O-line or Uh-Oh-line?

If there’s one thing most Dolphins fans can agree on, it’s the fact that QB1 Tua Tagovailoa needs to stay healthy this season for the Dolphins to make the playoffs and more. That puts a lot of pressure on the offensive line, the protectors of one Tua Tagovailoa. An unfortunate development is last year’s center Connor Williams is now holding out and missed the last OTA’s. While Williams struggled all season long with high snaps, he played every single snap, and was a huge blocking upgrade both run blocking and pass protecting. In his stead in the last OTA’s, Liam Eichenberg took all the work at C and from all reports, looked good doing so. However this shakes out, we need to have our best 5 guys out there, and whether Williams plays OC or OG, we need him on the field. We already have question marks at LT, such as “How many games can Terron Armstead play, and play healthy? Detractors are everywhere when it comes to #74 Liam Eichenberg, wherever he plays on the line, and #73 Austin Jackson.

Let’s get back to Williams. He signed a 2YR/$14.035M contract just last season, and already he’s holding out? I want him to play, but I can say there’s going to be a lot of cap issues if we want to keep all our good players, and DL Christian Wilkins should be the first guy to get a contract extension. Williams played one season here and while I appreciate he played the entire season, that’s kind of what’s expected. Imagine if QB Tua Tagovailoa has the season we all hope for, what is it going to cost to keep him in a Miami Dolphins uniform? Bills DT Ed Oliver recently signed a 4YR/$68M contract. NYG DL Dexter Lawrence signed a 4YR/$87.5M deal. If Wilkins gets a contract somewhere in that neighborhood, and he deserves to, it’s going to be a challenge to pay everyone that needs to get paid. Granted, we did opt for Tua Tagovailoas’s 5th year option earlier this year which will pay him $23.7M. Still a bargain if he plays well and for an entire season or even the greater majority. I don’t know what Connor Williams demands are, if he wants an extension, or a significant raise and extension, but the latter may not necessarily be feasible.

If we can for a moment assume that Connor Williams plays under his current contract, or that we give him another couple of years with a modest increase, the O-line should be like this . . .

LT Terron Armstead – LG Liam Eichenberg – OC Connor Williams – RG Robert Hunt – RT Austin Jackson

Of course, all this is subject to change, even if Williams comes back. We may opt to play Eichenberg at C, and have Williams at LG, and then the RT spot may be up for grabs if Austin Jackson falters. We did bring in former Patriots OT Isaiah Wynn and former Jets OT Cedric Ogbuehi, both former 1st RD picks for insurance and competition. I know Hulk wants more, but realistically, more is not going to happen. Next year we can draft O-line early if necessary, and I understand Hulk thinks it’s necessary. RT Austin Jackson came into camp in great shape, a mans body so to speak. It’s important to keep in mind that Jackson was drafted as a raw rookie of 20 years old, and is still only 23 years old today. Perhaps it’s easy to say that he was a 1st RD reach, but that shouldn’t exclude him from being given an opportunity to win the starting RT spot. The LT spot will be one to keep an eye on, because it’s “when” Armstead is OUT, not “if. Terron Armstead has yet to complete and entire season of NFL play in his entire 10 year career. So Wynn, Ogbuehi or someone else will be forced into action at LT.

The Dalvin Cook to Miami narrative still lives in the minds of some, not this writer. We have a good mix of RB’s in our stable at the moment, lots of explosiveness. As I have previously mentioned, if we’re going to bring in a RB, let it be Leonard Fournette, who is a grinder, a reliable short yardage runner who has excellent receiving skills. RB by committee is the new norm, and Mostert, Wilson, Achane and either Ahmed or Gaskin is fine with me. If they want add a hammer, Fournette is the guy, we already have HR hitters with Mostert and Achane. I know Achane hasn’t played in the NFL yet, but RB is one position where talent translates very quickly to the NFL game. While A-Chain may not be the bellcow back, it’s just not necessary or even sensible. We already have backs and will probably carry 4 on the 53, and we will use them all. I won’t scream if we sign Cook, I just feel comfortable with what we got.

