2023 Season – Game 5 – Giants @ Dolphins

The Miami Dolphins return home from an unsuccessful trip to Buffalo, NY. You can look at this game from many different perspectives. You can say it was a tough task traveling to Buffalo for the 3rd road game in 4 games. You can say in general Orchard Park is a house of horrors for the Dolphins, which it is. You could also look at it from the viewpoint that if this team is really ready to compete for a division title and beyond, we need to be able to not only compete with teams like the Bills, but beat them. Well, this past Sunday we did neither, at least not past the beginning of the 2nd quarter, where the score stood at that time at 14-14. The Bills then ran away, scoring 17 unanswered points and eventually finished on top with a lopsided 48-20 victory.

One game however, does not mean that all is bad in Miami. Credit Bills HC Sean McDermott for finding a way to shut down the Dolphins offense, something the Patriots did as well up to a point. The bright side is, I have no concerns with our offense. We lost a couple of role players, WR’s River Cracraft and Erik Ezukanma, Cracraft more in a receiving role, while EZ was used in the rushing attack and seldom used as a receiver. Both players are on IR so they will both be out a minimum of 4 games. In the mean time, the Dolphins acquired former Steelers and Bears WR Chase Claypool for a 6th RD pick in 2024, the Dolphins receive Claypool and the Bears 7th RD pick in 2024. This offense is evolving constantly, and now LT Terron Armstead will spend some customary time OUT, he’s also now on IR with multiple injuries. We have seen the emergence of rookie RB De’Von Achane, and he’s been nothing less than electric. His stats are off the charts, but lest we not forget how well Raheem Mostert looks this season. I’m also impressed with big back Chris Brooks from BYU, and RB Jeff Wilson is set to return shortly from injury. RB Salvon Ahmed is also healing up, so that’s one very crowded backfield, and how the touches are divided are anyone’s guess. Achane has been used sparingly despite the outrageous returns on his limited touches, and to be fair, they might just keep it that way to keep him healthy. This may also benefit Raheem Mostert who is now 31, and although he’s bulked up and looks like a different back, he’s got quite the injury history, so splitting carries might be the recipe to keep both healthy and productive.

OK, finally, what about the defense? I loathe to talk about the defense, or lack of defense if you will. This defense scares no one. It’s toothless. We’ve been gashed on the ground, through the air, every which way. ST’s has allowed a blocked FG attempt and has allowed a return TD. The super hyped Jaelan Phillips wasn’t much when he played, and now he’s likely to miss his 3rd straight game. The defense has 10 sacks after 4 games, and if I told you after 4 games that Andrew Van Ginkel would be leading the team with 3 sacks, you’d have laughed at me. AVG is doing his best while Phillips is out and while Bradley Chubb is largely ineffective. The other 7 sacks are distributed with a sack each for Long, Ogbah, Chubb, Wilkins, Sieler, and Kohou, and hype-boy Phillips shares 1/2 sack with DB Justin Bethel. The Dolphins defense is allowing just a hair under 30 PPG, a far cry from what we all expected with the Vic Fangio hiring.

The Jonathan Taylor rumors went wild, this after the Dalvin Cook rumors went wild. OK, the problem on this team is not the run game, or the players in the run game. Now that Taylor is eligible to return, he’s eligible to come off the PUP list, and appears fully healthy from his January ankle surgery. We just traded for WR Chase Claypool, so how long before Taylor to Miami starts again, and it probably already has, although I’ve read the Packers really want him. I said we didn’t need him before, and I’m sticking to that position. We could potentially be better with Taylor, but I think we’re more than fine with what we currently have.

Back to the dreaded defense. Cam Smith, ZERO defensive snaps, has only played special teams. Our 1st pick in this year’s draft, #51 (2nd RD pick), can’t seem to crack the lineup ahead of Eli Apple for one. I love Kader Kohou, what Dolphins fan doesn’t? Kohou is a nickel back, and actually, good news is on the frontier, because Nik Needham can potentially be back as well as OG Robert Jones. Both have been designated to return in which the team has a 21 day window to be activated, much like the Colts Jonathan Taylor. It would be wonderful for Needham to get back, he’s a favorite of mine because he always seems to step up to the challenge before him. I don’t know whether Vic Fangio just feels that Cam Smith isn’t ready, doesn’t like rookies, I’m not sure, but to see Eli Apple lining up and playing like Eli Apple has, it’s disheartening to fans that Cam Smith hasn’t received a chance.

It’s looking Connor Williams may miss another game with an injured groin muscle. Both Robert Jones and Nik Needham logged back to back limited practices, so they’re not on the radar for this week. C Connor Williams also has 2 limited practices, so we’ll see whether he suits up against the Jints, who by the way will be without 3 starters on their O-line, LT Andrew Thomas, LG Shane Lemieux and C Jon Michael Schmitz, while RB Saquon Barkley will be a gametime decision. Our beleaguered defense may actually have a favorable matchup, stay tuned. You have to figure we’ll rest Phillips in this one as he’s still bothered with that oblique injury. I expect our offense to get back to normal, not necessarily 70 points, but 30 or more points in this one. The NY Giants are league last scoring only 11.5 PPG, while allowing 30.5 PPG on defense, just behind our Dolphins defense. Hopefully the Dolphins get their mojo back and come back again next week to Hard Rock for the Fest at 4-1, still atop, either tied or maybe alone after a battle with the Jacksonville Jaguars who got back on track against the Atlanta Falcons to go to 2-2.

All I’m saying is coach is smart enough to not put away a weapon that is 2nd in the league in yards behind ‘reek
    ————-
Undeniably true. I just think that WR1 Kupp is going to take away from Nacua’s touches for 2K. We’ll see!

