Defense a priority in NFL offseason

The very first move, preceding the free agency frenzy of signing, was bringing in one of the best defensive minds in football, new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio. I believe many of us here felt that former Dolphins DC Josh Boyer was in over his head at times. Mostly, I think we felt that he was unable to adjust, to bring something other than his zero coverage blitz scheme, which to me was too all or nothing. Fangio, much like Bill Belichick in New England knows that you have to be flexible and approach each team a little differently. While the Patriots offense hasn’t been the same since Tom Brady left, the defense has been a quality defense without Brady at the helm, as high as the #2 defense in ’21, down to just out of the top 10 in ’22, at #11. I’m not saying that Fangio and Belichick run the same schemes, no, I’m saying that both of these seasoned veterans know you can do exactly the same thing against every opponent. You have to morph a little, change, and adapt to what you face each week. This is where Vic Fangio will make a tremendous difference, and that’s without giving serious accolades for assembling what could be the most talented Miami Dolphins defensive roster since OD’s “No Name Defense”.

Last year, before the season began, I thought we were a defense on the precipice of becoming a top 10 defense. Unfortunately, a multitude of injuries derailed that. Regardless of the injuries though, I still felt like our defense underperformed, especially when CB Xavien Howard wasn’t hobbled by his groin injuries, and we had acquired OLB/DE Bradley Chubb from the Broncos. We already had a formidable defensive line (despite losing Emmanuel Ogbah) of Zach Sieler, Raekwon Davis and IMO, our best defensive player in ’22, Christian Wilkins. Add to that the LB crew of Chubb, Baker, Roberts and Phillips, and there was so much potential for a team with a ferocious pass rush. It never materialized, never got off the ground. Elandon Roberts had his best season as a Miami Dolphin and yet this team missed boatloads of tackles, and was relatively toothless as far as pressure and sacks were concerned. That’s where Vic Fangio comes in. In lieu of sending numerous defensive backs to rush the passer, this team will be more reliant on the front 7 taking care of pressuring the QB. Last year’s total of 40 sacks was a dropoff of 8 sacks, and that’s after adding Bradley Chubb and Melvin Ingram to the roster.

Let’s take a look at the changes we’ve made. Despite Elandon Roberts having a standout season, Vic Fangio felt he needed an upgrade at LB. The Dolphins brought in LB David Long. Long excelled in pass coverage and was a sure tackler for the Titans. The blockbuster of course was the trade for DB Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey can play a number of different positions, so versatile in a pass crazy NFL. He can play like a LB in obvious passing situations, can play CB on the perimeter most of the time, or play either safety position, with no falloff at any of these spots. We added another sure tackler in the secondary from the Lions in DeShon Elliott. Of course we already have Safeties Jevon Holland and Brandon Jones returning, but Brandon Jones is coming off an ACL tear last season. We also re-signed coverage LB Duke Riley, and most recently, re-signed OLB and ST’s ace Andrew Van Ginkel. Our defensive roster is d-e-e-p. Last but not least, we re-signed one of my favorites, DB Nik Needham who is also coming off a tough injury to come back from, and achilles injury. This defense is absolutely stacked, we have front line talent to match up well against anyone, and then depth that could be better than any other team. Fangio has the tools to make it work here, and you’re not wrong to be expecting big things from this defense.

