Dolphins roster moves, odds and ends

As we discussed last week, one of huge offseason acquisitions will be missing lots of playing time, and now it’s relatively official that CB Jalen Ramsey should be out at least until December. The Dolphins immediately picked up veteran CB, former NY Giant, NO Saint, Carolina Panther and Cincinnati Bengal CB Eli Apple. Self proclaimed as “The Silent Assassin”, it’s not clear who the victims are, opposing WR’s or his own team. Over his 7 year career with 4 different teams as a former 1st RD pick in 2016 (#10) to the NY Giants, he’s done a lot of both.

Even more recently, The Dolphins waived FB John Lovett and signed former Detroit Lion and also former Pittsburgh Mauler of USFL. In 2021, Gilbert played in 8 games for the Detroit Lions and then spent 2022 on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice squad. In 2023, in the USFL, Gilbert logged 33 tackles, and the led the USFL with 4 INT’s. After all, he is the cousin of former NY Jet Darrelle Revis. “Gilbert Island” anyone? So what does our depth chart look like at CB? Who starts opposite LCB Xavien Howard is up for grabs. Veteran Eli Apple has played most of his career at LCB, and rookie 2nd RD pick CB Cam Smith, who by the way, at least as far as early returns go, looks fantastic, is listed as 2nd on the depth chart at LCB. Keion Crossen, Justin Bethel and new pickup Mark Gilbert are all RCB’s. Noah Igbinoghene is also listed as depth on the left side. Someone is going to have to change or someone else is going to have to step up and take it.

Just an observation, I was looking at training camp pics, which are available on the official Miami Dolphins website, and I think blocking TE Durham Smythe looks quite a bit on the slender side. To be fair, no one would mistake SF 49ers TE George Kittle with a LB either, so probably much ado about nothing. Maybe TE’s Eric Saubert and Tyler Kroft will do more of the blocking chores in the run game. Also, it’s not the size of the dog in a fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog.

It will be interesting to see how things develop at CB. I love Kader Kohou, does he make the jump to starting outside CB? Do they run with the veteran Apple? Does Gilbert leapfrog everyone after a nice season in the USFL? There are often times when you need at least 3 CB’s on the field, and sometimes more. Kohou, Needham and Trill Williams are all mostly on the inside, but one of them may just have to make the move to the outside. Last year our secondary was in a shambles. Byron Jones never played a snap, and Xavien Howard was bothered by groin injuries most of the first half of the season. Iggy didn’t show up, but Kader Kohou made a nice splash. We could have been special with Jalen Ramsey, now I think most of us would just be happy with adequate if or until Ramsey is healthy.

Dolphins 2023 Camp: August 8 Practice Offense Observations
What stood out on offense during the first joint practice for Miami Dolphins with the Atlanta Falcons
    ALAIN POUPART17 HOURS AGO

Highlights, lowlights and observations from the 10th practice (day 14) of Miami Dolphins training camp Tuesday, better known as the first joint practice with the Atlanta Falcons:

    — The practice was held on perhaps the hottest day of training camp so far and went on for a little bit more than two hours.

    — The most noteworthy developments unfortunately involved two players, one from each team, carted off the field with leg injuries — Dolphins wide receiver Braylon Sanders and Falcons rookie cornerback Clark Phillips III.

    — The overall theme on this day for the Dolphins offense, though, was another disappointing performance following the rough outing in the scrimmage Saturday.

    ACHANE, EZUKANMA RETURN
    — We’ll start off, as usual, with the attendance check, with was highlighted by the return of wide receiver Erik Ezukanma and rookie running back De’Von Achane.

    — Another bit of good news was safety Trill Williams no longer wearing a red (no-contact) jersey, though safety Brandon Jones still had it.

    — The only players who were not spotted at practice Tuesday were cornerbacks Jalen Ramsey, Keion Crossen and Ethan Bonner.

    — As head coach Mike McDaniel had indicated before practice, tackle Terron Armstead did not take part in any team sessions.

    — Linebacker Jerome Baker wore the orange jersey as the top performer from Saturday.

SANDERS’ BIG PLAY BEFORE HIS INJURY
    — The first head-to-head competition involved one-on-one work, and the highlight in the matchup between Dolphins receivers and Falcons defensive backs was Sanders’ long touchdown over cornerback A.J. Terrell — one of the best players in the NFL at his position — on a perfect deep pass by Tua Tagovailoa down the left sideline.