I don’t care about the final stats because so many guys are feasting. As long as we win a lot of games is all that matters. Like MM said (paraphrasing) our entire focus this offseason was having the most yards ever after 5 games. 😂

  3. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    OMG OMG OMG

TYREEK HILL IS IN SOME DEEP SHIT!

He called him momma a “little beast” on TV. He wasn’t thinking. He was talking about the guy who took the ball from his Mom in the stands, but what came out was “you don’t want to mess with that little beast”

If she is anything like my mom he is going to get some papow.

  4. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

While running some errands today, I saw a middle-aged white woman (not that ANY, of that matters, okay?) wearing a fresh and clean Jaylen Waddle ’72 throwback aqua jersey!!!

My lil’ nephew was with me and I said to him, “LOOK AT THAT! LOOK AT THAT!”. He thought I was crazy for a minute, LOL!

Yes, up here in Pennsylvania there are a LOT of Miami Dolphins fans!

  5. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

The emphasis on team blocking is really apparent. This is a well coached team even with some of the flaws at times.

  6. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Rewatching the game, I caught the trip on Achane on the replay since I was looking for it (didn’t catch it yesterday).

The refs really had a couple of big misses in a short time; first that big missed trip that actually caused the fumble, and it was only a few plays later they mistakenly called us for too many men on the punt, forcing us to use a challenge.

  7. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This shit going down in Gaza is scary.

  8. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Who currently leads the NFL in rushing TDs after 5 games?

Raheem Mostert with 7 (tied with CMC)

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

I was going to throw in that he and Achane each have multiple receiving TD’s but I can’t find the info on ESPN because they only list TEs and WRs together in the receiving stats and don’t reference catches at all for RB’s in the rushing charts. I know they have two or more each.

  9. mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Perhaps I’m the only one here, but I truly believe that Coach McDaniel will make Chase Claypool a star once again.

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And we got him for a mere bag of donuts.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

If Claypool can’t get his shit together with this team he never will. Just join the fun young man.🙂

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

EXACTLY, man! He can do this!

      • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

And if he’s converted to TE, he’d be the new Vernon Davis of this generation… something the 49ers organization would know something about.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Why can’t he play the same role as what we wanted to do with Tanner Conner and Elijah Higgins? He’s 6-4 238 with 4.4 speed. He’s already shown he can make plays in the league. He really does have an opportunity to make our offense even more lethal.🙂

  10. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

It’s crazy how MM used Chris Brooks as a FB/TE yesterday. That video was crazy. Believe you me, that is going to morph into touches sooner or later, but in the meantime he is knocking sculls

  14. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

First play, big run by Achane, Jackson fakes his block to the end and then jumps out and blocks two different guys out of Achane’s way.

  15. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

First 3 plays Jackson has run 50 yards. LOL

  16. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Not all is good with 73 play. no not at all

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I’m just happy that I don’t really worry about our OL each week. They’re pretty good and finally well coached.🙂

  17. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

This crew was incompetent the whole having to use his challenge to dispute12 men on the field and the fact that it took a four commercial break to figure it out was just a fraction of the bad officiating. An OBVIOUS trip wasn’t called on the turn over by Achane and then they throw a bogus flag when we had 11 players on the field.

  18. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    LIGHTNING

Man that was a nice 7o yard run by Achane. He is a funny kid telling Tyreek that he wasnt that fast because he got caught.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

What was crazy about that play by Tyreek was he ran basically horizontal across the entire field and still beat them vertically for a chunk. He’s an amazing talent. So fast!

  19. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

    Achane 7 Td’s in 2.5 games.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

DAMN IT!! I think I saw the play when he got hurt while re-watching last night. Big ass fat man flopped on him AFTER the tackle by another D and Achane got up and jogged off, but had a pained look on his face. FAT FUCKER purposely flopped on him to injure him!

I realize that it’s probably never going to happen, but I’d really like to see the INT stat adjusted when it comes to QBs. Ya know, the passes that are either tipped by his receiver, outright missed by his receiver (between the hands), or just outright fluke INTs where the QB isn’t really responsible for it.

Drg, tail gate will be in the East Orange lot usually around section 23-25. An Orange pass will cost around $200 on line. There is “free” parking in lot 20 at Norwood elementary school. A free pass will cost around 50 bucks because you have to find one on line.

PFF had Howard as our lowest graded defender against the Giants. Would love to know how they figure that one, lol.

Eich was listed as our 3rd best rated pass protector. I assume he came in when Wynn got hurt, which was the beginning of the 4th.

So Eich blocked on 3 pass attempts…lol

    Rockfin,

My 16 year old would love an Achane jersey even if it will fit like a tent. He has a jersey collection on his wall. I’m happy to pay you for it also.

    Son,

Thanks for the info. I tried to post my contact info, but apparently this site won’t allow it.

In the stats schmatz category, KC currently leads the AFC having the better conference record, but since we play them head to head it should be all that matters, if we tie at the end, unless a 3rd team is involved

    Oh….

I was wondering. That sounds a lot like a bad 1980s country song….lol

Are you referring to David Allen Coe’s You Don’t Have to Call Me Darlin’-aka The Perfect Country & Western song? 😂

Fest prep is rolling (with help from folks like Ken and Toba).

Sat night is the usghe — Dave & Busters Hollywood from 6-10, or after if you want. Dinner there will be but drinks are on you.

Chef Wa Tailgate sets up at like 10 in the East lot (Ken needs your info for which spot).

Get your tix either at D&Bs or the tailgate, but pay in cash.

I just can’t seem to get lined up for the Fest this year, this weekend going to LA, next week my cousin and his wife, that went to the 2021 Fest, will be in Vegas, then on Saturday the 21st I’ll be driving to FL🙄
