2023 Season – Game 1 – Dolphins @ Chargers

Alright Dolphins fans, relaxed, reserved, nonchalant Mike E. is gone! It’s 2023, and our time is NOW!! This is undeniably the most talented roster we have had here in Miami since the mid 90’s. and our last playoff victory was 23 years ago against the Indianapolis Colts when RB Lamar Smith put the team on his back and ran his heart out for 209 yards on 40 carries and 2 TD’s, one of them in OT for the win, a 17 yard power run carrying defenders in the end zone. It’s time to reclaim that kind of glory. We have drafted, traded for, and signed the type of roster that should take us into the playoffs and beyond. Don’t discount the fact that RB Raheem Mostert is now rippling with 215 lbs of speed and muscle. Don’t discount the fact that we actually gave a pretty big contract to a FB, one Alec Ingold. Also, don’t discount that the Miami TE room is filled with guys who block, and make space for RB’s. Sure, no Dolphins TE jumps off the page as a pass catcher, but all of them block, and block well. I know we have Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle, one of the most formidable WR duos in the NFL, but this team was built for the long haul, and if you want to be a playoff contender, you have to be able to run the football, and that’s why we have all those blocking TE’s, one expensive FB, a speedy RB (Mostert) that put on 10 pounds of muscle, and a guy who I believe has a bigger impact than some believe, RB Chris Brooks, undrafted from BYU, a big bodied RB at 6’1 223. We wanted Jonathan Taylor because he’s a big back, different than anyone else on our roster, a finisher. That’s what Chris Brooks will be for us in time.

If you’ve realized, I spent an entire dialogue on the offense and now, in the 2nd paragraph, I’m going to finally talk about our defense. This is a defense just ready to climb to the top of the NFL. It would have been wonderful if we had signed DT Christian Wilkins, but both he, and the team remain committed to getting a deal done, and I don’t think for a minute that a person of Wilkin’s character needed a reason to play hard and have a great season, but the fact that he wants a huge contract doesn’t hurt any in incentivizing him to have a great season. We brought in DC Vic Fangio to finally unleash what this defense is capable of. OK, it wasn’t ideal that one of the key guys we traded for is out till most likely November at the earliest, Jalen Ramsey, but we have so much talent on this defense, including the secondary, that Ramsey will end up being a pleasant boost when he’s healthy. CB Xavien seems healthy, and 2nd year rising star Kader Kohou looks like may start opposite Howard, just going by the depth chart on the Dolphins home page. I won’t be surprised, because most of the time when I imagine Eli Apple, I see WR’s running by him and see the back of his jersey. If that’s the case, either rookie Cam Smith could be the nickel, or maybe if he’s not healthy enough, Apple or newly acquired CB Kelvin Joseph will play nickel back. At safety, Brandon Jones returns from injury, and he was having a great season before his injury in Game 7. Jevon Holland is poised to have an All Pro type season at the other safety spot.

Third paragraph in and I still haven’t yet mentioned the defensive line and linebackers, the creme de al creme. Christian Wilkins at LE, Raekwon Davis in the middle and Zach Sieler at the other end spot, who just got a nice contract extension. At LB, definitely our best unit in quite some time, with Jalen Phillips at LOLB, the unheralded LILB Jerome Baker, David Long who came over from Tennesee and will be big player in our defense, and then Bradley Chubb at ROLB. DE/OLB Emmanuel Ogbah will be getting a fair amount of reps both hand in the ground and standing up. We have nice depth at LB with familiar faces Andrew Van Ginkel, Duke Riley, 2nd year LB Channing Tindall and the aforementioned Emmanuel Ogbah who will play both DE/DT and OLB. The area of biggest concern for me is the spot opposite X. Can either Kader Kohou, Cam Smith or Eli Apple, or possibly even Kelvin Joseph hold down that spot and do at least an average job? Big question, and one that will be tested immediately against QB Justin Herbert, who loves to throw the ball down the field. I would imagine we’re not going to leave whoever plays that spot on an island and they will likely get safety help, which then would put a lot of pressure on X in one-on-one coverage. Mike Williams, one of the bigger WR’s in the NFL is a physical player who will give most DB’s a tough assignment, and Herbert has the arm to get him the ball almost anywhere on the field.

