2023 Season – Game 11 – Dolphins @ Jets

The Miami Dolphins now at 7-3 come into the unfriendly confines of Met Life Stadium in New Jersey, on the very first NFL game to be played on Black Friday, otherwise known as the day after Thanksgiving Day. Defensively, the Dolphins are about the healthiest they have been all season, especially with the triumphant return of CB Jalen Ramsey who missed the first 9 games. The defense is intact, but unfortunately that is not the case on offense. The unit that carried the team for most of the season, the high flying 33 + points per game unit is suddenly awash with injuries. RG Robert Hunt who hadn’t missed a game since he was drafted in 2020 missed the last 2 games against the Chiefs and Raiders and will most likely miss this contest against the Jets. Rookie sensation RB De’Von Achane returned last week only to get hit on the same troubled knee and he is QUESTIONABLE to play as well. RB Raheem Mostert will play, but he is banged up with ankle and knee issues, although that shouldn’t derail him from getting the majority of the touches on Friday.

RG Robert Hunt hadn’t missed a game in his career until the overseas game in Germany against the Chiefs. He missed last week’s game against the Raiders after our BYE week and it appears as if he will be sitting this Friday’s game out as well. WE have struggled this season against strong defenses and the Jets have one of the better units in the NFL, especially the D-line. We’ll be sending out LT Terron Armstead, LG Liam Eichenberg, C Connor Williams, RG Lester Cotton and RT Austin Jackson. They will be facing a talented group led by DT Quinnen Williams. In addition, the Jets have Quinton Jefferson, John Franklin-Myers, Bryce Huff and Solomon Thomas, who in total have 17 sacks. They also have a solid LB crew led by former Ravens LB C.J. Mosley. Mosley leads the Jets in tackles with 101 (55 solo). In the secondary, the Jets feature one of the best young DB’s in the game, CB Sauce Gardner. If we’re going to score points on the Jets, we’re going to have to earn them.

The Jets defense is allowing 20.4 points per game to opposing offenses, good for #11 in the NFL. The Dolphins defense is more liberal allowing points, although with Ramsey back in the fold, and a healthy Jaelan Phillips, and I’d be foolish not to mention the resurgence of LB Bradley Chubb as well, the defense has been more stingy as of late. The last 3 games we’ve allowed only 17 points per game, but I think we’re trending to do even better. The Jets offense has been scoring an even 15 points per game. The Jets have scrapped the Zach Wilson offense and have handed the keys to journeyman QB Tim Boyle, Aaron Rodgers understudy in Green Bay. He’s also played for the Chicago Bears, and the Detroit Lions as he made his way through the NFC North. In all, Boyle has completed 60.8% of his passes for 607 yards, 3 TD’s and 9 INT’s. Not a sparkling resume by any means.

What the Jets offense does bring to the table that can give the Dolphins trouble are 2 young stars, WR Garrett Wilson, and more so RB Breece Hall. Both early draft picks in 2022, The Jets definitely hit on 2 stars with Wilson (RD1 pick #10) and Breece Hall (RD2 pick #36). Breece Hall however, is the one that concerns me more than Wilson in this matchup. I feel like with a healthy Xavien Howard, a healthy Jalen Ramsey, and Kader Kohou or Nik Needham in the slot, along with safeties DeShon Elliott and Jevon Holland, we can contain Wilson. RB Breece Hall started out last season on fire before getting injured in game #7. He is no doubt fully recovered and right back to being a punishing, shifty, elusive back. Hall has 544 yards rushing for a nice 4.6 yards per carry. Consider the fact he’s doing this with no complementary passing game and it’s more impressive. Dalvin Cook who the Jets traded for early on never really became a part of the offense. RB Israel Abanikanda who a lot of you guys liked around has been all but forgotten so far.

What it really comes down to, as always is what version of each team shows up. The Jets have had some excellent efforts this season, upsetting the Buffalo Bills 22-16 in the season opener, and then taking down the then undefeated Philadelphia Eagles 20-14. In both cases, it the defense that made it happen, and I feel like that’s the way they will need to win at Met Life tomorrow. Which Dolphins offense shows up tomorrow, the offense in the first 6 games that scored an unbelievable 37 points per game, or the offense that has scored a very humble 20.5 points per game over the last 4 games? That’s quite a disparity and a huge concern. We have struggled against strong defensive teams and the Jets are exactly that. Mike McDaniel is going to have to come up with a way to get more players involved and more importantly, successful against the Jets. Sauce Gardner will probably be on Tyreek Hill as much as possible, so Jaylen Waddle, Cedrick Wilson Jr., River Cracraft and if possible, even Braxton Berrios need to step up and make plays. RB Jeff Wilson Jr., who was a healthy scratch last week will be active tomorrow and be 2nd string to Raheem Mostert as De’Von Achane will probably rest after being injured Sunday and not play in the short week. Unfortunately, RB Salvon Ahmed was lost for the rest of the season with a foot injury.

