2023 Preseason Game 2 – Dolphins @ Texans

It appears as if the Dolphins avoided a major disaster, losing LT Terron Armstead for an extended period of time after getting injured in practice, his first snap actually. Armstead left the field barely putting on any weight on the leg that was injured, but he says he’ll be ready for game #1, and there is no major injury requiring surgery. Now that we got that out of the way, there are a few things I want to see in preseason. Most importantly, NO MORE INJURIES!!! I would like to see CB Cam Smith continue to get important reps and show he’s serious about getting plenty of reps in the regular season. Backup QB’s Mike White and Skylar Thompson just have to do better. We know neither of them are going to run this offense as crisply and effectively as Tua, but we need them to be competent enough to put points on the board. I’m really hoping we see better play from both of these guys.

I would really like to see RB Chris Brooks get more carries, and see if we may possibly have something there. He’s not the prototype “big back” like Tennessee’s Derrick Henry, but compared to the stable of RB’s we have here in Miami, Brooks looks huge! I feel like all our RB’s are so close in running style and especially stature, that it would be nice to have a big back like Brooks make the team. Brooks is 6′ 223, while the lot of Mostert (5’10 205), Wilson (6′ 210), Ahmed (5’11 197), Gaskin (5’10 199) and Achane (5’9 188) are all very similar size wise. Yes, we have FB Alec Ingold who’s a load at 6’1 240, but Ingold has only 21 carries in 4 years in the NFL for a reason. Of course, the 4 best guys will make the team, this much I get, but I hope Brooks shows enough to be viewed as a possibilty to make the roster.

I’m curious to see more of LG Lester Cotton. He was great in practice, he had some very dominant reps, so I would love to see that dominance in game play, even if it’s a preseason game. It doesn’t matter what round you were drafted in on the O-line, if you can move people, you’re going to get noticed. Would I love Liam Eichenberg to play like the guy we hoped he could be when we moved up in the 2nd RD of the 2021 NFL at pick #42 to get him, of course, but at this point, I just want someone competent, and hungry for the job. If it’s Lester Cotton, who is actually 3rd string at RG, or Isaiah Wynn who is a veteran as well, I don’t care as long as they play well.

The competition at DT is pretty intense with DT’s Brandon Pili and Jaylen Twyman, Most importantly though, we need to get through the negotiations and sign DT/DE Christian Wilkins to a long term deal and keep him in Miami for another 6 years. He’s been an exemplary player, hard worker who brings it every week. Once Wilkins is signed the next up should be DT/DE Zach Sieler. There are some good battles at LB as well, with guys like Mitchell Agude, Mike Rose, and Aubrey Miller. It’s no given that last year’s 2nd RD pick LB Channing Tindall is a lock to make the roster, how these guys play on special teams could be the key to making the 53. BTW, the pronounced demise of the Mac was a bit premature. It’s slow, and uncooperative at times, and I do need to get a new one, but this article was written on the Mac, so LONG LIVE THE MAC!

    Miami Dolphins Make Roster Moves
    Aug 28, 2023 at 04:13 PM

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The Miami Dolphins announced they have released tackle Geron Christian, wide receiver Keke Coutee and linebacker A.J. Johnson. The team also waived linebacker Mitchell Agude, quarterback James Blackman, defensive tackle Josiah Bronson, defensive end Randy Charlton, wide receiver Chris Coleman, linebacker Aubrey Miller II, linebacker Garrett Nelson, safety Keidron Smith, tackle James Tunstall, defensive tackle Jaylen Twyman and defensive tackle Jamal Woods.

It really does feel as though we’re going to come away with Jonathan Taylor, doesn’t it? I just hope we don’t give up too much. At this point in time, I believe we’re offering a 2nd rounder… that’s too high for my liking and JMO.

  5. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I guess there’s no room for AJ Johnson.
None of the others are surprising.
    Most of them were UDFAs.

Naples, any idea of how many more we need to cut before tomorrow’s deadline to get to 53? I’m multi-tasking and honestly have no idea, man.

The injury to Elijah Campbell makes the DB room even more confusing.
Will he go on IR for the whole season?
Does that make him not count on the 53?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

The way I’ve heard it, Campbell should make the 53 and then be put on IR-designated to return. After which, he could come back later in the season.

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

and while he’s on IR, we get to fill that roster spot with another player, right?

