2023 Season – Game 4 – Dolphins @ Bills

It’s only the 4th week of the NFL season, but this matchup against our division rival Buffalo Bills is quite an interesting matchup. The Bills, despite having a 2-1 record have allowed and NFL 2nd best 11.7 PPG. On the flip side, the Miami Dolphins offense have scored an NFL leading 43.3 PPG, mostly due to the 70 point output last week against the Denver Broncos. What makes this matchup so fascinating to me, the Dolphins defense was supposed to be an improved unit, perhaps even a top unit, while the Bills were expected to take a step back after losing LB Tremaine Edmunds in FA to the Chicago Bears. So far, the Bills are just a hair behind the Cleveland Browns who have allowed an NFL low 10.7 PPG, while the Vic Fangio Dolphins unit has allowed 23.7 PPG good for a below average 20th in the NFL. So something has to give here, with the NFL best offense against very close to the best NFL defense. Oh, by the way, the Bills are 2nd in the NFL in scoring, right behind our Dolphins at 30.3 PPG. Dolphins fans who are looking at this game as an easy Dolphins win simply aren’t looking at this game realistically. The last 3 meetings have been decided by 3 points or less.

One of the most surprising changes in the Buffalo Bills offense is the return of their rushing attack. We all know how dangerous QB Josh Allen is rushing the football, but last year’s 2nd RD pick, James Cook has 267 yards, while QB Josh Allen has just 89 yards rushing. Perhaps even more of a turnaround, the Dolphins rushing attack has been even more impressive, no doubt mostly due to the offensive output against the Broncos last week. While the Bills have 448 yards rushing, the Dolphins have 565 yards rushing, and the 15 lbs of muscle that Raheem Mostert added are paying dividends, as Mostert has 240 yards rushing and an eye opening 6 TD’s. The debut of rookie De’Von Achane was off the charts, 208 yards on just 19 carries for an absurd 10.9 YPC. Passing is not quite as even. Josh Allen has a pedestrian 90.3 passer rating, in large part due to his 5 TD’s and 4 INT’s with 728 yards passing. On the flip side, QB Tua Tagovailoa has a 121.9 QBR with 8 TD’s and only 2 INT’s and 1024 yards passing.

As you all know, I just hate when our players get caught in the hype machine, and our young 3rd year LB Jaelan Phillips has been absolutely crushed by it. It appears as if Jaelan Phillps will miss the Buffalo game, and it looks likely that C Connor Williams may also miss this contest with a groin injury. Williams still has a chance to play, and although LT Terron Armstead only logged a limited practice yesterday, he’s likely to play. Unfortunately, this is the wrong week to have anyone on this O-line out, especially considering how well this unit has performed. Good news is WR Jaylen Waddle has been cleared from concussion protocol and got in a full practice yesterday. If Connor Williams can’t go, Liam Eichenberg will likely play C, and while his snaps are more accurate than his predecessor Connor Williams, we all know his blocking hasn’t been up to snuff. Like I said, bad week to make O-line substitutions.

While the Dolphins were pouring it on with a record breaking 10 offensive TD’s last week, The Bills defense pounded Commanders QB Sam Howell all day long to the tune of 9 sacks, 4 INT’s and 1 forced fumble and fumble recovery. Truth is, if we’re being honest, I know I expected a much better defense here in Miami with Vic Fangio. It’s also very early in the season, we haven’t yet completed a 1/4 of the season and it can definitely take time for a scheme to take hold. It’s not that the defense has been awful, it just hasn’t been better than last year, which in and of itself is a disappointment. The Bills have 12 sacks, our defense has 8, not a huge disparity, and much like our offensive numbers are skewed by last weeks Broncos game, the Bills are defensive numbers are aided by their dominant game against the Commanders.

