2023 Preseason Game 2 – Dolphins @ Texans

It appears as if the Dolphins avoided a major disaster, losing LT Terron Armstead for an extended period of time after getting injured in practice, his first snap actually. Armstead left the field barely putting on any weight on the leg that was injured, but he says he’ll be ready for game #1, and there is no major injury requiring surgery. Now that we got that out of the way, there are a few things I want to see in preseason. Most importantly, NO MORE INJURIES!!! I would like to see CB Cam Smith continue to get important reps and show he’s serious about getting plenty of reps in the regular season. Backup QB’s Mike White and Skylar Thompson just have to do better. We know neither of them are going to run this offense as crisply and effectively as Tua, but we need them to be competent enough to put points on the board. I’m really hoping we see better play from both of these guys.

I would really like to see RB Chris Brooks get more carries, and see if we may possibly have something there. He’s not the prototype “big back” like Tennessee’s Derrick Henry, but compared to the stable of RB’s we have here in Miami, Brooks looks huge! I feel like all our RB’s are so close in running style and especially stature, that it would be nice to have a big back like Brooks make the team. Brooks is 6′ 223, while the lot of Mostert (5’10 205), Wilson (6′ 210), Ahmed (5’11 197), Gaskin (5’10 199) and Achane (5’9 188) are all very similar size wise. Yes, we have FB Alec Ingold who’s a load at 6’1 240, but Ingold has only 21 carries in 4 years in the NFL for a reason. Of course, the 4 best guys will make the team, this much I get, but I hope Brooks shows enough to be viewed as a possibilty to make the roster.

I’m curious to see more of LG Lester Cotton. He was great in practice, he had some very dominant reps, so I would love to see that dominance in game play, even if it’s a preseason game. It doesn’t matter what round you were drafted in on the O-line, if you can move people, you’re going to get noticed. Would I love Liam Eichenberg to play like the guy we hoped he could be when we moved up in the 2nd RD of the 2021 NFL at pick #42 to get him, of course, but at this point, I just want someone competent, and hungry for the job. If it’s Lester Cotton, who is actually 3rd string at RG, or Isaiah Wynn who is a veteran as well, I don’t care as long as they play well.

The competition at DT is pretty intense with DT’s Brandon Pili and Jaylen Twyman, Most importantly though, we need to get through the negotiations and sign DT/DE Christian Wilkins to a long term deal and keep him in Miami for another 6 years. He’s been an exemplary player, hard worker who brings it every week. Once Wilkins is signed the next up should be DT/DE Zach Sieler. There are some good battles at LB as well, with guys like Mitchell Agude, Mike Rose, and Aubrey Miller. It’s no given that last year’s 2nd RD pick LB Channing Tindall is a lock to make the roster, how these guys play on special teams could be the key to making the 53. BTW, the pronounced demise of the Mac was a bit premature. It’s slow, and uncooperative at times, and I do need to get a new one, but this article was written on the Mac, so LONG LIVE THE MAC!

    Phel … gotcha …
but would that be for one game up and then back down?
That’s a hell of a clumsy way to handle such an important position on the field.

Like we did with Cracraft and others last year?

I heard there’s some new rule about the 3rd QB,
but I don’t know what it is.
And would he be the 3rd or 2nd?
They also signed Malik Cunniugham at QB to the PS.

I don’t care, as long as we sweep their cheatin’ asses.

If you have a 3rd QB on your roster he can be inactive and come in and play due to injury to top 2 QBs

    • pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

They may go the route of bringing him up and down, but there is a limit to how many games they play before becoming ineligible for the PS. More likely they will bring him up twice and leave him up. His salary isn’t guaranteed after week 1. I’m not sure what they benefit from this – his salary can’t be that high.

Miami Dolphins adding a true Florida Man to their roster to replace Igbinoghene

The Miami Dolphins are picking up a player with some baggage after they traded for Joseph Kelvin.

By Theo Grontis | 8:00 AM EDT

Tuesday afternoon was cutdown day in the NFL. By 4 o’clock eastern, teams were required to shave their 90-man roster down to 53 players.

