O-line or Uh-Oh-line?

If there’s one thing most Dolphins fans can agree on, it’s the fact that QB1 Tua Tagovailoa needs to stay healthy this season for the Dolphins to make the playoffs and more. That puts a lot of pressure on the offensive line, the protectors of one Tua Tagovailoa. An unfortunate development is last year’s center Connor Williams is now holding out and missed the last OTA’s. While Williams struggled all season long with high snaps, he played every single snap, and was a huge blocking upgrade both run blocking and pass protecting. In his stead in the last OTA’s, Liam Eichenberg took all the work at C and from all reports, looked good doing so. However this shakes out, we need to have our best 5 guys out there, and whether Williams plays OC or OG, we need him on the field. We already have question marks at LT, such as “How many games can Terron Armstead play, and play healthy? Detractors are everywhere when it comes to #74 Liam Eichenberg, wherever he plays on the line, and #73 Austin Jackson.

Let’s get back to Williams. He signed a 2YR/$14.035M contract just last season, and already he’s holding out? I want him to play, but I can say there’s going to be a lot of cap issues if we want to keep all our good players, and DL Christian Wilkins should be the first guy to get a contract extension. Williams played one season here and while I appreciate he played the entire season, that’s kind of what’s expected. Imagine if QB Tua Tagovailoa has the season we all hope for, what is it going to cost to keep him in a Miami Dolphins uniform? Bills DT Ed Oliver recently signed a 4YR/$68M contract. NYG DL Dexter Lawrence signed a 4YR/$87.5M deal. If Wilkins gets a contract somewhere in that neighborhood, and he deserves to, it’s going to be a challenge to pay everyone that needs to get paid. Granted, we did opt for Tua Tagovailoas’s 5th year option earlier this year which will pay him $23.7M. Still a bargain if he plays well and for an entire season or even the greater majority. I don’t know what Connor Williams demands are, if he wants an extension, or a significant raise and extension, but the latter may not necessarily be feasible.

If we can for a moment assume that Connor Williams plays under his current contract, or that we give him another couple of years with a modest increase, the O-line should be like this . . .

LT Terron Armstead – LG Liam Eichenberg – OC Connor Williams – RG Robert Hunt – RT Austin Jackson

Of course, all this is subject to change, even if Williams comes back. We may opt to play Eichenberg at C, and have Williams at LG, and then the RT spot may be up for grabs if Austin Jackson falters. We did bring in former Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn and former Jets OT Cedric Ogbuehi, both former 1st RD picks for insurance and competition. I know Hulk wants more, but realistically, more is not going to happen. Next year we can draft O-line early if necessary, and I understand Hulk thinks it’s necessary. RT Austin Jackson came into camp in great shape, a mans body so to speak. It’s important to keep in mind that Jackson was drafted as a raw rookie of 20 years old, and is still only 23 years old today. Perhaps it’s easy to say that he was a 1st RD reach, but that shouldn’t exclude him from being given an opportunity to win the starting RT spot. The LT spot will be one to keep an eye on, because it’s “when” Armstead is OUT, not “if. Terron Armstead has yet to complete and entire season of NFL play in his entire 10 year career. So Wynn, Ogbuehi or someone else will be forced into action at LT.

The Dalvin Cook to Miami narrative still lives in the minds of some, not this writer. We have a good mix of RB’s in our stable at the moment, lots of explosiveness. As I have previously mentioned, if we’re going to bring in a RB, let it be Leonard Fournette, who is a grinder, a reliable short yardage runner who has excellent receiving skills. RB by committee is the new norm, and Mostert, Wilson, Achane and either Ahmed or Gaskin is fine with me. If they want add a hammer, Fournette is the guy, we already have HR hitters with Mostert and Achane. I know Achane hasn’t played in the NFL yet, but RB is one position where talent translates very quickly to the NFL game. While A-Chain may not be the bellcow back, it’s just not necessary or even sensible. We already have backs and will probably carry 4 on the 53, and we will use them all. I won’t scream if we sign Cook, I just feel comfortable with what we got.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

I strongly disagree with 2 things

    1) We need Tua to stay healthy to make the playoffs, I agree with and more

    2) LT, I think Wynn will slide in nicely there, if Armstead goes down

I’m going on record to say Armstead plays all 17, kind of goes with Murphy’s Law, now that we have a capable backup

But in any event well thought out article Mike

What does the Grier connection with his father have to do with a trade for Wilson? Everyone knows who he is, his contract and 2022 performance.

