Once again – Dolphins look small

It’s still one game in 17, and at 6-3 the Dolphins are far from being out of contention. However, one needs to accurately put in context exactly what we are in contention for. To win the division, sure, its definitely possible, likely even if the Bills lose tonight against the Bengals. Winning the division is nice, but we have tried to assemble a team with a very small window of opportunity to go all the way. As currently constituted, that won’t happen. At least I should say “shouldn’t happen”, because we haven’t defeated a good team with a winning record since September of ’22.

We got back Jalen Ramsey, Xavien Howard, Jaelan Phillips, Bradley Chubb and Andrew Van Ginkel are all healthy now and playing well, yet we still can’t close out a good team. The offense was more of an issue, and if I’m being honest, why was Raheem Mostert used so sparingly in this game until it was almost too late? Besides De’Von Achane, Mostert is our best RB, our most consistent guy. I know he’s a little banged up, but Ahmed and Wilson just don’t threaten the defense like Mostert does. He looked pretty darn fresh in the 4th quarter, I wish we didn’t save him until then because we squandered too many drives without him. Penalties have been a killer as well, and we escaped a penalty today that should have been called against AVG. It’s not that AVG was looking to hurt Mahomes, he actually turned away and hit him with his back, but the fact is, Mahomes was out of bounds when AVG ran into him and that’s a penalty.

I don’t want to hear the excuse that we had 2 OL out. Every team has subs somewhere, and the O-line was making plenty of room for Mostert in the 4th quarter. Tua had a subpar performance for him. Tyreek Hill dropped a big pass, but Tua with the game on the line let a pass slip out of hand and mishandled a snap, one which did not look egregiously off target. He said it himself, you can’t end a game for your team on a play like that. Another observation is we’ve had a few slow starts. Those of you that attended the Fest game know we were behind 14-0 after the 1st quarter. We scored 3 points against the Eagles in the 1st quarter. We scored 7 against the Patriots, and were shutout the entire first half against the Chiefs. If we’re going to defer, we need to do a better job in the first half because the really good teams put their foot on your neck and don’t let you back in the game.

What can I say, the narrative that we can’t beat the good teams will continue to exist as long as it’s true and accurate, and right now it’s 100% accurate. We look like a different team against the better teams, we’re tight, and we get shut down on offense, and sometimes it’s the defense that looks disinterested. Today, the defense did its best, but the offense was the weak unit that didn’t hold up their end of the bargain. It’s great to be the #1 ranked offense in the NFL, but it sucks when you can’t back it up against better competition. Who cares if we can score 70 against the Broncos when we can only score 14 against the Chiefs?

We have the BYE week next week. Last week we lost OG Isaiah Wynn for the rest of the season, and it’s likely the same fate waits for OG Robert Jones, who ironically just filled in for Isaiah Wynn after coming off this week. Hopefully, after 2 weeks of rest, RG Robert Hunt will be back, and be healthy for the rest of the season. Lester Cotton, who played RG today will probably slide to LG as long as Hunt as healthy. RB De’Von Achane should make his return in Week 11 at home against the Las Vegas Raiders. He will undoubtedly give the offense a huge boost, and when we split carries between the two backs, Mostert and Achane both really thrive. It doesn’t leave that vacuum every time Mostert comes off the field.

Listen, it sucks, if you have friends that are NFL fans like I do, you know they’re getting a hearty laugh at our team, and rightfully so. We have yet to look anything like a team to fear when the opponent has been top level. 48-20 loss to the Bills, 31-17 loss to the Eagles and now a 21-14 loss to the Chiefs. Just remember, the #1 scoring offense in the NFL at a whopping 33.9PPG, practically 34 points per game has scored 17PPG against winning teams. Forget the defense which on occasion has not played well, but the high flying offense seems to wither when challenged, and our young HC Mike McDaniel needs to find a way to stop that from occurring. That won’t be an easy fix, but it has to happen if we’re going to ascend to a playoff winning team. I think our defense is going to be good going forward, but the offense has to be as effective against the good teams as they are against the weaker ones. I needed to vent this, spew it out of my system, it’s cathartic.

It is not a meaningless stat when it affects your playoff ranking. It is why we are #4 of the 4 division leaders. If we were not the division leader, we would be the 7th wildcard wild card team behind the Steelers and Browns.

Yes, we can only play who is on our schedule. We played 3 good teams and couldn’t beat any of them. That is part of the reason why our SOV sucks and why we won’t win any tiebreakers.

Yeah, I agree and didn’t realize you said almost. lol

  13. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I guess I harp on “we haven’t beat anybody”, but as long as we keep beating who we are supposed to beat and get into the playoffs as a division champ I think we can beat anybody. Especially if our D stays healthy the way it is and we get some OL back in Hunt, Jones and hopefully Wynn.

  14. Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The AFC seeding thing is another reason why we need to beat good teams. Jaguars jump ahead of us because of they beat good teams, we don’t. Y’all can keep saying it doesn’t mean anything, but it does in more ways than one. You want to beat some good teams during the season so when you play good teams in the playoffs, you feel confident that you belong. Trust me, if we lose to every good team and still make the playoffs, we’ll be an early exit.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Beating the good teams doesn’t matter. It is strength of schedule that matters. We don’t control and you won’t know how that plays out until week 17. SOS now maybe very different from how it looks in week 17

The games we lost were all on the road, with 2 of the 3 injury ridden, including the Philly odd 10-0 penalty game

We’ll beat the Eagles in a neutral site SB

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We won’t be favored in Baltimore, but should be favored in every other game.