Some teams engaged in trades prior to the cutoff. The Dolphins were one of those teams. Right before the deadline, they shipped former first-round pick Noah Igbinoghene to the Cowboys in exchange for corner Kelvin Joseph. According to head coach Mike McDaniel, the Dolphins had no intentions of trading Igbinoghene and it was the Dallas Cowboys who initially proposed the idea.

Dallas drafted Kelvin Joseph back in 2021 out of the University of Kentucky. Despite contributing heavily on special teams, the former second round pick never secured a starting role for the Cowboys.

From an outsider’s perspective, a corner for corner swap seems a little redundant. Both are essentially the same type of player – a fringe contributor with unrealized potential. Although the Dolphins do benefit marginally on this transaction as they save about 800k in cap space.

What’s more interesting about this acquisition is that the Dolphins are picking up a player with some baggage.

Back in March of 2022, Joseph was connected to a drive-by shooting which killed an individual. It was determined that the cornerback was a passenger in the vehicle but was not involved in the shooting. The perpetrators have since been arrested and no charges have been laid on Joseph.

In his spare time Joseph is a rapper who releases music under the moniker ‘YKDV (you know da vibe) Bossman Fat’. On Spotify, he has 328 monthly listeners and his biggest track ‘Pain’ has almost 24,000 streams. Safe to say it’s more of a hobby and not a second career.

The Dolphins are essentially adding a part-time rapper with ties to violent crime to their special teams unit.

In essence it reads like a true ‘Florida Man’ headline:

Rapper with Ties to Murder Will Play Special Teams on Florida Football Team

In fairness to it all, front offices construct their roster based on their surrounding environment. If you are in the Northeast, you want players who are physically tough and can handle the cold. If you play in a dome, you opt for quicker players who can cut on a dime. But if you play in the sweaty, muggy, craziness that is South Florida. Perhaps you sign the type of players that will make headlines for all the wrong reasons.

    Time will tell…

New Dolphins CB Kelvin Joseph Scouting Report

Joseph was acquired in a trade for former first-round pick Noah Igbinoghene
    ALAIN POUPART41 MINUTES AGO
    In this story:

The Miami Dolphins acquired a player via trade Tuesday; it just wasn’t the one fans expected.

The Dolphins traded former first-round cornerback Noah Igbinoghene to the Dallas Cowboys in exchange for former second-round cornerback Kelvin Joseph.

Let’s look at Joseph’s background, strengths and weaknesses to determine how he fits into Miami’s plans this season.

    Kelvin Joseph’s Background

Joseph declared early for the 2021 NFL draft after his redshirt sophomore season at Kentucky. He played in just 20 college games (nine with the Wildcats and 11 with LSU).

He started in all nine games with the Wildcats in 2020, recording a career high in passes defended (5) and interceptions (4).

The cornerback’s draft stock spiked after his impressive athletic testing. He ran a 4.34 40-yard dash and had a 128-inch broad jump, which ranked in the 92nd and 84th percentiles, respectively.

The Dallas Cowboys selected Joseph with the 44th overall pick. He played 26 games in the past two seasons, starting in just three.

    Kelvin Joseph’s Strengths

Joseph’s main strength — as it relates to his fit with the Dolphins — is his zone coverage ability. Coming out of Kentucky, most draft analysts viewed Joseph’s best scheme fit as a team that would play heavy zone coverage.

He has the long speed to stick with defenders deep and the explosiveness to break downhill and make plays on the ball. Joseph has also flashed good run defense in the past.

In 2021, he had eight total run stops (a play considered a failure for the offense) on just 68 run defense snaps.

Dolphins defensive coordinator Vic Fangio emphasizes all of those traits in his cornerbacks.

Those natural traits typically project well to an outside cornerback role. However, Joseph moved to the slot this preseason and proved he could hold his own.

In 37 coverage reps from the slot this preseason, Joseph allowed just two catches on eight targets, according to PFF. This is especially important for the Dolphins, who have a need in the slot.

Jalen Ramsey will miss a chunk of the season after meniscus surgery, and Nik Needham was placed on PUP on Tuesday. If healthy, both players likely would play significant slot reps.

