As we discussed last week, one of huge offseason acquisitions will be missing lots of playing time, and now it’s relatively official that CB Jalen Ramsey should be out at least until December. The Dolphins immediately picked up veteran CB, former NY Giant, NO Saint, Carolina Panther and Cincinnati Bengal CB Eli Apple. Self proclaimed as “The Silent Assassin”, it’s not clear who the victims are, opposing WR’s or his own team. Over his 7 year career with 4 different teams as a former 1st RD pick in 2016 (#10) to the NY Giants, he’s done a lot of both.
Even more recently, The Dolphins waived FB John Lovett and signed former Detroit Lion and also former Pittsburgh Mauler of USFL. In 2021, Gilbert played in 8 games for the Detroit Lions and then spent 2022 on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad. In 2023, in the USFL, Gilbert logged 33 tackles, and the led the USFL with 4 INT’s. After all, he is the cousin of former NY Jet Darrelle Revis. “Gilbert Island” anyone? So what does our depth chart look like at CB? Who starts opposite LCB Xavien Howard is up for grabs. Veteran Eli Apple has played most of his career at LCB, and rookie 2nd RD pick CB Cam Smith, who by the way, at least as far as early returns go, looks fantastic, is listed as 2nd on the depth chart at LCB. Keion Crossen, Justin Bethel and new pickup Mark Gilbert are all RCB’s. Noah Igbinoghene is also listed as depth on the left side. Someone is going to have to change or someone else is going to have to step up and take it.
Just an observation, I was looking at training camp pics, which are available on the official Miami Dolphins website, and I think blocking TE Durham Smythe looks quite a bit on the slender side. To be fair, no one would mistake SF 49ers TE George Kittle with a LB either, so probably much ado about nothing. Maybe TE’s Eric Saubert and Tyler Kroft will do more of the blocking chores in the run game. Also, it’s not the size of the dog in a fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.
It will be interesting to see how things develop at CB. I love Kader Kohou, does he make the jump to starting outside CB? Do they run with the veteran Apple? Does Gilbert leapfrog everyone after a nice season in the USFL? There are often times when you need at least 3 CB’s on the field, and sometimes more. Kohou, Needham and Trill Williams are all mostly on the inside, but one of them may just have to make the move to the outside. Last year our secondary was in a shambles. Byron Jones never played a snap, and Xavien Howard was bothered by groin injuries most of the first half of the season. Iggy didn’t show up, but Kader Kohou made a nice splash. We could have been special with Jalen Ramsey, now I think most of us would just be happy with adequate if or until Ramsey is healthy.
GO DOLPHINS!!!!

Thank you, Mike E.
And Vic agrees with you, we have plenty of holes on D, and little depth.
Hopefully those holes are addressed before it’s too late. My pleasure Krishna!
Nice write, Mike! I don’t think Smythe ever looked very thick or big. He’s just a good football player at what he does.
The secondary is definitely an interesting group to see how it pans out.
Ramsey off of crutches and wearing just a compression sleeve is very encouraging.
Tim – you might be right about Smythe. I was just surprised at how not thick he looked
One of the reporters commented that he was shredded.
Great write up Mike. Thank you.
Do any of you all guys remember the TV show Soap? The end of MikeE’s article reminded me of the way that show used to end every week.
Will Burt have a nervous breakdown? Will Danny try to kill Burt? Tune in next time …
LOL, YES! I remember Soap.

Miami is experimenting with moving Emmanuel Ogbah to outside linebacker, and that decision – and his practices – could have a domino effect on the defense.
————-
??????
Some feel this is an indication that Mike E’s favorite player (Raekwon Davis) isn’t getting the job done on the interior.
So maybe it’s time to give FA Shelby Harris a call?