So what does Vic Fangio do differently than former Miami DC Josh Boyer? For one thing, as I’ve already mentioned. Fangio relies predominantly on his front 7 for pressuring the QB. He blitzes rarely, and sets up his front 7 to succeed. Probably the biggest difference is instead of burdening the secondary with man to man coverage, so often without any help from the safeties due to the constant blitzing from Josh Boyer’s defense, Fangio plays a 2 high safety zone coverage. As I’ve also mentioned, this defense changes, and it can change from a cover 4 to a cover 6 or cover 8. Cover 4, or quarters is when you have 4 defensive backs in zone coverage. Cover 6 could be adding 2 LB’s to the zone, or 2 more defensive backs and cover 8 could increase that to 8 in coverage. Fangio is excellent at disguising which defense he’s using, so it’s never obvious to the opposing offense what we’re doing on defense. Again, we have so much talent on defense, Fangio probably can’t wait to get down to business and implement the players he has available to him. Last year, not one Dolphins defender exceeded 7 sacks. SEVEN! I can’t guarantee we’re going to duplicate what the Eagles did last season, with 4 defenders reaching double digit sacks, with LB Haason Reddick leading the Eagles with 16, the others with 11 each, but I’m willing to put it on paper that we’ll have 2 in double digits, and one of them may be close to Reddick’s 16. I think Jalean Phillips is going to flourish with Fangio, and Chubb will as well.

The depth we added is so key, I’ll explain why. This year, Emmanuel Ogbah should be back healthy. He played hurt for half the season and then went out after game 9. Sieler was fantastic in his stead, but having both allows both players to get more meaningful reps, and be fresher. Adding S DeShon Elliott is not only insurance against whether Brandon Jones can be effective early or at all coming back from ACL surgery, but he’s excellent in coverage in his own right. Nik Needham will play anywhere you ask him to, and I’ve said too many times already, he’s a gamer, always. We added LB Malik Reed from the Steelers who can also rush the passer, and has had 8 sacks playing for Fangio in Denver. We have young LB Channing Tindall, a true sideline to sideline defender who should see more playing time behind Baker and Long. We also have young LB Cameron Goode who we drafted in the 7th RD last season. Bringing back AVG (Andrew Van Ginkel) was a most pleasant surprise. He’s a legit pass rusher, and ST’s playmaker. I know most of you don’t want to hear this name, but if anyone is going to wring the best out of this player, Noah Igbinoghene, it’s Vic Fangio, I’m not going to lie, I won’t be surprised if he’s an early cut either, but I do think he could be a reclamation project for Fangio. It’s nice to know we can line up Wilkins – Davis – Sieler – Chubb – Long – Baker – Phillips – Ramsey – Howard – Holland – Jones, with guys like Ogbah, AVG, Tindall, Riley, Reed, Kohou, Needham, Elliott, McKinley, Crossen, Igbinoghene etc. right behind them. Seriously people, that’s just brimming with high quality starters and depth. Can’t wait!

Steve, After watching that video of Mayer, he seems just a little above average. I didn’t see anything jump out as special/elite to me. Overrated a little IMO. I could see him falling to our range. Blocking out in space on the move, he looks like an OT trying to block a smaller quicker player. I would rather have Darnell Washington even if Mayer falls. Washington is much better blocking in space.

Steve, also, I have to thank you for posting that video. I only watched half of it then went back to the beginning to watch a ND OL who was standing out to me.

ND backup junior Center Zeke Correll (#52) starting in place of an injured Jarrett Patterson that game. Correll will be the ND starting Center this season. He held his own really well. Looks to have a solid anchor against pass rush, didn’t get pushed back. On run plays he did really well moving the DT’s around in the run game. He did miss once or twice but everyone gets beat once or twice a game.

He struggled a little early in the game but got better as it went on.

I just put him on my watch list for next draft. Unfortunately, we don’t have a 3rd or 4th next year to get someone like him without doing a player trade or trade down in the draft next year.

  24. Piggy, you were discussing C John Michael Schmitz with Randy the other day. Both CBS and GBNDR have him in the 50’s so he could be there for us.

  25. TE Darnell Washington is definitely an intriguing prospect. Big dude at 6-7 270 who can run and catch but needs work on his receiving skills. What he is good at is blocking especially in the run game. I wonder if that’s the kind of player we’re looking for.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That’s the kind of player I’m looking for. I feel the odds are better for Washington to get meaningful snaps and help the team than if we draft a LB or OL. I know Randy likes the center, but it sure as hell seems like they’re starting Eichenberg at G, and Connor Williams had a great year last year playing C playing every single snap. Why move him?

