2023 Season – Game 10 – Raiders @ Dolphins

The Dolphins play at home in the friendly confines of Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, where the Dolphins are at their best. In 4 games, the Dolphins have scored 174 points good for an absurd average of 43.5 points per game. The defense has thrived here as well, allowing 74 points in 4 games for an average of 18.5 points per game. We score 11 more points per game and allow about 6.5 points per game less. We’re better at home, of this there is no doubt. I’d love to fancy our team as a team that can win anywhere, but right now, we’re a much better team at home. This just signified the importance of not only winning the division, but having a good enough conference record to have home field is as many games as possible.

The Raiders are an up and down team, but mostly they’re a team that has struggled offensively. The Raiders decided Jimmy Garoppolo was their QB, and Garropolo who we all know can’t play a full season is OUT and their rookie 2023 4th RD draft pick Aidan O’Connell has a 2-1 record in Jimmy G’s stead. In total, the Raiders have scored 17.2 points per game, or close to half of what we have scored this season. The Raiders defense has been decent, allowing only 20.5 points per game, 4.5 points less than our Dolphins defense. There are two huge difference makers for both teams entering this game though. The Raiders have finally figured out they need to lean on their best offensive weapon, RB Josh Jacobs, while the Dolphins come in about healthier than we have been all season, and more complete.

In the last 2 games for the Raiders, RB Josh Jacobs has been a workhouse, helping the team to two consecutive victories over NY teams, first the Giants, in which Jacobs had a season high 26 carries for 98 yards, and then against the Jets with a new season high 27 carries for 116 yards. For the Dolphins, we’re getting back our secondary, and possibly for the first time all season, we’ll have a healthy CB tandem of Xavien Howard and Jalen Ramsey. In addition, we’ll have a healthy Safety tandem of Jevon Holland and DeShon Elliott. Our pass rush has come on lately, and a healthy Jaelan Phillips and a resurgence from OLB Bradley Chubb has got this defense playing better. Andrew Van Ginkel has taken on more of a secondary role, but still a big part of the defensive rotation. This is the defense we’d hoped for, now they have to stay healthy and shut teams down. This week, objective #1 is to limit Josh Jacobs. The Raiders don’t want to put the game on QB Aidan O’Connell’s shoulders, so if we shut down Jacobs, it could be a long day for the raiders offense who don’t do well when Jacobs isn’t getting lots of carries and thriving.

This week could be the return of a big offensive weapon for the Dolphins, RB De’Von Achane. There are differing reports everywhere, but there is a good chance Achane returns from a knee injury suffered against the NY Giants October 8th. Raheem Mostert has logged 2 consecutive limited practices but almost certainly will play Sunday. Of more concern is RG Robert Hunt, who looks to miss this game with a hamstring injury. Terron Armstead who played last week will start at LT with Liam Eichenberg at LG, Connor Williams at C, Lester Cotton at RG and Austin Jackson at RT. Not ideal, and Maxx Crosby is feasting this year with 59 total tackles (35 solo), 9 sacks, 13 TFL, 15 QB hits, 1 FF and 1 FR. Austin Jackson and Lester Cotton and our TE’s are going to have keep Crosby in check and away from our QB Tua Tagovailoa, who gets rid of the ball ultra quick anyway. If we have both RB’s this week, keep in mind how they’ve thrived splitting carries. Against the Broncos, they had an amazing day, Achane with 203 yards on 18 carries and 2 TD’s, while Mostert had 82 yards on 13 carries and 3 TD’s. Achane had over 100 yards against the Bills but Mostert was stopped dead. Against the Giants, Achane exploded for 151 yards on 11 carries while Mostert had 65 yards on 10 carries. both scoring a TD each.

The defense needs to continue to make strides and become one of the leagues best units. This is the lineup we’ve waited to watch, now they have to realize their potential. It seems likely PR/KR Braxton Berrios won’t be playing which returns return duties back to Cedric Wilson. We do, however, get a boost with the return of WR River Cracraft. Cracraft and Ced Wilson will probably take slot duties if Berrios can’t go. One more concern on offense is the health of TE Durham Smythe who is dealing with an ankle injury, but did manage to get a limited practice session in on Thursday, and will most likely suit up. The Dolphins are ranked #10 against the run and have 29 sacks, good for 9th in the NFL in sacks. With the secondary healthy, and all our pass rushers healthy, I expect the sack numbers to go up and for this defense to start forcing more turnovers. Kader Kohou moving back to the slot where he really thrives, will share time with Nik Needham who is getting healthy as well. If and when rookie CB Cam Smith ever makes his presence felt remains to be seen, but even without Smith, this is the defense we want out there.