Between Darth Kader, Iggy’s potential and rookie Cam Smith I think we have plenty of potential at CB
Ogbah at OLB is interesting – I think they just are experimenting a little and don’t draw too much for it
The police waited until the Super Bowl to charge him 3 years after the woman reported it
https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profootballtalk/rumor-mill/news/eagles-josh-sills-found-not-guilty-of-rape-and-kidnapping
He was eventually found not guilty
Honestly not good for the victim (alleged) or the defendant (sills) for that length of time before the charge
Alvin Bragg said hold my beer. Smh
You can’t charge a sitting President though
The only vehicle to charge a sitting President with a crime is impeachment
Bragg is your local DA who Trumped up charges from like 10 years ago
he’s actually not my DA
My DA is the DA of Queens county
We have 5 different DAs in NYC – one for each borough
I think they are charge: from trump’s 2016 reported disclosures and they are essentially the same charges Michael Cohen plead guilty too
I think there’s room to argue that it’s not really the purview of the DA to concern themselves with election law crimes – I personally don’t agree with it
But the length of time is justifiable bc no one could charge the president from 2016-2020
Sills on the other hand was never immune to prosecution and it’s an alleged rape charge where the woman reported it to the Police (in Ohio) the next day – I don’t know why it took 3 years to charge him, no mater the result
Remember these days
Nice work Mike E!
I am still waiting to see what happens with Trill.
Moving Ogbah is indeed interesting, but I don’t see it panning out.
Ogbah to OLB isn’t a possibility in this Defense: he’s too big, too strong, too heavy, too slow, and he doesn’t have any ability in covering TEs… much less WRs.
I’m not knocking my guy Rockphin, I’m just sayin’ that whoever he quoted was SO wrong. Wondering if it was Omar.
Ogbah has — in fact — been taking snaps on the interior Defense (DT).

Cool, he’s a big NT type DT.
I had him as a late round pick for us when he was in the draft. Then wanted us to get him as an UDFA when he didn’t get selected. Not sure what happened to him. He was looking at being a solid 2nd round pick then slid right off everyone’s draft boards.

OFFICIAL!
That was awesome! Well deserved, Zach!
HELL YEAH!!!
That is wild.
Mid Training Camp Mock Draft (LOL) Again, draft order based on last year and will change week to week as season starts.
22. Barrett Carter LB Clemson (IMO, Better than Jeremiah Trotter, Jr)
54. Graham Barton OT Duke (Stud)
150. Nazir Stackhouse DT Georgia (Good DT/NT prospect/run defender)
182. Audric Estime RB Notre Dame (5’11, 227 Beast and hard to tackle)
214. Troy Fautanu OG Washington (LT projects as LG in NFL)
It’s never too early to start taking names, IMO. You’re always on duty, Bro! I’ll be sure to check these guys out in the near future.
Trady Pants Draft (2 trades)
54. Graham Barton OT Duke
65. Tyleik Williams DT Ohio State
66. Will Shipley RB Clemson
68. Max Melton CB Rutgers
97. Danny Stutsman LB Oklahoma
150. Caden Prieskorn TE Ole Miss
182. Delmar Glaze OT Maryland
M, Jeremiah Trotter, Jr is good also and I believe he plays inside. Barrett Carter, 6’1, 228, is a do everything LB. He can play inside/outside/box safety/nickel cover, etc.
These 2 Clemson LB’s are both top five in the next draft.
Yeah, man. I’ve been hearing quite a bit about both, especially Trotter, Jr.
I’d be most pleased with either!
BBM, you’re nuts!😂
lol
BBMike,
Somebody I keep hearing about in some circles is Texas TE Ja’Tavion Sanders. We’ll see how it goes this year without a stud seam-threat TE like Gesicki, but some are raving about Sanders.
6’4″, 241 lbs… that’s ‘Megatron’ territory. JMO, I don’t think we need a TE early in the ’24 Draft, but he’s certainly somebody to keep an eye on.
https://draftscout.com/dsprofile.php?PlayerId=1052950&DraftYear=2025
He’s a good TE. Had a decent game tape vs Alabama last year. He lines up everywhere. Decent blocker. Has top end speed but takes a couple steps to get there. Needs to be better at route running. Hard to put it words but he takes a lot of steps when making his break and slows down. Has great hands.
As a good all-round TE, he is probably going to be the second TE taken. Late 1st round or 2nd. With the way we use TE’s, I am not sure I want to use a high pick on a TE unless his name is Brock Bowers.
FWIW…
What a schmuck! little peter asks Waddle about his QB “Tagoviloa”.
I’ve NEVER liked little peter! SMH 😡
little peter show KNOW by now how to pronounce Tua’s last name, right? That’s total disrespect in my eyes. SMH
*should KNOW*
Herein lies a teachable moment for y’all: I can’t pronounce Peter King’s name correctly either… hence little peter. 😉
And FUCK little peter’s BFFs on NBC… little floria (Mike Florio) and the numb nut Christine Simms.
The leader of the defense.