If you were a GM why would you trade for him? Trent Sherfield and River Cracraft beat Wilson out for playing time.

I think there is a better chance we release him because he didn’t make the final 53 than trading him. Yes eating the dead cap and moving on.
    ————-
Personally, I think Wilson got lost in the shuffle after trading for Tyreek. And seriously, we and 31 other teams know that Wilson doesn’t suck.

At any rate, I’m just speculating on ‘what ifs’ during these doldrums. Perhaps there could be a potential landing spot for Wilson after all… especially after a few starters from other teams blow out their ACLs — unfortunately, but as usual — after camp begins.

IF we can free up even $3.5M (half of Wilson’s contract), that helps us to re-sign the BIG MAN Christian Wilkins.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re going to re-sign Wilkins regardless of what goes on with Wilson.

I don’t see a team trading forWilson that gives us much value. Maybe we eat 2/3 of the contract and get a conditional late round 2024 pick.

    Ramsey isn’t kidding either.

    RAMSEY’S TRACK ACHIEVEMENTS
In 2014 Ramsey and backup quarterback John Franklin II joined Dentarius Locke and James Harris on Florida State’s 4×100-meter relay team that won the ACC Outdoor title in 40.19 seconds.

His long jump of 25 feet (7.62 meters) earned him third place, matching the third place he also earned at the ACC Indoors.

In May 2015, Ramsey won the ACC Long Jump Championship with a leap of 26′ 1.5″ (7.96m).

  32. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

Ramsey had a long jump of 26 feet, 1 3/4 inches, which was the third-best in Florida State history at the time. So his performance in college was nothing short of impressive, and Ramsey claims most of his long jumping was done strictly off athleticism.

So those who think the 28-year-old has lost a step, or can’t move like he once did might need to reconsider that stance.

The Dolphins are hoping Ramsey and Howard will become the best cornerback duo in the NFL playing in a Vic Fangio scheme, which is built on creating turnovers.

As for the hoops dreams, Dolphins fans shouldn’t be too concerned.

“[I’m just] doing conditioning in these runs [for real],” Ramsey said

3 underrated moves the Miami Dolphins made in 2023 offseason
By Brian Miller | 2:30 PM EDT

The Miami Dolphins made some big moves during the 2023 off-season but these three should have just as big of an impact on the season.

For many in the media and the fans of the Dolphins, the two biggest moves made by the team were the hiring of Vic Fangio and the trade for Jalen Ramsey.

Miami entered the 2023 off-season with less money to spend than the last couple of years and they didn’t have trade options to make bigger splashes in the draft. Still, they made some moves that will have huge impacts on the season that went under the radar but will surface soon when training camp arrives.

Braxton Berrios could make the biggest impact on the Dolphins offense and will on special teams.

Berrios is the forgotten signing Miami made to a crowded and relatively good WR unit. Primarily a return man with the Jets, Berrios will likely see plenty of slot opportunities within the Dolphins offense now that Mike Gesicki is gone.

The Dolphins have a very good WR unit but there is plenty of room for the quick and shifty Berrios who could prove to be Tua Tagovailoa’s best outlet option of 2023. His quick and decisive running after the catch will only further help exploit defenses that can’t use safety help with the slot or RBs out of the backfield.

While the Miami Dolphins may have one of the weaker TE units in the AFC East, Eric Saubert should emerge as a big threat.

Saubert has NFL experience but he doesn’t have to end experience. With the Dolphins he should see considerable time on the field both in pass protection and as a receiver. He is the primary replacement for Mike Gesicki.

