2023 Season – Game 3 – Broncos @ Dolphins

The Dolphins finally kick off the season at Hard Rock Stadium after 2 road games to start the season. 2 impressive ones, one in LA against the Chargers, a 36-34 shootout victory, and then a more methodical 24-17 against our division rival New England Patriots. Even after the 2 victories, I still feel like we haven’t seen the defense thrive like I expected it to. We were gashed for over 200 yards on the ground in LA against the Chargers as well as giving up 34 points. In Foxborough, we surrendered half the points, but the defense has not looked dominant in any way, shape or form. They have made plays to seal games, and I suppose that’s the important thing, and at 2-0, I’m not going to complain too much, but I’d love to see this defense become what I hoped it could be.

If I told you before the season that LT Terron Armstead was going to miss the first 2 games, and that the Dolphins offensive line would have only allowed 1 sack in those 2 games, would you believe me? This may be the biggest surprise so far. The offensive line has done their job, with the exception of the bad snap issues that have plagued center Connor Williams. The shame of it is Williams is an excellent blocker, but it’s only a matter of time where a bad snap hurts us. Our run game has been excellent, when we actually run the ball like we did against the Patriots. Mostert bulked up some 15 lbs and he looks great this season. Mostert has 158 yards on 28 carries for a very nice 5.6 YPC, and he already has 3 rushing TD’s. RB Salvon Ahmed has been serving as 2nd string, but he’s now dealing with a groin injury, so De’Von Achane will now be the 2nd string RB as he has recovered from his shoulder injury. I’m excited to Achane, although props to Ahmed for simply making it impossible to not see that he makes plays and although he’s not physically imposing like Chris Brooks or super fast like Mostert or Achane, he gets the job done and looks slippery and elusive so far.

At WR, it’s been a lot Tyreek, especially in game 1, but as I told you, and you probably already knew it anyway, Belichick was going to do everything he could muster to keep Tyreek Hill from beating them. Tyreek still caught a TD but was much quieter compared to his 215 yard explosion against the Chargers. WR Jaylen Waddle looks like he will miss this game as he’s still in concussion protocol. Not sure which WR will replace Waddle if he can’t go, but Erik Ezukanma has been primarily used as a rusher in a somewhat similar role to WR Deebo Samuel. He’s not the type of guy that will be a downfield threat, and either is River Cracraft or Braxton Berrios. Jaylen Waddle makes it easier for the aforementioned Berrios and Cracraft to work underneath the coverage because Waddle requires attention and protection deep, so it will be interesting to see how we handle this if Waddle can’t go Sunday.

How about a huge high five and major props to LB Andrew Van Ginkel. This guy never quit, never gave up, and has carved himself a role on this defense. It’s clear Vic Fangio regards AVG very highly as he took tons of snaps in game 1 playing as the nickel LB and an inside LB, garnering a shocking 75% of snaps on defense. Jaelan Phillips did get in a limited practice yesterday, so he’s trending in the right direction as he deals with a back injury sustained in practice last Friday. More props coming, I feel like Raekwon Davis has been much more active and visible in the first 2 games. I do have concerns, although after 2 games, there’s not necessarily enough data to feel like this is a trend, but the 2 safeties, Jevon Holland and DeShon Elliott have the most tackles, 25 and 17 respectively, followed by 2 more DB’s, Xavien Howard and Kader Kohou. That’s not necessarily sustainable. Ok, let me get this out, I’m tired of seeing Eli Apple allowing receptions to anyone and everyone. If we’re going to draft a guy in the 2nd RD (CB Cam Smith), get the guy ready to play, because it’s so frustrating to watch. We jettisoned a former 2020 1st RD pick, Noah Igbinoghene and traded him for a former 2021 2nd RD pick (CB Kelvin Joseph), so please can we get either or both of those guys in there???