Kader Kohou figures to play there for the time being, but he didn’t have a healthy backup until the Joseph trade. It’s a small sample size from the preseason, but Joseph’s potential versatility is a massive plus for the Dolphins.

It’s also essential to consider Joseph’s overall upside. He hasn’t played much football between his two NFL and college seasons. He has the athletic and physical profile of an above-average cornerback; he just needs to be coached up.

    Kelvin Joseph’s Weaknesses

Joseph’s upside and fit are all quite good. It’s also easy to see him getting on the field this season with the team’s lack of slot cornerback depth.

However, his on-field play has been quite underwhelming thus far.

Typically, Fangio likes to run a lot of quarters (Cover 4) and Cover 6. Joseph had just 28 snaps in those coverages last season, according to Sports Info Solutions. In those 28 snaps, he allowed three catches on five targets, with all three catches resulting in touchdowns.

That’s an incredibly small sample size to judge a player on. But looking at Joseph’s general coverage numbers raises more concerns.

Joseph was targeted 18 times last season and allowed 12 catches for four touchdowns. He was a little better in 2021, allowing eight catches on 17 targets and one touchdown.

Given those numbers, it’s no surprise Joseph didn’t get on the field much for the Cowboys. It’s pretty clear on film why Joseph was getting beat so often on the outside — lack of experience.

He doesn’t quite have a great feel for route concepts coming in and out of his area, leaving him susceptible to big plays where a more experienced player would limit the damage.

He tends to panic and abandon his technique when he knows he’s beaten vertically. That also makes him a target for big plays and easy completions. Joseph has all the tools to be successful. He’s just not using them effectively right now.

To his credit, he looked much more confident in his technique while playing the slot during the preseason. It’s on the Dolphins coaching staff to build on that and continue his development.

    Kelvin Joseph and Special Teams

Joseph should provide the Dolphins some value on special teams this season. He played 142 special teams snaps in 2021 and 217 in 2022 for the Cowboys. The cornerback had limited special teams experience but caught on at the end of last season.

His natural speed and length (77-inch wingspan) should make him a solid tackler on the move. That will help him possibly earn spots as a gunner on punts and kickoff coverage. Last season, Joseph had 70 snaps on kick coverage and 58 on punt coverage. One thing he needs to clean up on special teams is penalties. Joseph was penalized six times on special teams last season, matching his six total special teams tackles.

    Bottom Line on Kelvin Joseph

At the end of the day, the Dolphins flipped a struggling, high-upside cornerback (Igbinoghene) for another in Joseph. Although the two have different flaws, their career arcs have a lot of similarities.

Where Joseph separates himself is his fit with this specific coaching staff. Although his numbers in Fangio’s preferred coverages aren’t great, Joseph has all the natural tools to excel in the Dolphins’ new scheme.

His run defense and budding slot versatility will also be considerable benefits in a defense that needs cornerbacks to tackle and moves its defensive backs around post-snap.

Joseph is a high-upside player acquired for little investment. Regardless of the eventual outcome, getting a player with Igbinoghene’s upside and a more straightforward path to playing time is an excellent process.

He has a chance to be everything Iggy was expected to be and more (STs)

His biggest downside is his inexperience on outside, play him at nickel and those concerns mostly go away

The trade allows us to move Kohou outside, if Apple is hurt or struggles or Fangio just wants Kohou outside

Bottomline is this trade should make us better more versatile

Looked it up. Evans ran a 4.41 at the combine but ran sub 4.4 in track. So he got some speed.

      I’d rather have Darrynton Evans.
      His career could still rise.
Kirksey is on the downslope of a mediocre career.

I never had Jeff Wilson in my RB depth chart so I’m fine with him being out

Evans is from Oak Hill FL which is a tiny town just barely north of Cape Canaveral.
    So he knows our weather.
    He’s 5’10 203 with a muscular build.

M, I see the Colts released DT McTelvin Agim. He made their initial 53 but then was released a day later.

I think if Achane and Ahmed are still beat up,
we could see Brooks get some quality touches against the Chargers.

And if he tears it up, we could see a STORY develop,
like some of you have pointed out.