Saubert isn’t the premium pass catcher that Gesicki is but he runs better routes and can block a lot better as well. As a result, he should see more snap counts than Gesicki did under McDaniel because Miami can use him in multiple ways.

When fans think of the Dolphins off-season, Saubert is often overlooked, but shouldn’t be.

David Long, Jr. could be the piece Miami needed the most on defense.

David Long, Jr. was added on a one-year deal but that should change by mid-season when the Dolphins have to start looking at next year’s contracts. Long by then should have proven he deserves to stick around.

In Tennessee, Long was only held back by his health, something I don’t expect to be a big problem in Miami. He is versatile, quick to the ball, and most importantly is a tough physical linebacker that Miami needed.

If Long can work his way into the starting rotation, the Dolphins will have a formidable defense at one of it’s weaker spots from the last several years. It will be interesting considering that Fangio’s defense relies on the position.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Berrios should be platooned into WR3

Between Berrios, Chosen, EZ and Wilson we have 4 guys with different skills

You can make a case for all 4 to get significant PT

I think week to week, if someone doesn’t stand out in camp, we use the best matchup as the first option, if he isn’t getting it done, go to option 2

I hope someone unanimously takes the reigns, but hard to do better than this 4-headed monster, if all play as expected

I think Berrios and Ezukanma could make this offense almost impossible to stop with Hill and Waddle drawing so much attention.

I can see Berrios’ game going to another level learning from Welker. And we know Welker pounded the table for Ezukanma.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Saubert can carve out a nice little role for himself as a blocker/3rd down receiver

He has no pressure and anything he catches is a bonus

Having no pressure means Fins aren’t counting on him to have to play great

IDK why it’s an underrated move, it’s more of a lower ceiling higher floor type of move, we pretty much know what he’s going to provide

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Long on the other hand, if he doesn’t play up to expectation or is off the field too often it’s going to be a problem

He was brought in to start and be that hammer LB, that isn’t a liability in coverage

Not sure why he’s an underrated signing

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I think we’re going to see a lot of 6 man protections with our TEs. They’ll catch some passes here and there because teams will sleep on them.

Establishing a solid running game will open up so many mismatches.

Training camp preview: Why there may be no home for Cedrick Wilson, Jr.
By Brian Miller | 10:00 AM EDT

On July 18th, Miami Dolphins rookies will report to training camp followed by veterans on the 25th. One question going in that will be answered soon is where does Cedrick Wilson, Jr. fit into the plans?

2023 Miami Dolphins training camp preview – the Wide Receiver room.

Miami fans know that four spots are locked up barring injury. Those four belong to Jaylen Waddle, Tyreek Hill, Erik Ezukanma, and Braxton Berrios. There are six spots likely to be had.

Wilson should be a player that normally would be penciled in as an absolute but his salary is high and his play last year was not what the Dolphins were hoping for and if they were fine with it, then that is a problem.

For Wilson, however, his biggest challenge may be the other players that are on the roster with him.

Chosen Anderson or is it Robbie Chosen or Anderson Chosen? The reality is Chosen has a good shot at making this roster. He comes with a far lesser contract, has good speed, and is trying to prove he can still play. Chosen wants to show that last year was not who he is.

Chosen only takes up one of the six spots and that means Wilson will have to compete against River Cracraft and a slew of relatively unknowns. Cracraft shouldn’t be competition but he is. Last year he showed value at the position and again, is much cheaper than Wilson.

In the end, Wilson is likely to make the team despite his salary. The Dolphins don’t get much in relief from cutting him and his contract this year isn’t one another team will pick up, it hovers around $8 million on the season.

The Dolphins, I predict will enter the season with six WRs and despite a lot of reasons why he shouldn’t, Wilson will be on the roster but a trade is always possible as camp moves forward and the Dolphins may have to eat more of the contract to get it done.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The best case scenario is Wilson performs well for us and then see if he still fits next year when he’s an easy release.