      • Schmitz is considered an interior OL so he could be guard competition and a backup center for now.

I don’t think we know yet how the OL is going to round out. Armstead, Williams and Hunt are starters. I think LG and RT is still an open competition.

    • OT Richard Gouraige could be an option for us in the 3rd round.

      • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I guess competition for Eichenberg isn’t ridiculous by any means, but it sure seems like they think he’s a starter, or want to get something out of their investment. A little less so with Austin Jackson because of Tua’s blind side. I just don’t like what we have a TE right now with Smythe and Saubert and Conner. I think Washington will end up being a dual threat TE.

      • I definitely think we want to add to the TE group. Hopefully we can add players in the 6th and 7th that can contribute and not just depend on the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

  26. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

  27. I wonder if letting Sherfield walk was because we expect Ekuanma to be in the mix. They basically red-shirted him last year and wanted him to work at all 3 WR positions. Berrios was a nice addition but we could really use some production from Ekuanma.

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

James Fragoza from PFN wasted his time doing some crazy mock with a bunch of major trades (some we know are being worked out). One of the trades, he had Lamar Jackson being traded to the Titans then Miami trading Tua to the Ravens for Ravens pick #22 in the 1st round. Miami then selects (with all the top QB’s gone) QB Hendon Hooker with that pick.

At 51 we get TE Darnell Washington, #84 OT Wanya Morris.

What is it with these guys that think Miami doesn’t want Tua? It’s a stupid obsession with these people.

Absolutely agreed that he’s an intriguing prospect. If he falls to us @ 51, he’s got to be under consideration.

  32. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

If we were to trade down and get an extra pick, a RB could be a target in the 3rd or whatever pick we get in a trade.

Tank Bigsby is a good all round back. He did only run a 4.56 at the combine though.

“He was also trusted as a blocker and has shown he can hold up against free rushers.”

    https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2023-nfl-draft-tank-bigsby-scouting-report/

    • I mentioned that yesterday as well. If we traded our 2nd to the end of the 2nd round, a 3rd would be the extra pick based on the trade value chart. Now we’d basically have three 3rds in value and this isn’t an elite draft. However… there are plenty of good prospects. That wouldn’t surprise me at all if we did that.

It would be because the guys we wanted at #51 are off the board and we don’t have that a high a grade on the rest. Clusters can be as large as 3rd or 4th round projection. Plenty of times teams like specific prospects more than others. Some teams have drop-off points.

Whatever way we find them, we need some more depth and competition at TE and on the OL.

    • I forgot to add my RB comment. Gaskin’s contract is setup for an easy cut with no cap hit. He’s on a compete to win a roster spot deal. We could definitely add a rook to challenge him.

  33. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

    https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/4-draft-prospects-overhyped-van-ness-noah-sewell-tanner-mckee-luke-musgrave/

This is how I feel about TE Luke Musgrave. From the article:

“Musgrave is a lot more supersized slot receiver than he is a tight end, even as a pure flex/move TE. His blocking wasn’t even rudimentary level; hand placement, footwork, and strength were all extraordinarily below-average.”

  34. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The other PSU cat I’m looking at is Juice Scruggs, Center.

I believe both Juice and Brenton Strange should be on our radar.

  35. We’re all down on Cedrick Wilson because he didn’t live up to his contract projection. He’s either viewed as a guy who didn’t grasp the system as well as others but he’s expected to be better this year. Or he could be a draft day trade, or after if a team doesn’t like their WR room. Maybe a 2024 conditional pick with both teams splitting the cap.

He’s kind of a wildcard right now.
Hill, Waddle, Berrios, Ezukanma, Wilson etc.?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

With the amount of money we’re spending to go ALL-IN, Wilson becomes a liability with his contract. We signed him before we realized we could land Reek Da Cheetah, so there’s that.

I’d be good with a Draft day trade.

      • Oh yeah right now he’s a fish out of water. I’m not sure what to think of him in year two. Not sure how the coaches view him this season.