    — Not surprisingly, Tyreek Hill gave Atlanta defenders fits during that session, though Terrell had him very well covered on his first rep.

    — In the pass-rushing session involving linemen, Robert Hunt and Dan Feeney generally performed well among Dolphins offensive linemen,

    — Those who didn’t fare so well among Dolphins linemen were Liam Eichenberg and Connor Williams, who lost one rep after sailing the shotgun snap over the head of the assistant behind him.

[WHY DO WE STILL HAVE SNAP ISSUES? TOO BUSY WORRYING ABOUT AN EXTENSION INSTEAD OF PRACTICING THE SNAP OF THE FUCKING BALL?!!!][an aside…lol].

    PASSING GAME OUT OF SYNC
    — The team periods included red-zone and two-minute work, but none of the three Dolphins QBs really had a great day.

    — Based on some very unofficial stats, Tua completed 12 of 19 passes with one interception; Mike White was 6-for-11 with a pick; and Skylar Thompson completed only one of his three attempts with one pick. Doing the math, that 19-for-32 with three interceptions for approximately 193 yards (unofficial), which would produce a team passer rating on this day of 37.6. That’s not good.

    — Dolphins quarterbacks were sacks a combined four times, but two of those could be attributed to coverage.

    — Tua’s first pass in 11-on-11s was a nice completion to Robbie Chosen, who again was a factor in this practice, though he followed that with a low throw to Jaylen Waddle that he failed to come up with.

    — Sanders was injured on a play where he dropped what looked like an easy pass from White with Terrell in coverage. It wasn’t clear whether Sanders was injured before or after the drop.

    — The Dolphins didn’t have any long completions in 11-on-11 work, though Tua had a good gain (maybe 20-25 yards) on a completion to River Cracraft.

    — White’s biggest gain also covered about 25 yards and came on the first play of an 11-on-11 when he hit Tyreek Hill down the middle.

    — The Dolphins had a really bad sequence offensively that started with Tua being sacked (coverage sack), followed by an incompletion when Waddle was tightly covered near the sideline, followed by two false-start penalties, the second against Isaiah Wynn.

    — White’s best throw was a dart to Braxton Berrios for about 15-20 yards in between defenders in the middle of the field.

    — Tua’s interception came during a red-zone drill when he tried to hit Freddie Swain at around the 5-yard line, but there appeared to be mixup and the two or three players closest to the pass were defenders, including linebacker Troy Andersen, who made the pick.

    — Tua followed that with a pass for Cedrick Wilson Jr. in the back of the end zone that sailed over Wilson’s head and a pass over Waddle’s head.

    — Rookie tight end Julian Hill had the most unusual play of the practice for the offense, a catch near the goal line among defenders after White’s pass was batted at the line of scrimmage and bounced high into the air.

    — Achane had a determined run up the middle in a second-and-goal situation, lowering his shoulder as he was about to make contact with the Atlanta defender.

    — Thompson got the next red-zone series, but it ended immediately when he was picked off by DB Breon Borders, a former member of the Dolphins practice squad, in end zone on a pass intended for Ezukanma.

    — The last play on offense for the Dolphins was White’s pick in a two-minute drill recorded by safety Micah Abernathy on a pass intended for Berrios over the middle when White failed to spot him in a zone in the middle of the field.

    From Atlanta’s perspective….

Miami Dolphins-Atlanta Falcons Joint Practice Report: Falcons’ D Bullies Dolphins’ O

The Miami Dolphins shared a training camp practice field with the Atlanta Falcons Tuesday, and it didn’t go great for Miami’s offense.

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Well, Miami Dolphins coach Mike McDaniel was right when he made the following prediction about sweat-drenched Day 1 of his team’s joint practices against the Atlanta Falcons:

“One side’s going to feel the first day that they won the day.”

Both the Dolphins’ and Falcons’ defenses certainly feel like they won the day Tuesday. We’re a one-man band here at PFN, so we kept a closer eye on Miami’s O vs. Atlanta’s D during Tuesday’s practice. And that performance wasn’t great for the host club, as we explain in our Dolphins practice report.