To be clear, it’s still very possible that C Connor Williams plays, he did log a limited practice yesterday, so I wouldn’t rule him out. It’s just that you don’t want to exacerbate an injury any further and lose that player for an extended period of time, but if he can go, as I previously mentioned, this is not the week for an O-line substitution. For some bad news, both WR’s River Cracraft (shoulder) and Erik Ezukanma (neck) both did not practice, but I remind you that Jaylen Waddle will be suiting up. This means opportunities for Berrios who has already been wonderful, and Robbie Chosen who caught his first TD last week in a Dolphins uniform. Our old friend AVG, Andrew Van Ginkel has played so well this season, and surely has had a much larger role in this defense, both week 1 where he played inside, and then of course last week because of Jaelan Phillps injury. I would like to point out something that concerns me, our 2 top tacklers thus far this season are DB’s. Safeties Jevon Holland (33), and DeShon Elliott (22) are tops, and not too far behind are CB’s Kader Kohou (16) and Xavien Howard (15). I would think this is not a good trend, and hopefully once the Fangio defensive scheme takes hold, this will even out.

I really don’t know what to expect, although I would be surprised if this was an offensive shootout. I feel like these divisional games are much more measured and careful, and although last year’s playoff game was a 34-31 shootout of sorts, I think the scores will be lower. There’s a lot on the line for such an early season matchup, but the Bills don’t want the Dolphins to have a 2 game advantage on them, and the Dolphins would like nothing more to potentially be the only undefeated team in the NFL and also hold a 2 game edge on their division rival Bills, who have won the division each of the last 3 seasons. I expect us to try and run the ball often, and don’t expect another 300 + yards rushing for the Dolphins. Josh Allen loves playing against us, he owns us, he’s 9-2, but more importantly, 6-0 at home in Buffalo. For perspective, I’ll remind you that our last 3 games against the Bills have been decided by 3 points or less (34-31), (32-29), and a Dolphins victory (21-19). All I know is this is MUST WATCH TV!

  1. mf13ss says:

For roughly 5 seasons or so, it was our Defense that kept us in games while our Offense totally failed us. NOW, it’s the polar opposite in a matter of 1 season.

Vic Fangio is universally respected as one of the very best Defensive minds (if not the very best) in the modern game. What’s going on?

  2. Rockphin says:

Is Drew Lock still sporting the Sandy Duncan pixie haircut? (I’m not allowed to say Lesbian bob anymore)

  3. Rockphin says:

I think our D can handle this O next week. One bad thing, the crowd will probably be more sympathetic to them in Miami….

I still think someone is spiking his testosterone supplements with estrogen

  5. herdfan says:

Visited my mom tonight at the hospital. First of all, she doesn’t have much short term memory. BUT, she did have enough to know she watched the Dolphins game yesterday. So she starts asking me, what happened to the Dolphins yesterday?  Didn’t they score a lot of points the other day? They didn’t yesterday  Did you watch?  They didnt do very well at all yesterday. What happened to them?  5 minutes later, same conversation.  I’m usually pretty good, try to go along, but the third time around, told her I can’t have this conversation again. 🤦🏼‍♀️

    • manitobafinfan says:

That is hard Herd . Even without involving/reliving a Fins loss..I went through that with my mom as well .. for the first few years I just thought she was hammered when she phoned … then as I realized was Alzheimer’s I felt kinda bad for it …

      • herdfan says:

It’s hard, but I meant that to be funny.  The entire time, my sister was standing where my mom couldn’t see her and was cracking up. You have to laugh when the opportunity is there.

      • ukfinfan says:

I took it as funny, but as you know, I’ve been there with dad. Sometimes you have to laugh or you’d cry. I hope your mum doesn’t become disinhibited too – that’s a whole new recipe for disaster and nervous laughter too!

Positive vibes to Mama Herd and BBM’s sis.

  6. ukfinfan says:

This struck a chord (as I mentioned on gameday when I said this must have been how the Broncs felt)

Herd, we had similar situations with my sister. She is doing really well considering. She road to the beach west of Portland with my other sister she lives with and her son who came back on emergency leave from Italy. He’s in the USAF, an F16 crewchief/mechanic. Anyway, this just 8 days after heart attack, 3 stints and a pacemaker. She’s had an amazing recovery. She is just really sore as she has 3 cracked ribs from the CPR.