  1. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

There is absolutely no way this game should be close with Tim Boyle at QB, which of course means it will be.

    • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We just need to make a few big plays and that should be enough.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

At the end of the day no team should have to apologize for winning a close game even against a “lesser” opponent. For Christ sake the Jets beat the Eagles this year with Zach Wilson. No win is automatic

      • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Two of the 3 teams we lost to the Jets beat with Zach Wilson at QB.

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Right, which is why going o-fer against the above .500 teams hurts. We are going to lose a game we should win- every team but us has this season.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

But also we are going to win a game we shouldn’t. It happens to every team every season. I am not worried about who we have beaten or not. By the end of the season both Oakland and Denver may well have winning records for all we know. Buffalo may not for all we know.

  2. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Zach Wilson is not the reason the Jets win games. It’s their defense, STs, Hall and Wilson. Take Hall out I’m not sure they ever score.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

      Our D smothered Jacobs,
so perhaps they can keep Hall in check as well,
although they aren’t the same type runner.

      • Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

They’re both very physical as rushers and receivers. We did a great job against Jacobs. Good sign.

If our defense doesn’t overwhelm the Jets offense I think we’ll all be bummed.

  3. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

Ken, you nailed it. The Chargers were supposed to be better, Broncos and Raiders could surprise. Slow starts and we were part of that didn’t mean we didn’t beat anyone. Silly way to look at a season. We’ll know how good we are when the season is over. If we beat the Jets and their 85 Bears defense record wise, the narrative doesn’t change. They’re 4-6.😂

  4. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

I think the only way we get 30 points is if we get a defensive TD.
Not just a pick or strip sack, but a score off the TO.
    (which could happen)
    But
That Jets D is the real thing.

  5. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

    Ken,
I realize we are going to win A (one)game we shouldn’t. That’s not going to get it done. I read something earlier this season (can’t remember where) but it was a former head coach that broke down a formula for what a very successful team does: it wins the games the are supposed to win and wins half the others. We have done the former but not the latter.

    • naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

3 down, 3 to go, Brian.
Hoping we sweep the Cowboys, Ravens, and Bills to end the season.

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Sounds logical but logic doesn’t always apply to football. We are doing just fine. We have beaten all teams we should should and in the 3 losses we were in the thick of it in 2 of those

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

My point is if we don’t beat those teams, it will affect our record, correct? That will affect playoff seeding. If we don’t beat the Ravens then we will likely be the 3 seed at best, which means a home game and two road games likely @KC and @Baltimore. The goal should be to win the Super Bowl- we haven’t played particularly well on the road this season, and winning two on the road against those teams would be a tough ask.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

The goal is to win every game. That is not going to happen. I want to win those games as much as anyone but who knows. If we have to play on the road in the playoffs then we do so. The Giants won a SB that way in the 2007 season. It’s not ideal but it can happen. Let’s not put the cart before the horse

      • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

        Just thinking ahead!

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

LOL. At least we should have something to look forward to for a change

Now THAT we can agree on Ken! 🍻

  6. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

I wouldn’t be surprised if we beat the Jets 17-3. Their only points coming off a turnover.

  7. Ken's avatar Ken says:

  8. Tim Knight's avatar Tim Knight says:

We’re watching the two best teams from last year compete right now. We were in the game with both of them this year. Why is it a negative that we lost to top teams as opposed to losing to lesser teams?

    • mf13ss's avatar mf13ss says:

Allow me to honestly fix that for ya…

The worst offensive team in history beats the best team in the league and so what. It’s one game. Some how 4-6 is better than 7-3. I can’t wait for us to put that story to bed. Come on Dolphins, you can do it.🙂

  15. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

The downside to Phillips’s INT is it cost Wilkins a sack.

  16. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

On the INT Waddle broke off his route thinking he couldn’t get deeper than the safety in time for Tua to throw it but the play was for Tua to go over the top of the D to use Waddle s speed. Hill would’ve gone long and caught the TD. McDaniel took the blame for not teaching the key read on that play better, and Tua took the blame for not speaking directly to Waddle but just calling out the play number.

  17. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

Wilkins is so fast and has such a high motor that he was able to tackle a WR 30 yards downfield and save further damage in a 1-score game. He tackled Renfrow who is a close friend from both playing at Clemson.