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Performs good enough, that we can trade him at the deadline

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Maybe or he just makes our WR room really deep.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

You’ve been saying all along we’re stuck with him…we don’t need him, it’s really on him. Cutting him is an option, too.

      • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

He’s a good problem to have for a change

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’ve been saying he’s not tradable at least at this time. I liked when we signed him but he fell down the depth chart. He has ability.

Here Are the Areas That Mike McDaniel Needs to Improve in Year Two with the Miami Dolphins

He’s off to a good start but needs to make strides in his sophomore campaign.

    By George Forder@GeorgeForder3 Jul 4, 2023, 11:30am EDT

Mike McDaniel has burst onto the NFL scene and will hope to lead the Miami Dolphins into the postseason for the second time in as many seasons as their head coach.

I’ll be honest with you, I love his coaching. I do. I’m a Mike McDaniel fan. For my money, I don’t know if it gets any better than when he cracks a good press conference joke or calls a play-action shot to Tyreek Hill (a little Office Space reference for you cool cats out there).

I’ll be serious now that I found a way to incorporate that into my article. I have been a big supporter of McDaniel since the day they hired him. He’s intelligent and highly motivated to succeed… in my experience, these are the kinds of people you bet on. His style is unique and the way he interacts with players and the media is different from what we have come to expect of head coaches.

His belief in Tua Tagovailoa helped to validate much of what I saw in his film from years one and two. He identified Tua’s strengths (accuracy to all parts of the field and a lightning-quick release) and catered the offense to those strengths. It propelled Tua into the conversation as a top-10 quarterback in the NFL and helped lead Miami to their first playoff birth since 2016.

What to Fix in Year Two

Like anything in life, being a great NFL head coach means making continual incremental progress- if you’re stagnant that means you’re falling behind the competition. With that in mind, we need to ask what positive changes can Mike McDaniel make to lead the Miami Dolphins to an even more successful 2023 campaign.

    Lean on the Running Game

Before any analytics folks get up in arms, I’m not advocating for the Miami Dolphins to become a run-heavy team. In fact, they should continue to pass the ball for at least 60% of their offensive snaps. When you have two of the best receivers and one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the NFL, that isn’t a tough decision to make.

With that said, problems begin to arise when your offense is too one-dimensional. There was a stretch of contests where Tua Tagovailoa just didn’t miss throws. From week 8 (Detroit) to week 12 (Houston), Tagovailoa completed 72% of his passes with 13 touchdowns and no interceptions (a 134.17 QB rating). For much of that time (outside of the Browns game), the running game was an afterthought-Tagovailoa was the offense.

When the Dolphins came up against more capable defenses, that one-dimensional nature became a problem. In the following two-game stretch, Miami averaged 13.5 rush attempts per game and dropped back-to-back contests against the LA Chargers and San Francisco 49ers. Tagovailoa wasn’t quite as sharp as he had been and the offense had nothing to fall back on.

No one should be hoping they transform into the Baltimore Ravens overnight, but their 22.8 rushing attempts per game (second fewest in the NFL) is unbalanced and puts too much on a young quarterback still in the process of mastering the offense.

    Get Plays in Quicker

This is one that every Miami Dolphins fan has a right to be frustrated with. The constant motion and adjustments made by McDaniel’s offense (pre-snap) will always lead to fewer seconds on the play clock at the time of the snap-that is understandable. Breaking the huddle with fewer than ten seconds on the play clock is on the play-caller though.

The Dolphins tied for the 3rd most delay-of-game penalties in the NFL for 2022 and too often the offense was rushing to get to the line of scrimmage and get the football snapped. It cost them dearly in the Wildcard contest against the Bills. What would have been a 4th & 1 (65.5% conversion rate) with 2:34 on the game clock turned into a 4 & 6 (43.1% conversion rate). With Miami only being down by a field goal, they had the opportunity to take a lead and win the game on this drive. Instead, they failed to convert and lost by three points to the Buffalo Bills (gross).