Division games are always difficult, and the Jets will be fired up playing at home on the first Black Friday NFL game. The Jets window to remain in contention could close with a loss to put them at 4-7 on the season. On the other hand, a big division win against the first place Dolphins could energize the team and the fanbase. A Jets win would have every team in the division at 2-2 and bring them one game closer, especially considering how the Buffalo Bills are struggling. My first thought is that will be a very low scoring game, I’ll be pretty surprised if both teams combined score 30 points. I feel like the Jets are going to throw everything they can at us, including fakes, on side kicks, trick plays etc. This is damn near a must win for the Jets. If we want to be close to a top seed in our conference, it’s a must win for us to keep up with the Ravens who at 8-3 are the #1 seed, then the Chiefs and Jaguars. I took a look at the injury report, EVERY Dolphins player injured logged in a LIMITED practice with the exception of WR Braxton Berrios. Some are precautionary and conservative due to the short week like Raheem Mostert, Alec Ingold, Tyreek Hill, Terron Armstead, Austin Jackson, and Lester Cotton. TE Durham Smythe will surely be QUESTIONABLE, and one of the less likely QUESTIONABLE players to play. We could certainly use his blocking, but TE’s Julian Hill and Tyler Kroft got the job done last week. Let’s all hope our offense returns to early season form and the defense continues it’s trend of being stingy to opposing offenses scoring.

That was a beat down win tonight. Shame Phillips is injured, but the team did play strong defense. Tua still iffy with some decisions, but the team came to play today.

  9. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

No win situation today. Play as we did, well iit was against a QB that shouldn’t be in the league, lose or close win and it was against a bad QB

    Either way we’re 8-3

  10. New Age's avatar New Age says:

Hoping Phillips isn’t hurt badly but the team did very well. Only negatives were some poor Tua decisions/ball security, and we basically played against a 3rd string QB. We played who they started so…Good Job, Fins!

  11. bailbondmike's avatar bailbondmike says:

Why do I feel like we lost? The Phillips injury got me sick. Ogbah looks so damn slow off the edge compared to Phillips. Hopefully, we can get what we got early in the season from AVG.

    • Mike E.'s avatar Mike E. says:

That injury hurts us, no doubt. Phillips was playing his best football, but now this gives an opportunity to Ogbah and AVG.

I watched the 99 yard int return a few times

On my last view I realized Al Michaels is a jests fan

He did every thing to make the call as unexciting as possible

He doesn’t even mention the prospect of a return until he passes midfield

    And then it’s

    “…..and Holland past misfield”
    ‘….and Holland inside the 40”
    “….and Holland inside the 20”

And then I imagine him slamming his hat On a table and screaming

    “can you believe this!”

He was crushed – you can hear it live

  23. Ken's avatar Ken says:

I am still impressed with that prolonged drive in the 3rd and 4th quarters when we just methodically went down the field.

  24. Ken's avatar Ken says:

    Passer rating VS Jets Defense:

    Tua – 77.5
    Herbert – 65.4
    Mahomes – 63.6
    Allen – 62.7
    Hurts – 59.5

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

You could play this game with any of the guys on the list, but take out that sort of throw away 2nd INT and Tua’s is a respectable 91.4.

He really only had those two bad throws.

      • Ken's avatar Ken says:

He really played pretty well today against a really good D that has made some really good QBs look pretty average

  31. CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

Wilson was a good RB2 today. He doesn’t present the homerun threat but against a D like the Jest, where staying on schedule is so important, Wilson consistently picked up between 3-5 yds. He actually had a higher average than Mostert, and was a very good compliment to our main back. He also had a big 3rd down catch and caught all 3 passes thrown his way. And he managed to stay healthy.

Our run game was pretty damned good today. We were able to run inside and out and had very few negative runs.

    • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

    • Ken's avatar Ken says:

Our run game was huge today. I loved the way we stayed with it and just kept stronger as the game went on

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

It was nice to see the commitment and ability to grind it out. That 3rd quarter drive was over 9 minutes long and ended in a TD that all but won the game. Drives like that can make and break games.

Our Special teams played well. No big returns and we made all our kicks.

The entire team showed up and played well on a short week and in primetime. Good team win.

        Go Dolphins!

  36. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m not sure why I was disappointed with a 21 point win yesterday, but I was.