Dating back to last season, Ramsey has six interceptions in his last six games played.
Over his last 10 games, three of which being with the Dolphins, Ramsey has 43 tackles, six interceptions, 12 passes defensed, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery.

    — Marsala

  26. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    also from Marsala:

Jaelan Phillips has a sack in four straight games and five in his last four overall. He also recorded his first career interception Sunday against the Raiders.

Phillips had three quarterback hits against the Raiders for the second time in his career. The last time was Week 18 of last season against the New York Jets, which was also a win.

He’s one of three players currently with an active sack streak of at least four games along with the Baltimore Ravens’ Justin Madubuike (six) and the Cleveland Browns’ Myles Garrett (five).

  27. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

    — Marsala

That was Mostert’s first time over 20 carries in a regular season game in his career.
    22 for 86 yards

He averaged about 4 YPC after contact, which means he was hit in the backfield several times and still managed positive yardage.

Tua hit 9 different players for completions, further busting the narrative that his success is all about Tyreek.

  28. naplesfan2010's avatar naplesfan2010 says:

With Sunday’s win, the Dolphins have now won 17 of their past 19 home games. That’s the team’s best 19-game home stretch in the history of Hard Rock Stadium, which opened in 1987.
They’re 5-0 at home this season and are one of only three teams to remain perfect at home this year, along with the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys
Since Nov. 7, 2021, Miami’s .895 home win percentage is the best in the NFL.

Pats, as of now, have the 3rd overall pick in the 2024 draft. Some are choosing the Pats to select QB Bo Nix there.

I think the Pats will sign UFA QB Kirk Cousins since they have a ton of cap space and select WR Marvin Harrison, Jr with the 3rd pick.

  33. stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

You guys may have talked about it before, but why are we doing Hard Knocks in the middle of a playoff run? Obviously I will watch with interest, but think it a bad idea. Less distractions the better.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

The director was on WQAM this morning. He was saying if the Dolphins go to the Super Bowl, this will be footage everyone on the team can show their children the journey

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

And the man with the final call was McDaniel. Might have bought that pitch like he wanted the guys to have an off day in Germany for the experience.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Was it McDaniel’s call? I was under the impression the Dolphins brass didn’t have any say in the matter. A few of the team leaders (players) have spoken out against the whole thing.

    • bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Yeah we all think it is a bad idea.

    • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

I was assuming McDaniel’s call. You saying was Steve Ross? Cause only person I think could overrule McDaniel.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Stang, I think the league makes the decision and the team they choose has to roll with it- or at least that is what I assume by the way our players have talked about the distraction.

      • stangerx's avatar stangerx says:

“I’m not exactly sure how that all went down, but once it was decided, the Dolphins have been open-arms [in] welcoming us…. You get organizations that [are] transparent and they’re okay with showing what’s happening because I think it’s very clear they believe in what’s happening.” — The director

Even if they had no choice sounds like the Phins handled it with class.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

I’m not surprised to read that. We’ve got one of the top organizations in the league now, which is wonderful to say after decades of ineptitude and years of embarrassment.

One of the many things McDaniel has done for us that I think maybe goes a bit under the radar.

Tempting… but as BBMike stated above, he likely won’t clear wavers.

The biggest question is WHY was he cut at this point in the season? Is it medical? Is it personal? Is it about an off-field issue? Very strange, to say the least.

If am not mistaken, if a team were to claim Leonard off waivers they take on his current contract minus any bonuses.

If he clears waivers, his old contract becomes void and then a team could just sign him to whatever is agreed on for just the rest of this season or a long term deal.

If he clears waivers, I think the Cowboys go after him after they lost one of their starting LB’s.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Pretty hard to see us keeping Ogbah. As you’ve said we don’t have a lot of guys rotating on the dline (Phillips, Chubb, Wilkins, Sieler all played 85%-95% of the snaps against the Raiders), Ogbah only got 7 snaps in when we could really use a guy to take more of those snaps.

    Phillips, Wilkins, Davis, Seiler, Chubb
    Leonard, Long, AVG
    That’s not bad!!!!!!!!!!!!

  55. Ken's avatar Ken says:

Sounds like it’s a physical issue:
Normally a player who seldom came off the field, Leonard had been relegated to first and second downs this season, and only rarely was on the field for third-down situations.