    Take Fewer Homerun Shots

We all know the narrative that was around Tua Tagovailoa going into the 2022 season… he “can’t throw the deep ball.” Mike McDaniel did his best job to send that thing into orbit and nuke it. Tua Tagovailoa led the NFL in average depth of target (ADOT) and completion percentage on deep (20+ yards) passes. He had the 4th most deep passing yards in the NFL (while missing several games) and was PFF’s 4th highest graded passer on deep throws (just ahead of Patrick Mahomes).

While it’s obvious that the narrative is completely nonsensical (even if clueless casuals will hold onto it), there were times when McDaniel went to the well too often. Tua Tagovailoa is a rhythm passer and it can be difficult to get into a rhythm when you’re constantly going for the long ball. This was most evident in the Chargers game, where he posted his highest ADOT figure for a full game all season.

Instead of utilizing Tagovailoa’s fast release and elite short accuracy (or a running game) to get the offense into a rhythm, they took deep shot after deep shot. It led to one of Tua’s worst days as a pro and McDaniel’s worst offensive performance of the season. We unfortunately only got to see Tua play two more games (with mixed results) on the season before concussion problems shut him down for the year.

    Year Two could be Special

It’s difficult to have a better rookie year as an NFL head coach than McDaniel did. He led the Miami Dolphins to a playoff birth and has earned the respect and admiration of folks around the league (including the media). If McDaniel can clean up some of these first-year struggles we could see a balanced, efficient, and absolutely unstoppable offense in year two. Combine that with a Vic Fangio-led defense, and the Dolphins might finally be back in title contention.

    …barring injury…I agree…lol.

I, also, agree McDaniel’s growth as noted above, could help “protect” Tua. It really could be special.

Dolphins’ 2023 training camp preview: RG Robert Hunt

The Miami Dolphins have wrapped up their rookie minicamp, organized team activities and mandatory minicamps and will return to the Baptist Health Training Complex near the end of July to prepare for the 2023 regular season.

Before that, we’ll be going through the majority of Miami’s roster to preview their background, projected role and bottom line with the team entering training camp.

After looking at some quarterbacks, running backs, six receivers, a trio of tight ends and the starting left tackle, we’ll move on to another big man up front – right guard Robert Hunt.

    General information

    Name: Robert Hunt
    Position: OG
    Height: 6-foot-6
    Weight: 335 pounds
    Age: 26
    College: Louisiana-Lafayette
    Free Agent Year: 2024

    Background

Miami drafted Hunt in the second round of the 2020 NFL draft after a five-year collegiate career at Louisiana. Hunt began his NFL career at right tackle, but in 2021, he moved inside and flourished at guard, as he played 34 games there over the last two seasons (with a few snaps at tackle due to injuries to his teammates).

    Expected Role

Miami has three solidified positions on the offensive line, and Hunt’s spot at right guard is one of them. He does have the ability to kick out to tackle if necessary, but the Dolphins should let him do his thing on the interior.

    Bottom Line

Hunt’s entering a contract year, and he’s been Miami’s most consistent offensive lineman despite constant changes to the coaching staff and scheme. Unless he’s injured, he’ll be the team’s starting right guard come Week 1, and if he plays the way he has the past two seasons, someone will pay him big money, and Dolphins fans are hoping it’s their team.

  84. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The Dolphins need another pure speed deep threat with enough height to win 50/50 balls deep.
They also need at least 2 smash-mouth enforcers at TE with enough hands talent to threaten the LBs.
They also need a true slot chain-mover with enough phone booth quicks to catch the 4 yarders and enough juke moves to get YACs.
They also need another RB with breakaway speed to spell Mostert over a 20 game season.
McDaniel would also benefit from a DC that schemes turnover DB work behind a DL pass rush.
And finally we need a savvy vet CB to replace Byron Jones who isn’t a grabby UDFA level rookie .

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That’s a lot to ask of Grier, but if he can get all that done and maybe find some better quality back-up OL and 2 or 3 vicious tacklers at LB and Safety, we can go to the SB.