And then some. We’ve got to pay that cat.
I have no doubt we will. It’s most likely about hashing out the particulars for both sides.
Just keep in mind, if we make Wilkins a franchise player with the contract he deserves… and if Tua succeeds this year like I think most of us believe he will (another franchise contract), we’ve got to draft well from here on out.
No more trading draft picks for high-priced FAs. And before we know it, Waddle will be up for a contract extension.
If we’re trying to vie for a Super Bowl win, NOW is the time… even if it means waiting to pay/extend Wilkins and Tua in the offseason after this year’s Super Bowl.
If we’re going for depth, NOW is the time to sign a RB or DT.
Not worried about the cap. We have a nice 2 year window as is. Then you have move on from some older guys and keep the young train rolling.
Wilkins is a franchise player, imo…. and the organization would be stupid not to recognize that….still love the Goodell body slam as the Dolphin first pick. He’s proved every bit of his worth.
Lol…I only care about winning the first game, and the next, and next….and the rest…
Look at my avi.😉

More instability = larger swings in norms
Lessons for the ignorant over for today
Ha – You don’t know what you don’t know. Heat in the summer and frost in the winter is normal for Florida. Haven’t yet seen any larger than normal swings yet. Just more people to bitch about the weather.
Lessons for the histrionic over for today.
I love the cap for its ability to keep teams from dominating just off the wealth of the owner.
I hate the cap for making cap casualties a thing.
My solution is an individual cap as well. I believe no player is worth $100M a year, so we could start there. And no contract longer than 6 years.
I’d actually like the cap to be $50M a year for any one player.
What you are describing is applying the rookie wage scale to vets. Not a bad idea but the downside is that poor/mediocre players would get the same as elite players.
What’s the upside to denying climate change is happening?
What’s the downside to working on ways to mitigate the harmful effects of weather?
No one here is denying climate change or that humans affect it. The questions are about the extent, how, and what we should do about it. The questions revolve around whether the so called cures are worse than the illness. The John Kerry’s of the world push a narrative of panic and doom because it’s big money and power. They want everyone to buy an electric car even though electric cars are not viable replacement for gas vehicles and are as bad for the environment as gas cars, just in different ways. We are throwing up wind turbines all over only to find that they may be killing whales and definitely are killing avians. Oh yeah…they are also environmentally destructive both in what’s needed to build them and in disposing of them.
$&$&$
We used to think that asbestos was a good thing and that plastics were a better solution than glass and paper. So we insulated our buildings and started using plastic bags and leftover containers. Look where that got us. We think no we understand our environment only to discover that we don’t. Over and over.

Actually just saw an early winter projection. With old El Nino ramping up to be moderate to extreme, it is setting up the winter pattern to be just like what the Farmers Almanac is predicting. This includes a massive blizzard in the central US to NE.
Good Morning Naples! Was wondering yesterday, if we were to draft a LB in the first round (I feel all the top OT’s will be gone when we pick). Who do you like better from Clemson Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. or Barrett Carter?
You are way ahead of me on this, as usual, but I do think both of these young men will have successful NFL careers.
I’d like to see how things go for them this season before I try to decide which would be better for us to draft.
It might be a case where our high draft number (fingers crossed) causes us to have to pick the one that remains for us, but that would still be a quality player.
I also defer to Fangio’s wishes and the need to be a perfect scheme fit.
Since we have not seen Vic’s newest D on the field yet, I can’t say what type ILB he needs. And what if David Long gets hurt, yet again?
Also, we might be better off picking a DT in the first round, depending on who we lose there in FA.
BACK FROM ANOTHER out of state convention. Busy as usual at this convention. But we got stuck about 40 miles south of Atlanta for 90 minutes because of a Greyhound bus (FULL) hitting an F150 pickup on I-75. NOT a pretty site.
———–
Speaking of “NOT a pretty site,” many at this convention believe Tua WON’T make it through the season AND they also believe he’ll spend extended time on the injury list.
I refrained from discussing Tua’s future with one exception. I told one die-hard Dolphin fan, despite all the talent on Miami’s roster, the Dolphins will NOT win a playoff game as long as Steve Ross owns the team. His response? “You’re probably right.”
The more things change the more they stay the same.
Nothing lasts forever.
Maybe this is the year things change.
PS: I know it’s probably a typo from your using speech to text,
but “site” above as in “not a pretty …” should be “sight,” as in something you see, instead of a physical or virtual place.