The 0-2 Denver Broncos make a late September visit to Hard Rock, and the heat could definitely be a factor in our favor. Sunday’s temperature should be about 85-88 degrees with a chance of thunderstorms (imagine that, a thunderstorm in FLA). While the Broncos are 0-2, they have lost both games by a total of 3 points, losing 17-16 to the Raiders and 35-33 against the Commanders, both at home. QB Russell Wilson has bounced back nicely from last year’s dreadful season. He has 5 TD’s to 1 INT, and has completed 68% of his passes in Sean Payton’s offense. RB Javonte Williams is back and Samaje Perrine is his backup. TE Greg Dulcich who was expected to have somewhat of a breakout season has been injured so TE Adam Trautman has taken his place while he’s out, but is not on the injury report this week, so he’ll be back. WR’s Courtland Sutton and Jerry Jeudy are a talented WR duo. The Broncos defense struggled last week surrendering 35 points to the Washington Commanders. We all know Javonte Williams is hard running back, so we have to contain him, and Russell Wilson has been thriving early on, we have to take him down and make him uncomfortable. Rookie WR Marvin Mims has flashed and last year’s UDFA receiver Brandon Johnson has also made a splash.

At home, in September, this is a game the Dolphins should win. If the heat is a factor and the thunderstorms don’t quench the heat, we need to win this game, our first home game of the season. On the flip side, the Broncos come in a desperate team after losing 2 very close games to start the season. Waddle being out isn’t a good thing. Once again, that will be something to watch as to who replaces Waddle, and if he makes an impact. We may opt to run the ball more, and I’ve yet to mention FB Alec Ingold, who has been a feisty player and brings some nasty, some meanness to our offense, which definitely is welcomed. As I mentioned, De’Von Achane who is healthy may get more touches and I would like to see us continue to give Raheem Mostert a bunch of carries, at least 15-20. Achane can get touches both in the run game and passing game, and I hope he gets a few targets so he can find some room to run. He can be a HR threat with the ball in his hands anywhere on the field. Let’s hope this is Armstead’s debut, although Kendall Lamm has earned some trust for sure. Let’s also hope we do rest Waddle and have him healthy next week, it’s a long season. I also hope Jaelan Phillips is healthy enough to make a splash this week as well.

We need to unleash Achane again this Sunday. He just needs a crease and bam. Achmed looked that way in preseason, F our backup linemen and WR’s were blocking for Achane on some of these stupid runs.

Jerry Jeudy was tearing us up, sporatically, it just didn’t go anywhere.

LOL I Couldn’t take it any more. I googled Zach Wilson Sacks himself. It’s worth a laugh if you haven’t seen it. Almost as good as but fumble.

Kelly: Achane’s Emergence Should End Dolphins Tailback Shopping
De’Von Achane’s breakout performance should motivate the Dolphins to make the rookie a featured weapon in Mike McDaniel’s offense
    OMAR KELLY12 HOURS AGO

The toothpaste is already out of the tube, which means there’s nothing left to do but use it at this point.

That’s the approach and mindset the Miami Dolphins coaches, players and front office figures need to take with De’Von Achane’s breakout performance in the Dolphins’ 70-20 blowout over the Denver Broncos.

When a football player – any player, on any level, not just a rookie – turns his 22 touches into 233 yards and four touchdowns, he’s clearly special.

And special players should become a focal point of the offense.

“This is my second time ever having 200 yards,” Achane said minutes after his breakout performance. “My last game at [Texas] A&M I had 200 yards.”

He’s referring to the 215 yards and two touchdowns he gained on 38 carries in a Aggies win against Louisiana State last year.

But that’s old news. Welcome to the big leagues, kid.

    Achane surprises his own teammates

This year, despite only playing in two games, Achane’s 11.3 yards per carry average leads all NFL tailbacks. It won’t stay that high forever, but he’s certainly in the conversation for the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year honors now.

But he needs to continue to get at bats.

The biggest question heading into Sunday’s AFC East showdown with the Buffalo Bills is whether Miami will continue to utilize the rookie?

“Our offense is speed, and we have weapons everywhere from receiver to running back to QB,” Achane said. “When we go out there and are clicking on all cylinders, we have something. We’re capable of doing a lot of great things on this team.”

Sunday’s performance should give Achane, who used his postgame interviews to correct the world on how to say his last name [it’s A-chan ,not A-chain], an opportunity to prove his four-touchdown performance wasn’t a fluke, or a byproduct of the offensive line’s dominance.

