one highly graded TE at 7.5 or something. Then there are 11 between 7.0 – 6.3. Meaning these guys could become quality NFL TEs and names we’ll be seeing in games over the next bunch of years. These guys could be going 1-4 rounds as opposed to just one in the 1st and one in the 2nd, and then it drops to the 4th round. To me deep means more than just a few options.

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I do see where you (and DJ) are coming from. But in terms of #DraftTalk, deep infers a lot of quality at the top (days 1 and 2, rounds 1-3), not those who go as essential ‘second thoughts’ on day 3.

  83. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I think it depends on how you look at the TE group. If you are looking at all round good receiving and good blocking, it is not very deep (IMO).

Outside of Mayer it drops off for the rest of the top 5. Either you have a great blocking TE and not much of a receiving threat in the 6’7 280ish Darnell Washington (he kind of lumbers along running his routes but has great hands) or you have 3 other guys who can’t block for shit in Musgrave, Kincaid and Kraft. Then the bottom of the top 10 you have more well-rounded TE’s in Sam Laporta, Payne Durham and Luke Schoonmaker.

Not sure about Cameron Latu from Alabama. He could turn out to be something really good just to early. He is still learning the position as I believe he switched to TE from the defensive side of the ball.

Then you got some ok guy in Josh Whyle and the Mallory dude from the “U”.

One guy not in the top 10 and should have gotten a combine invite and is really underrated is TE Ben Sims from Baylor. I think he can be a late round steal. Good blocking and receiver skills.

  84. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

TE Ben Sims, 6’5 258, Baylor

2 yr full time starter at TE in the wide zone offense of TXBA. He lines up predominantly inline as a Y but will also line up occasionally at H-Back and in the slot. He has good height and weight with adequate speed and an athletic build. He is a solid athlete with good lateral quickness and agility, solid balance, adequate acceleration, explosiveness and COD with ordinary top end play speed. Exhibits solid football intelligence as he reads man/zone.

While run blocking, fires out low and quickly gets hip to hip with the OT on combo blocks against the 5T. As he peels off the combo, he effectively blocks the OLB with adequate size and AA generating movement at the POA with solid foot drive and good timing and placement in his hands. While blocking in space, uses good length and leverage to overpower ILB and DB with ordinary size and play strength. Good competitive toughness allows him to rise to the occasion in the red zone as a receiver and blocker.

THE FAU OWLS men’s basketball team just concluded their greatest season EVER by defeating Louisiana Tech on the road 76-72 in Ruston, Louisiana. This locks up the number 1 seed in the upcoming Conference USA tournament this coming week in Frisco, Texas.

Tonight’s win wraps up a 28-3 regular season, which represents the best won-lost record by ANY Division 1 program in the state of Florida’s history!! That’s quite an achievement for ANY team, let alone one that was predicted to finish FIFTH in their own division by the sportswriters in Conference USA cities in a preseason poll.

It’s likely FAU will be sent to some far-off city for their opening round game in March Madness. Currently, FAU is making arrangements for 1,000 students to be bussed to the opening round game and put up in hotels for as long as the team remains alive in the tournament!!! I think this is a TREMENDOUS GESTURE by FAU’s administration. Those lucky kids will remember this experience for AS LONG AS THEY LIVE!!

Both Jerry Palm and Joe Lunardi have forecast FAU as, roughly, a number 8 or a number 9 seed in whatever regional they are sent to. They will face another team with a similar rating in the opening round game. Should the Owls win their first round contest, they will likely face a #1 or #2 seeded team in round 2. They will certainly be the underdogs in round 2, should they advance out of the opening round.

PS; A FRIEND OF MINE corrected me on FAU having the best W-L record for a season among those Florida schools playing Division I basketball for a whole season. He reminded me that Jacksonville University once had A PERFECT SEASON going until they reached the Championship game of March Madness way back in the early 1970’s. That team featured 7’2″ center Artis Gilmore (now in the NBA Hall of Fame) and 7 foot forward Pembrook Burroughs, who went on to a career in law enforcement with the Florida Highway Patrol. I got to meet Mr. Burroughs when I hired him to do security at a local coin convention in the 1970’s.

Anyway, that Jacksonville team (nicknamed The Dolphins) lost the title game to John Wooden’s team from UCLA. Next day, a headline in the sports section of a local paper said “Dolphins Derailed From Perfect Season by UCLA!” So Jacksonville University finished, I believe, 30-1 that season.

Two years later, another Florida team nicknamed the Dolphins would attain “Absolute Perfection” in a different sport.

One I will be watching is the other Michigan TE Erick All, 6’5 255. He is faster and said to be a better blocker than Michael Mayer. Harbaugh says he is such a good athlete and blocker that he uses him as a FB often. He had to have a major surgery early last year or would have been right up there competing with Michael Mayer as TE1.

TE is one of the hardest to evaluate, but once you get the prototype of what you want, if you have the right coaches you can develop him in time

Ben Sims doesn’t have much tape out there, but I can see him as our prototype, going to take some time though to get him up to speed

Bowers is an absolute stud. If we have anywhere close to the season we all hope that we have, we have no shot at drafting him.