Miami Dolphins Practice Report: Latest News From Training Camp
    Welp, Tua Tagovailoa
Tua Tagovailoa just didn’t have his good stuff Tuesday, a fact that was clear even in 1-on-1s, when he had a couple of misfires. (Tua did connect with Braylon Sanders on a perfect deep ball over A.J. Terrell before Sanders left practice with an apparent knee injury.)

Tagovailoa also threw well behind Jaylen Waddle in 7-on-7s, although was solid in that drill beyond that.

But once the practice shifted to 11-on-11s, Tagovailoa just didn’t look comfortable.

Unofficially, we had Tua 13 of 21 for 131 yards and a bad pick in team drills. The interception went to Atlanta linebacker Troy Andersen, but any one of four Falcons in the vicinity of Tagovailoa’s intended target, Freddie Swain, could have come away with it.

Andersen probably would have returned the interception for a touchdown if the play happened in a game.

Tagovailoa was also sacked twice, and the offensive line committed two false start penalties in a span of seven plays. It wasn’t good — at all.

McDaniel said prior to practice that he had not yet decided whether Tagovailoa and the rest of the starters will play in Friday’s game, but they certainly didn’t do anything Tuesday to earn the day off.

    Dolphins Reserves Struggle Too
And it got no better when Tua’s backups came in.

It was a Mike White showcase day at Dolphins camp, with the South Florida native misfiring on five of his 11 attempts. White averaged 5.5 yards per attempt and threw one interception, and could very easily have had another on a deflected ball.

White was given a chance to separate himself from Skylar Thompson, getting the vast majority of backup snaps Tuesday.

    He didn’t.

But Thompson was just as rickety, albeit in a much smaller sample size. He had just three passing attempts in 11-on-11s and completed as many passes to the opposition as he did to his own team. Thompson’s one completed pass went for one yard.

Put it all together, and the Dolphins’ quarterbacks had a passer rating under 40. Sheesh.

“Generally the second day, things even out because you watch the tape, and you’re like, ‘oh, no, not again,’” McDaniel said.

    We’ll find out Wednesday.

    Practice News and Notes
Sanders appeared to injure his left knee while attempting to make a catch in team drills. Even before the injury, he was unlikely to make the team. He was fourth string on the Dolphins’ first depth chart of the summer.
The Falcons had their own player carted off the field: DB Clark Phillips III, who, according to Atlanta head coach Arthur Smith was kicked and needed X-rays.
More depth chart observations: Liam Eichenberg has the early lead over Isaiah Wynn for LG1, but they’ve been in rotation with other offensive linemen at that position all summer. … The Dolphins listed River Cracraft as a second-string wide receiver, ahead of Braxton Berrios and Robbie Chosen. … The Dolphins listed Christian Wilkins as a defensive end. The franchise tag number in 2024 for a DE is an estimated $22.2M. It’s $20.9M for a DT.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I haven’t read how our D did against their O.

    Also
assigning a passer rating in something like this is silly.
    A) that includes your 3rd string QB going 1/3 for 1 yard with a pick .
    That’ll knock it down.
    B) 4th string WRs also got ~ equal reps with Tyreek. If Hill had run all those patterns, things like coverage sacks and being overmatched would be much less likely.
    C) AJ Terrell is one of the best DBs out there. He was Pick 16 in the 1st round. Many teams don’t have a CB that good.

    Defensive Observations
What stood out on defense during the first joint practice for Miami Dolphins against the Atlanta Falcons

    Omar Kelly

There was a flashback to the Chad Henne days of practice watching the Miami Dolphins defense go against the Atlanta Falcons offense Tuesday.

For most of the 11-on-11 period, the Falcons offense stomached a heavy diet of check-down passes.

Pair that with Miami’s stingy run defense, which was a good sign to see Tuesday because of the Falcons’ efficiency running the ball last year, and it was a solid performance for the defense.

The practice ended with Miami’s defense keeping Atlanta from advancing down the field during a situational period, and Younghoe Koo missing a 53-yard field goal attempt to close practice.

Koo finished the day 1-for-2, making a 50-yard field goal in an earlier 11-on-11 series.

Here are highlights, lowlights and observations from the 10th practice (day 14) of Dolphins training camp, better known as the first joint practice with the Falcons.