Our offense clearly will be a different animal this season. No question Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle will get lots of touches, but I do believe we will be a more balanced offense this season. I have yet to mention RB De’Von Achane, who at some point will show the NFL his speed and smooth running style. This will truly be a RB by committee situation, with Mostert at least for now the lead back, but I think plenty of touches for Achane, Ahmed and the rookie Chris Brooks. Don’t be surprised if like in the preseason, Chris Brooks gets lots of carries deep in the red zone. QB Tua Tagovailoa has done all he can in the offseason to help himself stay healthy, and help lead this team an entire season of games. He added weight, learned through martial arts proper falling techniques to keep his head from crashing to the ground and as we saw in the preseason, he employed those techniques, and most importantly, they worked.

I think all of us here at FMU have looked at our defense and expected better. I think Vic Fangio looked at this opportunity through the same lens we do, this a defense just waiting to flourish with proper guidance. Fangio is exactly 5 years my senior, born August 22nd 1958. He’s been a defensive coordinator since 1995, no need to count, that’s 23 years (Fangio took a break from the NFL from 2006-2010). It’s hard for me not to believe that Fangio is the missing piece. Flores had some strong points on defense, learning from Bill Belichick in NE. Then Flores’ dismissal led the Dolphins to hand over the reins to Josh Boyer, who in my opinion, was too one dimensional and far too reliant on the zero blitz coverage scheme. I would expect less sacks from the safeties and more from the LB’s and DL. I think David Long is going to be great in this defense, both as a run stopper and helping in pass coverage. It’s not crazy to think we could have a top 10 offense and defense simultaneously.

We have a tough opening game, no doubt. The Chargers were the 2nd team last season to stymie both Tua Tagovailoa and our offense. It was the second leg of a dreadful west coast trip that began with a loss to the Brock Purdy led SF 49ers. Tua was sacked 3 times, and threw 2 INT’s against the vaunted SF defense. The offense was totally one dimensional, we ran 8 times against the Niners. Against the Chargers, it was no better. The Chargers hit Tua, but mostly took away his passing lanes which led to an awful 10 of 28 performance for only 145 yards. We made a slightly better attempt to run, but still had less than 20 carries (19). Despite having one of the best RB’s in the NFL in Austin Ekeler, Herbert was throwing everywhere, attempting 51 passes in all and completing most of them, 39 completions for 367 yards. We’re going to need to do a whole lot better on both sides of the ball to win this one. I expect more running from us, and hopefully that will open up the passing game for a few shots here and there. This would be a huge opening day win, and a big shot fired in the AFC towards the playoff race. I don’t have him in FF, but if I had Chris Brooks, I’d be inclined to insert him in the lineup because I think the kid may get a couple of TD’s in this one. In any case, we must have a better showing than we did on December 11th, 2022 against the Chargers last season.

  2. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I’m sorry, but we were a mere 9 yards away (Joshua Kelley) from allowing TWO RBs to rush over 100 yards on Sunday (the other obviously being Austin Ekeler).

234 yards yielded on the ground by a Fangio-led Defense is absolutely unacceptable, and very seldom does a team win when yielding over 200 rushing yards on Defense.

I’ve celebrated the win as much as anybody, but it’s time to get back to work. Fangio must fix our problem quickly, or Belicheat* will exploit it to the nth degree this Sunday night.

The Patriots were without both G’s Michael Onwenu and Cole Strange in W1 vs. the Eagles and it hurt them badly.. This is definitely worth monitoring this week.

It is the most 15+ yard plays by an NFL team in any game since Jan. 1, 2012, when New Orleans and Detroit both did it on the same day.

Who are the players on the Pats offense that jump out at you?
    ————-
THAT’S the problem… it’s like a ‘no-name Defense’, and Belicheat* always has them ready to contend with everybody. Matthew Judon is the only name that jumps out to me, other than their rook CB Christian.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I think ya meant to say Defense (not Offense).

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

No I meant offense, you were talking about us allowing 200 rushing yards to the Chargers. Mac Jones is not Justin Herbert and who are their receivers to be overly concerned about?

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

        Oh! Gotcha, man! My bad.

On Offense, I’d be concerned about their running game. See, Belicheat* KNOWS that the game is won and lost in the trenches.

I’m not concerned about their passing game or names there… I’d be concerned about ‘Joe Blow’ running for over 150 yards against our run-Defense.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’ll see, I’m not going to get too high or too low based on the opener. We’re not always going to have over 500 yards of offense and we’re not always going to allow over 200 yards rushing.

  6. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

I WILL say this much… if we’re playing ‘3-D chess’, I’m at all concerned about our run-D after this past Sunday.

No team is perfect in week one. I won’t put too much stock on this one game. Just keep improving and keep stacking wins against the AFC. Sometimes your team has to win shootouts. I’m glad we have the offense now to do so, instead of like the last 2 decades where we watched the defense carry the team until they couldn’t in the fourth quarter.