For example, this is a great place to discuss the Dolphins on a website (and a pretty good one, thanks to Mike E and Twice and Herd et al.) not “web-sight.” It’s not that pretty to look at. (It’s not bad, though.)
no big deal and I’m glad to see you are well enough to be back hard at work.
THANKS for the lesson.
Naples, I agree on DT as well. We have the luxury of going BPA with every pick but I am going to focus on OL, LB and DT in the first 2 rounds. Draft is going to be thin again at LB (I think) so was going early on that. Bunch of small LB’s at the top of the list so If I am going to go small, I want to get a special talent. Should be a good draft for DT’s.
My mind will change 100 times. I just do these way to early drafts out of boredom. It also helps me find guys to watch during the college season.
I love college football. NFL, I hardly watch other games unless it’s the fins or a really good matchup. College, I can watch any game (even teams I hate) looking for a diamond in the rough.
Whoops
Lol….that was funny as shit!
I do think we should make in the USA as much of the stuff we use here in America as possible, instead of getting it from China.
#1 should be drugs, DNA related products, medical tech, etc.
#2 should be meat, fish, veggies, packaged foods, etc.
#3 should be phones, computers, security devices, etc.
#4 should be power grid stuff, energy production stuff, defense tech, etc.
#5 should be farm owners, land owners, bank owners, etc.
#6 should be college students, IT guys, programmers, CEOs, etc.***
#7 should be steel, cement, drywall, wire, and other building materials
We should pass this into law ASAP.
(btw … this law should be expanded to include Russia, N. Korea, Syria, Iran, Somalia, Venezuela, Cuba, Arabia, Belarus, etc.)
*** and immigration from these places should be forbidden and all types of Visas, work permits, etc. should be sunset ASAP and no longer granted.
Posted the other Clemson LB yesterday so figure I will post Jeremiah Trotter, Jr. His instincts show up like his father.
He’s their ILB who just happens to wear #54…
Make it fucking happen…lol
Dolphins’ Christian Wilkins feels he’s done enough to earn a new contract
Mike Masala follow
August 6, 2023 1:09 pm
Entering his fifth NFL season, Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Christian Wilkins is in a contract year.
Miami picked up his fifth-year option last offseason that will pay him a guaranteed $10.75 million in 2023. However, without any guarantee for the future, Wilkins is stepping onto the field with a ton of risk. If he were to suffer a significant injury, his market as a free agent this upcoming offseason would be seriously impacted.
While the former Clemson Tiger is focused on his work on the field, he told reporters on Saturday that he believes he’s earned a new contract.
The biggest thing with that, all that stuff, I just try to focus as much on ball as possible and leave all that other stuff up to the organization and my representation and just control what I can control with my guys and with this team,” Wilkins said. “I definitely feel like I’ve done enough and done a lot to earn a new deal and a new contract; but again, I’m just focusing on ball and improving every day and just giving my all to this organization and hopefully they’ll give their all back to me.”
The 27-year-old has grown into one of the best defensive linemen in football today. Last season, Wilkins played in all 17 games for the second year in a row and recorded 98 tackles, which is the most by any player at his position.
Many defensive linemen have been paid this offseason, and Wilkins has expressed nothing but happiness for those who got their money before he did.
“I just love it for the evolution of the game and how far we’ve come as a position,” Wilkins said. “Again, like I said, I’m big on respecting the game so it’s my job to carry that torch for those Warren Sapps, those Vince Wilforks – all those guys that I grew up watching and learning from. I have a responsibility so I love what we’ve been able to do as a position for the game and hopefully we’ll continue to do that.
Miami currently has $13 million in cap space, but they could create more by extending Wilkins and his interior line mate Zach Sieler. Both have proven to be invaluable to this defensive front, and having them in aqua and orange for the foreseeable future would be smart for head coach Mike McDaniel and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
And Vic loves him!
Another ILB to keep an eye on is Danny Stutsman, 6’4 241, Oklahoma. First year starting last year – 124 tackles, 3 sacks, 2 INT’s with 5 PD’s. Not a speedster, probably a high 4.6 guy. His speed is not bad though. I mean, Zach Thomas ran in the 4.8’s if I remember correctly.
Trying to look at who has the better instincts and smarts like Zach. One thing I notice about Stutsman is I wish he hit with more force for his size.