Berrios is a better option as a return man and he can be that smaller quick twitch slot receiver. If Ekukanma pans out where does Wilson fit in with that contract? We might have to bite the bullet on that one with dead cap if he’s not in the 53 man plans.

    https://draftwire.usatoday.com/lists/2023-nfl-draft-sam-laporta-scouting-report/

One person’s take. I thought he was a more well-rounded TE but this says he has to get a lot better at blocking.

This is the frustration with this TE class. I do think he has really good potential though and would take him in the 3rd round.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m with the one person’s take that LaPorta needs to get a lot better at blocking. I wouldn’t touch him @ 51.

    ————–
The next George Kittle won’t be found @ 51, nor will the next Trent Williams be found @ 51 in this Draft class. Perhaps later in the Draft with more obscure names, but not @ 51.

We run a very specific style of Offense under Coach McDaniel. On the O-Line, we run an outside zone concept… and that extends to our inline TEs. Must be able to block and be fluid in footwork.

We cannot just draft a SMASHMOUTH O-Lineman or seam-threat TE like Mike Gesicki. As such, if a Defensive player jumps out of the stadium @ 51, rather than one of the TEs or O-Linemen we’ll be looking at @ 51, you take the Defensive player.

We’ll address TE and O-Line, trust… but it might not be @ 51.

    • I agree with that. If we feel we’re set at certain positions and snaps are going to be hard to come by, but those are the positions of value, trade down and target your needs. Don’t reach.

For instance edge rusher. We have Chubb, Phillips, Reed and AVG. They all have a lot of NFL games under their belt. Ogbah is more DE but he also plays as an edge in some formations. Is #51 going to jump them? I doubt it. But a team might want to trade up for that kind of prospect.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

And, you’re insinuating everyone, including you, who the best prospect is in the top 100. You nor anyone does. After the first 5 to 10 top draft picks (and even this range) it’s all a crapshoot.

This is my point at this phase of our season. Do your most homework on areas to fill holes…they’re on the O side of the ball, imo. No one in the draft on D where we are drafting is worthy at 51, imo, to take a chance or waste a pick.

If he did, I would take him at 51 then hope for OT Bergeron at 84. That would be really nice. Draft a TE at 197 and a DT/NT at 238.
        OC Michael Schmitz
        OT Matthew Bergeron
TE Camren McDonald or Brenton Strange

We have very few spots open to the 53, other than upgrades I don’t see us acquiring, sure we may find another Needham, harder though on a good roster

TE, OT, OG, RB, DT-NT and that’s about it

Interior DL backup can come from FA post June 1st as can TE, OT and OG, an RB would just be from an upgrade standpoint

I’d say, like in 2022 we won’t have anyone drafted this year as part of a regular rotation or starting spot, unless we trade up and/or take the Bama RB

I cannot wait to see Tua (and the rest of the offense) in the same offensive system for the first time for a second year in a row. Going back to freshman year college he has never had the same offense and play caller two years in a row.

We are going to see this system take off this season with nearly everyone coming back and not having to learn everything from scratch. PROGRESSION! What a concept. I am excited to see it!

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We need to solve the problem on O, that bit us in the ass at the end of last year, teams adjusting with deep LBs in coverage

I want to see the plan to fix this come to fruition, if it does everything will fall into place

What I really want to see is how the D takes that step to being top 5

No reason why we can’t have a great D with Fangio and the CBs we have, along with the overall talent

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I think exactly one team beat us with the deep dropping LBs, taking away the middle of the field and pushing everything to the edges; that was the Chargers.

I know some analysts say the Niners did it too, but they really didn’t. Yes they dropped LBs and Warner had that one pass tip, but we beat ourselves in that game, Tua was off on a number of open throws early that he usually hits.

And after the Chargers, it wasn’t really an issue in the later games; when Tua was in, he was good, except the 2nd half of the GB game when he got concussed.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I don’t know if teams didn’t try to replicate what the Chargers did (which would be weird), or if we adjusted, but it didn’t seem to be an issue.