RELATED: The Offensive Observations for the First Joint Practice with Atlanta
Xavien Howard likes facing big receivers

Xavien Howard enjoyed the joint practices because he finally got to defend bigger receivers instead of the speedsters the Dolphins have on the roster.

Howard thrived during one-on-ones going up Drake London, the Falcons’ 2022 first-round pick. London is 6-foot-4, 219 pounds. And the Falcons’ other starter, Mack Hollins, whom Dolphins fans are familiar with from his time in Miami, is 6-4, 221 pounds.

Justin Bethel and Trill Williams were each flagged for pass interferences during their one-on-one reps. Williams was finally out of the red jersey and got involved in more physical aspects of practices.

Kader Kohou had a nice breakup on a pass intended for Scotty Miller. He’s been thriving inside as a slot defender, but still gets handsy from time to time.

During 7-on-7, Noah Ighinoghene had a nice breakup of a Desmond Ridder pass.
Miami’s special teams unit got owned

I generally don’t watch special teams periods closely, but was curious if the unit would rebound from last season’s struggles, and what I saw Tuesday wasn’t encouraging.

The Dolphins got owned in both special teams periods. The Falcons created return lanes on kickoff coverage at least three times, and potentially could have gotten to midfield on each return.

Then when Miami’s blocking unit got their chance, the Falcons stopped them behind the 30-yard line consistently.

Mixing and matching players on that unit usually waters down the group’s efficiency. So let’s look back at the end of the preseason to see if this surfaces as an issue.
    11-on-11 action

Christian Wilkins opened up the meaningful portion of practice with a 2-yard stop of Bijan Robinson, the Falcons’ first-round pick. But the Dolphins’ most impactful defender of training camp sat out most of the 11-on-11 work. It would have been nice to see if Wilkins’ dominance wasn’t a byproduct of Miami’s O-line shortcomings, but that wasn’t in the card.

The Dolphins defense contained Robinson for all but one run during the 11-on-11s, and that was a play where Jerome Baker, the orange jersey player from Saturday’s scrimmage, didn’t fill his gap.

But most of the 11-on-11 session Falcons starting quarterback Desmond Ridder either had pressure in his face, or was forced to check the ball down because nothing was open downfield.
    Pili makes his presence felt

One Dolphins player who delivered an impactful practice was nose tackle Brandon Pili, the undrafted rookie from USC, who I included in my list of 10 players who haven’t impressed in camp’s first two weeks.

Pili sacked Taylor Heinicke during the first 11-on-11 series, and recorded two tackles for loss during his 11-on-11 work.

In his first practice with the Dolphins, newly signed defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand recorded a sack on a Logan Woodside series.

Elijah Campbell had a phenomenal breakup of a pass downfield, and is seemingly settling into the safety spot the former cornerback began playing last year with the Dolphins. At this point I can comfortably place Campbell as Miami’s third best safety. But that doesn’t factor in Jones and Williams.

Speaking of Jones, he and rookie cornerback Cam Smith got beat deep for a 50-yard bomb from Heineke to Josh Ali.

Kohou had a cornerback blitz that ended in a sack.

Bijan Robinson caught a touchdown pass from Ridder that had David Long and Noah Igbinoghene in coverage. Igbinoghene had a relatively inconsistent day, which cooled off his hot Saturday scrimmage showing.

Safety Verone McKinley pulled down an interception during red zone work that would have been a pick-six because he was far ahead of any Falcons defender before the play was blown dead for the sake of saving time.

Jaelan Phillips contributed two would-be sacks on Ridder, and Sieler produced one.

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wilkins stuffed a run right away, so they sat him out from then on.
    Smart move.
No need to risk his health.
    He’s a star.
But he only knows how to play 100%,
so they need to protect him from himself.

I think that about Hill, also. I wish they’d sit him most of the time in preseason.
I guess he needs some timing reps,
    and running the new installs,
but he did “ok” last year without even knowing the offense.

  23. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Speaking of ex Clemson players, they’re not all ok.
    There’s this:
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A former Super Bowl champion with the Kansas City Chiefs is facing several charges after he was found to be in possession of a stolen vehicle and firearms, as well as illegal drugs earlier this week.