“This is the NFL. This is different. It’s not college,” Terron Armstead would tell the rookie during the buildup to the Broncos game, where he inherited the No. 2 tailback role because Salvon Ahmed injured his groin the previous week.

Achane’s response to Armstead, the Dolphins’ Pro Bowl left tackle, was “say no more.”

And the Texas A&M standout clearly proved he’s capable in his second NFL game, turning on his afterburners every time the Dolphins offense got him to the second level.

That’s what world-class speed can do for an offense, and the Dolphins have plenty of it.

“To be able to come in as a rookie, to do that, it just speaks volumes on the type of character that he has,” said Raheem Mostert, the veteran tailback who mentors all the youngsters in his room.

Time to invest in Miami’s backs

The Dolphins have to continue to utilize the speedster because he embodies the future of the franchise.

That means even when Jeff Wilson returns from the rib and thumb injuries that got him placed on injured reserve, and Salvon Ahmed’s groin injury heals enough for him to return to the field, Achane should continue to get a respectable amount of touches.

It also means the Dolphins can end their flirtation with Indianapolis Colts tailback Jonathan Taylor, who had demanded a trade from the franchise that drafted him, and is eligible to come off the PUP list after next week.

Why give up resources to add a talented back when Miami already possesses the best run game in the NFL after three weeks?

The Dolphins explored acquiring every top-tier tailback available via free agency or trade this offseason, but can now put the team’s resources and attention elsewhere to fill other team needs because the future looks bright at tailback if Achane continues to develop.

McDaniel’s obsession with Achane pays off

That seems to be the plan since McDaniel has been obsessed with the speedster who ran the fastest 40-time (4.32) for tailbacks in the 2023 NFL draft.

On the second day of the draft, McDaniel targeted Achane as a needed weapon, and celebrated when he was still available with pick No. 84.

Owner Steve Ross ended their draft-day call by remind the rookie to “Bring your speed, baby.”

    He’s doing just that.

“McDaniel coached him up for sure. He’s taken all the coaching and he’s been very attentive and just really elevated [his game],” said right tackle Austin Jackson. “I love to see that type of stuff out of him. It’s nice to see him in a game for the first time. That was my first time seeing him in live bullets.”

Outside of a universal understanding of how to properly pronounce his name [again, it’s A-chan, not A-chain], all that’s missing from the rookie is a proper touchdown celebration, according to his teammates, who collectively plan touchdown celebrations that McDaniel reviews in front of the team after each win.

“I’ve got to get De’Von to do a celebration. He said he has one,” Mostert said. “I’m like, man, you scored four touchdowns, you’ve got to celebrate, do something, stand out. We’re going to work on that this week for sure.”

  6. Krishna says:

I don’t think Achane gives up his touches any more…

One thing we learned about each NFL team in Week 3: Dolphins run better than pass, Cowboys’ major weakness
What did we learn about each team after the Week 3 games?
    By Jeff Kerr
    14 hrs ago•17 min read

    Miami Dolphins

The run offense may be more lethal than the pass offense: The Dolphins rushed for 350 yards and averaged 8.1 yards per carry in their demolition of the Broncos. The pass offense is dominant with Tua Tagovailoa, but the rushing attack may actually be better. Miami is first in rush yards per game (188.3), rush touchdowns (eight), and yards per carry (6.1). Raheem Mostert is averaging 5.9 yards per carry and De’Von Achane is averaging 10.9 yards per carry. Chris Brooks is averaging 7.3 yards per carry! These numbers are inflated because of the Denver game, but Miami rushed for 145 yards against New England’s defense the week prior. The rushing attack is just as dangerous as the passing game — and maybe even better.

  8. Krishna says:

I’d love to see us run the ball over Buffalo!

  9. steveccnv says:

When I said I didn’t like Dan Campbell as our HC, I wanted an innovator, MM is the type of mad scientist I was hoping for

McDermott is half-right. What the Dolphins are doing isn’t almost revolutionary. It’s legit changing the game — and how the NFL‘s customers experience the game.

I hate PFF’s pay wall. They allow you to read the first page which is usually the top two teams or players that they are reviewing and then block the rest. Here is the teaser from their O line ratings.