  50. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I wonder if they have an agreement/secret handshake in place with OT Shell? Maybe Grier told him and his agent to just chill until June 1 and we want to bring him back. He knows the system so missing OTA’s won’t hurt a bit.

He was our best backup OT.

The other center I like in this draft after Schmitz is actually Ricky Stromberg from Arkansas. I wanted to draft him last year but he didn’t enter the draft.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I like the idea of drafting a C at 51, if it’s the best player available to give us insurance for Williams not getting re-signed next year and possible suring up the interior, not my first choice though

Darnell would be the only TE I’d take at 51 realistically

What if Darnell, Schmitz and Jahmyr are all sitting there when we’re on the clock at 51?

Schmitz would be my 3rd choice, I’d have to say Darnell would be my first

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      Stromberg gets some great push.

      Does he fit our system?

  52. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

    I think everything is related

With our current players, we can have more production (yards) from our running game, if the D gets off the field more often

Then with more attention on the running game the LBs won’t be able to just drop back in the deep zones allowing our passing game to continue as it did early in the season

Hurts had a great season and looked unstoppable, he had lots of help from the D and running game though

“Even without strong evidence of an advantage, the council has scrutinized the performance of athletes such as South African runner Caster Semenya, the world’s fastest woman in the 800 meters,” NPR reported.

Mike McDaniel: I can see a hunger in Tua Tagovailoa that I’m excited to watch play out
Posted by Myles Simmons on March 27, 2023, 9:10 AM EDT

The Dolphins displayed their level of commitment to Tua Tagovailoa by announcing that they’ve picked up the quarterback’s fifth-year option earlier this month.

As the offseason continues, head coach Mike McDaniel said over the weekend that Tagovailoa is doing well after finishing the season in the concussion protocol.

“He’s doing great,” McDaniel told NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero at the league’s annual meeting. “He’s had a really good offseason with his family and training and positioning himself to feel good moving forward. He’s very healthy, vibrant, and I can see a hunger in him that I’m excited to watch play out.”

Tagovailoa had his best season as a pro in his first year with McDaniel. The quarterback completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 3,548 yards with 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions in 13 games. He led the league at 8.9 yards per attempt, 13.7 yards per completion, and a 105.5 passer rating.

Tagovailoa, 25, impressed McDaniel with what he was able to accomplish.

“He’s a younger player and he’s very honest and candid. But it also gives me a barometer,” McDaniel said. “He was doing a lot, he’s got a lot of room to grow, let’s just say that. He did an unbelievable job being able to lead an offense in year one. That’s a new language. This is his first year where he’s going to have continued offense, play caller, and position coach.”

With the moves Miami has made so far, if Tagovailoa can stay healthy in 2023, the club should be in a position to contend in the AFC>

    • The science of projecting prospects has one major flaw. You can’t really define a person’s heart and desire until you have them on your team and see it. Zach Thomas is one of the best examples.

XFL seems to spot the ball better, instant replay is done in the booth, so the guy (ex nfl ref Blandino) has no emotion in it, and they don’t seem to play favorites, since it’s too early in their history

    NFL should take notice

  73. Even though our defense will be a new system I’m not worried because most of Fangio’s concepts are common schemes. It’s more about players being cerebral with the game plan and play calls within the game. You still have to be a good fundamental player at your position. Vic doesn’t run anything too exotic but he mixes it up.

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Disguises it well too from what I understand….hope so

    • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

According to Malik in the article, Fangio puts players in the right position to be successful….at least for him.

    • Vic is a good teacher, a no-nonsense old school type of coach who doesn’t tolerate a lack of fundamentals.

His disguises are showing Cover 2, flip to man or something else pre-snap. He plays chess with opposing offenses. I don’t think we’ll see too many of the Amoeba Cover 0 blitz schemes, but a 5th rusher at times. He likes to keep big play opportunities to a minimum and force teams to use a lot of plays banking on mistakes and turnovers. If the personnel is really good and I think we have that, it’s even tougher.