GO DOLPHINS!!!

HOW DOES LAS VEGAS view the upcoming NFL season?
According to ESPN, Kansas City is the betting favorite, with Philly and San Francisco closely behind. No surprises there.

Further down the board, the Dolphins come in at 25-1, tied with Detroit, Jacksonville and the Chargers. The brutal truth is that very few people see Miami as a serious contender for the next Lombardi Trophy.

I’d think that at least a few on this board would be IN at 25-1 odds. But I wouldn’t touch it with a 10 foot pole. Last season I did OK by merely betting the Phins to have a winning season (even though I had to sweat it out down to the FINAL PLAY of the Jets game in Miami).

After the 3 preseason games have been played, I MAY bet on Miami to win at least 9 games again. But, alas, Miami’s inability to win a single playoff game THIS CENTURY will remain intact. As long as the team owner is NOT committed to upgrading the O-Line, the franchise will continue to be winless in the Playoffs . And that’s based on performance, not KOOL-AID!

Armstead, Williams and Hunt are the core of the OL. LG and RT are the open positions. We shall see.

Don’t sleep on Dan Feeney with a lot of starting experience at guard. We didn’t sign him because he wasn’t a good fit.

Austin Jackson locking down RT is our utopia. LOL

  12. randydolfan1947's avatar randydolfan1947 says:

TIM; I AGREE that health is the key to this O-Line. And Armstead has proven that he can NOT be counted on for a major portion of the football season. Frankly, I doubt he’ll be healthy for more than half of Miami’s schedule based on his performance last season. And now he’s a year older.

As for the rest of our O-Line, they are, for the most part, a collection of under achievers. There’s NOT a likely All-Pro performer in the lot. So I expect Tua will be running for his life on way too many plays to be effective. And this means yet another season without a playoff win.

Worst of all, Ross and the Front Office have shown no inclination to fix the problem with draft choices in the first two rounds. Until proven otherwise, I say the future is bleak.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      I understand your concern.
But every team has its weakest position group.

We have 3 first round draft choices in the OL room.
      Jackson, Wynn, and Ogbuehi
      And 3 second round picks.
      Eichenberg, Hunt, and Williams
Plus All pro Armstead from round 3.
We have an Alabama national champion who blocked for Tua
(Cotton) and Feeney who has started 64 games and appeared in 96 in 6 years for backups.

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        I’m confused…lol.

        Timing
The key to a successful steal of 1st base is timing. The runner must time their steal attempt perfectly so that they can make it to 1st base before the pitcher can throw the ball. This requires a great deal of focus and concentration, as the runner needs to be aware of the pitcher’s movements and anticipate when they will release the ball.

        _______<

        YET…

      • Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

        Stealing
Firstly, let’s take a look at the rules of baseball regarding stealing. According to the MLB’s official rule book, runners are allowed to steal bases, but only after the ball has been hit by the batter. This means that if the runner attempts to steal before the ball is put into play, they will be called out.

Furthermore, the rulebook states that a runner is only allowed to advance to the next base once the pitcher has released the ball. This means that a runner cannot attempt to steal 1st base until the pitcher has thrown the ball.

Looking ahead, according to OvertheCap.com, the Dolphins as it stands today will be over the cap by around $32 million but that is based on players that are on any contract length and does not take into consideration players that will not be on the 2024 roster.

He doesn’t take into consideration we’ll need to add players, that can actually play after releasing those not likely to make the team

I compare it to FB, and think we can get the same good production

On any given play we could have up to 3 TEs/FB on the field, and get the expected result/production on 75-90% of the time

If we can get that same expected result/production from the rest of the O we’ll have the best O in the league

I was excited for this season because it is the first season in a long long time that we will have the same offensive system and language in place two years in a row. I think that can only lead to better execution with better knowledge of the system and quicker decisions based on that knowledge (not just from the QB but from all the players)
Then we went and changed our Defensive system. (Which may be for the better, still to be seen as Fangio has ran top 10 defenses in HALF of his seasons. (Strangely enough the other have is MOSTLY bottom half results to temper your expectations)

I get the positive feelings but I’m just afraid of the let down again. Sophomore slump on offense, new install on defense, being a Dolphins fan in general…you know.