    • Dolphins soar to No. 6: Miami is up six spots this week after a dominant Week 3 performance from their offense. The line now ranks second in the league in pass-blocking efficiency.

There is not a problem. Why present it that way?
We have 5 RBs that have demonstrated success in NFL games in this offense.
How can this be a problem?
RBs get banged up, but we don’t need to worry about our ONE GUY getting sidelined and ruining our run game.
There’s no jealousy among them or controversy here.

      Ditto at WR.

  17. Rockphin says:

Boy I hope we are rocking the Panthers at the fest game enough that we can get the wave going like they did during the Donkey’s game. That is always fun.

  18. Rockphin says:

    ▪ Great stat from ESPN analytics expert Seth Walder, offered up on X (formerly Twitter): “In 2017, NFL offenses put a man in motion at the snap 4% of the time. Today, it’s 20%. “But the 2023 Dolphins? 59% — the most by anyone since we began tracking in 2017 by a long shot. The Dolphins are averaging 0.16 EPA [expected points added] per play without motion at the snap and 0.50 (!) with it.”

  19. naplesfan2010 says:

I certainly hope we beat Buffalo, and I think we will,
but it is a road game against a legit SB contender,
so if we play well but still lose,
one game won’t ruin our season.

KC and Buff have already lost one,
and no one is saying their season is lost.

With the next 2 teams we play after the Bills,
    we could still be 5-1,
and that is a very nice opening to the year.

  20. Mike E. says:

One game at a time. We’ve already won 2 good road games this season. Of course the media will destroy us if we come up short in BUF because it’s more fun to make that narrative, rather than realize this is our 3rd road game in 4 games, and we’ve already accomplished as much as you can in 3 games.

  21. naplesfan2010 says:

The main thing to me in the Bills game
is to come out of it with no injuries to our main stars.
That way even if it’s a loss,
it’s just one game, and it won’t affect the rest of the season.

Even if we lose 3 games this year,
it’ll still be a great season. 14-3 is awesome!

    Nobody goes UNDEFEATED!!!!

  22. boulderfinfan says:

I’m optimistic about this game. They’ll be very motivated to beat buffalo finally and win the AFC east.

  23. Rockphin says:

Buffalo is going to be a big challenge for us. Their D is playing lights out. They have only given up 35 points in three games. (The Dolphins have given up more than twice that amount 71) They are second in the league in net points Just behind us. But we were upside down in that stat until we laid an improbable 70 points on Denver.

    I played a preview of the game on Madden 24 last night. The quarter went like this;

Bill receive and have an 11 play drive that could not be stopped. Allen 5/5 and a TD.
Dolphins receive and go for 6 yards on a PA pass, next play Mostert breaks one for a TD. 2 plays 30 second.
Bill receive the next kick and have a 10 play drive helped by a roughing the passer call on 3rd down, finish with a TD Allen 6/6 on that drive
Dolphins receive and on the first play run for 8 yards up the middle. Next play TD to Tyreek Hill. 1:40 second drive
Next drive Bills go 3 and out because of a false start and a hold.
Dolphins receive the ball and Achane goes to the house on the fist play, a dump off to the flat. 75 yards for a TD.
Bills get the ball and have a 9 play drive for a TD Allan 6/6 on the drive.

Half ended tied Buff held the ball 24 minutes out of 30!

Second half was more of a typical game with the D stepping up for each team on both teams punting back and forth to each other a few times. Dolphins up by a FG with 4+ minutes left and Allen drives down the field looking like he is gong to score easy. ( I was cussing mad) and then throws a pick at the 10 yard line to Kader Kohou! Dolphins take a few plays to get down the field and kick another FG to close out the game with a 6 point lead.

  38. Rockphin says:

We SHOULD be able to run on Buff, especially because they play with lighter players on D on most downs. (nickle) and they have to respect our speed always. Dare them to creep those safeties up. LOL

Toba – I wonder if Boulder will need a ride. Not sure where he’s staying

  51. herdfan says:

This hospital is hilarious. I’m sitting in my moms room, it’s across from the nurses station. I hear a lot of raised voices etc out there, look to see what’s up, this man is standing there wearing nothing but socks. 🙈

  52. Brian in NY says:

I’m nervous about this game. Typically we fall flat in Buffalo- we haven’t won there in 7 years. This game would be huge: 2-0 in the division while Buffalo would be 0-2.