He steadfastly insisted he was very close to regaining the form that placed him among the premier linebackers in the NFL, but his on-field performance didn’t reflect that.

Leonard ranks fourth on the team with 65 tackles, but there have been just two “splash’’ plays: both tackles for loss. He had a season-high 11 tackles against New Orleans, 10 against Carolina and nine against New England in Germany. But against the Patriots, Leonard appeared to be a half-step slow, especially on a tackle attempt against Ezekiel Elliott that led to a 19-yard gain with a screen pass.

  56. Randy's avatar Randy says:

    Random thoughts:
Baker is not an inside hole filling LB. He’s best as an outside backer who uses his speed to make plays and cover. Fangio is using him much more intelligently. His tackling throughout his career has actually been better than I thought it would be, but he’s basically a bulked up safety. Use him in space….not in the box all game. He’s a weak side LB all day long. The ripping he’s been taking the last couple years was misinformed.
    ***
Good to see Jackson starting to play better. I think he’s still getting better, but he’s finally looking like a decent pro. I want more still.
    ***
Hunt is legit. He’s a potential all pro G. His loss is huge….and he makes Jackson better too. The play we’ve been getting from our backup guards has been horrible.
    ***
Ogbah…meh…I thought we should’ve traded him last year.
    ***
Waddle is starting to worry me. I’m struggling to view him as a long term #1 WR once Hill is gone. He’s constantly hurt in some way and is easily thrown off his game with physical play. He disappears a lot. Still young, but I’d like to see more consistent play. He’s hanging in there and trying but what will his health be in a couple years after getting the shit kicked out of him? Really good player when he’s allowed to run but the health worries me.

Christian Wilkins was robbed of a sack when the stupid QB threw the ball right to Jaelan Phillips while horizontally in the grasp of Wilkins.

Against the Raiders, Wilkins had two quarterback hits, a tackle for loss and three overall tackles. He was also heavily responsible for helping his teammates rack up statistics per usual.

Naples, why Jags over Texans? Jags have the lead over us in the playoff rankings.

      I hate the Texans.
I’ve always thought of the Jaguars as my 2nd favorite team.
Trevor and Travis went to Clemson.
I fear the Texans more in a one game series,
because they don’t understand they should be losing.
The Texans QB is very dangerous.
I’ve hated them ever since they had that long winning streak against us.
I say let the Jags win their division,
but let them have a worse record than ours,
so we get the higher seed,
and let the Texans be eliminated from the playoffs
in favor of a team we are more likely to beat,
      like the Colts or Raiders.

McDaniel on Hard Knocks was what I expected some but in other ways not at all. You ever watch “The Last Dance” about the last run of the Jordan Bulls? He reminded me of Phil Jackson. McDaniel sure as heck ain’t Shula, Jimmy J or Vince Lombardi. And farthest thing from Bear Bryant in the Tower ever.

The yets OL has no business stopping our defense. They’re OL is bad. I put this game on our offense. If they’re as good as most think they are, they beat this good yets defense. Go show you are more than just a fast offense. Put up 28 or more. We better not need 28 but shut up all these fuckers calling us soft by kicking some ass.
    ***
I’m typically a just win kinda guy but this offense needs to get back into a groove and prove they can get theirs in anybody. Our offense has let us down in our losses. Go out and put this game out of reach of a horrible yets offense.

Re: The concern with Waddle. I watched the Hard Knocks today. My take , based on what I’ve seen in games, is that Waddle shows up when Hill is out. That leads me to believe that As long as Hill is playing, he (Hill) is going to suck all the oxygen out of the atmosphere. Waddle is fine.

The ripping he’s been taking the last couple years was misinformed…
    ————-
The question becomes: is he worth the nearly $15M we’ll be paying him next season… outside or inside? If you can say yes, alright. Just keep in mind we’re -$37M in terms of our cap next season.

For whatever it may be worth, Jerome Baker is currently ranked as the #44 LB out of 59 this season, per PFF.

Additionally, he’s been targeted in coverage 40 times this season… 36 passes have been caught. That 90% CMP against him is the 4 worst in the NFL this season amongst all LBs.

I’m not a betting man, but if I were, I’d bet a LOT of $$$ that he’s not back with us next season. I really do like Baker (seriously, I do), but this is a business.

I don’t really care about the cap next year during the current season. We’re looking at 3-1 in the division and 6-2 in the AFC with a win over the Jets. That and 8-3 is a big deal.🙂
