2023 Season – Game 3 – Broncos @ Dolphins

The Dolphins finally kick off the season at Hard Rock Stadium after 2 road games to start the season. 2 impressive ones, one in LA against the Chargers, a 36-34 shootout victory, and then a more methodical 24-17 against our division rival New England Patriots. Even after the 2 victories, I still feel like we haven’t seen the defense thrive like I expected it to. We were gashed for over 200 yards on the ground in LA against the Chargers as well as giving up 34 points. In Foxborough, we surrendered half the points, but the defense has not looked dominant in any way, shape or form. They have made plays to seal games, and I suppose that’s the important thing, and at 2-0, I’m not going to complain too much, but I’d love to see this defense become what I hoped it could be.

If I told you before the season that LT Terron Armstead was going to miss the first 2 games, and that the Dolphins offensive line would have only allowed 1 sack in those 2 games, would you believe me? This may be the biggest surprise so far. The offensive line has done their job, with the exception of the bad snap issues that have plagued center Connor Williams. The shame of it is Williams is an excellent blocker, but it’s only a matter of time where a bad snap hurts us. Our run game has been excellent, when we actually run the ball like we did against the Patriots. Mostert bulked up some 15 lbs and he looks great this season. Mostert has 158 yards on 28 carries for a very nice 5.6 YPC, and he already has 3 rushing TD’s. RB Salvon Ahmed has been serving as 2nd string, but he’s now dealing with a groin injury, so De’Von Achane will now be the 2nd string RB as he has recovered from his shoulder injury. I’m excited to Achane, although props to Ahmed for simply making it impossible to not see that he makes plays and although he’s not physically imposing like Chris Brooks or super fast like Mostert or Achane, he gets the job done and looks slippery and elusive so far.

At WR, it’s been a lot Tyreek, especially in game 1, but as I told you, and you probably already knew it anyway, Belichick was going to do everything he could muster to keep Tyreek Hill from beating them. Tyreek still caught a TD but was much quieter compared to his 215 yard explosion against the Chargers. WR Jaylen Waddle looks like he will miss this game as he’s still in concussion protocol. Not sure which WR will replace Waddle if he can’t go, but Erik Ezukanma has been primarily used as a rusher in a somewhat similar role to WR Deebo Samuel. He’s not the type of guy that will be a downfield threat, and either is River Cracraft or Braxton Berrios. Jaylen Waddle makes it easier for the aforementioned Berrios and Cracraft to work underneath the coverage because Waddle requires attention and protection deep, so it will be interesting to see how we handle this if Waddle can’t go Sunday.

How about a huge high five and major props to LB Andrew Van Ginkel. This guy never quit, never gave up, and has carved himself a role on this defense. It’s clear Vic Fangio regards AVG very highly as he took tons of snaps in game 1 playing as the nickel LB and an inside LB, garnering a shocking 75% of snaps on defense. Jaelan Phillips did get in a limited practice yesterday, so he’s trending in the right direction as he deals with a back injury sustained in practice last Friday. More props coming, I feel like Raekwon Davis has been much more active and visible in the first 2 games. I do have concerns, although after 2 games, there’s not necessarily enough data to feel like this is a trend, but the 2 safeties, Jevon Holland and DeShon Elliott have the most tackles, 25 and 17 respectively, followed by 2 more DB’s, Xavien Howard and Kader Kohou. That’s not necessarily sustainable. Ok, let me get this out, I’m tired of seeing Eli Apple allowing receptions to anyone and everyone. If we’re going to draft a guy in the 2nd RD (CB Cam Smith), get the guy ready to play, because it’s so frustrating to watch. We jettisoned a former 2020 1st RD pick, Noah Igbinoghene and traded him for a former 2021 2nd RD pick (CB Kelvin Joseph), so please can we get either or both of those guys in there???

The 0-2 Denver Broncos make a late September visit to Hard Rock, and the heat could definitely be a factor in our favor. Sunday’s temperature should be about 85-88 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms (imagine that, a thunderstorm in FLA). While the Broncos are 0-2, they have lost both games by a total of 3 points, losing 17-16 to the Raiders and 35-33 against the Commanders, both at home. QB Russell Wilson has bounced back nicely from last year’s dreadful season. He has 5 TD’s to 1 INT, and has completed 68% of his passes in Sean Payton’s offense. RB Javonte Williams is back and Samaje Perrine is his backup. TE Greg Dulcich who was expected to have somewhat of a breakout season has been injured so TE Adam Trautman has taken his place while he’s out, but is not on the injury report this week, so he’ll be back. WR’s Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy are a talented WR duo. The Broncos defense struggled last week surrendering 35 points to the Washington Commanders. We all know Javonte Williams is hard running back, so we have to contain him, and Russell Wilson has been thriving early on, we have to take him down and make him uncomfortable. Rookie WR Marvin Mims has flashed and last year’s UDFA receiver Brandon Johnson has also made a splash.