There are some UDFA RB success stories out there.
Even if the player did not last more than 3-5 years,
they carried their teams for a year or two.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

      Brooks is definitely a sleeper.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

As things took shape its really a no-brainer, that Brooks made the 53

We’ll soon see, if he’s a keeper or was just beating up on bottom feeders

Darrynton Evans is more injury insurance

    From the MH

In this week’s Dolphins In Depth podcast, Daniel Oyefusi and David Neal discuss Miami’s 53-man roster, Christian Wilkins and more.

The Dolphins on Thursday announced their final eight signings to complete their 16-man practice squad.

Miami added the following players: offensive linemen James Tunstall and Chasen Hines, defensive linemen Chase Winovich and Rashard Lawrence, tight end Nick Bowers, running back Darrynton Evans, safety Joshua Kalu and wide receiver Raleigh Webb.

Here is what to know about the Dolphins’ new additions.

    ▪ OT James Tunstall: Tunstall, 23, originally signed with the Dolphins in May as an undrafted free agent. He spent training camp with the team and was waived on Monday.

    ▪ OL Chasen Hines: Hines, 23, was waived by the New England Patriots on Tuesday. A sixth-round pick of the Patriots in 2022, Hines spent the majority of his rookie season on injured reserve. He played all 111 offensive snaps at left guard in the preseason.

    ▪ DE Chase Winovich: Winovich, 28, was released by the Houston Texans on Tuesday. A third-round pick of the New England Patriots in 2019, Winovich has appeared in 53 games (11 starts) with the Patriots and Browns, recording 105 tackles and 12 sacks.

    ▪ DT Rashard Lawrence: Lawrence, 25, was waived by the Arizona Cardinals on Tuesday. A fourth-round pick of Arizona in 2020, Lawrence has appeared in 25 games (13 starts), recording 30 tackles and one forced fumble.

    ▪ TE Nick Bowers: Bowers, 27, was waived by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. He originally signed with the Las Vegas Raiders as an undrafted free agent in 2020, appearing in two games in 2021. He spent the 2022 season on Cincinnati’s practice squad.

    ▪ RB Darrynton Evans: Evans, 25, was waived by the Buffalo Bills on Tuesday. A third-round pick of the Tennessee Titans in 2020, he has appeared in 12 games, rushing 30 times for 125 yards. He has also caught five passes for 71 yards and one touchdown. Evans spent the 2022 season with the Chicago Bears.

    ▪ S Joshua Kalu: Kalu, 28, was released by the Washington Commanders on Monday. He originally signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2018, appearing in 44 games (five starts) over four seasons. Kalu recorded 68 tackles, five pass breakups and one interception.

    ▪ WR Raleigh Webb: Webb, 25, was waived by the Patriots on Tuesday. He signed with the Ravens as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and appeared in two games in Baltimore, including against Miami in Week 2 last season. New England signed Webb to its 53-man roster in October and he appeared in 10 games; he didn’t catch a pass but contributed on special teams.
What to know about the NFL practice squad

    ▪ Teams can add up to 16 players on the practice squad.

    ▪ All players with zero accrued seasons and those with fewer than nine regular-season games in their lone accrued season are eligible for the practice squad. Teams can also sign up to 10 players with two or fewer accrued seasons and up to six players with unlimited accrued seasons on the practice squad.

    ▪ A practice-squad player can sign to another team’s 53-man roster throughout the league year but cannot sign to another team’s practice squad.

    ▪ Each week, a team can elevate a maximum of two players from the practice squad to the game day roster. Any practice squad player can be elevated a total of three times before having to join the 53-man roster. If the player is elevated again, they must be placed on waivers before being re-signed.

The NFL’s version of fuck around and find out

It’s not that you can’t but if you do you must offer that player up to every other team before you can sign him back to your squad.

I like Ingold. I didn’t realize his history.

I just noticed on this video there is a little gear at the bottom of the video screen. If you click it you can adjust the speed of the video. If those breakdowns we like from the guy who’s balls haven’t dropped yet has the same button I am going to lower his voice. LOL

  92. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Ingold says what I have heard many dolphins players say in the past few years. This team is a close as any team he has been on. The players play and practice hard for each other and there is a really tight bond of friendship