The best LBs are smart and tough….Zach Thomas comes to mind…lol
And different era and evolution of the game…sorry
True, today’s LB have to be quicker for today’s NFL game. Probably why you see 2/3’s of the top college LB’s weighing in the 220’s and some even lighter.
Another ILB I like a lot with good size and instinct is Tommy Eichenberg, 6’2 240, Ohio State.
Liam’s little brother
Just starting to throw some names out there to keep tabs on. It’s just for those if you are into it since College football season kicks off in 20 days, August 26th with Navy vs. Notre Dame in Dublin, Ireland.
No big matchups and only about 7 games that day. Same with the first official weekend for the rest of college football. Only good matchup to watch is on Sunday, September 3rd at 7:30pm with both pre-season top 10 ranked teams in LSU vs FSU in Orlando, FL.
Sonny, you buy your tickets yet?
No, I’m passing on that one.
It would be so cool to go to Dublin but that’s not happening either.
I’m going to 10/8 vs Giants then staying down there for the Fest the next week.
My friends daughter lives up in Boise and he’s going to the UCF opener in Boise ( the blue field) when he’s up there visiting her and his grandkids, she just had her third!

We just signed a vet DT as MF13 requested.
DaShawn Hand out of Alabama via Lions and Titans.
cut Montalvo from UCF.
Sorry, Son.
oops
beer to TK
I don’t think he’s a NT but more of a 3-4 DE. Fangio is looking for more depth there.
Eguavoen just signed with jest.
I don’t see him being any better than the bottom of our CB depth chart. Don’t think our depth at CB got any better at all. He’s been around longer than Iggy and Iggy has more playing time. Am I missing something on him?
Camp body?
Lol…..subs. I am a bad man.
If DaShawn Hand is 100% healthy and can return to rookie form, he could be a good signing.
Yeah health has been his issue.
Surprised no one has given DJ Fluker a shot in TC. Do they suspect PED’s or something.
I’ve been calling for him(!), but nobody seems to want to touch him. Perhaps there is something with him and PEDs.
We got a second Hand DL. We used to have Norman Hand.
Anyone heard from Cav Kong? Haven’t seen him post lately.
Funny you ask, I actually communicated with him a couple of days ago. He’s good, just drastically cutting down on computer time. He’ll be back when we start playing
Cool. Thanks got the update.
I was wondering about Stanger. He’s not posted recently, or I missed it? I don’t scroll back much. 🤷🏼♀️
Him too. Owe him $ for the fest
Thought I’d be in FL by the end of the month, but the buyer backed out of the house contract, back to square one
That sucks
For the grilles – I will never cook a burger on the grates again. Griddle is the way to go. I have finally mastered ribs and burgers. Brisket is next.
Wilkins is stepping onto the field with a ton of risk. If he were to suffer a significant injury, his market as a free agent this upcoming offseason would be seriously impacted.
Ok, so if it’s more important for him to have future insurance, then lower your asking price
Agents all want to have their cake and eat it too
Then the player cries, woe is me, they don’t love me
It’s a negotiation, the team wants as few years as possible and the player wants the most
Good tape … strong at point of attack … hard to move … doesn’t go backwards
It’s all about health with him because he’s a solid player.
So we have joint practices with the Falcons this week. It’s good for both teams to practice against different opponents.
https://www.si.com/nfl/dolphins/news/miami-dolphins-2023-roster-projection-2-from-alain-poupart
That’s pretty close but could see 4-5 changes too.
I agree with the TE group including Ingold because they will all play multiple roles specifically H-back. Sounds like Ingold who’s another year removed from his knee injury is moving much better and playing faster. Blocking first and receiving second with these guys.
They are coming…

We just cut the 4th QB. Former FSU player and Miami area native.
That says something, not sure what.
He threw for 65 TDs and almost 10K yds in college at the top level.
wow competition must be fierce.
We’ll need to keep him or someone on the PS at QB with the new rule that the emergency 3rd QB must be on the 53.
Or maybe not.
It also says our coaches still like Skylar and
trust him and White to not automatically lose games for us.
Keeping 3 QBs is the new trend. It was 2 for like a decade at least. The most important position can’t be thin and you want guys that know the offense.
^^^
but my question is …
cutting him now before the preseason games must mean some combination of they think they need to give White and Thompson the max amount of work with no distractions from the 4th guy
and that 4th guy had no chance to make the 53 at all.