Bashaud Breeland, a cornerback who has played eight seasons in the NFL, was booked into the Mecklenburg County Jail early Tuesday, records revealed.

Jail records show is facing a list of charges, including the following offenses:

Possession of a stolen motor vehicle
    Altering serial numbers
    Altering a title
    Possession of marijuana
Possession of a Schedule I controlled substance
    Possession of a stolen firearm

A police report associated with his arrest revealed he was in possession of a stolen Mercedes-Benz SUV, multiple guns, including two AR-15s and two AK-47s.

Police seized the vehicle and weapons along with more than five pounds of marijuana, 62 grams of suspected mushrooms and drug paraphernalia during a traffic stop along North Graham Street on Monday afternoon.

Records show he was released within hours of being arrested after posting a $30,000 bond.

Breeland is a native of Allendale, S.C., and played college football at Clemson before being drafted by Washington in the fourth round of the 2014 NFL draft.

In 2018, Breeland agreed to a three-year, $24 million deal with the Panthers, but later had the deal nullified shortly after due to a failed physical, reports said. He never played for Carolina.

He has not played in the NFL since 2021 when he was with the Minnesota Vikings. He remains a free agent.

Across his eight seasons in the league, Breeland recorded 439 tackles and 16 interceptions.

    1. Offensive guard Isaiah Wynn – The Dolphins gave Terron Armstead his first snaps of joint practice on Wednesday and it was Wynn who was spotted downfield, creating a crease for Salvon Ahmed on a respectable run in the early period where the team was outside. Wynn, who is making the transition back to the left guard spot he played at the University of Georgia after spending his first five years in the NFL as an offensive tackle, showed he has the footwork to be an effective run blocker. However, there’s still work to be done when it comes to pass protection if he’s going to leapfrog Liam Eichenberg on the depth chart.

    Stock down
Left guard Liam Eichenberg – Eichenberg, who has started 26 of 27 games he’s played for the Dolphins the past two seasons, is off to his worst training camp start in his three seasons. He’s in quicksand, sinking fast because of his daily struggles. For the second straight day he was dominated in 1-on-1s against the Falcons defensive linemen, and his work with various units creates doubt about his ability to be Miami’s starting left guard. This former Notre Dame standout definitely has to play in all three preseason games so he can iron out his issues.

One of the most interesting things about training camp

Possible the only interesting thing: is how the depth chart shapes up, specifically IMo the #3 WR

I also thing the CB position is really interesting especially with Ramsey out

But at WR I hear a lot of positives things about Chosen Anderson
Which will be crazy, speed wise, if we have Hill, Waddle and Anderson on the field all at the same time
Throw in Mostert or Achane and it’s a 4×4 olympic team

    Tim,
Feeney isn’t physically gifted like some guys, but he is a known veteran commodity. They’re gonna try other guys who are more gifted or younger but at the end of the day it won’t surprise me if they go with the solid if not spectacular, proven vet. They don’t need to see Feeney in practice. They pretty much know what he’ll give them.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree. I’ve been thinking Feeney could be the LG since we signed him if Eichenberg isn’t cutting it which apparently he isn’t. I was surprised to hear Wynn was working there.

  53. The Flying Pig's avatar The Flying Pig says:

    Tim

Coming into the season I expected Berrios to win the job but I’ve just head a log of positives things about Anderson

Maybe it’s just all the deep catches and the deep speed people are obsessed with – but it sounds like he’s having a very good TC

Also maybe I’m crazy, but if the Dolphins add another RB (like Cook) I wonder if they will think about using Achane more as a Receiver

I always saw him as sort of an all purpose type

Berries and Achane might also be top contenders for the returner position

That’s another big one to be settled in TC

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

That’s all we need him for because his deep threat speed has to be accounted for. He’s going to get single coverage all the time with Hill and Waddle drawing much more attention.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Hill and Waddle are better. You don’t need him on the field at the same time as them. You need Berrios who has more wiggle

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I agree on Berrios but usually either Hill or Waddle will be on the field with other groupings.

I was never blown away by Anderson/Chosen. He is a one trick pony.