I continue to pray for your mother!

  10. bailbondmike says:

I really wish we could have drafted the local Pensacola product in CB Devon Witherspoon. He played his high school ball right behind my house almost. I can hear the band every game.

He would be starting as a rookie opposite X for sure (not counting Ramsey).

So far in 3 games (missed 1st game), he has 23 tackles, 2 sacks, 4 PD’s and just took his first NFL INT 97 yards for a TD. He’s a CB who hits like a safety.

  11. bailbondmike says:

    Keeps getting worse for Pats.

Patriots OLB Matthew Judon (biceps) scheduled for surgery, expected to miss at least two months

  12. bailbondmike says:

Seahawks tie franchise record with 11 sacks in blowout win over Giants
    ——————-
If we don’t get at least 4, we truly have a problem on defense.

  13. Wyoming85 says:

The Giants may be without RB SaQuon Barkley, OT Andrew Thomas, C John Michael Schmitz this week.

They could match us with our C, and OT missing!

  14. Wyoming85 says:

  15. Mike E. says:

BBM – I think we truly have a problem with our defense

    • ukfinfan says:

I agree with this sentiment but remain hopeful we are proven wrong.

I read somewhere in pre-season that VF was less them impressed with what he had inherited in respect of fit to his scheme. Based on below and the rest of what we had to endure Sunday night, he seems hellbent on making players fit scheme as opposed to the other way around. I’m not saying the latter method would work anyway, but the former has been significantly less than stellar to date.

  16. ukfinfan says:

    MM sighting on Miami Beach?

  17. The Flying Pig says:

I think our defense will come around

The problem is it might be very late this season

  18. The Flying Pig says:

    Lol

  19. Mike E. says:

UK- I would love to see our defense come around, I just don’t see any reason why it will. Can’t believe Cam Smith can’t see playing time in this defense.

  20. bailbondmike says:

Fangio really got out schemed vs Buffalo. How can you go at the Bills with basically 2 DL in the game. What were we running? 4-2-5? It’s more like a 2-4-5.

That was a lot on Wilkins and Seiler. Raekwon Davis only played 23 snaps, Ogbah 17 snaps and Pili 5 snaps and that was mostly when the game was out of reach, especially for Pili.

Ogbah has only played 74 defensive snaps in 4 games. If I did my math correctly, that is over $54,000 he makes per snap at the current rate. That’s a bit expensive.

    • Tim Knight says:

Teams are keeping us in nickel whether you call it 2-4-5 or 4-2-5. It looks good on paper but we’re not very good at it right now.

  21. CavalierKong says:

The Bills game is behind us. We all know the defense needs to be a shit ton better from the coaches coaching to the players playing.

This twit sums up everything that matters right now in one sentence:

  33. Rhino says:

Just a “for fun” what-if … I really really wanted us to draft Parsons #6 (I think mf13 did as well). I love Waddle … but watching our defense against the run, and our LBs in general … and Parsons getting footing as “best player in the NFL” debates …

Would our OVERALL team be better with Parsons than Waddle?

That means considering the degree to which our offense drops compared to how the defense elevates.

I am fine rolling with Waddle (like I have a choice) lol … and I know we didn’t have Hill yet so we really needed a #1 for Tua who could run routes and get separation … so the situation heavily favored WR. My question is a ‘hindsight’ question, but I just felt Parsons was the biggest game changer who could be drafted in top 10 that year. (Player over position?)

  34. bailbondmike says:

This is funny and a true story.

Some Ukraine soldiers captured a Russian tank just built in 2021. They were having some kind of issue with the engine or something. The Russian company who built the tank actually had a hotline for technical support where Russian soldiers could call to trouble shoot any problems with the tank. So, the Ukrainians called the number and the Russian tank company was more than helpful and talked them through the issue.

At the end of the phone call, the Ukrainian tank commander, asked that they make better equipment so their war trophies they capture will be more adequate. He then identified the unit he was with and ended with “Glory to Ukraine”.

    That’s almost priceless.