This will expose QB 2 and 3 to injury and not give the 4th any reps at all, even though they might need to call him back.
Meaning he probably won’t be the 4th guy even if they need one.
Yes he wasn’t in the plans.

Ogbah has played standing up for us in the past. I think many fans have forgotten about him because he missed most of the season last year.
Both are ballers!
Lol…Ogbah and Sieler
I’m trying to recall what my predictions for Tua were last year at this time. I even went back through the archives a bit, but no dice… and I wasn’t trying to spend hours to get my exact prediction.
Anyway, if I recall correctly, I thought Tua would throw for roughly 4,200 yards with roughly 38 TDs in 17 games… and assuming our O-Line got fixed.
As it turned out, Tua played in only 13 games: 3,528 yards with 25 TD. Translated to 17 games? 4,614 yards with 33 TDs… and that translation includes playing games concussed.
I very underestimated his passing yardage while overestimating his TDs. Again… HE PLAYED CONCUSSED for a stretch, and our O-Line wasn’t the best. What’s more, he ended up with the best passer rating in the NFL last year (105.5), among other #1 ratings as a QB(!), nothing I could have predicted!
Folks, if Tua can stay healthy for 17 games, SKY IS THE LIMIT for us Phins!
I truly believe he CAN stay healthy for 17 games (and beyond), so long as our O-Line stays healthy and if he learns to throw the ball away on blow-up plays… either that or just fall to the ground, ala Peyton Manning.
Saying staying healthy is almost worthless to say because of course if you lose your best players you’re not as good.
The Eagles are loaded as long as all those good players stay healthy.🤪

INJURIES
WR Braylon Sanders was carted off the practice field after suffering an apparent knee injury, NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe reported.
LT Terron Armstead (knee) will return to team drills on Wednesday, coach Mike McDaniel told reporters.
Thanks guys!
I am working today. I requested the day off way earlier in the year, but then my bosses decided to sell their building and put all of us in a lease space until “they can figure out what to do with all of us” (they have their own office building separate from ours) Then the proposal that was supposed to be done last week got extended to tomorrow with a bunch of changes so I have no choice. murmer murmer murmer (angry murmer)

“It’s nice to just go against normal people ,” Jones said. “Instead of versus Tyreek (Hill) and (Jaylen) Waddle every day.”

LOL, “normal People”
From the Herald:
News, notes and highlights from the Dolphins’ joint scrimmage against the Atlanta Falcons: The Dolphins lost Braylon Sanders to what appeared to be a left knee injury after he stumbled while trying to hold onto a pass near the sideline. Sanders was on the ground for about 10 minutes and then was carted off, needing assistance to be placed on the cart.
Sanders, before the injury, had made a few notable plays in camp but seemed more likely to be on the practice squad than 53.
▪ The Dolphins’ first and second-team offense had mixed results in 11 on 11 action against the Falcons defense. Each of the three Dolphins quarterbacks threw interceptions.
Miami turned it over on downs on one sequence, when a short throw from Tua Tagovailoa to Tyreek Hill wasn’t enough for a first down.
Tagovailoa had several sharp throws early, including a 25-yarder to Robbie Chosen that beat Richie Grant; a 40-yard completion to River Cracraft for what could have been a touchdown in a real game; and a Tua 15-yard dart to Chosen.
On the flip side, Tua threw an interception to Falcons linebacker Troy Andersen on a poorly thrown 15-yard pass to Freddie Swain, in red zone drills. Then he overthrew Wilson Jr. and Jaylen Waddle in the end zone.
Tua also couldn’t hit a wide open Hill on the sidelines when the ball seemed to slip out of Tua’s hands and then couldn’t connect with Waddle, who was double covered 25 yards downfield on the sideline.
Tua hit Raheem Mostert on a swing pass for a TD in red zone drills. The offense had mixed results in a two-minute drill: Tagovailoa connected with Waddle for a sizable gain and hit Jeff Wilson Jr. for a short gain.
But the drive stalled at the Falcons’ 30. Tua rushed a pass and threw incomplete to Cedrick Wilson Jr. , then short-hopped a pass. Durham Smythe then caught a pass for a small gain, and Jason Sanders entered on fourth down and kicked a 35-yard field goal….