At home, in September, this is a game the Dolphins should win. If the heat is a factor and the thunderstorms don’t quench the heat, we need to win this game, our first home game of the season. On the flip side, the Broncos come in a desperate team after losing 2 very close games to start the season. Waddle being out isn’t a good thing. Once again, that will be something to watch as to who replaces Waddle, and if he makes an impact. We may opt to run the ball more, and I’ve yet to mention FB Alec Ingold, who has been a feisty player and brings some nasty, some meanness to our offense, which definitely is welcomed. As I mentioned, De’Von Achane who is healthy may get more touches and I would like to see us continue to give Raheem Mostert a bunch of carries, at least 15-20. Achane can get touches both in the run game and passing game, and I hope he gets a few targets so he can find some room to run. He can be a HR threat with the ball in his hands anywhere on the field. Let’s hope this is Armstead’s debut, although Kendall Lamm has earned some trust for sure. Let’s also hope we do rest Waddle and have him healthy next week, it’s a long season. I also hope Jaelan Phillips is healthy enough to make a splash this week as well.

Right, so my reply was to your question. If you watched the game, you saw Wilson step away from the pressure all day long and throw complete passes

So what you’re saying is Wilson stepped away from would be sacks to throw complete passes

  13. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

So you can count Tyreek in this or not, doesn’t matter, he’s so good he’s going to get catches and yards anyway, but maybe not so many, but anyway just in general,

McDaniel when he was hired said it was his job to find what each player does best and call those plays for that player to do that. So for Reek that’s like a dozen plays.

A guy who played for him 8-10 years ago said he actually does that and that that is why he loved playing for him. He had his best year with McDaniel as his coach.

I think a perfect example of that is the TD that Robbie Chosen got. He’s fast, but he’s a limited player. There’s only a small number of plays he can get separation on.

I can just visualize Coach flipping through his mental rolodex of plays and reminding himself of what Robbie does best as soon as he knew he would need to call him up from the PS. Down and distance … situation match … blah blah of course, but BOOM.

From Robbie’s perspective, I think he’ll run through a wall for McDaniel who called him up off the PS, showed trust in him on the field, called his most favorite play in the world, and let him look that good on national TV.

You look at River Cracraft and you see the same thing. Cracraft has maybe 2 or 3 routes he can run successfully in the NFL. Basically all of his catches are some form of the same square in flat cross. Whether for RZ TDs or crucial 1st downs, McDaniel calls those for Cracraft, and they both know he can do that one thing. So does Tua.

But it’s all disguised so well.

  14. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

All sacks are pressures, some pressures are sacks

The more pressures you have the more disruptive you are to a QB

When a QB scrambles out of the pocket you generally take away half of the field, some QBs like Wilson thrive outside the pocket

Rock, how many throwaways did Wilson have?

  15. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

Dallas got beat yesterday in a trap game…on any given Sunday, after looking great the first 2 weeks

I don’t want any rewards, praise or anything else for the Fins until the dealing is done in February, and don’t forget they haven’t won a damn thing, since I left FL

Moving back to FL before the season is over, just saying

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

What Mike E is saying is so important because of who the QB is next week.

If you do not get Josh on the ground, he can still complete a pass from any angle or distance, even with a guy draped on his legs.

And yet, what the others here are saying about pressure is also true for next week.
That QB threw 3 picks in a game this year and has thrown many INTs when he is mentally challenged.

In fact, although Mike E is perfectly correct to say that a sack ends the play with no further damage against the defense,
it is also true that a sack prevents an INT, whereas a pressure often causes an INT.

And a pick gives the ball back to an offense that can
literally put up 70 points in the NFL.

  17. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Because one should keep arguments alive…this is what “pressure” gets most often.

“ When blitzed in Jacksonville Sunday, Stroud completed eight of 11 throws for 130 yards and two TDs. When facing a regular rush, he was an efficient 12 of 19, without the difference-making TD plays. Add to this the fact he had two injury replacements at tackle and didn’t get sacked, despite the 11 blitzes from Jacksonville.”

  18. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Steve – maybe, maybe not. We have to get to the QB more than we have if we want to be a better defense. I’m glad that when I listened to the Joe Rose show on WQAM, he said he thought the defense would be better and it hasn’t been as good as he expected. FWIW, Omar Kelly agreed.

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

I think we can all agree, but that was with Ramsey playing

We’re 3-0, just had a dominant performance and our best D player hasn’t played a down yet, pretty scary for the rest of the league

  19. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The 70 points should scare the DCs of other teams, but it’s just a big flashy number.

If it had come off a bunch of junk, it would not be so scary.
The other team did not lose 2 QBs or throw 4 pick-6es or give up 2 KO returns.

That 70 came off fundamentally sound and reproducible offense.

What is really scary is those 2 pictures:

The one above that Wyo posted showing tacklers littering the ground
as a 4.3 40 guy sprints in free space.

    and

That Acho quote that we had the defense so confused and well blocked that the RB scored untouched and had a 320 pound blocker out in front blocking AIR.

That 70 was not a bunch of fluke plays. That was solid, sound football.
The OL blocked and gave up ZERO sacks and the TEs blocked and the WRs blocked.