  53. mf13ss says:

    Herd,

Prayers up for your mother for a quick and complete recovery.

  54. Ken says:

Feel better Herd’s mom. Hang in there Herd. Hopefully worst has passed

We’re going to find out on Sunday if our O-Line is the real deal, or if it’s just been masked by playing ‘fast-n-furious’. The Bills’ secondary is a venerable bunch and will play our receivers very tight.

  58. The Flying Pig says:

I think it might be blowout in our favor

    • Brian in NY says:

I don’t know- we are 2-9 against Allen and those wins are by a combined 6 points. I think it’s going to be a slugfest

  59. Mike E. says:

Almost forgot to watch the Republican debate. Now I wish I forgot to watch the Republican debate. 😳

    • Tim Knight says:

They’re lost still pretending it’s the 1950s not understanding people are not all about that anymore. Leave us alone. Democrats too, enough!

  60. Brian in NY says:

    Nick Wagoner

On respective run games in Sunday’s matchup:

#Cardinals are tied for 1st in NFL in yards BEFORE contact per rush at 3.68/attempt.

#49ers are 2nd in NFL in yards AFTER contact per rush at 2.36.

The wild part? Arizona is tied with and the Niners trail the same team: Miami

  61. Mike E. says:

Tim – They’re no more lost than the other side, but I have to say I don’t
feel like our country is going to be in good hands in 2024. Let me make it clear that we’re not in good hands right now, that’s crystal clear.

Twice, what ever you did was good because I haven’t been able to log in on my phone until now. Thanks!

  64. bailbondmike says:

Herd, sorry to hear about your mother. I am in Oregon right now. Flew in Monday. My sister had a heart attack as well. She’s doing better now after they put in 3 stints and is supposed to get a pacemaker/defibrillator today. They say she really doesn’t need the pacemaker but mainly have it for the defibrillator.

She was very lucky. She was at an event selling the jewelry she makes when she collapsed and it just so happened a doctor came walking by and started CPR within 2 minutes of her going down. Her cardiologist said that doctor saved her life and saved her from having any significant brain damage.

I prayed for your mother last night will continue to send prayers. Stay strong!

  65. CavalierKong says:

Sending positive vibes for your mother, Herd.

  66. bailbondmike says:

So nervous about the game this weekend. I don’t think we will come in flat but it’s going to be a fight. I fear they are going to exploit our DL with Josh Allen escaping and getting a lot of yards on the ground. Pressures won’t work this game unless we keep Allen contained.

  67. bailbondmike says:

Cav, did you see the video I posted a while back with the smoked pork belly burnt ends with a cherry glaze?

It looked delicious. Never tried that before but going to.

  68. CavalierKong says:

I would be shocked if we blow out the Bills. They have better special teams and defense than we do.

Our special teams unit has been crap, and has either given up points or cost us points in all 3 games this season. No reason to think that changes.

They will play complimentary football and be good in all 3 phases. I think our defense plays well enough to win, but our ST gives or costs us some points to keep this close. If our offense plays the way we expect them to, then we get a hard fought win.

    • bailbondmike says:

I agree. No way this is a blowout. We have to contain Allen/Diggs and win the turnover battle. We don’t do that and we could have a hangover Monday. I also see Knox getting a bunch of targets while we try to contain Diggs and Davis.

  69. bailbondmike says:

We barely beat 1-2 Chargers and had to hold off the 1-2 Patriots. We blew out an 0-3 team who gave up after 3 quarters. Buffalo is much better than those teams and is at home. We have to be great in all facets and not turn the ball over.

  70. bailbondmike says:

I wonder if Bills will try to defend us like the Pats did with an umbrella over the top

  71. bailbondmike says:

The Dolphins and Bills have combined to account for 31 plays where a player has reached 18 mph or faster this season. The Dolphins account for 27 of those plays.

    Damn!