As for the backup quarterbacks… Mike White showed great precision on a 20-yard throw to Tyreek Hill and a 15-yarder to Braxton Berrios and a 10-yarder to Berrios. Another White pass to Waddle was broken up by Breon Borders.
On the flip side, White threw a terrible pass that was intercepted by Micah Abernathy toward the end of practice and made an errant throw when Chosen was open on the sideline. And White had another pass tipped (by linebacker Mykal Walker).
And Skylar Thompson – looking for Waddle – unwisely threw into triple coverage and Borders picked off the pass.
Despite the interception, White has been better than Thompson in the past week after Thompson was better in the first few days of camp. Meanwhile….
the Falcons sacked Dolphins quarterbacks at least four times, including one on a blitz when nobody picked up the blitzer. The whole pocket collapsed on one sack of White.
The running game had very modest success, with none breaking out for big gains. Four runs were stopped for very short gains.
On the plus side, Salvon Ahmed got to the corner for an 8-yard gain, and Waddle gained 10 yards on a sweep. Mostert had a very physical run for five yards. De’Von Achane was decisive on a six-yard TD run in red zone drills.
▪ Defensively, the Dolphins had some good moments, including a Kader Kohou sack and an Elijah Campbell pass breakup on a deep route.
Safety Verone McKinley III had an interception of a Logan Woodside pass and returned it for a touchdown.
Defensive tackle Da’Shawn Hand had a sack in his first Dolphins practice and Brandon Pili had a tackle for loss.
Jaelan Phillips had two run stuffs and Christian Wilkins had at least one. Zach Sieler and a sack, and Kohou had a pass breakup in two-minute drills.
But Brandon Jones and Cam Smith were beaten on a 50-yard Taylor Heinicke completion to Josh Ali.
Noah Igbinoghene and David Long were beaten on a TD pass from Desmond Ridder to Bijan Robinson. ▪ On the oddest play of the day, Julian Hill rose to catch a Mike White pass that popped in the air when a Falcon defender deflected it.
▪ Participation notes: Erik Ezukanma, Achane and DeShone Elliott returned to practice after missing Saturday’s scrimmage. Linebackers Duke Riley and Malik Reed, who missed Saturday’s scrimmage, stretched with the team but didn’t do any more on Tuesday.
Keion Crossen and Ethan Bonner remain sidelined…. Tanner Conner and Nik Needham remain on PUP and Jalen Ramsey remains out… Trill Williams, now listed as a safety, is finally out of the red non-contact jersey, a year after an ACL injury…
But safety Brandon Jones remains in a red non contact jersey after October ACL injury. He said the Dolphins training staff limited him to 12 snaps in team drills on Tuesday.
▪ Notes from QB/WR/DB drills: Wilson Jr. dropped a Mike White pass, and White overthrew Chosen… Berrios got open for a 10-yard catch from Tua, who also threw a 40-yarder to Braylon Sanders in those 1 on 1 drills…. Robbie Chosen caught a 20-yard hitch route from Mike White… Jaylen Waddle caught a 10-yard sideline pass from Tua, with Falcons cornerback AJ Terrell in coverage…. Tua slightly overthrew Berrios in the end zone on a 55-yard deep ball. Berrios had a step on a Falcons cornerback… A Falcons defender dropped a poor throw from Skylar Thompson. And AJ Terrell then dropped another potential Thompson interception, on a deep ball. But Thompson also threw a nice 10-yard pass to a tightly defended Swain for a completion… New Dolphin Mike Rose broke up a pass to the Falcons’ Carlos Washington Jr…Kohou broke up a pass to Atlanta’s Scottie Miller… Xavien Howard was flagged for holding on Falcons receiver Drake London… Igbinoghene was flagged for pass interference on former Dolphins receiver Mack Hollins, now with Atlanta. ▪ From 7 on 7 drills: Tua completed a 40-yard TD, down the sidelines to Mostert, on a wheel route… Tua’s accuracy was off on a crossing pattern to Waddle, who could have possibly run the wrong route…. Tua then delivered a 10-yard pass on the sideline to Tyreek Hill and then hit Waddle on a 16-yard route. Both receivers got separation from Falcons defensive backs… Cedrick Wilson Jr. tried to snatch a Mike White 10-yard pass with one hand but couldn’t do it… Cam Smith had another pass breakup… Igbinoghene knocked away a Ridder pass… Achane couldn’t grab a high but catchable 10 yard throw from Thompson in the middle of the field.