Yes someone takes the spot when he goes on IR.
If he goes on IR before he makes the 53 then he’s out for the year by being on the 53 he can be designated for return during the season

HURRICANE IDALIA COUNTDOWN HERE IN GREATER TAMPA BAY. Forecasters at the NHC say this hurricane should pass just west of Tampa early Tuesday morning.

Thdese are the same guys who predicted IAN would pass west of Tampa last year. Instead, that category 4 hurricane took an abrupt right turn and DESTROYED FT MYERS BEACH!! SO my confidence regarding the NHC is about the same as it is for Ross’s front office boys. And that’s NOT a good thing!!

We still have 14 CBs on the roster.
We list 4 safeties, all of whom I believe should make the team.
    Holland, Jones, Elliot, McKinley
Even if we keep 10 total DBs,
we need to cut more than half of those CBs.

  19. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We made a great trade today, Feeney to Bears for a 6th

Looks like Bears will assume the guarantees on the contract, if we had cut him, we’d be on the hook for 3.135m

He likely by play alone wasn’t making the 53

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

That’s a win win win win deal right there.
Good for us and the Bears and Feeney and the OL room logjam.

  20. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

At LB we show 9 and only need 8.
Although one report had Malik Reed as cut, he’s still on the official roster,
and all those other guys who got cut are not listed anymore.
If he’s still on there, then I guess it’s between him and Goode for the last spot.
They are almost exactly the same size at 6’2 or 6’3 and 245.
This makes them somewhat light for OLBs.

Another thing they might do is cut both and keep Ogbah and either Hand or Pili
to back up Raekwon Davis, giving us 2 NTs to go with Sieler and Wilkins as DTs.

That would be 5 DL. We probably need that many.
    I personally like Ogbah,
although I don’t think our coaches see him as a productive DL.

Ogbah is again this year the only guy listed at DE.

My son moved to Tampa last summer impart, because no hurricanes have hit there in over 100 years

    I think you’re safe OD

  22. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

We still show 9 WR on the roster.
Davis is hurt, of course, and will probably be waived, injured
or maybe IRed for the season.
And Sanders is also hurt, I think.
Either way those two should be cut.
I’d like to carry all the others.
Several of them can play special teams and that position gets hurt a lot.
We could carry 7 if we only go with 3 TEs (and the FB) or 4 DL.

    But we won’t do that.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Cracraft likely won’t be on the initial 53, he’s the least likely to be poached

Higgins may be stached on the PS

I’d trade Ahmed and keep Brooks

      • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

        Most probably true,
just as they did last year
and then called him up whenever a guy got hurt.
        Cracraft just gets open though.
He scored 2 TDs last season.
He has good chemistry with both Tua and Skylar.

  23. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

We have too many short term injuries, that’s going to cost bubblers their 53 spot

We’ll have to keep guys on the initial 53 before moving them to short term IR

  24. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I love Ahmed, but we really should trade a RB or a WR or both for Taylor,
since we have too many of the same type guy at both positions.
The Colts are a bit light at WR,
and they did cut a solid RB (Kenyan Drake),
so they might have a slot, if they also trade Taylor away.

Were we trying to showcase Ahmed during this preseason as trade material?

I would love to see the Colts taking Ahmed, Ced, and a 2024 pick for Taylor.

Then we’d keep 4 RBs and Ingold.
    Mostert, Wilson, Taylor, and Brooks.

  25. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

I see it a different way. Whether we trade for Taylor or not, I’d keep Mostert, Achane, Ahmed and Brooks. If we do get Taylor, Wilson would likely be included in that deal.

    ——————
Spotrac shows we are taking a 2 million dead cap hit with the Feeney trade.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

      That’s accurate

Feeney’s departure unloads his $3.25 million contract, which Miami fully guaranteed, helping the Dolphins clear $1.2 in cap space (the Dolphins are responsible for his $2.05 million signing bonus).

      • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Except we didn’t save 1.2m as his replacement will cost about 1m

We have 13 guys, not currently in the top 51, that have a good chance to make the roster

  28. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

We have cleared no top 51 cap space with the release of Reed and trade of Feeney.

  29. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I thought Feeney was going to be a key acquisition for our OL?

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

yeah who’s the back up Center, right?
Wynn has played well at LG and so has Cotton.
A surprise cut would be Eichenberger,
but maybe now he’s the backup center.

Lamm has played well at LT, so he can spell Armstead.