And the Center has a hammy,
which makes snapping very painful due to how the hips and thighs have to flex.

    from Pats Pulpit:

The New England Patriots have plenty to improve on following their Week 1 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. What’s at the top of the list is quite clear.

“I mean one, ball security is a big one,” center David Andrews said on Wednesday. “I think that’s No. 1: taking care of the football.”

New England had two turnovers in their season opener: a Mac Jones pick-six on their first offensive drive of the day and an Ezekiel Elliott fumble on the following possession. The turnovers resulted in 13 points for the Eagles, which played a pivotal role in the 25-20 loss

“Things we need to improve on are obviously ball security. Can’t give two turnovers away, especially early in the game,” fellow captain Hunter Henry added.

The two giveaways dug New England into a 16-0 hole just 13 minutes into the game against the Eagles. It’s a position the Patriots have found themselves in far too often over the past few years.

Avoiding those starts — which have been tough to dig out of— is another priority for the offense moving forward.

“We also just need a faster start,” Henry said. “So, those kind of go hand-in-hand cause the ball security [issues] was early in the game.”

With ball security a priority throughout the week, honing in on their fundamentals will be the key for success for New England.

“Going back to your fundamentals, executing in those times,” Andrews explained.

“Just got to get back in the lab and lock in on the fundamentals,” Elliott said after the game. “Lock in keeping that ball nice and tight and get ready for next week.”

The Patriots will have their first chance to right their wrongs this Sunday night against the Miami Dolphins. Fresh off a 36-point performance in which the Dolphins piled up over 500 yards of total offense, New England’s offense knows they need a better and more consistent performance in order to come out on top.

“We need to score some points, that’s for sure. That’s the biggest thing going against an explosive team like this,” Henry said. “They did it all year last year and then obviously came out the gate last weekend and were firing on all cylinders and putting up points.

“Think that’s a big thing for us — we’re going to have to score and execute well. And start fast like I said, too. Going against a team as explosive and as tough as this is a big challenge for the offense.”

The way things are set up in the offseason, opening day really is the first time the starters really get a chance to play a lot of snaps. The overall quality of football should start getting better for everyone the next few games. It’s go time, every game matters.

Lamar also had one of the worse QBR games of his career sunday. It was great that all the”Great” QB’s didn’t look great and our week armed game manager lit up the scoreboard.

The funny thing about a lot of people who don’t really watch our games but act like they know everything is, Tua is more gunslinger than dink and dunk.

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Right? The dude average 10.4 yards per attempt. More than a yard more than anyone else. He lead the league last year with 8.9 so it’s not a one game anomaly.

I think it’s great that MM came in and didn’t “have to have his own guy” He looked at Tua with unbias eyes and saw what he could be and is helping him to be that player.

Makes sense he doesn’t need that much practice, he knows his role. He’s been in this system for years.

I hope we unleash Achane in NE though.🙂

      • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It would be cool if we do and he breaks our for 150+ yards.

I am willing to bet that MM is trying to do anything but what he put on tape this week.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Bingo! We played in 21 personnel 44% of the time against the Chargers. Maybe we want go more 11 since the Pats play the most single high safety.

What we do well on offense is make things look the same but it’s not. Then our speed takes over and Tua getting it out fast is part of that.

  87. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We were wrong to doubt the quarterback, to paint him as injury prone, to diminish him as a product of the system, to take digs at his fitness. Did you see the game-winning touchdown he threw against the Chargers on Sunday? A goal-line fade to a wide receiver the size of your middle school basketball league’s power forward? That isn’t a throw for a puppet quarterback. That’s a one-putt through the windmill on hole 18 of the world’s most ridiculous mini-golf course. He did it with time winding down on the road with one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL sitting on the opposite bench.”

Maybe we should be giving some credit to OC Frank Smith for working in tandem with MM. They’re building around Tua and speed. 2 seconds is what we want in the passing game. Our running game is flow and traps. Fast backs who can get 4 yards quickly. Our passing game isn’t afraid of 3rd and 10, never mind 3rd and 6.🙂

This was in the same stadium a booth ATC spotter believed Bridgewater stumbled after he was hit on his first snap of the game when we played the Jest last year and was taken out of the game. So what’s the point of spotters?

I know it’s old news, but I still can’t get over how much of a POS Flores was. You’ve got this high character, coachable kid in Tua and you go out of your way to sabotage his career. Then sue the league when you lose your job because of it, blaming racism.