  77. naplesfan2010 says:

    BBM
yeah, you could say we haven’t beaten good teams,
but the Bills beat the Commanders who have a nobody for a QB
and the Raiders who have an idiot for a HC,
and they gave up 22 points to Zach Wilson!!!
and lost to the Jets with Joshie throwing 3 picks.

  78. naplesfan2010 says:

    oh gosh
get well wishes for your sister BBM …
they can do wonders with pacemakers nowadays.

  79. naplesfan2010 says:

a Dolphins fan family says they are rethinking their old tradition of everyone taking a tequila shot for every TD we get.

  80. naplesfan2010 says:

The Bills have a very difficult remaining schedule.
So do we, but just sayin’

They still have to play the Patriots twice who give them trouble
and go on the road at the Eagles, Bengals, KC, and the Chargers
plus the Jags, Bucs, and ‘Boys at home.

    oh and us twice, too.

Plus they have a rematch with the jest to whom they’ve already lost
and a game with the Broncos, who as we all know is no slouch,
as they have a great HC who can adapt and make in-game adjustments.

  81. Rockphin says:

  84. Tim Knight says:

  85. naplesfan2010 says:

Who the hell do these politicians think they are with their big egos playing with the solvency of our government and the paychecks of thousands of innocent middle class workers?

  86. Rockphin says:

We need to start with a balanced fn budget, instead of running out of money every 6 months and having to go through this bullshit political chicken. WTF is wrong with “us” we give billions away to other countries and then have to BORROW that money plus plus plus.

The hard-line conservative that are holding the countries credit rating (and the world economy too because they are connected) hostage need to stop. Fight for the cuts you want in other ways. FN give away everything Dems need to stop trying to push every buy a vote bs program through as an attachment to every bill.

The lying Fn scum need to stop this bullshit blame game. Fuckers wont vote to extend the debt limit unless they can EXTORT concessions and then turn around like the lying hypocrites they are and blame the president? “This will be the president’s shut down” NO last time I checked the president doesn’t get a vote in congress. YOU and ONLY YOU will cause the US to default. (the Cons extorting the rest of us to get concessions)

  87. Rockphin says:

Unrelated, but still very important. Tommy Tuberville needs to go. He is single-handedly endangering our country by blocking ANY military promotions. The rest of congress need to get him off whatever boards he is sitting on and take his power away. He is a real and present danger to the US right now.

    • naplesfan2010 says:

He’s trying to impose his religious beliefs on everyone else,
which is against the First Amendment to the Constitution.
He is willing for our soldiers to die, so he can get his way.
He’s a spoiled brat trying to buy the votes of one-issue voters.

  88. The Flying Pig says:

    Jevon Holland porn

    • naplesfan2010 says:

And now all the WRs are going to run slower and go down faster because they don’t want Holland causing them to fumble.

It’s hard to run full speed and fight for yardage while protecting the ball.
That’s when most fumbles occur, especially the strip type.

  89. naplesfan2010 says:

I agree that we need to spend less federal money and lower taxes, but the time to debate how best to do that is during the budget-writing process, not when it’s time to pay the bills for the programs the politicians all gave each other to buy special interest votes back home.

  90. naplesfan2010 says:

The way McDaniel is coaching, the other teams have tons and layers of things to prepare for. Can you imagine the DC meetings about how to stop all the different elements of our offense? the motion, the speed, the weird blocking schemes, the shovel passes, the WRs blocking, the up-tempo, quick release, the pin-point throws…

And the OC has to worry about Wilkins and Holland and X and Kohou and van Ginkel and that’s just the main ones.
But that’s a potential play ruiner at each level of the defense.

  91. The Flying Pig says:

Tyreke Hill ran the wrong route in his TD

  92. The Flying Pig says:

Positive vibes to Herd’s mother and BBMikes sister

It’s not easy dealing with family crisis – but I’m sure families really appreciate you both

  93. bailbondmike says:

Appreciate the well wishes! Sister got pacemaker in this morning and they are talking about her going home tomorrow. The turnaround is crazy. Heart attack on Saturday, 2 stints on Monday, another stint on Wednesday, pacemaker on Thursday and home on Friday.

Hope to hear good news from Herd also.