How many seasons have you said “this year is different”? Last year was different and we still only won 9 games to SNEAK into the playoffs. It seems like no one ever gets in in the AFC with only 9 wins. We got “lucky” last year. I can’t wait until I don’t have this feeling anymore.

I hate to base anything on Tua’s health, but until he plays a full season it will be on everyone’s mind

Last year he seemed clueless, after getting rid of the ball or getting sacked, as for protecting his body

Pretty sure he’ll protect himself better this year and won’t have an injury, that costs him games

With that out of the way, I’m going to assume he finishes 15+ games, so I can see the O being more consistent this year

I don’t expect to see the 300+ combined yard games between Hill and Waddle, or the bad O games during the losing streaks

I expect a harder to stop, more balanced O, so less targets for Hill and Waddle, more targets for the secondary receivers and backs and more rushing attempts

Wanna double Hill and Waddle too often the other guys will beat you, we didn’t have enough other guys last year

If they’re 85%+ of their best this D will be top 10

Chubb and Phillips were really good last year, but in that D they didn’t have the stats, this year playing at the same level the stats will be 10+ sacks each

Long’s health could be a factor, otherwise the rest of the front 7 is top 10 worthy

At S and the rest of the CBs we’re deeper, than ever

Fangio may have had some Ds, that weren’t very good, but I’d bet the ones with this much talent were all top 10

I’m not basing this on White, it’s based on Skylar taking the next step

He has something in common with the best QBs in the NFL currently, that’s his pocket movement/ability to extend plays, which is top trait of theirs

Skylar needs to improve his accuracy, timing and reading a D, when/if he does that the SKY(lar) is the limit😁

As good and refreshing as MysticMac was in year 1, year 2 is his big audition for me. If we don’t successfully mix up the run with the pass to produce more offensive balance, thereby keeping Ds off balance, the Karate Kid is going to get his head ripped off and our season is a bust again. Of course there are many other things that can derail our season, but that’s the biggest red flag in my book. To try to keep one step ahead of the pack, we also have to be able to shapeshift in-season too, which also sits at coach’s door. Big year for the head honcho.

There’s other ways to keep the pressure off of Tua, but let’s hope running more is taken seriously

If we have injuries turned off in Madden Football, YES.

If we suffer a key injury or two, it could derail our entire season… and we WILL suffer injuries. The good news is I like our depth now more than ever before this decade.

Here are a few key injuries that could derail us…

    1) Tua: huge drop off to Mike White or Skylar
    2) Mostert and/or Wilson: I don’t think we’ve got legit starters beyond them, and Achane is a rook. Both Mostert and Wilson are very injury prone.
    3) Armstead: if our depth is good enough, we’ll be alright if Armstead misses a few games. But if he misses serious time, ugh.
    4) Wilkins: he’s the glue of our Defense and I don’t like the depth behind him. If he goes down for any length of time, we’re in trouble on Defense.

    Offensive solution: sign Dalvin Cook
Defensive solution: sign one of either Shelby Harris, Akiem Hicks, or Chris Wormley.

Lol. That’s a tough question. I don’t think I’m your typical West Virginian. I like that he’s generally moderate and specifically he opposed Biden’s gazillion dollar spending plan-doesn’t go along with the party line. Bipartisan. I much prefer him over his potential opponents for the next Senate election if he runs again. Speculation he might retire or make a White House run. I doubt he’d do that, would have to be as an independent and not likely to win that way. I think he’s smarter than that.

I agree – he’s shown he’s a top QB. Health is the only concern and it’s really just a question of a long term commitment and money IMO