We should have traded for Roquan as I wanted us to do. Instead, we passed on him and later traded for Brandon Chubb.

  38. mf13ss says:

Okay, now that I’ve got my shit reset and back to normal (after altering it to find AVG), I must issue 2 corrections from above.

Jerome Baker: #53 of 57 LBs
    and
Bradley Chubb: #31 of 63 EDGEs

My point remains: we should have traded for Roquan instead of Chubb.

  40. Rockphin says:

OMG Not even funny MF13. I just had a discussion at lunch before he alert and the guy was adamant that everyone should turn off their phones or go outside so that they were not controlled by the sub-sonic mind control that was going to be embedded in the “test”.

Where do people come up with this crazy ass shit. How are so many people so gullible while believing that everyone else is the gullible person for NOT believing in CRAZY.

    • pheloniusphish says:

Ha – I avoided their mind control by going deep into the Newfoundland wilderness where the alert mind control carrier couldn’t reach me! Take that mind controllers!

  42. Tim Knight says:

Nik Needham and Robert Jones could be back this week.🙂

  43. bailbondmike says:

M13, where does LB long rank? Just curious.

  44. bailbondmike says:

M13, we also could of had LB Bobby Wagner for a mere 5.5 mil. That was the amount of the 1-year deal he signed with the Seahawks.

He was everywhere Monday night. Against the Giants, he had 17 tackles (9 solo, 8 asst) and 2 sacks.

Through 4 games, he is 3rd in the NFL in tackles with 50.

  45. Capt. Stubbs says:

Hopefully we’re having tackling clinics all week. To me those missed tackles deflated us

  46. Rockphin says:

I just went to play Madden and there is a big update before I can play. I don’t think I want to play after this update.  They are really fast to downgrade the dolphins and really slow to reflect good play

  47. Capt. Stubbs says:

So you sacrificed cousin Vinny. All in the name of the Phins

  48. Mike E. says:

Captain!!!! What up my man? You Festing with us? Hope all is well!

  49. Brian in NY says:

I expect  to see us obliterate the Giants and put up 40+ points vs them

  50. Rockphin says:

This is some completely scripted. Fucking bullshit here.  I have quit and reset this game four times because on the first pass, Tua throws a pick four games in a row and stupid like like a safety is 30 yards away and then catches up with Tyreek Hill in two seconds  backpedaling the whole way

  51. Rockphin says:

So guys be aware. According to madden, it is going to pour ass rain the entire game.  And Tua is going to throw an interception on the first pass.

  52. Mike E. says:

Forget the alert, if I see that stupid fucking Jardiance commercial one more time, I might kill someone

    • Tim Knight says:

That whole dance thing cracks me up. It’s really swell.😂

    • Rockphin says:

OMG 🤯 I despise that commercial. If I had dick rot, like leprosy of the dick, and the only cure was Jardience I would stick it in the garbage disposal and be done with it before taking that shit that’s how much I hate that commercial.

  53. Rockphin says:

Problem solved. I just ran on every down for a touchdown.  Fuck you Madden

  54. Ken says:

Connor Williams expected back this week

  55. Capt. Stubbs says:

    Hey Mike E,
I wasn’t sure if I’d make it. However, it turns out I will be making an appearance lol

    • Mike E. says:

Awesome!! Always good to see you. I’m not sure how big a crowd we have, I haven’t seen a Stanger Fest post announcing who’s coming in a long time. I do know Herd is going to make a rookie appearance at this one!

  56. Capt. Stubbs says:

Do we have a big group going to the Fest?

    • son of a son of a shula says:

David Long is #39 out of 50 LBs

Something I noticed after lowering the snap count threshold? David Long and Elandon Roberts are tied at #49 out of 81 LBs.

    • mf13ss says:

What does this mean? Nothing gained, nothing lost between Long and Roberts… at least not so far after 4 weeks.

But obviously, Roberts hasn’t seen the field as much as Long has.