The QB had more TDs than INCs and
his first incompletion was off the WR’s fingertips in the THIRD quarter..

    • steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No more is that true, than the Mostert receiving td where Achane came in motion and Tua shoveled it forward to Mostert

When I saw that play it looked like a Friday walk thru with no D on the field, either would’ve scored

Easy to call plays when mostly everything works

  20. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

Naples – just as you may get an INT off a pressure, you could get a fumble off a sack, and that will be behind the LOS, not 20-50 yards downfield. Pressures are hit or miss, sometimes they have an impact, sometimes they don’t. No QB likes getting sacked

As we head to Buffalo, I think this team will be able to get focused because: 1) it’s the team we have to get past to win the division, and 2) it was that first Buffalo game where Tua got concussed, 3) we had a lead in that playoff game in the 4th qtr (on the road, in the snow) with our 3rd string QB. Fins will be very motivated to show the Bills what they are with everyone on offense healthy.

Put pressure on Allen to be the hero, to keep pace, and he’ll force the ball. The stats this week were so much fun, but this game is HUGE (could give us a 2 game cushion in the division).

Again, I hope that didn’t offend anybody. It’s really a good analogy to what we’re talking about regarding sacks, pressures, etc.

  64. Wyoming85's avatar Wyoming85 says:

I wonder if those are just RB pressures?

  65. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

We just dropped 70 points on Denver and we are 2.5 point underdogs this Sunday. WTF? Give the points and take their money!

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

It’s about our Defense and playing in Buffalo. Still… DISRESPECT!

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Bills whooped up their last two opponents too. Both teams know this game will go a long way to dictating who is the team to beat in the division.

If we go into Buffalo and win, we may not be the underdogs again in any game this year.

  66. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Well that’s good news. At least we have options.

Cornerback Eli Apple, who left the game to be examined for a concussion, is fine and not in concussion protocol, McDaniel said.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I didn’t even realize he was one of the injured. I really hope Williams and Phillips are back, but Williams is a groin so he may not be. I have no worried about Waddle; he’ll play.

  67. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Not worried about defense yet. It has gotten better every week. 34 points week 1, 17 week 2 and 13 week 3. 234 yards on the ground week 1, 88 week 2, 65 week 3. 0 turnovers week 1, 2 week 2 and 3 week 3. D is getting better.

So why was Jimmy G allowed to go back in the game when he had a concussion?

  70. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I saw a story that Chad Henne declined an offer from the Jets to come out of retirement when Rogers went down. Good on him!

  71. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Last year, the Dolphins registered 72 plays of 20-plus yards. They already have 19 such plays — including seven against the Broncos — through three contests in 2023.

I have some fest questions. In the past I’ve seen info about tailgate, transportation etc etc. Not so much this year. Any info I missed? Are we on our own? Should I rent a car?

      Don’t rent a car.
There will be a bus to the game I’m sure but you’d be able to ride in with us. Unless you hate me when you meet me lol. My wife is nice though.
I have a present for you , I’ll be there on Friday with it.
There will be plenty of transportation to get to Dave and Busters on Saturday and during the day on Saturday it’s assumed you would spend the day at the beach and up and down the Broadwalk 🤷‍♂️
Don’t sweat a thing just get down there 👍

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Definitely will be a tailgate. I usually set up a group text as we draw closer. This way we can coordinate where to meet up on game day. In terms of transportation on game day Toba has arranged a van/minibus for people but I have not seen any details on that as of yet. I will try to find out and let you know

    • manitobafinfan's avatar manitobafinfan says:

Don’t rent a car to go to game no … we will be arranging a shuttle…

Been sidetracked and date is coming up on us quicker than anticipated

I guess I will put this out now :

Please advise who wants/needs a ride gameday .. I believe 20.00 each (subject to confirmation)

Ken, to go along with what you posted about the defense if you look back despite teams moving the ball on us when we had to “nut up” we’ve met every serious challenge in a big way defensively not the least of which was holding them to 3 when it was 14-7. The end of both the Chargers and Pats game and after Tua threw the puck deep against Chargers, Kohou was insane. I’m not worried about our D either they’re still figuring stuff out too.

Rock – did you feel like either of our QB’s were under duress? Pressure stat is overrated.

    Sacks >>>>>>>> Pressures

No one is saying a pressure is better than a sack, but pressures come more often and have more of an effect on the game

While it’s true, that if you get 1 sack per game throughout your career you’re a 1st ballot HOFer, it’s the pressures that really matter because they effect a lot more plays

To see what’s BS or not you have to look at the extremes on one end for sacks player A gets a sack on the first play every game, then sucks a bag of dicks the rest of the game, player B gets no sacks, but is all over the QB all game long, which is realistic, you could go the the extreme of 5 sacks, but that’s not realistic

In reality though you can’t be a high sack guy without getting your share of pressures, so they go hand in hand

    Rest, heal, repeat.

Strip sacks resulting in turnovers are hurries resulting in INTs. Fucking awesome…lol