    • Rhino's avatar Rhino says:

I agree. Teams can and do get better over the course of a season. Our defense this year is a great example of that.
Ultimately, win the division … guarantees a home game in playoffs and take it from there. I will be cheering against other teams to help our potential seeding, but winning the division is a must for this team to be considered moving on to the next level.

    – Kong (from the last page) – 5 game-winning FGs as time expired to seal a win – an NFL record!
    – Herd from earlier ref “Country Roads” – apparently it has been going at Festivals/group-gatherings in Germany since at least the late 90s according to one fella on Twitter from the US presumably serving in the military there. We have adopted “Sweet Caroline” in the UK. Is this the way to Amarillo also v popular in the context of charities.
    – BBM ref Germans asking for a refund – I think you need to be a fan of an NFL team in a foreign country to fully understand why this would never happen. I’m lucky as I was able to make quite a few business trips and games in the US, but for reasons of expense (and jet lag), believe me, a game in UK//Germany is an absolute privilege, even if it was absolute shite. Let me just add, also, the Patriots were absolutely shite and Mac Jones will never recover from this!
I flew back from an exhibition in Germany to Wembey in 2007 for the first reg. season game outside NFL and it was the Fins Giants in an absolute slop fest. The pitch didn’t drain, a punt plugged like a javelin and the ball was a bar of soap with fumbles and miscues everywhere. We lost 16-10. Still loved it. There was a giant inflatable JT in London. Happy days

  22. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

I agree Jets may be out of contention by mid December and Rodgers/Jets won’t risk it.

Jets should get another loss this weekend as they are at the Bills in a revenge game for the Bills.

on the one hand, I think if the jest had beaten the Raiders, it might have given them hope to get ARod back and make a run for it.

But then again, losing on yet another stupid INT by Zach might make the NY FO think he’s hopeless, and they need to switch to Rodgers to salvage something of fan interest and build for next year.

I prefer our SOV dilemma to their QB debacle all day.

  23. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

The Bills are really fighting for their playoff lives. A loss tonight or next week against the Jest would be completely devastating for them. The rest of their schedule is brutal

    Cowboys
    At Chargers
    Patriots

Do we want the Bills to win to permanently shut the door on the Jets/Rodgers?

I’d rather give the Bills another loss.
That way they might not even be in our way in the playoffs.

Similar to Cincy. They’re so dangerous that I’d rather
the Browns and Steelers make the wild cards.

    and maybe Houston

    I don’t know.
    If the Bills win,

a very hard time making it to the PO as well,
so we’d be rid of both of them.

Hey about us having a rough tie breaker thing … how would you like to be the Patriots? They have such a strong SoV Or SoS that even though they’re close to getting a good draft pick they lose the tiebreaker to all the other teams down there.and get the worst pick of the bad teams.

  36. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

First tie breaker for seeding is W/L record, yes? SOV, SOS and all the rest of the bullshit stats are irrelevant if you have the better record.

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

They are VERY relevant because of how tight the AFC is running this year. There are 11 teams with 5 wins or more. (one game out)
The ENTIRE AFC has a better strength of victory than us. WE ARE LAST.
SOV is the first tiebreaker after conference win percentage.

      1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
      2. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
      3. Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
      4. Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
      5. Strength of victory in all games.
      6. Strength of schedule in all games

Phelon, the way things stand right now. ONE LOSS can cost us the playoffs

      It is NOT irrelevant.

SoS is the 6th tie breaker?

Besides, we are barely halfway through the season.

  38. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I can only find one SoV tie breaker use in NFL going back to 2000.
    2006 Giants over Packers.
It’s hard to find though, so there might be another one.

This tie breaking procedure is relatively new.

    In my childhood
I think they actually had a one-game play-in game to settle ties.
    (Before the merger)

    • Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

Well, they just changed the rule this year so you won’t find it going back to any year before this year. It used to be way down the list now it’s the first after positioning right after conference wins.

  39. Rockphin's avatar Rockphin says:

When was the last time the 6th tie breaker
    was actually used?
    Is it common?

For non-division winners, very very common. Almost every year. The wild cards always go to the fifth and sixth tiebreakers. The first three “tiebreakers” are just positioning.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

not sure what you mean by “positioning”
      but in 2022
      Zero
      tiebreakers went past the
      1st step
      which is Head to Head
as the Seahawks (9-8) beat out the Lions (9-8) for a wild card
because they beat them in the regular season and
the Dolphins (9-8) beat out the 9-8 Steelers
because we beat them in the regular season.

  40. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In 2021 there was only 1 tie among teams to get into the playoffs,
and it was also broken by the first tie-breaker (head to head)
because Philly (9-8) had beaten NO (9-8) during the season.

  41. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In 2020 all three ties were for seeding not to make the playoffs,
and all three were broken at the lowest by the second tie-breaker
    which is division record.

  42. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

In 2019 there were NO ties to get into the playoffs,
but 3 teams in the NFC finished 13-3,
and those ties were just for seeding and also broken by the first 2 tie-breakers.

Tonight, Russ really looks like half the man he used to be… minus his lone TD pass.

Good field position again for the Broncos. They have to do something with it