    M13,

The defense is fucking atrocious. If Fangio can get it fixed it doesn’t matter how good our offense is, we won’t be going anywhere. We need to win the next two game without question, but the Philly game looms as our Litmus test- the knock on this team last year was we couldn’t beat playoff caliber teams; if we go 5-1, then lose to Philly, the narrative will continue and deservedly so.

    • Brian in NY says:

      *can’t

I’m really worried about the D. We haven’t shown any ability to stop a good offense this year.

Thanks and hope to see some of you!

Afraid so. I’m in Canada hunting moose. Trip was originally planned for 2020, but COVID postponed it until this year. Couldn’t miss it since the next window is 2027.

    Way to go drg.

  78. Capt. Stubbs says:

Manitoba, thanks for the lookout. I’ve got transportation though

  79. drg says:

Awesome!  It will be great to meet a bunch of you.  We will definitely swing by the tailgate.  We usually do road games on the west coast so my boys are sick and tired of watching losses.  They want to see another 70 point game, haha.

  80. Rockphin says:

Capt. Stubbs, Did I read you are staying at the Margarittaville too? So am I. I figured I make more of a mini vacation instead of just going out Sat night and to the game on Sunday. I get to MV Friday afternoon checkin. I may come down earlier in the day to hang with the crew depending on who / what they are doing.

    • Mike E. says:

How long are you staying in Hollywood?

      • Rockphin says:

Friday through Sunday (I have Monday off too, but I don’t have a room for SUnday night, so I will drive the 40 miles home after being dropped off at MV after the fest

  81. Capt. Stubbs says:

Yeah, I figured the same. Decided to go a little nicer this time. There will be plenty of kool-aid and greenery going on. We’ll definitely have to hook as well as everyone else. OPEN BALCONY to all

    • Rockphin says:

AWESOME! I just read above the DRG is going to make the Fest too! Very excited to meet the Mob I haven’t met yet!

  82. Mike E. says:

Needham and Robert Jones are practicing at least on a limited basis. So that’s progress.

  87. pheloniusphish says:

Hold up…is the Fest this Sunday or next?

  88. mf13ss says:

Ya know, Connor Williams’ absence last game just gave him more leverage on his wanted contract extension for more $$$.

  89. mf13ss says:

    Rockphin!

I have an experiment you may (or may not) want to conduct. Trade for Roquan Smith on Madden, and see how much better our Defense gets with him.

  90. mf13ss says:

    Mon Capitan Stubbs,

ALWAYS great to see ya here! One of these years, I WILL be down for a Fest. Looking forward to meeting ya, sir!

    • Capt. Stubbs says:

Me too my friend. I was hoping to see your name on the list

      • mf13ss says:

My biggest problem? I have to submit my vacation time for the next calendar year before the current year ends.

By the time the Fest date is agreed upon, it’s usually too late for me to make any kind of change.

      • mf13ss says:

Even with 6 weeks of vacation, it’s difficult to make changes once the Fest date is announced. Sucks!

      • Capt. Stubbs says:

Yeah that would make it difficult

  91. mf13ss says:

So the G-Men allowed 11 sacks last week. If we can’t get half of that this Sunday, and against their banged-up O-Line, we’ve got MAJOR problems.

    • mf13ss says:

And if I’m Vic Fangio, I’m absolutely starting AVG over Bradley Chubb this Sunday.

      • mf13ss says:

However, I see a problem: Chubb knows the Fangio Defense like the back of his hand (from Denver), and AVG will be moved back to MLB/ILB.

This could become problematic, as I’m sure Fangio is loyal to Chubb.

  92. Tim Knight says:

Besides the poor tackling we’re seeing the other issue is teams are keeping us in nickel and we’re not very good at it right now. Van Ginkel is one of the starting off ball LBs in nickel and with Phillips out he’s been playing more edge. So that’s not helping with continuity but we couldn’t stop the Chargers running game with that situation either. Everyone has to get better.

  93. Capt. Stubbs says:

I think the front 4 needs to get home faster. Not enough pressure therefore leaving the back exposed

    • Tim Knight says:

Then when we do get pressure and the ball comes out we allow short gains into big ones. Every phase has to up their game.