    -*****

Our 1 and 2 receivers are top 5 receivers

That’s going to be the being of our offense
After that, whatever our RB does

all we need is a one trick pony as WR3

The advantage to his particular trick is the damaged of letting him loose that going to affect how the safeties defend waddle and hill

I don’t know if Anderson is our #3
But he’s making a splash in training camp

But that position – WR3, isn’t even a outlet slot WR
The way they are running the offense, hill and waddle really use the middle of the file the way a prototypical slot WR does

So Anderson on the outside stretching the defense play after play, might give waddle and hill more room to work

It’s all a guess for me
But I see the lack of investment in the TE position, the offense with a healthy Tua last utilizing the middle of the field, the aggressiveness in brining in players like Anderson, Berrios and Achane and I think what the Dolphins are trying to do this season is get hill and waddle even wider open in that middle of the field area – use the TEs as safety valves

And then use the other skill players on the field to create room for Hill and Waddle

Anderson doesn’t have to be a superstar to get a safety to pay attention to him

And we don’t need a superstar as our 3rd receiver
A one trick pony is probably ideal

And that will in the long run save is money to invest in the OL which I know is important to you

I suppose you’re assuming Waddle and Hill will be playing on the outside

Hill and Waddle are both very good in the slot, put 1 of them in the slot and Chosen outside

Chosen isn’t a 1 horse pony, you don’t get 95 receptions (2020) just going deep

Dolphins vs. Falcons: Preseason Week 1 preview

    @Jason_Sarney follow
    August 11, 2023 4:36 pm ET

Thankfully, it’s Friday, and thank you to the football gods for bringing us a day and night of Miami Dolphins football.

The Dolphins will kick off their preseason slate of three games with their first opponent, the Atlanta Falcons, at the friendly confines of Hard Rock Stadium at 7:00 p.m. ET.

This is a game that’ll feature 90 players on each side, nearly half of which won’t be able to say that they’ll be on these 53-man rosters in a month. Players 30 through 90 in the pecking order should be in full preparation to play mass snap counts tonight, whereas the upper-echelon veterans on the Dolphins roster should be in street clothing. Perhaps a few could be getting a series or two just to get assimilated to game speed.

While it’d be nice to see certain players in some experimented rolls, such as Andrew Van Ginkel, it wouldn’t be a surprise if he himself isn’t playing tonight, along with other veterans players like Xavien Howard, Terron Armstead, Christian Wilkins, Zach Sieler, Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb, Connor Williams, Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle.

Tonight is a culmination of a week’s worth of joint practices with the Falcons, and the game should focus on scrapheap veterans and undrafted rookies that’ll be fighting their individual position battles to survive the first round of cuts. In some cases, these cuts could happen pretty immediately following this game.

The players to watch specifically are those within position groups that may have top-heavy talent but some depth needs. Specifically the interior defensive line as well as the inside linebacker area.

It’s also evident that players will have to step up on the offensive line as left guard and right tackle aren’t necessarily locked down by any specific player at the moment. Liam Eichenberg and Austin Jackson right now are penciled in those positions, respectively.

On the defensive line, look for undrafted free agent defensive lineman, and nose tackle specifically, Brandon Pili from USC. The Dolphins will need to find a backup for starting nose tackle Raekwon Davis, as that’s a very important position in Vic Fangio’s defensive scheme. With that lack of depth behind Davis, and Pili already playing well in training camp this week against the Falcons in practice, it’s his spot on the roster to lose.

Another name to watch is inside linebacker Aubrey Miller, who was a star at Jackson State, an HBCU school in which Deion Sanders was once the head coach and who raved about his former player.

Some other names for deep developmental watch would be wide receiver Daewood Davis and outside linebacker Mitchell Agude. While the Dolphins’ wide receiving corps is battling for positions three through six, there could be one or two practice squad players in the 2022 Braylon Sanders mold, and Davis could be the 2023 version.

Other players that are already tenured in the NFL, such as Erik Ezukanma and Channing Tindall, will certainly be on display as well tonight – especially former first-rounder entering a truly make-or-break year, cornerback Noah Igbonoghene.

Mike White and Skylar Thompson are quarterbacks still battling to see who’ll back up Tua Tagovailoa, and that will be something to watch for this evening as well.

While the offseason and preseason are a marathon and not a sprint, a big-time mile marker will be crossed tonight in Miami Gardens.

    Football is back.