I think the mistakes are getting to me.. lol. While the D is rounding into form (losing Phillips was a gut punch), it was a woeful Jets offense. The D should have buried them and they did. That’s a plus.

The mistakes by Tua in the last 2 games, 3 TOs each game, with bonehead interceptions in yesterday’s game especially (a blind man could have seen the pick 6 coming) and the terrible chest high handoff (you learn that in Pop Warner), is concerning.

We won’t win any of our last 3 games with these performances by Tua and possibly lose 1 or 2 of our next 3. It”s time to clean that shit up! As in now….lol!

December football is here and you need to play better every game as a team to be ready for the next level-the playoffs-unless you just want a participation trophy….lol.

    • Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

Correct Krishna. That’s one reason we haven’t been able to beat the better teams. It seems like in some of those games , it’s just an avalanche of mistakes that get us down big, even going back to last year. McD and his staff amhave got to get that cleaned up very soon.

  37. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

I’m very excited/hopeful for this team, it’s been a long time! But, the last 2 games have been bittersweet.

  38. Brian in NY's avatar Brian in NY says:

The next four games are very winnable, but we are the only good team in the league that hasn’t lost “that game” yet, so let’s say 2-1. I’d be happy if we go 2-1 in the last 3. That puts us at 12-5, a damn good record.

  39. pheloniusphish's avatar pheloniusphish says:

Washington, Tennessee, Jets – Miami should win all of those. That puts them at 11-5 going into the final stretch. I think they’ll win the 2 home games. Ravens on the road is a tough out, but Miami did it last year so maybe.

I’m not overly concerned by the turn overs. The pick 6 was a lazy ass pass…I still hate WR screens.the other interception was a confidence interception. Tua expects his receivers to win every contested or tight pass. The fumble was just a bad exchange with a new RB. Marino threw 29 pick six, Peyton and Brees 27. Shit happens when you throw the ball. That said, half (5) of Tua’s INT have been in the last five games which means 4 in the last two. Needs to clean that shit up.

  40. Krishna's avatar Krishna says:

LOL…and 0-1 in the playoffs if we don’t start playing better and clean up the mistakes. Thanks for being here….lol.

It’s killing me seeing Phillips name there. I’m still struggling to enjoy the win because of his injury.

      • CavalierKong's avatar CavalierKong says:

We’ve got good depth. AVG played really well in Phillip’s spot earlier in the year, but recently we’ve been seeing Chubb, AVG, and Phillips on the field at the same time. Sometimes Phillips would drop in coverage and AVG would rush, sometimes the other way around. Sometimes, we’d have all 3 rushing the passer; 3 quality pass rushers coming at the same time. It was nice to have the flexibility, and for opposing offenses to not know who was coming from where.

We’re still going to be a really good defense, and Ogbah will now get a lot more playing time. But losing Phillips hurts…sigh…

  65. steveccnv's avatar steveccnv says:

You could say Tua was bad yesterday, but he was really good when he wasn’t throwing ints

We used to say guys like P Manning threw 2 ints, so why again did he have a great game, and our QB who threw none not have a great game?

OK, got caught up at work. Busy ass day but got an incredible story to tell.

Had to go to the next county to do several bonds this afternoon. Got them done then got one more call to do another over there. They were not from here but from Southport, Connecticut. Dude was down here for Thanksgiving at the beach with the family. He had gotten arrested around 6pm yesterday but the wife couldn’t find anyone who would bond him until she called us today.

He was in jail for Disorderly Intox, Resisting Officer With Violence, Battery on Officer and Battery on EMT. $23,000 total in bonds, 1 misdemeanor and 3 felony charges. Them not being from here, I told his wife they had to pay the 10% bond fee and put up 23K for us to hold as collateral and they will get the collateral back when the case is over. They could pay 23K to the jail but they only take cash so she had to pay more and use us.

He went to a sports bar yesterday on the beach to watch the Jets/Dolphins game. Wife said he had been drinking all day, got mad at her and left saying he was going to watch the game somewhere else.

I show up to the jail to post his bonds, he was already dressed out to leave in his street cloths. He walks up to me at the window to sign his bond paperwork and he is wearing a green New York Jets #8 Aaron Rodgers jersey. I just happened to be wearing one of my Miami Dolphins hats this weekend. He looked at my hat and said, “Ahhh Fuck!” After a short pause, “Just get me out of here. I need to leave this fucking state!”

I wanted to laugh so bad but the good customer rep in me said, “Yes sir, just sign the highlighted areas and we’ll have you out in the next 30 minutes and get you on your way home.”

I think I did smile at some point during the short interaction. Sometimes you just can’t help it.
